To the person who suggested the TRio being in the Papa Ingo AU... Oh... OH! Do you have any idea what you have wrought!??? Because I don't know how many people know about Jessie's exceedingly tragic backstory.... We get to see James and Meowth's tragic backstories in the anime, but we only get glimpses of Jessie's... You have to look to The Birth of Mewtwo radio drama (which came out around when Pokemon the First Movie came out) to actually see (well... hear) it. Because while we've been talking about Giovanni in the Lord of the Flies variant of the Papa Ingo AU... There's actually reason to think that Giovanni and Jessie would have known one another at the ages they would be at for this AU (Giovanni being a teenager going through his biker punk phase and Jessie being somewhere maybe... 4-6 years old...? Ages are negotiable.) Obscure Giovanni trivia GO!
So for anyone who doesn't know, in the Pokemon anime's universe, Giovanni actually inherited the role of leader of Team Rocket from his mother, Madame Boss. (This is actually the backstory that I prefer to imagine Giovanni having. He didn't become Boss of Team Rocket so much because he particularly desired wealth and power for himself, but rather he was reared for it and just happens to be REALLY good at being a (criminal) leader!) And Madame Boss' right hand woman was Miyamoto- Jessie's mother. Giovanni's mom seems to have been exceedingly greedy, and there is reason to think that Jessie was growing up in abject poverty, even when her mother was around. But in spite of that, it really does seem that Miyamoto loved her daughter more than anything in the world and was trying her very best to raise Jessie with what little they had. But after finding a recording of Mew, Miyamoto was sent to South America to find and capture Mew. In spite of her best efforts, Miyamoto has yet to capture Mew and is therefore unable to return home to see her daughter. Miyamoto knows that Jessie's grown up in her absence, and yet she's still out there, searching for Mew.
In any case, during this radio drama, Madame Boss actually does mention Giovanni (she seems to really dislike him), so we know for a fact that he was around at the time. But he would have likely been a fair bit older than Jessie. But because their mothers were so close, it's not a stretch of the imagination at all to think that they may have known one another. Maybe even been friends! In fact, it's not an uncommon headcanon that one of the reasons that Giovanni bothers keeping the TRio around is because of his history with Jessie. I like to imagine that Giovanni would sometimes babysit Jessie when her mother was out on missions.
So this just makes me imagine that in the Lord of the Flies variation of the Papa Ingo AU that when things start going to shit, Giovanni just appoints Jessie as his second in command as he starts taking up a leadership position among the children.

Yes!! Throw Jessie and James in!! I completely forgot that both Jessie and James had tough childhoods in their own ways (Jessie especially like ouch)
OP thank you for sharing all of that, that’s all new info to me! That’s really sad for Jessie and her mom, but it would be interesting to implement that into the AU and have Giovanni and Jessie be there together and previously know each other! I’d really like to see that actually. I never talk about them but I really like Jessie and James as characters, and would like to see them included ^^
And kid James going from a nice pampered rich life to ancient Hisui would be funny to see too!!!

Banana Fish x Pokemon AU? What if Papa Dino and Yut Lung's groups are like Pokemon mafias.
I am laughing so hard lol😂
Dino would run a Pokemon trafficking ring of sorts and he would 100% kidnap them straight from the wild to sell.
He would have a Meowth or fire type.
Yut would run Rocket headquarters and you can’t convince me otherwise.
He would also loathe Pokemon and refuse to keep one as a pet, but Sing would convince him to catch one (shadow type obviously) and then he would end up loving it.

Papa Meowth AU: Does the group still end up going to Hollywood? If so, does Meowth reveal some of his backstory?
Actually I've had this whole scene in my head for a while now.
So Meowth can't exactly slink off during the premiere in this universe since he's part of the main group, so instead he does it the night after. Maria takes the form of an Espion (to explain away any Psychic-Type powers she might use on instinct) and follows him, since she's noticed how off he's been since they got here and has heard the story of why he can talk like a human.
In this version he's more-or-less gotten over Meowsie thanks to having Maria and his time in Pallet Town, so he's actually here to catch up with his old Gang rather than chase after an old flame. Also even if he was still going after her she's not here because she didn't get left behind by her trainer this time. This is absolutely an excuse for me to not have to write Meowsie, because I Do Not Like Her.
Anyway, the reunion goes decently well (with some teasing that his kid apparently evolved before he did), until they're attacked by a rival gang made up of Maschiff and a Mabosstiff. Maria gets pinned down by the Boss because Psychic Type and Meowth manages to figure out Thundershock (the first time he's managed to learn a move since learning how to speak) to get it off her, then proceeds to actually defeat it in a battle (because this still needed his First Real Win even if it's against a different opponent for different reasons) and force the dogs to retreat.

