hello! i’ve been doing a project recently where i’m creating a new writing script and i’m just getting to the designing stage (finally after a whole lot of research!).
i was wondering if you could tell me a little about how you designed the dai bendu writing system or any interesting things you decided to do with it?
Okay this is going to be much less impressive and helpful than you think it might be, my apologies xD
So, first of: we tried to create our conlang based on the scraps of Jedi language worldbuilding we were given. So when it came to script, we searched for whether there were any scraps. Lo and behold: the sequel trilogy is useful for once as it gave us the sacred Jedi texts and boom: we had a script.
Tumblr media
We copied pretty much ever “letter” of those pages and tried to see how many there were. We’d already decided that we were going for a phonological script, meaning that every letter would correspond to a singular specific sound. And then we looked at the letters we had and adapted them until we liked their look. After all, this is supposed to be a modernized script. And that is pretty much it.
Now, as an addendum: what we didn’t know when we did that is that the sacred jedi texts are even more lackluster in creative world building than we assumed. Here is a pretty good research article on what those pages might all be based on. So technically speaking the design of our script falls somewhere between Ge’ez and Coptic.
I’ll hand it to them, however. This is a step up for the absolute catastrophic fuck up that was using Hebrew for Sith originally. Shout out to Ben Grossblatt for fixing that, I’m sorry Disney never let you do more stuff for Sith.
I think the most interesting thing - and our one phonological exception - is the fact that we created a letter that means “Dai” aka “Force”.
Tumblr media
We went for three circles as circles keep showing up in Jedi art and we like the symbolism of a circle connecting all. This also enables some really neat calligraphy, which I think Jedi would enjoy practicing. Also fun fact: if you’re insane enough to for some reason sort how every single sith and Jedi temple we know looks like, you’ll discover that Jedi prefer domes in their building designs.
For you: I’d recommend looking into the environment of your culture. What did they first start writing on? What materials were used? How would that have changed? Did they have contact with other cultures that might have influenced the script? And also, is it writeable? Is this something you can do calligraphy with as easily as take some notes grocery shopping? If your script isn’t practical in every day life, you might wanna change it until it is. I’d recommend practicing writing it yourself.

songs that remind me of moral orel and why part 1
it is almost 6 am but im suffering from moral orel brainrot so i decided to explain my moral orel playlist. note that this includes my personal headcanons. also english isnt my first language so i apologize for the lack of grammar.
no children - the mountain goats  - for obvious reasons. im pretty sure you all know why + it’s in the show (added perfectly if i may add)  - it’s the perfect clay and bloberta song. clay hates himself as much as he hates his wife. - notable lyrics :-  “i hope i never get sober” - it’s clay’s way of coping. he’ll never let alcohol go because it’s the only thing that makes him feel sane. "and i'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out, you'd stay the hell out of my way” - i think that the only reason they are still together is because they care about their image. they want everyone to believe that they are the perfect family, and that fact alone is worth staying. but they obviously want out, they just don’t have the strength.
“i am drowning, there is no sign of land, you are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand, and I hope you die. I hope we both die” - both of them are victims of each other. they are aware that they are terrible for each other but it’s their comfort zone. they are hand in hand in this terrible relationship since its the only love they know.
special girl - dodie - while not all the lyrics are relevant, and i think the singer intended for the song to mean something completely different, i feel like this is bloberta’s song.  - bloberta likes to feel special. so she goes out her way to prove to others that she’s worth loving. because of how her family treated her, she feels like the black sheep of the family so she wants to be good. she wants to help. - being married to clay, she knows of her flaws, and she does not care what clay thinks about it. as long as she does her duties, and feels like she’s a part of something, that enough. - notable lyrics:- “it's not my fault, i was raised by open mouths and teary eyes, passive wistful lullabies. i found my worth in this world by proving I'm a special girl, time and time again.” - bloberta was raised by a critical mom and an emotionally unavailable dad. this causes her to feel as if she has to always be useful to gain attention. (i feel like this applies to clay and his father too except clay’s way of getting attention is to act out and get abused...)
