loving you — k. mingyu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: non-idol! mingyu x reader
word count: 1,083
genre: fluff
warnings: kissing
author's note: the pictures above have held in a chokehold since he uploaded them, to be honest, i don't write dirty imagines (cuz i suck at them) but it was quite difficult for this to not turn dirty. also, since the account has a soft aesthetic, i'm only allowing soft hours in this space <3
Tumblr media
Something that made others wonder how you and your three-year boyfriend, Mingyu, last so long was your contradicting dynamics, and how you acted when you were around others, and when the two of you were left alone.
Prior to when he had decided to shoot his shot and ask you out, the two of you were the most unlikely to even be friends.
You were a raging introvert, with shy tendencies but a patience so thin, that even just looking at you the wrong way would put you in a bad mood. Whereas, Mingyu was a embodiment of a golden retriever—bubbly and friendly, never sitting still.
How the two of you met was a funny story to tell, especially on his expense because no matter how grateful he is to have met you, the memory never fails to make him turn red in embarrassment.
You were a swimmer in your campus, not necessarily competitive, you just enjoyed the sport and it didn't require for you to work in a team and only focus on improving your own skills—lesser people, the better, is what you thought. Mingyu, on the other hand, was on your campus basketball team. The basketball court and swimming pool were located close to each other, in the same perimeter, and it just so happened they shared the same changing rooms and bathrooms (Mingyu curses whoever planned the space).
After your classes that day, you wanted to go for a few laps in the swimming pool because classes stressed you out and this was your one way of stress-relief. It was either that, or yelling and ranting Minghao's ears out, to which he never had a say in. So, to save your friend the trouble, you decided to head to the changing room and into your swim suit before diving right in. It wasn't crowded, to your relief, with a few people doing the same thing as you and since practice wasn't held the day you were there, you were able to spend a lot longer in the waters.
Mingyu didn't have practice, but he, too, wanted relief from his classes, and decided to shoot some hoops with a few friends that were already at the court since earlier.
Remember when it was stated that Mingyu was like a golden retriever, that just couldn't sit still? This was when his inability to stay calm truly betrayed him. Joking around with his friends, it didn't register in him that he was standing a bit too close to the edge of the pool, and since he was prone to accidents, he tripped over his own foot, resulting in him falling straight into the water.
He's lucky to know how to swim, don't worry, he didn't drown and you didn't need to save him. It was when he tripped, not aware that you were swimming past, that he fell right on top of you. He was lucky you didn't black out from the sudden weight, since the surface of the water broke his fall.
Long story short: he'd profusely apologize to you whenever you both cross paths on campus, asking if he could treat you to anything, to which you finally agreed to, and realized that his presence wasn't so bad.
After three months of hanging out, you both realized your feelings for one another, and he officially asked you to be his.
It came to a surprise to everyone, because how the two of you acted in front of others, does not come off like a couple that was completely obsessed with one another when in private.
This came up as a topic of conversation between the two of you during one of your movie nights in his apartment. "Do you think I act too indifferent to you in public?" You had asked because one of your friends pointed out that it looked like Mingyu was more in love with you, than you were to him.
Mingyu glanced at you, pouting slightly in thought before shaking his head. "Showing affection, especially in public, isn't easy for you, that's all. I don't think you act too indifferent to me—you don't act indifferent at all, actually."
"Really?"
He nodded, "Acting indifferent would mean that you don't care at all, but you do, and you have your own way of showing it."
"How?" You asked, sitting up straight.
He took a second to think, before listing, "You get flustered very easily whenever I kiss on the cheek because that's your favorite spot to be kissed on." You couldn't help but roll your eyes, chuckling. "You don't necessarily blush, but whenever I compliment you, or praise you, I could see you biting your inner cheeks to keep you from smiling, or scrunching up your nose whenever I stare a bit too long at you."
You put on a face of confusion, unsure of what he was referring to before he turned to face you, a small smile on his pink lips as he stared into your eyes—the familiar gaze where his eyes would slightly twinkle from the lighting. Your nose scrunched, involuntarily, fighting the smile that urged its way through and avoided his eyes.
"See?" He chuckled, pointing at you. "And also, just because you don't show your affections publicly, doesn't mean you don't show it privately. Personally, I think you're more affectionate when there isn't anyone around."
You tilted your head. "Is that so?" He nodded, before averting his eyes back to the movie.
You thought back to his words, smiling to yourself at how he had effortlessly just made you a flustered mess, with such a nonchalant, almost innocent expression. You glanced towards him, beaming at him as you placed your hand on his shoulder, garnering his attention back to you.
Reaching out, you tugged gently at the necklace exposed from his buttoned-up shirt, the top few buttons loose, pulling him towards you as you press your lips against his in a chaste kiss. It took him by surprise, red flush beneath his tan skin.
Pulling away, you locked eyes with him, smiling at him. "Thank you, Gyu."
"What for?"
You shrugged, "Always saying the right things. You're the best boyfriend, honestly, the best one I could've asked for." Your words were simple, but had a massive affect on him, causing his smile to only widen, reaching his eyes as he flushed pink.
Without saying anything, hands placed behind your neck, he pulls you back to him, smiling against your lips as the movie continues, long forgotten.

Casting Svt as Characters in KDramas I’ve Watched
Masterlist || Taglist Form
Words: Around 900
Category: Fluff I guess
A/n: If you disagree w any of these, I’m always open for healthy discussion
Disclaimers:
a) A lot of these shows I watched a while ago so if any character descriptions are inaccurate, please drag me it’s okay.
b) Some characters are, of course, very different in age than the members but just go on the emotions, will ya?
c) Character descriptions are kept vague on purpose because I don’t want to give spoilers. Also, if I’ve given any major spoilers unintentionally, I apologise.
d) Spellings of Character names are from Wikipedia, so if you find any inaccuracies, pls lmk
Taglist: @junhui-recs @drunk-on-dk @wonuhour @enhacolor
Fic specific tags: @wonwussy @bitchlessdino hope you guys like it!
Tumblr media
1. Choi Seungcheol as Lee Young-Joon in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim
The strong male character with childhood trauma who doesn’t know what to do with his feelings once he realises the love of his life, whom he had never confessed to, is leaving him screams Seungcheol to me. He’s awkward with his feelings, reacts poorly when hearing the news, is a true leader who silently burdens not only his trauma, but also his brother’s.
Tumblr media
2. Yoon Jeonghan as Park Chang-ho in Big Mouth
I think, of all the people in the world who can deceive a prison full of inmates that they’re a criminal mastermind and you shouldn’t mess with them, no one else would compare to Jeonghan. The professional lawyer, who is framed and sent to prison, is a good person at heart, and helps other suppressed inmates and leads a revolution. Jeonghan is particularly quick to think on his feet, which matches the character’s energy.
Tumblr media
3. Hong Joshua as Kang Tae- Moo in Business Proposal
A cold CEO who is super averse to dating and and is busy running his business meets and instantly falls in love with a girl who is posing as her friend on this blind date to get rid of him. He is devoted to his family, his passion for his company’s food products is only matched by our heroine. He’s a great cook and is also kind of nosy in his little brother’s love life.
Tumblr media
4. Wen Junhui as An Min-Hyuk in Strong Girl Bong Soon
The cute, funny gaming company CEO who hires our Bong Soon as a bodyguard just screams Jun to me, both because of his passion for games and gaming development but also for his endearingly cute and shy demeanour and the sense of humour. Plus actor Jun deserves a fun, cool and handsome role like this, considering we might never get to see his c drama :((
Tumblr media
5. Kwon Soonyoung as Jung Joon-hyung in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo
Ok so this is the latest drama I’ve watched and Joonhyung’s passion and commitment for swimming instantly reminded me of Hoshi and his passion for dance. A bonus factor is the fact that after seeing In the Soop S2, I can confirm his….ahem…abdominal area can easily pass for a swimmer’s.
Tumblr media
6. Jeon Wonwoo as Cha Sung-hoon in Business Proposal
Yeah I don’t think I need to explain this.
Tumblr media
7. Lee Jihoon as Wi Seung-Huen in Rookie Cops
I’m sorry but Woozi as a trainee cop along with an initial e2f2l storyline???? Sign me uppppppp… Plus, this character is like the ace trainee along with having daddy issues and a strong sense of morality that builds over time. Just writing this is making me crave a Woozi remake of this show.
Tumblr media
8. Xu Minghao as Myul Mang in Doom at Your Service
Minghao, I think, is the best person in the world who can bring doom to the world while looking fucking stylish and having an angsty emo personality. Fuck the humans, what even do they have. Xu minghao is literally here to end us all. Plus the later developments in the show and the emotions this characters develops….I’ll cry watching if Minghao was Myul Mang. Also, I feel like Minghao is the most supernaturally member in Svt- you know the one who is into Tarot cards and palm readings.
Tumblr media
9. Kim Mingyu as Ji U-Min in The Fabulous
Ngl, the Going Magazine episode was a big factor while giving Mingyu this character. This super talented fashion and street photographer, who sometimes struggles to find his aim and is stuck in the friend zone after breaking up with the female lead is such Gyu vibe honestly. This man is so supportive, encouraging…and might I say relentless?
Tumblr media
10. Lee Seokmin as Baek Hee- Sung in Flower of Evil
The beauty of Dark! Seokmin is something to behold, a fantasy I will never give up on. A bright, perfect husband in every sense of the way on the surface with a dark past and even darker present….. is….so…..hot. And his wife is a police officer? Yup yup add it to the drama. Mars’ serial killer DK fic has arisen a fantasy in me that i don’t think is going away anytime soon. Plus I’m a sucker for complicated, grey characters whose layers are revealed slowly as the series progresses. He’s almost an anti- hero here.
Tumblr media
11. Boo Seungkwan as Lee Seung-cheon in The Golden Spoon
Another grey character, probably the most complicated character on this list. I think, for me, our Boo is also the most emotionally complex and mature guy in seventeen so I think this character really suits him. Our lead guy, is born into poverty but changes his luck, along with his family’s, by switching lives with the richest guy in his school. Complications, along with consequences, haunt him.
Tumblr media
12. Chwe Hansol as Goo Chang-seong in Hotel Del Luna
I’m sorry but Vernon as this character??? In great looking suits and constantly in service of ghosts to help them finish their last wishes and peacefully transition to afterlife along with having… probably the most emotional love story ever…..yeah I need a minute, or a week.
Tumblr media
13. Lee Chan as Kim Do-ki in Taxi Driver
Taxi driver is probably my favourite kdrama till date. And Dino as the sexy vigilante who takes revenge for people who the system can’t help is such a sexy concept. Action hero Dino to the rescue! Plus the main character plays so many roles undercover and is so hilarious at times that Dino will fit perfectly in this character’s shoes.

She is also highly known for her intelligence and work ethic due to her high grades in the Computer Science department despite not having much knowledge about the subject initially. This is also supported by her dual enrollment at Sungkyunkawan and her bility to balance her sports, family company work, and school.
She can be very lighthearted, but when she focuses on something - the becomes tunnel-minded and can even disrupt the best of plans.
She also earnt the title of the Queen Taipan due to her snake tattoos, her fighting style, and the ease that she could fight against Vasco.

With her standard school uniform, she wears pants rather than the skirt, a skintight turtleneck, Converse thick soled sneakers, and her hoodie-leather jacket.
Background :
She was born to the head of Taesan and one of the shareholders of HnH. Her mother was a former wrestling champion who'd decided to try her way into business. When expanding her international branches and making a contract with HnH, she met Baek Dogyeong.
The two of them initially didn't get along, but they developed a camaraderie and strong friendship together, eventually opting to get married to merge their businesses
Shortly after her and her brother were born, her father and mother separated as they were much closer as friends. Her mother took custody of her twin brother and her father took custody of her
Before she was about to leave to return to India with Hwaraon, Taushini Jin was murdered by Park Jong-Gun as revenge against her sister died in an accident, leaving her father to raise the three of them on his own (he adopted Gyu before the twins were born).
Growing up, she had always been fond of martial arts and as the Heir to her father's company, such knowledge was expected. As a result, Ghauravi and Hwaraon grew up in a healthy environment despite being bullied through the majority of their early schooling and both pursued martial arts - Ravi being more so than Hwa.
However, in middle school, Hwa used to get bullied and Ravi would defend him, leading to her becoming a target. The girl who instigated the bullying was a daughter of an army official and at the time, her father was struggling, so she would continue to get severely bullied to the point that she would be scarred heavily.
Ultimately, after this, Ghauravi threw herself into training and she took up swimming and computer programming. She eventually emerged onto the MMA scene, where she befriended Seong Taehoon and eventually Ji Yeonwoo through her dual enrollment. When she entered J High, she was reunited with Jay - who she was childhood friends with - and he was the one who asked her to join <;Allied>.
Trivia :
Ghauravi likes to go by Ravi since her sister gave her that nickname and the two of them nicknamed their brother Hwa.
Ghauravi's MBTI-personality is ESTJ .
Despite being wealthy, Ghauravi used to live in a two-story home in a more suburban area near Seoul. After her father's death, she rotates between living with her sister and brother in a multi-bedroom apartment and living with her Uncle in their Taesan safehouse.
Her title in the Allied crew is [Serpent].
She has a pet lavender corn snake, a pet hognose snake, and two fat tailed geckos as pets.
She had a herpetology phase in middle school.
She understands English, Hindi, and Korean but is terrible with languages and the arts.