In the Papa Meowth AU Maria's the one who finds and helps Serena at summer camp instead of Ash. That's also where she comes up with the name "Maria," since obviously she's not gonna reveal that she's a Mew to some girl she found in the woods, especially so soon after the incident that brought her and Meowth to Pallet Town in the first place. Though she does use Heal Pulse instead of a makeshift bandage, so Serena at least knows she's Definitely Not Normal.
This still leads to Serena developing a crush because of course it does.

So I've decided that in the Papa Meowth au, Pikachu is intrigued enough by just how weird Ash, Maria and Meowth are that he goes along willingly (it helps that there isn't any communication barrier whatsoever) and no rocks are thrown. But the Spearow still attack because...well...
Meowth: How does one Pikachu make every boid on Route One have poisonal beef wit 'im!?
Pikachu, completely unapologetic: <Natural talent.>

So based on my Teams post obviously the Papa Meowth version of Mewtwo Strikes Back has a lot of changes. But one of the main ones that didn't get revealed in that post is that there's no Mew suddenly appearing to fight Mewtwo.
Because we already have a Mew there who's very understandably fucking pissed that he's hurting her family and trying to destroy the world, and given the circumstances doesn't particularly care about learning or understanding his reasons for doing so.
And she's a Trainer, and a Street Cat at heart, so even if she hasn't got All The Moves Ever like older Mews and she's not as strong as the World's Most Powerful Pokemon (verification pending), she fights smart, she fights focused, and she fights dirty.

