Tumblr media
rob. bro. YOU KEEP DOING THIS and you get bodied EVERY SINGLE TIME. he seems like he's the calm rational one but he's…really not
vs fulgrim he did the exact same thing even going "i know it's a trap" and he would have died except the ultramarines ended up sacrificing themselves to get him out vs mortarion he did it like TWICE and only dad intervening got him out of that i don't actually remember what happens to him here but he does get stabbed
oh here's the part that made me like Lorgar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"it's called treachery, Roboute. It works very well." it sure does lol
Tumblr media
lorgar talks a bit about Horus rising (heh) and Guilliman asks if he's on drugs
Tumblr media
brother, singular the only one down so far is Ferrus, rip Lorgar once again, really wishing the only people who thought "hey the emperor is wrong and awful, maybe" didn't drink the chaos kool aid
Hot take : the imperium and chaos represent the false dichotomy presented by the modern right left political divide
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then things get…fun
it's also, incidentally, really interesting that Lorgar is like "we're here to kill you and take the Ultramarines out of the game" and meanwhile Kor Phaeron tries to corrupt him to chaos i do wonder what would have happened if they'd ended up on the same side well i mean, wouldn't be the first time two people with grudges ended up on same side (Magnus and Mortarion) but it's gotten reallllly personal here
actually wait no i forgot about how he got sent into the vacuum of space and then just managed to survive because he was so angry so like, that really should have worked but no one expected the plot armour guillirage
you know i think he might be the most plot armoured of all local accountant who evades taxes somehow the main character of the universe (yes he does canonically evade taxes) (i found out) (so my record of tax evading blorbos holds steady) (i think the only one who doesn't is maybe Windblade) okay spooky time and i really loved this bit for fully bringing the story out of the regular war/disaster and right into the twilight zone as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh THATS how he ends up in space
my original hc (re Lorgar and daemon) was that they switched out at the end and the daemon climbing out of lorgar's skin was a metaphysical metaphor made literal over the comm link idk if that's actually possible though
and now back to our Catholic representation, Old Person Oll Persson he's having a nice morning but some dude just showed up i remember when i read this i was like ???????? didn't he just die or something??
Tumblr media
honestly i found this whole thing very confusing but apparently it's a meta plot in the Horus Heresy wrong word myth arc? also wrong plot thread that shows up across multiple books
ohhh time to get a look at the future
Tumblr media
there's like 50 books or more that were written between this one and this actual scene happening and somehow i have zero memory of reading this??? i think i was still going ??? at the secret group of immortals eyy time to put together a team that's just made up of random people who happened to survive
including a catatonic teenage girl and another unskilled labourer honestly this would work better in another series or if this were about them
Tumblr media
man you know it's funny how in every way the word bearers are the precursor to the imperium aw lorgar is making special copies of his book for all his brothers
star wars: we blew up one planet to smithereens kor phaeron: you are like little baby, watch this
Tumblr media
oh yeah here we goooo the bit that made me lol (for context, he's talking about seeing corpses with bits eaten)
Tumblr media
i was like "i didn't think you people HAD the concept of a war crime" okay, mr ventanus, how do you justify monarchia, by any of these codes and precepts by any legality by the moral code of mankind in the end it was just "the emperor ordered you to do it, and he is the highest authority, so, you did it" like i do realize the two aren't equivalent and the sheer level of destruction that was done to Calth isn't anywhere in the same league not to mention the corpse desecration and offscreen torture etc but regardless Monarchia is also not justified by these things also, this is a very fun chase scene aw yeah Tawren and Arook meet up with Ventanus and Selachon
Tumblr media
oh hello stab me in the heart again why don't you
ooooh horror movie on Maccrage's Honour ultramarine feels fear rip Gage, his hand gets bit off by daemon AND NOW FOR MY FAVOURITE SCENE IN THIS BOOK (well tied for favourite with the lorgar one)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE THIEL SO MUCH
Tumblr media
"today started in a different place" UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR today started in an entirely different genre
i am platonically kissing thiel on the mouth hahaha and now we find out WHY thiel was censured
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmaooo incredible
this whole bit still cracks me up the first time i read this i thought for sure he was getting lured by a lorelei to his death
well actually i hit another bit that cracks me up the two army dudes, in all the chaos met the young dudes wife by the river except well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then they get caught by word bearer auxiliaries sacrificing people and i thought for sure they were going to die there and then Old Person saves the day and the ritual knife on this rando cultist turns out to apparently be a big deal like universe altering e_e okay maybe im misremembering maybe it's a different knife okay i am misremembering
okay we got a date for Monarchia! 44 years ago

BYGGET // The building work
Katrineholms konsthall 2/4 – 21/5 2022
A large-scale sculpture installation project. A collaborative exhibition between MASU and artists Tova Fransson and Olle Halvars.