Alongside running Taesan, Ghauravi plans on being a professional athlete in both MMA and competitive swimming.
She has a motorcycle that she uses to pick up Taehoon and Yeonwoo whenever they decide to join Hobin in his chaos.
She has a Tic-Tak-Tok account that she just blatantly and openly talks about all the drama in the crews and exposes everyone. [A majority of the heads of the Four Crews follow her and think she's joking.]

Felix is taller than me since I'm like 5'6" (i know, how surprising 😭😭) maybe even JinJin but idk his height at all so sorry if I'm wrong but I can definitely agree with the trend when it comes to biases. Mine are mostly all-rounders (ex. Han, Kevin) or those who are REALLY tall (ex. Mingyu, Jaehyun) or duality boys (ex. Woozi, Jaemin). Pretty diverse but those 3 encompass around 75%.
Also re: guys who are short but buff, BIG MAJOR HOT FACTOR. case closed.
- bluejayboys
I feel the height thing. Most guys are taller than me bc I’m 5’4”. For an American girl, that’s average, but it still means that I’m considered short by most and have the same problems as most shorter people.
As for my biases, they tend to be rappers or have what one might consider a “swimmer’s bod”. I like taller, leaner figures and practical muscle. Even JinJin (he’s 5’9 but still considered the “short one” of the group and tends to get teased) has a lean and muscular figure. Don’t even get me started on Moonbin and his Mermaid Prince drama, bc it focuses around swimmers (Bin being one) and I have no idea how I got through it without melting😭😭
P.S.: I got JinJin’s height from Google, but Google is also know to fuck that kinda stuff up. JinJin used to be 5’7, which is why he’s considered “short”...especially compared to Bin, Eunwoo, and Sanha who are all over 6 foot at this point

SWIMMER!MINGYU
pairing – kim mingyu x reader genre – fluff + coach!reader + highschool!au author’s note – this was originally supposed to be a normally written oneshot but it never came out the way i wanted it to be so yeah here’s the bulleted version and it came out nicer!! enjoy!!
Tumblr media
it’s safe to say that your high school swim team is one top tier swim team
you’ve won many championships in the past
and some of the past swimmers were skilled enough to snatch scholarships from top tier colleges
one even made it abroad and that says a lot
you’re lucky enough to be the current assisting coach for the swim team
okay truth be told the current swim captain – choi seungcheol – begged you to coach them because he knows you’ve got some experience
he was really desperate okay
because like,,,,,,
he literally begged you every day in the first two weeks after the new semester started
and he nearly went on his KNEES in front of the entire SCHOOL
yes,,, that’s how desperate he was
so you said yes before he actually went on his knees
none of the swimmers can deny that you know your stuff and know how to help them improve
but you’re also known for being strict af and if the swimmers value their wellbeing, they won’t talk back to you
it’s lowkey amusing seeing how you are feared of to a certain extent
but you’re only putting out that front so the swimmers will move their asses,,, well,,,,, seungcheol said himself everyone wanted to improve and needed your help
and you’re satisfied with almost everyone
keyword: almost
because there’s kim mingyu
you don’t have anything against him,,,, he’s a really nice guy,,,, but the thing is
instead of swimming his goddamn laps
he’s busy flirting with jung chaeyeon
not that you have anything against chaeyeon as she is your friend and you could care less about any of their love lives
it’s just,,,,,, mingyu should be swimming his laps!!!!!
yes he is a prodigy (somewhat) and is already naturally quick given his long ass arms and legs (those proportions should be illegal)
but that doesn’t excuse him from tRAINING FFS
he even said himself he wants to get a scholarship so you put in even more effort for his sake
because you’re positive he will stand a chance but only if he prACTICES
and so you always gotta pull mingyu back to the pool
and he’d whine around saying “just five more minutes please!!”
five minutes my aSS that’s what he said fifteen minutes ago too
in the end he’d swim the laps diligently
but lately,,,,, lately it seems as if he doesn’t really care
maybe ‘not care’ is the wrong term but he has other things in his mind too
and it’s quite obvious judging how he gets out of the water as soon as he’s done and rushes back to chaeyeon who shows up to practice regularly to cheer the swimmers on along with some others
(you still can’t believe the swim team has a fan club for the love of god–)
you don’t mind if some take off five minutes to talk to them but mingyu apparently has a different understanding of five minutes only
this guy is really testing your patience
he isn’t the only one you have to keep an eye on so you really can’t be his personal babysitter and see that he stays in the water
and with the competition coming up in a few months
you really have no other solution except forcing him to stay after hours
which you do
so when seungcheol calls it a day
and everyone’s about to go change
you hold mingyu back
“mingyu, you’re doing extra laps.”
“what?”
“you want that scholarship? you gotta earn it. eight laps freestyle, now.”
tbh you’re expecting him to complain but ? he’s ? not ? complaining ?
sure, he’s baffled at first but then he nods and swims his laps??
and while he smiles whenever you’re pointing out some things just like usual, he goes on full serious mode when he’s swimming???
why is he a changed man all of sudden
besides the regular training four times a week you force him to stay behind after every time
and when you’re feeling stricter as usual you make him come on weekends too
but mingyu has never complained
all he does is smile and agree and follow your instructions,,, which surprises you pleasantly
however,,, you notice that he talks much much m u c h longer with chaeyeon during regular training
and you’re like ??? he does know that you only take your time to beat his ass in the evening because he does pretty much nothing during normal hours, right ???
but you’ve got every right to be confused and mad because you’re literally using your free time to play his personal trainer because he can’t get his crap together
or he isn’t as serious as when it’s just you two in the hall
anyway, you’re pissed at him and everyone can see it
seungcheol can see it
chaeyeon can see it
hell, even the fan club notices your grudge
but not mingyu, this oblivious little shi–
“you really don’t have to go out of your way to train mingyu after hours, y’know,” seungcheol tells you while you’re busy timing junhui (who by the way, upped his game when it comes to butterfly)
“he’s half assing regular practice but not after hours which confuses me, but i don’t really mind staying late here.” you shrug and give jun a thumbs up after checking his time.
“that brat, i swear to god–“
“cheol, i can and will kick his ass myself so don’t do anything stupid!!!!”
you even have a little talk with chaeyeon
though you’re the one who initiate it,,,, you swear you don’t mean to pry
because you d o n ‘ t care
but some things need to be said you figure
“i’d really appreciate it if you and mingyu wouldn’t talk so much during practice, y’know? look, he’s got the best chances grabbing one of those scholarships but if he doesn’t get a grip, he can kiss them goodbye.”
“y/n, don’t worry, we’re not together and of course! i’ll make sure to keep an eye on the clock the next time!!”
and with that she sends you a wink and you’re like wait what
you never implied to know anything but okay?
a n y w a y s
bless chaeyeon for keeping her word
she still comes to practice but ignores mingyu every time he tries to start a convo with her
it’s a hilarious sight ngl
even seungcheol is cackling sjkhd
once mingyu gets it,,,,, he stops bugging chaeyeon and swims his laps
nonetheless he still insists on staying behind to practice more,,, and you don’t mind helping him out
in fact,,,,, it’s a lot of fun with just the two of you in the pool,,,, no it’s him in the pool and you’re observing from the sidelines
he really has nice shoulders
now here’s the tea
it’s become your thing to stay behind and do this one on one training
ofc you stay serious but can’t help but break into laughter every time mingyu hits his head against the wall when he’s swimming backstroke
fun aside tho
fast forward to the day of the competition
seems like all hard work was worth it
he got the gold medal in freestyle
and several offers from prestige colleges
even after the competition you continue your post-sessions
and while he’s playing around in the water you ask him
“so,,,,, already decided which college you’re gonna attend?”
he looks up at you with his adorable usual grin that you find so endearing
“yeah I already decided,,,,, I rejected them all!”
wait what
w h a t
“ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND KIM MINGYU WHAT THE ACTUAL–”
“I’m going to your college,,,, wouldn’t want to give up the best coach for any college”
that shuts you up,,,, you stare at him in disbelief and when the words finally sicker
“if this is a joke,,,”
“chaeyeon told me you’d find stuff like this romantic,, just forget what I said then” he suddenly mutters
and you finally get why he’s been pestering chaeyeon for a while
now that you think about it,,, wasn’t chaeyeon the one who implied he should get extra hours of practice?
“,,,, well,,,,, she isn’t exactly wrong,,,,”
and suddenly he’s overly happy and grins at you and you finally notice that fond expression in his eyes
“does that mean I can ask you out?? and you’re not mad at all??”
“fyi, i’d always say yes to you but that doesn’t change the fact that i’m mAD YOU WASTED MY FREE TIME THE ENTIRE YEAR”
“,,,,, but I can make it up with a really great date?”
that makes you chuckle and you playfully smack his forehead
“swim the laps first and then we can talk about it”
fun fact: the date exceeded your expectation,,, mingyu really knows how to cook his food

dudeee have you seen that one vlive where cheol starts sulking because carats called a monsta x member hot? can i pls request thigh riding with sulky cheol?
Tumblr media
"Thank you again for shouting dinner, Gyu. It was wonderful." You coo from the outside of the car, bending down to talk to the driver through the window.
"It was my turn, anyway I'm glad you had fun." Mingyu coos back, the man behind you mumbling under his breath. You bid a final goodbye to the boys still left in the van, watching as it drives away, turning to finally face the oldest standing besides you.
"What's up your ass?" You question, crossing your arms over your chest, watching the pout grown on the man's face before stomps his way to the front of the building.
"Seungcheol, you can't be serious." You groan, following after him, pulling your apartment keys from your bag. "If you seriously tell me that me spending time with your friends, while you were there I might mention, has made you into a sulky child, I'm going to leave." You hiss as you close the apartment door behind you, turning to see Seungcheol sitting on the couch, his arms still crossed over his chest.
He lets out another soft huff, before uncrossing his arms and whining, his hands reaching out towards you. "Why do you have to be friends with all of them though? And why do they all get nicknames?" He whines into your shoulder as her pulls you into his embrace, your legs on either side of his left thigh, his arms tight around your waist.
"What happened to your friends are my friends? Huh?" You prompt, pulling away from him, pushing yourself down on his thigh. "You really can't be like this every time we get home from seeing your friends." You add, your hands sitting loosely on his shoulders, as you phone vibrates in your back pocket.
"Is it one of them?" He questions as you pull your phone from your back pocket, showing him the screen quickly before answering the call.
"Mingyu? Did we forget something at your place?" You question into the phone, your eyebrows furrowed, focused on what the man on the other line was saying. It was easy to miss the determination that fixed itself on Seungcheol's face as he slowly moves your skirt further up your hips, tensing his thigh, his hands soft on your hips as he starts moving your body against the rough material of his jeans.
You eyes shoot down to him, surprised by his actions, you pull the phone away from your ear, about the tell the man to stop when he leans up catching your lips with his. "Hang up" He whispers into your mouth, prompting you to bring the phone back to your ear.
"Hey Gyu, I have to go, Cheol just fell over in the shower." You say quickly, ignoring Mingyu's questions of your boyfriends injury level. "He's fine, I'll come pick the jacket up tomorrow. Thanks Gyu." You rush, hanging up the phone and handing it to Seungcheol who turns it off.
"I can't believe you would answer a call while you are sitting on me." He pouts, leaning forwards to place a soft kiss against your jaw, suckling on the skin lightly as he moves down your neck. "You should've just ignored it." He adds, his teeth biting softly on your shoulder before he pulls his mouth away from you.
"It could've been important." You choke out, as you watch Seungcheol's eyes graze down your body until they stop where wet swimmers meet his thigh.
"Sure." He mumbles, his hands tight on your hips as he rocks you forwards and backwards watching the light sheen it leaves on his pants. You let out a shuddered breath, your hands pulling the dress further up to sit on your waist as you untie the straps on the swim bottoms, thanking whatever is out there for letting mingyu's birthday be a pool party.
One of the hands on your hips let go for a fraction of a second, gripping your swimmers and ripping them out from under you, before pushing you back down onto his thigh, the jeans bare against you.
"Make yourself come. Show me why I shouldn't be mad." He whispers his hands reaching behind you undoing the zipper of the dress, once it sits loosely on your torso, he pulls it over your head, leaving your matching bikini top staring you in the face.
"Go on, move." He says again, letting go you you hips, his hands pulling down your bikini top, his mouth latching onto your left nipple, sucking as you begin to move your hips forwards and back.
"Shit." You curse, your head falling back, as your thighs tense as the friction his jeans are providing, his warm mouth wrapped around your nipples creating a different sensation. You lift your hands lacing them through his hair, pulling his face tighter against you.
He begins place soft kisses up your chest to your neck, his hands moving back to your hips to push you down further, moving you faster.
"Cum for me, darling. Come all over my pants." He whines, his kisses chaste on your skin as his eye dart down to where the two of you touch. You don't last much longer, your rutting getting feverish as you feel the orgasm wash over you. You let out a content hum, as your hips begin to slow, Seungcheol pressing a kiss to your cheek.
"I feel better now." He says quietly, chuckling into you hair as you slump against him. You look up at him in questioning before saying, "I wonder if Mingyu's thighs would feel that good." You shriek as Seungcheol stands up from the couch bringing you with him.
"Why would you say something like that? Guess we have to make sure your mind never goes to mingyu again." He hisses stomping down to the bedroom. Your grin growing.

