The sound of something heavy hitting the ground does not phase the person sitting at the table near the corner, nor does it stop her from drinking her tea. The skies outside are bright. For once, it does not feel artificial. 

Another crash. This time, it seems to be bottles. Whether full or empty, the Darkness does not know, nor care. Maybe she should. But she won’t. Instead, she crosses her legs one over the other in her chair, leaning back as her dark armor glitters in the unending brightness streaming through the window.

“How well do you know your friend the Exarch? Have you even seen what he hides beneath his cowl?”

A glass shatters.

“Really? Not even to you?” 

The sound of breathing. After a beat or so, there is one more crash, and then a thump, like a body hitting the ground, before the woman holding her teacup pauses with it just near her mouth. Pauses. Then takes another sip.

“I could kill him, you know,” was all she said. It was the first time she’d spoken in a long while, without her helmet. “But that would not make you happy, I’m sure.”

Aran’s back was turned to her. Even from where she sat, her shoulders heaved up and down, as though some grief had come bearing down on her as an enemy and she was winded from the battle. Ironically, the dresser on the ground was also winded, as it was more than turned over on its front side but not quite broken. 

The teacup clacked onto its plate. Arms drape around the Warrior of Light, from her neck, her shaking shoulders subdued only by the warmth- and cold- of another. “Decide.” 

Aloud, she replies, “To die?”

The darkness bristles around her. “To what end?”

Silence. She does not want to die. She knows she will, someday, sooner or later, and has made peace with it but… 

“There is so much left to do,” says the Darkness, its voice mournful. “I will not let them have you. Not yet.”

(“I will not let your tale end here!”)

It is strange to hear him say that. To hear what was heard before, from the mouth of another. So strange, in fact, that she pauses, mid-swing- something that is very much a mistake. The Sin Eater clipped her in the face, a blow hard enough to push her to one side, leaving the Exarch and their dwarven charge open to attack. 

He was strong, yes. She thought it often; though he stated over and over that he was old and frail, she had never had a more comparable- nay, capable- partner in battle. Losing him-

A quick and steady cut, right across the neck. Through flesh and pseudo-bone it cleaved. Had she swung down, it may have cleaved it in half. Still, she did not know it was done until it fell apart, dissolving into nothing but light before them both, her bloodied knuckles clasped around the hilt of her gunblade as it rested on her shoulder. Of course, when the weakness settled in, she let out a long, exhaling laugh. “PHEWWWW!” Her partner, in turn, mirrored it- though he put on a good show to conceal how much it had winded him.

“Though that was a near thing,” he said, a strange laugh at the back of his throat, “that was well fought, my friend.” Without being bid to, he started healing her, his hands just close enough to touch- but not touching. 

Again. 

It should have soured the moment, but she found it could not. For since the Rak’tika forest, she had not felt such hope. Such…fun. 

Such fun!

She laughed. It was a startled kind of laugh that she didn’t know she’d make, but found it bubbling past her lips anyway. When she looked over to him he seemed mystified by it, whether the sound or the action, as his lips parted a bit in response ... before he smiled and lowered his head a bit more, though the cowl already concealed his eyes. When he finished, she pulled out her Astrolabe- again, to his surprise- and started healing him in turn.

“Oh. That is kind of you, but-”

“Let me,” she said, focusing on the bruises up his left arm. Though her voice still cracked a bit when she used it, she continued, “First aid.”

I know you. 

She did not touch him. It would be bad, she realized, if she did, as she got the sense that it wasn’t something he wanted, but she was able to do the rest from where she was, fingers not quite touching, hands not quite mending, as her own grasp of healing magic was mediocre compared to his, at best. It did do the job though, which pleased her as she drew back and dusted herself off. Instinctively- and she was all instinct- she held out her hand to help him up as well, though she realized, after doing it, that it was the opposite of what should be done. Despite this, he took it- whether by instinct or his own folly- and did not bother putting distance between them for the rest of the trip. In fact, she thought he seemed rather…

Close.

