Thrift horses!!! Please please please take a look through craigslist/ebay/your local equivalent, or visit your local thrift stores and see if they have any horses. Thrift horse propaganda:

They're often unique, rare, or retired figures that you can't just find at the supermarket or toy store

They're often a lot cheaper than new horses

You support a local business and sometimes, if it's a charity store, your purchase directly aids a good cause

There's enough plastic in the world and we really should cut down on buying new plastics

Sometimes there's a name written on the horse's belly or it's gotten a bit too close to a marker or its coat is scratched. It's well-loved, it has a history, it is truly unique in all the world. There's no other horse just like it.

Someone left these little horsies behind and now they're all alone in the world and they really want to be loved again🥺

But if you really want new figures I'm not judging. Maybe you're a germaphobe, maybe hunting down thrift horses is more of a task than a game to you, maybe you're just overwhelmed at the prospect, I 100% understand! Here are some brands you might enjoy:

Breyer Stablemates - Very sleek-looking. Small, but not too small. Affordable if you get a value pack. Not much to say, they're Breyers, they look nice.

CollectA - Slightly larger than Stablemates and slightly more expensive. Kinda gritty-looking (affectionate). Again, not much to say, they look nice.

Schleich Bayala - If you want pink horses. Same price range as CollectA. Definitely more in the "toy" category than collectible/art. Stay away from Schleich's regular horses unless you really really like their look - the quality of the paint jobs and molds is not worth the price. But they excel at making prissy pink fairy horses.

Safari Ltd. - Toys, more than art, but cheaper than Schleich and CollectA. They can be a bit hit-or-miss, but there are some true gems in their lineup. Just be aware that their paint jobs are usually a lot simpler irl than in promotional photos. They also have some very good pink horses.

Bullyland - They're made of hard rubber (similar texture to a car tire) and are extremely scratch resistant, but they still look nice. Might be hard to find outside of Europe. In the same price range as Safari Ltd. I love them and they're so underrated 😭

The Commercial Witch

This post is a little unlike my others, but it is one that I find interesting and have been wanting to make for a while, if simply to talk about it as more of a think piece. Since I began actively practicing witchcraft, I've been seeing a rise in companies and brands promoting and selling things related to witchcraft, as well as a host of social media influencers making witchy aesthetic posts with elaborate altars and setups. While there is nothing inherently wrong with either of those, it has led to a side effect that I've seen mentioned offhandedly but not really talked about much: the commercialization of witchcraft.

Influence

While I love the aesthetic posts as much as the next witch (both because they are pretty and organized well, and because it sometimes sparks ideas of my own), I don't so much love the implications such posts give about the nature of witchcraft in the modern day.

I've seen many new witches ask what crystals they have to buy, and what plants they should start with, and how to make a grimoire look picture perfect, and where to buy the best tools, and is a drawer full of divination tools enough or do they need more? All perfectly valid and genuine questions for those still learning, that deserve full and honest answers. But I've also seen just as many posts from people wanting to learn witchcraft that lament that they could never afford it, and that is where the problem I feel lies.

Posts from witchcraft influencers and those who simply like the aesthetic and are not actual witches imply through what they show that it is the things that make the witch rather than the person themself - and that the only way to harness magical ability is through items rather than practice and skill. So, not knowing any better, new witches pick up on that and believe the same.

To be clear: material goods are not a problem. If dozens of tarot decks make you happy, go ahead. If collecting crystals adds value to your practice, do so. If you find a box full of A-Z herbs useful, absolutely get it! My problem comes with the fact that none of these collections are necessary to becoming a witch, and it is often presented as such. The earliest witches we have records of did not have access to the wide range of spices and herbs we do. They did not have crystals, minerals, and stones from around the world to harness energy. They often did not have libraries of books to learn from - and likely, many would not have been able to read even if they did. They (usually) did not have specially made tools for their craft. They used what was available, they used what they knew and made and grew themselves, they learned from each other or practice or observation, and they used items that they already owned.

And so can we.

Capitalism and Witchcraft

As the other half of this topic, the relationship between capitalism and witchcraft is also concerning to me for a variety of reasons. I have noticed an increase in regular stores selling witchcraft goods in kits and little box sets and the like, and upon inspecting them, most are... inadequate, at the least. Generally, they are either very surface-level or very appropriative - neither of which should be something we should be thrilled about.

From selling white sage for 'smudging' and a cheap tarot deck in Sephora's Starter Witch Kit to TJ Maxx selling herb kits, mini mortars and pestles, and cheap divination decks as a Halloween gimmick, large companies are trying to cash in on the renewed interest in witchcraft. The increase in interest itself is not offensive - many witches I know appreciate the more open acceptance of a practice many of us have had to keep hidden for fear of judgment and safety. However, with large brands treating it like a trend without doing research or marketing it appropriately, it can cause harm.

