my favourite sexuality for comic book characters to be is "we made this other character canonically queer because of their relationship with them but for some reason they are still canonically straight"

like wade wilson? mostly canonically queer because of the period where he was married to cable. he was in a queer relationship, so we have to just make him canonically queer. (Yes I know it's not the only reason, I have read all his extremely camp early 00s comics, but lets be real they'd have kept insisting that was all just a joke if it wasn't for Cable and Deadpool).

cable? definitely straight. 100% straight. obviously cable is straight. his relationship with wade is only gay during the & Deadpool, in the Cable part of the book it's very straight. He stands next to a woman sometimes, that's how you can tell it's not gay.

Kitty has, finally, been allowed to come out, but for like a decade, Illyana was canon queer because she dated Kitty, but Kitty was definitely straight and would never date a woman, and no one at marvel thought there was anything weird about that.

Marvel has way more of these, mostly by virtue of having more queer characters and also chris clairmont (you can never understate the impact of chris clairmont in these matters) but Tim Drake and Kon Kent spring to mind from DC.

I think you could even make a solid argument that 616 Tony and Steve are that, given Tony is out now and Steve, somehow, still isn't.

anyway you don't really get these in any other medium, because they require multiple writers who all wildly disagree with one another to all write the same characters to happen, but i love them, and as much as I want Cable and Kon to come out, I kind of hope this never stops happening in comics, it's just never not funny.

I have received a few hate comments in the past when I just started writing. Some of them were pretty traumatizing ngl and I had to take like a year break because of it 🥲 so I know how you feel and how upsetting it is. I'm so sorry that this happened to you, sweetheart 😭I'm sending you the biggest hug right now. Nobody in the world deserves a hate comment, especially when you're a writer/artist who creates stuff for free.

I just checked your blog to see the hate comment you were referring to (I hope you don't mind 😭) and I saw that some anon was mad because you wrote a smutty fic involving a character that's still a minor in canonverse.

Now, honey, I'm 10000000% on your side because a) it's your fic, your work, your blog, as long as you've put up some warnings, you can write whatever the hell you want. b) you've aged them up in your fics but even if you didn't age them up in your fics, that still doesn't make it okay for these people to be rude and attack you for it cause they're FICTIONAL. These characters are not real people with real life problems, they're literally just a bunch of drawings. That anon is spending their energy defending lines on paper and hurting a real person in the process.

Tbh I feel like this happens pretty often no matter what fandom you're in and I find it super weird that some people are actually upset about this. It's fiction! It's not real! And it's not like you support the stuff that's happening in the story! Like if you write about character A killing someone, it doesn't make you a murderer. It doesn't mean you support the act. If you write about incest, it doesn't mean you want to sleep with your dad or your brother. It's simply just for the plot, to make the story interesting. To share your ideas and be creative about it. And, the most important thing is, you're not forcing these people to read your fics, are you? They decided to read them on their own. And if you already wrote the warnings and they CHOSE to ignore them, that's their fault. It's like you see a bowl of hot peppers and you know they're spicy as hell but you choose to eat them anyway and when your tongue is on fire, you get angry "WHY IS THIS THING SO SPICY" like what????

A message for that anon: When you read stuff you don't like (stuff that someone wrote for FREE, stuff that someone spent hours or days creating it), the easiest thing you can do is just close the tab. Literally it takes zero energy to do it. Don't attack these writers with hate comments. Don't hurt their feelings. You don't know how hard they've worked on the story, their struggles in real life, or how insecure they are about their writing. One bad comment and they might stop writing forever, even when it's something that brought them comfort before. There are millions of other fics out there that you can read. Just scroll away and move on.

considering that raphael was familiar with durge’s handiwork and tells them that when they first meet, can’t help but think of the potential that mizora is familiar with durge too or at the very least has heard their name mentioned in her circles. and in a wyll romance context, imagine mizora being vaguely familiar of durge meanwhile he doesn’t know anything about her past, so it’s a surprise for her at first when she realises that the oh so gallant blades of frontiers is falling for someone that’s such a sinner. then the realisation that he doesn’t know anything abt them and they’re also not telling him anything ..??? that’s too entertaining for her maybe she’ll stick around and wait to see what happens. mizora whispering in his ear telling wyll that durge isn’t what they seem, and he’s gonna be so sooo disappointed later on when he finds out the truth about their sweet little love and because she’s such a generous and wonderful patron she can tell him the truth for the very small price of adding more shit in his contract - nothing is for free after all. like mizora giving him small warnings early on so she can say I told you so! later, and when he’s not budging she’ll just remind him that he sold his soul to a devil anyway so maybe they really are perfect together. like just the concept of mizora meddling in wyll’s business and being so so annoying in the romance (which doesn’t even have to be durge romance tbh but I’m thinking of it in the wyves (wyll/yves) context lol) is such a missed opportunity imo. like she literally has a tracker on him she’s very aware of what’s going on and I refuse to accept that she won’t at least try to ruin the moment when there’s something romantic happening between wyll and durge.

