Cut Fankids Rounds 6
Just axed some kids a month ago, but fankidtober always brings out that urge in me. I’ve slowly been going through the families in this verse and examining them. First to determine if I still like the ship or not (which the answer to this isn’t the important one, it just helps determine what I’ll do given the answer to the second question). Next I look at any kids that ship has and determine if I like the kid (the important question). Do I like the design/do I think I’ll ever be able to figure out a design. And then do I like the character/is there anything there.  If I don’t really like the kid, I try to think if they can be salvaged and either try to salvage them then or push them aside if it’s mostly just a design issue. Those sometimes take a long time to brew.  If I like them but not their parent ship, I’ll see if it’s possible to move them to a new family (like with Aurora), or if their character is too tied in to their parent ship (this is how Ren/Ran was), I’ll just shrug and keep the ship for the narrative.  But what I’m mostly doing is looking at the fankids as OCs and trying to decide if I like them enough to keep them (which you think is what I always would have done and yet…). It doesn’t matter if logically they should exist in the narrative, if I don’t like them as OCs they gotta go.
So this round is mostly Kanto, since I cut too many there so need a new post to fit more cause of the tag limit. So just these are being cut for now
- Trace Hemlock (Alpha; 40) & Chase [Roth] Hemlock (Omega; 40) (AdventurerShipping)
Everly Hemlock - Omega!Girl; 19 (Twin)
I’ve never really been able to figure out anything with her character. She exists mostly to be the opposite of Chloe. Which a character needs more than that to exist. I almost cut her brother but he at least has a base design and a cousin I can play him off of. And kinda lonely single child who’s shy is something at least.  Him being sisterless might be the push I need to do something with him.  Like sure, it loses why they’re named as they are, but so it goes. But I think this is a situation where I need to revamp the fankid for this ship completely or just swap ships.
- Archer Richter (Alpha; 53) & Silver Civello (Omega; 40) (BodyguardShipping)
Enzian Civello - Alpha!Boy
This is really more I just don’t like him as an OC, not that there’s anything wrong with his concept. I’ve also been thinking a lot more about the outcome of Ethan/Silver’s story and wanting to maybe change things? But even if nothing changes on that end, that doesn’t change the fact Envian exists as little more than a footnote for the epilogue. He’s not like Sieg who I’ve thought about in What-If AUs. So best to just cut. Maybe stuff still goes down with Silver and Archer post Silver/Ethan breakup, just no baby. Maybe I change that completely. It’s still in the air, but since I have no desire to do anything with Enzian, he’s gone. Can be revived as Silver’s kid with whoever in ChampionVerse
- Petrel Arrollo (Alpha; 53) & Wendy [Russo] Arrollo (Beta; 49) (MakeupShipping)
Desna Arrolo  - Alpha!Girl; 16
I think her name is really cool. But that’s it. Her parent ship is fun so they’re still together, just have no kid now. Probably the biggest issue is for the Neo Rocket kids, it’s the boys I have more of a concept of. Atlas and Roland both have something, it’s mostly their design I’m kinda stumped on.  But Desna doesn’t really have any substance past being the only girl. She might get revived at some point but feels best to cut her for now.
- Tyson Larch (Alpha; 54) & Mondo [Mopane] Larch (Omega; 46) (BearHugShipping)
Mistral Larch - Omega!Girl; 12  (Mondo’s biological child with Pierce Sego; RocketThrustShipping; fling)
It’s again the no substance. I have A Lot of baby sister characters who don’t really do anything but be cute, but the difference there is I like their designs a lot or their older sib is so important, they get to live by virtue of that (looking at you Mel).  So stuff with her parent ship is still happening (Pierce hooking up with Tyson and Mondo on the regular) just no baby cause I don’t really like Mistral as a character.