Papa Meowth Pokemon Teams: Kanto/Orange Islands Edition
I said I'd do it. I'm lumping in the Orange Islands because there's very few catches there, either in canon or in the AU. There's a couple that are minor spoilers for the changes I'm making to the Movies, but they're pretty minor changes, especially in comparison to Johto where thing's really start going off the rails, so it's no big deal.
I'll briefly when and how a Pokemon gets caught or evolves if it significantly deviates from canon (so all the new guys obviously)
Ash
Pikachu (naturally)
Catterpie>Metapod>Butterfree (thanks to being able to study Maria's teleportation abilities, Professor Oak was able to create portable Pokeball Transfer Devises more advanced than canon's "only 6 Pokemon" teleporters, so Butterfree can be On Call even while traveling with the flock. Because fuck Season 1's "all the strong Pokemon are released or disobedient" policy)
Pidgeotto>Pidgeot
Oddish (Gets caught via a battle a little after they leave AJ (that guy with the Sandshrew from Path to the Pokemon League). As much as she likes the group, the chaos that follows them everywhere is ultimately too overwhelming for her and she willingly gets traded at the St. Anne trainer cruise before everything goes pear-shaped. she does give a good showing at Vermilion Gym as a nice sendoff though.)
Bulbasaur
Charmander>Charmeleon>Charizard (Thanks to Ash being able to understand Pokemon, they're able to work out their issues a lot sooner)
Krabby>Kingler (Since he's Ash's only water type until Totodile in this timeline, he gets used sooner and more often than in canon so he evolves during the group's visit to Lavender Town (which once again uses the Marowak game story instead of "Ash Fucking Dies And It's Played For Laughs))
Hatenna>Hattrem>Haterene (the Pokemon that Oddish got traded for. She's very atypical for a Hatenna and actually likes how loud and energetic is. She evolves during the battle with Erica (Ash doesn't get banned in this timeline but does still dress as Ashley. According to Maria and Meowth it's apparently just a thing he does sometimes) and into Haterene during Power of One. She mainly fights by unfurling her hair and turning it into various constructs, helped by using Growth to give herself more material to work with, alongside a frankly absurd level of Move variety)
Cubone>Marowak (The Pokemon Tower Cubone. Evolves during the Indigo Conference while facing a Cubone belonging to Ritchie, who also evolves during that match)
Muk
15 Tauros
Doduo (caught in the Safari Zone)
Venomoth (Also Safari Zone)
Snorlax
Not a Pokemon, but Ash is also given a Pidgeotite and Keystone by Slowking as thanks for his help in Power of One. And he can actually make use of them since Pidgeot both has the same setup as Butterfree and even if she didn't she lives basically right next door to Pallet Town.
Maria
Meowth
Clefairy>Clefable (the martial arts obsessed one. Asks to join after the Mt. Moon incident and Maria buys Moon Stones for her and another of her Pokemon at the League)
Squirtle>Wartortle (evolves during the Gringey City incident)
Voltorb>Electrode (caught either a little before or a little after Surge's Gym battle. Evolves while battling the Rockets during Beauty and the Beach)
Hitmonlee (due to Primeape being a Team Rocket Pokemon, The Punchy Pokemon goes pretty differently, with Maria entering Clefairy (who sets a personal challenge to not use any Fairy Type moves), Team Rocket entering Primeape (more like Primeape enters himself and dares Jessie to argue) and Gary showing up and entering his Wartortle. Clefairy ends up winning and a wild Hitmonlee begs to become her pupil after being awestuck by her skill)
the other 15 Tauros
Dratini (not the one the Safari Zone guy is friends with)
Nidorino>Nidoking (Safari Zone. He's the other Moon Stone evolution at the League)
Magmar (so I was misremembering when I said that both Ash and Maria got two non-Tauros Pokemon at the SZ. Maria got three)
Vulpixtwo (Did I stutter?)
Lapras (portable transfer devices strike again)
Also Tracy finds a Mega Stone during The Underground Round Up and gives it to Maria because he guesses that it's probably to do with Electrode given they're in Voltorb/Electrode Territory and she's the one who actually has an Electrode. Professor Oak ends up confirming that it is in fact Electrodite, the first to be discovered in fact, and gives her a Keystone so she can make use of it (and so he can study what exactly a Mega Electrode is like). Yes, I'm including my own Fanmade Megas. That's the least of the Made Up Shit I'll be adding quite frankly.
Misty
Staryu
Starmie
Goldeen
Beedrill (yes it's the same one as in the Streamer AU. Because I can.)
Horsea>Seadra (evolves during A Ship Full of Shivers)
Psyduck>Golduck (Evolves during Mewtwo Strikes Back as a side-effect of being cloned 53 times due to accidentally making the cloning chamber malfunction with his clumsiness)
Egg>Togepi
Psyducktwo-through-fiftyfour (they have declared Golduck their leader and now they're Misty's problem. This is what she gets for laughing about the Tauros Herd situation when it happened.)
Poliwag
Brock
Onix
Geodude
Zubat
Vulpix>Ninetails (evolves at some point during his time at Professor Ivy's Lab)
Aerodactyl (Yes That Aerodactyl)
Drowsee (A wild Pokemon that somehow got mixed up in Butch and Cassidy's fake Daycare in The Breeding Center Secret and decides to go with Brock after things get cleared up)
Team Rocket
Porygon (similar to Meowth, he doesn't have a Trainer and is considered an Agent alongside the humans)
Jessie
Ekans>Arbok
Diglett (Caught after the Cerulian Gym incident because Jessie and James decide that their team needs to expand and diversify at least a bit, especially if they want to stand a chance against Pikachu. It's mostly Porygon's idea.)
Primeape (I have explained this)
Lickitung
Venusaur (specifically a really big pink one the TRio found on Pinkan Island)
James
Koffing>Weezing
Shiny Magnemite (caught at the same time as Diglett for the same reasons. He's somehow psychic (both in terms of Moves and in the human psychic powers sense) and is Completely Insane. Personality is heavily inspired by Bill Cypher, but significantly toned down both due to not being nearly as powerful and me needing him to fit with the rest of the TRio morality-wise)
Magikarp>Gyarados (does not mess this up in this timeline and manages to actually keep it, as I mentioned in the Magikarp Salesman post.)
Growlie (Growlithe>Arcanine) (I am not leaving him with James's horrible parents. Somebody in the group happened to have a Fire Stone for whatever reason and the whole group uses it to evolve Growlie, blow a hole through a wall, and ride him into the sunset)
Weepinbell>Victreebel
Lileep (was apparently mixed in with all the dormant Kabuto in Shell Shocked and James catches it while the island falls apart)
Also Sir Laurence's Airship in Power of One is more-or-less intact after the fact and the TRio somehow manage to steal it with plans to turn it into a mobile base.
Tracey
The only real difference is that they evolve Scyther into Scizor to counteract his old age.
Timmy Turner
...Okay let me explain.
You know how I keep mentioning the whole thing with Squirtle Abilities getting scrambled as a side-effect of the space-time continuum nearly collapsing? That wasn't the only side effect. There's also cracks still present in it that are leaking Information and Energy and Spirit into the Pokemon universe, which is the damage that Arceus has been working to fix ever since the incident happened. They don't mind the stuff that's coming through the cracks, but the cracks themselves are absolutely a problem. This is entirely an excuse for crossover characters like Bill!Magnemite and Timmy.
In terms of who Timmy is in this universe, he's a trainer who started a couple months before Ash, and is working towards becoming Kanto's very first Fairy-Type Gym Leader. He's a reoccurring character, but not part of the main group. They first meet him during the Mt. Moon Incident.
Now on to his Pokemon:
Cosmo (Ralts>Kirlia) (Timmy's Starter. Revealed to have evolved during Mewtwo Strikes Back (he's there because one of his friends has a Venusaur and was invited) He's just as overpowered and dumb as you'd expect.)
Wanda (Jigglypuff>Wigglytuff) (Caught before Timmy's debut. revealed to have evolved during The Ninja Poke-Showdown because his friend with the Venusaur (I'm probably gonna go with Tootie) is a student at Koga's Gym)
Brick (Clefairy>Clefable) (Caught at the same time as Maria's Clefairy. Revealed to have evolved during Clefairy Tales)
Trample (Tauros) (Caught at some point before The Flame Pokemon-athon)
Slappy (Mr. Mime) (Revealed during Mewtwo Strikes Back)
Douglas (Galarian Weezing) (Revealed during MSB)
Bitsy (Drapion) (Also MSB)