I made a post recently about cultural appropriation in witchcraft, and two of the signs of appropriation are lacking respect for a practice and commercializing it. Large brands marketing things like tarot decks as fun games to play with your friends ignores the rich historical and cultural context attached to the cards, as well as the spiritual significance they take on for many readers. By giving surface-level books on how to read them, or failing to provide books at all, they encourage a lack of knowledge in the subject - another red flag for appropriation. By selling herb kits for 'smudging' containing things like white sage or palo santo, they are taking from closed practices and traditions that were often made illegal to those from whom they originated (yet another red flag), and teaching newcomers to as well.

This isn't to say a new witch cannot buy their first items from brands like this - many do not have the option of locally sourcing their materials from small businesses that put in the work to sell items respectfully, as these are still often far and in between. There may also be safety reasons or other reasons why they are unable to acquire tools in any other way, and my intent is not to pass judgment on those who do for whatever reason. My intent is to urge new witches to look beyond the surface of what these companies present, and to critique the companies for selling these items the way they do to begin with.

Some of these companies have removed their items due to backlash - as Sephora did with their kit - while others simply do not care. And, there is nothing we as individuals can do to stop the companies from trying, without organized collective action; and I do not believe our communities are at a place where that effort can be made in earnest just yet, though hopefully in the future they will be.

Moving Forward

So, from where I stand, it is up to us as consumers of both media and materials to think critically about what we are consuming. Whether that be questioning assumptions we make based on what we see online, or questioning the ethics of what we are purchasing and where it comes from.

Our lines will look different depending on where we are, what we practice, and the resources available to us. All I urge people to do is to do what they can to be intentional in their choices, and that if consuming from large companies and social media to put in the work to deepen the surface-level understanding they offer and grow on your own.

I went to the Leeds Queer Market!

Some purchases I made and some new creators to follow. 

I went along to the Leeds Playhouse this afternoon before we went to see Barbie later on, and I was super pleased to go along — they were up on one of the floors in the Playhouse where the kitchen is, with various tables set up selling arts and crafts, jewellery, prints, cacti, and so on.

The market is run by Quercus Craft, I think every month or so? And I just wanted to show off some of the things I picked up and link to the creators’ stores and social media!

Firstly, I picked up this gorgeous print from Matt David (they/them), who is a queer Scottish artist based out of London — a lot of their work grapples with queerness and sexuality, including safe sex and HIV awareness, but also layers of symbolism, how symbols are created and communicated, and there’s this big thematic trend of exploring the symbology around queer bodies, the ways in which they’re objectified through fellow queer gazes, to incredible effect. 

I love this piece so much — Matt David has several pieces like this one where they create these layered cyanotype portraits whilst also scanning the condoms through, and because of the material of the condoms and the lubricant on them, they have this incredible shine effect on them. I adore this piece, Hey Daddy, because of the halo-like shimmer of the condom’s ring over the figure’s head, and I’m so, so excited to put this in a gold frame and hang it up in my new place once I’m moved in. 

As well as these figures using condoms, they also have some beautiful colour portraiture featuring different queer heroes — I especially love this piece of Marsha P. Johnson — and do other forms of portraiture and sketches!

I picked up a few pieces of jewellery from Abigaia (she/her), a (n English) northerner and queer witch who plays a lot with themes of nature and spirituality in her work — she’s got a big focus on using sustainable materials in her craftwork as well as in its packaging, which is so awesome to see, the values of the work itself extended to its packaging materials. 

I was super excited about the variety of charms and pendants she had on show — I picked up a snake, a rainbow mushroom, and a serotonin symbol, but she had so many to choose from. On her website, you can buy a mystery charm for £4, or ask for a specific charm in the notes — she’s got a huge variety of nature-based and spiritual symbols, including different animals, traditional websites, flora and mushrooms, a few chemical structures, and different pagan religious symbols.

Nadya Griendroheru is an Indonesian artist and illustrator who just creates some absolutely gorgeous examples of character design — they have a really awesome flow and use of colour in their work with exaggerated angles and features, bright yellows, oranges, reds, greens, with a real sense of movement and personality conveyed in each print and piece. 

She had a bunch of different Breaking Bad characters with pronouns printed on them (except for the one of Hank, which says ACAB), just like this one, and I just thought they were hilarious.

Melany was selling incense they make themselves, and also bags from Mochilas para sanar, a platform for selling mochilas by indigenous Colombian creators, Mama Zenchina and Haba Ulaca, with 80% of proceeds going to the creators and 20% going to Somos Semillas, an organisation dedicated to educating about and collating resources for the Abya Yala diaspora.