10 Ways To Get Over Gyu
Seventeen Kim Mingyu x Reader + others Summary: Being the cute guy's best friend is really hard, especially when you've been harbouring a one sided crush for years. Work Count: 8k+ Warnings: Really bad summary, Childhood friends AU, Friends to Enemies (to Lovers?) AU, yes in that order, lol nah, I changed my mind, it’s pure angst, jealousy, probs some fluff if you squint, cheating, MANY TYPOS OOF, Swimmer!mingyu etc.
Tumblr media
For the longest time, Mingyu was actually the short one in our friendship.
Short legs, constantly grazed because of how fast he ran and how often, an annoyingly circular bowl cut that hid his tiny face and eyes, and a high pitched squeal was all the equipment he had for the longest time.
I, however, had always been sophisticated.
Not because I was just that so early on, but because my mother scolded me for doing the littlest things growing up, especially when I wore the dresses my grandmother bought me from the States to school.
You could say that because of this, Mingyu and I should have never become friends, since I had learned self-control so early on and all he did was do whatever he thought about.
But that was precisely the reason why we got along so well. He did things that I itched to do in the playground, and no matter how much I reasoned to him that my mom would be mad if I got my clothes dirty, he always reasoned back, “you’re the most careful person I know! Plus, if you ~don’t get it dirty, your mom would never know you played outside.”
Safe to say, he had a compelling argument for a 5 year old.
Unfortunately, I still got my dress dirty no matter how careful I was.
I got an earful from my mom that day, but as persistent as my mother’s voice was at the back of my head, so was Mingyu’s beckons to go on the seesaw with him.
Eventually my mother actually realized something out of numerous times I got my dresses dirty. I was still a kid and I should live like one.
Unknowingly, Kim Mingyu set me free from my trap.
And we were best friends ever since.
It was sheer luck that we wound up in the same grade school after. Safe to say our individual stories about each other were told to our moms about each day-- how I did this, how Mingyu did that. It made them instant friends when they finally met during our grade 1 parent-teacher conference.
Mingyu and I were playing in the field as our moms talked by the bleachers.
“Your son is so adorable. He’s going to break so many hearts when he gets older.”
Mingyu’s mom sighs, “well, if he’s anything like his father, he will.”
The two share a laugh.
It had always just been me and him up until grade 4, when we on our own started to deviate to make room for friends in the same sex.
On the day we chose our mandatory after school clubs, that’s when things really started to change.
“Hey, did you sign up for the swimming team?” Mingyu with his big eyes and a little more decent hair style asked me as we went to lunch.
“Why would I sign up for the swimming team Mingyu?” I asked, tilting my head down a bit to my left side to look at his face. He wasn’t extremely shorter than I was, but an inch was an inch and it was a big deal, especially in Mingyu’s head.
He swats my flowy skirt down as it starts to rise up. I push it down as well as he answers, “well because swimming is fun and I’m joining the club.”
I gape at his reasoning. I would be so much fun to join the same club as him. Still I pouted, “but I wanted to join the knitting club.”
“The knitting club? That’s so lame!”
I sneer at him and shove him, “you’re lame, Mingyu.”
Mingyu sidesteps to regain his balance and chuckles, “only old ladies knit.”
I scoff, “I’ll have you know this sweater I’m wearing was knitted by my dad. He says it’s his stress reliever.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s when you feel kind of bad because of something. He says knitting makes him feel happy.”
“Well, I don’t really feel bad, so I’ll join the swimming club.”
I nod, “okay, I’ll join next year.”
“Okay.”
True enough, so many kids joined the swimming club. It made Mingyu have friends with kids in both higher and lower grades. I, on the other hand, had formed a tight knit relationship with the few kids who had interest in knitting. They were all older than me though, and had a lot of things to do, which was why I hardly ever got to hang out with them outside of our club. It was fine though.
I had one best friend in my class besides Mingyu, and it was a girl named Jennie. Or so I thought she was my best friend.
She was, in my grade-schooler head, one of the coolest chicks ever, since she spoke English with an Australian accent, and she always had the coolest bags. And she didn't turn mean, if that's what you're thinking. It wasn’t that she said, ‘oh you’re bad at English,’ or ‘oh you have ugly bags’. No, it was just that she only hung out with me when Mingyu was around, and Mingyu kept smiling at her like a puppy dog.
When they eventually started dating, like grade-schoolers do, I was kicked to the curb.
That’s when I realized something.
As Jennie and I sometimes watched Mingyu after school in his swimming team, I realized that it hurt that I wasn’t the only girl Mingyu would hang around with, and I would never be the only one.
Mingyu smiled widely as he waved at us, at Jennie, from the edge of the swimming pool. Jennie gleefully smiled back and waved.
I turned to my sneakers and sigh, uttering to myself, under my breath, that I liked my best friend.
     1. The Realization
Ever since Jennie stole the spotlight, I found it to be a lot harder to hang out with Mingyu and her. Of course, I didn’t want to be obvious, but I also didn’t want to hang around like a loose string in a sweater. Maybe that analogy was a little too real because I could not get the string in my sweater to sit still.
I heard Mingyu call me from the end of the hall; I turned and found him smiling as he jogged over, “you going home already?"
I nod, “I asked my mom to pick me up early.”
He frowns, “you don’t wanna watch me swim?”
“No. Jennie’s going to be there anyway. I just sit there while you make googly-eyes at her.”
“Oh no,” he says casually, “Jennie and I broke up.”
I raise my brows, “what?”
“Yeah, she’s with Jongin now.”
“... ... sorry about that, I guess.”
“It’s cool, I’m dating Somi now.”
I raise my brows and sigh, “okay...”
“Hey, you did a really good job with your sweater!” he points and smiles widely.
I shake my head, “no way I did. It’s all ruined in the bottom. No one would ever wear this.”
“I would. I’ll wear anything you make because I know you worked hard on them.”
I was about to reply but suddenly this girl called for Mingyu and I am faced with a pretty girl with gleaming eyes. Mingyu grins and introduced her, “Somi, this is my best friend.”
She and I look at each other and give a smile.
“Well, I’m gonna go home now.”
Mingyu turns to me and nods as he puts his arm over Somi’s shoulders, “okay, stay safe.”
     2. First Kiss
You probably guessed that Somi was about as short lived as Jennie. It was cool though. By the time Wendy, Mina, and Yeji came into his life, I was well over the fact that Mingyu liked dating as many pretty girls as he possibly could for the longest of time in the least committed way.
That and it was really hard to keep track.
I don’t think I liked him anymore too anyway.
We had reached a point where we were graduating grade school. Our moms found a high school they thought would be perfect for the both of us. It was partially the knowledge of knowing I wouldn’t stay in this school that made me wanna pull a Mingyu-- as in get in a ‘relationship’.
It’s funny cause, that was the time when Seokmin and I started getting close to each other. Seokmin was the bright kid that always made the class laugh. He used to be in the swimming club too, but he found that he actually liked being in the music club way more, which is why him and Mingyu didn’t get that chance to be as close.
I, however, decided to join the music club in the last year because Mingyu kind of ruined the knitting gig for me when he tried to join in as he promised. He ended up giving up too easily. He began to bother me while I knitted, which ended up with me knocking over a raspberry slurry on one of my club members work. It was white too, and I was simply too embarrassed to come back, although I knew when she said I didn’t have to worry about it, she genuinely meant it.
I too tried getting into swimming, but the lack of girls in the club made it almost impossible for me to be comfortable.
Seokmin and I began to eat lunch together and stuff. Of course, Mingyu and I always ate together, he’d even join us and Seokmin too sometimes, but he was mostly always preoccupied with his new girlfriend anyway. It was cool.
During the end of one of our club meetings, Seokmin bought me ice cream and we ate it by the field.
“I’m really sad that we won’t be clubmates next year,” Seokmin said.
“Me too,” I say licking some ice cream, “you’re really cool.”
“I think you’re really cool too.”
I turn to him and hand him a bag, "here. In return for the ice cream."
Seokmin took it and pulled out the scarf, "it's a scarf."
I nod, "I knitted it myself. It should cost a thousand if I sold it."
"Wait," Seokmin turned to me, "really?"
"Nope," I say with a chuckle, "but it is also a thank you for being my friend when Mingyu's not around. I really do like hanging out with you."
Seokmin is silent for a while. I don't mind. He then begins to be a little restless, shuffling here and there, “ya... I wanted to say before you move schools that, I... likehaveacrushonyou.”
I take a moment to reply, not really knowing what he said, “What was that?”
Seokmin looks away, “I... haveacrushonyou.”
“You... have a crush on me?”
Seokmin turns to me in shock, as if I wasn’t supposed to hear that, then gulps, “yeah.”
“I... I don’t know what to say...”
He sighs, “it’s fine.”
There is an awkward silence for a while. Seokmin turns to me, “you know, you have ice cream on your chin.”
I feel my cheeks burn. I wipe my chin. I rebut, “you have ice cream on your shirt.”
He visibly panics, “oh man, my mom’s gonna kill--” when he turns and sees nothing, I begin to laugh. He rolls his eyes and chuckles lowly.
There is silence again, but it was no longer as awkward. At this point, we had both finished our ice creams. He then takes the scarf I made and wears it, "my favorite color is blue."
"Oh what a coincidence," I say because the scarf I made was deep blue.
Seokmin turns to me and I turn to him. I look away, but when I turn back he’s still looking. I punch his shoulder, “stop being weird.”
“I’m not being weird.”
“Then why are you looking at me like that.”
“Because I wanna kiss you.”
“What?”
Seokmin abruptly stands, “I said I think we should go now.”
He begins to pace around, but I just stay put in my place. He turns back to me, realizing this and sits back down, faced back at me. When he finally turns back, he says, “maybe your mom is already there.”
I turn to him without saying a word. He looks back at me in the same way, but we’re both thinking the same thing, I think.
“Do you want to kiss me?” I whisper.
He grips his hands and nods, “yes.”
I nod back, “okay.”
Seokmin then leans in and places his lips on mine. It’s quick and it’s sweet, but my entire body burns up.
     3. High School
Seokmin and I had an unspoken thing up until we graduated grade school. I guess between the two of us, it was clear there was no point in being boyfriend-girlfriend because, well, we were going to different schools.
I remember on the first day of high school, I jumped into Mingyu’s arms and hugged him because we rarely got to hang out by the end of the year, and we didn’t even realize it.
The very first thing we talked about was--
“You kissed Lee Seokmin!!!” Mingyu blurts in shock and slaps his hands on his face. He grows red with anger, “ya!! What the hell are you thinking?!”
“What? You’ve had like a hundred girlfriends! And I’m sure you’ve kissed them all.”
“YA! I’ve never kissed any of my girlfriends! What do you think of me, a pervert?”
“YA! Seokmin is not a pervert. He’s really sweet.”
“But he kissed you! He kissed you!”
I pull my head back and point, “what is your problem? Can’t he kiss me? Am I so ugly that it disgusts you?”
“NO! WHAT IF HE TRIED TO DO SOMETHING ELSE!”
“What? Like what, Mingyu?”
Mingyu huffs, “I know how guys think. He’s probably worse than me because he actually kissed you.”
“Oh whatever, Kim Mingyu!”
“Don’t you dare walk away from me, or else I’ll tell your mother!”
I snap at him and feel my heart drop, “you wouldn’t dare.”
“Watch me.”
He held that over me for the longest time. It was why I wound up with multiple scarves and a sweaters during this time. He made sure he made it clear that he could blabber about it to my mom everyday. Because of this, he made me buy him snacks and help him out with his homework. Also, he wanted that sweater I made.
During one time when we were in my house as we studied fractions and baby algebra, Mingyu suddenly tapped a pencil on my head and asked, “was it good?”
We were both on my bed, sprawled on our chests in front of our modules.
“What was good, Mingyu? We're doing fractions.”
“Seokmin’s kiss.”
I felt my soul leave me, and I whisper-yelled, “keep it down, you idiot.”
Mingyu sniffled and pressed on, “well was it?”
“I mean I guess... it was really quick. Like this,” I illustrate by clapping my hands lightly and slowly.
Mingyu shifted to my side and turns to the activity at hand, “I’m sure I kiss better than him.”
“Pssh, you’ve never even kissed a girl in your life.”
Mingyu suddenly moves in closely, “you want me to show you I’m a good kisser?”
I simultaneously freeze and feel myself burn red.
Mingyu blinks then cackles, “ah, you were scared there for a second, weren’t you? I-” I shove him off the bed.
“Honey, what was that sound?" my mother calls from downstairs.
“Mingyu being an idiot and falling off the bed.”
And as the said Gyu screamed at me for shoving him, I feel my stomach swirl in multiple directions. Maybe I wasn’t over Mingyu like I thought.
     4. Confessions
It was on our second year that I first heard some girl say ‘I like Mingyu’. This was the day I realized... well, I think I did too-- I liked Minqyu-- still liked him internally after all this time. It’s funny that I didn’t even notice that he was taller than me at this point, much, much taller than me. His body was just so long you would never believed me if I told you I used to be taller than him.
I also didn’t notice that he actually had a decent haircut now, and how full his lips were, and how clear his eyes were. To me, he still reeked of the boy from the playground that just wanted me to play with him.
It was why I still found it so bizarre that he got a bunch of love letters and chocolate on valentines day, when he was still an immature tall boy that still thought the number 69 was hilarious.
Okay, perhaps I was upset that other girls were giving him attention...
“I got in the swimming team!” Mingyu exclaimed at lunch. I grinned and squeezed his bicep, “that’s great, Gyu! Congrats.”
