I think one of the problems with the HoO characterizations is Rick kind of forgot to give half the cast hobbies and general interests, and maybe like people they know outside of their families and outside of camp, or if he did remember to it rarely gets brought up for most of them, or in the special case of Annabeth - she randomly develops a hobby in weaving for exactly one scene and then never again. Apparently she just knew how to do that, even though it is a skill she has literally never used before nor uses again.
The best examples I can give of this are comparing/contrasting the examples of when we do actually get this with the lack-thereof:
Hazel and Frank are good examples. Hazel has hobbies and interests generally unrelated to all her demigod stuff (horses and art) and we see this repeatedly discussed and brought up. She also knows and interacts with people outside of the necessities of her quest/Camp Jupiter or her family - Sammy was her best friend at school and they hung out and stuff! Meanwhile, Frank, as far as we know, doesn’t know anybody outside of his family even though he presumably went to school before Camp Jupiter? His hobby is... archery? That’s the only thing he ever really shows interest in but at the same time it only rarely gets brought up except for him using a bow as his main weapon and the like two instances of noting that Frank had hoped he was an Apollo kid for a little bit. The closest other detail we get to Frank having any other kind of hobby/interest is him mentioning off-hand that he used to play Mythomagic.
Piper and Leo - We can presume that Piper knew Shel before moving to Oklahoma, because Piper used to visit her grandpa often and as far as we know that’s also where Shel lives. But we never see Piper ever mention knowing anyone else in her grandfather’s community. Heck, when she’s introduced we’re basically outright told that she doesn’t interact much at all with any of her classmates outside of necessity, and we don’t even have any confirmation that before Hera’s mind-meddling that she even acknowledged Leo’s existence. Also, Piper has like, exactly zero hobbies. We do not know what Piper does in her free time or what she likes (except vaguely that she has surfed before), only really what she dislikes. Leo at least does have some kind of excuse for not really knowing anybody, and an explicit explanation about why that is the case and how he feels about it. Leo also has a repeatedly referenced interest/hobby in mechanics that’s very core to his character.
Percy and Annabeth? Pre-HoO, they both have plenty of interests and know people outside their general circles! Percy knows kids at school. Annabeth’s general outer social circle is Camp Half-Blood, because she grew up there, but she clearly knows people at camp. She’s also super into architecture! And Percy does a ton of stuff in his free time - he skateboards! He plays basketball! He has two pets he takes care of (Blackjack and Mrs. O’Leary)! Post-HoO he’s on a swim team! But during HoO? Percy’s hobbies just kind of disappear, besides “oh yeah he uh. Does water stuff.” There’s no acknowledgement of like, “Yeah Percy sets up a little basketball hoop on the back of his door on the Argo 2 and shoots trash at it.” Literally anything! And yeah, Annabeth’s architecture interest is somewhat acknowledged, but also like, not really? We at least get some kind of “Yeah, in her spare time she’s usually on her laptop working on stuff” but we also barely get any instances of Annabeth thinking about her friends at camp except for like, Tartarus.
For Jason it at least kind of works because a.) he has amnesia and it’s implied he doesn’t really have close friends at Camp Jupiter besides Reyna, so it figures he only ever really references random other legionaries like, twice. and b.) there is also the heavily implication that Jason doesn’t have hobbies, because his entire life was so focused around his training at Camp Jupiter. This works less with Reyna, but she also kind of has an excuse for not knowing people besides like, her sister and Jason, given she ran away when she was young, Circe’s island was destroyed, and she could have only been at Camp Jupiter for like 3 years maximum at that point. And she’s not exactly the most social character. We also don’t get much indication of her hobbies, besides she also likes horses and it’s heavily implied she likes nature/gardens? Presumably, given we get like, one note of that in HoO, maybe two if you count her living on Circe’s island, and then like one more nod to that in TOA. And we only get her POV chapters in BoO anyways so again, she has some excuses. Coach Hedge also is incredibly bland besides maybe him having a hobby in sports, and... violence? Which definitely does not count. And him lacking any POV chapters doesn’t really help.