“could not care less if you love me, but hate me first, yeah make me work, that’s perfect.” - i’m taking the “make me work” part literally because all she wants to do is work to feel like she is worth something. she cant care less if clay is unhappy with her, if they are in truly in love or not, she just wants to be a part of something. she’s grown up believing this as well, not just because of her parents but because of moralton’s values. you need to be with someone so u can fulfill god’s wishes.
guiltless - dodie (can u tell im obsessed with dodie) - this is in the pov of orel, after he realizes his dad isn’t a good dad. isn’t a dad worth honoring. - it could be about his mother too. they’re both just not good parents. they do their duties to provide, but there’s no emotional connection there. (there is a bit with clay, but you can tell it’s only when it’s about clay. its not that he doesnt care about orel.. he cares in his own sick, unhealthy way) - notable lyrics:-  “oh, but I'm not bitter, I'm just tired. no use getting angry at the way that you're wired. ignorant trauma in one afternoon” - I feel like orel has too much of a good heart to hate clay. he’s just tired, and he knows clay won’t change. the line ignorant trauma in one afternoon reminds me so much of when clay shot him. it’s nothing to clay, he even gaslit orel right after, saying he didn’t do it. to him it was just a small matter, not knowing or acknowledging the emotional and physical pain that will stick with orel for the rest of his life. “is it real? you believe you're guiltless. oh, I can tell you believe you're guiltless. but I don't think I’d feel better if I opened your eyes, i'll carry your burden 'til the day that you die“ - Clay hasn’t apologized. in fact, he tells him how happy he was that he shot him. I think even if he did, Orel wouldn’t feel content. he realizes after that just how much clay does not appreciate him, does not love him as much as he loves alcohol. so he’ll carry the burden of the trauma clay had caused him to the grave. he doesn’t despise clay, he’s just dissapointed.
“not one shred of hope, so I built up my own“ - Before the nature episode, Orel has always looked up to his dad because he always asked his dad for advice - terrible advice. even though clay clearly was horrible to him, he overlooked all of that. he had hope.
“and I could never let you know (oh, you'd never get it) and now I'm the one who can't let go (oh, don't say it's genetic)” I think that Orel will never let clay know the trauma he caused him, because I don’t think clay will think he’s wrong. when orel grows up it’ll just be a looming shadow that follows him. this doesn’t mean he won’t be happy when he grows up though, in the last ep he’s clearly happy with his own children, he broke the cycle of generational trauma, but it will stay as it does with anyone who has abusive parents who just won’t get it.
pls let me know if u guys have any songs that remind u of these 3 as well. i need something to fill the void.
here’s the full playlist, there’s not much songs but im still trying to find the perfect songs because this stupid puppet show is all i think about now - (x)

Hi, @passive-wistful-lullabies!
Thanks for the ask, it's much appreciated today! Five things that make me happy, you say?
1 rain, and a bit of fresh air in this hot hot summer
2 my cats, one of which is trying to chew my left foot for some reason
3 scrapbooking and art, even if it's hard to do in summer while my brain is actually melting
4 ASMR videos with natural sounds, I recently rediscovered them and now I can't live without them
5 Obi-Wan Kenobi in all the media and forms, but especially the tv series

Ooo! Thank you!! Let's see;
❓Write an alternate summary for a published fic without using names. (Points if your followers can guess the fic.)
Oh boy, okay but summaries are the hardest part *cries* okay;
A man on a quest to find his beloved discovers him in the most unlikely of places. He must find a way to overcome the barriers between them and conquer the evils that they face, both within and without, if he wants to win his heart and return home safely.
Not great but not terrible I think? :/
~
🙅‍♀️ What is one trope you refuse to ever write?
Hmmm this is a good one. Oh, probably non-canon setting AUs. I don't think I have ever written any between all my published and unpublished fics. I will canon divergence and universe tweak all day long, but I just don't really vibe with them. I'll read them, sometimes, but I have absolutely no desire to write them. I just love fucking about in whatever canon universe exists far too much.
Thank you for the ask! Meme over here for anyone else who wants to!

also, congrats on 100 followers!! 🎉🎉
Thank you!!!!! :D
I'm going through a weird William Blake phase right now (which is odd as I usually only get really into poets from 1900 on) and currently I am obsessed over "The Little Boy Lost" from The Songs of Innocence because it's so simple an so short but manages to pack so much emotion into that little space.
The Little Boy Lost Father, father, where are you going O do not walk so fast. Speak father, speak to your little boy Or else I shall be lost, The night was dark no father was there The child was wet with dew. The mire was deep, & the child did weep And away the vapour flew.

