Might I ask your opinions on Steve/Nat/Bucky as a throuple?

Not my thing because amongst other reasons I'm honestly just not that interested in Bucky -- I see the attraction and I know a lot of people who are very into him, but it's not a character type that does anything for me. I also feel like I've just been really overexposed to Bucky in fandom, both on his own and in various ship combinations, and am generally kind of burnt out on the character and ships thereof over the course of the last 13 years in and around MCU fandom. I don't have anything against the character on his own, I just basically see too much of him around. (As well as being here on the Tumblr/AO3 side of the fandom, I'm also in the pin-collecting and cosplay sides, and if you're anywhere around the Captain America and Black Widow segments of the fandom, there is just...a lot of Bucky. Which is understandable but kind of frustrating for me if I'm not there for that particular character.)

In general I also find that it's impossible to find any kind of BuckyNat (or combos thereof) that's MCU-based rather than comics-based, which means disregarding basically everything about Natasha's backstory and characterization from the MCU in order to transfer her comics backstory over to the MCU, which is a huge no-go for me these days. (This was a little more understandable back in 2012 when there just wasn't that much to go on, but it is 2024 now; in general I find most of the fic that stems from 2011-2016 to be near-unreadable for me these days which is actually incredibly frustrating, since until I started writing in it the MCU was my longest-running reading fandom even when I wasn't actually in the fandom. There are fics -- of various ships -- that I have been reading for ten plus years that I can't read anymore.) I realize I got seriously into the fandom after the Black Widow movie came out, but even before that you couldn't really transfer her comics backstory over to the MCU, with or without the Bucky relationship. I've also found, reading the ship on and off over the course of the past thirteen years (like I said, I've been here for a while), that very few authors are actually interested in the SteveNat of that particular threesome and it tends to slant towards being a combination of BuckyNat and SteveBucky rather than a true OT3. And I'm a SteveNat truther, so... *hands*

The short version of all that is that it doesn't do it for me, but I get why people like it.

Vigarde pushing all of the country's hopes and aspirations on his unprepared son was his mistake, sure, but...

Between Vigarde telling him to deal with Grado's fate alone because relying on Renais is impossible, and Vigarde/Father Mc Gregor/The World telling him not to free Satan to use his powers because Satan nearly destroyed the continent centuries ago, if Lyon had to pick one command to disobey, I suppose he could have picked the "I'm still going to ask for Renais' help" instead of "I'm going to use Fomortiis' powers".

Vigarde might have steered him in the wrong direction - Lyon already playing with Fomortiis' powers (to save a child! and then to predict tempests and save more lives!) was his own thing.

It's SS in a nutshell, good intentions alone cannot justify the worst means used to satisfy/reach them.

Lyon lamented and complained about his perceived weakness, feeling he would never compare to the twins nor would be the kind of ruler Grado will need to save itself... so he doomed Magvel, wanting to be the strong and kind person he wished to be.

I think this is the flashback where it's more or less spelled out :

Lyon: “Mm… My research isn’t complete yet, but there’s no mistaking the power the Sacred Stones contain. And the Stone of Grado seems especially responsive to my dark magic. I suppose it’s because it contains both sacred and demonic properties. Regardless, if I can just press my studies a little harder… Well, I think I might be able to use it to heal my father’s illness. If that works, there’s no telling how many other people I can help as well.” Eirika: “Do you think this is wise? The power contained within the stones is beyond our understanding… My father tells me that the stones possess a power not to be trifled with.” Lyon: “Uh-huh… Father MacGregor is also against it. That’s why they still won’t give me direct access to the Stone of Grado. For the time being, I’ve made do with the radiant energies surrounding it. They’re nothing compared to the raw power of the stone itself, but… If I can show Father MacGregor some real progress, perhaps one day…”

Lyon: “Thanks, both of you. Hearing those words from you means a lot to me. Actually–and this hasn’t been made public yet–but… I’ve already saved someone using the knowledge I’ve gleaned so far.” Ephraim: “You have?” Lyon: “Uh-huh… A while back, a fire ravaged Serafew, and a little girl got trapped in the flames. Her burns were terrible: not even healing staves were able to cure her injuries. But just a sliver of the stone’s power restored her life and healed her wounds. We saved that girl’s life, Ephraim! Oh, if you could have seen the tears of joy in her mother’s eyes!

