Rowan’s Notes: got a twofer! the second is inspired by the first - i'm a sucker for alternate timeline plots of any kind and these are both total gems. the situational angst gets fixed with such romantic determination, i can't read one without immediately jumping back to the other!

Shane was paralyzed as the blade part of Ryan’s katana swiped up when he swung it thoughtlessly—drunkenly—and Shane remembered blinking like the scene would change if he opened his eyes again, but the man was still writhing around on the ground with a stripe of glistening red on his throat and Ryan was staring down at him like he’d never seen anything so horrific or gripping.

They both stared numbly, intently, until the man’s erratic choking spasms on the cement became a haunting stillness in a pool of his own blood.

“Whoops,” Ryan said, the low register of his voice seeming like a shout to Shane in the silence of the night and of the now dead man laying at their feet. --

“Don’t,” Ryan says. “Don’t say—”

“Boobs,” Shane says faintly. He’s still staring.

“Okay, well, my eyes are up here,” Ryan snaps.

Do you outline before you start writing? If so, how far do you stray from that outline?

So my first two fanfics were very long oneshots (~13k words) and both of them were outlined. I wrote an outline of the scenes and then filled them in, one by one, not necessarily all in order. I adhered pretty closely to the outline. Then I went back and smoothed it out. I wrote these very shortly after I graduated college, and that was always my method for writing papers in college, where it absolutely helped me. As an intuitive thinker, I have trouble organizing my thoughts. Everything in my brain is always making connections with everything, lighting up like a fractal Christmas tree. So outlining was very effective in stopping my term papers from turning into sprawling stoner rants. However, creative writing is very different from an academic paper, where you are expected to adhere to a tight structure. When I write fic, I am much more vibe-driven than plot-driven. Because the plot is taken care of already. Writing fic, for me, is about exploring characters and themes. So after those first two, I stopped relying on outlines. Instead, I try to designate a few things that will lie at the center of each fic - a word, a quote, an image, an idea, a theme - and then just let myself riff on that. Like crystals forming around a piece of string.

Is there a trope you haven’t written yet but really want to?

I love narrator tropes, and I've played with some of them a bit. I am proud of my work with unreliable narrators, I have done first person and second person (which I think is pretty daring in fandom spaces especially, where so many people say they will click out of both on sight). I read a book recently called The Substitute by Nicole Lundrigen that featured an anonymous first person narrator. Half of the chapters were in the first person, and the other half were in the third person. It was heavily implied that the first person narrator was among the characters who showed up in the third person chapters, but the author made it very difficult to figure out who exactly it was, right up until the end. I was very impressed by that! I would love to try my hand at an anonymous narrator some time.

What fic are you most proud of?

Hmmm, that's hard because I am proud of different things in different fics! I always tout Shadow of My Wound because I am proud of (1) pulling off (in my own humble opinion) the second person narrator and (2) breathing real life into a very minor and - frankly - stupidly designed and executed character. I am proud of Possession because I think it is a feat of Hojo characterization, which there isn't enough of out there. And one of my oldest (and longest) fics, The Tigress, will always be special to me, even though I think my writing has improved a lot since then. I am proud of how it adheres to its central theme/conceit, and of how much of my own soul and vulnerability I was able to put into it.

What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

I am really proud of the drabble "Daughter" from Threads, Knots, and Needles.

Four. She has no father. It doesn’t bother her.

Five. She has no father. It does.

Six. Her father has no name. Mom and Grandma whisper about “him.” Lucrecia presses her ear to the door.

Ten. Her father has brown eyes, like her. She’s learning about genes. Mom’s eyes are blue.

Sixteen. Her father has a name and address. He calls another brown-eyed girl his daughter. He doesn’t call Lucrecia anything; he asks her to leave.

Nineteen. She has Grim. No man’s ever cared like he does. Not without wanting something.

Twenty-three. He has a son. She’ll always come second.

This does so much lifting, in only 100 words, around the relationship between Lucrecia and Grimoire, as I conceptualize it. And, by extension, so much around the relationship between Lucrecia and Vincent. And even Lucrecia and Sephiroth. I feel like the extended exploration of Lucrecia's relationship with Grimoire, as (lazily) presented in Dirge, is one of the things that really makes my version of these events mine. It is so integral to everything. Grimoire is the ghost that hangs heavy over the Jenova project. So do other members of the prior generation, but especially Grimoire, because he drives both Lucrecia and Vincent's actions in so many ways and is the confounding factor that makes their relationship intractable - and also the primary driving force behind their relationship occurring at all. Without him, the two of them might have eyefucked each other a little bit, but it probably never would have gone beyond that at all. It's his legacy that pulls them, disastrously, together.