I think this is why Nico continually feels like such a strong character, simply because we know what he does in his spare time. We know he knows people outside of the camps (most of those people are gods or ghosts, but he at least knows people) and technically you could argue him knowing about Camp Jupiter between BoTL and TLO counts too. He even references his old neighbor at one point. Obviously, he’s very into Mythomagic, and that comes up a lot because it’s his special interest and is usually also relevant to their quests. He travels a lot, and apparently used to when he was younger as well. We also learn he used to have a special interest about pirates and that apparently may have played into his crush on Percy. Like, all that is so simple and minor but it makes such a difference for how Nico feels as a character. Most of Nico’s stuff though is established in the first series, which definitely helps because the first series was pretty good about giving characters hobbies and maybe some people they know - Annabeth, Percy, and Nico we’ve already covered, but also like, Grover knows other satyrs and is usually practicing music and also we know what foods he likes. Thalia is very into punk culture and music. We know she particularly likes Green Day. We know she knew the Hunters of Artemis before the events of TTC. Rachel's whole thing is that she’s super into art and she has a bunch of connections through her rich family, and she’s basically Percy’s only mortal friend. They have lives!
If you put a protagonist in a room and told them to occupy themselves, you should have an answer for what they do. They should be able to name one person outside their immediate social circle who they are generally friendly with or vaguely know, unless they have a specific reason for that to not be the case. HoO crew needs to occupy their time by themselves, no weaponry, for twenty minutes? Hazel could be drawing, Nico could be organizing his cards, Leo could be tinkering, Annabeth could be working on her laptop, Percy could be trying out little skateboard tricks. Jason, Piper, Frank, and Reyna? What would they be doing?
TOA does actually answer that question for Jason, at least, because we learn that Jason makes tiny dioramas! That’s adorable! Why doesn’t he do that in HoO?! TOA also gives us more depth to Will Solace besides “He’s a medic and does medic things” with telling us that he’s into Star Wars. Like, that’s actually so much information to work with! Thank you! And then we also find out in TOA that Nico’s also kinda into art! We still don’t get anything new for Piper, Frank, or Reyna - besides again one more potential implication that Reyna thinks plants are Pretty Okay, and that nature is Mildly Alright. Like, not even “maybe she keeps a houseplant” territory, all we have is “if she had the option, she might be interested in visiting a flower garden.” But honestly TOA at least gives us something for most of the characters we see. Like at least one thing. Most of the rest of the writing is a mess but at least the characters are mildly interesting.
Anyways, give your characters hobbies, it’s good for them.

Hi Wawa, I have a question. What is the difference you noticed between what the American-dominant demography of tumblr vs what douyin users tend to fixate on?
Nothing specific coming to mind atm in regard to like, general trends. Maybe one thing is like, Tumblr likes to ask unimportant questions? "Why is THIS THING happening", "Why is THAT there?".
Anal-retentive stuff like that.
Tumblr likes to fixate on missing shoes, for example. It's always "where did her shoe goes", "why's he missing a shoe", "omg the missing shoe". Honestly, nobody on douyin noticed the shoe, or if they did, they didn't care to comment on it. Like who cares where the shoe is? This video is not about how someone's foot got busted up because they were only wearing one shoe. Like this is a silly goofy video, officer, why are you asking so many questions. Etc.
Douyin users like to play "yes and" in the comment section is another point of contrast, I guess. That is, if there's something that can be extrapolated and spectated on, it will be. Scenarios WILL be played out. POVs and thought processes of any character in a video (be it subject, passerby, inanimate object, or external reference) WILL be imagined and assumed.
I'm just spitballing here but I sort of feel like tumblr users don't do that because in general the evolution of the culture on this site makes it impolite to presume things about strangers or assert their POV, even jokingly. Or maybe this comes from IRL sensibilities, idk, seems like it could just be a general American thing (I say, speaking as one).

If Paz was magically revived, how would she feel about recom Quaritch, or Spider getting a new family
I think theres actually a chance of her coming back as a recom, so thinking about this really interesting.
she knows human miles, she knows the cold, violent, man who had lost his humanity. she didn't know her son, he wasn't more than a babe when she died, but she couldn't help but feel robbed, that was her baby, she was his mother.
she also knows she hold no claim to him, its been 16 years she's been dead, probably charred up and sunbleached by now. he doesn't even know who she is, outside of maybe a name, basic paperwork information, a photo if she's really lucky.