The overall theme, collaboration and programming was designed by curator Gustav Persson and art pedagogue Synnöve Pohjola .
We started our construction work two days before the opening and from April 2nd to April 27th we were on site 12 days working with the sculpture and running workshops, participating in talks, lectures, gatherings and readings. We worked both parallel to, and in collaboration with Tova and Olle and the exhibition formed and developed, changed and was programmed as we all worked in the space.
Our installation work consists of 150 wooden latches (45x45mm, 420 cm long) joined together with screws, and 1500 wooden laths (22x22mm, 180cm long) joined with black cable ties, black Posca markers for pattern. We worked with a drawing method with the material in the space; starting somewhere / anywhere and adding lines of wood over, and in the space. The process is open-ended and we work slow in constant dialogue letting the structure move, meander, expand and reach in a dynamic movement in the space.
It was very rewarding for us to work indoors in a large space which made it possible for us to reach higher to really be able to create vertical layers of spatiality where visitors could enter and be within the structure and look up through it and there was still space above.
Our project also contained a collaboration with the exhibition visitors who were given black Posca markers to draw patterns on the wood, both the stacked material waiting as well as directly on to the installation. This added a layer of graphic information that grew over time.
In contrast to our wood structure installation, Tova and Olle continuously added printed fabric, from their workshops and graphic sewing work to the space which created a vibrant exhibition space that changed every day giving both us and the visitors new experiences of participating in the exhibition. Olle and Tova’s workshop drew a lot of people into the exhibition hall thru printing workshops, which in combination with the programming of lectures, performances, music, poetry, film screening and yoga (to name a few) created a truly dynamic and attended exhibition (rumors say 500+ visitors on opening day alone).

one piece of 40k lore tidbit that won't leave my mind because of how many unfortaunte implications it has for one guy.
So we know how bad some of the perpatuals lore when they are connected to real life. Like the MLK assassination (I not fucking kidding about that one either) but this about Oll Persson tidbit I saw. It was from a story called 'unmarked' and this bit of him seeing his past and old lives he had which is good until we reach this bit.
"He hears an old friend in a Dresden shop, chatting as he packs china in newspaper, ‘in case the planes come tonight’."
This is a reference to the bombing of Dresden, Germany which was during WW2. Nazi Germany to be exact.
Now this is just a quick thing that can pass you by but sweet Jesus this has so many unfortaunte implications for Oll mostly cause of why the fuck he was in Nazi Germany in the first place.

New Interview & Photo Shoot!  Alex photographed by Johan Sandberg and interviewed by Timothy Small for L’Uomo Vogue (October 2020)!
Alexander Skarsgård: the photo shoot and interview for L'Uomo
BY TIMOTHY SMALL, JOHAN SANDBERG 25 SEPTEMBER 2020
Alexander Skarsgård is a really, really nice man. A Swede through and through, Alexander, or Alex, is a very down-to-earth gentleman who could definitely act as more of a big shot, considering he is also one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood right now, a town that, in true Swedish style, he once defined as “kind of silly”. After getting his first big break as the lead in David Simon's excellent Iraq War mini-series for HBO, Generation Kill, Skarsgård exploded in our collective imaginations as Eric Northman in True Blood, while also acting for Lars von Trier in the wonderful Melancholia.
Since then, he has been a very buff Tarzan in The Legend of Tarzan, a mute bartender in future Berlin in Mute, a very dark killer in Hold the Dark, and a hilarious Canadian Prime Minister in Long Shot, as well as giving an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning turn in HBO's Big Little Lies. The self-defined “restless” 43-year-old is set to star in The Northman, Robert Eggers's highly anticipated third film, a “Viking revenge story” that Skarsgård himself was crucial in bringing to production – and, by all accounts, it seems like it could have all the right pieces to become a future cult classic. It certainly has that kind of hype.
