Organic molecules on Mars

Simple Research Summary:
NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars has found examples of organic minerals
Organic minerals aren’t linked directly to life itself, but are “building blocks of life”.
Geologists believe that:
There could have been several periods of deposition, leading to many different complex organic molecules
There could have been chemical alteration of minerals to create the molecules
Not definitive proof of life, but potentially shows life-linked minerals/chemicals exist on the planet.

Haven't seen anything about Ingenuity on tumblr yet, so I guess I'll make a post about it

Ingenuity (sometimes called Ginny) was an companion craft to Perseverance, one of the rovers currently on Mars. As opposed to any of the past rovers, however, Ingenuity was a rotorcraft intended to fly above Mars' surface.
After landing on Mars in February of 2021 and completing its first flight on April 19th, 2021, Ingenuity became the first aircraft to fly on another planet. Its original goal was only 5 flights, but it well surpassed that number, logging 72 flights with over two hours of in-air time.
On January 18th, 2024, Ingenuity lost contact with Perseverance midway through a flight, and a few days later, NASA had confirmation that the rotors were damaged, leaving Ingenuity incapable of flight.
So long, Ingenuity. You did so much <3

So do y'all know about Curiosity's wheels? They have these cool hole patterns!

The holes are ostensibly for tracking wheel slippage. The pattern is stamped in the Martian sand, and by taking a picture of the tracks and measuring the distance between the repeating hole marks, you can tell how much the wheels are slipping.
But the pattern isn't arbitrary! Curiosity (along with many many other NASA missions) was built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory - or "JPL". While JPL is entirely federally funded and almost exclusively works on NASA missions, it's technically operated by Caltech, not NASA. When JPL was assembling Curiosity, they added some "JPL" decals to it along with the cool "Curiosity" label on the arm.

Well, NASA HQ found out and got mad. "You can't put those JPL stickers all over our rover!" they said, and made JPL scrape them all off.
JPL reluctantly complied, but definitely got the last laugh. No decals allowed? Well fine - the holes in Curiosity's wheels say "JPL" in Morse code. So every few feet, the name of the real creator of the rover is stamped into the surface of Mars!

The Ingenuity Rover's Helicopter, nicknamed Ginny, is broken and alone

"In this most recent photo of Ingenuity, the dual-rotor 'copter can be seen motionless on a sandy dune in the background, as a barren, rocky Mars landscape fills the foreground.
The photo was taken on Feb. 4, 2024, at 1:05 p.m. local mean solar time, a little over two weeks since it suffered its mission-ending damage.

Ingenuity suffered damage to its rotors during a flight on Jan. 18 as it made a landing on a featureless, "bland" patch of sandy Martian landscape. The helicopter usually makes use of landscape features such as rocks to help it navigate, but its 72nd flight found the drone without visual cues.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is still analyzing the damage to Ingenuity's blades, but regardless of what JPL finds, the helicopter's mission has officially come to an end now that it's no longer capable of flight.
Ingenuity landed alongside its robotic companion, the Perseverance rover, on Feb. 18, 2021. When it took to the Martian skies in April 2021, Ingenuity made history by conducting the first flight of a powered aircraft on another planet.
The Ingenuity-Perseverance duo has been exploring an area known as Jezero Crater ever since, discovering signs of ancient bodies of water on the Red Planet that may have once harbored life billions of years ago. Ingenuity served as a scout for Perseverance, identifying areas of interest for the rover to explore.
In recent weeks as NASA and JPL have been coming to terms with the end of Ingenuity's groundbreaking mission, agency leaders have praised the helicopter and the teams behind it.
'We couldn't be prouder or happier with how our little baby has done,' said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity Project Manager at JPL, during a livestreamed tribute to the helicopter on Jan. 31. 'It's been the mission of a lifetime for all of us. And I wanted to say thank you to all of the people here that gave their weekends, their late nights. All the engineers, the aerodynamic scientists, the technicians who hand-crafted this aircraft.'
Tiffany Morgan, NASA's Mars Exploration Program Deputy Director, added that Ingenuity leaves behind a legacy that could pave the way for future aerial missions on other worlds.

NASA is already developing another drone destined for another world, the nuclear-powered Dragonfly, to someday explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan. The agency expects Dragonfly to launch no earlier than 2028."

Apps
One area of the tech world that continues to advance and affect our lives is apps (short for applications). With the advent of smartphones, apps are way more than just games or photo editing. So if you haven’t made any resolutions yet, resolve to check out these trending apps:
AXEL – Files move or stream from one device straight to another. No stops along the way and no uploading. It removes the middlemen.
Circle of 6 – When talking about personal safety, this is a tool you might consider having. It is designed to quickly and discreetly get help in dangerous situations. Pre-written messages are sent to designated recipients by simply tapping twice, GPS location included.
Zombies, Run! – Exercise as a game. And zombies. It’s a zombie exercise game. If nothing else motivates you, maybe this will.
Communication
Another area where technology thrives is in the area of communications. We use various tools to communicate with people, and we use these tools a lot! Consider all the ways we convey a message in today’s world.
Telephone – Since the first “hello” traveled across a wire, telephones have kept us connected. Wires? Who needs wires today?
Email –  Email is still relevant today. Beyond the spam, businesses rely on email to communicate with their employees and patrons. In addition, emails keep us connected to loved ones who don’t quite love the latest technologies.
Video – Video meetings have revolutionized how we stay connected. We keep in touch with family, attend school, speak to our doctors, and conduct business, all from a distance.
Text – Whether it’s a quick, short message, or a long conversation, text messages easily keep us connected.
Letter – Yes. People still write letters. Whether typed or written with old-fashioned technology like pen and paper, the letter still gets a message across.
Website – This technology produces a variety of messages. It’s a vehicle for ideas, news, and business.
Social media – Many different applications offer social media platforms to create, share and connect.

More than just a shimmering stone, opal — which is rich in water — has now been found in Mars' Gale Crater by NASA's Curiosity Rover.
Martian water ice is abundant at the poles but not so much at the equator (where Gale Crater is located). NASA's Curiosity Mars rover, which is currently exploring the crater, had previously beamed back data from its DAN (Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons) (opens in new tab) spectrometer, which was then analyzed by a team of researchers. In both older and newer Curiosity images, they noticed fracture halos, rings of light-colored sediment, that stood out because of their color; further tests proved that the light rock was actually opal.
Because opal is predominately composed of water and silica, the presence of this mineral could mean that there was once enough water there to possibly make the depths of these cracks habitable. Furthermore, the opal currently on Mars may one day be able to be harvested for the water stored inside, offering a source of water for any crewed missions to the Red Planet.
