Debris: speculation and what we know so far about...

Bryan

The character is from Texas, has no siblings, and his parents are both alive.

He served in MARSOC (Marine Special Forces) in Afghanistan, where he was in a military prison in some capacity (officer or detainee unclear, but an alternate reality he's called a war criminal, so he's likely detained).

FWIW, I'm a little surprised that in an alternative reality Bryan wasn't a part of Influx. He shares a similar kind of backstory with Anson Ash.

He carries a baseball on the plane like a momento stress ball (1x03).

He eats...a lot, literally thinks with his stomach, seemingly indiscriminately (#you could just pull up a chair to the buffet). Stale Peeps, weeks old sandwiches, rewarmed burritos, anything from the minibar, etc. Maybe he was a smoker in the time before and it killed his sense of taste. Or he just has an iron stomach from his time on active duty. In any case, food seems to be his unconditional OTP. I request a GIF supercut.

He seems to know a bunch of field operatives (Lester, Sharon, John the ME, Muntz, Beck from containment) from various Orbital teams, perhaps even worked cases with a few, along with everyone in Maddox's office. He's very cordial so presumably he likes them, but in stark contrast at least half seem to decidedly dislike him with baiting antagonism, some openly hostile. Sharon: "why are you smirking at me Bryan?" Muntz, the Laghari lab tech: "I've come across plenty like you...men who play by their own rules." Beck: "They only send in the A-team when they want the agents to survive...easy for you to say, I'm the one who had to tell his wife". No wonder he feels a bit ostracized. Perhaps his reputation (impulsive?) proceeds him or perhaps he's been labeled an "unlucky" partner that misfortune follows so he gets kept at a distance?

The exception to the above seems to be Gary Garcia, the former scientist that helps hide George. May be former partners if the audio during credit rolls is any indication, and knows about Bryan's health / injections. They appear close. Perhaps because they share a mentality: both presumably injured in their line of work at Orbital, and they know what it means to have to rely on yourself.

When we meet Finola and Bryan, it seems like they've been working together for a few weeks, stateside at least (Finola's quote 1x02: Been here 3 weeks, feels like 3 years) and that he's had at least two Orbital partners prior, one (Julian / Jules) that died on duty, and the other creepy Dutch guy still living, Niels. How many more partners has he been through? Is it protocol that they get reassigned/shuffled so often to follow the debris, or so as not to form attachments "This job is about being alone, it's supposed to be...we're a blip in other people's lives", or does his personality not play well with others, like from the pilot when he tells Finola "it's been a long time since I've worked with somebody who's looked at me like another human being."

Also in 1x01 when Bryan says, "So are we now saying the debris pulled [Kieran] from the ground and added meat to his bones" and Finola says no, he was cremated, Bryan looks almost disappointed like he was momentarily more hopeful than pragmatic. At first I thought this was just a lead up to introducing the fact that George Jones was alive, but maybe another plot point is that Bryan has lost someone in duty he wants back.

He carries a picture in his front pocket of a woman with some Persian/ Farsi(?) or Urdu(?) written on the back. It's hard to tell by the script, it could be neither. When confronted by that, his clone says "I can't let it go." Old flame that was lost? Or a partner of a fallen service member killed in action —I've lost brothers— that he couldn't save (is that part of Bryan's dark guilt / grief)? Civilian casualty of a Marine mission? In the pilot when he tells Isla "you have to tell her how much you need her, I know from experience...You will not be able to forgive yourself if you don't" is Bryan thinking of this woman?

EDIT: considering the next episode is called "Asalah," which could be a woman's name, maybe that's part of the text on the back of the photo. Pure speculation.

He counts on himself to be level and composed when it comes to his emotions and apologizes when he isn't. He loses that composure in the pilot when Isla talks about family therapy and fighting with her mother after Kieran's death: "I knew someone like her once." Was Bryan referring to himself, has he been through post-service therapy? Perhaps he developed a rift with his family or left home at an early age like she did?

Bryan would be great at pub trivia night. He always seems to have an odd fact ready about NASA tech, native legends, an article about a historical building that he read, Fleetwood PA, etc. He doesn't seem the type to keep facts on standby to impress, so perhaps he's a secret bibliophile even though Finola hassles him for not reading case files.

"Fin: Maybe we should run some more tests before we continue/ Bryan: I will cut bait if you want to / Fin; let's just look out for each other" 1x02 Bryan seems more cautious than impulsive, he does a good job of listening to Finola's concerns. Is that from experience? Did he get overconfident, mishandle debris, and get permanently injured, hence the frequent blood work and injections?

"This man saved my life." Why does Bryan trust Maddox implicitly? And when Maddox says in 1x07 "Investigate quietly. I want to keep the lights off. I don't want to lose anymore lives, Bryan, okay?" is that a word of warning specially for him? Does he have a body count? (see afforementioned question of frequent work partners turnover and having an unlucky reputation)

Bryan in protective of Finola when the CIA taps her apartment. It's the straw that turns his allegiance from his agency to his partner.

I still can't place why Bryan carries a baseball — it seems like it could be a red herring, but I can't get over the visual of Maddox playing catch with Dario and reading into it as some sort of surrogate bond — or why he has a chain around his neck (1x05). It's not service tags and probably not a ring, it's some kind of pendant: a large loop encircling a dull, perhaps tarnished, gray metallic disc. A patron saint? A piece of shrapnel? A piece of debris? Unclear, but it definitely has texture or an etching.

Vasilisa is reading bedtime stories for Darkling.

The Grishaverse fandom is very rich in different OTPs with Darkling and many of them are true and wonderful, but I chose a different way.

Initially it wasn't a love story. It was all about a war and different sides in it.

For centuries he has fought an uncompromising battle for the rights of Grisha and his stately and dark silhouette of a war leader has firmly erased his personal features out of the perception of the very people to whom he devoted his life. The Darkling was as eternal, reliable and out of reach like the sun and the moon. Generaly people are either afraid of him or go a little crazy about him.

At the beginning Vasilisa didn't think about him more than about weather outside.