L'Uomo Vogue:  The Northman is such an interesting project. I know it's important to you. It's also part of a growing resurgence of interest in the Viking era and Norse mythology and that sort of epic Scandinavian adventure. How did it all begin?
Alex:  It all started seven or eight years ago. As a Swede living in America, I realised there was a certain level of fascination with the Viking era and Viking culture – and this was before any of the Viking shows that have since happened. It made me realise that there basically had never been a real great epic Viking movie made, and I thought that that's what I wanted to do.
LV:  So how did the project kick off?
Alex:  I started having conversations with a studio back then, trying to crack the best story. All I knew at the time is that I wanted to make a big Viking movie. We had a couple of potential different starting points: we had a story about two brothers, and then one about the Viking travels down to Constantinople with the Viking siege of the city. We were looking for the right story, but I never really felt we were there. I knew the scope I wanted it to exist in. But what was the story?
LV:  And that's when you met Robert Eggers.
Alex:  Yes, like three or four years ago. We met about something else. I can't remember how, but we started talking about Vikings. And he was, like me, a huge fan of Viking culture and of that historical era, and I immediately felt he would be the perfect guy to direct this movie. And then we found an author and poet in Iceland, Sjón, who came onboard to write the screenplay – and they did a fantastic job, just cracking the story and the essence of it.
LV:  Sounds great.
Alex:  It's a real adventure movie, but it's much more. It taps into the culture, and the mysticism of the Vikings, it becomes more intimate and more personal. I didn't want it to be a generic “swords-and-sandals” movie. Robert is one of the best filmmakers out there. And the whole process is so much more gratifying than when you're quote-unquote “just an actor”. It's been truly extraordinary.
LV:  But then you had to halt production.
Alex:  Yeah. I was in Belfast, Northern Ireland, three months into prep on The Northman about seven days away from principal photography. Just gearing up, you know, getting ready to start a very long, very intense shoot -- a shoot that we were scheduled to wrap in July – and that's when the virus hit.
LV:  What did you do then?
Alex:  I normally live in New York, while my family lives in Stockholm. When the first wave came, I was on the fence: nobody really knew how long it would be, or what precisely was going on. So we shut down production for six weeks. The idea was to then see what would happen. I basically moved to Stockholm for four months.
LV:  How do you feel about this forced break from work?
Alex:  I had not been home for this long in... more than 20 years. It was strange. We were in a bubble; we were all healthy and safe. In a lot of ways, I had moments when I felt being surrounded by my loving family, feeling safe and loved, and taking a break from work, but then also feeling very guilty because I was, for the lack of a better term, being spared.
LV:  In the past, you've described yourself as being a nomad. Did you miss Sweden and the North?
Alex:  I realised how much I have been missing it. I go to Sweden regularly, but usually only for three or four days, maybe a week, tops. My father and two of my brothers are actors, so we're used to never being in the same city. We all travel all over the world. Maybe we'd get back together for Christmas. And I can really say that I had missed spring in Sweden.
LV:  Do you think we will change the way movies are produced?
Alex:  We're going to have to figure out how to shoot movies with dozens of crew members and hundreds of extras while still respecting social distancing rules. It's an unprecedented situation and everyone is scrambling to figure out the best approach. My brother was one of the first people who worked in our industry during the pandemic. He shot a movie in Iceland in the middle of the lockdown. The way they solved it is they split the crew into colour sections. So, hair and make-up had yellow armbands and the camera department had blue, and they had a “Corona appointee” on set who would call out, “Now blue go in!” and then “Blue, out! And yellow, in!” And then they would all do their job in turns. It was very military-like. Productions are already complicated, so we'll just have to add another layer.
LV:  How did you become an ambassador to the Clarks brand?
Alex:  To me, authenticity is very important. I don't want to endorse products I don't genuinely like. That's why I was excited when Clarks reached out. I've been wearing Desert Boots for 25 years. Also, I like to travel a lot. I like to explore new cities by foot. I want to be able to walk around comfortably in a classic, iconic shoe. I travel from movie set to movie set, and I often live out of a suitcase. And this teaches you to be frugal. Whatever fits in that suitcase, that's all I can bring.
LV:  Is that the Swede in you?
Alex:  Maybe. But we consume way too many things in this society. Also, you give things more meaning when you live with them, and when you go on adventures with them. Like, these are my boots. I've been places with them. And when they fall apart, I'll buy a new pair. If you have the right stuff to begin with, you don't need more.