Papa Meowth: Other than Squirtle, does Maria catch any other Pokémon that Ash catches in canon? If you don't want to go through the whole series at once (completely understandable) then just Kanto will do.
Yeah there's a few of Ash's canon Pokemon that Maria gets instead of him.
Maria gets: Squirtle Half the Tauros herd (this also frees them up to each get two other Pokemon in the Safari Zone since they actually have spare 'Balls) Lapras Cyndaquil Phanpy Snivy Sewaddle Roggenrola (the reason I'm giving her so many of Ash's Unova Team is that after the Absolute Mess that is Sinnoh the two of them decided to switch who does the gym challenge and who tags along and provides snarky commentary for the next region. Also just because he gets a lot of Pokemon in Unova) Then Ash gets his full teams in Kalos and Alola (since those teams were so small to begin with) and I haven't figured out anything for Journeys)
Technically she also gets a Pidove, but it's a different Pidove from Ash's and he still gets his Pidove. Her's is male, so they'll at least be visually distinct when they're fully evolved even if Ash and Maria revel a bit in the confusion that comes from both of them having the same Pokemon and refusing to use nicknames.
Also, Primeape ends up with Team Rocket because Maria got a Clefairy that loves martial arts as her first catch who handed Primeape his recently-nonexistent tail and he basically forced "The Angry Red Human" to catch him since he immediately clocked that Team Rocket does basically nothing but follow the main group around and were therefore his best shot at a rematch.
(might post a mostly full list of at least everyone's Kanto catches at some point. Seriously I've got teams fully planned out through Unova and partially-but-subject-to-change for Kalos and Alola (though for Movie Reasons Johto is when certain catches start being major spoilers. assuming I decide to start caring about spoilers))

For most Squirtle Line Pokemon in the Papa Meowth AU I'd just pick abilities at random, but I have actual Plans for the Squirtle Squad leader and May's Squirtle/Wartortle.
Squirtle Squad Squirtle has Speed Boost, Swift Swim and Motor Drive so his whole thing is Speed now. Also Maria catches him instead of Ash.
Meanwhile May's Wartortle has a new ability I came up with called "Liquify" which is a Water-Type version of Pixelate and Refrigerate. Because it just makes sense to me for there to be a version of those abilities for every Type.

Just had an idea for an alternate version of the Papa Meowth AU where instead of Meowth finding Maria as a baby Mew and never joining Team Rocket at all, he finds her as a baby Mewtwo during the brief period where he was in Giovani’s favor and breaks her out. Stakes are higher since they’re now actively hiding from Team Rocket, Giovanni is actively hunting them down, and Maria’s an entirely new species instead of just a really rare and reclusive one(and has *Trauma*), but it’s more or less the same since Delia’s Mystery Dungeon stuff hasn’t changed. They even end up teleporting to Pallet town and getting found by Ash on the same day and in the same condition they did in the original AU.

