Choose Love! The Art of compassion.
Tumblr media
In these strange and uncertain times it is easy to become apathetic towards the hardships of other people. We might feel that we don't have the space in ourselves to allow the problems of others into our lives, afterall life as we know it has become a minefield of our own worries; rules that must be obeyed and confusion around what is expected from us and what will happen in the future. Worse still is we have learnt to be weary of others, to keep our diatance, to report our neighbours who do not comply, to stay away from our loved ones and to trust nobody. We helplessly place our lives in the hands of people who are seemingly as clueless as we are.
But we must resist! We must not become a society devoid of love and compassion, we can not allow fear to be the driving force. We can choose to focus on kindness and helping others, now more than any other time. Because when we do we will realise that it feels so much better to be fuelled by love and the desire to make a positive difference to another person's life then to be isolated in our own fear.
You can start with a small thing, like picking up the litter on your street, or helping your neighbour with her bin, or smiling at a someone. It can be bigger, like making the choice to reduce your household waste, eating less meat, not driving when you can walk, supporting a local business.
And before you know it, you will be wondering what other positive changes you can make, can you raise money for charity somehow? Can you help with a community project? Can you volunteer an hour, or half a day or a weekend to make someone else's life better, happier, healthier!? You will be amazed at all the projects in your area that need volunteers.
We teach our children to share, to be kind, to listen to others but how often do we practice this ourselves? How often do we demonstrate these actions?
These were questions that have started to feel more pressing to me recently and what is most prevalent is the voice inside of me asking, what can I do to help make things better? How can I be part of the change?
After reading stories about refugees and the dangerous situations they have had to endure, both in their home lands and in escaping violence and persecution, I knew I needed to be proactive in helping this cause. It resounded deep within me, I knew that it was only by circumstance and chance that it was these people suffering and not me and my family. I could see my children in every photo of a child in a refugee camp and my own husband in every father cradling his child. And the horror of losing children and friends and lovers, well I felt that for me, I knew that that pain was unimaginable and unbearable and that it was a fact for too many refugees.
I googled what I could do to help in my area and charities I could donate to, and I signed up to volunteer my time helping refugee families locally and I donated some money. But it didn't feel enough still and I wanted to do something more. So I thought about all the people I knew and who I could enlist to help.

Choose Love Art Auction was born from this. My friend and gallery owner, Leontia Reilly, was interested to learn of my proposal and she quickly gathered her team of artists and together we planned to host an online Art Auction with 100% of the profits raised going to Help Refugees/Choose Love Charity. The auction goes live October 21st until the 27th. We have worked so hard to get to where we are and I feel proud that we have made a start, a choice to be active and promote kindness and most importantly to care in a time when we are almost encouraged not to, we have decided to choose love.
Visit www.leontiagallery for details on bidding and the artists.

Normally this would be held in a gallery in London but this year due to COVID it's all online, that means you can ALL join no mater where you are! It is a great opportunity for you to pick up an original piece of contemporary art for just £40.00 and by doing so, enabling ArtCan to continue to deliver it's vibrant program for artists! Join the event by going to @artcanorg bio link! It will be held on Wednesday 2nd September 6.30pm-8pm! Dwight Lanmon, former director of the prestigious Corning Museum of Glass, said he thought paperweights were “boring” before he became a staff member to Corning, home of the Houghton Paperweight Collection. Lanmon’s opinion changed dramatically after working with the Houghton paperweights, and he reports that he hasn’t had a boring moment with them since. He attributes his attraction to the imagination of their makers, who mastered a demanding technology and demonstrated an elegant sense of design.  He considers “paperweights to be among the most outstanding technical achievements in the 3500-year history of glassmaking.”  Lanmon admits that he considers paperweights to be unique, and important in the glass arts because of the magnifying glass dome, which gives them a magical appeal.  He thinks no other form of art glass takes such advantage of the magnifying properties of the glass dome.
The attraction of paperweights is not gender specific.  Although they are small and delicate, paperweights appeal to men and women equally. Indeed, some of the greatest collectors of all times were men. Famous collectors are described later in this chapter.
Because they are rare, fine paperweights are generally unknown to the general public.  But when they are introduced, paperweights have a universal attraction and almost magical fascination.  The public reaction is predictable when they first see fine paperweights and understand their history.  They are truly astounded by their beauty and history, and some have actually become speechless when they see paperweights for the first time.
The Alexander Gallery of fine antiques in New York City once described their experience with the attraction of paperweights. The gallery caters to collectors of a number of different genres of art, and each client is generally directed toward their selected interest – either to paintings, historical items, Indian artifacts or various decorative items.  Their clients usually tend to notice only those pieces in the gallery bearing relevance to their specific field of interest.  However, when the gallery started displaying a few antique and contemporary paperweights on a glass table, their staff noticed that each client who visited this room was startled by them, and simply stopped what they were doing to direct their attention toward the brightly colored glass weights.  They were immediately drawn to look at them, they then looked closer, and were eventually compelled to pick them up and hold in their hands. What is it that is so attractive about these colorful crystal objects that elicits this type of attention?
Paperweights simply have an almost magical attraction, and they present an irresistible urge to touch.  Indeed, for a fuller appreciation, paperweights should be touched and held in the hand to let the viewer gaze into its center and become lost in its magical beauty.
My wife, Joyce, and I have been volunteers as paperweight docents at the Forsythe Center Galleries at Texas A&M University, where fine paperweights are displayed.  The Forsythe Center Galleries, in addition to their outstanding glass collections of 19th century English cameo glass, French Gallé, American Tiffany and Steuben have had many paperweight exhibits over the years- including “The Art of the Paperweight, Challenging Traditions”, “Songs Without Words”, “A Texas Paperweight Celebration”, “A Natural Life: The Glass Paperweights of Paul Stankard”, “The Stars of Texas”, “The Outstretched Hand of Liberty”, and finally, the Ruth and Don Smith Collection that was exhibited as a loan before it was gifted in 2001.  In the process of being docents there for nearly eight years, we have talked with many thousands of people who had no previous experience with paperweights.  Most of them were astounded by their beauty and enthusiastic with their fascinating history.  We have seen people who, become actually speechless.  Of course, these weights are behind glass that prevents them from being handled, but even so, the visitors are enthralled.  It’s not unusual for them to actually bump their head or nose into the glass trying to get a better look!  We come away from the Galleries with a feeling of exuberance by introducing so many enthusiastic novices to the world of paperweights.  We wonder if any of them have eventually become collectors.
Thank You for Your Interest - To Be Continued Soon! This has been a continuing Public Service Announcement from The Paperweight Lovers of the L.H. Selman Gallery.