LV:  Going back to The Northman, that really sounds like a dream project.
Alex:  It is. It will be a rollercoaster ride. I can't wait to get back to Northern Ireland and get back to the production. It's also a very physically demanding project, so I have been training for, well, since a few months before production stopped.
LV: In a way, getting into a role, getting on a movie set, acting through it, the whole process of making a movie is a bit like a little adventure. You have to prep, you have to travel, often with people you don't know, and you have to push boundaries.
Alex:  Absolutely! A huge part of the appeal of this profession is you get to travel, and you meet amazing, interesting people from all over. And the uncertainty, you know? What was it, 12 years ago, I was in New York, and I'd never heard of Generation Kill. And then two days later I was on a plane to the Kalahari Desert to be out there for seven months to shoot the series. And I'll never forget the feeling, sitting on that plane, thinking, “Two days ago I didn't even know about this project, and here I am on my way to Southern Africa to spend seven months in the desert with 200 strangers.” It's very exciting.
LV:  What a feeling that must be!
Alex:  And every single job is like that. Every movie is different. Your part, the tone, the energy, the people – it's always different. And for someone like myself, who has that kind of wanderlust, who's always looking on the horizon, it's very attractive to never know just what the next adventure might be.

Know No Fear 1
so! it's gonna be fun rereading this now that i have a lot more knowledge about what on earth is going on so as i think i mentioned originally this one is written in a much more experimental style, sometimes it worked! A lot of the time…it didn't but i do remember this one being very much a "disaster movie" type of thing and also partially found footage maybe? I'm not going to post as much about it since it's, well, not as brainworm inducing but this is some very fun horror in the opening
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it goes into a bit of detail about their deaths in a successfully horrifying way and I like it, I really feel like this whole sequence does a great job of setting the tone for the book which is, this very kind of organized way of looking at the world that Guilliman and the Ultramarines have, the regular kind of disaster and evaluation etc and then also there's these horrible unknowable things (daemons) that have invaded this world as part of the disaster
so, something i find funny is that consistently the Ultramarines are shooketh because the idea of Space Marines fighting each other is inconceivable to them "the idea is nonsense" "there is no tactical precedent" this is a repeated element and meanwhile over in A Thousand Sons, the SW and the TS are like thiiiis close to attacking each other the whole time and iirc there is some violence done lol not to mention the uh historical precedent of purging two legions
OWO MY BLORBO IS HERE
Tumblr media
Iax mention oh hey in 10k years it's gonna turn into a battle ground!
Tumblr media
ow that hurts because in the Horus-centric books we start to see him trying to move beyond this and thinking independently and perhaps…becoming a better person and then he gets stabbed by evil knife
skldfsdhkjfl ONE PARAGRAPH used the word "bastard"…let me count 5 times dan abnett: i need to swear but i'm not allowed to use the word "fuck" dan abnett: bastard can be used as an adjective right? this has to be read to be believed
Tumblr media
wait i missed the last one SIX "bastard"s
Tumblr media
okay these were fine but like the entire first 20% of the book (iirc) had scenes that ended with this kind of thing and it kind of got to the point of "okay, when is this actually gonna start" i'll see if it holds up better than it did in my memory i will say i do like how Abnett does try to get in a lot of views on the ground level, with ordinary people's POVs but also I remember being like GET TO THE POINT especially in the sample for Prospero Burns
Tumblr media
i mean framing a war of conquest as "a necessary step taken for survival" sure is an absolute wonder of propaganda but also, really, how was the emperor planning on getting rid of them lmao
Tumblr media
me, looking at Guilliman and sniffing you are so naive but like did guilliman look at how the space marines are created, like, at all???