Time to finally show off the kid!
As you’d expect, she ended up with Meowth’s accent and a few of his mannerisms. She also wears an amulet coin she found because it makes her look like her pops.
She actually based her human form on Ash since her cover story is that she’s his sister. Her outfit is mostly just stuff she saw in a magazine and decided she liked, though the boots were specifically picked because they somewhat resembled Meowth’s fur markings. The only things that are actual physical objects instead of just part of the transformation are her amulet coin, backpack and pokeball belt. Also since it’s on the back of her head she doesn’t know she forgot to give her ponytail a hair tie.

Man, if I ever actually start writing for my Papa Meowth AU it’s going to be hilarious when I finally get to Journeys, because there’s a Mew right there but nobody’s allowed to catch her because she’s also a trainer and Ash’s surrogate sister, and Goh just has to live with that. Especially funny when they actually get to the Project Mew stuff and those guys also have to deal with the fact that she’s off-limits.

Not sure if it would be more interesting for Meowth to find Maria as a little baby Mewtwo or as a full-sized but child-minded Mewtwo in the alternate Papa Meowth AU. decisions decisions...

Funny Pokemon Anime idea: Paul ends up with an Eevee that’s just as emotionally constipated and obsessed with strength and optimization as he is. Eevee notices that Paul doesn’t have very many Fairy Types on his permanent roster and decides it wants to evolve into a Sylveon, especially since its current ability is Anticipation which would become the extremely useful Pixelate...and then they look up the evolution requirements.
Yeah, affection isn’t exactly either of their strong suits.

Papa Meowth AU: Humans With Pokemon Powers
So obviously we already know that in canon there are people who have the ability to use Pokemon moves-heck, Ash is one of them. Well in the Papa Meowth AU (as well as other Pokemon stories I come up with) I’m expanding it to include all the different types.
Fighting and Normal- Aura Manipulators, with the Aura Guardians as the most well known group associated with the ability. While it’s fallen into obscurity, almost everyone has the potential to use at least a little aura since it’s literally life force, which is why someone can get hit by a hyper beam and only get thrown back instead of vaporized. It’s also the most versatile of the bunch, since if you know what you’re doing you can modify the properties of the projected Aura and learn moves from other Types.
Psychic- Psychics, obviously. In modern day it’s the most widespread and well-known out of all of them.
Ghost- Witches. It’s more-or-less the only one that can’t be used directly by humans, since they’re still alive. Instead, they utilize potions and rituals that produce various effects. It’s mainly centered around the idea of sacrifice, namely the sacrifice of materials, time or effort in the case of the more ethically sound methods, though there are...other paths.
Dark and Poison- Ninja, though these days it’s extremely rare to encounter one that can pull off actual moves instead of just conventional Ninjutsu.
Dragon- Dragon Tamers/Riders. Like with Ninjas not many modern tamers or riders can pull off moves on their own, but there are quite a few who can understand Dragon Types, either Empathically or through straight-up translation.
Grass- Druids and Acolytes of Celibi. The latter are also able to learn time manipulation, though usually only clairvoyance and reading the past of an area or object.
Ground, Rock and Steel- Earthshapers, which were wiped out almost entirely by the King of Pokelantis during his attempts to control Ho-oh and take over the world. When they were still around the majority of them tended to specialize in one or two of the relevant types, but the most powerful could use all three.
Fire- If there was ever a specific group for it, it’s been lost to history. Currently anyone with an affinity for fire is either focused on a specific species (like Laramie Ranch and the Charific Valley) or absorbed into the Dragon clans.
Fairy- Mages. A bit like Witches, but since they’re not using magic based on death they can actually use it directly, which makes things get...Weird.
Water and Ice- There’s never been any specific group, mainly just sailors who have more sea in their blood than they think, hikers who can go higher and longer than normal, and Gym Leaders who are just a bit too in their element. It’s a very subtle sort of power.
Electric, Bug and Flying. The ones I’ve got nothing for. I would assume that there are people who can use these types of moves but I have no idea what kind of groups there’d be for them.
Shadow- Just like Pokemon, powered humans can have their energy corrupted by pain and brainwashing, and it ain’t pretty.
