Gwendoline Christie joins mudlarks of the Thames as a detectorist
When Gwendoline Christie played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, she wielded an elaborate steel sword. As Captain Phasma in the Star Wars franchise, she was armed with an enormous gun. In real life, however, she prefers to wield a metal detector.
The West Sussex-born actress has revealed that she enjoys mudlarking, a pastime dating back centuries in which people scavenge for treasures on a riverbank when the tide is out. Modern mudlarkers use metal detectors to try to find hidden artefacts.
“There’s something secretly thrilling about unearthing slivers of artefacts, tokens of another age, further reaching through time to touch a connection with our ancestors,” Christie said.

The British Museum has unveiled astonishing discoveries in its 2022 Portable Antiquities Scheme Annual Report, proving once again that the UK is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders!
From the muddy banks of the Thames to the rolling fields of Staffordshire, remarkable artifacts continue to emerge, thanks to the dedication of mud larkers and metal detectorists alike.

These ceramic reproduction pieces are modeled after Victorian examples. The game has many rules based on region and culture, but basic rules can be found online.

I prefer to play by throwing one in the air and catching it on the back of the hand, then adding another for each subsequent toss to increase difficulty.
Want to get your hands on a set? They will be available Nov 7th at 6pm ET.

What was the River Thames like?
When I drive through it, you mean? Gross.
Imagine the rubbish of literally 2000 years. It's the landfill site of history down there. You got your Roman trash. Dark ages trash. Medieval trash. Norman Trash. Tudor trash. Victorian trash. World War trash. Modern trash. Postmodern trash. And rats.
It's a good day when Crowley remembers to roll up the windows.

me at the beach by myself appearing depressed, sultry and dejected (I am actually looking down because I collect rocks and right now I see all these cool rocks and am filled with quiet joy at the beauty of nature)

Here’s a new collection of some recent creek finds!
There’s an adorably tiny little porcelain lid from an early 1900s doll’s dish set, a clock from an old figurine, a rock with a shockingly perfect “2” on it (I thought it was a piece of pottery at first because of that, haha), some pieces of tumbled glass with lovely patterns and lettering on them including that one piece with a beautiful cursive script “D” debossed on it, a plastic man, some pretty bits of bonfire glass including that little ruby red piece, a chunk of an old aqua and green cat’s eye marble, loads of awesome fossils, and more!
