Winter proved the student body of Welton wrong when they thought the school couldn't get any more dull. The cold can be cruel like that.

Just like the winter stripped the North of all life, Welton stripped it's students of all identity. In a place where boot licking is the norm and conformity is the goal—Y/N's only retreat was the 200 square foot box they called home for ten months of the year. The only place anyone in Welton was allowed to be themself.

That was exactly where Y/N and their roommate—Quinn—found themselves on a particularly cold Sunday morning.

Y/N sighed and looked from their homework over to Quinn, who had yet to get out of bed, "Do you know that guy that's like...scary good at latin? What's his name? Minks?"

"Hmm," Quinn hummed, wrapping the blanket closer to their body, "the ginger kid? Always hanging out with that tall dude?"

"Yeah, him," a pause and yet another sigh from Y/N, "I think I need a tutor if I want to keep an A this semester. I—"

Suddenly an envelope skidded under the door and across the floor. Rapid footsteps followed soon after and Y/N could hear a door slamming further down the wing.

Quinn rolled their eyes, "God. Not another one."

Y/N just shot them a look and picked up the envelope—one of many addressed to them and left unsigned.

"You wouldn't be rolling your eyes if you were the one with a secret admirer."

"You wouldn't be rolling your eyes if you were the one with a secret admirer mehmheh blah," Quinn mocked in a high tone, "Yeah. If they were for me, they'd be romantic. For you? Prepare to be murdered."

"Shut up."

Y/N opened the letter and dove in. Their heart was beating much faster than they would like to admit.

Apartment.Gallery

That gap between the door and the floor, a crack where crushed sun leaks in. This is what I see before entering Apartment Gallery. All I really remember about the stairwell is the muddy dark brown wood of everything, cut by hiatuses of off-white walls.

It’s an apartment but there isn’t any furniture. There are the paintings, and barely anything else to take in besides them. Two rooms with pictures: the living room and a small bedroom to the left of the kitchen. And in the kitchen there’s an orange slice keychain on a countertop.  People huddle in two’s and three’s, their bodies become one big eye, with their heads the iris and turning peripherally. Then at the end of the night, everyone is crosseyed and bowlegged. Always one eye on the painting, the other on your interlocutor.

The show. Two painters unite. Kevin Larmee and Vogel Morra, hung and organized by Blaise — Kevin’s son, the cartoonist — in Chicago’s upper Northside. Kevin Larmee paints people, docks, water, sunless sky (the Beginning)  and moonless sky (the End). And Morra paints people, flowers, vases, windows, fireplaces, chairs, and trees. Larmee and Morra’s paintings are joined by the grace and awkwardness needed to dance. Larmee favors blues and blacks, bruising the canvas as a necessary arrow of love. Morra: purples and pinks.

The opening is like this: a dotted line tracing a butterfly’s ditz through the sky.

It’s mostly Blaise’s friends here. They seep through the doorway, many of them seem to be meeting for the first time. Someone asks me what I do and I say I am an artist. It feels less embarrassing to say that here. I ask someone,  ‘Are you a painter?’ A mawkish ‘kind of’ comes out of her mouth. Some of them are grad students at the University of Chicago, members of a Javanese gamelan ensemble. Spotted: Ash H.G., a cartoonist with a forthcoming graphic novel called East District. And Katherine Dee, the writer and internet anthropologist. The show’s artists are missing. “They’re both mysterious, so — “ trails off Blaise.

Paintings are the alignment of constellations, the flipping of a lucky cigarette into the first spot in a pack, stubby toes on crushed velvet. The fracture is fifty words for snow. Dipping a brush in dreamless water, shaping its hair into a fine cone. A brush’s bristles can be tweezed easily from hogs, sables, minks, mongooses, horses, ponies, wolves, sheep, rabbits, goats, camels, and oxen. The bristles are bred for this, a descending column of Kundalini blockages. A brush is vestigial. We can paint with slices of clementine if we weather the juice.

Larmee’s pictures are cosmic in subject matter but not in scale. There is a tiny importance to them, like a single petal or a Beanie Baby. When I said Larmee painted people, I include angels in this category. A redheaded angel appears opposite his depiction of two figures in silhouette, where one is leading the other through a building being destroyed in a fire.

Morra’s paintings are predominated by portraiture. The figures are nearly expressionless and anhedonic. It becomes increasingly important to the viewer to determine if the scene painted is candid or posed. Argument for candid: the space surrounding the figures is inchoate, tohu-bohu Rastafari. Argument for posed: Everyone who poses for Morra instantly become an image. Morra’s people scrape by with very little definition: a dot that’s an eye, a line that’s a mustache. The figures are saved from facelessness. It’s not anonymity, it’s privacy.

There’s mackerel, rice, beer, an idiom of wine whose name I can’t recall. Stephen tells me the name of the wine and I ask ‘Is that a director?’

