Tumblr media
hello friends and welcome to the horseimagebarn weekly interaction recap where i respond to comments tags asks and et cetera in one large post every friday
Tumblr media Tumblr media
though it may be disheartening news i must inform you there is no other imagebarn to my knowledge and i have no plans to expand mine enterprise as i am made humble and joyous by my current state and managing multiple imagebarns would most likely cause me to become overwhelmed and then lose passion for the craft i dedicate myself to so for now horseimagebarn will remain the only barn under my careful curatorship
Tumblr media
i shall do so in good time all miniature horses will be tagged with the tag small so you can properly filter it when navigating the stables
Tumblr media
i am gladdened to see this my friend as this blog was born out of my desire to have a horse image for every single situation my friends presented me with for example taking a shower or going on a trip or eating pizza or other similar things though as the situations grew more complex and my collection grew i decided i must share these images with the public i am glad you have gotten a similar use out of the images
Tumblr media
i am inclined to disagree with you though i am aware taste is subjective i am a huge fan of the mcnuggets and the biscuits yummy
Tumblr media
yes yes yes i urge every one of my followers and even the casual viewer to turn their attentions to the lovely miniature horse clothing craftspeople over at myminiandthemoon as they have provided me many wonderful horse images and they are also local to my area
Tumblr media
hello friend i assure you that is not the strangest tag i have received upon my posts and i paid you no mind nor judgement as i am aware many employ unusual tags to save images for completely unrelated reasons
Tumblr media
shoutout your brother

I'm in my mid-30s and my ever-growing love for history has spurred me to consider a career change into the field. I'd love to work in a museum or archive in a research or curatorship role (rather than as an academic), and I live somewhere where I could take time out to get a masters degree.
From your experience - is a change like this feasible? Is there work available? Will a late (re)start be a hindrance to getting a foot in? Is a degree worth it, or should I aim to get volunteer experience instead? Or am I better off sticking with my current decent office job and treating historical research as a passion/free-time activity instead?
This is a great question, and I wanted to give you as good an answer as possible so I outsourced to a friend and former colleague who worked in collections. This is what she had to say: *follow the Emerging Museum Professional FB page. There is lots of advice there
*I don’t think it’s ever too late to follow your dreams. You’re in your mid-30s, not 99! (Although even then I’d say go for it!)
* I’d recommend volunteering at a place you would be interested in working in. It’ll give you a better sense whether or not this is actually a field you’d like to get into, or just a fun hobby. Both answers are totally ok
* I’m a fan of experience over degrees, but it really depends on where you would want to work. Many positions require a masters degree, but not all. If you are in a small town, or more rural area, it would be easier to talk your way into a position than if you are in a big city
* if you’ve loved history for a long time, try to articulate how skills you have in your hobby or through your office jobs relate to the museum field. I used to manage cafes and found that many of those skills transitioned into collections management (inventory, databasing, customer interactions, etc.)
Best of luck! ---
I will echo her point that it's definitely not too late and if it's something you're truly passionate about it's worth at least considering. Obviously it's not always that simple - giving up a stable, decent job is a risk etc., so while I'm generally not a fan of volunteer work, it might be worth trying it just to see if it's something you would like as much as you think. I will also agree with her point about experience over degrees. I've never been to college at all myself, which is a huge rarity in this field, and when I got my first museum job my only work experience was running a salad bar at a restaurant. But my supervisor told me, years after the fact, that part of why she gave me an interview was that in my cover letter I made an analogy comparing running a salad bar to being a historic interpreter: something about how being in the middle of the dining room meant the bar and by extension myself were always on display, and how that would mean I'd be more comfortable with thousands of guests seeing me in period clothing etc. Granted, interpreting is very much about talking and making analogies to help guests understand the past, so it's a bit different from the behind the scenes work in how those skills translate, and how demonstrating an ability to talk is directly related to the work itself, but still. I hope this is helpful, and I hope that if you do decide to pursue this it works out how you hope! Thanks for the question!