- Reggie Eahlstan (Omega) & Lear [REDACTED] Eahlstan (LostKingdomShipping)
Pan Eahlstan - Nonbinary (Reggie’s child with Kincaid)
Rusk Eahlstan - Omega!Boy (Reggie’s son with Zero Axis; MesmericShipping)
This entire thing is getting cut! Mostly I just want to take whatever is going on with Reggie back to the drawing bored. Totally possible his kids will get revived but I felt I rushed him a bit since I had more of a vision for Paul and rushed his brother as a result. But want to just take them off lists for now. Rusk is tentatively being moved to being a Newton/Zero kid but even that’s pretty tentative. I kinda like his design tho so want to keep him alive for now at least.

Album Review: Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages - Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages
The name has changed though the music holds steady on the self-titled debut from Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages.
The 10-track instrumental LP finds the titular composer and former Doors guitarist leading keyboardist Ed Roth, bassist Kevin “Brandino” Brandon and drummer Franklin Vanderbilt across the funk-flavored landscape of the fusion Krieger’s explored for decades on such titles as “Shark Skin Suit,” “Contrary Motion” and “Math Problem.”
Krieger plays slide, traditional leads and chorded rhythm against his tight band. And though it fails to reach the highs of 2020’s Zappaesque the Ritual Begins at Sundown, Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages nevertheless peaks on the neo-soul of “A Day in L.A.” and the funky strut of “Bouncy Betty;” “Ricochet Rabbit,” is meanwhile easily confused as an outtake from Steely Dan’s Gaucho sessions.
What it might lack in consistent listener electrification across its 45-minute runtime, Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages makes up for with a former psychedelic warrior sporting - and still sounding fine in - a different swirl of aural colors.
Grade card: Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages - Robby Krieger & the Soul Savages - B-

The Musk Files - Definitely not a Genius
Tumblr media
This guy is just like every other bully in the world. And to top it off he has money so he’s allowed to get away with behavior most people find abhorrent.
He ignores rules and laws and generally does whatever he wants free of consequence.
He’s a terrible human being.
Some of these links are fairly old since I haven’t posted one of these in a long time.
Tumblr media
Yoel Roth • The New York Times
Backed by fans on social media, Mr. Trump publicly attacked me. Two years later, following his acquisition of Twitter and after I resigned my role as the company’s head of trust and safety, Elon Musk added fuel to the fire. I’ve lived with armed guards outside my home and have had to upend my family, go into hiding for months and repeatedly move.
Chris Taylor • Mashable
“This X shit’s got to go,” author Stephen King tweeted Thursday. That post received 71,000 likes by the end of the day. Elon Musk, creator of “this X shit,” responded to King with a “XX” and a winking-kiss emoji. Musk’s reply had a relatively tiny 7,300 likes at time of writing, despite the fact that Musk has 150 million more followers than King.
Jacob Kastrenakes • The Verge
Elon Musk wants X to be the center of your financial world, handling anything in your life that deals with money. He expects those features to launch by the end of 2024, he told X employees during an all hands call on Thursday, saying that people will be surprised with “just how powerful it is.”
Tumblr media
Dan Sinker
A year ago Elon Musk took over Twitter. Too much has happened in the 365 days that followed to even begin to chronicle it all here, but the short version is that he quickly fired 80% of the staff, broke a bunch of things, paid racists, misogynists, and homophobes to set up shop, picked (sometimes literal) fights with anyone who struck his fancy, lost billions of dollars, and changed the iconic name and logo to the letter X just because.
Zoe Schiffer • platformer.news
On Friday, the National Labor Relations Board issued its first complaint against Elon Musk’s X Corp. The board accused X of illegally firing Yao Yue, a widely respected principal engineer at the company, for pushing back on Musk’s return-to-office policy, according to a copy of the complaint obtained by Platformer.
Eric Hananoki • mediamatters.org
X’s internal reporting system repeatedly responded that posts claiming “Hitler was right” and that there needs to be a “final solution” regarding Jewish people don’t violate the platform’s “safety policies.” This isn’t an isolated example: The Center for Countering Digital Hate similarly released a report today finding that X has failed to remove neo-Nazi content on its platform in numerous cases.
