First we have the Lightning Morph

A simple inoffensive morph that's a favorite amongst people due to being a simplistic shakeup of the usual Pikachu look whilst having no health problems or issues brought upon by the different markings. They're just a zappy guy! There was a brief craze when some Lightning morphs had extended cheek patterns as though lightning was sparking from their cheeks, a favourite being zigzags under the eyes affectionately known as the "Ash Morph" due to the similar shape.

Next we have the Nanab/Banana Morph!

An adorable morph with colors similar to that of the Nanab beery including the browning spots older Nanabs that need using tend to gain. Another loved morph due to lack of health concerns and how different it looks.

And from the Nanab/Banana Morph comes the Peeled Nanab Morph

Characterised by having a paler stomach often times a whole pale front this morph is just a slight variation of the Nanab Morph with the pale stomachs like that of the actual Nanab fruit. There is debate over what counts as a 'true' version of this morph some argue it needs to be a whole body stripe others just the stomach, it's up to interpretation really but for a while this Morph whipped up a frenzy due to their cute pale bellies resulting in them selling for more than their original morph counterpart.

The Sweethearts Morph

A more problematic morph, assumably bred from the banned deluxe shiny morph (the shiny status of this morph is heavily debated as is the legality due to the Pokémon apparent inability to evolve and noted shortened tail that causes issue with absorbing electricity but I digress), and an albino morph making a pink tones Pikachu from the Deluxe Shinys darker more red coat and the Albinos white. They briefly caused a frenzy amongst people with heart shaped patterns having ones selling for much more, however they were quickly banned from being bred and being used in competitions and battles due to health issues. Functionally they are somewhat albino, suffering from many of the similar health conditions they're susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke and require sun protection measures, they often exhaust quickly and can't hold a steady charge and often have eyesight issues. Thus the ones that have been bred must only be kept as companions and not used competitively in any manner.

Lastly the Clown Morph! (hoax)

A small breeder posted on their social media the creation of the Clown Morph a Spinda like Pikachu that quickly became desired. At about midday the same breeder posted that the morph was in fact an April Fools with a video of their very patient Pikachu partner having the Pokémon paint washed off of them. Many people caused uproar about the deceit claiming the breeder used unsafe paints or that they took money from them for a Clown Morph and used it to boost their business but the claims were quickly disproven as it was just some people very angry and not taking being pranked very well. Most saw the funny side of this hoax.

not sorry but i do not buy the fact that fancy mice live to a maximum of three years but wild mice live to be at least five. especially when there have been fancy mice that have reached 6years. the oldest pet mouse was almost ten years old.

the short lifespan of fancy mice just tells me that improper care is normalized to such a degree that your mouse dying 2-4 years before theyre supposed to is considered standard. that expecting them to live longer than that is unrealistic.

Hey, is a Bengal/Savannah Cat cross a bad idea? These seem like a horrible idea to me but admittedly I don't know much about cat breeds

ohhh yeah, it's a bad idea.

so, a lot of this is pretty anecdotal and also based on ONE bad breeder. A few years back, I was very, VERY lucky enough to foster several savannah x bengal crosses. One of the first things that struck me about the cats was how fucked up their reproductive systems are. My vets NEVER had so much trouble spaying cats. Even the youngest cat had a uterus full of cysts, and that's weird as fuck in a 4 month old kitten. Some of it COULD just be piss poor breeding and shit genetics, but I can't help but shake the feeling that maybe crossing three separate species into a single animal could fuck something up reproductively.

Tempe was the worst off. She ended up having a closed pyometra (infected uterus). She was 9 months old or something like that. Her surgery was a success, thankfully, but she required a SECOND one due to an infected stump that managed to hide somewhere. Apparently her uterus and ovaries were just a tangled mess.

Behaviorally, they were all a little off. Again, these were animals that came from a profoundly abusive/neglectful situation so some of it could be blamed on that. I don't want to go into details because it's deeply upsetting. Their former owners were charged and found guilty of animal abuse.

But I want to talk about the cats more.

Here's a cat bed. It's one of those like vaguely croissant shaped beds, with a little hidey hole inside. You can see an extra cat-installed hole. That wasn't an original feature. Tempe had a toy mouse, see, and it made little squeaky sounds. It was UNDER the bed.

She decided the most direct route was to go THROUGH the bed. She made this hole and started pulling out the stuffing in around three minutes.