I think if she met quaritch, she'd spot the differences easily. He's soft, his eyes don't blaze with anger, his body is looser, a smile graces his face more often. he's not the man she remembers. he barely recognizes her, which she takes no offense to, considering she only recognizes his blue ass cause of the photo she saw amongst the recom files. when she asks about her son, he corrects her that its no longer miles, its spider now. he doesn't give her room for argument, says he doesn't and hasn't known the name miles for years, and that he won't force it on him. so he's a good dad now, she'd be forced to think. when she asks about his family, who raised him, he'd be forced to tell her that it was the very people that killed them both. she wouldn't take that well.
I don't think she'd ever be brought to honest anger, I think it would just be grief, confusion, hopelessness even. to be resurrected into a world where your son doesn't know you, doesn't even go by the name you gave him, was raised by your killer's, who couldn't pick you out of a crowed. that's a whole new level of cruel.
I think she could be swayed like Quaritch, given some sort of redemption arc, but I think she'd always be a bit bitter that her son was robbed from her. I think even if spider clung to her like he did quaritch there would be a disconnect; his maternal neglect and her maternal grief would clash; spider doesn't know what its like to be loved by a mother, he shy's away from her because he's scared of getting hurt, he needs her to make the first move but he also needs her to be slow, gentle, with him in a way she doesn't know how to be. she doesn't recognize her own son, knows nothing about him, has no idea how to connect with him, even if she tries he flees from her, she doesn't know what to do.
in time things could get better, easier, but maternal issues lurk so much deeper then most other wounds, and if both parties are hurting from trauma's that cannot truly be healed, I think it would really difficult. one person is trying to rebuild a relationship that never existed with a boy that is long gone, the other is trying to find a mother in someone who's very existence pains them, in someone who is missing the person he used to be so long ago.

The I feel like she sees me line being said to Eddie who is the person that truly sees Buck for all that he is. Are we supposed to take this line at face value which would indicate piss poor writing because they needed to rush to a horrible ending or do we take it as Buck being an unreliable narrator? What was the audience supposed to interpret from Buck saying that, were we truly supposed to believe him or we supposed to be pissed at Buck for saying this to the one person that truly sees Buck?
Good morning to me, I guess.
I'm assuming you haven't really seen people's reactions in the fandom on tumblr because I feel like I saw this said in quite a few posts going around, but you are absolutely not supposed to take this line at face value. I'm surprised that people think you should. 9-1-1 has from the beginning had a habit of turning friendships into romantic relationships (Bathena and Madney) and taking their time with these things rather than having an instalove situation. Even Karen and Hen, who meet when they're set up on a date together, don't instantly fall in love. I do not think they would set Eddie or Buck up for an endgame relationship with a woman by having them date that woman immediately, even if they didn't plan to make Buddie canon.
Buck is clearly struggling post-death. He's lost and once again looking for the answer from a romantic partner. He did a lot of growth in regards to his family relationships this season but not his romantic ones. Remember, his couch ended up destroyed and he asked his latest girlfriend to pick the new one out for him. Again. He's still not picking his own damn couch. After being unable to sleep on the one his mom gave him but passed out instantly on Eddie's where he ran to feel safe.
If people think this is all, somehow, an accident or the writers are doing this without knowing what they're doing, then I can't help you. Do you also think the symbolism I put into my fanfics are a total accident? Do you guys think I picked the name of the poem "Fuchsia Emerald Alizarin Rose" just because the colors are fun and they accidentally spell out F.E.A.R. or do you think maybe I did that absolutely 100% on purpose and was waiting for someone to realize?
Buck saying that to Eddie is 100% supposed to make the audience raise their eyebrows. Especially when we see Eddie's reaction. He's confused and he's hurt and he's annoyed. Eddie then spends his next few lines showing Buck (and us) that he sees Buck. Buck misses it, it goes right over his head, but the audience is shown that Buck is wrong and Eddie sees him.
I think there was a lot of internal stuff going on behind the scenes way high up the ladder that meant Buddie didn't happen this season. No, I don't mean that in a tinhatting way, I just mean that they knew Fox wouldn't renew them, they didn't know if they'd get picked up somewhere else, Fox hasn't promoted or cared about this show the way it has its other shows in a while, and I think it's pretty clear there was shuffling and changes going on with 6B. So I think things had to be put off. Similar to the pandemic, where I genuinely wonder what kind of season four we would've gotten if we'd had the full 18 episodes and hadn't had to work around Covid. I think that when we know there was a big shift going on behind the scenes, we need to have some grace and patience in how that will effect the story that's told on screen.