Yknow what tell me more about them
SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO GET TO THIS BUT HERE WE GO
If you wanna know cool facts about their friends, past, or just them in general JUST ASK I have a LOT more info
Name: Puyumi “Pieris” Celeste De la Cruz
Name meaning: “Divine Light of the Cross”
Ethnicity: Dominican-Japanese
Pronouns: They/them, She/they, He/they
Sexualities: Asexual, Agender, Queer
Hair: Black cut and layered curly hair
Eyes (Quirk not in use): Greenish brown
Inspirations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quirk: A Soldier's Goodbye (Anthem/Farewell)
Quirk Information
● Puyumi hums a Melody and it can either give someone minor injuries
1. Small to medium sized cuts all over the body
2. Bruises
3. Headaches
● Or they can make minor injuries slightly worse
1. Turn cuts into lashes
2. Bruise internally
3. Turn headaches into minor concussions.
● The melody is different for every person, but is absolutely wordless.
● The next part of the Quirk, from which the name came from, happens when words are added.
● The lyrics are different for every person, very intimate in ways the melody is not and very haunting.
● Puyumi can make existing injuries life threatening, but overall harmless in the way that they can be saved if they get immediate help, as long as Puyumi doesn't finish the song.
● If Puyumi finishes the song which can only be two verses max, then the person under the effect of the song, will die. Nothing can save them, their injuries can only get worse and will not heal.
● With the melody, the listener gets a feeling not unlike dissociation.
“It was like once I heard it, I was outside my body, watching it. But there were two of me, one was still going through the motions of fighting off the heroes and the other… the other was laying on the ground. It was… It was horrifying. It wasn’t moving, It wasn’t breathing, It- It was gone. I could feel It. I was pale and bleeding out and watching everything around me, looking from the fight, to my dead body and I couldn’t do anything. Then the fighting body passed out and the next thing I know I’m in the hospital and then cartered off the next day to Tartarus, where I am now.”
“Oh, so that’s what it’s like.”
“You- you brought her here?! SHE’S HERE?!”
“It’s they/them.”
“I don’t care you fucking sociopath! I told you what I know, just- just keep that monster away from me!
● The range of the melody changes depending on the age of the listener. For kids from birth to 12 their melodies are gentle and not unlike a lullaby, for teens ages 13 to 15 the melodies are high and airy, a bit curious and wistful. For adults ages 15 to 59 the melodies are mournful and deep and more than often cut abruptly. For the elderly, ages 69 and up, the melodies are soft and hard to hear, until they slowly fade out.
● Upon first activation, Puyumi needs to have looked into the listeners eyes once for a full 10 seconds. The reason being the saying that the eyes are the window to the soul, and if there is anything that can harm you beyond repair, it’s in your soul.
● The injuries seem to come out of the person themself, split open or blooming from underneath the skin. The quirks effects can not be stopped by any kind of shield quirks.
● The eye contact has to be mutual
● Like Shinsou’s quirk, Puyumi's quirk can only be enhanced acoustically.
● Puyumi has multiple vocal cords, their regular pair, the one used for the melody, and another for the song.
● Due to the three vocal cords, they are thinner to fit, giving Puyumi a higher pitched voice
● The third set of vocal cords can direct who the song is for
● When Puyumi’s quirk is activated, they unintentionally tend to stare at where It lies.
● Since eye contact is required, Puyumi’s eye’s change depending on their surroundings
● Puyumi tends to know, or have a good estimate of people's ages.
● Puyumi can hear notes echoing from people that follow along with their melody.
● Have really strong ears so they can hear the notes over the bustle of life/battle
● Humans – Best Mammal Vision.
● Owls – Best Night Vision.
● Sharks – Best Underwater Vision.
● Chameleons – Broadest Field of Vision.
● Eagles – Best Eyes in the Animal Kingdom.
Quirk Drawbacks
● Terrible sore throat
● Apathy
● Overuse cause user to strain vocal cords, sometimes to the point of ripping them
● Random chills
● Random inconvinouses
● Eye strain
● Migraines
Character Information
● Puyumi tends to where headphones and blast must in crowded areas, seeing as the notes emitting from everyone gets overwhelming.
● Before Puyumi got their Quirk, they had a good relationship with their parents. However, after the incident that caused their fathers death, her mother became resentful and passive agressive.
● Puyumi has ran away multiple times, beginning at six, each departure getting longer and longer, going from two days from her first time, having been escorted home by any underground hero, to three months, which was interrupted by the canon timeline
● Her mother had a simple Song Bird quirk where she could sing the song of countless birds as long as she heard it at least once.