“I think instead of killing him,” said the darkness, “I should tear off that abominable cowl.”

Aran shook her head. He clearly wanted to conceal his eyes for the time being, and she found that it was fine with her. It did not change her feelings as she expected they would have; instead, she considered the situation rather simple.

"I can wait.” She whispered, knowing her own clock was ticking, the sand in her hourglass slowly being consumed by Light. It was unlike her, but her instincts were always right. For once, she would not run about blindly, attacking what was in front of her. For once, she would be patient. “Just a little longer.”

Yes, Tomasz Mojsik wrote a book? study? on it, The “Double Orpheus”: between Myth and Cult”, it's available online. He draws interesting conclusions and seems to be quoting original sources a lot, though I'm curious what you think on the whole logic behind myth-making as a political move in 5th c. Athens after getting familiar with it.

At first I thought it was a book and I was scared but okay it’s just a scientific article phewwww 😂

To summarise, Tomasz Mojsik discusses that there was a duality in Orpheus’ ethnical identity. He was perceived as Thracian in general, but also mostly by the Athenians at a time during which they had created a powerful colony in Thrace and were interested in peace and alliance with the then Thracian King. On the other hand, many records regard Orpheus as Pierian Macedonian and this version probably rose at a time when King Archelaus of Macedon was trying to reinforce or persuade of the Hellenism of Macedonia and used this retelling of the Greek mythological figure being Macedonian as evidence of Macedonians being essentially Greeks.

My thoughts now… My impression is that there is a lot of assumption to be found in this research, which is to be expected in a way, since the author’s effort bears little promise from the beginning. We are talking about mythological retellings, which might as well have totally random explanations. I mean, it is a very risky area to draw safe scientific conclusions from.

Technically, it could make sense.

However while Mojsik notes this, he also then sort of ignores it in his reasoning; Greek Mythology sort of hellenizes all the known to the Greeks world. Progenitors and other notable mythological figures all have Greek names, speak fluently Greek, believe in the Greek gods, even when they come from different lands with different cultures. In this sense, Orpheus’ duality isn’t any different from all other supposedly non-Greek figures. They all have certain connections or distant origins from major or lesser deities of the Greek pantheon. As a result they do have a vague Greek origin or even not so vague, even though realistically they should have been total foreigners. If we had to explain everything in a similar way then a whole lot of mythological figures would just exist because Greeks were trying to form alliances with everyone. That’s unlikely IMO because we are just talking about an ancient people creating a lore for themselves. There was no need for accuracy or realism. It is a mystical lore putting gods living a few miles north, so essentially themselves, to the centre of all existence.

Therefore Orpheus being Thracian doesn’t stop him from technically being indistinguishable from all Greeks in all the myths associated with him. He doesn’t speak a different language, Chiron and Jason accept him, his mother is one of the freaking muses, some versions even have him to be the son of Apollo right away.

The actual Thracian equivalent of Orpheus was associated with some cult antagonism between solar and chthonic worshippers. This could have been transferred into Greek mythology via Orpheus being a son of Apollo and then entering Hades to bring back Eurydice. I believe all these might precede the 5th-4th centuries BC. So just because Athens then had these alliances with the Thracians it does not mean it called Orpheus a Thracian to cater to…whom, exactly? A Thracian king? All the Thracians? Please, let’s not forget we are talking about more than two millennias ago. Even if Athenian historians and poets chose to do that, it is certain that very very very very few Thracians would ever found out about it. And even if they sent messengers to the king, they would be like “Just so you know, King, we Athenians think a random mythological figure of ours was Thracian” and then surely the Thracian king would be like “Great! For this alone I am gonna be your ally in peace and war for all time!”.

