Doctor Who: The Feast of the Drowned Review
Tumblr media
The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole an narrated by David Tennant. I listened to it as an audiobook via YouTube. (Part 1 & Part 2)
When a naval cruiser sinks in mysterious circumstances in the North Sea, all aboard are lost. Rose is saddened to learn that the brother of her friend, Keisha, was among the dead. But then he appears to them as a ghostly apparition, begging to be saved from the coming feast... the feast of the drowned. As the dead crew haunt loved ones all over London, the Doctor and Rose are drawn into a chilling mystery. What sank the ship, and why? When the cruiser’s wreckage was towed up the Thames, what sinister force came with it? The river’s dark waters are hiding an even darker secret, as preparations for the feast near their conclusion...
I rate this book 4/5 Stars.
This was a fun read which I really enjoyed. I think this will become a thing for me... to listen to a Doctor Who audiobook or drama. The story was really good, but at times hard to follow, but maybe that’s because I was doing other things while listening to it. I still love the characters of 10, Rose and Micky. And from what I remember of the show, they are still pretty similar in this story. I love David Tennant as a narrator as well, his voice is just so distinct and he’s able to put on these different accents. Very immersive.
Do you have any Doctor Who audiobooks to recommend?
Do you have any questions? Or maybe some recommendations? Send me an ask here on Tumblr or tweet me.  If you wish to support me, you can buy me a coffee! Or even buy my debut fantasy novel, The Mending Road.

The Monkees promoting Head on the West and East Coast in 1968: (photo 2) “Hatchet [The George Washington University paper] Reporter Diane Smith stays on top of the news, ready to pounce on the Monkees’ Peter Tork. Photo by Ickow” (The Hatchet, 1968); The Monkees and Carol Doda at Bardelli's Restaurant, November 1968.
“[T]he Hatchet was invited to a promotion party for their new movie, ‘Head,’ at the Madison Hotel in downtown Washington. […] Finally they arrived. Gasp. Sigh. [Micky] couldn’t make it. Peter Tork, with a heavy beard, white leather pants, a sash, beads, and psychedelic shirt, sauntered in and shouted, ‘OK, everybody up and at ‘em!’ He seemed to have been drinking, but it didn’t smell like it. Columbia executives and photographers started arranging the people, posing the Miss Heads and Monkees for pictures. Everybody was flustered. […] While Peter was flipping popcorn into his mouth and draping his arms around the girls, Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones said nothing, smiling occasionally. Davy, all 94 pounds of him, could have passed for a 13 year old. Then we started talking in earnest to the boys. Someone asked Mike about his philosophy of life. Another asked Davy if he liked Schwinns or English racers better. Meanwhile a WAMU reporter with a tape recorder corner Peter. ‘Peter, would you said Whenever I’m in Washington, I listen to WAMU radio.’ ‘But I don’t,’ Peter answered. ‘That doesn’t matter, just say it.’ Then they started asking him about the movie, ‘Head.’ ‘It could really be a smash or it could really go bad-phoooo-blup!’ he explained. Then he takes about one of the Monkees records. ‘Well we have two versions of that song. One is four minutes long and the other is about one and a half or two minutes. The shorter one is supposed to be a lot better.’ Then about college. ‘I’m trying to unlearn everything I know. Knowledge clutters up the mind and makes it unfit for meditation.’ Then Peter asked the ‘Head Girls’ why they dressed up so prissy rather than hip. They explained that Randy Swartz told them to. He asked who Randy was and everybody pointed to him. ‘Oh, well, no wonder,’ Peter said. Later as Peter was discussing a rock group he had seen in New York, Cat Mother and the Night Newsboys, Randy came up to him and whispered in his ear. Peter scowled at him and said, ‘I wanna meet you outside later — and bring your brass knuckles.’ Randy smiled weakly. Meanwhile, Miss Head of Maryland, obviously considering herself a new Marilyn Monroe, arrived and one of the photographers asked her to sit on Peter’s lap. She complied, fluttered her false eyelashes, and as everyone held back his vomit, flashbulbs popped. Then the photographer posed Peter with the three Miss Heads. Miss Maryland Head, doing her best to remain inconspicuous, innocently fingered Peter’s beads. Nobody got a picture. ‘Could you do that again, honey?’ the photographer asked. She again complied. Meanwhile, Randy was cornering each of the Miss Heads individually and was saying, very discreetly, something like this: ‘Say, honey, we’re having a screening and a cocktail party afterwards with the boys. Sounds pretty good, huh, would you like to go? The boys would really appreciate it.’ Then Randy came over to Peter and said ‘We’re gonna wrap it up in 15 minutes.’ ‘We are, huh,’ Peter said. Randy smiled weakly again. Just before the Hatchet contingent left, Peter, seeming to speak for all but Miss Head from Maryland, said, ‘This is the most insane thing I’ve ever been to. It’s hideous and worse.’ Randy Swartz, mastermind of this promotion scheme, tried to ignore the comment. One of his boys was making trouble.” - ‘This is the Most Insane Thing…,’ by Brian Cabell, The Hatchet, November 18, 1968
“We wanted to do something special. Something a little extraordinary. Something not quite normal. We really didn’t want to make another episode of the television show. I saw the movie of McHale’s Navy, and it was absurd to watch an hour-and-a-half version of a half-hour episode. Basically, you didn’t get a sense that there was anything else going into it, they just wrote a longer script. The four of us, Bert Schneider, Bob [Rafelson], and Jack Nicholson all went to Ojai and talked about what we did and didn’t want. We sort of found a common ground. What exactly that was, we wound up leaving to Bob and Jack — the exact script of the movie was basically their idea. […] Basically, the movie Head is not the story of The Monkees’ release, it is Rafelson’s idea of who The Monkees are. Nobody comes off too good in this movie. If you look carefully, Davy gets called a Manchester midget greenie, Micky is a blithering space case, I am some Indian wise man’s mouthpiece who doesn’t know what he’s doing, and Mike is a con man. That’s because Rafelson is a cynic — he has a low view of life, and he doesn’t mind spewing it in your face. He thinks life sucks, and if you don’t think it sucks, then you’re a fool. The movie is not pure bad by any stretch. But finally, the point of it is pretty grim. The way Head ends is, if we’re not trapped into a black box, we’re trapped in a mobile pool of water.” - Peter Tork, Head 1994 CD liner notes