Introduction
Hello Hello! I'm Elm, but you can call me El, any pronouns except she/her are fine with me. Formerly @heartsfor58 before that blog got deactivated, no idea why. Autism + ADHD + Anxiety, please try to use tone tags with me! My special interest is ice hockey, my other biggest interests/hyperfixations are pokemon & ancient history (specifically the preservation of ancient history/ethical museum curatorship/archival history). If you have questions/comments about those things please talk to me, I love talking about them with people!
@sewaddlewaddle is my pokemon specific sideblog, it's an in character pokemon rp blog so kinda blanket unreality warning for that. @marnersmitches is my hockey specific sideblog, where i'll liveblog and talk about hockey the most! i recommend blocking #leafs lb if you don't want my ridiculous liveblogging habits infecting your dash. Will probably add more later!

I love your ‘Uno Reverse’ series! Photographs are a such a scarce but important resource for a dress historian, and this series really puts things into perspective. Thanks for doing this work!
Do you have any advice for someone like me who wants to become a dress conservator/historian? I’m a tailor’s apprentice but I’m having a lot of trouble deciding how to continue my education.
Glad you're enjoying it :)
Oooh, big question. Prepare for a lot of words:
Dress history is a weird field to get into. If you want to be a historian, unless you're independently wealthy and can just spend all your time researching and writing, the usual professions are curatorship and professorship. There aren't a lot of either position available - many settle for historical societies, small colleges, etc - and neither make much in the way of money. Definitely consider your options very thoroughly! (Though if you're a tailor's apprentice you probably already know that, lol.)
Conservation is - from my POV - a better choice in the long run, because while institutions can stop hiring people to teach or do research, any place with a collection has to keep conserving it. Conservators also make more money, no question.
I went to a program that specialized generalized in both (FIT). Like you, I was unsure of what I wanted, and the flexibility was attractive. Other programs tend to specialize in one or the other, and now that I've been through FIT's program, I understand exactly why. There was no way to give us both curricula in their entirety in the two years we had, and I ended up feeling like I barely learned anything. However, I was coming from having completed a long conservation internship; I had studied up pretty thoroughly on fashion history before I attended the program at all; and I had already been through a separate MA previously, so I already had research and writing skills on a higher level than FIT even cares about. Given that caveat.. if I were to go back in time with this info, I would attend a different program that specialized in one or the other and therefore provided more comprehensive skills.
If you're interested in conservation, my biggest piece of advice would be to do an internship, preferably with a firm that specializes in it or at a big museum with a dedicated department. That will give you experience and familiarity like nothing else and also help you to understand whether it's the right field for you. But internships like that can be pretty competitive, so the second best option is to volunteer at a local historical society or house museum. Almost all of them are constantly on the lookout for volunteers, especially ones interested in preservation and the more scientific side of collections management. You won't be paid, unfortunately, but the upside is that almost any small institution will happily take helpers because they're desperate and cash-strapped. Reading through online publications like the National Park Service's Conserve-O-Gram is a great way to start building knowledge if nobody there is equipped to give it to you. (Every institution I've worked at has had a copy on hand for reference, lol.)
I volunteered for a small house museum years back and literally on day one they threw me at the clothing collection and told me to dress mannequins and pack textiles. I had very little idea what I was doing, but it was a great learning experience - and one that you're never going to get at a museum internship because they're so much more careful about their objects and access. (Pros and cons, but hey.)
+ As far as I know, you will need an MA to be hired to most conservation positions, but there's no reason you can't get started in the field without it first and make sure that's the degree you want/need. In terms of curatorship/professorship, an MA will get you into small local colleges but for anything larger you'll need a PhD, and that's a big commitment. You have to really like academia to get one of those suckers! As far as I'm aware, there are no stipended MA programs and only one PhD program (Bard) in this specific field that pays, so again, you have to be fiscally comfortable (or willing to go into debt and work two jobs) to get an advanced degree in the subject. It's a vicious cycle that keeps a lot of people out, and institutions can afford to keep it up because it's so competitive. +
All that said, historic sewing is a fantastic way to get into the field because knowledge of construction and technique gives you an excellent understanding of historic dress, and hand sewing techniques are essential for conservation. You're already on the right track!
If you want any book recs, off of the top of my head Refashioning and Redress and The Care and Display of Historic Clothing are two great, readable volumes.
Let me know if you have any other questions, but hopefully this helps!