I know I seem like I am making light of the article. I don’t deny that there might be a truth in Mojsik’s reasoning, but my point is that typically things don’t work this way. Whether propaganda or accurate information, it could not spread and be effective in ancient times as it is now through all the media. Even if the supposed propaganda targeted Athenians themselves, so that Athenians would want tighter bonds with Thracians, I still don’t see how this would guarantee success as in the same sense Athenians would have to want tight bonds with all nations with some associated mythological figure… Let alone that again, many Athenians wouldn’t find out and and even more wouldn’t care.

Besides, we need to stress again that the Thracian in the way he was presented in Greek mythology was very different from the actual living Thracian born in a Thracian family. The mythological one was just a Greek born in Thrace or having some obscure genealogical connection to a Thracian (who was also Greek-passing).

Now, as for the Macedonian version. Technically, in a version where Orpheus was the child of Calliope and Apollo, you can say that in fact Orpheus was an Olympian, and therefore a Pierian Macedonian! This completely eradicates his Thracian identity. Or, even if his father was the Thracian Oeagrus, that still makes him half-Macedonian Greek, half-Thracian, provided that you can call gods an ethnicity.

There is also this question: why was Orpheus’ ethnicity so important to Archelaus? If you already live in Pieria, under the shadow of Olympus, how and why is Orpheus the one expected to make a difference in the identity of the Macedonians?

My theory is that they would care enough for it only if being Thracian was perceived as a threat. The Macedonians did not want to worship a figure that was viewed as Thracian (even in a very loose sense of the term). True enough, the article confirms that at the time Macedonians and Thracians had many tensions.

We also should remember that ancient kingdoms and states did not have the concept of sovereignty and nationality in the way we do now. Macedonia and Thrace were neighbours and as such their populations blended and bled into each other’s region. There were surely Thracians and Macedonians practicing Orphism in Macedonia (and vice versa). If Archelaus considered Orphism was gaining a lot of ground and feared for the established “mainstream” Greek religion, perhaps he did try to macedonify and hellenise Orpheus. Or maybe he just wanted to weaken Thracians and solidify his kingdom in its Greek orientation. Mojsik didn’t analyse this as much but I guess more or less my theory can work with his study.

But all these are very unsafe theories since we are talking about scarce yet various tales associated with ancient beliefs. I don’t think we have enough evidence for any certain conclusion.

Hopefully this made some sense because it is super late at night (or super early in the morning!) and my speech might be a little incoherent.

Omg thank you so much for sharing the endings of Get You In & You Only Live Twice! That was really nice and I wasn’t expecting it. I know a lot of authors might not want to say in case they ever decide to get back to finishing their stories, so I really thought I was taking a shot at the dark when I asked.

I’m one of those people that actually like spoilers (can’t handle suspense and it helps me cope/prepare for the end) so I’m extra excited to read them should you ever come back.

My dumb ass actually read Get You In before I read Into the Blood and it was a happy mistake since it gave me so many “aha” moments and a deeper appreciation for Juice and Olivia’s old relationship when I read Into the Blood. I ended up rereading Get You In afterwards and I find myself picturing Juice losing his shit when Olivia broke up with him in college. As for the ending now… That’s batshit crazy that Olivia has a kid haha I can’t even begin to imagine her trying to cook something besides grilled cheese for that kid. Thank god for Juice, who was practically born to be a mother. I wonder why the club wanted Olivia dead. Oof, that’s gotta be tough for Jax considering their childhood together and then to find out it was Opie instead?! Phewwww! Btw thank you so much for sparing Donna from the life. She deserved better! I’m a little sad for Opie but I mean… I’m team Juice so 😬.

As for You Only Live Twice, I audibly gasped at the mole part. I can’t believe you’re killing off a character though!!! Please don’t say Juice or Olivia!!! Or on second thought, please do because with the way you write, I know you’ll make it incredibly sad but incredibly beautiful too and it’ll be part of the journey in your writing.

Hmmm actually I think it would be kinda neat to read the fics in reverse order. Like you said, it would fill in the blanks on things i allude to in GYI and make you really understand what Juice and Olivia mean to each other.

