Welcome to the neighbourhood
Way back in 2001, I wrote a city guide titled "Athens By Neighborhood." In 2020, a publisher approached me about a new edition to be published the following year -- a sort of 20th anniversary edition that also coincided with the (planned) Greece 2021 hoopla. I was excited at first (it's always exciting when a publisher wants something) but when I realised that not only had the city changed in those two decades, but that I had too. Not fundamentally, but rather how I saw Athens and how its layered history fit together in the present. I began exploring that in a new way through fiction and a research degree. I also wanted to be more in the present. Enter Tumblr -- and the decision to microblog my daily encounters with the neighbourhood (albeit more occasionally than daily...we'll see.

Q: Hank, how cool are you really, though?
A: Well, not very. I finally got around to scoping out all the neighborhoods on this list and trying to figure out which ones I've all been in. To even spend an hour on this article, as I just did, is rather uncool, being that I'm too old for this sort of thing, mostly, though you're also never too old to run around in a leopard print thong and all that... so I'll have to buy my first this year or for 2024.
Vesterbro - Copenhagen Mile End - Montréal Verdun - Montréal Neukölln - Berlin West End - Vancouver Silver Lake - Los Angeles Little India - Singapore Avondale - Chicago Cours Julien - Marseille Cais do Sodré - Lisbon Coconut Grove - Miami Noord - Amsterdam Ximending - Taipei Pagrati - Athens Santurce - San Juan Barrio Escalante - San José Ubud - Bali Haut-Marais - Paris
18 out of 51, it looks like. Others I may have been in, but don't count if I wasn't cognisant of it or don't remember. What's interesting about this list is that a lot of the neighborhoods they choose as 'cool' are exactly the ones no tourist would stumble into, and yet are located right next door to all the action.
For example -- I was living just blocks from Stoneybatter in Dublin and I walked just feet from Ridgewood, NYC and Letná in Prague, but just from looking at a map, it seemed like 'oh, there's nothing there'.
I may have been in the world's coolest neighborhood in Guadalajara, but I can't say for sure. I think I was, since I was all over the place just a few blocks from it, but 'think' does not count, and anyway, I'm sure if Ian and I were there, all we did was wander around and take pics of things like that cow glued to the side of a building... certainly I was not travelling Mexico with some newfangled device called 'a smart phone' that simply pulls up beautifully easy maps.
Well, of course there obviously would be something there...
I wonder if this list is in part a concerted effort to get tourists more off-the-beaten-path, to spread out more to reduce the crowding and patronise charming shops and restaurants in neighborhoods they could easily visit if just given a little push...
Others, such as these locations chosen in Auckland, London, Frisco, Sydney and Toronto would not give support to that conjecture of mine, as these are clearly spaces that wouldn't be of much use to most visitors, in my opinion, unless you're really willing to take some time out to go to what is halfway to suburbia or a recovering warehouse district for renters...
Huh. Well, I'd like to spend some more time on this, but time is limited for all of life's curiousities, and I want to try Haitian food for the first time in about an hour. I may have had Haitian before, but again, if you don't remember, it doesn't seem to count... in some ways I'm probably senile already, yes.
You see, kids, I did much of my travelling before smart phones were really a thing... the old-fashioned way, well, I felt lucky if I was actually able to land in a city... and getting around one, fuck if I even know how I did it without maps and such... I guess I just figured how lost can you get...
Tere was none of this 'look up the coolest neighborhood on the internet and use your phone to go there' stuff. So while I'm happy for you that it's easier to be cool now than it ever was before, I also cannot be convinced that we are starting from the same starting line that your capitalist self probably wishes to narrate that we are...
Capitalism is not cool, so if you are a few notches more capitalist-ideologue at heart than me, you're probably disqualified on that basis... not merely because I'd disqualify you, mind you, but because capitalism tends to make you based, square, snooty, dorky, averse to grit... all sorts of bad personality modifications that will end your coolness right quick and well.

Golden Visa in Greece and the best areas to invest in
Greece is a country with a rich history, beautiful landscapes, and a promising economic outlook. The country's government has recognized the potential of attracting foreign investment to boost its economy, and one of the ways they are doing this is through the Golden Visa Program. In this article, we will explore why foreign investors should consider getting a Golden Visa in Greece.
What is a Golden Visa?
A Golden Visa is a residence permit that grants the holder the right to live and work in Greece. This program was introduced in 2013 to attract foreign investment to the country. To be eligible for the program, an applicant must invest a minimum of €250,000 in real estate in Greece.
Benefits of a Golden Visa in Greece
Visa-free     travel
With a Golden Visa, the holder can travel visa-free within the Schengen area, which includes 26 European countries. This is an excellent opportunity for those who want to explore Europe without having to worry about visa requirements.
Residency     permit
The Golden Visa program allows the holder to live and work in Greece, as well as travel freely within the Schengen area for up to five years. This means that the holder can enjoy all the benefits of living in Greece, such as access to healthcare and education, while also being able to travel and do business within the European Union.
Real     estate investment
The minimum investment requirement for a Golden Visa is €250,000 in real estate in Greece. This is an excellent opportunity for investors who are looking for a safe and stable investment. The real estate market in Greece has been steadily growing in recent years, and property prices are relatively low compared to other European countries.
Potential     return on investment
Apart from the benefits of living and working in Greece, a Golden Visa holder may also benefit from the potential return on their investment. The real estate market in Greece has been showing signs of growth in recent years, and property prices are expected to continue to rise in the future.
Citizenship
After living in Greece for seven years with a Golden Visa, the holder may be eligible to apply for Greek citizenship. This means that they will have all the rights and privileges of a Greek citizen, including the ability to vote and access to free healthcare and education.
Conclusion
The Golden Visa program is an excellent opportunity for foreign investors who are looking to invest in real estate and establish a presence in Europe. Greece offers a stable and safe investment opportunity, as well as the potential for growth and a high quality of life. With the benefits of visa-free travel, a residency permit, and the potential for citizenship, the Golden Visa program is an attractive option for those looking to invest in Greece.
