Some notes on Jesus Christ Superstar (Swedish production 2022)
First I just wanna apologise for the extremely poor quality of the photos, hope you still find them interesting. My phone’s camera is no the best.
What I really enjoyed:
- First and foremost: Dilfssssss *cough couch* what I mean is... I love Peter Jöback and Ola Salo, they looked absolutely GORGEOUS. I only wished their hairs were long(er)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The High Priest’s and Pharisees’ makeup game was ON POINT
Look at those eyebrows! Magnificent! I also really liked their costumes. All the costumes of the show were a nice mix of modern and like “accurate” style. (I don’t know how to explain that, sorry)
Tumblr media
- Caiaphas’s voice was amazing (as usual). Maybe a bit higher than in some other productions but still super nice!
- ANNAS MY LOVE OMG!!! He was so smol and angy and bratty all the time!! XD And he walked like a lil gremlin all crouchy and stuff?! I love him, protect him at all costs
- Caiaphas was played by Kristoffer Hellström and Annas by David Lindström
Tumblr media
What are those faces, I can’t
Tumblr media
- SIMON THE ZEALOT WAS PLAYED BY A WOMAN
I repeat she was played by a woman!!!! (by Janna Yngwe I think?)
My gay heart almost exploded!! I wanna be her and I wanna be with her (sadly, I didn’t get any good photos of her, damn my camera)
Tumblr media
- Mary’s voice was phenomenal, 10/10. She was played by the singer Janice. She was so pretty!
- The outfits were a really nice mix between modern and the “og” 1973 movie outfits. Like you could very easily tell who was a priest and who was a king etc. But then the outfits had like a little modern twist to them, e.g. Simon’s leather body harness-thing.
I LOVED Judas’s final outfit. With all the fringes it felt like an homage to what Judas wears in the 1973 movie. Except now it was also sparkly golden.
Overall the “outfit gayness” was like around 6/10. Chest hairs visible? Yes. Shiny and sparkle? Yes. But it could’ve been more gay. (I’m looking at you 2014 Swedish production)
Tumblr media
Daddy... I mean *cough* Ola!<3
Tumblr media
- The set was interesting. At the start of the show all the support pillars(? idk what they are called) were lying on the ground and slowly one by one they were raised to the ceiling as part of the choreography. In fact (my queen) Simon the Zealot climbed up one of them during “Simon the Zealot”.
Tumblr media
Look at her go!<3
Tumblr media
Also, at all times there were 1-3 wild ensemble cameramen running around and filming the main actors with their little cameras. Most of the time what they were filming was being showed on the big screens at the back of the stage. It was interesting to see the scenes play out from multiple directions and a bit more close up.
- The Temple song was ummmm quite something... omg. The ensemble was strip teasing, grinding and twerking in front of the aforementioned little cameras they had there and that was quite something to experience..
- King Herods omg, the outfit, the SLIPPERS, the pig!!
(that’s exactly what I had written in my notes and tbh it’s quite accurate)
I always love to see the different ways different productions do King Herod. The more erratic, the better, imho. And this one was no different. Anton Lundqvist did an amazing job!
First of all, he was only wearing a pair of swimming shorts? And on his feet he had SLIPPERS that looked like TIGERS?? He also had a sparkly blue cape with a sparkly golden H on the back. (that he at one point used as the swimming pool) Not only was it all very shiny and glorious, it also reminded me of the Swedish flag. I think he also had messy over-lined red lips?
And then there was the giant inflatable pig?? First King Herod just sat on it but at the end he threw a tantrum and threw the pig around...
Also, that blue little sled you can see in the second picture? That was part of the “change my water into wine”-thing but at the end King Herod sat in it and one from the ensamble dragged him off stage as if he was a kid refusing to walk. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Pilate did in fact spit everywhere during “Trial by Pilate”. That passionate monologue at the end would not be the same without all the spitting. (No papayas tho) XD His and the Roman soldiers’ costumes were also pretty interesting with all the cutouts. (Pilate was played by Patrik Martinsson)
Tumblr media
- Disco ball Jesus. Yes, you read that right. When Jesus was crucified, Mary pulled some rope that revealed a weird reflective thing on Jesus’s chest? And then some lights were shined to it and he looked like a disco ball. Amazing.
Tumblr media
What I wish was better:
- As I mentioned before, Jesus and Judas’s hairs should have been longer!
- Peter was wayyyy too chill about everything that’s happening around him. I wished he’d shown more emotion, especially during “Could we start again please?”. (As with everything) I once again like to compare everything to the 2012 UK Arena Tour production, but just because I think that version of Peter showed soooo much more emotion and actually seemed distressed about denying Jesus etc.
- The betrayal kiss was PATHETIC!! Pathetic, I tell ya!!
Dear Swedish productions of JCS, in 2014 you gave us (one) of the best betrayal kisses known to mankind and now what?? Just a little peck on the cheek??? Like c’mon!! And It was Ola Salo himself as Judas! I was very disappointed to say the least.
I think that concludes my little review of the 2022 Swedish Production of Jesus Christ Superstar. If you read the whole thing, awesome and thank you! I hope there aren’t many spelling mistakes. I have some extra photos I took, so I might share them here later.