And this drabble shows how the roots of that were sown long before Grimoire's death. Yes, Lucrecia absolutely does feel responsible for his death in my version, and that is a big factor in why she does what she does. But this background adds even more context. Grimoire was special to her. A father figure. One of the only people she trusted and felt cared about her. So his death, and her guilt, carries all the additional weight of that. And resentment and jealously toward Vincent before she even meets him. Vincent therefore becomes so many things at once to her in addition to a fraught lover - a replacement, a rival, a threat, someone she believes she has wronged and stolen from, even an almost-sibling in a sense. And their relationship is asymmetrical. She is a stranger to him, but he is not a stranger to her. It's deeply fucked.

And then there's Lucrecia's abandonment and rejection by her own biological father (and the way the circumstances of her birth more or less destroyed her mother), and the way that trauma informs so much of how she understands parenthood. And her relationships with men. And her desire to make a name for herself. To be seen and acknowledged and the best.

Johnlock Marriage Recs

A couple of years ago, I posted a list of angsty Johnlock marriage fics. Then last year a list of wedding-themed fics (although it’s not necessarily John and Sherlock who get married.)

So to round things off, I thought it was time for an update of fics in which John and Sherlock get married (although it may not be the main point of the fic).

A Desperate Indulgence by LollipopCop (34K, M, Johnlock) John thinks it's 2012 after waking up with amnesia, having no memory of  Mary. Sherlock, exhausted from years of tension and hiding his love,  pretends they got married instead.

A Study in Sentiment by ManicMoose (11K, E, Johnlock) The Honorable Captain John Watson has been invalided home, only to find  that his elder sister Harriet, the Viscount Sondes, has gambled away  everything of value, including his own modest inheritance. With no other  recourse, he reluctantly enters the marriage market, in the hopes of a  securing a convenient spouse willing to trade their fortune for his  family name.

Castle and Sand by grey853 (158K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John both have difficult pasts that affect their evolving  relationship. When John prevents a mugging, it sets off a dangerous  chain of events that not only impacts him, but his whole family. Spare Change by Ermerness (51K, E, Johnlock) The Holmes family is one of the richest and most powerful in England.  Sherlock spends his time flying around the world on the family's private  jet drinking a lot and shopping at expensive boutiques as a way of  trying to alleviate his endless boredom. His mother decides it's time he  settles down with someone powerful, wealthy and well connected. John  Watson happens to be none of those things.

Teach Your Children Well by Silvergirl (12K, E, Johnlock) John decides to send Rosie to the local school a year early. Sherlock  assumes he doesn’t want her becoming solitary, hyper-intellectual,  hyper-focused—in other words, like Sherlock. It doesn’t help that  Rosie’s prospective teacher is a dead ringer for Nicole Kidman, and is  making overtures to John by text. But both fathers are wide of the mark:  well, there’s always something, right?

The Alchemy of Sea Glass by reveling_in_mayhem (22K, E, Johnlock) Salt and air and sand surrounded their little party of three. Crashing  waves, gull cries, and the exhilarated exclamations of an excited  three-year-old served as the soundtrack to a day filled with blue skies  and bright sunshine.

The Alphabet Vignettes by suitesamba (49K, M, Johnlock) Twenty-six vignettes featuring Sherlock and John's life after S4.  These begin just after E3 and continue into retirement in Sussex, but are presented in a non-linear fashion.

The Happily Ever After Hypothesis by Berty (12K, E, Johnlock) John and Sherlock are attending a mysterious party Chez Holmes. But when  Sherlock reveals that he has brought something for John to dress up in  this time, it's not what John was expecting.

The Pieces That Fall to Earth by Itsallfine (49K, M, Johnlock) John and Sherlock have hit rock bottom, but with all their armor stripped away, they can finally speak honestly, seek healing, and find the truths that matter most.

The Thing is by TSylvestris (56K, E, Johnlock) The problem with living with Sherlock, John thought, was that you never, never, ever knew the significance of anything.  Like your flatmate's nose buried in your hair.  Whilst you're in bed.