Hello! Just wanted to say how cool this blog is. I didn't know this entire whimsygothic thing had a name until I found your blog! It's an aesthetic that goes hand in hand with the styles I like to see put together (my room is styled in this aesthetic for about two years but in white) :) Here's a fun fact! Historically speaking, I see in whimsygothic some influences from of course the OG (medieval) gothic, pre-raphaelites, art nouveau, and much much further: some sprinkles of 90s! These are all aesthetics I love, so keep up this good curatorship of images! Cheers from a whimsy enthusiast :)
P.S.: Just realized my blog has the same color scheme as yours, so if you stumble across mine please know it is just a coincidence heheh (burgundy and beige are two colors that go amazingly well together!)
Hey, thank you so much! Whimsigoth is such a beautiful style, clothing and interior wise.
I think many people who follow my blog assume my room is like the pictures I post, but my walls are pale white complemented by whimsigoth & gothic decorations. I'll do a kind of room tour sometime!
And don’t worry about the color scheme, i do not own those colors and they are in fact beautiful!

[For that talk to you meme thingy] what exactly do you want to do with your museum degree? Conservation/preservation, curator, archivist or smth else? I know there's more I just don't want to list them.
Honestly what I want more than anything is to get my dirty grubby gay little hands on any piece of art I can but I’ll settle for curatorship or collections work. All of it is so cool I want to dip my toes in a little bit of everything tbh and fucking around like this will probably lead to me finding out and getting my phd in art history against my better judgment lmao

Zoo au characters, and if you're feeling adventurous and achieving, drama between them, please? Normally I'd want to hear about Kylo (always), but I'm struck by Hux being pedantic about beetles. Also what's Poe doing? My cousins both work at a zoo so I'd love to see what they think about all this. They're nerds too.
So animal management at the zoo is split into 2 main sections with smaller within that. Thoe are LVI & Birds, and then mammals. LVI is reptiles, amphibs, inverts, etc and stands for lower vertebrate and invertebrates. This is the first time I'm writing some of this down so there may be some changes to what i've said before. Notably I put the KoR as maintenance but not anymore. It's long so rest under the cut
Kylo: Nepotism baby got an easy zoo internship because at the time his uncle was the assistant curator of mammals and his mother headed the education department. Some people hate him because of this. Zookeeping is not an easy industry to get into and he just walked in like he was owed the world. His internship was on the mammal section, focusing directly under Luke on the large carnivores. An incredibly boring section as everyone knows the small carnivores are where the interesting things happen. All big cats have going for them is that they're big. When he finished his placement, a role was created for him as the new primary keeper of the big cats. He turned it down. He instead walked straight into a job on the LVI & Birds section under curator Snoke. Turns out he had been spending his days off and his break times with Snoke, learning aviculture, and had become enamored with birds. Luke was not happy. Hux was not happy either as Snoke is currently without an assistant curator and it seems like he's grooming Kylo for the position even though Hux has been working for him for years. With him on the bird section (There's a lot of birds. Snoke likes his birds) he has some of the knights of ren. There's more of them in spring and summer to help man the bird walkthroughs and deal with the increased workload bird sections have then. Basically there's a strange overlap between the bird keeper section and animal training, even though the birds under snoke receive little to no training (Snoke doesn't deem it necessary for husbandry). Kylo himself goes over to animal training a few times a week, but not to train any animals, and always during his lunch breaks. Ren: Head of animal training/the show. He's kinda off on his own not under the jurisdiction of either curatorship, but works with them. Mostly enjoys the birds of prey and flying those. He is never seen without his falconer glove even when he's training ducks. Flirts with everyone and anyone. Once tried to bag both Luke and Leia at the same time. Luke seemed keen but Leia slapped him. It's ok though, he had Han and Luke when Leia and he were 'on a break'. He also had that big eyed son of hers. Multiple times. The kid's clingy but he's good for getting Rens dick wet. Luke: When Kylo started his internship he was the assistant curator/senior keeper of large carnivores. Not long after the internship was finished, Luke was promoted to curator of mammals as his predecessor (Yoda) retired. He holds resentment for Kylo ruining his big plans for him, where he would be curator and in a few years his nephew the assistant curator under him. Kylo had a knack for the job and Luke thought he was genuinely interested, just for Kylo to walk right over to the other curators section without any prior warning (As far as he knew.. Selective vision, everyone else saw him helping out on the birds whenever he wasn't with the cats) Luke I have working with big cats because I really think big cat keepers are boring. Not as bad as elephant keepers, but still up there with the boring and the big ego. Luke is just incredibly boring to me. It literally won't let me post more than this which is ??? as i see other people with stupid long posts and not even a cut like all the time zzz. I'll do more in a subsequent post.