Judas Iscariot, “Heaven On Their Minds”-”Judas’ Death” Costume (Patrik Martinsson) Göta Lejon Jesus Christ Superstar Production 2012-13 (1/2)
Costume design: Camilla Thulin
Jesus: Ola Salo
Mary Magdalene: Anna Maria Hallgarn
Costume Notes: For fans of Peter Johansson’s version (2014 tour) you may find that this is practically identical to Johansson’s costume; however there are some minor differences. Martinsson, unlike Johansson who succeeded him, wears his netted shirt sleeves all the way down to his wrists rather than rolling them up. This is most likely due to preference, one, but also due to Martinsson’s costume’s lack of bracelet/cuffs. Instead of wrist décor Martinsson has simple leather-like chord necklace reminiscent of Carl Anderson’s movie costume’s necklace (minus the beads). From what I can tell Martinsson switches between tucking his pants into his boot or having the pants go over the tops of the boots. He also leaves his netted shirt mainly untucked, so it covers his belt (which appears to be plain black, different from Johansson’s). It also appears early on Martinsson had a more brown straight wig (top center and right pic) which was later switched to the more grey wavy wig, which is kept for the 2014 tour as well. Martinsson also has little eye makeup, especially lacking in eyeshadow which will change for the 2014 tour. One final thing about the costume, he only wears the black velvet jacket for “Heaven on Their Minds“ and perhaps the betrayal based on the second row left picture though I believe that is merely a promo shot and not what he actually look like in that scene (assumption based on Johansson’s performance).
Production Notes: This version later went on tour which was the 2014 Arena Tour with Peter Johansson as Judas. From this version in Stockholm to the tour there is very little change. The only change aside from costume is Jesus’s face. As you may have noticed in one of the photos Jesus has red stars on his face, while they do not stay the whole show they stay for a bit of the first act. This was removed later on in the run and for the tour, but was probably a continuation from the 2008 Malmö Opera version where Jesus had a single red circle painted on his forehead.
The 2014 arena tour of this version is available on Peter Johansson’s YouTube channel (act 1, 2). For Martinsson as Judas, his “Heaven on Their Minds” is available in full on YouTube and parts of his “Superstar” is available in the trailer for this production (bts video available as well).

well this is a stupid thing i made a few weeks ago and forgot about, my brother had been showing me too many tiermaker images and i never thought i’d do one but then realised there are many deaths and i have opinions so...
i tried to include as many different deaths that i know about and could find images of (yes i included ivan ozhogin and kirill gordeev even though they were just concert performances but look i just really like them)
if you want to do it yourself, the link is in the replies to this post (can’t put it here otherwise once again tumblr blocks the post from showing up in tags) and don’t think you have to use all of them, i just included them all more for the example than anything, but if you only know a few then don’t feel like you have to rank them all.
obviously this is just my personal opinion, for sure i’m up for talking with people about their favourites, but not for arguing. everyone’s got different tastes, doesn’t make any of us wrong
i couldn’t find a way to show the names of the images so if want to know who everyone is then i’ll put it below here