“They don’t really let people go into the pool for no reason, so you can’t see how fast I’ve gotten since grade school.”
“It’s okay, Gyu. With how long your limbs are, I’m willing to believe you’re the fastest out of all of them. Plus, you’ve been swimming since you were 6, so you’re pretty good.”
“Thanks, that means a lot to me.” Mingyu then pulls out some chocolate from his bag, “you want some?”
“No thanks.”
“Suit yourself.”
Later that day, I was supposed to return Mingyu’s book because he left it with me accidentally during lunch, so I swung by the pool just to hand it to him. Funnily enough, I saw him feverishly kissing a girl by the pool’s bathroom.
I suppose kissing does count as something to do.
     5. The Girlfriend
Her name was Tiffany Young and she was breathtaking. I hated her, damn, I wanted to hate her, but she was just perfect. I envied her, from the way she looked, to the way she dressed, to how sweet and smart she was, and how she held Mingyu’s hand when the teachers weren’t looking.
She was a year older than us, which is why I hated the word noona with a passion, especially with how Mingyu rolled it off his tongue.
I half expected them to call it quits by the end of the month, then the next end of that month, but up until Mingyu made it to the regional event of the swimming competition, she was there. She was there when he practiced, she was there during lunch, she was just there. And right now as we cheered on for Kim Mingyu, she sat there next to me and shared chips with me.
I’ll never forget how lovesick Mingyu was when he spotted us in the crowd just after he swam a lap, hpw he screamed against the cheering crowd, “I love you Tiffany noona!” just loud enough for her to hear.
I remember how big Tiffany’s smile was when she heard that, how she leaned up against me and squealed, “wah, Mingyu’s such an idiot.”
     6. Basketball
By the next year of high school, Mingyu was the talk of the town for winning every medal he could. As a varsity player, he was excepted from PE, but he loved sports so much that he still joined it and made whichever team he was playing with win.
This year, we had basketball. It was safe to say he was so good, the coach of the basketball team was so heartbroken that he was a swimmer. He sometimes made Mingyu sit in the bleachers so he wouldn’t have to see him play.
Mingyu didn’t mind, because it meant he got to see me play ‘like a kid’.
Our teacher called for a time out and Mingyu screeched in laughter at me, “you’re so short.”
I shove him. He laughs even more then asks, “you want me to teach you?
“Basketball will not benefit my existence, so I’ll pass.”
“Ever the optimist.”
I roll my eyes at him. He was persistent and grabbed me, “come on, if I can teach Tiffany noona how to shoot well, I can teach you.”
I grunt and shove him, “absolutely not. Tiffany’s good at everything!”
“Come on now, you’re the girl that could outrun me when we were little. Tiffany cried when she broke a nail trying to open a soda can.”
“That’s because it hurts, you misogynistic oaf.”
Mingyu makes a face, “hey, I love Tif. I’m just trying to say that when you fell trying to catch me, you didn’t bat an eye and kept running with blood on your knee, so.”
“What does that even have to do with basketball?”
“You are a lot more athletic than you think,” Mingyu points and grabs a ball from the floor. “Come on it’s simple, just position your hands like this, bend a bit, jump and throw.”
He scores a 3 point shot, and the entire class claps. Our teacher looks longingly at Mingyu. Mingyu bows at the appraisal. And I become acutely aware everyone is looking at us.
“That’s literally so much easier said than done,” I point, as Mingyu grabs the ball and hands it to me. “Then try doing it.”
I sigh. I go ahead with my attempt, unbelievably half-assed, but Mingyu grabs the ball before I can throw it, “Come on, try what I told you to do.”
Mingyu grabs my shoulders, knocks at the back of my knee to have me bend down, then positions my hands up. He’s basically hugging me from behind, and when he pulls away, he crosses his arms and nods, “now jump and dunk.:
I roll my eyes, ignoring the thumping in my chest, then give it my best shot.
I am taken aback when the class cheers because I actually shot it. I jump and turn to Mingyu in glee, and I see he just has a stupid smirk on his face. He is shaking one hand in the air and then scoffs, “that’s my girl.”
We then high-five and Mingyu side hugs me. It was then out teacher called for the game to start again.
After PE, our teacher invited us all to watch the basketball game later that day. I went up to a classmate of mind named Chaerin, and asked her if she wanted to watch with me, since I knew she had a crush on one of the guys in the basketball team.
Chaerin squealed and instantly agreed. Mingyu, like the nosy guy he was, asked what we were on about. I turn to him and chuckle, “she’s going to confess to her crush today.”
“Oh my gosh, you big mouthed brat!” Chaerin exclaimed, slapping my arm.
Mingyu was clearly interested in the gossip and begged Chaerin to tell him, “you know, maybe I know him and could hit you two up.”
Chaerin didn't want to say it, but Mingyu was a notorious whine-baby. Eventually she caves and reluctantly confesses, “Wong Yukhei.”
“AH LUCAS!” Mingyu screamed.
“OH MY GOSH, YOU SIREN!” Chaerin panics and shoves Mingyu. He laughs like an annoying jock and smiles, “no, yeah, he’s super cool. He’s really good at basketball too. Not as good as me but-”
“Oh stop, you show off,” I scold.
“I could-- oh gosh, I just remembered.”
“What?”
“I have this thing with noona today. Well, whatever, I’ll try to talk to Lucas about you to him if I see him.”
Surely enough, later that day, we went ahead and watched the basketball game and it was so much fun. I kept calling for Yukhei during the game and pointed at Chaerin so blatantly. I’m pretty sure my arm was going to fall off from the assault it got from the beatings she gave me, but I still went through with it every time he made it near our area.
When it was high time to come up to him and spill Chaerin’s beans, we rushed down the bleachers, figuring there may be a lot of girls who wanted to do the same since they had just won the game.
“Lucas!” I called, grabbing his attention when we was close enough.
He wiped the sweat from his brow and his teammate beside him, Jeon Wonwoo from Home Economics, bent down and looked our way. Chaerin gulps and grips me, pulling away. I snap at her and turn to Lucas with a smile, “Lucas, my friend Chaerin has something to say to you.”
Lucas turns to Wonwoo and chuckles. He jumps over the bench and smiles, “yeah, I can talk.”
I grin and turn away to give them some privacy. By the time I’m pretty far, I turn and realize Wonwoo was as daft as ever and didn’t move an inch. I groan and sprint over, grabbing Wonwoo by the shirt and pulling him away. He whined as he grabbed his water bottle, “ya, what is your deal?!”
I shoot him a look.
When we’re far enough, I snap at Wonwoo, “Chaerin’s gonna confess! We should give them privacy.”
He drinks his cold water and turns to me, “I don’t see why I couldn’t fix my bag while they did.”
“Oh my gosh, this is literally why I hate being your partner in cooking. You’re so obviously oblivious.”
“I’m not oblivious, I just don’t see why I can’t fix my bag as they talk.”
I sigh, “if you confessed to someone, would you want someone else to hear it?”
Wonwoo thinks for a moment, “I think you know the answer to that.”
“Exactly! You may be on the basketball team, but that doesn’t mean you necessarily enjoy the attention that comes with it.”
Wonwoo is silent. I feel the need to further explain, “come on, everyone knows you turn down all the confessions you get from girls. And, you’re my classmate, you don’t normally speak up in class. That’s fine.”
He says nothing again.
“That one time when one of the girls that liked you put strawberry milk on my table thinking it was yours, with a sticky note that had a single W on it-- yeah, I look over my shoulder from time to time to see if some chick is ready to take me out for drinking it.”
Wonwoo turns to me, “I gave it to you because you like strawberry milk and I don’t.”
“And I took it because I was hungry. But I still feel like I have a target on my back.”
Wonwoo chuckles and shakes his head, drinking water yet again. He pats my back and raises a brow, “now you have one.”
“Wait, did you just stick something behind my back.”
“Clearly, I was holding a bullseye all this time.”
I scoff and feel my back either way. I then cross my arms at him and turn to Lucas and Chaerin. They were smiling now, or at least I could bet Chaerin was because of how big Lucas was smiling.
“I like you.”
I turn to Wonwoo, “what?”
“That’s how I would confess,” he says not looking at me, “simple, direct. I like you.”
He finally turns to me and I tilt my head, “I like that. It’s clear and honest.”
Wonwoo’s expression changes, “I thought you just said you liked me.”
I shove him just as he’s about to take another drink. He gives me a look, “ya.”
“In your dreams, Jeon.”
“Well, I must be dreaming then,” Wonwoo makes a face.
I chuckle and tut, “hit the showers, you slime ball.”
   7. Strawberry Milk
“Hey, you wanna have lunch together today?” Wonwoo asked, right after our class ended.
“You know what, Chaerin and Lucas are going to eat together, so I’d really not get in the middle of that. And Mingyu is probably going to eat with Tiffany unnie and her friends again today, and I get really awkward around them, so I’ll take it. Lemme just text Gyu so he doesn’t look for me.”
Wonwoo looks at me then nods. I quickly text Mingyu.
“You’re really close with Mingyu, huh?”
I smile and nod, “we grew up together, like, since preschool.”
Wonwoo raises his brows, “wow. I had no idea.”
“Yeah, he was like, my hero. My mom used to make me wear these dresses from my grandmother, and I had to make sure I never got them dirty. Mingyu wanted to play with me though, and I would always end up with a dirty dress. Eventually, my mom realized I was a kid that had to play, so I got out of those dresses and had my freedom.”
Wonwoo smiles slowly, “he must hang that over you a lot, huh.”
“Nah, mostly, it’s the fact that I had my first kiss in grade school and my mom doesn’t know about it.”
Wonwoo chuckles, “well, I caught him and his girlfriend making out in the gym once, so I’d say you’re pretty even.”
“Exactly.”
When we got to the cafeteria and sat down, Wonwoo gave me a strawberry milk. I turned to him and gave a look, “oh, I do not want to die today.”
“Relax, I bought this for you.”
“Even worse!”
Wonwoo gives me a look, “is it really that bad that you can’t take it from me. Like how scary could a girl that likes me be?"
“Girls can jump to all sorts of conclusions with the guy they like. They may just think you like me because of this so, you gotta be careful.
“I do like you though."
I knit my brows and turns to him.
“I like you... the strawberry milk on your desk was from me. It was kind of scary to me that you figured W stood for Wonwoo. I thought you might’ve began to, like, wonder maybe the W stood for Woozi or something. So when you said someone mistook my table for yours, I went with it.”
“... Woozi’s real name his Jihoon though.”
Wonwoo chuckles, shaking his head, “that’s all you have to say?”
“Ya! I’ve been texting you nonstop!” Mingyu suddenly pants as he comes up next to me. “Are you replacing me with someone from the basketball team too, huh?”
I turn to Mingyu as he heaves. I see his red eyes and his messy hair, “what are you talking about? Are you okay?”
“NO I’M NOT OKAY! I just found my girlfriend’s tongue down the basketball captain’s throat and now my best friend is with their point guard. Thanks for the head up, by the way, Jeon.”
“Dude, I had no idea Johnny was seeing Tiffany.” Wonwoo says.
“Oh of course not, just like I didn’t know that you string girls around you just to reject them like a douchebag!”
“Mingyu! What the hell?!”
Mingyu huffs, “if you ever think of hurting my best friend I will bash your face in until not even your mom recognizes you.”
I shoot up and grab Mingyu by the shoulders. “You need to calm down.”
I turn to Wonwoo and frown, “I’m really sorry.” I say, grabbing my things and ushering the piping Mingyu off.
Wonwoo looks at the strawberry milk on the table.
Mingyu began to explode in the swimming pool side. I kept telling him to calm down because we would be dead meat if we ever got caught sneaking in here.
“I JUST DON’T GET IT! WHY WOULD SHE STILL BE WITH ME IF SHE HAD FEELINGS FOR HER EX!”
I whine and raise my brows, “I’m really sorry Gyu. I don’t have the answers but you need to calm down...”
“I CAN’T calm down!” Mingyu groaned deeply.
Mingyu sat down roughly next to me and punched his lap, “I- I gave her everything. I-” he turns to me with teary eyes, “you know... I booked a motel for us.”
“Oh my gosh, Gyu, you didn’t,” I put my hands to my face. I cover my ears and shake my head.
“I-” he chokes and covers his face, “I loved her. I-” he began to sob, “I still do... and it just hurts so much.”
I didn’t know what to say. I think Mingyu didn’t really want to hear anything as he just crumbled against my shoulder.
“To think she said that I was the unfaithful one,” he begins, “I talked to Lucas about Chaerin like I promised. She heard about it and claimed I was swooning about another girl to one of my friends. I had to explain repeatedly that Chaerin liked Lucas.
“And whenever she’d say I was too close to you. Gosh I hated it so much. She hated it when I wore the sweater you gave me. Then Tif would say you looked at me more than a friend and that I would actually chose you over her if it came to it. Then I would tell her it’s her that I drove to at midnight, and it’s her that I liked so bad, but I guess she never believed me."
He pulled me close when I said this. It didn’t make his word hurt any less.
“It was never enough,” Mingyu whispered. “She was just looking for an excuse to hide her guilt.”
So much changed after that.
Mingyu got so much more busy with his swimming practice that we rarely hung out anymore He also began hanging out with his swimming buddies outside the pool. Of course, he would bring me along, but again, I was kind of just lost in the mix everything. He grew closest to his captain, Seungcheol.