But I think that this default to "everything good we see on our screens is an accident and the writers are making shitty choices" is a horrible bad faith argument, and it's exhausting. Aren't you exhausted? I'm exhausted. Fandom shouldn't treat the writing and production team like their enemies any more than the writing and production team should treat the fans like their enemies in some kind of war they have to win (looking at you, GoT showrunners).
We are supposed to be annoyed that Buck is missing the point. We are supposed to see Buck's yearning to be a husband and a father, and how he's missing what's right in front of him. We are supposed to put two and two together and see that Eddie was hurt by Buck's words, that Eddie sees Buck, that Eddie is Buck's safe place, and that Eddie in that moment decided he might not have a chance with Buck and needs to move on, because previously we saw Eddie admit he wants romance again but he doesn't want to go out on dates, we saw his aunt say she met her husband through work, we saw him say 'we have time' and then we saw him immediately after Buck tells him about this new girl who "sees him" flee to visit his mother and then immediately actually try dating. On a meta level this is also because Eddie needs confidence in himself as a romantic partner and needs some more experience under his belt before he's ready to take the plunge with Buck, but in Eddie's mind, I think it's pretty clear he feels Buck will never want him back and he's trying to find the love he wants somewhere else, even if his heart is still Buck's.
So that's what I think. I think it's not explicitly spelled out for a few reasons, but frankly if one of them was a woman we wouldn't need it explicitly spelled out and personally I kinda like that it's not. Something that annoys me with M/F pairings is the constant "we all know you two like each other" talks from third parties that half the time aren't about the characters but are about the audience, to either tell the audience SEE THEY LIKE EACH OTHER THAT'S WHAT THIS IS ABOUT or to give the audience some fanservice while the characters aren't ready to get together. I don't need to be pandered to that way, thank you, so I'm a fan of the slightly more subtle approach that I, personally, see going on with Buddie.
If you or anyone else disagrees with me and feels it was just "piss poor writing" then that's entirely your right. I'd just appreciate it if people who feel that way would stop watching the show, and stop putting their complaints into the inboxes of people who clearly do enjoy the show.
TL;DR - You answered your own question, Buck is an unreliable narrator (and always has been) and we are supposed to be frustrated he said this to Eddie who has proven time and again (and does so in that very scene) that he sees Buck.

i know the trope of dependent (or “useless” as they’re typically referred to as) female characters tends to get a lot of flak for very obvious reasons but i’ve been thinking about it lately and honestly i don’t think i mind the trope much at all, and the only problem is that it’s just.. never done right?
like ok, i can compare serah and kairi when it comes to this because i think it’s pretty clear they both fit into the trope, but the way they’re handled is very different
in serah’s case, she starts off as being really dependent on others, lightning and snow especially, due to how she grew up relying on lightning while also being neglected of the emotional support she needed to learn to rely on herself. in xiii-2, after lightning and snow had gone missing, she doesn’t even try to find them herself or do much of anything other than just wait in new bodhum until they eventually show up again, which they don’t
it’s not until noel shows up and encourages her to take initiative, and even criticizes her complacency depending on what dialogue option you go with, that she finally realizes that she actually wants to go and that if she wants to be reunited with lightning, she needs to be the one to see it through, and that’s exactly what she does, all while developing more and more sense of agency as the game goes on
later on, when serah essentially sacrifices her life for the sake of the world and her soul manifests in the void beyond where lightning is, she acknowledges that everything she did throughout the course of her journey was all her own doing and that, despite her dying in the end, she was proud of herself for taking the initiative to finally meet with lightning again
and that’s what serah’s character arc is all about, it starts with her being dependent on others and lacking in agency, only for her to break free of her dependence and achieve her goal with her own effort, taking full responsibility for the consequences she faced
the thing about kairi is that she also has the same starting point where she is largely dependent on sora and riku, but her dependence isn’t as criticized within the writing as serah’s is, nor is there much reason for her to be that way in the first place as far as i can tell
i know i’ve talked a lot about how i really do believe kairi can receive character development and become less dependent on others and that’s because we’ve had so many moments in past games where she flat-out says she wants to do more and how she wants to become stronger and be sora’s and riku’s equals, and there have even been times where she has shown signs of taking initiative in fights, such as when she fought xehanort in melody of memory and, though she lost the fight in the end, she repeatedly got back up again and kept trying
the only problem is that nothing ever comes out of it. right when you think she’s finally going to be given more agency and have a bigger role as a character, that all gets stripped away from her at the last second. she’s still stuck at acknowledging that she needs to become independent, similar to when serah realized she had to start taking initiative, but never actually making progress on that front. it’s like her character arc keeps being delayed over and over again
again, i’ve realized i don’t personally mind the trope of having a female character be dependent on others, but it needs to be done right in order to not be a waste of character potential. i think serah is a good example of when the trope is done right, again because she grew out of her dependence, found her own agency and had a reason for being that way in the first place, whereas kairi doesn’t have much reason for her dependence and yet shows signs of developing as a character and has every opportunity to grow, but the writing continually wastes each opportunity for the sake of shelving her for seemingly no reason

@exhausted-pigeon you taunted me now deal with the consequences.