I Came By (2022) Review
When young graffiti artists break into rich people’s homes and paint “I Came By” on the wall, it felt a risk but the fact that it would uncover a dangerous secret that would be life threatening was never really thought about! ⭐️⭐️ (more…)

I have immense affectionation for the Matt Smith and David Tennent versions of the Doctor, but I genuinely adore how utterly joyous and unhinged Christopher Eccleston plays the role. Nine is delighted with everything. Every. Single. Thing. Rose threatening the pervy undertaker? Fantastic. Harriet Jones knowing about Hannibal? Brilliant woman! A chance to harass Micky? There are things still left to live for.
He's so happy to exist (but not really), and so happy to make that everyone else's problem in the most petty ways imaginable

A Possible Crossover?
Okay, so I have a huge crush on Charlie Hunnam and watched The Gentlemen for the nth time (brilliant movie, highly recommend it). And it got me thinking about a crossover with Peaky Blinders.
Tumblr media
Totally not only watching it for him… no, really! I seriously love it.
Anyway, what about a little rivalry between two wolves, the Wolf King of Camden and Law of Hammersmith and The Blood Hound of Kensington and Chelsea?😏
Just imagine being courted by Raymond Smith, Micky Pearson’s right hand, and him trying to not let his world interfere with yours. Bottles of fine whiskey, luxurious dinners at restaurants that leave you wondering how the hell he’s able to pay for them or at his estate (which is oddly large for a man living alone), trips around the UK and Ireland (often he’ll rent a holiday home outside the city or in the countryside, preferably the latter so you’re safe and he can let his inner Wolf out without anyone seeing him).
Since meeting you, Raymond is trying to get clean entirely. No more White Widow Super Cheese. He’s asked Bunny for help and together they’re working on it.
Tumblr media
Alfie, on the other hand, courts you the old-fashioned way by leaving you flowers, handwritten notes, and homebaked goods. He especially prides himself on his soda bread, made according to an old family recipe. There are very few people who know about it and its exquisite taste because he doesn’t sell it at his bakery. However, each time you drop by, he makes sure to serve you a sandwich made from it and give you a loaf before you leave.
Though he knows he has his own vices as well, drugs is one he’s never meddled in. Nevertheless, that’s not to say he doesn’t know about the dangers of the criminal underbelly dealing in them. As such, it makes him highly uncomfortable you’re associating with one of the top dogs (no pun intended) in the industry. Henceforth, it requires a lot of patience, suppressed growls and snarls, and hiding of fangs whenever you drop by with Ray at your side.
Alfie’s well aware you adore his bakery and he makes you your coffee exactly the way you like it. So the last thing he wants to do is ruin the time you spend there, in his most personal part of London. But whenever the other Wolf is at your side, his own floats to the surface enough to be unleashed if he loses his composure for even a split second. He’ll try his best to keep his temper in check, but the seething violence mixed with jealousy will show in how he’ll grumble his way through the conversation, shorter than usual, and avoid your gaze. Ray he just completely ignores.
Fortunately, you never fail to catch the apologetic glances in your direction nor turn a blind eye to the way he hangs his head as he offers you a basket with baked goods before you head out.
Each time it happens, he hopes you’re alone next time.
Because then he might finally have the courage to sit down for a cup of coffee with you.
Ngl, I’m kinda here for this concept. Might have a crack at it sometime soon.🤔

On The Empty Child:
The way my sister looked at me when she realized which episode it was— 😳 (😂)
Going off about how this episode traumatized her as a child
“we should watch these episodes with [brother] when he’s home. Traumatize him too.” “He’s seen them before.” “Traumatize us all AGAIN.”
Me asking her why the people in the bar started laughing when The Doctor asked whether anything had fallen, and her reactions of “I don’t know! 😭 I don’t know!” (The friend who introduced me to the show used to ask questions the same way, so I’m gonna bully my sister this way too.)
She says “uncomfortable” every time something creepy happens in any episode FYI
*guys says Jack’s name* “CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS? 👀”
Immediately followed by “How many men are going to fall in love with Rose?”
“You sort of have a boyfriend called Micky Smith, but you consider yourself ‘footloose and fancy-free.” “So she’s a WHORE.”
(she’s been trying to figure out if Rose and Mickey are still dating this entire time)
(she is not impressed by the answer)

Sometimes I miss the wilderness years.
Having the show back as good but it killed of a lot of ideas. The inventiveness of the EDA’s and VNA’s was gone. instead of seeing the Doctor go up against foes as unique as the Faction Paradox and the Emperor instead we got the Daleks once more, instead of the Doctor Visiting their own home and encountering the mysteries of their past we had the Doctor spend almost all his time on present day earth, instead of meeting new walk in characters such as iris’s Wildthyme who bent not just the laws of physics but the laws of narrative itself we had Micky Smith.
Don’t get me wrong all these thing are good in their own place but I feel when the show came back in 2005 we lost something very special and very different. We had the show back but we had lost so much.
Not to mention all the novelists who never wrote again. The world changed and something special died.
So here’s to the Wilderness years. Thank you and we will miss you.