● Her father's quirk was darker, he had death visions every night. It was mostly the deaths of his alternate reality self, but sometimes it leaked out to the alternate version of his close loved ones.
● His father was very loving and attentive towards them for their early childhood, though, the closer they got to four, the more absent minded he got, sometimes going days at a time before he became aware again.
● After they were caught, they bounced from hero to hero every month or so before the school year started.
● She hates it when people follow after her when she’s going to get something (for them)
● Their voice sounds really good with some songs, and low-key bad with others
● Huge AoT fan. It’s their comfort anime and she’s particularly fond of Eren and Levi
● Has 100% screamed Shinzou wo Sasageyo at people, one of the few times he will raise his voice.
Relations
● Mother: M/n De la Cruz F/L/N: Her mother was a popular therapist among children and soldiers with PTSD because her quirk could be very grounding. One of her child patients even went on to become an ornithologist, specializing in bird calls. F/n wasn’t her patient, but she was called in a few times to calm him.
● Father: F/n De la Cruz
● Cousin: Drew De la Cruz

YOUNHA - PARADE [6.33] No, we don't have an algorithm yet for Most Adjective Consensus...
Austin Brown: A pleasant slice of bouncy R&B, aided by funk licks and Timbaland-lite polyrhythms, and pushed ever so slightly over the edge from passive pleasure to active enjoyment by Younha's feather-light lullaby voice. [6]
Leah Isobel: "Parade" is so light and soft it feels like it might evaporate if I think about it too hard. Younha's voice is warm and sweet, twirling around the high notes; the bouncy bassline keeps her within the pull of gravity, but only just. "It's okay to think that you're the star," she sings, "sometimes." The feeling that the world revolves around her is fleeting, but to that feeling she attributes a gentleness and a relief that linger. [7]
Alfred Soto: A lovely chorus melody -- plaintive, wistful -- anchors this hologram of a performance. [7]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: The GroovyRoom tag tips us off that Younha is trying to stay up to date with current musical trends in Korea, but the result is something as forgettable as her past singles. Younha's vocals are as ineffectual as vapor, and the cute synth melody overshadows it completely. It doesn't help that another veteran K-pop star joined forces with contemporary songwriters/producers last month and made something far more successful. [2]
Michelle Myers: This cheerful pop tune might be utterly forgettable were it not for Younha's strong yet delicate soprano soaring across the pre-chorus. [7]
Ryo Miyauchi: The fireworks pop rather quietly in Younha's "Parade," but she's singing about a more private magic. She admires a love that doesn't completely re-define her universe but simply adds to it more glow, rhythm and imagination. GroovyRoom's signature sound gives her modestly changed world a fitting base: down to earth in its ambition, yet still cosmic in its dreaminess. [7]
Alex Clifton: "Parade" feels like a moment out of time. It's not untethered--Younha's voice grounds the piece nicely and the backing track is busy but uncluttered--but somehow feels otherworldly. It's been a while since a song made me feel shot out to the stars. [8]
Iain Mew: A song that goes out of its way to be undemanding, it's sweet and soft and offers a constant stream of gentle pleasure. I think I would need to be in a fragile mood for that to seem worth taking over a lot of other choices, but it's something. [6]
Ramzi Awn: Unlikely synths are always a plus, and Younha's ethereal flow is refreshing. "Parade" boasts just the right balance of texture and melody, and the single's light touch is more than just a pretty facade--it's intuitive. I've been missing a good parade. [7]

❄ Down time with Senya
This one was interesting — thank you Nonny!  I haven’t had much chance yet to write with Senya! This one got a little long so I’m going to put it under a cut.
Days on Odessen were filled with the hard work and labor of starting something from scratch, the occasional cool mountain breeze bringing respite in between stretches of construction. The planet was wild, untouched and untamed, just waiting for someone to make their mark on it. Some construction continued after the sun set, for some of those who came preferred to work off their demons with the aid of lamps and torchlight. Camaraderie was a slow thing to establish, and while all came with the same purpose, their diverse backgrounds was proving to be a problem. On more than one occasion Senya had spied Lana, but more often than not, the Outlander who they had rescued step in to diffuse rising tempers.
The days may have been filled with work, noise, and conflict, but when dusk fell the burgeoning camp became another thing entirely. Guards wandered the edge of camp, always on alert for signs of encroaching wildlife — with everyone else keeping an eye on the sky for a far more dangerous predator. The long drone of arguments from long warring factions gave way to the buzz of insects, the crackle of campfire, and the distant cry of the pack of Shade Stalkers that had been stalking the edges of camp for the past week. The interior of the base would be shored up within another day or so, and they could start moving sleeping quarters there instead of inside the Gravestone and out under the stars.