He was so out her reach she could hardly remember his face features yet, just as everyone, she wouldn’t mistake him for somebody else. Still, Vasilisa thought about Ravka every day. Thanks to city gossips she was perfectly aware of the country’s hardships and her hear ached with the arriving bad news, longing to help the future they both strived for, though never even spoke to each other.

Then they were lucky to meet at last.

She got the power only he knew how to tame and use. Control and rule it to reclaim what’s been built piece by piece long before Alina sparked the civil war. She was thrilled and eager to step up and make a change for her own great dreams. They had to spend many hours, days together. Vasilisa was young and fierce, she needed practice and guidance, they both went for it and shortly the mutual respect bloomed.

For him, she was an open book. Yet being so close let her see a person behind all the shadows, military coats and names. A human. A sight of a careless phrase, then a lively glimpse, gestures, almost unseen, she carefully collected his true patterns and lines. That’s been such an astonishing and thrilling challenge she didn’t notice how the shattered pieces went into a clear portrait.

Feelings got the best of them, both unaware.

For her it was a little spark falling on a heap of dry straw, igniting a wildfire in a night. For him it was a soft flower, blooming and growing, the one he wasn’t looking at until its color burst out in a world of surrounding darkness.

Thus began a beautiful and desperate love story that has it all: love and death, fear and tenderness, bitterness and light laugh, honesty and bravery, cruelty and forgiveness, dreams and intimate conversations, tears and kisses, despair and trust, affection and care, anger and hurt, unconditional loneliness and loss, personal growth and equilibrium they’ve reached.

20. What made you decide to ship them?

Emet/Gisele:

I shipped them literally from the first scene when he shows up in the First “with a soul like that...” and then I mean enemies to lovers is my thing, then the fucking reincarnation angle...and the angst and the drama of it all I mean this was literally designed in a fucking lab to appeal to my very specific shipping interests ok

and like they are both intensely dramatic and devastatingly witty and expert schemers fond of 9 dimensional chess (though Gisele uses her powers for good!) and are absolutely a joy as clever rivals trying to outmaneuver each other and win the other over to their way of thinking. the fact that Emet is this chronically depressed immortal hiding his severe survivor’s guilt with this sad clown persona that’s not even his own, literally carrying the grief for his people on his back and subtly mind controlled for thousands of years by a deranged homicidal cosmic axolotl and yet still falls in love with this mortal and has his world totally shaken by her to the point he starts changing his plans??

Also I read ages ago (like towards the end of Stormblood) a dev interview where somebody said that the major players in Shadowbringers would be in love with WoL*, it’s just that it’s expressed in very different ways, and that quote fucking haunted me in every single Emet scene

not that I need my ships to be canon but it’s blindingly obvious to me how Emet feels even without that, and even though canonically it doesn’t “win” per se (yet! it could very well be wishful thinking but I still don’t believe we’ve seen the last of Emet. I didn’t believe it in 5.0 and I don’t believe it now), it’s ultimately a much deeper and more meaningful story to me than the one with his extremely popular counterpart/rival. there’s just so much meaty stuff to bite into with this ship, layers and layers and layers, even before I get into Gisele’s specific character and history. when I do? jfc it’s just really good shit

But that’s why my story goes the way it does. I’m a giant whiny baby and thought it was unfair and that he deserved to be happy after all that, despite all the horrible things he once did--and, again, I couldn’t stand the idea of Gisele losing someone like that.

And not to be petty on main but Emet/Gisele is everything I wanted S*lavellan to be but was let down with in canon da because Weekes just wasn’t up to the goddamn task of writing a trickster antagonist. Which is absolutely hysterical when you think of the fact that any hint of romance in this game is relegated to subtext for the player to interpret as they want. But I’ve said a lot that Emet is what Weekes thought he was doing when he wrote S*las in terms of the role in the story, but wildly missed the mark on and I stand by that.

[*ftr I think that also extends to Elidibus, in that he idolized Azem to the extent of assuming his role because he looked up to her so much, and he had a schoolboy crush on her, and he didn’t remember any of this until Gisele gave him the crystals.]

Gisele/Haurchefant/Aymeric/Estinien:

Everything, but what cemented it were the scenes leading up to the raid on the Vault because of the deep sense of trust they have in each other and how that puts a spotlight on it. If we are just going off solely what happens in the actual game:

- Haurchefant defends Ysayle during the riots entirely because Gisele and Estinien trust her. A shrug from Estinien and a reassuring head nod from Gisele are literally all the Commander of Camp Dragonhead needs to not only not take arms against the most notorious heretic in the history of the war who at this point is Public Enemy #1 in Ishgard, but defend her from the Temple Knights. Haurchefant didn’t even need explanations from the two of them. He trusts them both that much.

- paraphrasing because I forget the exact line but when they get back to Fortemps Manor and Edmont is fretting over Haurche and Haurche says “I’ve nothing to fear with the Azure Dragoon and the Warrior of Light at my side!” with fucking stars in his eyes

- the fierce loyalty they all show to Aymeric at Fortemps Manor when Lucia hatches the plot to go rescue him. Estinien is fiercely protective of Aymeric’s honor ( “Lies and slander!” re: the rumors that Aymeric is the Archbishop’s secret bastard son), and Haurchefant gushes about how much Aymeric means to Ishgard. Edmont calling them all romantic fools once it’s obvious that they are absolutely willing to throw everything away to save Aymeric

- it’s heavily implied in the game that Aymeric’s offscreen rescue came via Haurchefant and Estinien (and Lucia), given the start of the infamous cutscene at the sky dock when Gisele meets back up with them after she hunts the Heavens Ward. *pounds desk* rescue romance *pounds desk*

- the way Aymeric’s voice cracks in despair when he says Haurchefant’s name after Thing, the fact that Haurche is in Aymeric’s arms

...obviously things go very VERY differently in terms of the outcome, but even if I was the type of person to just accept what happened in the game, ships have sailed for far less than this

then during Dragonsong:

- Aymeric’s obvious closeness with House Fortemps--he’s literally walking with Artoirel and Edmont when he suffers the assassination attempt, and Artoirel was the one who tackled and disarmed the assailant. Yes, Aymeric is a reformer and the Fortemps are the most progressive of the High Houses and thus most likely to support him unequivocally, but this isn’t solely about politics imo, even if you set aside Aymeric’s canonical fondness for the most famous Fortemps ward (see below)

- After Vault raid part deux to rescue the hostages, Edmont point blank tells Aymeric that he considers him another son and that he sees a lot of Haurchefant in him and he frets greatly for him

That’s before all of the gap filling that I did in my head--that Gisele shakes up their whole world, and for the better, that she heals these old wounds in all of them just by being the loving, compassionate woman that she is, that she becomes the heart that beats for all of them by turns. I always say that I would ship Aymeric/Estinien/Haurchefant even without Gisele, but with her, they are absolutely perfected. the unshakeable nature of their bond because of what they went through together literally makes me cry if I think too much about it. they love and care for each other so much. they respect and admire each other so much. even when circumstances might keep them apart, they know where they belong, where their home is, and there’s nowhere else they’d rather be.