Oh my gosh!! I was just looking at your blog the other day! (I go through my following every so often to see who's inactive, sometimes I can't bring myself to unfollow despite people being gone for years) Glad to have you back and hope life is treating you well! Happy to see you're still researching! I know a lot of people get disenchanted and sad about the direction the world is going :( I know I did. I originally wanted to go into lake science but it was such a depressing field I switched majors. Have a good day!!
I have been on an incredible journey since I started this tumblr. I was a master's student, just starting out. Since then, I have finished my PhD and several postdocs, and landed a curatorship at a national natural history museum, and now I have my own group. It has been a hell of a whirlwind!
That is not to say I am not also disenchanted, of course. Academia is worse than ever, twitter is currently in the midst of collapsing, and these problems are utterly insignificant in the face of the global environmental and climate disaster. I totally understand why people would want to move away from depressing fields to something where they can feel they're having a more positive impact, so kudos. Especially right now, I appreciate the decision to take care of your brain. But I hope it has not cost you your interest and love for wetlands, because they are wonderful and magical places, and they need all the help they can get.

Promotion and curatorship
The role of the curator is to oversee the organisation and installation of art works for exhibition purposes as well as having an understanding of the works and the conceptual attributes.
Good communication skills is necessary as working as part of a team may be required. The ability to use initiative and work independently is also a key role. The curator not only hosts but looks after the bussiness arrangements, planning layouts, and collections. They are also responsible for the catalogue of work and promotional materials.
Through out the research one of the main points of a successful exhibit is the audience, listing email addresses,  VIP lists , word of mouth and getting involved with other societies etc.
The poster ,leaflets or flyers I’ve noticed need to be clear and give only the information needed eg what? Where? When? Any other information will make posters busy and may mean people just dismiss it . Leaflets or catalogues are always a good way to promote during events and can be taken away as memorabilia.
Audience participation is a great way to encourage people to attend and fully experience an event/exhibit is to have demonstrations and work shops to allow spectators to be involved with the process of art aslo allowing the artists to get maximum benefit from taking part in the exhibit.
Understanding the hosting requirements for exhibitions.
In a meet with GI director and curator today it was really interesting that neither of them had continued with being the artist creating work and had both decided that they were more interested in researching and planning events. It was really nice to hear that a more caring approach has been taken into consideration when it comes to not the piece of work but establishing a caring supportive role between the director and artist.
Another great point was that of the relationship between the space and the art work.
It’s important that the work and the venue/ space work in balance and harmony .
There are sites that you can build free gallery portfolio , these sometimes end up being more hassle than they are worth however it’s a good way to get started , keeping it simple and not having too many sites etc means that you are more likely to be consistent with communication and self promotional information.
Evaluation 2
Fortunately for this year we have a team of students together with experienced working artist tutors to promote our work, tasks have been shared out to take responsibility for aspects such as Instagram take over, acting director and proof readers.
Self promotional materials
Cards to take away
Stickers and headed paper for invoices, packing etc.
Tumblr media
Installation space and floor plan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keeping up to date .
We used padlet and chat group with word/ excel documents.
It’s a good idea to keep a record of all emails and planning updates.
It’s a good idea to contact galleries, museums and art establishments and offer to volunteer whenever possible. Signing up to newsletters helps to keep me updated with opportunities , events online and artist articles.
Funding opportunities arose and are in process of being accepted, during this research there have been multiple calls for residency and funding opportunities. This became one of my roles within the group , securing a venue for future events in collaboration with cumbernauld alternative initiative Mugshack.  Unfortunately the main contact is unable to attend the show however it may be possible to create a virtual viewing event. This became popular with galleries and events during the covid lowdowns and can still be seen to be a good way to visit exhibitions worldwide.
The downside of social media.
It's important not to fall into the selfie pothole of promoting through sites such as Instagram. Too often the artist can be caught up in posting selfies, family snaps and other personal views etc. In order to be taken seriously as an artist its a better option to keep the artist portfolio for art and promotional purposes only. Personally I have found I can be a fan of work but when too much personal information and images are posted the art gets lost and the artist then becomes a personality to like or dislike. This can bring with it difficulties when attracting clients ,bidding for exhibits and residency opportunities.
If your going to be a brand be your own brand . Qr codes are increasingly popular however personally I find them easy to dismiss and ignore.
Proposal Discussion
My work will require a plain white background wall, here I will be hoping to display the current creative work of black and white photographs and creative writing piece.
As the piece involves narrative concepts the positioning of each will be in order of story boards . Each board will tell a story
Final considerations for opening
Error! Filename not specified.
Installation and venue considerations.
Fire and safety planning locating fire exits and accessibility. ♿ always prepare for wheelchair users.
Rota to be confirmed.
Always be open to collaborators suggestions.
Use of cables , lighting and equipment safety planning , maintenance and availability must be considered and preplanned before set up . Plinths , tables and wall space or panels and the ease of navigation will be important when looking at placement and juxtaposition of works. Personal artist statements and name plates will be required for each participant of installation.

