The Crack Era played a huge role in hip- hop during this time because it was consumed and affected so many people mainly in minority neighborhoods. Crack was something that majority of people were doing and if they were not doing it, they most likely sold it or knew someone that did either or. Because this drug became so known in these neighborhoods where hip- hop was created and evolving, it became the new thing to talk about. Like we talked about before in class, hip-hop involves politics just in a more entertaining, sometimes subliminal way. Ironically, we always hear that crack was done in places like the South Bronx, Brooklyn, and other neighborhoods that were predominately African Americans and Latinos, but when crack first came about, it was a “rich white people drug,” said Chuck D,  that blacks and latinos could not get a hold of. For some reason once minorities were able to get their hands on this drug, it came with a whole new set of problems. Mothers, brothers, aunts, friends, boyfriends, sisters, everyone you could think of started using crack and it caused babies to end up in foster care or dead because mothers OD or were trying to sell their children for it. The main thing that crack in these neighborhoods led to was arrest. Mass incarceration is said to be the New Jim Crow because it is a new form of slavery. Non- whites are arrested with handcuffs (chains), they are put in a box with bars, told when they can use the bathroom, shower, eat, etc., and all of this is run by rich white people who get richer every time someone steps foot behind bars. Also, after someone does their time, they are considered a felon and with this title you are told to go back in society and become a normal citizen by getting a job, finding a place to stay and provide for yourself. However, with a record you are forced to check the box that ask if you have ever been convicted of a felony, which 9/10 is the reason they don’t get jobs and they lose their right to vote. During and after slavery, blacks couldn’t vote because of obstacles like the grandfather clause, gerrymandering, being a felon, etc. If this is not modern day slavery I don’t know what is.

Quote
When the system of mass incarceration collapses (and if history is any guide, it will), historians will undoubtedly look back and marvel that such an extraordinarily comprehensive system of racialized social control existed in the United States. How fascinating, they will likely say, that a drug war was waged almost exclusively against poor people of color—people already trapped in ghettos that lacked jobs and decent schools. They were rounded up by the millions, packed away in prisons, and when released, they were stigmatized for life, denied the right to vote, and ushered into a world of discrimination. Legally barred from employment, housing, and welfare benefits—and saddled with thousands of dollars of debt—these people were shamed and condemned for failing to hold together their families. They were chastised for succumbing to depression and anger, and blamed for landing back in prison. Historians will likely wonder how we could describe the new caste system as a system of crime control, when it is difficult to imagine a system better designed to create—rather than prevent—crime.

Mellon Foundation Awards Emergency Grants to Prison Education Programs as COVID Crisis Continues
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced the award of 15 emergency grants totaling $1.5 million for providers of higher education in prison. The grants will allow incarcerated students across the nation to continue learning while in-person instruction is paused as part of ongoing efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.
https://mellon.org/news-blog/articles/covid-crisis-continues-mellon-foundation-awards-emergency-grants-support-prison-education-programs/
The Foundation also recently issued a call for proposals from US organizations and programs that focus on humanities-centered visionary higher learning educational practices for incarcerated students. This competition is open to prison education programs that confer university or college credit toward degree-granting programs, and to organizations whose mission includes the analysis and support of higher education in prison. Winners will be announced December 11, 2020, and grants ranging from $250,000 to $1,000,000 will be issued thereafter.
https://mellon.org/programs/higher-learning/call-proposals-future-higher-learning-prison/
These funds are intended to provide an opportunity to pilot innovations and new approaches in existing programs. While future Foundation support may be possible, grantees are encouraged to include sustainability planning in the proposal narrative.
Applications will be due by August 28, 2020 at 12:00 pm ET. Proposals will be evaluated by Foundation staff and an external panel of reviewers. All applicants will be notified of the status of their submission by October 16, 2020. If selected, additional information and materials will be requested in a final proposal to be reviewed by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Grants will range from $250,000 to $1,000,000, for use over a two-year period.
Grant periods would begin January 1, 2021 and end on December 31, 2022.
