i have so many thoughts about aqua in kh3 and i'm really happy with how the design turned out so i'm putting it up here
design notes under the cut!!
fundamental changes to her design:
changed the design of her leotard from having the really odd boob cups to having a heart design over the breast instead
yellow straps instead of pink to match better with the design (matches the stone in her keyblade armor pauldrons). i also resent the fact that they had to randomly slap pink on the girl LMAO
changed her boots from being pointed to match more with terra's boots while keeping the same armored look, also repeating the heart motif + giving her flat shoes rather than heels
kh3 specific changes:
one pauldron instead of two because of when she sent her keyblade armor up with terra, indicating that something is missing
she tore up her sleeves to use as bandages and never took them off again
eventually ditched the corset. underneath she has the same panels on the sides of the leotard that terra has
torn up and dirty drape thingies on account of the whole being in hell thing
short hair because there's a scene in my brain where she impulsively chops it all off after sora and riku rescue her. in my brain. in my heart
also darkqua notes (i'm sorry anti-aqua is such a stupid name):
taking a lot of cues from canon but basically adapting them into my kh3 design
black tear streaks because girl she's in fucking misery
eyes made to look more like a heartless's
CLAWS <3
long hair because it's sexy and also a fun parallel to riku (as well as chopping her hair off later)

[ID: 2 drawings of Naminé from Kingdom Hearts in a field of purple and orange flowers. She is wearing a white dress with frills and a flower crown with a flower crown in her hand. Her body is facing towards the left, but her head is turned to look forward. She has a smile on her face. Her shoes are covered as the grass seems to be quite tall.
The drawing on the left is set at night with balls of light representing fireflies while the drawing on the right is set at day with a camera flare giving the impression that someone is taking Naminé's photo in that image, unlike the one on the left.]

oogugh husk emin... could you imagine if their s/o got involved one way or another ( 'hey honey why is there a person shaped lump in the fridge and how'd you get it in there-' or 'i just wanted some apple juice, who is this-' ) and he very briefly snaps out of his zombie trance and goes full 'WIFE? WIFE? WIFE? WIFE? W-' mode instead and is desperately trying to get to reader after that/just doubles his efforts to get back to his version of normal but like, Bass Boosted this time
Opening the big freezer room thing, the twins have to go find something you stored away a while ago. Your back is turned when suddenly a large sheet-covered shape in the corner if the room starts to twitch. You do not notice since it does not make any noise and begin to leave, but the shape begins to move, knocking over something. This finally catches your attention, and you turn your head to see it. The sheet is stumbling closer and closer to you without hesitation.
This, naturally, startles you. A scream leaves you. Your body kicks into overdrive as you drop whatever you come in to grab and attempt to escape out the door. This makes the shape move faster and more desperately. You both leave the room to find Emmet standing outside the door. Running into his arms, you see the shape moving closer still. Your lovely dragon boyfriend seemed to dispatch a harsh attack onto the poor dragon as he reached forward to slam close the door.
It was quiet for a moment. You attempted to regain your breath while Emmet just stared at the freezer door. Eventually, a loud pounding started on the door, scaring you again. Emmet just sighed and shook his head.
"What is that!?" You had enough of all this confusion, "Is that a person?"
"Mmm, nope!" The Reshiram man turned to you, "Well. Not a human. Don't worry." Now you certainly felt even more worried. Your concern was plain to see as Emmet let out a sigh again. "That is an empty husk from when Ingo and I were one person. It is verrrry eerie. Do not mess with it anymore." Empty husk? You felt even more bewildered. From when he and Ingo were the original dragon of Unova? Why did they keep their empty husk in a freezer?!
It kept banging on the door, too! Loudly! You wanted to grumble about the madness of this all. Emmet seemed mostly unbothered, however. "Do not go in there," he said simply, "It wakes up at random and then hunts Ingo and I down to reabsorb us. That is annoying, yep." You blinked a few times. Reabsorb them? Like... into its body? A shiver went down your spine.
"... Alright," you nodded. Emmet smiled brightly and offered his hand to lead you away. You rejected it and said that you needed to be alone to process all that. He seemed to understand and left you your thoughts. The banging on the freezer door never ended. Was it okay in there? How frightening.
