I took the plunge and got myself a @plumpaper planner! I found this one recently when I fell down a planner rabbit hole on YouTube. What drew my attention is the fact that you can customize EVERYTHING. In fact, this is ultimately why I chose to purchase one. With my hobbies, life, YouTube channel, and fitness - I track a lot of things and require an extreme level of organization. The layout I chose is a daily one that I broke out for Housework, Appointments, Workouts, What I Read Today, a To-Do list and a little accent box for something important that needs immediate attention that day. I also love that I can pack in extra pages for notes in the back, which is perfect for me to use as my reading journal to keeps notes on books I’m reviewing. 😍 The paper quality - I was quite shocked at how nice it is considering the price! Working in Nursing School

When you start a new nursing program they will tell you that they highly suggest that you do not work during the program, or if you do you should work minimum hours

I’m here to tell you that it is possible!

I started working when I was 16 years old and I have been working ever since, nursing school however did make me rethink my choice. When I started nursing school I was still working in the service industry and the scheduling and hours were ROUGH.

In December of 2018 I got hired as a Nurse Technician in the ER and it was an absolute dream come true. I cried on the phone to my recruiter when he told me they decided to hire me before even getting home from the interview.

It was at that time I decided that this was my dream and I would be able to do this no matter what.

Since I am considered a PRN position I do not have a required number of hours that I have to work each week like a full time or part time employee does. Instead, I work 16 hours a pay period || 8 hours a week. Even though this is the requirement, I usually work full time hours, and some over time hours because I live alone and have to pay rent, bills, and groceries.

My tips to surviving working in nursing school:

1. Make a schedule, fill out all your school requirements (test days, lecture/lab days, when home work is due, etc) .. then go in and pick days you can dedicate to work .

2. Stay ahead on assignments. If there are things that you can turn in ahead of time. DO SO! If there are things you cannot (like discussion boards) there is a feature in Blackboard where you can save a discussion board rely or post as a draft and set a reminder in your phone to remember to post

3. USE A PLANNER! I use the plum paper planner, and I was a long term user of the Erin Condren planner! If you use iCal or Google Calendar make sure that everything is synced correctly.

4. SAY NO : there are time where you will have to say no to things that you would really rather be doing, but if it falls on one of the days that you have outlined to get ahead on your school work (and you haven’t finished yet) you will have to say no.

5. Inform your friends/family/significant others that this is a time where you will be MIA for a lot of events, even important ones like weddings and baby showers, but since your schedule is so rigid (and it will be ) in nursing school you will have to pass on flights and roadtrips and even sometimes if it is in-town and you have clinical.

My Planner Obsession

Let’s kick things off with a confession: I am obsessed with planners.

As a full time student taking 17 credits and full time retail manager heading into the busy Holiday season, I enjoy anything that helps me feel like I have my life a little more put together and for me, that thing is my fancy day planner.

I have used a variety of planner brands over the last few years, but last semester while working on a project I stumbled across a brand I had never heard of called Plum Paper. This brand was amazing. I had the ability to customize my planner from beginning to end; the options were endless! I created my perfect planner: vertical layout, monthly goal pages, reflection pages, a budget section, and even a designated place to write down my favorite quotes. This planner is a masterpiece and while many would lose their minds at the thought of a planner that costs upward of $50, to me it is worth every penny and here is why...

1. Keeping it all Together

My planner has everything. It contains my work schedule, school workload, household duties, appointments, meal plans, self-reflections, and budgeting. if you can name it, I probably have something in my planner for it. My life is busy enough and if I can keep everything important in one place that’s a win for me.

2. LAYOUT, LAYOUT, LAYOUT!

Layout is everything when it comes to a good planner. No two people plan there days exactly alike so having flexibility in your layout is key! I love being able to select a custom layout and label each section of my planner to fit my unique scheduling needs.

3. The Mighty Pen and Paper

There is truly no better feeling than physically crossing something off of a to-do list. There is something so satisfying about putting pen to paper and it is a feeling you just can’t get from the screen of a smartphone or computer.

4. Reflection Time

On Sunday evening I dedicate one hour to sitting down in a quiet place with my planner and assortment of colorful pens to plan out the upcoming week. I enjoy carefully planning out my days and decorating my weekly spread. This is a time for me to think about the upcoming week and reflect on the previous week. In addition, at the end of each month I prepare for the upcoming month by creating new goals and filling out a reflection page for the previous month. It is a great opportunity to reflect and work on self-improvement as well as a great way to keep a focus on my mental health.