This wasn't an isolated event. None of them were allowed typical cat toys, because they would be torn apart pretty quickly. They were provided with dog toys instead (even my own Saia is like this).

All of the hybrids tended to just... Go. They never really stopped to think about things. They just went from off to on in an instant. Most had resource guarding issues to work through as well (this isn't an uncommon savannah trait; Saia's missed most of it, unless she's stolen some chicken).

This extended to other animals, tbh. A dog got into the yard once. The cats were all safe in their enclosed catios, but you can imagine that they were all pretty upset. Most of the savannah x bengals were ready to throw down, though. There was just zero hesitation. Tempe once caught a bird through the bars of her catio.

Again, a lot of this could be blamed on really bad genetics, poor socialization background, and a slew of other things. But I can't help but think that maybe, just maybe, mixing three species into one is a Bad Idea.

My setup today at the reptile expo!

I will definitely say, the Sunday shows are not as good as the Saturday ones. We'll probably be skipping Sunday ones from now on. I did hand out a lot of business cards and brochures today, though, and made a good impression on a lot of people. I even had one person drag her family to my booth after she handled a mouse, and we were able to work out trading in the mice her niece bought from someone else for some of mine instead.

I KNOW we changed some minds today, because there were several people who made disgusted faces until I started talking and they meandered close enough to see someone holding a calm, sweet mouse. Absolutely LOVE hearing "I never knew a mouse could be like this." I had one pest-control guy stop by and explain that he kills mice for a living, but he wanted to hold a live one that was calm and he kept quietly saying to himself "it's so different/it's so nice." I had so many people ask me "how much do you handle them to get them this tame" and be surprised the answer is "I do not handle them, this temperament is bred into their DNA." I had a lady who just... broke, standing there with a mouse laying in her hands calm as could be, and she said very quietly "do little kids hold these?" Just mystified.

I've learned now to say that they won't jump or bite because they are bred for show and have to be able to sit in a judge's hand without jumping or biting, and for some reason the judge part of this just clicks the info for people? Like I always say no they won't jump or bite, but they don't always believe me... but I say a judge has to be able to hold it? Every single person was like "oh" and just relaxed about it. Suddenly it's just like: Ah, Yes, this is a Professional Mouse.

Someone from my old job showed up, and didn't recognize me, though I recognized them. When I mentioned it, they said they'd left, too, they only "lasted" two months. I said I was there twelve years and they were like HOW and it's like my dude (neutral), I entered a fugue state in 2010 and quit the job 12 years later I guess. They ended up taking 2 mice home.

At any rate, I had fun as always. We have another one Saturday, so I'm hoping to sell the few that didn't sell today, and to bring a few more that weren't quiiiiite ready to go today. I wish the tricolors would get their act together and start breeding better, because I would LOVE to offer more of those. The siamese are working on it, which is great because those ALSO sell fast. But alas, I cannot make the mice go any faster than they want to go.

I found my sweet Dorian passed away today. He was only a year old. I wish I knew what happened… He did have some papillomas growing and african soft furs can have such awful life expectancies due to poor breeding. A friend of mine had purchased soft furs from the same breeder, first time using this breeder for both of us, and also had one pass away really unexpectedly. So I don’t know, it could be genetic, or just bad luck, or growths causing problems.

As you can see he had growths, likely papillomas growing from his eyelids and obstructing his vision. We had been discussing about getting them removed but now he’s gone… :(

He had been originally purchased alongside his brother Phrygian to be buddies with my elderly male mouse, Trowel after his soft fur friends passed. After Trowel passed away, they moved in with my female mice. When Paprika and Yarrow started bullying Rya, I split her and Dorian off so she could live out the remainder of her life peacefully. He took immensely good and gentle care of her and did not want to let me take her body when she finally passed after a long and full life. He then moved in with Clavicle, one of my foster mice, and was very sweet to him even when Clavicle was unsure about wanting a buddy. But in the end they bonded and nested together.

The capacity that soft furs have for such tender love and care towards each other and towards mice will always astound me. No matter who he was living with, Dorian always treated them with kindness. He always shared his nests, his wheel, his snacks. If a mouse stole a treat from him, he just went and found another one for himself.

His brother Phrygian still lives on with my female mice. I hope that Dorian is reunited with Rya & Trowel now ❤️ I will miss him.

still cant believe i got a calico mouse from a fucking petstore meanwhile the closest calico mouse breeder is LI TERALLY on the other side of the country in California.