Just as you were about to step away, a noise stopped you. Not there beating - no. A voice.
You froze. Again.
"Kh-kh..." a sound came from the other side of the door. The pounds echoed out still. You tilted your head. "Kh-kh... ma... may...?" Desperation almost seemed leaden in the sounds. You pressed a hand to the door. It felt colder than even before. The pounding instantly became more ferocious. "May-tuh..." The freeze seemed to intensify. The harsh hits on the door turned into an uncomfortable creaking. You took a panicked step back.
Damage to the door's integrity became more and more apparent. You flinched as it soon gave way to the harsh hits from the husk inside. The door fell apart before your eyes. The husk was visible on the other side. It appeared eerily like the twins with pieces of ice decorating its body in patches. Its gaze was trained on you intensely. "Mate..." it mumbled out and took an unsteady step toward you. You barely had time to process its words when it hugged you tightly. Its face buried into your nape. A icy winds lapped at your skin from the husk.
Though, the oddly tender moment was interrupted by two sets of feet echoing out against the floor. Ingo and Emmet soon emerged out from a nearby hall. They were stricken by the sight before them. However, this only caught the husk's attention. Its head turned to them with eyes like a predator. It rushed them suddenly. You could only watch as it tackled Ingo and began to glow with a bright light. Emmet let out a panicked scream.
Ingo was gone when the light faded, and only the husk remained with Zekrom accents to its body.
Well, this seemed a right mess, did it not?

After searching about, I've found others who've had and thought about the same issue that I did, which is that the Kingdom Hearts fandom has a HUGE amatonormativity problem. Which, yeah, most fandoms do, but the difference here is that the KH fandom is pretty small, which makes it way more prevalent.
There's a good amount of people who think Sora is aroace, grayromantic, or alloromantic asexual, but they keep it to themselves for risk of being harassed by shippers. They have to protect themselves with "aphobes DNI" on the few posts they do post about it. They have to continuously reblog their own art or go to a confession blog to lament about it.
And it's sad! This is saddening! And the thing is, I do ship SoRiKai. At least the minimum amount, enough to be fully invested in what's going on in canon. Because, canonically? They do care about each other intensely enough to usually go beyond the bounds of typical friendship. Especially Sora. The way he thinks, the things he does, it's all so grandeur in comparison to the things people do in real life for their friends. He flat out says he wants to be with Riku and Kairi forever in one of the first games.
The problem is that people still think being aroace means being apothi and aplatonic, but that's not the case. Sora feels platonic attraction so quickly, frequently, and intensely that it even puts off new characters he meets in the game. He's affectionate, uplifting, and confident(most of the time). But people can't see aroace people as a whole as anything but negative and loveless. Which is just plain not the case for all of us. Aspec people post about the different ways aspec people think all the time! It's mostly the only thing in the aromantic and asexual tags, and I frequent those a lot! So I'd know!
This is an issue thats brought up over and over and over again, and it's that being aroace-- feeling exactly zero romantic or sexual attraction-- does not mean you also feel zero platonic or queerplatonic (or sensual or alterous or any tertiary) attraction. It does not mean you can't feel attraction that is just as intense as allos feel romantic or sexual attraction. Sora has always attributed his strength and confidence to his friends, to his heart that belongs to all of his friends. He feels platonic attraction so intensely that it literally powers him up. It's the main theme of the entire Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Saying that Sora feels queerplatonic attraction towards Riku and Kairi does not mean he'd feel any less than if he were romantically and/or sexually attracted to them.
Thinking that queerplatonic and/or platonic attraction is less than romantic and/or sexual attraction is incorrect, aphobic, amatonormative, and exactly contrary to what Kingdom Hearts the franchise is partially trying to do.
Kingdom Hearts normalizes healthy, platonic, life-long relationships, which wasn't well represented in the early 2000s. Most media represented friendships as on the back burner, especially when pit against romantic relationships. Affectionate arospecs watched shows and movies when they were younger seeing the main character dismiss their friends, grow out of them, or outright hate them, and then have their problems be solved by a romantic partner. Toxic or unhealthy friendships (and also sibling relationships) were the norm, so having Kingdom Hearts, and a few other media I can't think of right now, be made where there's no romance outside of background characters and established ones fron Disney Movies, and where friendship is treated as equal and as the most important, was revolutionary.