Some Peter Jöback & Ola Salo Jesus Christ Superstar thoughts!
Negatives first: beforehand, I couldn’t really imagine Peter Jöback as Jesus – and, having seen the show, I’m afraid I still think the role doesn’t really suit him. Vocally, it seemed like he doesn’t quite have the range: he clearly gave it his everything, but it sounded like he was struggling with some of the high parts throughout the show, and near the end, he was having some trouble with the score in general. I’m not saying he was bad, I’m just saying I’ve heard others sing the role a way that sounds way, way more effortless. (A bit of that also goes for both Ola Salo and Janice, I got a vibe they weren’t at their absolute top vocal shape last night either, but unfortunately, Jöback was having the hardest time.)
What’s more, to me, Jöback didn’t really emanate that kind of magnetic charisma/energy that you’d expect from a character that’s repeatedly called a superstar. But I guess that’s a matter of personal taste! He’s of course a star in his own right in real life, so even if I wasn’t really feeling it here, clearly, some people are. Also, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone getting the superstar vibe part of the role across 100% – but the other performers I’ve seen in the role have had these, for a lack of a better term, more stereotypical Jesus vibes going on, with the beard and the generally kind countenance and that sorta stuff. Didn’t really get a lot of that from Jöback, either.
Also, Anton Lundqvist as Herod. He was cringey and annoying and really made me wish the song would be over already, even more so than usually. Ugh. Next time, I wish to see some Alice Cooper level nonsense when it comes to that character, instead of just garden variety annoying! [Edited to add: I suppose the over-the-top “we’re making fun of the king” vibe of Herod’s Song must’ve had a different effect on Swedish audiences, likely somewhat redeeming the annoyance (in case you’re not a fan of the monarchy, at least)? It’s just that for me, as a citizen of the republic of Finland, it didn’t really hit anywhere close to home.]
Other than that, though, I liked everybody!
Ola Salo was a good Judas (and gave me the feeling that, had I seen him as Jesus back when he used to play that part, I would’ve felt those superstar vibes) – he was absolutely overacting, but in a big arena setting, I don’t think that’s necessarily a problem. His Superstar was simply delicious. They went all out with it, with the super campy golden jumpsuit and body paint, I was kinda giggling under my breath all the way through. Loved it.
I liked how Janice gave Mary Magdalene this very frustrated edge – acting-wise, she did what she could to give the poorly written part some depth. It was cool to see Simon Zealotes played by Linda Pritchard (all-female touring version of JCS when??) And I was of course all heart eyes for Patrik Martinsson as Pilate! I’ve been a big fan of his Judas since forever, so I’m super glad I finally got the chance to see him live, even if it’s a different role this time. His Pilate had a good mix of authority and inner turmoil.
I’m unsure what to think about the 1973 movie style framing, with the theatre kids arriving in their everyday clothes and picking their roles/costumes. I don’t really know what they wanted to get across with that, it felt more unnecessary than anything to me? But other than that, I think the direction (by Fredrik “Benke” Rydman) was pretty solid. Nothing especially unique or innovative, but nothing too silly or weird either. In short, it was a well-made production that’s a good fit for a big arena (especially when compared to my recent Så som i himmelen experience). Extra credit for Robert Hvenström’s light design, there were some really cool lighting moments!
Too bad that I didn’t really click with Jöback!Jesus, but I’m glad I went nevertheless. I got to meet some friends, and a bunch more people saw the show tonight, so Finnish musical Twitter is having a good time discussing the show right now. It feels so delightfully normal after the all the nonsense of the past two years. I’m thriving.

I was really, really bored, so I made this personal ranking of my favourite to least favourite Der Tods. I tried to include as many as I could, but excluded some because I wasn’t that familiar with them. Was inspired by @emptymasks‘ tier, but I made my own template.
I ranked them based overall on both vocals and acting interpretation of the character. For Uwe and Máté specifically, I divided their versions of the character based on the different production they were in (For Uwe, it’s Vienna and Essen and for Máté, it’s Hungary, Vienna and Japan).  It’s all my own personal opinion but I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts!
Below are the list of everyone on my ranking:
S: Stanley Burleson (Netherlands 1999 2017 2018), Uwe Kröger (Vienna 1992-1994)

B: Uchino Masaaki (Japan Toho 2000-2001 2004), Asaka Manato (Japan Takarazuka 2016), Uwe Kröger (Essen 2001-03), Kamarás Máté (Vienna 2003-2006), Mester Tamás (Szeged 1996), Kamarás Máté (Miskloc 1999-2001, Budapest 2007-2010)

Judas Iscariot, “Superstar” Costume (Patrik Martinsson) Göta Lejon Jesus Christ Superstar Production 2012-13 (2/2)
Costume design: Camilla Thulin
Jesus: Ola Salo
Costume Notes: He is barefoot for “Superstar.” His costume is completely new aside from him keeping his necklace on. He even has his hair completely down, no longer in a half bun. His descent seems to be done with less visible rigging than the 2008 version which makes me think he has some sort of harness that is part of the robe he is wearing. I think the beige straps around his upper arm/shoulders visible once he removes the robe is part of the harness to allow him to be lowered, but again I am not really knowledgeable on this so I may be wrong. During the interlude between the first verse to the second verse of “Superstar” Judas will remove his robe to reveal he’s shirtless with red pants with a gold sparkly belt. From what I can tell the belt has a sparkly yellow gold base with sequin trim on the top and bottom edge, with the same trim going through the middle of the belt, (so three horizontal lines of sequin “trim” on the belt).

Elisabeth @ Karlstads musikteater, premiered 1999
These photos are from, as far as I am aware, the only Swedish production of Elisabeth made to date. It’s certainly where the songs on Youtube come from, since that’s how I learned about this theater.
The playbill and review cuttings were photographed by me at The Music and Theatre Library of Sweden, located in Stockholm. They had no video or sound records on hand, unfortunately, and I don’t think there was ever an official cast recording released.
Elisabeth - Cecilie Nerfont Thorgersen Lucheni - Christer Nerfont Döden - Patrik Martinsson Franz Joseph - Björn Eduard Sophie - Sylvia Härwell Rudolf - Martin Kagemark full cast list on the theater website
(Karlstads musikteater has since then changed its name to Wermland Opera)
Here are the songs, according to the playbill. If it is correct, there is no version of neither Schwarzer Prinz nor Ai to shi no Rondo.