I don’t think that they have any of their earrings available for sale on their online store at the moment, but if you do see them selling in person anywhere, they do a variety of earrings like this one, as well as geckos and lizards, frogs, candies and sweets, and they’re very cute! They also had on the stall a range of badges and stickers, little ornaments, and so on. 

Build Your Jungle UK produce a lot of resources and guides to cultivating and looking after tropical plants at home, as well as creating some utterly gorgeous prints and stickers showing different varieties of plants and foliage, and also frogs!

The creators, Sofi (they/them) and Han (they/he) both have backgrounds in graphic design, so they collaborate on making these gorgeous illustrative posters and stickers of different plants you might cultivate in the home, and the pieces are just so vibrant and alive in their use of popping colour and really clean linework that makes every piece seem to pop right off the page.

I feel like I don't really "get" language preservation programs. They seem harmless at worst (except insofar as they redirect funding/time/effort from more worthy endeavors, like directly increasing the prosperity/health of the associated community) but all the purported benefits I've heard seem dubious. Obviously I get why *linguists* like them, but preserving a behavior just so people can study it seems kind of ridiculous. So then there's the pitch that there‘s knowledge that's only accessible to speakers of a language which I just sort of...don't buy? Oral traditions are very poor stores of information and it seems far more effective to just translate written information. So then there's this vague argument that find cultural diversity (which it assumes can only exist if they speak another language I guess) valuable in itself, which like, sure, but it inherently values old culture over new culture? It's not decreasing culture, it's just changing culture. And I feel like the most common implicit pitch is "old people will be sad if young people stop practicing their culture" but like...yeah, and my grandma is sad I don't go to church. Like, that sorrow is valid or whatever but it shouldn't be prioritized over the freedom of young people. Another common pitch is that it promotes like, a sense of ethnic identity, but a sense of ethnic identity isn't necessarily a good thing! It's neutral at best!

The best pitch I've seen is that everyone wants to preserve the language but it's a coordination problem, where you can't maintain it on your own, which like, maybe, but I don't really see the evidence for that, and I'm certain the preferences of children (the most affected parties!) aren't being counted

Consumerism: what is this

Today we can’t imagine our lives without online stores and malls, and people consider shopping as a meaning of life. But does our love for shopping come naturally? Below, I’ll describe what consumerism is, how this concept has developed throughout the years and why we should think more before buying new stuff.

Certainly, we have always consumed things. People bought clothes, furniture and food, but their need to buy was dictated by a necessity, not a desire. For instance, if a woman needed a new saucepan, she bought it and used it, until it was worn out. If a man needed a new pair of shoes, he replaced the old one. It was change in late 19th-Century Britain, when people began to be displayed with a variety of food and clothing in magazines. Only the upper classes could afford expensive clothing, luxurious houses and furniture. However, ordinary people began to desire to consume just as much as wealthy people.

At first, companies produced and sold products because people needed them. In other words, they fulfilled real desires. But then companies' founders thought they needed more profit, so they started to learn to seduce their customers. Business couldn’t wait until people would ask for their products, so they started overproducing unnecessary goods and promoting them with mass advertisement and propaganda. 

After the 1890s, many new shops began to appear. Companies sold any kind of product, from soap to cars, and at the same time, increased their advertising budgets. Therefore, people learnt that money has a value and a large salary became a synonym of happiness. The value of time and money has changed.

After the Great Depression the amount of working hours were reduced, people started to work less and got more free time. It seemed that workers could spend their free time with their families, but at this point, companies change people’s minds a lot. Corporations created new needs in society and convinced people that products are more meaningful than relationships. People started to value shopping over free time and thus, bought more. Also, corporations learnt to replace old items with fresh ones, so customers never felt satisfied with what they had. Instead, they always wanted new products, more modern or… Well, just new. 

Another thing which enforced the development of consumerism was electrification. When electricity appeared in every home, people started to buy refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and radios on a huge scale. More than that, they competed over who had the more modern refrigerator or the fancier car. 

A widespread of television also fuelled consumer desire, because now people saw ads not only in magazines, but also at their homes. After World War 2 television was in every home. For the first time in history, goods which were previously exclusive to the upper class, become available to everyone. TV shopping made people feel happy because they regarded themselves as wealthy social strata who could buy anything they wanted.

Thus, the American ideas of Growth and Progress were mirrored in the concept of Consumption, according to which ‘’more’’ is always ‘’better’’. ‘’The more products you have, the happier you are’’ — this trend has become widespread in a modern society as well. Society has made consumption a way of life and we get used to constant replacing of ‘’old’’ goods with fresh ones. 

We have learned to buy what we do not actually need, whereas modern media only fuel our desire to shop. In order to stop this endless circle of ‘’desire-purchase-satisfaction- replacement’’ we have to become more attentive to our triggers and motives. Otherwise, we'll never be satisfied and happy.