21. Favorite genre for them? (Angst, fluff, etc.)

Flangst. I just love emotional hurt/comfort too much. But I’m also a sucker for domestic fluff.

3. What is your favourite AU/prompt idea/trope for your pairing?

Favourite AU is the one where Lettow didn’t lose track of Elisa and managed to adopt her.

It did... not work out well at first, lol. Lettow had severe depression and had never had a childe before and had no idea what to do with her. Elisa had gone absolutely feral after three months of surviving night-to-night and sleeping in burrows she’d dug herself.

Over those three months Elisa had slowly gone batshit insane. In canon, Lampago scraped her out of it and taught her some survival skills, but this takes place earlier, before Elisa could do anything more than solve intra-kindred issues with “run away or claw their face off.” So in this AU Elisa has gone from a kind, generous and loving vet nurse that loved animals... to this near-wight who actually killed a couple of kindred over territory disputes.

Basically, she couldn’t control her Beast and was getting awfully close to wighting herself. In canon this was reversed by her watching Lampago and fighting hard not to be like her -- in this AU she doesn’t have a bad example to warn her away from going down that path, so she keeps indulging the Beast’s impulses by killing her prey and anyone trying to claim her territory.

Eventually it got bad enough that Lettow intervened before the Prince could put a blood hunt on her head (or his).

At first Lettow had a hard problem just keeping her around -- Elisa kept running away because she’d be overwhelmed or pissed off enough. Each time Lettow would give her a few nights then reappear at her burrow and talk her into coming back, because if she stayed out on her own there was no way she wouldn’t wind up killing someone else and he was highkey really worried the Prince would have her executed.

(Dove thought this was hilarious and that Lettow reaped what he sowed. “You left her so she could learn to survive on her own. Well, now she’s trying to do what you wanted her to do!”)

Needless to say, Elisa developed a Reputation among the Kindred of Tucson for being Lettow’s feral, low-humanity brat.

It did reach a turning point. In canon Lettow wouldn’t give her Stellaluna for thirty years, but in this one he had the same idea and gifted her her own famulus -- that little vampire bat she named Stellaluna. A bit of Elisa’s old humanity came back enough at the gesture that he was able to get through to her, and bond with her through teaching her animalism. Her love for Stellaluna, and her being touched at Lettow’s gesture, was a counterbalance to the Beast.

Yep, that’s right, Elisa had an emotional support vampire bat.

He’d been so desperate he’d seriously considered blood binding her to him until they both got her out of it; a blood bond would have made her so attached to him and desperate to please him it would have given her positive emotions to help lift her out of it instead of primal instinct and impulse, and would have given her willpower to fight her Beast at his behest.

Years later, she’d mention to Lettow that she attributed this phase of her life to severe depression. And he’d be like, “no, you weren’t depressed, you were turning into a wight.”

6. Least favourite canon moment of them?

I honestly can’t think of any explicit moments. All that comes to mind are concepts (that Elisa couldn’t bitch at Lettow about the blood bag thing) or moments that aren’t their moment (Lettow’s bizarre response to Jasper’s torture of Modian and his callousness to Dove), or something that isn’t even a moment (lack of more Reremouse-like missions in-game where you get to work with him hands on!).

11. If they aren’t a canon pairing, how would you get them together?

Their relationship didn’t happen as it did in canon.

Basically, canon moved too fast for them. Elisa strongly resented Lettow at least until the midpoint where he offered her the final three jobs, and she was terrified of him for the whole game except the epilogue because she kept waiting for him to throw her under the bus (the first half) or execute her for Diablerie (the second half). Even after he confronted her about Aila, she was mostly convinced that him having her be the bait was his attempt at killing her without having to execute her.

(Years later he’d tell her that that was sincerely not the case -- that he had her be bait because he firmly believed she could survive anything.)

Needless to say, that’s... not a healthy base for a relationship, even though she was crushing damn hard by the end of the game and was genuinely upset that he didn’t even intend to say goodbye.

But they did get together. After Lettow returned from the Middle East Dove wanted Elisa to do some dangerous jobs and was like, “hey, why don’t we get mister fucking invincible to play bodyguard?”

Lettow was genuinely surprised at how emotional she was at his return -- she would’ve been brought to tears if she could cry. They bonded better this time around, as equals. They talked about Aila and laid that to rest -- it was harder for Elisa to talk about than Lettow. Elisa talked about how Aila was still around. Lettow talked about how he resented Aila for leaving him and letting herself get Diablerised. Elisa got to be turned on by watching him beat the crap out of people who tried to hurt her.

But it was a slow burn because, well. Elisa ate his wife so how could she, in good conscience, ever make a move on him? And on Lettow’s side -- he absolutely despised himself and thought he wasn’t good enough for Aila to stay awake or even alive, and if Aila hated him so fucking much she basically killed herself and put an (in his mind) innocent childe at risk to get away from him, how could he possibly make Elisa happy?

Cue months of mutual pining, and occasionally doing couple things like sharing a bed or cuddling without acknowledging them as couple things.

At one point Lettow bites off more than he can chew even by his standards, which Elisa was able to see plain as day at the time. Their usual tactics when overwhelmed was for Lettow to distract the attackers and for Elisa to run, but this time the opposition was so overwhelming that Elisa knew if she ran Lettow would get destroyed, so she refused to run, which only made things more dangerous for both of them. They had a huge argument about it -- Elisa accusing Lettow of trying to kill himself, Lettow accusing Elisa of being an idiot who didn’t trust him to do his job -- but the whole “oh my god the other person almost DIED” helped them realise that

maybe they should stop letting the Aila thing get in the way and just... get together anyway.