Tons of Shounen anime do this, too. Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Hero Academia, most sports anime. Then there's other stuff like most magical girl anime, Soul Eater, Little Witch Academia, Promised Neverland, Lucky Star, Baccano, most Miyazaki movies. A lot of popular anime are popular because people love the friendships between characters. And I bet most people in Kingdom Hearts love it specifically because of the friendships too. They like that they're friends. Because their friendships are wholesome, and healthy, and good. They make us feel good. KH isn't "Queerbaiting"(which is only ever brought up for mlm ships and never for aspecs or wlw) for having Riku and Sora care about each other and get along. Just because pop culture has forced f/m relationships start specifically because a girl and a boy get along(if even that happens), doesn't mean that all characters in all media that get along are romantically into each other. Both of those are bad and thinking that its not is a double standard. Platonic chemistry and romantic chemistry are not the same (even if pop culture media continue to try and make it seem like they are). But so many posts trying to prove Sora is actually canonically secretly in romantic love with Riku and Kairi only have evidence of him just being his regular old self, doing things he canonically sees as platonic-- things that are platonic.
It's not an issue of people headcanoning Sora with romantic/sexual attraction (or otherwise) for the other characters, it's about the harassing of other people that it's canon and the blatant aphobia and amatonormativity. All that's canon right now is that Sora cares about his friends, which includes Riku and Kairi, and the fact that I got so much negativity back for saying he's aroace and feels queerplatonic attraction for them only proves that some people in this fandom think aroace people can't care about anyone strictly because they don't feel romantic or sexual attraction. The aphobia in the fandom needs to be addressed, and the aspec content should be allowed to be post freely without push back.
TLDR; Once the main Kingdom Hearts fandom stops seeing every little interaction between certain characters as canonically romantic, it'll finally be a more open and healthy community that people won't be afraid to engage in.
I want this to be helpful to read and for someone to learn something. And if aphobia shows up again, maybe take that person to the side and say that's not cool? Defend us aspecs, please? Cause all that..really makes me feel bad about and put off Kingdom Hearts completely. (And again! I ship SoRiKai! But people that don't ship it shouldn't have to go through this either!)

why Player/Brain (Plain if u will) is already a great ship
1) its angsty
player doesnt remember anything from their previous life, but dont you think theyd be curious? Brain holds all the memories, but brain knows that the tragedy would be overwhelming for player. This could lead to some potential dilemma on how to tell player. Alternatively, brain could also be blunt (as always) but this would still overwhelm player. This would lead to potential hurt/comfort and apology scenes between the two. Additionally, brain is the sole survivor in khml Scala from the tragedy of daybreak town. I would imagine its alienating and lonely, especially without chirithy. Seeing player must give him relief, but when player tells him they dont remember anything, brain is back to square one. Players memories, though forgotten, are not lost. The more the duo spends time together, the more they can grieve what was lost. Together they can make new friends and turn a new page, for themselves and the future
2) unlikely friends (therefore its funny)
Khux player is canonically not talkative and brain is not the type to talk bc hes friendly. I doubt brain saw player as a friend and player probably did not consider brain as a close friend. But with khml, theyre probably scrutinized for being the odd ones out in scala. Two outsiders (clodleth fam youll like this) finding company with each other, though they may have different views on how to make friends. Id imagine their friendship is a clumsy one, but theyd learn that they compliment e/o quite well. With their undying loyalty, grievances for ephemer and their friends, willingness to sacrifice themselves, and openness to learn about each other, i think they would trust eo the most in khml. They can also be hilariously blunt so bickering would def be their love language
3) brain (lol) and brawn
Brain sent player to go check out grand central station while brain stayed back to do the lore lifting, must i say more? You cannot tell me brain would be fascinated with players rusted starlight and send them out for data
4) default black and white duo/light and darkness duo
Default player is shown to wear white clothes with blond hair, meanwhile brain has black hair with black attire. We love our black n white duos (ie skuld/eph, xeha/eraqus, brain/eph, bugs bunny n daffy duck). They r aesthetically pleasing!!!
