damn. what really gets me about the witcher s1e4 is, after everything's said and done and pavetta & duny are to marry, no matter how 'romantic' their joining appears, pavetta is being used just as yennefer explains in her timeline, as a vessel. 🥲 duny doesn't love her.

to him, she's a step in a ladder, a tool. i never got this far in the books so i didn't realize who he really was but i was truly convinced by duny's acting here that he cared for her. he's so convincing!!! it's not destiny. poor calanthe.

i guess maybe the difference between books + show is, maybe duny DOES love her in this version of the story? but from later episodes it does not appear so. i mean he carelessly throws her/their portraits into a fire. so i think this still stands.

Modern AU and Geralt's accidental acquisition of Ciri

Geralt's walking through the woods when he hears the screams. He has no phone, he's pretty deep in the forest, and he's reasonably sure he's big enough to not get murdered so he runs. He finds a woman in labour, all alone. After a brief conversation he finds out that she has no phone, no family, and no one she would call even if she could.

She doesn't want to move until she's had her baby and Geralt is quietly freaking out and just doing his best to comfort her until he can finally pick her and her baby up and get them to the hospital. It takes an hour for Cirilla to be born, another 40 minutes for him to barge into a convenience store at 3am, and another 15 before the ambulance gets them to the hospital. Etta won't let go of him and the paramedics just assume he's the father and neither Etta or Geralt have time to deny it before something goes wrong. Etta gets rushed in and by the morning Geralt's name is on the birth certificate with Etta's signature beneath it. She never gave her full name and had no ID, and Geralt stumbles out of the hospital with baby Cirilla Morhen and the blood of her recently deceased mother still on his shoes.

Duny/Pavetta and Crach&Duny

Ohhh a canon pair and a rarepair!

Let's start with Duny/Pavetta (photo by @marinamk29 because I don't have one myself. Thanks Mk29!)

This ship sailed... and tragically sunk in canon, but vibrantly alive in fanfiction.

Before we learned of the plot twist, it was a beautiful story of a woman who loved a man despite his cursed appearance. Age difference aside - and I mentioned before I had to suspend my modern sensibilities of the practice of marrying girls barely out of their teen age to much older guys, I truly believe that Duny - despite his thirst for vengeance, wanting to reclaim his stolen inheritance, saying he did not love Pavetta - loved Pavetta during the course of his stay in Cintra. Yeah, it wasn't true love that cured him of his quills, but it doesn't mean he felt not a shred of affection.

And my god, the stories you (@traumschwinge and others) made, make this pair all the more endearing. Heck even the threesome of Duny(Emhyr)/Pavetta and Geralt felt so natural, it was such a joy to read!

Unfortunately some people find this canon ship unpopular. It is in the pages of the books. And also the aforementioned age difference.

Now for the rarepair: Duny/Crach. Crach photo from @witcheringways and Duny pic is mine.

I don't ship them, but if I do, it's not a romantic one. More like the typical relationship between brothers in- law: sharing stories of their past encounters over tankards of beer, mother in- law issues ( I bet they have plenty of grievances to share beyond Calanthe's hearing and spies), talking about fatherhood and their kids. Crach showing Duny the isles and their way of life, Duny picking up some Skelliger habits- and since he can't reveal his true nationality, would be discussing battle tactics, maybe even teach him chess or moving chess pieces on a map.

Lots of laughter, beer, maybe some fisticuffs for fun, jawing and backslapping.

I leave the romance stories between the two to other writers.

What would happen if Geralt accepted his Child Surprise in the most tangible sense from the beginning? How could the story of Ciri's parents unfold when critical pieces are put into place before her arrival? An interesting story of Destiny rewritten, addressing topics such as; poor sex education, timely expressed truths, and gender feelings.

Author Highlight: Hobbitdragon is a creative author unafraid to tackle big concepts and feelings. While mpreg is not typically featured in their fics, there's no fumbling in skill with this fic! If you have not previously read his works and this story seems too challenging as an introduction, I highly recommend checking out his collection of other fics within the Witcher-verse instead!
