Japanese construction workers on Wednesday resumed landfill work at the new site of the U.S. military base on Okinawa despite protests by the island’s residents that the move tramples on their rights and raises environmental concerns.

The planned relocation site for the base, on Okinawa’s eastern coast, has been at the center of a dispute between the government in Tokyo and the local authorities at a time of the island’s growing strategic importance.[...]

Three weeks ago, the Fukuoka High Court’s Naha branch ordered Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki to approve the central government’s modified landfill plan, and allowed the Land and Transport Ministry to order the work to resume by overriding the governor’s disapproval.

On a barge brought to the location on Wednesday, a pair of loader machines scooped up mounds of rock and gravel and dumped them into the sea as part of reclamation needed to reinforce the extremely soft seabed at the site planned for U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Tamaki, who has appealed the order to the Supreme Court, said the court ruling was unjust and goes against the will of the residents. Under Japanese law, construction can proceed while the court decision is pending. He called the resumption of the landfill work “extremely regrettable.”[...]

Tamaki, the governor, has sought a significant reduction of the U.S. military on Okinawa, which is home to more than half of 50,000 American troops based in Japan under a bilateral security pact.

Hundreds of scholars, film directors and ordinary citizens who have advocated for Okinawans’ autonomy, signed a global petition demanding the island cease to be “a de facto military colony of the United States and Japan ever since the end of the World War II.”

One of the petition organizers, Satoko Norimatsu Oka who heads the Vancouver-based Peace Philosophy Center, provided a copy of the document to The Associated Press.

“We must end the discrimination and military colonization of Okinawa,” said the petitioners, who include filmmaker Oliver Stone.

The petition urged President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to “cancel the construction of the new base in Henoko.”

He can feel his eyes on the side of his face, like a brand that shifts under his skin. 

“Gene,” Snafu says again, like he couldn’t have heard him the first time. “Genie. Eugene.”

“Heard you the first time, Snaf.” Eugene says, when he’s getting tired of the gaze, unsettling and intense on the side of his face. 

The rain comes down in great sheets of quaking ocean, salt in the open, gashing wounds of Okinawan shell craters. 

He has his head bowed, trying to protect the half-empty can of beans that fills with rain quicker than he can eat them, and jolts slightly when Snafu’s bare, rain-soaked palm pushes at the back of his bare, rain-soaked shoulder.

“Jus’ one.” He says, and Eugene finally gives up on the beans, looking up and letting the rain fall into his eyes. He’s too used to it to even really notice the sting.

“No.” He says, and Snafu huffs.

The mud sloshes over Eugene’s already filth-dyed jungle boots and khakis as Snafu slides down the small hill, throwing out his arm entirely to wrap it around Eugene’s neck for balance.

“One more.” He says, wet and clammy and cold. Mud slides down Eugene’s collar, down his back. It would be repulsive if he felt anything, anymore. He huffs and drops the can.

“Nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.” He deadpans, and Snafu grins, wide and sharp. He turns his face up towards the rain, and Gene watches as the heavy drops of water slide down the column of his neck and pool at his collarbone.

“One more.” He says, again, and Eugene snorts, shoving the heel of his hand into his bony side. 

Snafu doesn’t laugh, but he exhales through his nose, leaving Eugene’s side easily and bouncing back even quicker, knocking shoulders with him. He’s quiet, and doesn’t say anything else, but Eugene looks down and thinks, anyway.

He can barely see his boots, swallowed by the mud. “God willin’ and the creek don’t rise.” He says, all at once, and Snafu’s pruney fingers come up to poke at the ball of his shoulder.

“Creek sure is risin’, right now.” He says, and Eugene shrugs against him. He’s almost cool relief, against the relentless humidity. 

(Almost.)

“Yeah,” He says, as Snafu’s fingers prod at the back of his neck, tugging through the short hairs at his nape. “But. I dunno. Maybe one day it’ll stop.”

Snafu’s fingers still. He leans closer, all wiry muscle and unsettling intensity.

“Yeah.” He says.