The sun’s setting, each ray in danger of falling off the central axis. Larmee’s paintings illuminated in ring-like formations, the sun contouring each painting like melted popsicle circumscribing a mouth. The paintings are all surface: there is no pretense given to stain. It’s a painting. The application of paint is thick, white light is pressed and squeezed out between figures or waves.

Morra lets more light in. There are passages of color above solid blocks of pigment. The subjects of Morra’s paintings are alone. This painter favors the margin. Men sit in corners or against walls, ever brooding. Only the trees feel collective—  as faceless, inconspicuous, upright weather vanes. The brushstrokes staccato across the picture plane, each tree having its own auric shield. A tree in the foreground, cooped in pinks. Morra’s paintings are all wall, retaining walls to be specific.

Rock-em sock-em puddles of grass indiscriminately line the bottom of Morra’s painting of trees. This is a terpene-lined pastoral. In the living room, Larmee’s dorky grisaille and oceanic ground respond in kind. The dharma of every picture is that each brushstroke precipitates on the surface of the canvas, foggy warm breath making opaque condensation drawings on the pane of the viewer’s mind.

People fall in and out of the apartment.

And there’s a declining population by 6:30. Conversation has given way to current events. I feel good, because I have talked to everyone there an adequate amount.

One last note: Larmee’s paintings are business-casual, Morra’s are a loosened necktie after a long day at the office. Morra’s paintings struggle to unmoor themselves, the untucked canvas looping around the picture plane like ice cream birthday cake frosting.

The opening’s over. Stragglers sit crosslegged on the floor or perch on the window sill. The sky is purple and blue allover, high noon finally celebrating its quinceañera. It’s getting late, people return to their lives. All we have left is a painting between us, a sick twisted jeremiad dedicated to autumn.

WorkofArt! Series: Part One - Storm In A Teacup: Bobby Goren x Reader

It’s the letters that ruin Bobby, seeing his name written in your haphazard scrawl. His fingertips trace over the indentations of the ink and he imagines you sitting at the table in that quaint little house writing them out.

I love you Bobby, I think it started that day at the Met, you had written. You scored your name on my heart, and I just haven’t been able to shake it since.

He underlines the words ‘Met’ ‘scored’ and then ‘heart’ before he re-reads the letter all over again. He’s been at this for hours, sifting through the letters they found addressed to him in a safe house up in Rochester. Eames thinks he’s torturing himself, that he’s searching for clues that aren’t there, but she doesn’t know you, not the way that he does.

This thing the two of you have, it may be unspoken but its no less real. He knows you would never have committed your feelings to paper, that you would never have left them for prying eyes to see. You would have known that they’d be admitted into evidence when you disappeared, you would have known that…

He pauses for a second before he tilts his head slightly to the right.

Oh…

Now he sees it.

He remembers how you teased him that day the two of you visited the Freud exhibition.

“You like to think about the art, where I like to feel it.”

He runs his fingers over the paper again, seeking out the deeper inflections of your pen, the places where you’ve exerted more pressure, where the ink is slightly darker. He jots down each of the letters until it spells out a word and then he moves on to the next piece of paper and then the next.

Storm In a Teacup, it reads.

To anybody else it would be nonsense but to him it means everything because he remembers walking alongside of you that day in the Met, your shoulder bumping against his as the two of you stopped in front of that painting.

It was the first in a series called ‘Timeless Teacups’ by an anonymous painter. He could see how captivated you were by it. The hues were vivid, blues overlapping to form the restless sea inside of hyper realistic teacup. The contrast against the softer paintwork should have been jarring but instead it was bewitching.

“What do you see when you look at it?” He’d asked you.

“Perfection.” You had told him.

You meant it, he could tell by the tone of your voice. He had known that you couldn’t vocalise what you felt in that moment, the same way that he couldn’t. It was too raw, too powerful.

When your hand sought out his, he hadn’t pulled away, instead he’d clasped it tightly because everything about that instance was perfect. He was standing in front of one of the Met’s most stunning pieces of artwork, holding the hand of the woman he loved.

It doesn’t take him long to track down the painting.

It’s been loaned to a small gallery in Ithica called ‘The Mink’

The drive takes him six hours. He heads up there alone because he knows the reason you disappeared, it’s the only thing that makes sense.

When he enters the gallery, he sees you sitting there upon the stark white bench they’ve placed in front of the painting, a cane resting alongside of you. A reminder of the reason you ended up in Rochester.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” He says as he sits down alongside of you, his palm coming to rest over yours. “The restlessness of the sea, the way it reflects off the porcelain.”

You smile and he can’t help but smile too because once again you’re both in the midst of another perfect moment, one filled with elation but marred with sadness too.

“I meant what I said in the letter.” You tell him as your fingers entwine with his. “I do love you, Bobby.”

“I know.” He tells you. “I know that’s also the reason you can’t come home.”

He knows that Nicole Wallace found you up at that safe house in Rochester. He sees the stark reminder of her violence every time he looks at you because you’re still gaunt, still weak from the neurotoxin she pricked you with on the steps of the courthouse. She hadn’t managed to administer the full dose, you’d pulled away at the last second, your attention turning to something that Carver had been saying as she’d moved in for the kill.