who looks at that and thinks "ah yes they will pivot to do non violence things" i didn't really fully realize the extent of this when i originally read this also man imagine this guilliman waking up in the 41st millenium like "lol. lmao" and then there's his entire attitude of "the emperor doesn't make mistakes, im sure thing clear flaw actually had a purpose"
even the ultramarines are kind of like "we love you but you're being overly optimistic here"
me looking at the timeline like ???? was literally NO ONE from the loyalist side able to get through to Guilliman?? and this is before the Ruinstorm, the whole book is about how the Ruinstorm happened there's something like at least a full year between Istvaan V and Calth and Dorn and Terra knew about Horus before then because the Eisenstein got through and then over in Scars we got him (Dorn) repeatedly spamming Jaghatai with messages to make sure at least one got through
…man, i didn't get it the first time, but i'm eyes emoji that guilliman has under the table freedom of religion in ultramar Old Person Oll Persson is openly a Catheric and goes to a chapel with some of his neighbours and the worst he gets is some of his other neighbours in the area laughing at him (edited) and the chapel isn't a secret or anything hm. you know, logically, given that the nascent imperial faith is able to create miracles you'd think there'd have been more miracles popping up in the face of the great crusade you're trying to stamp out religions. that's literally the kind of situation that creates martyrs.
also, you're telling me there were zero societies doing daemon worship that decided to summon them in the course of the conquest? well they could try to push it under the rug like the whole samus incident but it's not so much the effect on the space marines and imperium I'm thinking about, but on the people being conquered. You have your miracles or your daemon summoning, or whatever, you have tangible, visible proof that your faith is real the iterators with their dollar store arguments are going to find it extremely difficult to make a real dent in that
once again, when examined, the imperium having as much cohesion as it does in canon, makes absolutely zero sense
I respect that Warhammer40k is 100% aesthetic first, making sense second, but also I think you COULD very much keep the aesthetic while still having things make more sense like having a whole bunch of different empires and independent entities you could up the despair by having everyone embroiled in wars with each other as much as they're fighting Chaos
or people who genuinely think Chaos is the better of two evils to ally with against the Imperium i think also this would work really well for guilliman's return because he totally would see it as a priority to reconquer all the worlds from the great crusade
Tumblr media
oh hey look at that it's the future doctrine of the imperium
Tumblr media
and that's his take on it
you know, given the codex and reverence with which guilliman's writings are held you know i'm pretty sure he is the base for 40k imperial doctrine he's appalled by it but at its root, it's this he keeps walking the exact same steps as the emperor his primary objection is "you're making the wrong sacrifices" and he is unable to step out of the paradigm just like the emperor nothing he builds will outlast him, and also depends on him making the correct decision 100% of the time
oh boy it's time for the guilliman description
Tumblr media
i just really love the line "like a good sword is handsome"
Tumblr media
i feel like at some point i should read one of the space wolf books because i cannot get a straight answer about Russ and I don't actually trust anyone's reading comprehension here it's also fun how Guilliman is an unreliable narrator w.r.t. the nature/personality of his brothers haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like this bit here
ah oof the next paragraph is pain after reading dark imperium, given all the bits that are like "for all his other talents guilliman is, at his base, a sword"
Tumblr media
also people actually laugh at his jokes in the Heresy-era rip future!Guilliman
sjkdfhsd I love how when the chapter masters raise their eyebrows at him because he's going to handle Thiel's reprimand he's like "ok yes i know i'm micromanaging but i've already had several meetings that could have been emails with Erebus and I'm going to have to deal with him in PERSON and micromanaging is my stress relief okay" the chapter masters, all being familiar with erebus, agree that this is fair, lmao
"hur dur space marines competing and clashing is all part of the emperor's vision, his sons will always stop things before they go too far"
also i love how they refer to Monarchia and reframe it as a "humiliation" rather than, you know, a war crime it's a humiliation to lorgar and the word bearers what? the people living in there? i don't know her our ultramarine who is friends with a word bearer is like "it clearly bothered Guilliman to be used as an instrument of humiliation" but still. Even Guilliman who is the "good one" is very much an aristocrat the only way Monarchia matters is as a humiliation to the people that matter
rip Luciel though
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ahhhhh delicious delicious dramatic irony IT SURE WILL, HUH
(I'm not going to post as much about this one, I said, like a liar)

We develop a model where party leaders choose the competence of politicians on the ballot to trade off electoral success against their own survival. The predicted correlation between the competence of party leaders and followers is strongly supported in Swedish data. We use a novel approach , based on register data for the earnings of the whole population , to measure the competence of all politicians in 7 parties , 290 municipalities , and 10 elections (for the period 1982-2014). We ask how competence was affected by a zipper quota , requiring local parties to alternate men and women on the ballot , implemented by the Social Democratic Party in 1993. Far from being at odds with meritocracy , this quota raised the competence of male politicians where it raised female representation the most. We argue that resignation of mediocre male leaders was a key driver of this effect.