5) last bit, but they wouldnt even realize theyre in love this ship lives off the foundation of complete hurt/comfort and trust, not romance
They are slow burn to the max, if anything. They protect eo in battle ferociously, but only bc they need eo for their respective goals. They sleep in the same bed to comfort eo for nightmares but they arent friends. Brain cooks breakfast, but— 🤓
Anyway as khml comes out and we may not get any plain crumbs at all, pls remember me at my grave 😚🙏 i ofc will be sticking around for the plot. Im so excited for khml AAAA

Language Barrier
Did I mention this fic is self-indulgent? Because it is. Also, not me hoping certain writers I respect accidentally stumble onto my work and enjoy it.
Chapter 4
(~2.3k words, see chapter list here)
Tumblr media
You feel like an idiot.
You probably look like one, too. In the past twenty four hours, you've jumped off a fifty-foot wall, literally asked a god to kill you, and been shuffled back to the Knights' headquarters by three familiar faces who were definitely not expecting you to blurt out, "Please don't bow to me, we should check what color my blood is first, just in case!"
...To be fair, they were probably more surprised about not being able to understand you rather than what you said, but still. An idiot. You can already tell this is going to be one of those things you lie awake cringing about years down the road.
Your sole saving grace is the fact that it was still early when the four of you arrived back in town. So as the three women ushered you through the winding streets and up the stairs, you noticed only two other citizens milling about, both of whom seemed too preoccupied with their own business to take much notice of your group.
Of course, your mind is running a mile a minute the whole time. How was I supposed to know this wasn't an imposter au??? Because it certainly doesn't appear to be, if the kneeling and relieved looks are anything to go by. You try to tell yourself that you couldn't have known, that it was better to be safe than sorry once you saw the statue and heard the whispers, but it's hard to convince yourself as you watch Jean slump down into her office chair the moment you return, rubbing her temples and looking like she hasn't slept in weeks.
Apparently, hearing your god went for a stroll through town before jumping from a high ledge and disappearing will do that to you.
Lisa pats her back sympathetically while murmuring something you can't make out. Meanwhile, Amber energetically inserts herself into your field of vision. "Tgi o zkm aue mtonzetg xaue kigxm? Kbgn aue ejgkxrg tkzgk? Jrauc aue kqor mtonzksuy uz qtoxj?"
You stare blankly. She smacks a hand to her forehead in obvious abashment. "Nmg, yvuunc, exxuy, o zumxul... sxk... rro zyap zkm aue g yygrm lu xkzgc." She sighs a little - mostly at herself, it seems - before smiling sheepishly and gesturing wordlessly toward the conference table on one side of the room. Hesitantly, you move to take a seat. She beams. "Egqu! Rro kh znmox qigh nzoc zgnz xkzgc-"
"Xkhsg," Jean cuts in, making both of you look in her direction. She gives you a slight nod before focusing in on Amber. "Rro kqgz kxgi lu zgnz. Ykxknz ksuy krvukv jo kqor aue uz xknzgm jgkzyto."
Amber salutes, and Jean rattles off what you assume are orders of some kind before the outrider gives her a firm nod. Turning to you, she sweeps a bow before offering you a cheerful wave and disappearing through the office door. Lisa gives Jean one last pat on the shoulder before heading out herself. (Whether she has her own directives or she's simply out to brunch, you're not sure.)
Meanwhile, the Acting Grand Master rummages around in her desk before pulling out an alarmingly thick stack of papers. Yikes. You certainly don't envy her workload. You watch as she selects a couple sheets from the top, places them on the center of her desk, and proceeds to bring the rest... over to you. They're blank, you realize, as she sets a feather pen next to the stack in front of you. Curiously, you look at her, but she just gives you a vague smile and gestures towards them before disappearing out the door as well. You listen to the click as the door closes behind her. For a moment, you do nothing but stare at the plain stack of papers in awe.
Did... did I just get Klee'd?
Tumblr media
Jean returns a short while later to find you scribbling furiously. You've already gone through four... five sheets of paper, though none of them are full. You give her the barest hint of a nod as she offers you a glass of water, before she returns to her desk and whips out a quill to do her own work.