They both know that Eugene’s wrong.

A few days ago I published the image that Lea and I published last year that you can see here. This is the continuation of this years New Year.

Hiromi, you made the rock and roll symbol, not the rabbit symbol. Hiromi: I know, there are rabbits of all kinds. Gaaah! Oka: «Lately he's acting in a way that I like a lot too.» - thinking.

Kaoru: Why the hell did you have to put these damn bunny ears on me? I'm not a rabbit! Kojiro: Now yes. And here we have Oka taking a "photo" reminder of the day, he didn't want to be in the group photo because he wasn't dressed for the occasion, but he promised Hiromi that they would take a photo when they met at the temple. Later, though, he went to change to head to the temple for the first visit of the year.

In this way Kojiro and Kaoru are "fighting" among themselves for "the role" they have been given. *4 ぴょんぴょん (pyon pyon) Japanese onomatopoeia of the jumping rabbit. In addition Reki, Kojiro, Langa and Miya with their hands are making the shape of rabbit ears.

Higa Family

Higa family is composed of three members, Hiromi, the son, Hiroki, his father, and Hitomi, his mother. The parents live in a traditional Okinawan house, while Hiromi lives in a small apartment located more towards the center of city.

Many of the characters are constantly changing, such as hair, eyes, facial features, to make them look more like the canon, but keeping our way of making sims, so the appearance may vary a little over time. We will reblog when some change is made.

Hiromi is son of Hiroki and Hitomi Higa. He works in a flower shop full time and as a good flower lover is a fan of outdoors, loves to go for walks and explore new routes to find species of flowers that doesn't know, which he photographs and keeps in a diary.

He's a romantic and dreams of the perfect date, that date with the special person, which surely is not going to be the manager… or at least not the one at the flower shop…. He's a very nice and sweet person when is on his job and wherever he goes everyone who knows him in the store welcomes him with open arms. Being in a flower shop facing public, is very observant and knows very well the people who come there. In the future he would like to make a barbecue for his friends since is an expert in making that kind of food.

He's a very careful prankster but only does it to people he trusts a lot and the ones he frequents in Crazy Rock. Sometimes his pranks are a bit noisy because he likes to scare people with firecrackers (especially in Crazy Rock).

From a very young age he knows how to clean house very quickly, his mother taught him to keep his own place clean, although sometimes due to lack of time he leaves it as it is…

Whenever he can goes to the gym and does weights and boxing, that's why he has such developed muscles, based on doing sports, and the one he loves the most is skateboarding.

He also likes video games, especially those that have to do with flowers and rock music. And although likes rock music, he isn't a great lover of Jazz. He has private moments of relaxation either painting, or being in the garden.

In S he's known as Shadow, an arrogant, conceited and foul-mouthed guy, the opposite of Hiromi who is a kind, polite and responsible boy. We could say that he himself is the Yin and Yang. At night he's dark and "evil" and during the day he's "transparent" and very good, (although sometimes he gets on the guys' nerves). Being Shadow he can throw firecrackers at everyone and say bad-sounding words to men and women alike, even picking on children, as he calls himself the anti-hero. Its special attack is Gladiolus Laser.

When he had a skateboarding confrontation with Reki, he beat him and because of that victory Reki broke his arm. When he beat him Shadow burned his skateboard, feeling neither remorse nor sadness for him. We can say that although Shadow and Hiromi are the same person, they look like two sides of the same coin.

Although as it can see Shadow is how he would really like to be as Hiromi, but hiding and avoiding it because of society's "fault", since it isn't well seen that an adult skateboarding and go dressed as they want, much less with lack of education and respect for others to feel angry. Following unwritten rules of conduct for adults: 17 is the prime of life, have as much fun as you can, because when adulthood comes all kinds of fun should be suppressed and distanced to focus only on the obligations of life, including work and family *. A rule that isn't wrong at all, if it isn't obligatory and an individual chooses it by choice.

*(P.S.: None of us on this blog are agree with these unwritten rules when it is imposed or self-imposed because of society).

