The marshes were bewildering and treacherous, and there was no permanent trail even for Rangers to find through their shifting quagmires. The flies began to torment them, and the air was full of clouds of tiny midges that crept up their sleeves and breeches and into their hair.
'I am being eaten alive!' cried Pippin. 'Midgewater! There are more midges than water!'
'What do they live on when they can't get hobbit?' asked Sam, scratching his neck.
They spent a miserable day in this lonely and unpleasant country.
I do love it when the environment turns antagonist! (And not even in an actively-trying-to-kill-you sort of way, just plain and simply slowing you down and making you miserable. Because then there's room to get so. much. worse. later on...)

Today's entry reminds me of backpacking with my aunt in mosquito season. There's only one word for it and that's Miserable. We had face nets, duct taped socks, repellent, you name it, it didn't matter. When there's that many of them, those fuckers get into everything. They're in your clothes they're in your face they're in your food. Despite assurances that our measures would be enough I got bit to hell and couldn't sleep from the itching.
I really feel for the hobbits and Strider lol 😭

It’s October 2, or Second Breakfast Day!
Pippin uttered this famous quote from the Fellowship movie as Aragorn and the hobbits traveled across the Midgewater Moors on their way to Rivendell. In the book, on October 2, they reached the Midgewater Marshes. So Pippin’s quote could have happened on the morning of October 2!
Enjoy a second breakfast in honor of Pippin 🍎💛

fun headcanons if you're feeling evil
it's Reniolind's first assignment after his sash ceremony to be stationed in the midgewater marshes
Amdir calls human or hobbit pcs 'jailbird' after the initial rescue mission
Radanir served in a big Ettenmoors conflict and at the Fords of Bruinen skirmish so he had experience being a line archer already
Calenglad swore oaths to grown Aragorn once he was of age to become chieftain, but also to Baby Estel, recently fatherless

The Midge-water Marshes .....
On the third day out from Bree they came out of the Chetwood. The land had been falling steadily, ever since they turned aside from the Road, and they now entered a wide flat expanse of country, much more difficult to manage. They were far beyond the borders of the Bree-land, out in the pathless wilderness, and drawing near to the Midge-water Marshes.
The ground now became damp, and in places boggy and here and there they came upon pools, and wide stretches of reeds and rushes filled with the warbling of little hidden birds. They had to pick their way carefully to keep both dry-footed and on their proper course. At first they made fan-progress, but as they went on, their passage became slower and more dangerous.
Their camping-place was damp, cold, and uncomfortable; and the biting insects would not let them sleep.

Last year (until my first tumblog vanished for a time), Dracula Daily inspired me to do something I’d considered before: Lord of the Rings Daily, following the events of the War of the Rings by calendar date from September 23 TA 3018 till the destruction of the Ring March 25 TA 3019. This will be following Appendix B so, like DD, not all days will have entries. And there’s a twist: it’s being done in my triangle figure cartoons instead of in book excerpts, and mashed up with the fandom crossover multiverse featured in my fancomic The Hero of Three Faces. There will be unique elements of both the novels and the movies; for instance, I'm pretty sure Saruman's action depicted in today's flashback to July is not described in the novel.
October 1, according to Appendix B, is the date Gandalf arrives in Bree a day late and a Dunadain short, an event unrecorded in the book till Gandalf recounts it in Rivendell but which I feel compelled to include in my project just to draw this. I doubt Gandalf (Obi-Wan Kenobi) will have told the innkeeper Butterbur (Quark) that he was running late because he’d been held captive by Saruman (Anakin Skywalker), but I drew it this way because I had been looking forward to drawing the scene with Saruman then realized it happened way back in July. All that said, I think I will leave out the rest of Gandalf’s journey to Rivendell because it doesn’t happen “onstage” in the books. Tomorrow, Frodo’s company reaches the Midgewater Marshes.

God, I can imagine the trek through the Midgewater and how miserable it would be. Not that I've ever had to pass through marshes without a path but I can imagine.
I do love Pippin and Sam's humour about it though.

For October 2, Strider (James T. Kirk) leads the way through the Midgewater Marshes for Sam (Jamie), Bill the pony (Roach), Merry (River), Pippin (Rose), and Frodo (the Doctor).
You may have suspected from hints I’ve dropped so far that, for this project, I’ll be cycling the Doctor through their incarnations as the story progresses*. Here the Doctor presents his second incarnation for the first time.
Thursday, the encounter at Weathertop.
* I’ve mentioned in this blog before that this is something I sometimes do when I mash Doctor Who up with something else, instead of actually crossing the characters over, though usually when it’s a stage not screen property. I don’t think there are any actual examples illustrated here on my Tumblr (there are one or two stage property mashups that are explicitly exceptions to the Doctor Who thing on one count or another) but here’s one on the pre-2014 Hero of Three Faces site.

Quest: Lightning in a Bottle
When Merilien requested me to catch fireflies, I imagined areas glittering with its swarms of fireflies. But this is fine too. 🙂
Top to Bottom: (1) Red Fireflies in Rushock Bog, (2) Green Fireflies in Midgewater Marsh, (3) Blue Fireflies in Falathlorn, and (4) Purple Fireflies in Grimwater

has the moon in the midgewater marsh always been red? I feel like I never really looks up in this area, so I've never actually seen the moon in LOTRO look like this. it's really neat!

Is there a way to get the camera to shift up and down? I know there are shortcuts listed to do it, but like... does it actually work for anyone or am I doing something wrong?
