so just got back home from tysons corner center where there were gunshots. some important reminders: do not post in social media your hiding location, do not get on social media until you are safe at home (comme moi), get out of mall, do not run with masses down the main store corridor but instead run into a store and get out thru the store’s emergency door (that is what the emergency door is for - for fire safety purposes, each store should have back exit), abandon your baby stroller if upstairs and carry your baby when running and climbing downstairs to get out of the mall, do not wait on the sidewalk in broad daylight next to entrance (do not block exit), if far from your car you should just run away (go across street or two streets - try to put some distance between you and the gunshots) and then grab an uber to get home (you can pick up your car later). shelter in place (hide and stay low) only at the last resort - when you are blocked from getting out.
i got separated from my sis - when i saw the people running, i immediately crouched low and headed to the back (running away from the main store aisle towards the narrower side aisles and trying to not be visible). she was trying to get a worker to close the store to save people to no avail (she is a better person than me as i was thinking save yourself and the rest will follow). i turned around when i heard her screaming for me (as i thought she was behind me) - she could not find me as i was scurrying down low thru racks of clothes. i rushed back to her and we ran back together. there was this woman with a huge stroller with her baby in it blocking the way. when i got to the back, people were crowded in this tiny room that had no exit. i yelled where’s the exit - where can we get out. no one said anything but my sis who located the emergency exit - she yelled to the people in front of us to open the door, that it was an emergency. we went out of the emergency door (which had no alarm - weird). my sis somehow overtook the people in front of us. i hurried down the stairs to the best of my ability (i have phobia of falling down stairs) and my sis directed me out to the garage (as an aside i also have a phobia of parking lots so i was slower as was very vigilant about not getting hit by cars that were all backing out). we got in our car and drove the wrong way (entrance lane) to get the hell out of the parking lot.
i realize i am like my sis as i did the same getting out of dc after the earthquake - drove thru parking lots and one-way street to get home instead of getting stuck in traffic. also i recall how eerily quiet it was - the only people yelling was me and my sis. no one was saying anything - everyone just huddled in this small windowless room which was so weird. there were very few people who went thru the emergency door and some went thru a door back to the lower level of the mall (!)). others who got outside just stood shell shocked by the main mall entrance, waiting to be told what to do.
i am trying to understand why my sis and i acted so differently from everyone else. like our survival instinct was really dominant. was it because of nam (how we ran for our lives to get evacuated)? was it because we were eyewitnesses to a shooting before? was it in our blood (my sis said vn people are ruthless - we have a long bloody history of guerrilla warfare)?

if you donate one single us dollar to the unrwa, you will have donated more money than you would have by clicking that stupid arab.orb link every day for four and a half years. yes, they do actually donate money to the unrwa, but even with tens of thousands of clicks, most of that money is the baseline $90 they send every quarter. from 2023 quarter 4, half a million clicks turned into $380.57. maths out to six hundreths of one cent per click. just donate to unrwa.

The thing I keep coming back to, with all the *gestures expansively* is that real life doesn't have peaceful epilogues.
Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I'm sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn't. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it's so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn't put in all that work for nothing, and you aren't, either. You can't save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There's no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.

your daily walks wrapped
you soaked up 10,985 minutes of sunshine, rain, and other weather
you walked past 4,073 individuals you would describe as the most beautiful person in the world
you bore witness to 23% more of your local area than last year—good job!
you saw 3 of the weirdest dogs you will ever see in your life
you noticed 18 people visibly, tenderly in love with each other
you smelled 243 flowering plants & shrubs
you drank 267 delicious beverages
you were kissed invisibly and imperceptibly by 117 bumble bees and butterflies
you were witness to 87,441,289 gorgeous leaves

soooo much of the modern conception of gender is based around products and consumerism that people can’t even identify actual misogyny anymore. People reply to posts “It’s sexist to hate on something so many women enjoy” and that something would be a Stanley cup

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :
Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources
Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)
Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women
Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women
Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)
Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)
Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community
Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS
Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough
Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media
Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards
Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories
Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")
And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue
Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

ONE HOUR AGO: greg abbott, who i have the great displeasure of calling my governor, is calling for the expulsion and jailing of ut austin students exercising their first amendment right to freedom of speech an assembly. every single motherfucker on the right soooo concerned about the first amendment seems to be creaming their pants over college students being brutalized and arrested for protesting. its fucking reprehensible.

There is a conversation to be had about the fact that Taylor Swift's album is being played in its entirety across all of iHeartRadio's 868 stations, pushing out the opportunities other artists might have had to get radioplay. That's the literal definition of a monopoly. No wonder she'll hit the top of the radio play charts with this maneuver, because at least 65 minutes (if not the back side of the album, which would take it to nearly twice that length) across EIGHT HUNDRED AND SIXTY EIGHT STATIONS will be dedicated to her, artificially boosting her radio play and decreasing everyone else's. In this essay I will—