😐 The Kiss Quotient (The Kiss Quotient #1) (Helen Hoang, author; Carly Robins, narrator) - I ended up finishing this book mostly frustrated and annoyed, but this is definitely a YMMV book. There was a lot I really liked, but, like an MCU/DCEU movie, it was entirely too fucking long, just dragging all the ‘conflict’ out what felt like endlessly. I quit the audiobook at 80%, because I just could not take it & it’s hard to skim through audio. I do think I may have been more forgiving of the overall experience if I read it in text & not audio. (The narrator was great; this was not a narration issue.) I finished in ebook since I could skim right through all the tiresome bullshit for the tiny satisfying nuggets.

hello & welcome back to the june - july edition of fic rec: month(s) in review! we have a L O T to unpack this time, so let’s dive right in! throughout june & july, we have been blessed with the majority of @larryabroad, as well as the bulk of @hlsummerexchange2019, all of @wordplayfics, wanker’s day fic fest, and many more that i’m probably forgetting. summer was a great time to be a fic reader for sure, thank you to every author who contributed!!

Louis is a bit embarrassed when Harry picks on him from the stage, but when he's invited backstage after the show, he wonders what Harry Styles could possibly want with a single dad and his kid from Manchester...

This was such a cute read! At a whopping 580k, there is a LOT to sink your teeth into. Though I started it at the beginning of June, I haven’t even nearly finished yet, but it’s so good that it’s made it onto my rec list!

Louis is a solo officer on Space Station Zeta and the isolation can present many challenges, not least of which is that it’s really bloody hard to date. He’s pinning his hopes on that changing with a fellow solo officer, Harry, from a neigbouring station who gives great banter and has a gorgeous smile. Maybe online dating has its benefits after all?

Oh, this one was so good!!! The thing I love about literally anything Dee writes is that she just thinks completely outside the box. I feel like I never quite know what’s going to happen (in the best way!) and her originality totally made this fic amazing. (7k)

Louis can’t begin to understand how he’s always this close and still can’t manage to make Harry his. He stands up and gets another beer. AU. Louis studies astronomy; Harry studies Louis. They spend their summers on the water and it shouldn't be complicated (spoiler: it is).

This was such a good read! It’s written in such a way that you’re utterly sucked into the verse so much that you’re a bit sappy when the fic is over. Kinda makes you feel a bit lovedrunk just from reading it. (29k)

As an engagement gift from his parents, Harry and his fiance receive an all expenses paid cruise trip for two. But one week before they're set to sail, Harry walks in on his fiance cheating on him. Newly single, with the cruise tickets in hand, and his bags already packed, Harry brings along his sister instead. And maybe the cute bartender on the ship might just be the person Harry needs to help him put back together all of his broken pieces.

I have so much to say about this one! I had the absolute honor of beta’ing this 35k work (which im pretty sure i just cheerlead you bc nicole you know grammar isn’t my strong suit...lmfao) and honestly it has become a fic that i love so much! nicole is such a talented writer; everything she writes just brings out so much emotion from her audience, and she has such a great sense of characterization! if you liked this one, check out its sequel, Now I’m Moving Up because it’s great too!!!!

Louis Tomlinson is a successful writer who rents a beach house on the Cape to try and finish the final book in his successful Charles Compass trilogy.

So I’m convinced that any rec list I make will not be complete if Sada isn’t on it. Here’s the thing - I fell in love with this story before she was revealed as the author, and honestly I had no clue. She’s got this amazing way of being able to change her style to fit the kind of story she’s trying to tell. This is such a good look at the writing process, highly recommend! (9k)

Honestly I feel like you spied through all my hopes and dreams and loves (including parenthesis in fic titles??? love it) and squished it all into this fic. it’s just the best fic, and it feels like warm summer air and tracing constellations in the stars and falling in love. if you haven’t read this already, please do!!!! It was so good I teared up when I first read it! (25k)

Okay. Okay. This fic literally is one I will remember for the rest of my life, and i’m not even being dramatic about it! So, I really do enjoy leaving authors detailed comments about their fics, but that just wasn’t enough... I really had to message Lauren this whole essay about how Heading for Limbo helped me deal with a lot of emotions I was feeling in my own personal life, and it helped me fully realize that i’m bisexual. (did i just come out?? yikes) it was nice to see a fic where things weren’t perfect over a long stretch of time. It was amazing to see Harry realize his sexuality later in life, because that was one of my main struggles. this fic is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. Post-Ep/Missing Scene Thusday

Mulder taking care of Scully, and Scully letting Mulder take care of her, is a very, very delicate balance one must strike in a fic in order for it to work and work well. Take today’s rec, for instance. It’s a Mulder-introspective piece, and it gives us his musings not on the hows things have changed between them, but the whys, and what it means for him specifically to be able to be now call himself Scully’s person. 

It’s a beautifully written piece of fic, full of turns of phrase and imagery and snippets of Mulder’s backstory that made us really feel for him. Feel just how momentous this was, to finally be able to have found his human credential.