Now Seungcheol had a girlfriend named Krystal, and she was the sweetest. She tired to make me feel included in their conversations, but she could only do so much because she was also a swimmer and it was kind of inevitable that I would be left out.
Eventually, I started hanging less and less with Mingyu and more and more with Wonwoo during lunch. Ever since Mingyu crashed in on us, we’ve kind of been acting as if nothing happened that time. As in that whole shebang of a confession. That is, up until he asked me out on the date.
I didn't know what to say, so I just was honest from the beginning. I told him I didn’t know how I felt towards him. He said he understood.
As time went by, I found myself agreeing to go on that date with him. I began to look forward to the strawberry milk on my desk during Wednesday Home Economic classes. I began to walk with him to his basketball practices and would wait for him to finish sometimes. Next thing I knew, I called him Nunu because it pissed him off.
It was during one of his practices, while he was drinking water that really made a difference. He kissed me to shut me up from teasing him with the 'horrible' name I thought of, and boy it was effective. He then took my hand and gave me what I identified as a ticket.
I was still too dazed from the kiss to have any other thoughts from that.
Wonwoo turned to me, “this is for our tournament on Saturday. I bought two tickets, just in case your mom won’t let you go without her. It’s pretty late so...”
“Wait, you want to meet my mom?"
Wonwoo turns to his feet, “I kinda want to meet everyone important in your life.”
He rubs his sweaty arm, “and like, I want you to be my girlfriend too.”
I hold back a laugh, “I dunno, you smell kinda bad.”
Wonwoo’s face lights up. He gives me a look, “Should I ask after practice then?”
“Pass, I’ll just say yes too anyway.”
Wonwoo beams and he kisses my cheek. He jumps up and around as I look at him with a shocked expression. I look at him and whisper-yell, “I can’t believe you kissed me twice during your break.”
“I can. I’ll shoot 3 points for you.”
“If you purposefully miss, I’m breaking up with you.”
“Ah, it’s that easy to get out of this relationship? I’ll take note of that.”
     8. Game Time
“Mingyu! I have something to tell you.” I say as I come up to his locker early in the morning.
“No.”
I pull my head back, “no?”
Mingyu looks at me, “if you’re going to ask me to go with you to the basketball tournament, my answer is no.”
“Wait, what?”
“Lucas told me Wonwoo bought two tickets and assumed he might give them to you. He told me as a heads up.”
“A heads up for what?” I ask.
“In case you ask me. But there is absolutely no way I will watch a game where the guy she cheated on me with will be there.”
“Uhm... Wonwoo bought me an extra ticket in case mom wouldn’t let me go by myself. I did end up going with my mom to the game. But that’s beside the fact that the game was last Saturday. I was just gonna tell you that Wonwoo and I were a couple now.”
Mingyu turned to me with blown eyes, “wait what?”
“Wonwoo’s my boyfriend now.”
“Your first boyfriend.”
“Don’t say it like that, it sounds like I have the intention to break up with him.”
“You will,” he says.”
I snap at him, “Mingyu!”
“If we broke up, so will you.”
I raise my brows, “that was extremely uncalled for. Tiffany and Wonwoo are two different people.”
Mingyu makes a face at the mention of her name. He licks his front teeth, “Just because he gives you strawberry milk, doesn't mean he’s special. He’s a guy! He just want to get in your pants.”
“Is that what you thought with Tiffany?!”
“No!”
“Exactly! He could be just as scared as being cheated on as you are.”
“Oh because you’ll cheating on him with me, right? That's what I am to you?”
I am taken aback by his words, “what is wrong with you Mingyu?”
“Nothing, but that hickey on your neck has something wrong. Nice touch with the band aid, by the way."
“Why are you so aggressive! I burned my neck with an iron cause I curled my hair to look pretty for my date. My mom can vouch for me.”
He scoffs and, "and what? Auntie approves of him?”
“As a matter of fact, she does.”
“Okay then! So why are you telling me about your healthy relationship? To rub it in? To ruin my day?”
“GAH!” I erupt and wipe my face, “because your my best friend, Gyu!” I look at him in frustration for a second. He wasn’t expecting that, it s seems. I feel tears well in my eyes, “but clearly you don't think so anymore.”
Mingyu instantly deflates. I begin to heave heavily. I turn away and fight the tears.
“Wait, I-”
“Don’t EVER talk to me again, Kim Mingyu.”
     9. University Madness
Graduation came like a thief in the night. The next thing I knew I got in to my dream university in Seoul and Wonwoo and I were taking pictures with each other’s parents.
I gave a big smile as Wonwoo's parents explain how much Wonwoo talked about me. It's cute how he turned pink at it. It made the pink beanie I made him all the more appropriate for the occasion.
And he never did talk to me again.... Mingyu I mean.
He tried to initially, but I was too upset with him to give him time to get a word in. When Wonwoo finally knocked some sense into my head, Mingyu stopped trying, and I didn’t want to have to initiate a talk with him. Part of me was glad I didn't have to confront him, but an ever bigger part of me wanted to lash out on him for thinking so little of our friendship, for giving up so easily on trying to get my forgiveness.
Every time I saw him walking down the hallway, or whenever we’d painfully get grouped together in PE, or in another subject, I’d feel so conflicted. I wanted to reach out to him, but in the times I got a spine to do it, I would notice how he would look away or try and avoid my line of sight.
I wound up knitting a blanket for Wonwoo by the end of this, in frustration, in surrender. It made for a warm nights sleep, and I think, somehow, when I ended the last bit of it, all my anger had gone.
Wonwoo was actually disappointed that I was going to graduate with Mingyu as an enemy. I reasoned that Mingyu wasn’t my enemy... he was just no longer my best friend.
My mom and his mom were still best friends though, so when they saw each other during the graduation, they demanded we take a picture.
Of course, I could never do that to Mrs. Kim when she was so happy; I could never just say his son took his anger out on me which is why we no longer spoke to each other. So I sucked it up and smiled the brightest smile I could and even raised two fingers behind Mingyu’s head for the shot.
My mom and Mrs. Kim showed me the picture they took. I was smiling brightly, and Mingyu was looking at me with an unreadable expression.
“Aigoo, how cute. You two look just like when you were in preschool.”
“Yeah, except Mingyu was shorter than my daughter then. Now look at him.”
Yes. It was honestly bizarre seeing him with his broad shoulders a year and a half in after graduation. He glowed in the sunlight, as he made his way across the field. It seemed like he was in a friendly game of football. He seemed to be enjoying it a lot.
In all this time spent in college, I had no idea Mingyu was that star swimmer all the girls kept talking about. He was the one with the killer smile and the sculpted arms. He was the one with the big personality and the charisma.
It was absolutely mental that the moment I noticed him, he was everywhere I turned. It made me unbelievably sour.
My friend Gora asked me why I hated it every time someone mentioned him, and so I told her why, cover to cover.
She was shocked that Mingyu could say and think that about Wonwoo, when my boyfriend drove to Seoul and back every Saturday just to meet with me.
It made her stop liking Mingyu altogether and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t grateful she sided with me.
When one Saturday came, Wonwoo and I hung out all day. There was something with him, I could tell. He was quiet, even for him.
“Nunu-ya, is there something bothering you.”
Wonwoo clenches his jaw, “my dad got his dream job."
I knit my brows at the tone in which he said that.. I offer a smile, "hey that's great news."
He turns to me and releases a breath, turning away, "my family is moving to Denmark.”
“What?”
“My dad got a job in Denmark as a head architecture in a big firm. He wants me to finish my studies there since they will cover the expenses.”
“So... you’re leaving.”
Wonwoo sniffles, “I told him I wanted to stay, not for anyone but myself, but he refuses to leave if we don’t all come with him. My dad lost his parents early on, so he wants us all to just be together. He also doesn’t like the idea of me living in Korea all alone.”
I begin to cry when I realize where this is going.
Wonwoo takes my hand, “I thought about this so much. I hate myself for dragging this out as long as I could, but I just could bring myself to leave you.”
“Wonwoo...”
“I think it'll be much better though if we break up.”
“Wonwoo, please, we don’t have to do that.”
Wonwoo begins to wipe at his face, “It’s already so hard for us now when we’re two cities away. I don’t even know what I’d do if we were countries, continents apart.”
“what would it even change Wowoo? It'll just hurt?"
“At least I’d know you’d be able to happy without me," he says, placing the pink hat I knitted on my head.
I may have been dramatic when I said I wouldn’t be happy without him, but that’s what it felt like.
It was really nobody’s fault, but it hurt so much.
I still texted him after he left. He only replied once to say he wouldn't be replying again.
A month later, Gora managed to get me to go to a party with her. I knew she genuinely was trying to make me enjoy going out again, but I just couldn’t. It got especially worse since I spotted Mingyu in the crowd, making out with some chick with blonde hair, then another time with a girl with black hair. Either Mingyu was getting lip herpes from making out with multiple strangers, the girl had wigs in her bag, or I was actually getting drunk from this soda I was drinking and was seeing things. I had an extremely strong feeling it was the first thing though.
And in all my streak of unluckiness, Mingyu kept coming around. Gora’s roommate just had to bring him over one night while we were watching a film. The look on his face when he saw, or should I say gawked at me, made me want to hurl. Safe to say, I never wanted to watch movie’s at Gora’s place ever again.
Then, my own roommate, Suzy, happened to be taking the same course as Mingyu and ended up becoming partners for this tedious project they had.
I did not take kindly that Mingyu was in my dorm without Suzy because she had to pickup something. I wasn’t angry at Suzy, she didn’t know, what I was pissed about was the fact that Mingyu agreed to stay here, knowing I was doing my own homework on my side of the room. It didn't help when I recognized the sweater he was clearly wearing for me to see.
“Look, I’m sorry about what I said that day to you. I was taking out my frustrations on you and Wonwoo. It was really immature of me.”
I think if just ignoring him, pretend like he was talking to himself. But I felt the desire to bite back.
I from my text book, to him, and shrug, “okay.”
Mingyu is surprised I even acknowledged his presence that he dumbly repeats what I just said, “okay?”
I turn back to my text book, “Wonwoo got me to forgive you a long time before graduation. I just never talked to you again.”
Mingyu flinches, “...are you still with him?”
“What do you think?”
He doesn’t reply to that.
“It was really hard without you by my side. I did a lot of things that you probably would hate.”
I scoff and roll my eyes, “And it you think it wasn’t hard for me. Did you think it didn’t hurt me? You’re the one that snapped and attacked me. And-- I’m not your mom, okay. It’s not my responsibility to keep you in check. I’m not your friend anymore either. If you’re trying to make amends, just don’t. It’s not a nice time for me. I have a lot going on already. You’re here because you have a project with Suzy and nothing else. After it, I don’t want to see you at all."
He was silenced after that. By the time Suzy comes back, I’m already buried in my studies and earphones.
The only thing that made me come to life was when I was reintroduced to Seokmin through our mutual friend, Soonyoung. He made me laugh until my face hurt and it was the best feeling in the world.
We started hanging out like we never could in grade school. He was like a breath of fresh air, and it was so comforting to know that even though he clearly matured after grade school, became taller than me, and had a leaner physique, he was still as bright and as sweet as I remembered.
“I have to ask,” Seokmin starts as we make our way down a tiny isle in the university convenience store, “did I ever have a chance with you in grade school or did you like Mingyu?”
My stomach dropped at the mention of his name, “what? Why do you ask so suddenly?”
“Well, you and him were super close. I dunno. For me, I always kind of knew he was never serious with the girls he had dated. Looking back, he may have only dated them to get you jealous.”
“That’s ridiculous. We were close but he did not like me.”
“So you liked him then?”
I sigh, “I did,” I say grabbing some strawberry milk. I look at it and put it down, opting for chocolate instead, “for like a hot second.”
“You didn’t end up dating in high school? Didn’t you to move to the same place?”
I give him a look, “noooo,” I shake my head, “I mean, we did go to the same school, but he ended up dating a girl named Tiffany.”
Seokmin tilts his head and grabs some chips. He sucks in a breath, “sounds horrible.”
I can’t help but laugh at that, “She was... perfect, up until she cheated on him.”
Seokmin flashes his teeth, “yikes.”
I shrug, “it’s probably why he sleeps around now.”
“You’re still in contact with him?”
“He goes to our school, Min.”
“Wait, what? Really?”
I nod.
“Damn, next thing you know all his exes go here too.”
I slap my hand on my mouth to hold in my laughter.
     10. Replay
It’s funny how the world kept getting smaller when I began to acknowledge it.
Soonyoung decided on celebrating his birthday in one of his favorite restaurants. Clearly the boy was well off because the entire place was filled to the brim with his guests.
One thing I didn’t realize about Soonyoung though was that he too was a swimmer and a member of the swimming team, which meant the captain, Kim Mingyu, was there in the celebration. To be specific, he blatantly chose the seat in front of me, as if to make it look like he wanted to catch up with Seokmin and I.
How treacherous of him to assume that I wouldn’t tell Seokmin about what he did to me, and how much more it is because he was right.
Drunk Soonyoung was too much. He tried to kiss me, and Seokmin, and that friend he had whose name I found was Jun. Even the old lady that owned the place could not escape. What I dreaded what the fact, though he was shitfaced so early on, Soonyoung was acutely aware he was the birthday boy and he could fundamentally get anyone in the place to do his bidding.
And his bidding was a wild game of Never Have I Ever.
He didn’t even begin to ease it up, he outright just said, “Never have I ever got caught with someone in the parking lot,” to which he clearly knew most of the guys in the swimming team would have to drink to.