Fado, Ismaire and I'm pretty sure Vigarde himself know it's not wise to triffle/use the SS powers... Father MacGregor is also against it, as the resident "holy man" around - and his words are important, since the Church of Magvel was founded after Latona, who fell herself (but managed to fend him off for some reason ???) to Fomortiis' possession! - but Lyon's reply is... Mockery? Or disinterest?

Father Mac Gregor wanted to prevent him from continuing on this path, and forbade him access to the Stone! But Lyon didn't care and still used what was... available, when he also knows the power he is using has demonic properties, and a will of its own!

Lyon's reasoning isn't "Father Mac Gregor is right maybe I should try to consider that I cannot "use" Fomortiis" but something like "maybe he doesn't believe me when I tell him this power can be used for good! I just have to continue working on it!" completely missing the point...

Or is he?

Sure, Lyon saved the Serafew child... but this hadn't made been public as of yet (2 years before the start of the game), like was this not enough to convince Father Mac Gregor that he could use those powers to do right and good things? Or Lyon himself realised he... "saved" someone who was already dead?

This flashback is even more interesting because we have this, the twins' failure :

Ephraim: “Using the Sacred Stones to study magic…” Lyon: “Ephraim, Eirika, what do you two think? Using the divine power of the Sacred Stones in this way… You don’t think it’s a very good idea, do you?” Ephraim: “…It’s just that I know nothing at all of magic. I would that there were some way I could help you, but I simply can’t. But, Lyon, I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked to help others. I know how much you want the power to make others happy. I know these things, and because I know you, I trust your intentions.” Lyon: “Ephraim…” Ephraim: “If you hope to use the power of the Sacred Stone for good, I trust you can. I’m behind you all the way.” Eirika: “I agree with Ephraim entirely. You spend every night in the library, studying cures for your father’s illness. The power of the Sacred Stones is too powerful to be used for personal gain. But you, Lyon… I think you’ll be fine. You’re the kindest person I know.”

It's a double failure on their part, firstly because they give empty reassurances to Lyon claiming to know him, how he wants to use this power because he has the right intentions, or how it's totally not used for his personal gains...

When part of Lyon's desire for power was to help people, sure, but also, to be worth someone in Ephraim and Eirika's eyes!

Secondly...

No, the power of the SS (especially the one housing Fomortiis!) cannot and should not be used, even for "good" or with "good intentions". There are lines that shouldn't be crossed, even if it means not being able to save people/not reach your dreams.

The Epilogue in Eirika's route is very explicit :

Eirika: “That would be nice… But first we must seal this away… This stone banished the Demon King. With such power… Do you suppose we could bring back Father and Lyon… That everyone who died in this dreadful war could be–“ Ephraim: “Eirika.” Eirika: “I know, I know. Such things would be– I cannot wish for such things. No matter how it hurts, or rather because it hurts, we must learn to accept sorrow. We must take it into our hearts and tame our grief…” Ephraim: “Eirika… Tell me, Sister… If Lyon were here with us, what do you think he would want?” Eirika: “What he would want?” Ephraim: “Yes. You see, I think I know. It was the reason for his studies. It’s why he wanted to know about the Sacred Stones–or rather the Fire Emblem. Let’s take Lyon’s dreams and fulfill them in his stead. We can do that, can’t we? Without relying on any mystic power?” Eirika: “You’re right, Brother, we can. Let us fulfill his dreams. As Lyon wanted, as we all want… So we may live in peace and joy.”

Sure this epilogue sort of sucks because Eirika has to be explained things by Eph out of anyone (when we know how he takes the news in his route!), but the point still stands, tempted with the power to achieve the impossible... the heroes refuse and accept to move forward and fulfill their dreams (make the impossible possible?) without relying on mystic powers, especially if it comes from Fomortiis himself!

They were out to dinner, celebrating a successful mission. Well, okay, really, they were all just starving after that fight and a single Chinese restaurant had somehow remained open. It was fate. Destiny. It would’ve been stupid to turn down their offer of a free “thank you” meal. Plus, it gave everyone time to just sit down and breathe for a minute or two.

Clint was in the middle of regaling everyone with stories from the circus, exaggerating only a little (who was going to tell on him?), making big, grand gestures with his hands, chopsticks almost jabbing Natasha in the eye a time or two. Partway through a(n entirely made-up) story involving popcorn, a horse, and a tightrope-walking bearded lady, a smaller hand slipped into one of his. He didn’t have to look to know who it belonged to—Wanda was the one seated directly to his right, after all.

He didn’t pause in his storytelling, didn’t stutter or even look over at her, just gave it a squeeze and continued on, dragging her hand along for the ride.