Because they loved each other.

So they did.

And they’ve been together ever since.

12. If you had to take them and plunk them into another fandom, what fandom would that be? Why?

Ooof I really had to think about this one.

There’s no one fandom I’d put them in, but I went into a lot of detail with just one so here’s the one I did:

Subnautica -- Human AU. Elisa is a courier on the Aurora delivering classified governmental data, stuff too important to trust to the post or the internet (or extranet, as it would be). She becomes the only survivor of its crash on 4546B. She feels guilty about falling in love with the planet she’s on and genuinely enjoying much of her time there (when she’s not pissing herself in fear) while knowing at home she has a boyfriend/husband who must be absolutely frantic with worry. She keeps a video diary of her survival there and documents the world as best as she can, tries to find other survivors, and wonders if she’ll ever make it out alive and see Lettow and her parents again -- and if she’ll ever be able to come back if she does.

Meanwhile Lettow is losing his shit, alternating between thinking she’s dead and hoping she’s alive. His subplot is him getting in touch with the loved ones of other survivors and harassing Alterra into mounting a rescue; his hopes are shot down, quite literally, with the discovery of the orbital canon and the fate of the Sunbeam. Alterra is refusing to destroy the orbital canon because uhh we don’t want war with ALIENS??? WE’VE GOT NO DIPLOMATIC TIES WITH ANY ALIENS??? DESTROYING IT MIGHT GET US ALL KILLED???,

but they have a satellite in orbit, out of range of the canon, and it’s looking for evidence of survivors. And it’s been picking up activity -- somebody they can’t identify swimming around near a life pod, or moving on one of the islands, or moving around the Aurora. It’s only when she one day takes a nap on the beach near the orbital canon, her face up to the sky, that they’re able to identify the first survivor -- Elisa Mulgrew, government worker.

That picture of her sleeping face and wet hair makes headlines across multiple systems.

So Lettow finds out she’s alive -- but there’s nothing he can do to bring her home. Nothing. And he doesn’t know how long she’ll live for, or how long Alterra will keep up the expense of the satellite. Because over time it’s becoming clear that Alterra is sinking millions into these efforts and there’s no evidence of any other survivors. There’s only camera recordings of one vehicle moving at a time, one person moving at a time, and the only person they’ve ever managed to record always has the same reddish-brown hair as Elisa. Alterra are trying to stop the search because they see it as essentially wasting millions on one person, who’s “only” a courier, who they can’t even save.

The only reason they’ve been humouring people this long is because of the amount of anti-Alterra political sentiment being whipped up in the wake of the disaster and Alterra’s handling of it, and how many people even within Alterra are upset about the whole thing, and how many people are behind the families of the people who were on the Aurora. And with less and less evidence that anyone other than Elisa survived, even they are starting to lose interest.

Yeah Lettow really copes badly in this AU. “Barely gets out of bed each day” badly.

1) the emperor genuinely caring for the safety of his subjects; this is the capital city of his empire and he was safe and sound while so many civilians just died and he immediately tried to guarantee their well-being

2) WangZhi seeing all those beggar orphan kids and probably thinking of himself

3) our ot3 met three years ago actually but they never asked for each other’s names

3.5) do I have to be the ot3 fanfic I want to see in the world

4) tangfan literally being suizhou’s cure... or not cure, but like... suizhou’s worst nightmare is tangfan getting hurt and he only returns to better functioning after tangfan moves back home

5) Dong’er being literally the best girl ever who refused to walk away even when suizhou had his Episodes and she was scared because she loves her Sui da’ge!!!!

6) found family not knowing how to best help suizhou with his ptsd but still trying their best

7) the portrayal of a neurodivergent character!!! That wasn’t for comedic purposes!!! Someone who genuinely loved and cared about his partner knowing that she would probably never understand him and everything he’s done for her because he didn’t communicate like a neurotypical

17) how WangZhi just SMILES when suizhou gently says that “you’ve changed. You’ve become soft.”

18) the cup!!! The damned cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wish they explored WangZhi’s relationship with the crown prince more since they’re basically siblings at this point given how fondly the emperor treats them both... anyway imperial consort loves her son despite how harsh she can seem,,,, “remember to eat well. Youve looked skinnier recently.”

I was definitely worried about the forced hetero storylines but I will say that duoerla literally deserved so much better. Both women set up to be fanzhou’s het love interests deserved so much better than what happened to them.

Anyway I don’t think there are any plans for a season 2 or anything but it would be so cool if they continued to explore WangZhi’s new post, or like the crown prince stepping up to Emperor, or dong’er and tangfan’s newphew growing up, and just more domestic bliss of Suizhou cooking for tangfan

Definitely gives me some cql vibes with the stoic one Falling first, but I similarly believe that the two oblivious geniuses of the show catch on much quicker than their novel counterparts (although I have only heard some tidbits about tsomd novel and have never read it myself)

Ugh I want to see my ot3 solve cases together,,, they’re so badass when they coordinate because they have such good chemistry and know how to play off each other’s strengths

I know fanzhou is the endgame otp but the show definitely frames all of them as a great relationship

Anyway. Good. I cried like a little baby because I feel so much for fanzhou. Suizhou who NEEDS to have somebody to care for, to bring him back to reality and ground him, who makes everything normal and safe and okay—Tangfan being safe and enjoying his cooking means that suizhou hasn’t fucked up and brought disaster everywhere he goes like he is constantly terrified of

And tangfan who has such great character and integrity, who kept a single pair of chopsticks and sold everything else his parents left him for his sister’s dowry, who always wants to protect people too—how he snapped to his senses three years ago to help find survivors, who despite his complaints actually does not care very much at all about his rank... he needs someone to take care of him for once too

(Tangfan respecting boundaries and tugging at the blanket rather than a sleeping suizhou because he knows that an unconscious and vulnerable suizhou should Not be Disturbed at Any Costs)

Anyway I really want to explore how they take care of each other and their terrible workaholic habits and how they raise dong’er,,, I want tangfan and suizhou to talk more about the Trauma and help each other through it,,,, I really want them to just come to terms with how much they have suffered and experienced for each other

Also WangZhi... his parting scene made me think of that dr who quote: do you think I care for you so little that betraying me makes a difference? I hope he and his righthandman learn to trust each other again,,, to talk about what led to the events of the betrayal since it was So Obvious how much the other man loved wangzhi,,, always protecting him when in danger, always rushing to ensure his safety... I hope wangzhi continues to be Soft around him even at the new post and they idk forgive each other and just make up... also you can’t convince me otherwise that he was a little jealous of tangfan due to how often WangZhi called for the detective

Naminè and Dorian Pavus!!