One of them said, “never have I ever been cheated on,” to which once again a lot of people drank to. Mingyu bitterly downed a shot in one go.
When it got to Seokmin, he drunkenly admitted, “never have I ever been liked by someone I liked.”
“Oh fuck, that’s depressing,” a guy named Joshua called, right before he chugged an almost empty bottle of soju.
I turned to him and I frowned, “hey, I liked you.”
Seokmin buzzed his lips, “no you didn’t. You liked my ice cream cone but not me.”
“SHIT, ICE CREAM CONE ALERT!” Soonyoung shouted. He then punched the air, “kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss--” “Sit down, Kwon.” Mingyu growled, pulling his friend down. Soonyoung then proceeded to try and kiss him, to which Mingyu made a face to and offered his cheek, “are you happy now?”
“Yes,” he said, embracing Mingyu.
I couldn’t help but chuckle and coo at that.
Regretfully, Mingyu caught on. On the other hand, Soonyoung suddenly demanded, “your turn, ice cream cone lover!”
“Hmm, never have I ever... not been allergic to dust.”
There is silence between us.
“What?” Soonyoung hiccups.
“It means I’m allergic to dust, tiger.”
He chuckles at the nickname, but he still raises a finger, “noooo, go again, that was lame.”
“Fine. Never have I ever been to a booked a motel with someone.”
Mingyu takes a sharp swig. Soonyoung misses the point, “where do you do it then?”
“What?”
“If not in a motel, then where?”
I clear my throat, “In the basketball court?”
Seokmin pulls back, “YOU DID WHAT NOW?”
“I’m joking, Seokmin.”
“Nuh, uh, uh, jokes are always half meant,” Soonyoung calls, then turns to Mingyu, “your turn.”
Mingyu turns to his drink, “never have I ever wished I could turn back time more than anything.”
“Damn,” a Jeonghan says, “I felt that.”
Soonyoung makes a face, “wait does that mean you want to turn back time or no?”
Mingyu clears his throat and takes a drink, “whatever.”
Soonyoung suddenly stands and blurts out, “ya, this ones for the idiots here. Never have I ever held in a confession from someone I like, because I’m not an idiot!”
Somehow, everyone is shocked that Mingyu takes a swig. To be honest, I was one of them.
“Ya, ya, ya, ya! Kim Mingyu doesn’t have the guts to spill his guts?”
“Shut up,” Mingyu threatens softly.
“Ya, who was it though?”
“Yeah, who was girl the Kim Mingyu was afraid of getting rejected by.”
They all shouted at him for an answer, and he was clearly uncomfortable. Seokmin came to his rescue, and threated to slap anyone who raised their voice, mostly for his headache, he says.
“My best friend,” Mingyu admits under his breath. Soonyoung catches it though and his face drops just as my stomach does.
“YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON ME!” Soonyoung exclaims, “IS THAT WHY YOU LET ME KISS YOU? I’M GOING TO CRY. I LOVE YOU BUT NO HOMO BRO, NO HOMO.”
Mingyu threatens, “YA! You want me to revert you back into a Neanderthal?”
We’re all pretty drunk by the end of the night. I personally could have gotten home by myself, but I still had Gora pick me up. I stood just outside the place, since Gora said she was about to come.
“Can we talk?"
I turn and see Mingyu. I suck in a breath and sigh, “I’m not in the right mind to talk to you.”
“It’s never going to be the right moment for you.”
I scoff, “I’m always the villian right?”
“That’s not what I said.”
“Well I would prefer you said nothing at all, so, we’re even.”
Mingyu runs his hands through his hair, “I liked you okay. I freaked out because you were suddenly so far away. But I liked you. I did. I do.”
I scoff and turn to him, “you don’t like me Mingyu. Do you honestly like someone but go around making out with the first girl you see?”
“I don’t do that anymore.”
I chuckle dryly, “well maybe not, but you did.”
Mingyu looks at the brink of tears, and it hurts, because beside the fact he cried in my arms about his then girlfriend, he only ever cried when we were in preschool because one of the boys said he was too annoying to be part of their game. I remember his tiny self sobbing in a corner with the teacher. I remember him refusing to tell anyone about it, anyone but me.
“I liked you since you defended me from those kids that called me annoying.”
I chuckled bitterly, “Hmm... and is that why you got all those girlfriends, what? To make me jealous?”
“I-I don’t... maybe... yes!”
“Mingyu!”
“I was a kid, okay! And you were my best friend.”
“EXACTLY! I WAS YOUR BESTFRIEND!” I shake my head, "Me! No one else... and yet you changed so much after Tiffany. You got so scared of trusting someone that you drove away the first person you ever trusted.”
Mingyu pulled on his collar, “I’m... I’m sorry.”
“I know you are, but I just can’t deal with you right now, Gyu.”
Mingyu felt some surge of hope when he heard that nickname. He missed being called that from his best friend. He tries to speak up, but he can’t.
Soonyoung suddenly tumbles out of the restaurant and I turn away from Mingyu. Just as I do that, I catch the sight of Gora walking up to me from afar. I go up to her and Mingyu calls out for me.
Soonyoung however tries to kiss him again, much to my advantage.

♪ The Last Day of Summer With You
Kim Mingyu : Pool Games
Tumblr media
There were soft ripples on the water as you dipped your feet inside your backyard pool.
The pool was filtered and cleaned early this morning because you and your boyfriend had plans to spend the humid summer day in your cool, refreshing pool. To fit this concept, you had changed into a proper swimming outfit.
Your pool was decorated with floating pool noodles, a unicorn floaty, and a donut floaty, all of which were drifting toward the middle of the pool that was an aquamarine color. With the sun shining down so brightly, the pool looked even more beautiful with the reflection of the sunlight mixing with the color was dazzling.
Sitting on the ledge of the swimming pool, you kicked your feet gently, feeling the cold water splash against your legs. You were waiting for Mingyu to bring the rubber ducky floaties.
Feeling the peacefulness of the moment, you closed your eyes while staring up at the warm, blinding sunlight. The sun was so bright that you could see orange light through your closed eyelids.
Just as you let out a soft breath of relaxation, your transient peaceful moment was interrupted by the playful, excited shouts of your boyfriend, who was running through the backdoor holding the bright yellow duck floaty, shirtless.
His shouts startled you, causing you to open your eyes at the occasion. You turned around and before you knew it, you were grinning while watching Mingyu make a twirl while jumping into the cool water. You laughed because of his cute shouting followed by his imperfect twirl. The splash from his dive reached to you, who was resting on the middle of the rectangular pool's perimeter.
“What was that?” You asked while giggled, moving slightly closer to the right where Mingyu made his funny and adorable dive.
Mingyu rose and wiped his face with his hands. You couldn't help but gaze at his broad shoulders and muscular arms as he raised his hand to draw back his hair.
“Shouldn't we have some fun??” Mingyu replied, smiling so genuinely with his puppy eyes sparkling. You always felt weak for those eyes because he was such a bad liar, everything, especially if it was something sincere, would show in his eyes. His eyes would twinkle and you could always see the hearts shooting out of his eyes whenever he looked at you.
You didn't know how you managed to stay with him this long without passing out. Every time his eyes were shimmering with sparks of love, your heartbeat would fire up.
You smiled at Mingyu as he quickly swam his way over to you, jumping out of the water to sit beside you, water trickling down from his shoulders to his prominent abs. Mingyu ran his hand through his hair again and asked, “Should we have a few competitions?”
You tilted your head while staring at him with a smile. “Competitions? Like what?”
“You know,” Mingyu turned to the pool, glancing at the many, unnecessary floaties, pool noodles, and then at the water, then back to you. He smiled and habitually nodded while he spoke. “Just those racing competitions and holding your breath underwater kind of competitions.”
You both stared into each other's eyes for a few seconds before you answered with a confident, “Okay, game on. The loser would receive a water splash slap from the winner!”
Mingyu chuckled. “That's what the punishment would always be whenever I play with my members. I think you hanging around them has left a small aftereffect.”
You laughed and carefully submerged your lower body into the water. The chilling water made your body vibrate with chills.
Mingyu fell back into the pool and quickly, while swimming like a puppy, caught up with you who was swimming toward the duck floaty.
“Okay, choose your fighter, let's race with the floaties first,” Mingyu said. The two of you stopped and as if you two were thinking the same thing, without even saying anything, you threw out rock and he threw out scissors.
You laughed at your boyfriend's unfortunate luck and pushed yourself over to the duck floaty. It was circular and had a hole in the middle, which you thought would be beneficial for the race. Plus, compared to the donut floaty and unicorn one, it was average-sized. The unicorn was was white with pink hair and a golden horn but it was extremely large, meanwhile, the duck floaty was contrastingly small.
You dragged the duck over to the starting area, which was the left side of the pool. Mingyu had chosen the unicorn floaty.
With a count of three initiated by you, the two of you became boat rowers. You pushed your floaty with your feet while helping yourself stay afloat with the floaties ring. Mingyu had to use his arms to row the unicorn floaty across the pool, to the right side, since it did not have a hole like the duck.
It was no doubt that you were the winner. Mingyu could only sigh as you counted down before splashing his face with all of your might. You could tell that Mingyu wanted to just pick you up, get out of the pool, and throw you back in, but he didn't.
The second race was simpler, without floaties, and you knew that Mingyu was a great swimmer so you could only try your best to reach the end of the pool first.
“I'm not going to go easy on you... even if you're super cute,” Mingyu said, looking determined to win. You felt tempted to just let him win but you didn't want to lose without trying, so you gave the race your all.
When you reached the end of the pool, Mingyu was already waiting for you with an elvish smile.
“I already knew that I'd lose,” You replied, closing your eyes in advance. “Just hurry up with the punishment!”
Mingyu wanted to splash but first, he wanted to stare. Your wet face and hair were somehow sexy in his eyes. Your charms were even more attractive now that he saw this playful side of you again.
You opened one of your eyes to ask why he was taking so long but immediately, once you caught a look at his eyes, you backed away mischievously. Based on the way he was looking at you, you could tell that he wanted a kiss.
“You didn't execute the punishment in time so now, the punishment is invalid!” You said, swimming away while splashing small bits of water at him.
Mingyu snapped out of his daze and started swimming toward you. “Hey! Come on, don't be like that! There was never once a rule like that!”
You giggled and began swimming toward him, who was still trying to get back his chance to splash water at you. While his mouth was distracted talking and his eyes had a bit of sulk, you planted a soft kiss on his wet lips. Your arms traveled from his bare, buff arms, to around his shoulders, your hands patting his wet hair.
Mingyu brought his arms around your waist and you two shared a sweet, romantic, and loving kiss.
You tilted your head as you stared at Mingyu after your lips left each other. Your hand was still caressing the back of his wet head when he said, “One more competition, let's see who holds their breath the longest.”
You smiled at him confidently and nodded. “Deal. The punishment is water splashing.”
“No time limit,” Mingyu added.
At the count of three, you both dove into the water.
Losing track of time, the moment you saw your boyfriend close his eyes, you mischievously and slowly brought your head back up to get some air, trying to trick him.
However, you were quickly caught in the act.
Mingyu got up from under the aquamarine pool water and didn't hesitate to splash you this time, with a straight face. Just one yank from his arm sent tons of water your way.
Mingyu could only smirk as you wiped your face, at a loss for words. Mingyu chuckled upon seeing your reaction and moved lightly through the water to you, leaving a soft kiss on your forehead.
He laughed, feeling somewhat pitiful toward you, who was still frozen over the fact that you got caught trying to cheat and lost. Mingyu just kept laughing while patting your head.
“My members did that too many times that I'm immune to that trick.”

a/n: I'm going to start watching Police University because I've loved Jinyoung ever since I found B1A4's A Lie in 2018. + The Dino fic is getting out of hand- I think it'll reach 10-12k words; I'll have to split it into 3 parts with 4k words each if it does reach 12k... + This one was low-key inspired by TTT water sports ep.

(from beyond the sea)
Prompt: "I like the way your hand fits in mine."
Pairing: Lee Seokmin x female reader
Genre: fluff, slight angst, slow burn, mermaid!au, kinda magical overall(?), probably set in the same universe as Ponyo.
6.03k words
Warnings: some alcohol consumption (everyone is of legal age), swearing, the reader has a phobia of the ocean, allusions to drowning (nothing explicitly mentioned).
Beyond the sea, within the sea—both are places you have no desire to explore. You have lived nearly your whole life with an intense fear of the ocean, yet something about it keeps haunting you.
Alternatively, in which you are afraid of the ocean, yet Seokmin shows you that you no longer have to live in fear.
A/N: I don't have much to say about this little passion project; perhaps that Seokmin is one of my main bias wreckers in Seventeen. In my notes prior to determining a pairing for this fic, I had written: "All three have this kind of magical wonder to them that I want to capture," about my possible choices of a protagonist (you’ll find out the other two contenders later on). I hope I have captured this feeling. Furthermore, there are some loose ends for a possible part two if I feel the desire to continue this au. Enjoy!
The lyrics (bolded) are from Somewhere Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin.
Tumblr media
•• Somewhere beyond the sea,
You've never liked the ocean: the seemingly endless dark depths and rushing currents that could pull you below. No, rephrasing your thoughts—you are afraid of the ocean. Sure, it can be pretty to look at on a calm and sunny summer day, and sure, the sea breeze admittedly feels pleasant brushing through your hair and clothes on occasion, but you refuse to give in to its temptation, to even go near it if you can help it.
