i think about zim and the tallest and their inherently, nearly parasitic relationship to each other a lot.
i think about how all of them are, objectively, mostly blind to this fact as well, zim blinded by the swift and stark obedience that he performs under the delusion that he is doing something for the good of his leaders and his empire, and the tallest blinded by their total arrogance and rage over the fact that zim cannot read any of their cues that he is a nuisance. still, it is so obvious that the back and forth is there.
i know that this particular example probably wasn't purposeful in florpus and was mostly just so the audience could see dib's point and the narrative similarities between zim and him, but i think a lot about zim's silence when dib says, "you know, my dad doesn't appreciate what i do, either" after zim explains how the tallest are not coming to bring him back home. i think a lot about that. the impact and the implications behind one simple sentence from dib. i imagine, to zim, this sort of felt like a slap in the face. the first word besides "my tallest" that's ever explained how zim wants them, how zim, in his own way, almost loves them. and it's a word from earth. it's a word that implies a built in, unconditional caring between human beings. it's a word that zim had just said in a mocking tone of voice to dib moments ago in reference to his plan to replace his real dad. and, suddenly, in a single instance, the weight of the word has seemed to hit him.
i think the saddest part of this parallel is that dib has the understanding that because he and his dad are biologically related, unconditional love is the expected thing, it's the supposed natural progression of things. zim and the tallest, though—they don't have any of that. you could argue that they're barely even acquaintances. there is no understanding of what is supposed to happen with them. there is no built in hope of having them step up to the plate the way dib hopes with his dad. i don't think zim truly understands this, though. as if zim can completely comprehend isolation. isn't that apart of an invader's duty? isn't that what he was trained to do? and isn't zim an invader? isn't he?
after all of this, after all of florpus, long after dib had first used that word, dad, in relation to the tallest, how dib said his dad doesn't appreciate what he does, one of the last things zim asks the tallest as he is witnessing their last moments across that transmission is: does this please you? in other words, do you appreciate what i have done for you?
dialogue wise, this is emotionally wrecking enough, but i think, visually, it is equally if not more disarming and depressing. i really, really, really love the imagery of the scene right before it cuts to the tallest burning in their puppet florpus flames. because it's a silly visual gag, yes, two flailing tallest puppets—but zim talking to two distorted tallest silhouettes, not noticing (or, rather, caring about) the difference between this and their usual way of appearing when they're in a transmission—zim talking to a literal representation of how the tallest have always existed in his head, as two distorted silhouettes, as delusions—that is insanely succinct in describing the true detriment of zim and the tallest's relationship to each other, at least to me.
this is, in my opinion, the most fucked up imagery in florpus, maybe even the entire series to me—and, most likely, none of the invader zim crew meant it to come across quite like that. zim's performance of normalcy in the face of what he is unaware is the tallest's last living moments. the delayed video feed in the transmission, shortly followed by complete and utter panic from the tallest, who were possibly oblivious to the fact that zim had even contacted them amongst their chaos. zim almost seeming as if he is staring at his own reflection in the screen rather than right at the tallest. a physical representation of what their entire relationship has been built on since the beginning—a blurry idea, a vague delusion of a bond that is in actuality no more than a fatal, life long misunderstanding on each end. it's the most palpably gut wrenching thing in the whole film for me, and i don't care that none of it was probably meant to pack that type of punch. it's always hit me hard.

Is this why Ark won't straight up confess?
Tumblr media
Oh my WORD I'd forgotten I made a meme of that. Long story short, yeah! Pretty much!
There's a cut (but still canonical) scene this is based on early in The Present is a Gift where Ark, sans memories, basically says he's very fond of Twig and he's happy he met her and is able to call her a friend. Twig doesn't straight up tell him she'll slide him a fifty if he never says that again in the original scene, but she gets VERY noticeably uncomfortable and he permanently backs off on the Words of Affirmation front.
After that, he has this lingering fear that she'll react the same way if he were ever to propose a romantic relationship, and so his ex-villain brain constantly comes up with elaborate schemes that minimize emotional risks and have Twig make the first move in response to actions he takes that may or may not be interpreted as platonic or perhaps something more, therefore shifting all risks off of himself in the process.
TL;DR--- Man's scared of rejection and has masterminded a situation in which Twig is the only one to risk direct rejection, therefore guaranteeing success... If she wasn't an idiot and would pick up on his hints.