Naminè

Why I like them:

1)The mysteries about her. Why does she have a different voice than Xion or Kairi? Why does she look different from Kairi? Where does she get her powers? Does it mean something that her star charm in Re: CoM now, in retrospect, looks like it is the keychain off the Starlight keyblade? Why does she talk about being alone for so long in Chain of Memories and invoke  the feeling of long standing loneliness and solitude (for real, take a shot every time she says she waited/was alone “so long”), and have a fine tuned grasp of not only self but of powers that the Org probably couldn’t have taught her (though maybe Zexion could have helped a bit since he commands illusions), and,aside from power knowledge, personal knowledge on how exactly how to deconstruct Sora’s past when she had, supposedly, only been created at the same time as Roxas who was still figuring things out in general and barely had any Sora dreams at that time? Even Xion took longer to tap into Sora. Can we trust what we are told about her origins that answers some of these questions or has Kairi also been sheltering more people in her heart? 2) That she’s the embodiment of don’t confuse kindness or softness with weakness 3) That she retains a kind, trusting nature and wants to help despite what her life has been like

Why I don’t: Both not enough and too much done with her at the same time, if that makes sense. She shows up a lot of places, has a deus ex machina feel in some of them, and yet she doesn’t truly add anything in a lot of them or what she does do (like the Coded messages) then needs to be redone/re-explained from other sources, and I say that as someone who loves the character.

Favorite scene: I can’t think of a specific right now, though, a lot of her wistful drawing lives she thinks she can’t have scenes stick with me. Nerdy answer, but some of her explanations of how memories and her powers related to them work and what exactly she is doing to Sora. Lore and characterization implications

Favorite game: Chain of Memories

Favorite line: When she’s telling Sora that one day his light will be what brings everyone together and makes things right.

Favorite outfit: A few of the fandom blue dresses, but alas, there is only one canon outfit. 

OTP: The one part throws me off with a lot of characters because sometimes it just depends on the day. Is this a Namishi day or a Ventus/Naminè day? 

Brotp: Naminè and Sora 

Head Canon: Naminè would be able to fight the same way Relm does in FFVI. There’s a reason that Arrowny is my go-to last name for her 9/10 when I need one. To explain: Relm is an artist and magic user and her signature technique is to do a quick sketch of the monsters which then comes to life and attacks them (Doodle Bob before Spongebob existed). This would be obviously difficult to implement in a game unless it was turn based (though they could make it a special triangle action command ability), but this isn’t strictly for a future game, just something I think could/should be possible in universe and I might implement in a fic sometime. Honestly, every time someone says they want Nam to fight, but not be a keyblade wielder and start debating what she would do, I want to say this, even if I think the fact that she could be/already is a spellcaster is pretty much a given too.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t think evil!Naminè or, at the very least pushed-too-far-and-having-an-outburst Naminè is that much of a leap. IDK, the few people I have talked to about Naminè snapping and going off the rails, even if they were all for it, seemed to treat it as an alien concept, but nobody is arguing she doesn’t have power enough to be immediately dangerous and screw things up to the point where people are not easily fixed. We know, at least in the beginning that she can go morally questionable to be self-serving even if she regrets it/wants to reverse it/has lines she won’t cross later (at least in canon). We know she has potential to have an angry moment and lash out (see: her telling Repliku to stop and immediately taking him out with magic). Even though we see her subservient and pliant with the Org and then DiZ most of the time, that doesn’t mean that’s all there is, and if we want to talk Nobodies and Somebodies… Well, let’s compare  Roxas who demonstrates Sora’s repressed anger more easily but still has all his other traits, such as positivity and caring for friends to the point of...well, there’s no limit to it, nothing he wouldn’t do. Naminè is Kairi’s hidden insecurities and fear sometimes but she would also have Kairi’s desire to just fuck things up/fight/not get left behind just fighting to get out. Just my take. Cute and terrifying could be a thing. Almost anyone who has gotten me to talk about Naminè at length has seen the topic wander to Naminè murder spree or something like it. Aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just want to go ape shit? 

A wish: Well, now it’s the previous answer, but, on a more serious note, I want to see Naminè getting to travel to see all the beauty in the worlds firsthand, to know people like her and she is not just a shadow, to help Ventus regain his memories of KHUX, and to make her own decisions.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Making her into a sacrifice, her personhood only affirmed so she can make the decision to give life up for the greater good (again)

@peggystormborn I think Iris Barry is the exception for a variety of reasons (imo partially race, partially the committment of the writers to the couple). But Oliver and Felicity did A LOT OF triangles before they committed and some of the writing for them was terrible on the romance front. People like to just remember the endgame, but they forget how terrible the road there was (Laurel, Sarah, Oliver marrying another woman, Oliver having a child with another woman, an entire crossover dedicated to a fantasy wedding between Laurel and Oliver, evil!Oliver being married to Kara). Granted in a lot of ways it was because Felicity wasn’t the original OTP and I think it took Marc Guggenheim a long time to finally accept it (I think he’s one of those writers who deep at heart doesn’t really like romance at all, and just eventually only grudingly accepted it, but I think the earlier seasons feel like there was a lot of latent animosity from the writers towards the storyline). 