and then you have wyll who chooses to believe their partner than to listen to the devil buzzing in his ear, the slow dread when he realises what mizora was hinting about durge was true when the act 3 reveal happens, and how proud he would have felt when he watched them deny bhaal and reclaim their own freedom because mizora had been so wrong about them.

also just because wyll is in a constant surveillance 24/7 imagine how uncomfortable it would’ve been for him trying to show his affections towards his partner when there’s a voice planting doubts in his ear whether it’s about his partner or himself. it’s an active effort from him to block her voice out and sometimes it won’t always work. so his affection comes out a bit restrained sometimes, a little held back, but then he doesn’t want his partner to worry so he puts a bit more performance but it pains him bc he knows that they deserved to be loved better than what he’s showing right now and he wants to love them better but he just can’t in that moment …

I’ve seen people in the TDP tags wondering about the mechanics/practicality of Claudia preserving her dad’s dead body for two whole years (while meeting and dating a remarkably open-minded elf boy, no less), and y’all, let’s just be Doylists for a second.  This is a retcon.

I’ve suspected for a while that the “Phase 2” production cycle took an unusually long time** not just because of pandemic complications, but mostly because the franchise went through some major restructuring post-s3, and this awkward retcon supports my suspicions on that front.  If it’d been planned this way from the start, Claudia wouldn’t have the exact same character model as before down to her hair length/style, nor would it include a slew of visual cues screaming “A Few Days After The Spire Battle!” for a very young audience to pick up on.  Claudia’s specific mention of Aaravos spinning his cocoon “two days ago” is also in keeping with TDP’s many (arguably ill-conceived) Biblical references, implying that Viren was dead for two days and resurrected on the third.

Now, why was this scene retconned when Viren’s quick resurrection and the two-year timeskip could totally coexist?  There could be some plot mechanics reasons, but I have a feeling that they mostly wanted an excuse to 1. establish Claudia and Terry’s relationship offscreen, without Viren around to complicate things, and 2. not totally overhaul Claudia and Viren’s character models.  Claudia’s going to have a cute braid later, sure, but that’s small potatoes compared with having to remodel the protagonist trio entirely.  It’s also very convenient to keep Viren in his plain white robe as long as possible.  Wonderstorm doesn’t have an infinite budget, so as appealing as it is to do a soft reboot timeskip, they��re probably compelled to cut corners wherever they can.

These new s4 clips bode much better for the rest of the series than I expected, so I’m really not saying all this to be a Negative Nancy.  I just think that, before discussing the Watsonian mechanics of this retcon, we ought to acknowledge that the creators probably aren’t secret geniuses who planned all along to confuse the nine-year-olds in the audience by only ~pretending~ to set the last scene of season 3 a couple days after the final battle.  Sometimes you just need to clumsily retcon stuff in order to do a soft reboot on your sprawling multimedia franchise that may or may not have gone into production with an incomplete/overly malleable series bible, and maybe that’s okay.  Or maybe it’s not okay and the creators have no idea what they’re doing, idk.  Time will tell.

**Since I’ve seen pushback on this before: based on their end-of-year update from Dec 2021, I know the creators would have fans believe that it’s ~very unusual~ to “work on multiple seasons simultaneously,” and that this is why Phase 2/seasons 4-6 took so long.  Respectfully, this is bullshit; TDP may release content in many short “seasons” in the vein of Netflix shows like VLD, but like VLD and most long animated series, the production cycle of about 25-27 episodes remains the same.  I don’t have a problem with them taking a pretty long time (like 2.5+ years??) to finish 27 episodes, but I wish they were more honest about why the delay happened.  Big, complex “waterfall”-style production cycles with a quick turnaround are the norm in animation and it’s unfair to other studios to pretend their own process is exceptionally intricate.
