An antique Georgian era mourning ring dedicated to the memory of WILL'M BENFORD ESQ. OB. 17 MAR 1805 AET 60. Very decorative and of fine quality, the squared face holds a central plaited lock of his hair framed by plump wild Pearls, the wearing of jewellery such as this a tangible link to those who have passed. All is very typical of its time and a super piece for any collection. Born in 1745, as reported in the Gentleman's Magazine, 'Obituary with Anecdotes of Remarkable Persons' he died at his home in James Street, Westminster in 1805. He was buried on 23rd March at Bunhill Fields burial ground, City Road Islington in London. On this day, 203 years ago, Charlotte Brontë was born. After bestowing the enduring 'Jane Eyre' (1847) upon the world, the English author died in Yorkshire in 1855. And now, perhaps her final gift has been shared with us. Airing on the @BBC just days ago, @BBCAntiquesRoadshow presented a beautiful little ring, fittingly discovered in an attic (shout out to the madwoman!). Inscribed with her name and the date of her death, the ring opens up to reveal a delicate, miniature plait of hair. The Roadshow's antique jewellery expert, @GeoffreyMunn, and the head curator of the @BrontëParsonageMuseum, @AnnPDinsdale, (shout out to that tweet!) are both certain of the item's validity. Unlike the macabre, momento mori imagery fashionable in the Georgian period, Victorian's redesigned mourning rings into commemorative pieces. And, with the rise of the middle class, hair was a common addition in place of expensive black gems and jewels. In the show, which you can catch on iPlayer, Munn comments that "it echoes a bracelet that Charlotte had made of hair of her 2 sisters, which she wore with an amethyst clasp for devotion.” Apparently, Dinsdale hopes to acquire the ring for the museum collection, whilst the anonymous woman who currently owns it, has promised a celebratory pet rabbit to her daughter. A striking vintage conversion most likely of meaningful family pieces, a Georgian lace pin has been mounted upon a custom bezel and utilising a 1920's period Platinum lined 22ct Gold wedding band to create a fabulous statement ring! The centre locket is framed by teeny, tiny Seed Pearls, and they by a border of ten hand cut purple Pastes (imitating Amethysts), all in superb antique condition given their 200 plus years!