Having a room, a place of her own, after being on the move for so long was going to be a change for Senya. She had a feeling she would not be the only one.
She moved into the light of the campfire seated near the edge of the cliff, footfalls softened out of habit. The younger woman on the edge of the fire’s light hadn’t seemed to notice her approach at first, fingers lightly tracing the screen of a datapad as if whatever was inscribed on there was of great importance. It possibly was, as tonight was not the only time she had spied the behavior — but Senya hadn’t asked. Something about the action seemed too private, and she was not one to pry. Instead she let her boot come down on a twig with a loud crunch to announce her presence.
“Senya,” came the greeting, “you’re up late.”
“I could say the same of you, Outlander.” She let her gaze wander up to the nebulae visible beyond the clouds streaking the sky. So much like home, but different as things were on every world she had been to. “It’s nice to get a break from everyone, don’t you agree?”
She looked like she wanted to say something to the contrary, gaze briefly flicking away from Senya to something unseen beyond the firelight. “It can get loud at times. The night is quiet — in its own way.”
Quiet of arguing voices and endless construction, yes, but sometimes silence could be the loudest thing of all. It left one too much time to dwell on what could have been, rather than on what was coming. It didn’t matter which direction Senya looked, she would see her children and the ways in which she had failed them — and the ways in which she would have to do so again if they were to ever be saved from themselves. The only moments she had free from that were the ones right now.
“Do you mind if I join you? If you would rather be alone…”
“No, of course not.” The datapad, seemingly forgotten, was slipped into an inner pocket of the cloak that had been donned to ward off the night’s chill. “I’m not really alone, am I?”
Senya pressed her lips together as she settled in next to the other woman, musing on those words. It could have been a dig, but she had gotten to know this Outlander well enough that she was not one for passive aggressive remarks. She instead spoke of the ghost that still lurked somewhere in the back of her mind. Senya could not deny her curiosity, her lingering feelings for the man who had fathered her children — but even those were overridden by the darker memories. Of her daughter’s drawn face, the cold stare of someone far older, far more angry and dangerous than the little girl she had left behind. Vaylin’s blue eyes forever darkened to an angry amber of someone gripped by an unbridled hatred for what had been done to her. What her mother had been unable to prevent.
She shook her head, trying to return herself to the here and now. Perhaps this was why she did not spend much time with this woman, the lingering presence of Valkorion erected an invisible wall, staining their interactions with the sins of both of their pasts. It wasn’t as strong as it was before the destruction of Asylum, like he was slumbering — waiting for something.
The others here looked to this woman for guidance, for hope. But when they looked away, Senya saw something else. Shoulders sagging under the weight of a tremendous burden, a smile that faded just as soon she thought no one could see. When Lana had spoken of the Outlander that could stop Arcann’s galactic conquest, she seemed to speak of some mythical person who could take on the galaxy. And she could do many of these great things — she had already inspired an entire movement behind her. But there was still a person behind all of that, one who it seemed had more burdens than just the ones imposed on her.
“There’s a very old song my mother used to sing to me,” Senya said quietly, watching as the flames of the campfire flickered into the evening air, “she said it was from the times when the Gods were young.”
“I don’t think you’ve sung that one before.”
“I like to share the happier ones usually. Bring a smile to others faces, rather than tears. We get enough of those just from day-to-day, don’t we?”
“Is it sad?”
“Happier than most from those days.” A strong breeze blew past, tossing the black loose hair that had escaped the tight bun up into the air. “The Gods were often cruel. It didn’t make for many happy stories. Most were about finding the strength to carry on from day to day. It wasn’t really a lullaby for children.”
“Then why did your mother sing it to you?”
“I was very headstrong when I was young, and I didn’t always make the best decisions. I think she might have been trying to help reign me in.”
“That is not an unfamiliar story. My mother was very much the same.”
Senya felt her brows raising quizzically. “I was under the impression that your kind did not have families.”
Most of her knowledge of the Jedi had come from those who had joined their camp and snatches she had heard over the years — one did not tend to learn much about the enemy on the battlefield outside of their ferocity.
“My Order has—had its own way of doing things. Not right or wrong, just… different.”