If anyone, esp anyone diagnosed Autistic, wants to validate a very autistic but very not diagnosed chick who has done tonnes of research over years that like... my autism is valid even tho the system of diagnosing autism in adults (esp women, especially black women) has failed her...
I wouldn't say no 🙃

huntlow au where they're both in highschool (no boiling isles/magic au) and they meet because they both work at a summer camp.
they’re the two workers that literally never stop playing pranks on each other (along with the rest of the hexsquad) and every single camper thats new always asks returning campers if they’re together, to which they get a chorus of groans and after year three of them working together, literal screams of frustration. of course no one dares ask huntlow themselves.
I’m talking percabeth type of relationship.
It’s the end of the summer, year three of them working at this camp. Hunter’s uncle owns it, and Willow would probably commit arson on the camp to spite Hunter’s uncle if it wasn’t such a great place to work and for kids to have a fun, free summer.
And if it wasn’t a way for Hunter himself to slip out of his uncle’s grip, except for the few times he visits the camp to check in on how it’s running. Those days find Hunter with shaking hands and he’s quiet and resigned. The kids hate it. Hunter’s one of their favourite councilors and they hate seeing him so anxious. (They also want to commit arson against his uncle. Willow gives them high fives for that. Luz says she couldn’t be prouder. It makes Hunter smile, maybe just a bit, and that’s enough.)
The kids have all supposedly gone to bed about 30 minutes ago, and one by one Hunter and  Willow’s friends slipped away under various excuses. So now it was just the two of them, and it was also Willow’s birthday in, oh, probably roughly 5 minutes, if he’s right in thinking it’s almost midnight. Hunter thinks it’s a perfect time to ask the thing he’s wanted to since the first summer they worked together, and every school break they hung out together, always at her place or Luz or Gus, never his or Amity’s.
He’s sitting by the fire with her, and requests she waits while he goes to get something. She smiles and shoos him to get whatever it is he’s getting, “and quick, because I’ll be cold sitting here without you.”
He comes back with a cupcake, and a present hidden behind his back. He bought all sorts of her favourite things, but the first thing she’ll see when she opens it is a card open saying “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Hunter is so nervous.
Of course it doesn’t go to plan, but in a good way. She almost squishes the cupcake in his hands from how fast she jumps up to give him a hug. She even kisses him on the cheek, which totally does not make his face turn red.
She enjoys her cupcake, courtesy of him and the rest of the gang. Just as she’s about to open the present, just as Hunter’s breath stops in his throat, she places it down on the ground and turns to him abruptly. Her hands are twisting with each other, and she looks nervous. Hunter’s just about to ask her what’s wrong when she blurts out, “I like you! Like a lot. And I’d like to go out with you, if you want to too.”
Hunter’s brain stalls, and he can’t say a thing. Poor Willow gets more and more nervous the longer they sit there in silence, and just as she’s about to apologize and just leave, Hunter all of a sudden grabs her shirt and tugs her towards him, kissing her.
He almost immediately pulls away, bright red and sputtering apologies about how he should’ve asked first, he’s so sorry, and that was not how he meant to say his answer.
Willow laughs, and places a finger on his lips in a shushing gesture. “It’s okay Hunter. More than okay. I think I understand what you were trying to say.” and she pulls him in again.
They’re immediately startled by cheers and their friends, along with the kids that should be asleep now, rushing in to crush them in a group hug, all of them saying something along the lines of “FINALLY OH MY GOD”
When all is said and done and everyone’s gone to bed, Hunter points out she never opened his present, and he looks like he’s going to laugh. She lifts an eyebrow, and then opens the box.
The two of them look at each other, Willow back down to the box, and then back to Hunter. She laughs, and crushes him in a hug that sends them both sprawling to the floor in giggles.
Brilliant minds think alike after all.