(and one can debate how Barry/Mirror Iris is something like a triangle, even if it is a triangle made up by writers who desperately want to maintain the “pure” status of an OTP, I mean, as long as you don’t think too hard about the implications of Mirror!Iris [I also think that the fact that Iris and Felicity predominantly don’t have superpowers makes it slightly easier for them to work as a functioning couple])

People thinking that the writers have handled Kara’s Kryptonian relations poorly doesn’t change that if the topic does not interest the writers they are not going to write it (and if they write something really tonedeaf about it, that is usually a sign that they don’t really care about a topic). It’s a very common trait of fanbases to take certain topics more seriously. Criticisms of co-dependency and calls for therapy are very, very common examples of this in a multitude of fandoms. 

You have this all over the Supernatural ending, with people saying “Dean was acting suicidal for years, it sends a horrible message that the show ends up with him dying” and “John Winchester was a horrible father, it’s a horrible message that the show ends up with him being in heaven as part of Dean’s personal heaven and the show never doing a story where Dean recognizes that John screwed him up and fully breaks ties with him” and “the brothers were co-dependant, the show getting rid of all the characters who are not them and making the ending exclusively about them is a horrible message”. 

I think it’s pretty clear that these things weren’t written because the writers intended to send that message, they just clearly see the characters very differently and many things the fans obsess over they see as just not that great a deal. Fans often latch onto characters and stories because they see part of themselves in them and project their own experiences and their emotions about those experiences into those characters (look no further than Lena’s fans and what they think is most important about her character). Fans also love their characters and want their angst to be explored, while most shows just want to keep the plot going. That’s why you will have amost every fandom clamoring how the show should do a therapy plot for their favorite character. To them that makes sense, they love their favorite character, so them sitting on a couch and talking about their feelings of course is going to sound fascinating. Doesn’t mean that the writers tick that way at all. 

Supernatural can show pretty clearly how there can be a fundamental miscommunication between the fans and the creators. Where maybe writers might think that Dean’s dogged loyalty is his most fascinating trait, while fans might think his angsty woobie appeal is his most fascinating trait and his loyalty is boring or just a jumping off point or even actively harmful. Social media and fandom, I think it just has a habit of attracting people who have problems in their real lives and they are likely to project their own problems into these characters, but that does not mean that the writers are anywhere the same headspace (particularly in regards to how abusive or co-dependant a relationship is, I think just like with John Winchester, writers are way more likely to have a more positive view towards relationship and stories like that, because to them, those relationships are something good in their world because they are drivers of drama, providers of dramatic scenes). 

And I think history has shown, no matter how annoying it is to the fans, new showrunners just will not be beholden to the themes and messages of previous showrunners. They will pay tribute to whatever part of previous seasons they like, but they are likely going to come in with their own spin, their biases and their own takes of the characters. 

(for what it’s worth, I theorize season 4 started out with the plan for a sister season, to explore (via Red Kara and Elseworld and Amnesia) what is Alex without Kara, what is Kara without Alex and they just sort of lost the main plot somewhere in the middle between introducing Nia, introducing Lex and poorly thought out political metaphor) 

Right now, what little we know of season 6 makes one hopeful that it could have a significant Alex and thusly sister focused plot, with Alex playing around with being a vigilante and there being rumors of another young sisters episode. 

What is interesting about this is that either of Alex most likely developments, Alex becoming a hero in her own right OR Alex finally getting her baby and family provide interesting jumping off points for Kara to reflect on her own life. This does not mean that the writers will actually take this opportunity seriously, but it is at least possible. 

Alex has been a physical fighter working with Kara since forever, but her getting her own costume could be a signal that she is getting her own hero identity. Alex being her own heroic person rather than just the no-name who supports Kara ideally should be an interesting change up in their dynamics. Either with Kara cheerleading and supporting Alex they way Alex has always supported her or with Kara realizing that maybe she has to step back a little and let Alex be her own hero and trust her that she can handle things on her own (potentially culminating with Kara leaving the protection of the city and Earth in the hands of Alex). 

I could picture Kara having a relationship with William and eventually rejecting him symbolically but I just really wouldn’t expect it to be about Argo. But I could picture a plot where seeing Alex thrive as a hero makes Kara think she has the freedom to kick back and focus on her romantic relationship or focus on being just Kara Danvers for a while (and in the end realizing that that is not enough for her, I just would expect this NOT to be about Kara Zor-El but about Supergirl, Kara realizing that she needs to be Supergirl to be happy even if being Supergirl has made her life more complicated in many ways). 

On the other hand, if Alex were to finally get her child wish fulfilled it could a be a good story to explore what the equivalent is for Kara (while with Alex, she has always been protective of Kara, so her having somebody else to raise and be protective over would also provide good emotional dramatic potential). 

But it could just as equally be that they parallel Alex being happy with a baby and a girlfriend as their little family with Kara just getting William as the nice unproblematic understanding boyfriend, forming their own family unit albeit without a child. Or it could be Kara just getting gratification of being a supportive and loving aunt. You never know. Supernatural shows that just because the fans are convinced that the show will go one way (Family is about more than blood ties! The show will end with showing how Sam and Dean have evolved beyond “the two of us against the world!” and their family unit now includes Eileen, Castiel and Jack) doesn’t mean that the writers see it the same way. 

It’s very interesting in how this reaction mirrors the reaction to the How I Met Your Mother Finale where the writers thought it made sense to circle back to the start and most of the general audience disliked it because they felt the characters had developed beyond the original premise. But it still shows how this particular pattern of thinking is one that writers are very likely to fall into. 

Finales often have a way of exposing whether one’s (or even the audience in general) perception of the characters and their relationships and perceived moral takeaways align with the one’s of the writers. I don’t even think that that is something that can just be “fixed” by telling writers “don’t be the Game of Thrones finale, don’t be the HIMYM finale”. If powerful writers just have a certain perception of characters, that’s just how they see them and they can’t just break out of. 

I guess one can argue that maybe it’s a sign of poor writing (even if it might be good business sense) if a show supports such a variety of readings till the very end (are we watching a story about co-dependant siblings which should end with them lovingly and supportively letting each other go? or are we watching a show about siblings through thick and thin, more powerful than anything?), but I think in some cases it just arises naturally because of the way fans can project themselves into characters in ways that was not intended by the writers and that can’t fully be controlled by them (and since those projections are heavily influenced by people’s very varied personal experiences you also can’t just please everyone).