Techdirt
CNBC is running an excerpt from the new Walter Isaacson book about Elon that details what happened with the closing of the data center, and it is way, way, way crazier than even I expected. When Musk talked about how he “disconnected one of the more sensitive server racks,” he meant that entirely literally, in that he literally unplugged it, involving a series of improbable (and ridiculously dangerous and stupid) decisions that resulted with him under the floorboards in the data center pulling the plug, after multiple people warned him not to.
Unprecedented
In July 2023, Mohammed al-Ghamdi, a Saudi Arabian Twitter user who had criticized the Kingdom’s corruption and human rights violations via an anonymous account with only 9 followers was sentenced to death.
Kylie Robison • Fortune
Elon Musk plans to remove headlines from news articles shared on X
Anne Applebaum • The Atlantic
But the drones ran into a problem: Starlink, the satellite-communications system that Ukraine had been using since Russia invaded early last year, unexpectedly wasn’t working. This was a surprise to the engineers. Several people, in Ukraine and elsewhere, frantically called and texted Elon Musk, the owner of Starlink, to persuade him to enable the system.
Sheldon Cooper • Forbes
Twitter, the social media platform officially known as X, appears to have deleted all images from the website that were posted between 2011 and 2014. Links that used Twitter’s native shortening service are also broken.
Pete Syme • Business Insider
An NYU professor with 560,000 followers says he’s been locked out of his X account for over 2 weeks after declining to meet with Elon Musk
Casey Newton • platformer.news
Today let’s talk about a wild weekend of backtracking at the company formerly known as Twitter — and how it should inform the way we cover Elon Musk and his frequent promises in the future.

Reservoir Dogs is a 1992 American neo-noir crime film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino in his feature-length debut. It stars Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney, Michael Madsen, Tarantino, and Edward Bunker as diamond thieves whose heist of a jewelry store goes terribly wrong. Kirk Baltz, Randy Brooks, and Steven Wright also play supporting roles. It incorporates many motifs that have become Tarantino's hallmarks: violent crime, pop culture references, profanity, and nonlinear storytelling.
The film is regarded as a classic of independent film and a cult film and was named "Greatest Independent Film of All Time" by Empire. Although controversial at first for its depictions of violence and heavy use of profanity, Reservoir Dogs was generally well-received, with the cast being praised by many critics. Despite not being heavily promoted during its theatrical run, the film became a modest success in the United States after grossing $2.8 million against its scant budget. It achieved higher popularity after the success of Tarantino's next film, Pulp Fiction (1994). A soundtrack was released featuring songs used in the film, which are mostly from the 1970s.
Box office
Reservoir Dogs premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1992. It became the festival's most talked-about film, and it was subsequently picked up for distribution by Miramax Films. After being shown at several other film festivals, including in Cannes, Sitges, and Toronto, Reservoir Dogs opened in the United States in 19 theaters on October 9, 1992 with a first week total of $147,839. It was expanded to 61 theaters on October 23, 1992 and totaled $2,832,029 at the domestic box office. The film grossed more than double that in the United Kingdom, where it did not receive a home video release until 1995. During the period of unavailability on home video, the film was re-released in UK cinemas in June 1994.