Hitomi is Hiroki's wife and Hiromi's mother. She's a somewhat melancholic woman, when Hiromi was little, she was about to lose her husband, luckily everything went well and Hiromi's father was able to see him grow up, but she still thinks about what happened and always tries to make her husband eat healthy food, which he doesn't like very much.

She's a born sportswoman, when was pregnant with Hiromi, used to run on the treadmill non-stop, and now she goes to the gym to keep fit. As she says, age is no impediment to doing sports.

She's a great friend of her friends and whenever she can goes to the gym with them or goes shopping.

Hitomi loves animals and is trying to convince her husband to adopt a cat or a dog, now that Hiromi has moved into an apartment.

She likes DJ music very much, listens to it the most at home and when she goes to gym wears her headphones listening to that style of music. She once played the piano and liked it so much that in the near future would like to take free lessons.

The decorations Hitomi likes are simple and natural courtyard decorations with lots of greenery. In such decorations orange is her least favorite color in large quantities.

Hiroki is Hitomi's husband and Hiromi's father. He's a vegetarian, and although he eats "healthy" food, he often likes to eat not so healthy food. For example, he eats too many nuts, which give him too much sugar and too much salt. Since childhood he has been very paranoid, has always thought that people talk about him, but in spite of everything he has always kept it to himself. He's a great lover of art, likes to go to museums and likes to learn everything that catches his attention.

The music he likes the most is electronic music, likes to listen to it while watching art or fishing, two of his favorite hobbies.

The only decoration he wouldn't like in his house is the island, as well as the color red, he says it would be too strong as a wall color.

About my job: I have an English degree with minors in creative writing and Japanese, and I am going to start my M.Ed this coming spring semester. I'm going to be vague when I talk about my job for my protection but I'm an academic instructor for an Indigenous nonprofit and I work with middle/high schoolers.

I will never say any students' names, show any of their work (I do not like when people share pictures of their students' work on the internet to make fun of them), and I will never speak badly about a student here.

About me: I'm Okinawan and a hafu, and I live in the US. I love knitting and have a small knitting business (I also crochet for this business), I read a lot, and I play video games often with my twin (we are very close!). I'm a butch lesbian and I want to be the queer educator that I wish I had. My pronouns are uncertain currently but I'm trying they/them. :) I live in a very conservative state and I was called a faggot in high school and I just never felt safe to be who I am, so I really want to be a safe person for these kids to talk to. Also back to video games, I love Deep Rock Galactic it's my favorite game. I'm also currently into Ooblets. :) And I do bodybuilding five days a week!

also, in regards to that last reblog, i was curious so i went searching for a way to chrck artist or song genres on spotify and like. all you have to do is pop in gackt or buck tick to see that not every band is classified as j pop. they're called j rock or j metal (gackt was also under okinawan pop) but in japan, also, they'll refer to western music under a western label unless its like classic rock or huge-name artists or bands. and please do not get me started on how japanese rock and metal have their own sound that does deserve to be recognized. i do think they should be under the regular rock and metal genres on spotify, though, which they dont currently seem to be.

Her first memory is of being cradled by the ocean waves. The water was warm and calm, but not completely still. A woman with the most beautiful blue eyes she'd ever seen smiled down at her. She sang and rocked her until she fell back asleep.

Galene had been in a relationship with David and Misako long before Ushi had been born. The goddess and the mortal pair raised their little girl together on the island of Okinawa. Ushi could swim before she could walk. Her first word was umi- ocean. By the time she was five, she told everyone she met about how much she wanted to be an oceanographer.

Another thing happened when she was five: Galene gave birth to Kamado. Ushi took to being a bi sister with gusto. Her family's move to the US a year later to help out her paternal grandparents? Who lived far away from the ocean? Less so. Still, Ushi adjusted to the changes as well as she could. Soon, she was almost as happy as she was in Okinawan.

Then her parents died.