Hyena - Ep 14

Hahaha, Hyena’s really got all of us viewers swooning and losing our minds over the leads holding hands and I’m all for it.  You’d think Geum Ja had proposed to Hee Jae by the way we are reacting to it lol.

Upon first viewing, I enjoyed the episode but didn’t think there was enough otp interaction.  However, when I started capping and gif-ing the episode, I realized there were actually so many good moments between Hee Jae and Geum Ja.

I mean:

Hello?  Hee Jae just got fired and who’s the first person he calls?  Geum Ja of course.  And I love that she tells him to be confident and not let them think that they won.  Unlike Hee Jae, Geum Ja is used to being screwed over by the world and being rejected.  I love that she’s so strong and not phased by any of this, even if she’s super pissed. And her words are exactly what Hee Jae needed to hear.

And of course, THIS SCENE!  Even though he tries to put up a brave front, he can’t hide his fear.  Song & Kim is everything he’s worked for in his life and he’s never experienced such a fall from grace.  He’s always been at the top, whether because of his own skills or because of his family ties.  Now, neither of those things matter and his future is unknown.  I love that Geum Ja sees his hand shaking and just reaches out to hold his hand without saying anything.  God, it’s such a simple gesture, but it’s so comforting and reassuring to Hee Jae.   It tells him that everything will be ok and that he’s not alone in this; she’s here, too.  Ahhh, and it’s everything I’ve been wanting to see from Geum Ja and Hee Jae.  She’s the one taking the first step this time and comforting Hee Jae.

I also loved this parallel between Ms. Boo and Hee Jae.  She clearly has feelings for Hee Jae and has shown interest before, but she’s never been pushy about it and I appreciate that.  See, you CAN have an unrequited crush on someone and NOT be a psycho about it.

Oh girl, he sure does.

I think he’s still liking someone from afar.  But then again, maybe said someone isn’t so far away anymore.  I mean...have you seen that hand holding? 

Aw, that’s probably the nicest way he could have turned her down.  Again, this parallels the scene in an earlier episode where Hee Jae tells Geum Ja to use him.  However, unlike Hee Jae and Geum Ja, Hee Jae and Ms. Boo do not share an intimate relationship.  Therefore, he does not accept her help (and in connection, her feelings).  Geum Ja only accepted Hee Jae’s offer because he was someone she could let herself be vulnerable with.  To accept someone’s help/”use” them, means that you: (1) trust the person; and (2) can show your “weakness” to that person and let them in.

Mm, so many dirty things I could say about this.  So, so, many things.

And after they finished their beers, they went upstairs and banged it out.  I mean, what?

Ugh, what I did not like in this episode was Gi Hyuk.  Ms. Boo’s judgmental face was my own face every time he showed up with his lame excuses.  Ugh, traitor. Loser. Pathetic. Next.

Ha Chan Ho: Where’s mom and dad?  I want them back!

Ha Chan Ho is a terrible piece of shit but I find it funny that he’ll only listen to the two lawyers who’ve ever gone against his wishes.

21. How have they changed each other for the better/for the worse?

Well, let’s get the obvious out of the way. Higuchi has taught Akutagawa how to be gentle- not necessarily in all aspects (seeing as he isn’t exactly known for being a gentle member of the mafia, not that there really is one that’s still alive,) but in personality? If that makes sense? Like when you accept love into your life it really does change you, at least around those you care about. You’re gentler, happier, more considerate- so maybe she and Gin notice that he just looks like he feels lighter. Chuuya also notices he’s just a smidge friendlier with him, which weird him out but he doesn’t want to jinx it.

I feel like Akutagawa would teach Higuchi to depend on him less. He already knows she’s independent (considering her work hasn’t killed her yet) so it’s not that she can’t, and he understands being devoted, but as he grows more interested and maybe even in love with her he realizes that it’s better for both of them if she learns to be on her own. He starts with just straight up abandoning her, which puts their relationship on the rocks, but soon he just tries to talk it out. “We need to be able to trust each other, even when one of us is away.” Eventually she takes his words to heart and she’s more of her own person. (It’s a good thing that person happens to be a person Akutagawa likes.)

For the worse, though? Higuchi spoils Akutagawa and lets him get away with a lot. Even if she does learn to be more independent, she just isn’t the type to try and change him past letting her in a little more. If Akutagawa decides he doesn’t want to talk, she doesn’t force him to and he bottles it all in. If Akutagawa has too short of a temper, she thinks it’s her fault and she is more careful. She does try to tell him that he can be more careful around her, more open, but there’s only so much she feels she’s capable at getting through to him.

Akutagawa, on the other hand, doesn’t do much for her confidence. Her independence, yeah, that helped a little, but he still isn’t one to change the way he does things for some girl. If they’re together, it’s because she liked him before she tried to change him, so why should he? If Higuchi tries to persuade him to take on less work or something, he gets very irritable very quickly. He’s been taught that in order to get what he wants and to maintain stability, he has to keep working and trying harder- as much as he needs a break, he isn’t going to take one unless Mori threatens everything he’s worked to build and, even then, somebody would have to hold him down. He’s got a short temper and if she crosses a line, she can expect some short responses. He rarely yells at her anymore- he’ll never admit how much he hates how sad she looks afterwards- but that doesn’t mean he isn’t angry. This, on top of the fact that he isn’t really one for dishing out compliments without being prompted (and even then, it’s nothing to write home about), makes it difficult for Higuchi to really build her confidence and positive self-image.

Akutagawa is very stuck in his ways until he determines he needs to change. He doesn’t mean to stop her own personal growth and probably doesn’t even realize that’s what he’s doing. Still, they’re both gentle with the other and it’s a nice solace they can find in each other because a job in the mafia is never easy.

In alphabetical order, bc I can’t make an actual top list ranking them, but I still need some kind of order.

Alice Fortescue - The one baby I played the longest and in most situations and groups. My actual baby. She is the mother hen of Hogwarts, has a knack to become a martyr for the causes she believes in, she fiercely loves her friends and family and suffers I think one of the most tragic fates in HP altogether.

Darcy Palmer - (tw death) Translator and interpreter who traveled the world and fell in love with a woman high up in a gang (unknowing of all of that) that resulted in her witnessing the murder of the woman she loved, almost dying herself and her own sister getting killed in the process as well. Now she has to make her way through life in witness protection under a completely new name and identity, separated from the rest of her family while having to deal with her demons in the dead of the night.