Under the leadership of Elon Musk, Twitter, now dubbed “X,” has been increasingly cooperative with German authorities. The latest reports reveal a substantial uptick in data sharing, especially concerning online hate crimes. X’s Transparency Takes a Turn Since acquiring the platform, Musk has championed the protection of free speech. However, the boundaries of free speech differ across countries like Germany, which has stringent hate speech regulations. Consequently, X has shared user data with German authorities to address potential breaches of these laws. Moreover, the number of cases where X complies with German requests has risen noticeably. From the Munich public prosecutors office, Sebastian Murer reported that X now shares user data in 50 to 100 cases monthly with Bavarian authorities. Such numbers signify a dramatic increase post-acquisition. Additionally, a recent report by Rest of World, analyzing data from Harvard University’s Lumen database, pointed out that X’s compliance with government requests for censorship and surveillance had surged between November and April. Most notable were the requests from Turkey, Germany, and India. Shifting Priorities or Mere Compliance? Previously, Twitter was known to resist government requests that seemed overreaching, especially regarding online speech. However, Yoel Roth, former head of Twitter’s trust and safety team, indicated this resistance waned under Musk’s leadership. Roth suggests that while resisting requires resources, compliance is a simpler path. However, as Germany steps up its efforts to curb online hate, especially after the assassination of politician Walter Lübcke by a neo-Nazi, this cooperation becomes more crucial. Josephine Ballon, from Hate Aid, emphasized the importance of local politicians and activists in open public discourse. She noted the potential threat that online hate campaigns pose to democracies. Where Does This Leave X? With Musk at the helm, X has undeniably loosened its regulations regarding on-site speech. Some experts believe that this, in turn, has led to a surge in misinformation and hate speech on the platform. However, while Musk’s transparency in dealings with a democratic nation like Germany is commendable, critics argue that such cooperation might set a precedent, making it challenging for X to deny future requests from more authoritarian governments. Hence, while X’s collaboration with foreign governments may seem advantageous in certain contexts, it does raise questions about the potential implications for user privacy and freedom of speech globally. On cover designs, do you have favorite or least favorite designs or trends in book design? Past or present.
Most "least favorites" age into quaintness, like lurid pulp covers of classics in the initial paperback era. I absolutely loathe, however, the Penguin Classics Deluxe trend of getting indie comics type artists to draw ironically cutesy and trivializing cartoon covers:
Tumblr media
On the other hand, you don't need to put contemporaneous painting and sculpture on the front of old books, as when they inevitably wrap Henry James in John Singer Sargent. You can modernize. My favorite in the modernizing vein, recently praised by Adam Gopnik in The New Yorker, is Milton Glaser's Signet Classics Shakespeare series.
Of all the riches embedded in the Monacelli book, it may be the complete covers of the Signet Shakespeare, from around the same period as the Dylan poster, that are the most arresting. A central figure, usually enigmatically representative of the play’s action, appears in half-finished form, done in a charmingly elegant, linear style that recalls both Aubrey Beardsley and white-figure Greek vases; only a small patch of the drawing is in color, while the rest spins out like suggestive smoke. “Hamlet” is an agonized youth’s face, with a watching father’s head springing from his own and a barely suggested woman’s head—Ophelia?—alongside; “Julius Caesar,” memorably, is a tilting classical figure in profile, a zigzag of blue on a white implied toga to suggest greatness and a spot of pure red nearby to imply his stabbing. If you had no idea of what a play was about, none of these covers would tell you. Glaser relies on a general knowledge of the text—Hamlet is haunted, Julius Caesar is killed—and then suggests with his cryptic images that this story is more interesting and somehow more contemporary than one might have thought. The covers were less illustrations of the plays than they were invitations to read them.
Finally, the 1990s Vintage International paperback designs by Marc J. Cohen and Susan Mitchell are wonderful, possibly my all-time favorite. For me, they're still the tonal-visual correlate of 20th-century literature: Joyce, Faulkner, Mann, Camus, Ellison, McCarthy, Byatt, Roth. It helps that I graduated to reading Faulkner and Nabokov from reading Vertigo Comics, since the Vintage covers, with their broodingly or lyrically "historicized" mixed media and typefaces, belong to the same postmodern culture of design as Dave McKean's Sandman covers, an aesthetic totally antithetical to the post-Underground Comix cartoonishness favored by Penguin Classics—a style that shows, too, how we might understand at least one wing of postmodernism as a neo-Romanticism, as, that is, an affirmation. I very much dislike the streamlined blandness, what Twitter celeb Paul Skallas calls "refinement culture," of Vintage's current redesign, though it's not as bad as the homogenizing "blob" situation of contemporary literary fiction.