"Please, go with her if you like her so much better." Agatha's voice snaps out from behind you. "But don't stick around and belittle them for not being enough when they've tried everything under the sun to cater to your ridiculous wants."

"Agatha..." You trail off, uncertain of what you wanted to say, tears stinging at your eyes.

Nat only scoffs.

"I wouldn't even have considered going with Wanda in the first place if they could just follow the basic house rules."

You finally snap. "It's my fucking house!"

Agatha's steadying hand squeezes your shoulder.

"I think it's time you left, Romanoff. I'll be sure that your things are packed away and left by the front door nicely. It's not what you deserve, but they're better then you."

Natasha opens her mouth to speak, but you cut her off.

"I thought you were told to get out."

With Agatha's reassuring presence, you finally have found your ability to stand up for yourself.

"Oh, and Natasha?" You call out as her hand turns the front door's knob. "I did have sex with Agatha that night. And she's much better in bed then you are."

You hear Agatha sharply inhale in surprise.

She's well aware of your lie, but she doesn't say anything, and you can see out of the corner of your eye that she juts her head out proudly.

"Run along now, dear." She smiles viciously. "Your loss is my gain."

The door slams shut behind the redheaded woman.

Agatha turns to you and raises a brow.

"So when did you supposedly cheat with me, hm?" She hums.

Your face flushes.

"When I spent that week by your place." You mutter.

"Funny how I remember you firmly telling me to back off because you were taken."

You swallow, heat sparking in the pit of your stomach as you take in the look forming in Agatha's eyes.

"Well... If I supposedly had cheated anyways..." You dance around what you're thinking.

The smile Agatha gives you make your knees go weak, and you can't help how they try to buckle as she steps well into your personal space, her breath hot against the shell of your ear as she whispers, "let me make good on your own words. I promise you, I am most certainly better in bed then she ever was."

Your lips part gently.

"Take me." You beg.

Agatha is all too happy to oblige.

For the first time in a long time, she found herself in a deep enough sleep, that slight movements that would have woken her up, to be more on high alert than she had been. She had missed when his hand had been on her neck until it was too late, and that metal hand was gripping around her neck, jolting her awake. She only had enough time to grab for Bucky's wrist when he woke up, luckily.

She coughed a little, and sat up with her hand on her neck, looking at him and shaking her head with a bit of a labored breath. "You wouldn't have killed me." She reassured, it wouldn't have been the first time she had an attempt on her life in her sleep. "Come back to bed, lets talk about it. We can figure out a work around."

this is not the same but I’ve lately had a pattern of people commenting on my ship fic about everything /except/ the ship, which is not bad but not how I’d expect fanfic to go! so shaking hand emoji regarding odd patterns

I've had that happen before! It's very "what is happening" for sure. You just truly never know what people are going to take away from a fanfic. (I had a non-zero number of people read Backbone and say they skipped all the Kanan/Hera scenes -- I also had one who said they skipped everything but the Crucible flashbacks and then complained that the fic was too dark.)

Do you prefer the Broadway or Off-Broadway cast album of Great Comet?

DEFINITELY the Broadway one because denée Benton is The Natasha of my heart like I'm sorry but I'll take this opportunity to turn this into a denée Benton rant. The naturalness and artlessness and sincerity she imbues Natasha with is staggering and imo gets right at the heart of what her character is about but then her moments of dignity are so on point as well and her anger is Natasha & Sonya is like my favourite part of the entire performance!!! Phillipa soo is great but whenever I see or hear her performance it seems a little too sweet to me whereas denée Benton plays her with such earnest and powerful emotions... Ok denée Benton rant over I also love Josh grobans voice (Dave is a good Pierre in many respects and it's awesome to see him perform this role he clearly identifies with but his voice never felt right to me) and of course dust and ashes!! One of my favourite songs!!!! The only thing I hate is the removal of Natasha lost from the studio version it's my favourite Natasha solo and I love the music in it...

Which brings me to the conclusion which is that with great comet the bootleg will always have my heart a thousand times over either studio recording. The strength of the emotions just doesn't come across as well as when the singers can belt the notes out in a theatre and besides the audience reactions and crackly audio quality give it a certain vibe that suits this show well... I think I compared it to listening to an actual recording of a live vaudeville or cabaret show!! Also in the studio version you miss out on bits like the opening "NO!!" and stuff!! So yeah live recording all the way. I dearly wish they'd release an official one already