I don't really have one interpretation of him, I have several.
Do you know that post that says that comics are a bit like ancient myths, and how a character may have many sides, depending of what story is being told? Yeah, this is mostly how I approach comics, with only one difference, comic characthers aren't immutable, so they can change and evolve.
You see, a comic book character exists beyond the pages, it exists on the popular imaginary, it exists on movie adaptations, tv series, animated series, games, and so on, and often those media interact with each other, see Harley Quinn, for example, who was created for the animated series but later was properly introduced to the comic universe. And why this is relevant, you might ask, because, well, the character doesn't exist as a hard and well defined character, it exists as several interpretations.
For me, as a fan and not a DC writer, is useless to find who is the Real Jason, he doesn't matter for me. Several writers have written and published their interpretation of Jason, and sometimes contradicting each other, so instead of trying to find a coherent narrative of who is Jason Todd I rather accept there are many, and then I play with them depending of the situation and the story I want to tell.
For me, there's the Angry Jason, the Jason who didn't forgive Bruce and never will. This Jason is more violent with his methods, more ruthless on the streets, he isn't afraid to face Batman or any other bat. He does what needs to be done, and has no intention of playing by any rules that not his own. He's unpleasant to be around, and more often than not the only thing he shares with the kid who died is the memories, because even the name Jason Todd is foreign to him.
I have the Broken Jason too. This Jason awoke in a world that moved on without him, and had nothing to cling on except his name and his memories. This Jason is angry too, but he's also hurt. He lashes out because that's the only way to make sure he's going to make a difference this time. His violence it's not because he wants to punish the world, he's violent because he's afraid of the clock ticking against him. He wants to make as much difference as he can before he dies again. He wants to accept the family back because he didn't had that the first time, and he wants to know how it is, to have a safety net and people to have his back.
I have the Grieving Jason. This Jason mourns for the kid who died, and who lives this second life to make sure that kid never die again. He's his own protector. He is violent because if this is what it takes to stop it all, then he'll do it. He doesn't hate Batman and doesn't think there's anything to forgive, Bruce did the things he thought right, and it wasn't enough, so Jason himself will fill in the voids. This Jason is more melancholic, his death was something that changed him so deeply that he is no longer the same person as before.
I have other Jason's too, altought not by name. I have a Jason that never really changed, and he is the exact same Jason as before, but it's easier for everyone to pretend he's not. I have a Jason that only needed a bit of time to understand things. And I could keep going forever. For me, all those Jason's exists in the comics, it's just a matter of highlighting certain characteristics.
The most permanent interpretation of Jason that I have is actually more of a set of values I consider the core of the character. I think he's a very emotional person, who cares too much and has hard time letting people go, even after they do him harm. I think he has his own moral code, that may vary depending of the interpretation, but always include saving people rather than punishing the agressor. I think he has a hard time separating justice from revenge, and when he does he has a even harder time deciding which path to choose. I think he's a bit too dramatic and likes to act like he's the main character in the story. I think he's too brave for his own good.
I hope this makes sense