I was reminded of my Atlantis AU yesterday, and had a Thought for you:
I made the twins the linguists/archeologists in the AU (because I'm *not* making them the magical natives, yikes - the de Rolos can be the Atlantians with their magical Residuum) and was wondering what sort of digs/history/languages you'd personally see the twins poking at, either individually or together? Assuming a context where this is a career path for them at all.
Go forth and nerd out!
See. Archaeology is what I studied at uni. And at the end of the day that's a really hard question to answer. If we're going with the Atlantis film they're probably American which means they're either doing one kind of colonialism on Native sites or Another Kind of Colonialism on other sites, right? Even if they're Metis or another Native-non-Native mixed ancestry it's still.... weird and complicated.
If you were to put them in a more modern setting, however, I think Vex would absolutely love rescue digs, where the goal is to save everything of a site one can before it gets destroyed by development. She'd probably campaign like hell to preserve what she can - probably alongside Keyleth, probably how they met - and do incredibly effective, thorough work in preserving what she can (and then writing absolutely scathing reports regarding the people making the rescue dig necessary). I think she'd also really get into rescue digs that are more ecologically driven - like sites exposed or threatened by changing weather and rising sea levels, such as Seahenge - and have a whale of a time figuring out and writing about the circumstances which prompted the site being built... and any parallels to it's exposure. A common theory behind the building of the Seahenges was a worshipful attempt by local groups to forestall the sea-level rising.
Vax meanwhile... some of you may wanna yell at me for this, but I think Vax would have two possibilities - one is obvious, one less so. The second is that I think he'd enjoy aquatic sites, diving for them, the tension of balancing boyancy and air and avoiding disturbing the local animals and ecosystem. I think also that the inherent danger of wreck diving would appeal to him.
The first obvious one is... I think he'd enjoy the museum curatorship end of things and especially in-museum efforts to safely repatriate artefacts - making sure that the country they're going to is stable, that the museum knows how to take care of the artefacts - and getting the artefacts back with their people. I also think he'd enjoy setting up displays with artefacts from everywhere, be they permanently loaned artefacts or artefacts they've got an agreement to keep, to help encourage visitors to the museum to see the humanity and personhood of these other cultures and want to visit their museums too.