The police told her that the other car hit her parents. That it came out of nowhere. There was nothing they could have done. And at that moment, Ushi knew two things were certain:

That the real culprit had been a monster disguised by the Mist, and

That someday, perhaps very soon, their grandmother was going to die, and it would be Ushi's responsibility to take care of her sister.

It was a lot for a 10-year-old to take, but Ushi plugged on as best as she could. She begged her grandmother to let her help with the family rituals. After school, Ushi studied deeper into the Greek myths and the ways of warding against danger. And that's when she discovered Hestia, goddess of the hearth.

Like Hestia, Ushi was the oldest girl in her household. She was the calm, friendly, responsible one who wanted to keep her family happy and safe. She helped keep the hearth lit- in the Higa's case, the hinukan in the kitchen where her grandmother would communicate with their ancestors. Ushi didn't go to CHB like Kamado or go on adventures with her friends. Ushi stayed home and made sure things were taken care of, especially as her grandmother's health waned. Although Ushi left her pet pigs behind in Okinawa, she pretended like the stone shisa guarding the entrance to her home were her pets. On the day her grandmother died, Ushi found a charm with Hestia's symbol, the hearth, at the hinukan.

When her family home is destroyed and the shisa come to life, Ushi takes Hestia's charm and heads to CHB for answers.

The 10 Precepts of Anko Itosu

In 1908, Anko Itosu, the Okinawan master responsible for introducing karate to schools on Okinawa, wrote a letter in which laid out 10 precepts for the study of karate. The precepts remain relevant to our study today and highlight that there is a difference between the child's art taught in schools (and often the foundation of the arts taught in the US), and the deeper meaning and intent of Okinawan karate. Itosu was a direct student of Bushi Matsumura, the founder of the Shorin Ryu and Hakutsuru systems.

Note, there is some historical context necessary to understand some of Itosu's points. When he started teaching karate in schools, the intent was to improve the health of students and to provide a clear and efficient path to those students joining the Japanese military - which was important at that point in Japan's history.

Below is the translation of the relevant part of Itosu's 1908 letter.

Karate did not develop from Buddhism or Confucianism. In the past the Shorin-ryu school and the Shorei-ryu school were brought to Okinawa from China . Both of these schools have strong points and I therefore list them below just as they are without embellishment.

 1. Karate is not merely practiced for your own benefit; it can be used to protect one's family or master. It is not intended to be used against a single assailant but instead as a way of avoiding injury by using the hands and feet should one by any chance be confronted by a villain or ruffian.

 2. The purpose of karate is to make the muscles and bones hard as rock and to use the hands and legs as spears. If children were to begin training naturally in military prowess while in elementary school, then they would be well suited for military service. Remember the words attributed to the Duke of Wellington after he defeated Napoleon, "Today's battle was won on the playing fields of our schools".

 3. Karate cannot be quickly learned. Like a slow moving bull, it eventually travels a thousand leagues. If one trains diligently for one or two hours every day, then in three or four years one will see a change in physique. Those who train in this fashion will discover the deeper principles of karate.

 4. In karate, training of the hands and feet are important, so you should train thoroughly with a sheaf of straw (#). In order to do this, drop your shoulders, open your lungs, muster your strength, grip the floor with your feet, and concentrate your energy into your lower abdomen. Practice using each arm one to two hundred times each day.

 5. When you practice the stances of karate, be sure to keep your back straight, lower your shoulders, put strength in your legs, stand firmly, and drop your energy into your lower abdomen.

 6. Practice each of the techniques of karate repeatedly. Learn the explanations of every technique well, and decide when and in what manner to apply them when needed. Enter, counter, withdraw is the rule for torite.

 7. You must decide if karate is for your health or to aid your duty.

 8. When you train, do so as if on the battlefield. Your eyes should glare, shoulders drop, and body harden. You should always train with intensity and spirit as if actually facing the enemy, and in this way you will naturally be ready.

 9. If you use up your strength to excess in karate training, this will cause you to lose the energy in your lower abdomen and will be harmful to your body. Your face and eyes will turn red. Be careful to control your training.

