Ever since the Norwegian women’s beach handball team turned the fact that they were required to wear teeny-tiny bikini bottoms for competition into a cause célèbre, a quiet revolution has been brewing throughout women’s sports. It’s one that questions received conventions about what female athletes do — or don’t — have to wear to perform at their very best.

It has touched women’s soccer (why white shorts?), gymnastics (why not a unitard rather than a leotard?), field hockey (why a low-cut tank top?) and many more, including running.

So it probably should not have come as a shock to Nike that when it offered a sneak peek of the Team U.S.A. track and field unies during a Nike Air event in Paris celebrating its Air technology on Thursday (which also included looks for other Olympic athletes, like Kenya’s track and field team, France’s basketball team and Korea’s break dancing delegation), they were met with some less-than-enthusiastic reactions.

See, the two uniforms Nike chose to single out on the mannequins included a men’s compression tank top and mid-thigh-length compression shorts and a woman’s bodysuit, cut notably high on the hip. It looked sort of like a sporty version of a 1980s workout leotard. As it was displayed, the bodysuit seemed as if it would demand some complicated intimate grooming.

Citius Mag, which focuses on running news, posted a photo of the uniforms on Instagram, and many of its followers were not amused.

“What man designed the woman’s cut?” wrote one.

“I hope U.S.A.T.F. is paying for the bikini waxes,” wrote another. So went most of the more than 1,900 comments.

The running comedian Laura Green posted an Instagram reel in which she pretended to be trying on the look (“We’re feeling pretty, um, breezy,” she said) and checking out the rest of the athlete’s kit bag, which turned out to include hair spray, lip gloss and a “hysterectomy kit,” so the women would not have to worry about periods.

When asked, Nike did not address the brouhaha directly, but according to John Hoke, the chief innovation officer, the woman’s bodysuit and the man’s shorts and top are only two of the options Nike will have for its Olympic runners. There are “nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s and a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events,” Mr. Hoke said.

Women will be able to opt for compression shorts, a crop top or tank and a bodysuit with shorts rather than bikini bottoms. The full slate of looks was not on hand in Paris but more will be revealed next week at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit in New York. The Paris reveal was meant to be a teaser.

Mr. Hoke also pointed out that Nike consults with a large number of athletes at every stage of the uniform design. Its track and field roster includes Sha’Carri Richardson, who happened to be wearing the compression shorts during the Paris presentation, and Athing Mu. And there are certainly runners who like the high-cut brief. (The British Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, another Nike athlete, told The New York Times last summer that while she opts to run in briefs, she also leans toward a leotard style, rather than a two-piece.)

What Nike missed, however, was that in choosing those two looks as the primary preview for Team U.S.A., rather than, say, the matching shorts and tanks that will be also available, it shored up a longstanding inequity in sports — one that puts the body of a female athlete on display in a way it does not for the male athlete.

“Why are we presenting this sexualized outfit as the standard of excellence?” said Lauren Fleshman, a U.S. national champion distance runner and the author of “Good for a Girl.” “In part because we think that’s what nets us the most financial gain from sponsors or NIL opportunities, most of which are handed out by powerful men or people looking at it through a male gaze. But women are breaking records with ratings in sports where you don’t have to wear essentially a bathing suit to perform.”

The problem such imagery creates is twofold. When Nike chose to reveal the high-cut bodysuit as the first Olympics outfit, purposefully or not, the implication for anyone watching is that “this is what excellence looks like,” Ms. Fleshman said.

That perception filters down to young athletes and becomes the model girls think they have to adopt, often at a developmental stage when their relationships with their bodies are particularly fraught.

And more broadly, given the current political debate around adjudicating women’s bodies, it reinforces the idea that they are public property.

Still, Ms. Fleshman said, “I’m glad Nike put this image out as the crown jewel of Olympic Team design,” because it may act as the catalyst for another conversation that has been long overdue.

“If you showed this outfit to someone from the W.N.B.A. or women’s soccer, they would laugh in your face,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to normalize it for track and field anymore. Time’s up on that.”

hear me out, we obviously saw him with the twins but he said he was super nervous going into that since he is only used to hanging out with his nephew. imagine soobin with two daughters having his first son and he thinks it's gonna be a breeze since "boys are easier" but boy, was he wrong. his cutie son is a lot to handle and it turns out raising a boy from birth is a *lot* different than being a leader

like every other moa, I can see soob having the most kids. he just seems like the type of guy to have kids hanging off of him. plays video games with his kids but is also very strict about them washing their face/brushing their teeth. reads to them a lot and gets sucked into the storybooks they read together even when it's something silly like the day the crayons quit (a favorite of mine when I was a student librarian hehe)

But honestly, you were too quick to judge. Even though Springer acted like he was somewhat stupid and was tongue kissing every girl in the school different days of the week, he knew what he wanted, and what he wanted was you. Sure, you were a sort of normal girl that minded her own business and kept a small group of friends close to her, but something about you was different.

So of course when he asked you out to that party he meant it, but you just didn't know it quite yet. The night of the party, you were supposed to be picked up by Connie. People rumored around school that he had a big ass Cadillac SUV and you weren't surprised when he rode up in, what it looked like, that shiny ass SUV.

He rolled down his window to obviously check you out, but to also let you know he wasn't some random nigga pullin up at your dorm. He motioned his hands for you to get in while he looked you up and down. You were wearing a short black maxi dress with pink hearts covered on the chest. You wore some J's, typical you but hey you wanna be comfortable at this crazy ass frat party.