That had been the first time she’d tried to take your life, the next had been two days later while you recovered in the hospital. Her tenacity was why they had moved you to Rochester, to a safe house where you could recover without the threat of a sociopath hanging over you.

All that had changed when you had bumped into her at the diner you frequented for lunch.

We have something in common you and I… She had said when she slipped into the seat across from you. We're both in love the same man, we both want to give him our hearts.

Despite the damage she had done to you or perhaps because of it you had laughed in her face.

“You don’t know what love is.”

When she came for you a third time you'd vanished.

“I guess this is goodbye for a while.” He says, tilting his head towards you.

You look into those gorgeous brown eyes of his and you see everything that could have been. Rainy days curled up in his lap with a good book, hours spent seeking out the best Cannoli in New York and those nights, the ones you would have spent loving him until the sun rose and he would have laughed because time had gotten away from the two of you yet again.

“I love you.” He says quietly, his lips brushing over your cheek before he raises to his feet. “When this is all over, I’ll find you again.”

You turn your attention back to the painting, your eyes surveying the deluge of colour as you try to ignore the ache in your chest.

“I know.” You tell him. “That’s what I’m counting on.”

Also, we’re in the endgame, meaning close to the end that he gave romance hints between Sanji x Pudding, Zoro x Hiyori, Franky X Robin(the caress and the motorbike ride scene) those are fairly recent as well. That’s that. Usopp has Kaya back home. Chopper has that Mink. Brook doesn’t need anyone. Cause he is a skeleton. Luffy I believe promised Hancock and Amazon Lily that he will return. All beside FRobin who I fully support and hope will become canon and while I accept other Robin and Franky ships, I don‘t support them.

I understand why people ship Sanji x Pudding and Zoro x Hiyori. The ships have good bases and as a person I appreciate that. Same can be said about Nami x Vivi and Zoro x Luffy. Same with Kaya x Usopp and Usopp x Sanji

I of course have preferences. I have written down some headcanons here, also as neutral as possible... sometimes less because after all I'm only human XD

… it seems Nami is close to Law’s crew as in they seem fond of her. Also Oda’s wife (real life Nami)supposedly has a crush on Law. I would try to find out what her favourite female character might be in one piece obviously. That might be a hint for Law. Also Kishimoto’s wife loved naruto with hinata thus why they happened. And clearly hinata seemed the best choice for naruto as well since she is so kind and loves him for his personality. I would look for what his wife likes , a female for Law.

Those differences between Manga and Anime can be found for any number of scene and is why I rarely take the anime as canon. It's easier to not take it as canon at all.

To be fair, I haven't thought much about Nami/Law at all (I think I read one or two fics out of curiosity?)... which is mostly because I don't care much for Law as a character (except he is a nerdy dork and being embarassed by someone else - mostly in OP Party) but I do understand why you ship them. And I hope this stage I'm providing will help you find other Law/Nami shipper.

Fic Request Rules

What I Will Write For I'm currently writing for One Piece (Anime & Live Action), and I'm comfortable writing for fem!reader or gn!reader. Most of what I write is x reader, but I've written some character x character one shots as well, so I'd love to try out some more! For NSFW fics, I'm most comfortable writing for fem!reader for now. I'm not confident enough with smutty gender neutral terms yet, and I would hate to write something triggering. I'm reading and learning more, as writing more inclusive smut is a goal of mine. I'll keep learning on my own, but if you'd like to share your thoughts and preferences for gn!reader smut (and pet names, character voice, etc.), I'd love to talk about it with you! I am open to writing dark content, however I will not write it if the request goes against these rules.

What I Will Not Write For Any characters that are minors. If they never become adults in the shows, then I will not age them up to write for them. I will write for characters who do age up in the shows, i.e. I will write for Luffy post timeskip, but not before. Characters I will not write NSFW for include but are not limited to: Brook, Jewelry Bonney, Big Mom, Caribou, Trebol, Vander Decken, Celestial Dragons, Tontatta Tribe, Gecko Moria, Caesar, Mink Tribe, Blackbeard, Black Maria, Spandam, Hannyabal, Akainu, Any Vinsmoke besides Reiju, Vegapunks of any kind I will not write for breeding kink, pregnancy, parenting, ageplay, bigotry, scat/piss/vomit kink, incest (including stepcest), necrophilia, bestiality (including minks), or non/con. I don't think this will be an issue, as I've never seen those triggers being requested for fics before, however that is one reason why I might not fulfill a request. In case you were wondering why I started linking to the ask instead of writing the fic on that post, it is because tumblr formatting drives me fucking bananas! I really enjoy formatting my posts and making them look nice, but for some reason, the pictures and cut line will slip and slide around on their own if I post the fic on the ask post. I will always link back to the request, and credit the person who submitted it for the idea. I will always post the link to the fic on the ask response so that anon's will still get the notification when it's done.
