All of us, parents or not, know that having a child has its curses as well as blessings. From hearing their first word to changing diapers, raising a child is one of a rollercoaster that leaves parents exhausted, crying (happy tears or not) and passed out. Weng Chen, the Seattle-based genius behind ‘The Adventures of Messy Cow’ comics has rewarded us with another series, this time focusing on the many hazards that parents often face.

“I’ve done a lot of comics when I was younger but stopped for a long time. One side effect of having children is that it gives you the real sense of mortality. When my second child turned two, I had the urge to start again because if I didn’t, I might never achieve my dream.” while addressing what inspired her to start creating, Weng Chen told Bored Panda. Her latest series “How a two-year-old can hurt you” explores the various ways a child can hurt their parent in a comical, light-hearted way. “It was fun and meaningful to document my children’s growth, as well as mine. The parents from all over the world told me how this is just like their life experience. I’m happy to know that I was not alone in this situation, and so do other people who read my comics.” the mom of two added, commenting on what lied behind the series.

During the first phase of most romantic relationships, we try to look as desirable as possible, even if that means ignoring some of our bodily urges. Like, letting out a fart, for example. Sooner or later, however, most couples realize that there’s no need to blow against the wind and deny their biology, sharing their first fart. Weng Chen, the artist behind The Adventures of Messy Cow, thinks it’s perfectly normal, too. To highlight this, she has created a humorous fart guide for everyone who is sharing a bed with their significant other, and it might be more useful than you’d think.

“I ate all kinds of food and often ran into this problem,” Chen told Bored Panda. “I was curious how other people handled the situation but it’s a hard topic to bring up in casual conversations. So I decided to make a comic about it and was happily surprised by how many people were open to this discussion.”

“Some couples can fart comfortably in front of each other after a week, some won’t do that after 50 years,” she added. “I think you should care about how it affects your relationship because you don’t want to make your partner dislike you, and it’s important you keep liking each other in a long-term relationship. I recommend using my comics as a guide and test it step by step. If your partner showed disgust at some point, don’t proceed further down the list.”

Weng is Chinese, but she’s fluent in English and visual language, too. She started drawing manga at a very young age and has been creating comics on-and-off since. In late 2016, she started the Messy Cow series.

Weng Chen was always close to the world of art. “When I was about 2, 3 years old, my mom drew me a little mermaid and told me the story,” she wrote on her website. “I was fascinated, it was like magic that the most beautiful picture just came from my mom’s pen. I believe that was when I fell in love with drawing and storytelling.”

Now she focuses on drawing comics about her dreams and daily lives raising her two daughters, Electra, the firstborn, and Ali, the secondborn, together with her husband. “Messycow comics were started with an impulse. I didn’t spend any time designing anything, just dove in and started drawing.”

Her latest series of comics explain the differences between the firstborn and the secondborn children and the strips are hilarious. What do you think?
