Schlissel challah 🗝
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baking challah in the shape of a key (schlissel meaning key in Yiddish) is an Ashkenazi tradition the Shabbat after Pesach, and is said to represent the key to the promised land. I’m usually team poppyseed but sesame seeds are traditional for schlissel challah, because they are supposed to resemble the manna we ate in the desert.
I couldn’t find a technique I liked so I just made one up- I did a 5-strand braid for the stem, and a standard 3-strand for the teeth and the head.
Hope everybody had a wonderful chag!

A large parcel-gilt silver Torah crown, probably Polish, late 18th - early 19th century
Engraved in Hebrew on the heart-shaped medallions (each says the same thing): “Blessed is our God Who created us for His own glory and gave us a true Torah.”
Engraved in Hebrew around the ball finial: “Donated by Pesah Tsevi ben Dov and his wife Yuta bat Eliezer, from the holy community of Kamenets.”
The scale and sophistication of this piece indicate that it was made in a major artistic centre, and the colored "gems" are typical of Polish pieces of the late 18th century.

Dinim Sevgi ırk'ım insan doğum yerim dünya...
Tumblr media
İnsanları sadece ikiye ayiriyor'um artik iyiler ve kötüler....
Ve bu konuda aşırı ırkcı'yım itiraf ediyorum...
youtube
Hala dini, dili, ırkı ayrıştırıcı farklılık sanan sığbeyinler... İnsanı insan yapan, bizleri buluşturan, yüreklerimizi titreten tek şey sevgi. Bazen bir şarkıda, bazen bir şiirde hepimizi birleştiren, ağlatan, saran, yaşadığımızı hatırlatan tek şey bakışlarımızdaki, sarılmamızdaki, birlikte ağlamamızdaki mucize 'sevgi'. Parayı, suni olan her şeyi yüceleştiren, çocukları ağlatan, bizi yalnızlığa mahkum eden, umutlarımızı hayallerimizi çalan tek şey sevgisizlik. Bazen bir şarkıda, bazen bir şiirde, bazen bir acıda tüm renkler birleştiğinde yaşıyorum. Birkaç şarkı paylaşıyorum seninle, notalarında buluşup sarılabileceğimiz. Bu şarkıları dinlerken sevgiyi hissedemiyorsan, yanındakine sarılamıyorsan sen yaşamıyorsun. Bu vesileyle, Hristiyan dostlarımın Paskalya, Musevi dostlarımın Pesah heyecanını paylaşıyorum. Kadir gecesinde 7 camiyi, Paskalyada kiliseyi,
Pesah'ta sinagogu paylaşır, alevisi, budisti, ateisti ve dahasında sevgiyi paylaşırız. Eğer yaradana sevgin varsa, yarattığına sevgin hayli hayli var. Yoksa sahtesin, yoksa yalansın. Bu satırları okuyan her kimsen, bu şarkılarda gözlerimi kapatıp sana sarılıyorum.
Gördüm beğendim ve aldım...

"When a white dove alighted on the roof of the synagogue, it was a sign that an angel bearing good tidings had appeared. If a star twinkled far off in the dark skies, that was a pure soul meant to join us or leaving us now. The stars are the souls of small brothers and sisters who left us when still young. In those days many innocent little sisters and young brothers departed from each family and ascended to Heaven. One began to have fears and to search the synagogue for demons. Boys in Pesah's heder already knew that every night the dead came to pray in the synagogue. There were children who had seen this with their very own eyes."

We’re on a middle grade kick lately! Katherine just finished rereading Howl’s Moving Castle for the bazillionth time, and is now reading Black Bird, Blue Road by Sofiya Pasternack on Piera’s recommendation.
Katherine isn’t physically here to blurb Black Bird, Blue Road, but I’M PIERA and I’ve read it too, so I’ll blurb it for her. BBBR is a really interesting, beautiful book set in the possibly-apocryphal Jewish empire of the circa-year-1000 Black Sea. The story follows Ziva as she tries to save her twin brother Pesah, who has leprosy, from alienation and death. At first she plans to bring him to Byzantium, where the best doctors in the world live, but then they meet and rescue a half-sheyd boy, who offers to bring them to the city of Luz, where the Angel of Death is forbidden to tread.
SUPER interesting stuff going on here with Western Asian Jewish ethnicity, the differing ways siblings view their own childhood, the difference between saving someone out of love versus saving them out of fear for yourself should they leave... nothing but bangers! Still thinkin’ about it!!

speculative fiction (fantasy mostly) books on my radar
T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead  a gripping and atmospheric retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Excerpt: www.tor.com/2022/06/01/excerpts-what-moves-the-dead-by-t-kingfisher/
Nick McDonell’s The Council of Animals, featuring illustrations by Steven Tabbutt. Excerpt: www.tor.com/2021/07/19/excerpts-nick-mcdonell-the-council-of-animals/
“‘Now,’ continued the cat, ‘there is nothing more difficult than changing an animal’s mind. But I will say, in case I can change yours: humans are more useful to us outside our bellies than in.’”
...
After The Calamity, the animals thought the humans had managed to do themselves in. But, it turns out, a few are cowering in makeshift villages. So the animals—among them a cat, a dog, a crow, a baboon, a horse, and a bear—have convened to debate whether to help the last human stragglers… or to eat them.
Sofiya Pasternack’s Black Bird, Blue Road : Pesah has lived with leprosy for years, and the twins have spent most of that time working on a cure. Then Pesah has a vision: The Angel of Death will come for him on Rosh Hashanah, just one month away.So Ziva takes her brother and runs away to find doctors who can cure him. But when they meet and accidentally free a half-demon boy, he suggests paying his debt by leading them to the fabled city of Luz, where no one ever dies—the one place Pesah will be safe.
Simon Jimenez’s The Spear Cuts Through Water
Writing in first, second, and third person, Jimenez makes sure “you” are part of this story, too, casting you as Araya’s descendent and current keeper of the spear. You’ve been called to the Inverted Theater—built by the Moon and Water for liaisons long before the Terrors were born. Now the theater calls dreamers together to experience their shared history. You’re both Jimenez’s reader and “you,” who’s listening to and remembering your lola (grandmother in Tagalog) tell tales of the Old Country when you are/were a child. In your lonely, adult present, your dreaming spirit watches those tales reenacted by dancers in the Inverted Theater. Yet you’re also living the stories as each character—from bit-player peasant to powerful goddess. You experience Jun’s PTSD, Keema’s disability—never explained, simply a part of him—and all the guilt, anger, pain, fear, joy, desire, and love that make Jimenez’s tapestry so beautiful.

I have six legs of lamb in my freezer (that's legs off of three lambs, minimum), so I should obviously cook one for Pesah, but HOW shall I cook it??? Hag sameah alsooooo
Hag sameah!!! I may vote for the method which made my great aunt the happiest, which was wrapping it in tinfoil, covering it in garlic and herbs and olive oil, and cooking it low and slow in the oven in its own juices until it was falling apart and shreddable.

this lovely piece is a compliment to the birkat hamazon. it originated among spanish and portuguese jews, with the lore being that they sang it instead of the birkat hamazon during the inquisition to avoid being outed as still practicing judaism but wanting to still hold onto their customs, but it is popular among many different sephardi communities today. it is sung in modern spanish but i’m sure there is a ladino version out there somewhere. i love this performance, i just think the vibe is fantastic. so if you are looking for an addition to your birkat hamazon or want something to use in place of it, consider this song!