Glenda Chittock - My tiny baby who started out with her nose in between the pages and who felt more comfortable around books than around people. She barely did anything, barely experienced everything. And then an illness of her little brother opens her eyes and makes her realize that she has to go out and try things. Ans slowly she opens up, can communicate with people more. She has a never-ending knowledge that she always spurs out at people whenever she is nervous. She first works for the Daily Prophet as a journalist, and then eventually realizes that while her rambling doesn’t work in writing, she can’t get her points across, in a medium where she can talk, she can be captivating and interesting, hence why she starts doing her own radio show - which is the only canon fact we know about her.

Heidi Bergen - (tw abuse) Oh boy, where do I even start. This baby went through so much shit in her life to get to where she is. Happy first few years, then being separated from her dickhead father and older brother, her mother practically abandoned her little sister and her so she had to raise her sister. All of this turned into anger that she didn’t know how to handle, isolating her from everyone except for her own sister. She was angry at the world and the world was angry right back at her. She found a release in boxing, but the attitude and the need to push most people away remained - while also clinging to any romantical partner she had with tooth and nail, desperate to find somebody who wouldn’t leave her in the end. Resulted in her being in an abusive relationship that she could barely get out of and after she ran off to halfway across the country to make sure she is really far away from the dude. She���s a kickass criminal defense lawyer and in different versions of her she was either fighting with any kind of clients or specifically protecting crime syndicates.

Isabel de la Vega - My narcissist, self-centered merm whose backstory resembles the little mermaid’s story in many ways, but is so completely different from that fictional character. She arrives to Soapberry, a town where the supernaturals can openly walk around and be themselves, running from her past mistakes and failures and tries to make a new life for herself while also having a superiority in her, a constant need to be right, be the center of attention and not share anything personal about herself.

Alice Fortescue/Amos Diggory (@theeriinyes) - my first Alice ship that started out as a kind of “oh we won’t go there because it’s not canon” and ended up with us absolutely going there because we couldn’t help it. They grew up together, fell in love slowly. He was a playboy, she was the mother hen. He wanted nothing more than to keep his family safe, she wanted to fight in the war beyond reason or logic. They loved each other more than anything and it’s been years and years and I’m still not over them honestly. They had a baby in the mids of the war and after Alice suffered the fateful ending of hers, Amos visits her every day, hoping that she’d wake up one day and remember him and their family. And now lemme just go and weep.

Ariel/Eli - My first ever big otp in RPing. Ariel was my OUAT indie who was struggling with having her memories back, dealing with the real world and the fairy world being so different and wanting to leave Storybrooke to explore and have adventures while not being able to because of the border-amnesia thing, while Eli was a wandered who had a shadow inhabiting his body since he was a kid, they were one and a same at this point and the two of them accidentally met and fell in love and oh boy was it beautiful. I loved them so freaking much and even though I’ve lost touch with the player of Eli since then and it took me incredibly long to even find Ariel’s old blog, I still think about them sometimes and weep over how beautiful they were.

Darcy Palmer/Diego Chavez (@diegojaimechavez) - Honestly they came as a surprise I think to both of us because we originally planned to have a completely platonic relationship between these two, but then they both went and had feelings for one another and there was no stopping them. “Enemies” to friends to lovers where they were forced to work together considering Diego was charged with keeping Darcy safe, so even though they were constantly fighting with each other, they couldn’t just stay away due to their situation, and then slowly they started opening up to one another and realizing their own errors and finding the good and lovable in the other and now they are dummies in love who refuse to admit or say it out loud but still have such huge trust and respect for each other that nobody is breaking that.

Carlota Fuentes/Gianluca Romano (@pedrazamaria​) - I mean, any of our babies could be on here, I could have really just made a list of top 5 just out of our babies but I restrained myself lol. But these two. One is the daughter of the leader of a huge gang while the other is a drug dealer in said gang. They didn’t really notice each other until one night they hook up and then they fall in love without meaning to. One never really looked for love but found it with him, the other was never considered worthy of love until she came along and they were happy. And then shit went down, torture and hatered and misunderstanding and they are pulled apart and for years they barely even interact, only for a family tragedy to bring them close again. Him hurting her on accident, without intent, and then her hurting him back in ways she knows would cause most pain because she is trying to protect her heart. It’s a mess, it’s tragical, they probably should stay away from each other, but they love each other too much to not gravitate back to each other sooner or later.

Alice Fortescue/Evan Mulciber - Unfortunately I can’t tag anyone here either, and I know this looks weird and unnatural to anyone who knows just the tiniest bit about the Marauders Era, but I swear it worked and it was beautiful. Alice was the one who would give the benefit of the doubt to anyone, Evan was the misunderstood antihero, ruthless to most but fiercely protective over those whom he considered family. They dated and were arranged to be married. And then the Mary incident happened and Alice broke things off, but the arranged marriage stayed. They were platonic, but Alice still saw the good in him and he still considered her family. He was impulsive and she tried to think through things, he was blamed for so many things he didn’t actually commit and she saw through the lies and knew he wasn’t to blame. It was complicated and simple all at the same time. And as weird and strange as this pairing sounds, I loved them so, so, so incredibly much.

16. How long have you been roleplaying?

It’s really fucking insane to write it down, but it’s been close to 10 years now. I started RPing around the end of S1 of Vampire Diaries. It was on LiveJournal, I brought Anna back from the dead and played her in a Hungarian RP. After that, I transitioned to Tumblr and did an Ariel OUAT indie for a long while before I fell into the world of groups and the rest is history.

19. What do you miss about old roleplay? (Roleplay before 2017?)

The amount of time I had to dedicate to it. I actually started working in 2017, before that I was in uni and high school and I remember having so much more time on my hand. And with that I miss the speed that I could move plots along. These days a lot of the time I can only get through my replies and then I already have to go to sleep or have other things to do, while before I could just do back and forths almost daily and that was so great. (Then again, back then my replies were mostly like one paragraph long, now I prefer long-ass paras, so that might be a contributing factor in it too.)