Somewhere waiting for me,
It can be lonely sometimes, being the only one of your classmates growing up who refused to go swimming on field trips to the beach nearing the end of the semester. You often found yourself alone and listening to the fun they would be having in the shallow tides: a shimmering, azure blue. You learned to bring things to accompany you when your friends would prefer to enjoy their time swimming. A book and a beach towel resting on the silky sands was often your set-up. Not much has changed since then.
My lover stands on golden sands,
You've become better over the years at handling your fear. When before, you used to hesitate to even step foot onto the sand, now you have become comfortable with the squishing feeling between your toes. However, boats are another story. Your mom once took you on a cruise when you were a child, and honestly, you enjoyed it. Well, for the most part, only until the last night of the tour. Frankly, that's the trip that made you develop your fear of the ocean in the first place. Since then, you've refused to step foot on any watercraft. It's a bit ironic, really. You've grown up on a decently-sized island apart from the mainland—the only way to get across is by a ferry. You're not sure if you'll ever be able to regain your trust with the water.
And watches the ships that go sailin'.
"I dare you to go skinny-dipping."
"Oh, hell no. That's a hard pass."
"Really, Gyu? You think she'd do that?"
"You're gross, dude."
"What? Do you want me to go instead?"
"Not really. None of us need to see that."
Being friends with Mingyu, Jungkook, and Hansol—your best friend—is a recipe for no dull moments. You four have a tradition; you'd all take a trip to the Jeon family cabin near the island's peninsula as a way to start your summers. You've all been going for the past few years since your final year of high school, continuing the tradition into your college years.
It's where you find yourselves now, splayed out in drunken messes (some more than others) on the semi-private beach. To your right, there's a small fire pit in the center of your beach chairs. A cold drink is in your left hand to counter the heat in your cheeks from the flames.
"Sorry, (Y/N), I'm an idiot," Mingyu admits after finally realizing what he'd dared you to do. "You don't have to go into the water."
"I wasn't planning on it, but thanks," you reply and take a sip of your drink.
The four of you stare at the fire beginning to diminish. Orange embers glow in the ashes.
Hansol swirls the remains of his beer bottle around. "Why do I suddenly want to go swimming now?"
"Dude, no. It's nearly midnight, and you're drunk," Mingyu retorts, "None of that is a good combination."
The younger boy is about to quip back, but suddenly, a loud splash interrupts his thoughts, heard near the row of rocks separating this property from the next.
The tallest boy stands to try to see the source of the noise, but it's much too dark. "Okay, you're definitely not going swimming now. I don't want to be responsible for your death."
The splashing continues. It isn't as loud as the first time, but it's more constant as if something is struggling by the rocks.
"I'll go check it out," Jungkook puts his bottle down and slips on his sandals, already heading closer to the water.
"Not by yourself, you're not," Hansol is quick to jump to his feet and follow the elder.
You remain seated, and luckily, Mingyu remains at your side too.
Somewhere beyond the sea,
Seokmin adores the ocean. Well, he sort of has to since it's been his home for nearly nine decades. He loved playing in the currents with his brothers when he was younger—and now—appreciating how the colour of the water changes the closer he gets to the surface. The ocean makes him feel free. It's like he can go anywhere or see anything. Seokmin can't say he's ever felt love before first-handed, it's not a feeling he can define, but he considers the ocean to be the closest thing that he loves.
She's there watching for me,
He has breached the surface before. It isn't a forbidden action to his people, but it is to be taken carefully; however, there are different rules when you're one of the sons of the merking. There are countless cautionary tales of merfolk who have been spotted by sailors, more on what happens when they get too close to shore. Merpeople are supposed to live for centuries as they slowly age, but most of those tales abruptly cut their lives short. Seokmin feels like the only one who isn't afraid of those stories and wants to see for himself what would happen if he met a land-dweller. He's optimistic that they're not as cruel as the fables portray them to be.
If I could fly like birds on high,
Seokmin is a graceful swimmer. With decades of practice, it's a given talent. He used to struggle when maneuvering through the waves, especially when compared to his two brothers. Yet, with great perseverance and will, Seokmin trained himself to become better. Much stronger and significantly more elegant—he can now soar with ease through the water, quite speedily, too. In his younger days—what would be equivalent to teenagehood in humans—Seokmin would travel for days across the wide ocean, simply feeding his desire to explore.
Then straight to her arms—
Being a part of the royal family means Seokmin is eligible for arranged marriages. Soonyoung, his elder brother coming up on a century old, is already engaged to a beautiful mermaid, Tzuyu; the boy suspects he's next as the second-eldest in their family. Seokmin knows it's to benefit his kingdom, but he also knows that the chance of being in line for the throne is incredibly slim as the second brother. All he wants is to find someone he loves as much as he loves the ocean.
I'd go sailing.
"No way," Hansol whispers, breaking the silence between him and Jungkook as they've reached the rocky barrier.
Sure enough, the splashing sound is caused by distress. A boy, looking to be around Hansol's age, is stuck between a few large rocks that have fallen from the wall. It's shallow enough that his torso remains above the surface, but the position looks painful, nonetheless, with one of his arms twisted beneath the collapsed rocks.
"Here," Hansol approaches the stranger slowly, "we can help you."
The boy has a fearful look in his eyes as the human approaches. It's only when Hansol has rolled the legs of his joggers up and is wading into the shallows that he notices the lack of legs the panicking boy has, or rather, the glimmering tail he has instead.
He shrugs off the unusual sight and tries to move the rock, but it's much too large for Hansol to budge by himself, staggering slightly on the uneven ground. He calls Jungkook over to aid him, and the two of them together are able to lift the stone out of the way, freeing the trapped boy.
The stranger slips away and back into the depths before anyone could say anything.
"You saw him too, right?" Hansol asks his friend, pointing out to the vast sea and trying to find some evidence of what was next to him moments ago.
"Yeah," Jungkook is nearly speechless, drying his hands on his shirt.
"He didn't even say thank you."
"I fucked up. I fucked up big time!" The youngest brother rants to his siblings upon arriving back to his home safely.
"Alright, Chan, it's time to calm down now-"
"No, Soon, you don't understand! This time was different." Chan continues to ramble, "I would have really been in danger if I was stuck there until morning. The rising sun would suffocate me, no doubt. My precious sixty-one years would be down the drain in an instant!"
“So dramatic,” the eldest chirps. "It's a good thing that those humans found you when they did."
Soonyoung has heard enough of Chan's stories about always venturing off to the shore. He's somewhat jealous. Lately, the eldest has had to spend more time planning for his wedding and preparing to become the next-in-line for the throne. He wishes he could join his brother on an adventure like they used to a couple of decades back.
"Please, Seok, you'll listen to me then, won't you? You're a hopeless romantic."
Seokmin isn't sure if he should be offended by his brother's comment.
"And what if I am?" he asks with his hands fidgeting in his lap. "What does that have to do with this?"
"You're the one who enjoyed exploring the most years ago. I know you've done your share of people-watching before." Chan ponders, then adds more quietly, "Well, and also, the boy who first approached me was kind of cute."
"Oho, does our Channie have a little crush on a human?"
"Great, now you're listening, hyung."
Seokmin sits back and listens to his brothers playfully bantering. He admires them both fondly, sometimes wishing he could be as responsible as Soonyoung, or as free-spirited as Chan. Instead, Seokmin becomes more reserved around his siblings, despite not considering himself to be shy. But the three are well-balanced when they're together.
Noisy, but well-balanced.
"Why do I feel like I need to see him again?" Chan asks Seokmin as they're lying in their shared bedroom. Their older brother has a room to himself, being the next-in-line.
"Maybe you really do like him," Seokmin suggests, not quite knowing what to say. He's never before been enamoured by a particular human, nor any merfolk for that matter. "You're making me curious now. It's been a while since I've seen the surface," he sighs, struggling to remember what dry sand looks like.
"Then you should come with me!" Chan doesn't hesitate to suggest, "I can't guarantee he'll still be there, but it's worth a shot. Right?"
Seokmin hums in thought. As much as he would like to comply with his brother's request, part of him knows how they're not supposed to venture to the surface so freely. Especially with it being so close to Soonyoung's wedding, nothing detrimental should happen to them before the upcoming celebration.
"Besides, I should probably return... this... whatever this is."
Seokmin eyes the strange-looking object with a puzzled expression.
"You know, Chan, it's not very nice to steal things that aren't yours."
"Are you sure you checked your suitcase?" you ponder, trying to rack your brain of other locations the missing sandal could have gone. "What about by the hose in the back? Maybe you left it there after rinsing the sand off them."
"No, I've gone through my bags twice already, and I don't think I bothered with the hose last night," Hansol replies. "I have a feeling they're on the beach somewhere. Although, I can't remember if I walked up the path in bare feet or not."
"You were quite drunk, Han."
"Oh, hush. We're on vacation, aren't we?" the boy lifted his eyebrows at the question. "I'm allowed to get drunk. Anyways, will you come with me down to the beach? It's not like my shoe could have walked away on its own," he snickers at his joke, "it's bound to show up somewhere."
You try to ignore the rising uneasiness in your chest. "Do you really need me to go with you?"
"Two sets of eyes are better than one, (Y/N). And I promise I won't let anything bad happen to you. You don't even have to step foot into the water or even go close to it, for that matter."
You sigh and reluctantly agree, slipping on your own pair of sandals for the short walk down to the beach. You know Hansol would have asked one of the other boys to venture with him near the water, but Jungkook and Mingyu had left to get more groceries (and drinks) for tonight, so you were the only option.
"Where did you find the other shoe?" you ask as you scan the area around the fire pit. "Isn't it strange that you only lost one?"
"It was outside the front door. But as you said, (Y/N), I was quite drunk last night."
You giggle at your friend's comment, adding, "Maybe a bird flew off with it this morning," and continue to scan the sand.
"Wait, now that I think of it, I don't think I had that other shoe after we went to the rocks," Hansol considers and begins to walk to the familiar barrier.
The short wall looks smaller in the daylight, but you know the rocks are unstable despite their compact appearance.
You cautiously follow the boy as he ventures closer to the tide.
"You and Kook never did mention what you saw last night over here," you state, trying to create conversation to distract you from being so close to the water.
"Didn't we?" Hansol tries to recall, "I guess we didn't. Maybe because we knew that you and Gyu wouldn't believe us."
"Believe what?"
"Believe-"
You and Hansol turn the corner at the first large rock.
"-that."
Your stomach drops at the sight. There are two boys in the shallows; one is casually sitting and looking around, while the other is floating on the surface.
His rosy, fish-like tail is hard to miss.
"Oh, thank goodness!" Chan exclaims upon seeing the familiar figure, now sitting upright like his brother. "I believe this is yours."
The mermaid holds up Hansol's lost slipper while sporting a beaming smile on his face.
You're in shock. You've read about mythical creatures when you were a child, as most kids do at that age, but never have you thought that their existence is real. Let alone that you would ever come face-to-face with one.
"Thank you," Hansol mutters and carefully approaches the younger male.
Chan introduces himself along with his brother, and Hansol does the same with himself and you.
But you're beginning to panic. The feeling is bubbling up in your throat, and you don't want to break down. So instead, you excuse yourself and run back up the pathway to the cabin.
You miss the way the older merman's eyes remain on your figure as you retreat away.
It's far beyond a star,
Seokmin feels strange. It's not the first time he's seen a human-being that close, let alone speak with one, but there was something odd about your behaviour; the unusual feeling seems to stem from seeing you.
"Did you see the way she looked at us?" the second-eldest speaks, recalling your tense expression.
It's near beyond the moon,
"Why? Do you think she's pretty? That would be convenient because I still think Hansol is pretty. I thought he was charming in the moonlight, but now, I can say he's even prettier in the sunshine," Chan hums, repeating the boy's name for the nth time upon their return home. "I never knew humans could be so lovely."
I know beyond a doubt,
"No," Seokmin begins, "I mean, yes, she was pretty too, but she looked afraid of us. Of... me. Didn't she?" He pauses. "I've never had someone be afraid of me before."
Chan glances at his brother's concerned expression. "She was probably just surprised, Seok. Maybe she hasn't seen a merperson in-person before."
"Maybe," Seokmin mumbles, not entirely convinced.
The merman's peculiar feelings about you only fester as the days pass by. When Chan would return to that same beach almost daily in the hopes of seeing Hansol again, Seokmin would remain at his home.
He is strangely impacted by you. Not that you even said a word to Seokmin that day, but the way you reacted threw him off.
He longs to know why you ran away.
My heart will lead me there soon.
Not that you needed it, but you now have yet another reason to avoid the ocean.
Hansol ends up journeying down to the beach every time he sees the familiar crimson tail splashing in the shallows from the large cabin window facing the ocean. The other two boys have begun teasing their younger friend about his new fishy pal.
You have tried to express your concern about Chan to Hansol, explaining that he may be dangerous, but your friend has only dismissed your worries and encouraged you that Chan isn't a threat.
"He's a fun guy to talk to. You're welcome to join me down on the beach sometime, (Y/N)," Hansol says as he slips his notorious pair of sandals on. "Actually, Chan has been asking about you lately. If you're doing alright."
You look up from your bowl of cereal with a confused expression. "I don't think I even spoke a word to Chan. Why would he be asking about me?"
Hansol shrugs. "Apparently, one of his brothers has been worried about you. I'm assuming that's why he keeps asking, but that's all I know."