You're writing down everything. People, mostly. Every playable character, future playable character, might-be-a-playable-character makes the list. You've got one for each nation that's been released so far, one for what you know of Sumeru, and one that covers both Snezhnaya and Khaenri'ah, labelled "People to avoid (just to be safe)". Good-looking or not, some of those people are definitely psycho; now that you're safe, you remind yourself that you're too young to die. Maybe after you've met all the other characters, finally seen Fontaine and Natlan, and learned how to do all that over-powered magic shit isekai protagonists usually do, then you can seek them out. But that's at the bottom of your list for now.
The top of your list being, obviously, figure out a way to communicate and find out what the fuck is going on.
You furrow your brow thinking about it. As things stand, it seems inevitable that you'll have to learn this strange language of theirs in order to get by, but... in all honesty, you're not sure you can. Not just because languages aren't your forte, but because you're literally not sure your vocal cords have the same capabilities theirs do. There are so many guttural sounds and long, vowel-less mishmashes that they often strike you as a keyboard smash vocalized. If it weren't for a few slight regularities you're starting to pick up on, you'd almost believe it was just that.
A light tap on the door makes both you and Jean look up. There's a soft click as it opens, and a giant stack of pancakes enters confidently.
Oh my god, that's Noelle.
Said maid-knight breezes over to the conference table, shifts the loaded platter easily to one hand as she offers you a delicate curtsy, then holds it out to you with a smile. Evidently, this ridiculous amount of food is all for you.
Come to think of it, I am pretty hungry, you realize. The apple you ate with Venti was surely hours ago now, if the amount of light breaching the windows is any indication. Hastily, you straighten up the papers and push them to the side. She sets the platter down and takes a step back, watching and waiting attentively as you spear a large bite and stick it in your mouth.
If the apple was good, the pancakes are heavenly. They're thick and fluffy, with just the right amount of sweetness, and they practically melt on your tongue as you dive back in for more. At this rate, maybe you really will eat them all. You did skip dinner yesterday, after all. (For no reason, in retrospect. Thanks, unnecessary paranoia.) Noelle beams when you give her a thumbs up and go for another bite, and in the background, you notice some of the tension ease from Jean's shoulders as well.
Then a hand reaches over the table and grabs your papers.
"Mmm!" you object, with a mouth full of food.
The culprit raises his hands in defense. "Es ykomuruvg, xaue kigxm, zah jo kqor uz kqgz g quur zg yonz, lo aue ztuj jtos," Kaeya says coolly, and you wonder when he even came in. It must have been right after Noelle, but you were too focused on the pancakes to notice. You eye him warily as he pores over the top sheet - Mondstadt - before sighing and shaking his head at Jean. "Kbo xkbkt tkky yonz zvoxiy kxulkh. Aue egs ztgc uz qyg xau erkbur tgoxgxhor, zah zo yquur kqor kbkc zum xau qxuc zai zau xul ya."
You assume that's the long way of saying "I can't read shit", because Jean sighs for the nth time as he returns the papers, not even bothering to flip through the rest of them. "Ykny mtoquur xul etg jtoq lu yjxuikx tu knz tuozgazoy znmox cut," she responds. "Zah kny ztykuj zikvdk uz jtol mtonzetg. Eh rrg yztauiig, yonz ztygc jkyuvvay uz tkvvgn."
At this, everyone in the room turns to look at you. You stiffen, and your gaze flits from face to face, trying to figure out what might have been said. After a moment, you offer them a shrug, not knowing what else to do. This seems to be an acceptable (if not expected) response, though, and Kaeya turns back to Jean. "Unc kyrk joj aue jtky xul?"
"Xul cut, zyap g krvaui yxknzu. Xkzlg egjxkzyke, o ztuj ztgc uz srkncxkbu sknz. O qtonz jzo kh zykh lo kc tgi kxamol zau erzigdk enc yonz yo mtotkvvgn lo kc tgi."
He nods, casting another glance your way before moving to sit down at the other end of the table. This seems to be the end of the conversation, because Jean lowers her head to refocus on her work, while Kaeya stares pensively into space, mindlessly running his thumb over the ridges of a coin in his hand. Only Noelle turns back to you and offers a reassuring smile.
She still has yet to say a word, and you realize that's her way of being considerate of your situation. Still, between her and Venti, you're starting to realize just how much you can communicate with only a look. You give her a small smile back, and gesture to the chair beside yours - she's been standing attentively the whole time, but she's going to be there a while if you're really going to eat all of these. She shakes her head and waves her hands as if to say she couldn't possibly, but when you gesture again, she relents and takes a seat. You give a satisfied nod and return to eating. For once, the silence is almost comfortable.