Have you read Come With me Tonight? That’s the original Juice/Olivia fic. And it’s finished, as is its (crack-ish) sequel, Under My Skin. Honestly the sequel isn’t entirely “canon” (my personal canon) because it’s SUCH crack, but it’s still fun.

Pointing curiously at all the different types of trucks, Claire asks Cas to name them off, but Cas truly couldn’t guess the different names for these things if his life depended on it. At first he tried Googling the answers, but Claire’s patience waned so he started just making them up instead.

It’ll only be a problem for him once his adoptive-sister is fielding phone calls from kindergarten when Claire calls an Excavator a “Whoozitkabob”.

It’ll be very hard for Cas not to laugh.

After a while of watching the free (loud) show, Cas realizes it really is 90 degrees and they should probably be keeping hydrated.

This is why Castiel isn’t a parent.

Cas smiles what he hopes is a normal smile because he feels like he’s lost all control of himself being in this man– Dean’s presence. Somehow his brain tells him to reach out his hand and before he knows it, their fingers are intertwined and he’s speaking, “Hello, Dean. I’m Castiel.”

Then he stares some more but maybe Dean doesn’t mind because he’s staring right back and it’s giving Castiel all the time in the world to study every fleck of gold etched into the summer green of this man’s eyes. In no time at all he moves onto the constellation of freckles that are patterning his cheeks which, if Castiel isn’t mistaken, are starting to red in a blush that may be the most adorable thing he’s ever seen– Claire aside.

Oh yeah, Claire.

Castiel reluctantly lets go of the man’s hand when Claire snaps them out of their trance, “We need you to fix whatever we’ve got broken.”

Dean glances at Castiel’s left hand– not subtle at all – and then looks towards Claire fondly, “Is that what your dad said?” Castiel doesn’t have time to focus on the fact Dean thinks Claire is his because if he thought his mind was reeling from Dean’s check of his marital status then it’s absolutely worthless when the man looks back towards him and winks.

Carve up his tombstone because Castiel is a goner.

Claire, apparently completely unaware of the absolute stupor she’s put her uncle in, continues chatting, “Oh, he’s not my dad, that’s my uncle, Cas.”

“Cas.” Dean looks like he’s mulling the nickname over like an award winning wine and then he smiles. “Well, it’s an absolute pleasure to meet you and your uncle Cas.”

Claire beams before gasping loudly, “OH MY GOD, UNCLE CAS! IT’S A ZINGAMAHOOEY!”

Send that tombstone via express mail because Castiel just died of embarrassment.

Dean’s face screws into something too cute to be legal and he shoots a glance at Castiel, clearly looking for an explanation. Somehow Castiel finds words, “She kept asking what they were called and I’m clueless.”

Cas could swear Dean’s eyes twinkle before speaking again, “Well maybe I could teach you… uh… over dinner?”

“Oh yes please! I love chicken tenders!” Claire, apparently paying attention again, chimes in.

Cas is about to object but then Dean laughs again and says, “Of course! I know the best spot for chicken tenders.”

With Claire satisfied and looking again at the construction site, Dean looks back toward Cas with nervousness etched across his face, “Is— uh— I mean— if you want to..”

He can’t help but enthusiastically put the man out of his misery, “I’d love to.”

And they do.

A week later they’re munching on burgers and chicken tenders listening to Dean talk about all the different kinds of trucks and Claire try and tell him he’s wrong because Uncle Cas said.

wow! okay! i am simply so starstruck thinking that i spent so much time wishing and waiting for an original album and it’s here. it’s beautiful. you can tell they’ve matured so much from their first release!!! it shows in the sounds, their voices and their lyrics. my favorite part of it might be how different every song feels from the other, they’re all so individually unique and unforgettable. i think kirstie shines here the most, both lyrically and vocally-wise, and it’s a well-deserved spotlight since my favorite songs off the album are the ones where she played a major role into. i’m so proud of every single one of them and i wish them SO much success with this. i’m gonna be enjoying this album a lot in the future and i’m so honored to live through this era of their careers!!!!!!