You remain puzzled in your seat at the kitchen table as Hansol closes the front door behind him, wandering down the familiar rocky path towards the water.
"Is (Y/N) coming?" Chan's posture perks up at the sight of the boy approaching.
He shrugs his head, "I don't think so. I'm sure you know by now how apprehensive she can be. Stubborn, too." Hansol takes a seat in the sand. His shoes are off quickly once again as he dips his legs into the water, the gentle waves lapping up to his knees.
Seokmin frowns. He's been accompanying Chan on his near-daily visits in the hopes of seeing you again. With all of the stories Hansol has been telling about the human world and his friends, Seokmin has convinced himself that he wants to properly meet you.
Just to make sure she's doing alright, he tells himself. There's no other reason.
Seokmin takes pride in helping people. As the middle child, he'd often take it upon himself to sort out his brothers' issues, especially on the rare occasion he found them arguing. A mood maker, his mother told him in his youth when she'd noticed the way he always seemed to strive to help others feel better. So when Hansol briefly mentioned your fear of the sea, there's nothing that the boy decides he wants more than to help you see that the ocean isn't something to fear.
However, it is a difficult task to accomplish when you wouldn't even venture down to the beach anymore.
There's part of Seokmin that feels guilty about your recent reluctance. From what Hansol has said, it seems like you were making gradual progress in becoming comfortable near the water. In fact, you hadn't always been afraid of the ocean. Yet, it all seemed to backfire the moment your eyes landed on him and Chan.
It makes Seokmin feel even more responsible for your fear.
It's raining today, a stark contrast to the previous perfect blue-sky, sunny weather that you've all been experiencing for the past week on your vacation.
You're the first one up this morning, making your way quietly down the stairs and into the kitchen to make some coffee.
You examine the horizon as the aromatic drink brews. The rain is only spitting down now, but you have a feeling it will pick up later with larger clouds slowly rolling in. It looks like the sun is trying to peek out from behind, although unsuccessful in its attempt.
You pour yourself a cup of coffee when enough fills the pot, hearing the sizzle onto the element when you impatiently remove the container as it continues to drip.
Making your way to the dining table nearby, you take a seat in front of the large window, holding your mug between your hands.
The coffee is too hot to drink right now.
Your mind begins to wander as you wait.
(Y/N), age seven.
You wake to a faint ringing sound.
"Mom?"
No response.
You shuffle to the edge of the bed to turn on the lamp. As your eyes adjust to the sudden brightness, you're met only with an empty room.
"Mom?" you say louder, just to once again, unsurprisingly, be met with nothing.
Maybe she's still at the party on the deck, you think to yourself. That would explain the sound. Maybe it's from the music.
You slip out from beneath the duvet and make your way to the cabin door.
You take a deep breath, not knowing why you're so nervous, and open the door.
There's no music. It's an alarm.
You suddenly feel the ship lurch to the side, throwing you off balance and into the side of the doorway.
"Mom!" you cry out, for someone, anyone.
You don't want to be alone.
Tears are prickling beneath your eyes, and immediately, panic rises to your throat.
"Are you (Y/N)?"
A young male rushes down the hallway in your direction.
You nod your head in response, not finding your words.
"Your mom said you'd be down here, come on. She's already up in the rendezvous spot." His nametag says Seungcheol.
You accept his outstretched hand and follow him as he hurries down the corridor back the way he came.
The boat sways again, but Seungcheol stands his ground, keeping you steady on your feet too.
"What's happening?" your voice crackles.
Seungcheol continues to guide you through the interior of the ship. "There was an unexpected storm suddenly. Captain didn't even see it on our radars, it came out of nowhere. We're taking precautions and gathering everyone in the lounge while he works on getting us to shore."
The two of you make it above the cabins where the wind and rain are pelting down stronger than you've ever seen before. You're having a hard time keeping your balance on the rocking boat, your hand slowly slipping out of Seungcheol's grasp.
A giant wave hits the side of the ship, effectively removing your small hand from Seuncheol's as you're thrown to the side.
You scream as the wave seems to drag you away and pulls you off the edge of the ship.
You hear someone else yell; maybe it's your mother, maybe it's Seungcheol, but before you know it, you are doused in the cold ocean.
The instant your body falls into the depths, you're frozen, petrified, unable to move. You try to struggle your way to the surface, but your clothes weigh you down, only making you sink further below.
Your lungs burn. Trapped in the darkness, you can barely see the moonlight above anymore.
You succumb to your watery grave, eyes closed and arms wrapped around your small figure in a final effort to gain warmth.
Suddenly, you are hit by a feeling of serenity like your mother is cradling you once again. You lean into the tender touch and begin to drift away into unconsciousness.
She belongs to the sea.
You seem to hallucinate a raspy voice hiss out the strange remark.
And then you're gone.
Each time you see the familiar grey, gloomy clouds in the atmosphere brings you back to that one fateful day from your childhood.
You know something else happened to you after you fell into the water, but you can't for the life of you recall what.
You know you somehow made it back to the shore safely in one piece. Could it have been that kind staff member who collected you from your room? Or perhaps your mother who dove in after seeing you fall overboard?
You've kept that day to yourself; the only one who knows the full story is Hansol. Not even Jungkook nor Mingyu are aware of all the details; they only know the gist of the origins of your fear of the ocean.
"Whatcha thinking about?"
Hansol's voice brings you back to reality. He's come from the kitchen and is currently standing next to you. Now brought back to your senses, you feel the slight sting from the hot cup of coffee resting between your palms.
"Nothing," you mutter out, removing your hands from the ceramic. You keep your gaze out the window at the hazy horizon; the tide seems to be rising with the weather getting progressively worse. "Are you seeing Chan today?"
"No," he answers, taking a sip from his cup. "Not that I know of, at least. I doubt he'll come if it's raining like this."
The wind looks like it's beginning to pick up. You can hear it howling on the other side of the windows.
"Right, of course."
The boy takes a seat across from you. "Are you sure you're doing okay?" he pushes, "You know you don't have to stay here for the full two weeks with us, right?"
"I know," you reply, "I've just been feeling more anxious recently, but I'm not entirely sure why." You take a sip of your coffee, burning the tip of your tongue slightly. "But I'll be okay."
Hansol's concern for you doesn't waver despite your words or the smile you’re presenting.
"Some storm, huh?" Mingyu's voice is heard from the staircase as he treks down to the main floor. His hair is still damp from his shower.
Hansol makes a noise of acknowledgement and takes another sip of his coffee.
Mingyu prepares a cup of coffee for himself. "Do you think the water will rise all the way up to the deck?"
You involuntary freeze at the thought.
"No, it shouldn't," Hansol says confidently.
And it doesn't, but it does come close. As the rain continues to pour, the entirety of the rocky path becomes submerged beneath the saltwater.
The sound of the storm keeps you awake as you lie in bed that night, picking at a loose thread on the duvet cover. You think you can feel the cabin sway with the heavy wind, but you blame it on your imagination.
She belongs to the sea.
You blame your imagination for the husky voice you hear too.
The sea.
The shutter on your bedroom window flies open; it's certainly not your imagination this time. You immediately stand up and make your way to the adjacent wall to close it, only to see just how high the tide has risen since you've retreated to bed.
Now you must be dreaming.
The sea level appears to be just below your window. Being on the upper floor of the cabin, that's more than concerning.
"(Y/N)?"
You back away from the window at the sound of your name spoken from the other side of it.
A vaguely familiar mop of damp brown hair appears outside your windowsill.
"Seokmin?" You squint your eyes at the face you see in the moonlight. Panic laces your voice, "What the hell is happening?"
Yeah, you really must be dreaming.
The merman reaches his arm through the threshold of your window with his hand open for you to take.
"Do you trust me?"
Every part of you screams no. No! You've lived your whole life in fear of the ocean and what resides within it. Taking this creature's hand would contradict your entirety.
"Please," he adds.
You feel yourself being drawn towards him, one foot after another taking you closer until your hand brushes against his. His fingertips are pruned, a sensation slightly rough against your smooth ones.
When he closes his hand around yours, you hear the rain abruptly stop.
Everything becomes silent, like the drops of water have stopped with time.
"It's okay," Seokmin whispers, warmly smiling at you.
Before you know it, his lips connect with your forehead.
And you suddenly remember that night you fell into the abyss.
No, you think you're gone, but the burning sensation in your lungs is alleviated.
You open your eyes once more to find your small body enveloped by another being. It has a tail: a long, dark violet tail extending beneath you. Your fear hasn't left you completely, but the way you're cradled so carefully eases you.
"It's okay," a gentle voice whispers, causing you to look up to meet a pair of brown eyes and a warm smile. "You're safe."
"What's happening?" you hear your voice ask for the second time that day, unsure of how you're able to speak beneath the water.
"Your father wants you home," is the boy's response, "but I've tried to tell him it's not your time yet."
"My... father?"
You can't picture a face to the name you speak. Each time you've asked your mother about him, she's only said how he was a wonderful man. Was.
"Yes, (Y/N). Sorry about the storm. He gets emotional when thinking of you." One of the merman's hands supports the back of your head to his chest as he dashes through the water. "It's because he misses you."
"Are we going to see him now?"
"No, not yet. One day I'll find you again, and we will see him. Together."
Before you know it, your heads break through to the surface where the weather is much clearer than before. Your rescuer moves slowly towards the beach near the dock, continuing his hold on you until your feet can touch the ground.
You cough up some of the water that infiltrated your lungs before asking, "May I know your name?"
The merman smiles once more, the apples of his wet cheeks reflecting the moonlight. "You will, one day, little jellyfish."
Your eyes open only to find you still stood by your window with a familiar set of arms around you.
You take note of his purple tail extending below.
"You," you whisper, taking a step back from the windowsill to get a proper look at the boy residing on the other side, "We've met before."
Seokmin chuckles at your realization, "Yes, many years ago."
"You saved me."
"Kind of," he ponders. "You wouldn't have drowned; your father wouldn't have let that happen. I only made sure you wouldn't sink to the bottom of the ocean."
"Right, my father." The title still sounds alien from your mouth. You gesture to the flooded outside, "Did he do this too?"
Seokmin sheepishly scratches the nape of his neck, "Word may have gotten around that you were visiting the oceanside. You know how excitable Chan can get."
You smile at the idea of the youngest royal brother bragging about seeing you. "If my father's a merman, then why am I human?"
"Who said your father's a merperson?" Seokmin counters, "He's less of a merman and more of a sorcerer who resides within the waves."
"No shit."
The boy giggles at your remark.
"But if I technically come from the sea, then why have I been so afraid of it?"
"Are you still afraid of it now, jellyfish?"
You open your mouth, about to say your habitual response, but only to find yourself lacking one life-long phobia.
"No," you furrow your eyebrows.
"It was a spell I placed on you, back when you were a child," Seokmin fiddles with your hand; his is now dry. "It was to prevent you from returning when you weren't ready."
"Am I ready now?"
"My goodness, so many questions."
But Seokmin takes the time to answer them all for you.
You pull up a chair to the window as he remains in the raised tide.
That night, you learn that you're less human than you originally thought. You're not a merperson like Seokmin and his brothers are, but you do similarly come from the ocean.
Your father had unexpectedly met your mother one summer's day, the two falling in love faster than either party had expected. You weren't necessarily planned, but the two were ecstatic, nevertheless. Your father had to return back to the depths—his home—leaving your mother alone for the rest of her pregnancy. Yet, after she had you, she was significantly less lonely. She seemed to have the whole ocean supporting her, despite her lover unable to return to the surface.
When you were an infant, you were drawn to the water. Perhaps you could hear your father calling out to you for you to return home at sea with him, where he thought you belonged more-so than on land.
Seokmin had placed the spell on you to give you the opportunity for a normal youth on the surface. He recalled the way he so strongly loved being free of stress and confinement before his royal responsibilities became more prevalent and only wished the same for you.
Practicing magic under your father's teaching made Seokmin create a spell strong enough to last for over a decade.
He refrained from telling your father what he'd done that night when he found you. He knew how powerful the man was; a tsunami or hurricane could have easily been a product of his emotions.
Although now, the spell has worn off. Once more, you find yourself inexplicably drawn to the water and arguably even-more-so to the boy with his hands encased in yours.
"Will I get to meet him one day?" your eyes examine the way Seokmin's thumb grazes across your knuckles, tracing every crest and trough on your skin.
"Yes," he says, "though only when the tides lower again. I don't want him flooding the entire island out of happiness."
You hum out an "Okay" and catch the beginnings of the rising sun in the distance, illuminating Seokmin's already-glowing silhouette.
We'll meet beyond the shore,
"(Y/N), could I try something?"
Seokmin's ears are tinted a pretty pink as he examines your form sitting in the shallow water.
You shift your attention from feeling the silky sand beneath the waves lightly lapping against your ankles and to the merman sitting next to you. His hair is slowly beginning to dry from being in the summer sunshine.
We'll kiss just as before,
Seokmin takes your hand tenderly and brings it to his lips. It's a gentle touch, but the act sends a flurry of butterflies straight into your chest. The boy smiles brightly, his eyes slightly crinkling at the corners, and laces his fingers between yours.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea,
"I like the way your hand fits in mine, jellyfish."
Your eyes meet Seokmin's, who are trained on the pair of your intertwined hands.
"I like it too," you admit, smiling as his gaze lifts and meets yours.
He slowly leans in.
And never again I'll go sailing. ••