You turn to him and find he's already staring at you which you made you even more nervous than you usually would be.

"Hey."

You smile at him and to your relief, he gives you a small smile back.

"Hey, you look great in that dress." He says in a heavy, deep voice that honestly made your stomach flutter. No like legit, a big ass butterfly felt like it was flapping it's wings in your stomach.

"Thanks Connie, you look good too."

You say, slurring on your words a bit. He looked pretty good though. He had on a black tee and baggie jeans, paired with some Nike's. He was indecisive on wearing some cologne, but in the end he decided it would top off the fit, which made you really happy because he smelled like heaven.

"Thanks y/n." He said looking you up and down like he wasn't gonna freak you right then and there, and it was true, he might've, but he wanted this to last for a little while longer.

Soon, you and Springer get to the party. It was a good 11 pm at night and there were shit tons of cups on the front lawn and dozens of people screaming and shouting while music was blasting just a couple feet away--it was already too nerve racking for you.

Connie seemed to notice that and instantly went to hold your hand in an attempt to calm your nerves, which it did, but not in that sense.

As you entered the party, you headed straight to the drinks. I mean not straight, cause it took a while for your dumb ass to find the kitchen, but you smiled as you saw a big bowl of red liquid that you were definitely gonna be sippin on the rest of the night. While you were in the kitchen, Springer was out talking to his friends at the party.

It didn't really make you feel any sort of way honestly, I mean you were both here to have fun, so what was the harm in being with other people? Not even a minute passes by and some random guy is trying to hit on you. Even though he may have been random, he was kinda cute so you sat there for what felt like was forever laughing at his corny ass jokes and when he wasn't looking, trying to find a way to escape without any hard feelings.

And there was Connie. He noticed the guy looking at you from a far and he watched as he slowly made his way over to you. He watched at how you two laughed together, and how you looked up at the guy with those pretty fucking doe eyes. It really pissed him off, so he intervened.

You look around for the last time praising the angels for a split second when you see Connie stomping over to you and the guy. Connie stands infront of the two of you, back facing the random guy.

"Y/n lets go." He says at you, frowning. This confused you, and soon this confused you even more when Springer suddenly gripped your arm and yanked you away from the dude stomping over to a bathroom, sort of making a scene.

"What are you doing?"

Connie doesn't respond, instead he locks the door and makes his way towards you. You were nervous and a little scared. What was he going to do to you? Why is he acting like this? He was fine a minute ago.

Soon, you felt a warm minty gum flavored taste in your mouth as warm hands grip your waist. This nigga can't be serious. You think to yourself, but you think a little harder. It's Connie and he was hot, why not give him a shot?

So you reluctantly make your way to cuffing his cheeks and returning the sloppy kisses, with a little bit of tongue. All of this was exciting to you. I mean, was this the first steamy sess you've ever had? No. But this had to be so far your top 3.

Connie lets go with an impatient sigh.

"Take your clothes off." He said, yet again impatient. You obliged like a lovesick puppy, because you were. You took off your dress and bra leaving you in just your underwear. Following his commands were exciting and it honestly made the damp in your panties even damper.

It was weird how he could have you wrapped around his long ass fingers like that in an instant, but it's okay, whets the worst that can happen?

He takes his shirt off and he grins at how you keep your arms across your chest in an attempt to keep them out of his sight.

He kissed his way down your body eventually getting to your hands. He looked up at you with playful eyes.

Im kind of like, new to lesbian culture and butch culture. Im 15, I've known I liked girl since I was like, 9 or 10. And I spent most of that time convinced I was bi or pan because of comhet or whatever. Anyway, I wanna know if you have any advice on how to start dressing more butch? And just like more butch media I can interact with and go through to learn more about it

Be cautious in online spaces that are geared towards lesbians and butches, since most of the folks on there are adults and will be discussing adult themes.

Dressing butch, and butch media. When you try on a new gender expression, most folks start with undergarments. That way it's private and you can decide if you feel more confident before you start changing stuff people will notice. Most butches I know wear sports bras, boxer briefs, and ugly ass crew socks. Sports bras weren't an option for me until after my breast reduction, so I wore minimizing bras. I likes Hanes womens' boxer briefs and their white crew socks (ugly I know but trust they are so comfy you'll never go back).

For clothing, it's all about the fit and hem lines. You'll have to try on a bunch of clothes to find what really works for you.

For shorts, try women's soccer shorts because they have a lower hem line than shit like nike shorts, but they won't swallow you like men's basketball shorts. For pants and jeans, tighter is going to read as feminine but that doesn't mean you should wear parachute pants. (google mc hammer and don't tell me you've never hear U Can't Touch This) Go for bootcut or straightcut jeans. You might have formals or dances or something in which case I recommend getting a women's tuxedo.

For shirts, get you a multipack of t shirts from the men's section. Great place to start. Men's t shirts aren't as clingy as women's, they're cheaper, they have pockets, and they're a little longer in the torso. Pair a t-shirt with a casual open button up (like a flannel) and you've got yourself a look that killed it back when I was in school with my fellow dinosaurs. I tuck the t shirt into my jeans and wear a leather or recycled bike tire belt with a buckle I found at an antique store.

Ultimately, it's more about what makes you confident than what aligns with the gender expression you're aiming for.

If you saw me at a coffee shop, I'd be wearing crocs or beat up work sneakers, Levi 401 jeans, a big hoodie, and maybe a baseball cap. I also like to paint my nails black and wear the same two necklaces I've worn since I was like 12. That's what makes me confident.