 10. In the past, many masters of karate have enjoyed long lives. Karate aids in developing the bones and muscles. It helps the digestion as well as the circulation. If karate should be introduced, beginning in the elementary schools, then we will produce many men each capable of defeating ten assailants.

If the students at teacher training college learn karate in accordance with the above precepts and then, after graduation, disseminate this to elementary schools in all regions, within 10 years karate will spread all over Okinawa and to mainland Japan. Karate will therefore make a great contribution to our military. I hope you will seriously consider what I have written here - Anko Itosu, October 1908

hi :) i run a small fiber arts business called Fireweed Fiber Arts! I'm located in Alaska and I sell on Etsy, at events, and sometimes I'm open for commissions. Currently I sell amigurumi plushies, knit and crochet earrings, marble fidgets, etc. I also love making garments and hope to sell them someday soon as well! I'd also love to try selling patterns, which is something I have never tried before but would like to try.

The idea for the music of this song was influenced by '60s Okinawan psychedelic rock music, '70s Japanese pop ballads, and our love for the beautiful arrangements of music by Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vanier. The song wasn’t initially written for TEKE::TEKE per se, it was just an idea I had… but when I showed the skeleton of the song to Maya, she immediately felt inspired and started writing. The song’s lyrics touch on themes of duality, identity, and nostalgia.

A Stay

Evening

My body is cracking more than I imagined lol

Today I had lunch in Okinawa, and I had a bit of time to buy souvenirs,

I was able to do it with ease!

Immediately after getting back, my memories of yesterday and today in Okinawa, it seems like it was a long time ago but,

Maybe its the feeling of being back in reality...... lol

Its not my first time in Okinawa but,

I've never been into town so, I'm happy

I was worrying over what I should do for souvenirs but, I was thinking that I like things like, Sata Andagi, and Chinsukou, but I've had them,

I was looking for something that I haven't had before,

There was a wonderful general store,

It sold a variety of cute things, made from traditional Okinawan roof tiles

The shop worker said that there wasn't any SNS or online shop, so it felt like, this! is it!, and I bought them--

Like I was talking to myself in the store, Eeh, this is also cute, nah but this is too, wait, this is cute too, I ended up talking like that the whole time lol

The volume of my voice was getting ridiculous so,

my talking to myself was no longer talking to myself,

When they noticed the shop worker came over to help me a lot lol

They gave an explanation about the store, and said like, you can just look around to kill time~, I was worried, but it seemed like they were enjoying watching over me lol

I was being too indecisive......

I was happy to buy something but,

I had a fun time in the store, getting souvenirs in Okinawa

It was warm, in Okinawa!

Also the weather  was good and really hot!

I also got to see, a lot of the cute faces of all of the members

their faces eating something delicious and their faces in high spirits,

ngl, I've been thinking about an AU of Yakuza 3 where daigo is a bit more ruthless and refuses to save Morning Glory immediately....for the flavour. For the Kiryu!angst of abandoning one child's growth and development in order to prioritize another. For the minedai.

I also think it gets Kiryu involved in the whole plot a lot better than Kazama's twin and Black Monday, for Daigo to say that he'll only save Morning Glory if Kiryu does something else for him: figure out who's trying to usurp him in the Tojo Clan! And Kiryu gets dragged back into the mess in order to save the orphanage, but it's far more reluctantly.

And then having to come to terms with the fact that Daigo is a good Chairman of the Tojo Clan—but that means being a bastard, because the yakuza IS bad. I don't know how much it would meaningfully change of the Yakuza 3 plot, but I just want Daigo to have a bit more going for him. Also if Daigo gets shot halfway through Yakuza 3, after asking Kiryu to help him, Kiryu finally realizes it isn't just Daigo being a manipulative bastard to get him back in the family—it was a move of desperation, and it came from the fact Daigo didn't know how to ask him for help honestly...

Anyway. I want Kiryu and Daigo to have a more tumultuous family relationship. I also think Haruka being more demanding about the needs of Morning Glory too would be very fun....