The correction to past tense didn’t escape Senya’s notice, and for a moment she considered saying something, but in the end she let it drop. As she usually did. She may have been a Knight from a different Order and believed in different things — but she understood the feeling of belonging, of purpose of serving. And whether their greater calling was a devotion to justice, or the preservation of peace — at the end of the day both of them were Knights that no longer belonged anywhere. Whether exiled or almost extinct, they were still alone on a wild world with only a fire to keep them warm.
“My mother used to sing to me too,” the quiet voice spoke after a very long pause, “although I can’t remember the words anymore. Or even the tune. But I still remember the warm feeling it gave me.”
Senya glanced down, and noticed that the datapad had made a reappearance in the Outlander’s lap, her fingers absently brushing across the screen even though it was powered down. She opened her mouth to say something, to broach that invisible wall — but instead of a prying question, what came out were the words of her mother’s old song, first just a whisper on the breeze. She had always meant to teach it to Vaylin, but she had never gotten a chance. It would have felt wrong to share it with a stranger, but this Outlander wasn’t exactly that either. Senya continued, as she remembered the old verses her voice rose from a whisper and became a soft tune. It was not her best performance, she was too rusty and unwilling to raise her voice enough for the rest of the camp to hear — but for a moment that invisible wall came down and she saw a wistful, grateful smile form on her companion’s face. Senya continued to croon quietly, letting the wind carry the words away into the night.

Note
for the fanfiction trope asks: modern au?
B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.
I’m more of a Canon Divergence kinda guy and like Canon AUs! And if modern, I tend to like college AUs the most

POST MALONE FT. TY DOLLA $IGN - PSYCHO
[4.71]
I guess we like psychos a little more than rockstars...
Ryo Miyauchi: After setting his eyes on Travis Scott's croons and 21 Savage's gloom, Post Malone now tries on the "aye" flow, which traces him back to his first reference point: Chief Keef, the model for "White Iverson." It's an adequate take on a party life that's trashy and more depressing than glamorous. In other words, it's yet another Post Malone single. [5]
Crystal Leww: Do you remember that meme video where all Nickelback songs are the same song? I feel that way about 2018 Post Malone. "Psycho" sounds the same as "rockstar," which was also a song that just sounded like an unending melody sung in a half-assed way. Who knows, maybe he will actually make a good song someday, too. [3]
Julian Axelrod: Post Malone presents a glassy-eyed lullaby that sounds like "Tha Crossroads" drained of all passion and pathos and converted into a Windows 95 desktop background. But the beat is an 8-bit beauty, and its hypnotizing shimmer matches the mind-numbing verses oddly well. Post and Ty are clearly on auto-pilot (or the Post Malone equivalent of auto-pilot) but they're emotive enough to make the dumbest possible lyrics blend into the backdrop, like Bob Ross fucking up a beautiful winter landscape. It's remarkably restrained for a guy who looks like a rabbi selling coke at a Kid Rock show. [6]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: The misleading "Official Audio" for "Rockstar" that Republic posted to YouTube was a three and a half minute loop of the chorus. It was eventually taken down, and YouTube declared that all similar videos would be removed. How apt that it's only now that Post Malone releases a song that needn't rely on such a gimmick to feel hypnotic. "Psycho" cleverly employs a beat that many will associate with wistful video game nostalgia. It's the chisel that rounds out the mood of a specific but ephemeral experience--one that's peppered with enough details to be vivid, but far too nebulous to dispel any of its magic. The words and phrases that catch one's ear ("Lil mama bad like Michael," "Diamonds by the boatload," Post Malone's "whoooaah") may be generic but they accomplish the task effectively. Best of all is how the chorus's lines are structured such that end words are accented, spoon-feeding listeners with rhymes that are agreeable enough to sustain passive interest. [7]
Katherine St Asaph: In a couple of days I'm going to talk about how much I love the new Ladytron single for its narcotic nihilism. (If you think that's a spoiler, you don't know me at all.) So why am I indifferent to Post Malone and imitators, despite their schtick being neatly, exactly summed up by "narcotic nihilism"? Maybe I lived through years of Kid Cudi already. Maybe I'm just old. [5]
Alfred Soto: The leads compete for Most Annoying Sing-Song About Tony Romo and Diamonds by the Boatload. [4]
Iain Mew: "Can't really trust nobody" as lullaby -- even before the feeble cruelty of the line about ugly girls it's a long way from working as a dream, but they don't have the imagination or conviction to actually go for the nightmare either. [3]