You're almost finished with the food when the next interruption comes.
Correction: you are finished, the food is not.
You push your plate back to Noelle, a slightly guilty look on your face, when there's a series of sharp taps on the door. You jump a little, but no one else does; in fact, Kaeya and Noelle have no reaction at all, while Jean only looks up long enough to say, "Kygkrv ksui to."
This time, it's Eula who enters, looking equal parts graceful and imposing as she strides over the threshold. She scans the room like a hawk, and when her eyes land on you, she takes several steps in your direction before dropping to one knee and placing a hand on her chest. "Zo yo g zgkxm xutun uz zkks aue, xaue kigxm. Nmaunzrg knz ztkxxai ykitgzysaixoi kxg zyus kzgtazxulta, kygkrv cutq zgnz o sg zg xaue kiobxky."
To your credit, you do not blurt out the same stupid thing as the last time someone kneeled to you. Instead, you give her a slight bob of your head, even though it's somewhat off-putting to see someone so prideful kneeling before you. On the other hand, you suppose it's actually quite in-character of her to be so formal, so you try not to be too bothered by it. "It's nice to meet you, Eula."
You think that might be the first normal thing you've said so far.
She gives you a searching look before dipping her head in acknowledgement and rising to face Jean. "Xul knz kqgy lu eitkoiollk, xkhsg jtg o zorvy knz zyor. Erkzgtazxulta, ujkhrg jtg kyuxiay zyas kh zau to knz jrkol kxkncksuy, kyagikh knz vsgi tu ktovytumgxj ygc ezvsk."
Jean nods, looking disappointed but not surprised. "Juuzyxkjta. Qtgnz aue xul mtoum rrg knz egc zau kxknz. Kygkrv kqgz g zgky, aue ejgkxrg cutq unc kxkc mtozogc xul, tknz."
Eula nods, dips her head to you again, and then takes a seat across from her fellow captain. Meanwhile, Noelle rises with equal grace and takes your plate, curtsying again before leaving without a sound.
This time, the ensuing silence is infinitely more awkward. You no longer have anything to occupy you, so you sit stiffly, listening to the tick of the clock on the wall. Eula seems to be doing the same, and Kaeya flips his coin idly. You're not quite sure what you're all waiting for, mind you, but you figure it's best to just go along with it at this point.
You consider working the lists some more, just to make sure you didn't miss anything, but you already know you didn't. Let's face it: anything worth remembering, you were way too invested in Genshin to forget easily. The mere existence of your little lists was just the result of sheer boredom, and not because you thought they'd actually do anything for you. Still, you're considering reading back over them, just to feel busy, when a sudden commotion erupts in the hallway.
Three voices blend together: one annoyed, one gruff, and one whiny. Evidently, the racket has caught the others' attention as well, because every single one of you is looking towards the door when it suddenly bursts open, revealing a straining outrider. "Tkbk lo xkzygs iaroj yvuxj knz ykmxgni, knz mtozig jtgxm xkzygs rrozy jkzykawkx xaue kitkykxv!" she exclaims, dragging... something you can't see from here... behind her. Hers is the annoyed voice.
The whiny one, possibly the 'thing' being dragged, responds. "Ng, ztgi kc zyap zxuy yonz zau xkzgr? O kbgn ykigrv uz kh, ymtuy uz mtoy!"
The last voice is drowned out by the scraping of chairs as both Jean and Eula rise to their feet. Amber gives one final tug, and she and a figure clad in green go tumbling onto the office floor.
Now you're on your feet as well. "Venti!?"
Rubbing the back of his head, the bard peels himself off the ground with a sheepish chuckle. "Urrkn, xaue kigxm."
You gape at him. Your brain is rapidly churning out questions: Why did you dump me at Windrise and leave? Why did Amber bring you here? How did she find you? ...Why was she dragging you?
All of those questions fly out the window, however, when Diluc enters behind him, looking past everyone else in the room to address Jean. "Sorry xul knz egrkj," he says calmly. "Yg you tgi kky, we zon tg jkzikvdkta vsah to knz jgux."
......whAT?!
