Based off that one scene in eclipse lake I've decided that willow's favourite human music would be the world's worst fucking ear-bleeding hyper pop.
Hunter sits down to listen to it with her and has to rip the headphones off 4 seconds in because he thinks he's gonna throw up and willows like "omg are you okay?? I'm sorry we can stop listening to it if you need to :((" all concerned and hunter's like "no no it's fine! I just...don't know why you listen to this. Or how" and willows like "it makes my brain itchy :)" and hunter says "THAT'S A GOOD THING??"
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#willow park#hunter toh#hunter noceda#feel free to tag as ship. I'm not bc i want hyper pop willow to reach the widest possible audience#in all fairness i think most of the kids would have pretty eclectic music tastes across the board???#luz likes songs from anime and k-pop i feel but she also likes the merengue and latin pop music her mom loves and classic rock from her dad#probably also enjoys showtunes? at least the ones that are popular in her demographic (re: teens)#then i think in like. s3 specifically she'd be enjoying a lot of mountain goats and julieta venegas and mm@ta??#plus lucy dacus i feel#willow also likes lucy dacus (i already made a whole comic abt her liking breakup songs lol)#(LISTEN i just think that when she was little she lacked the vocabulary to express her feelings on the Amity situation-#-and the closest thing she had was angsty breakup songs. hunter shares this problem aftet belos ''dies'' and she gives him her playlist)#she likes mxmtoon and boy genius and some other artists she likes k-pop but overall her fav is wretched hyper-pop#(also i wish i could specify which k-pop groups luz and willow (and gus and Amity btw) would like BUT. I've only listened to blackpink)#(so feel free to weigh in on that)#i think zeno once said that hunter would like slipknot and other metal and metal-adjacent music??? feels right#but i also know he'd enjoy cavetown. yes yes it's basic but it's so him. it's a common hc for a reason#(FUN FACT AVI ROQUE RAINES VA SAID THEY'D LIKE IT TOO. CUTE AS SHIT)#he also likes manny's old rock CDs and even though he doesn't get the lyrics he likes camillas music too#he'd like a lot of orchestral arrangements too and acoustic pieces i think. movie scores and folk songs#gus likes everything i cannot stress this enough. if it is music gus is in love with it. even the weird shit. actually ESPECIALLY that#again. points at the scene from eclipse lake#but also his frame of reference for what's weird is skewed??? mongolian throat singing is more normal to him than Shawn Mendes#he likes carly rae japsen i stand by that from the comic#oh i also forgot to mention this in his section but huntet enjoys phoebe bridgers and the front bottoms#amity likes mitski and phoebe bridgers. she likes kate bush but also like late 90s/early 00s rnb???#she likes pop punk specifically paramore#i have more thoughts but I'm out of tags lol

INTERVIEW: Sarah Goldstone On Touring With Boygenius, Books, and Boston Octobers
Tumblr media
by Maya Santow
[…] Since her graduation from Boston University in 2009, Goldstone really has gone everywhere. Her talents on the keyboard, violin, and vocals have taken her across the globe in the past two years, touring internationally with indie artist Lucy Dacus, and now Boygenius—the indie rock supergroup composed of Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers.
Sitting in an East Boston café on June 18, just hours before performing with Boygenius at the Stage at Suffolk Downs, Goldstone describes how it felt finding out that she would be joining Boygenius on their tour while she was in Dacus’ band.
“Oh, I was really pumped,” she says. “Lucy had said that she wanted to have me there. Her manager called me and we chatted about it. It was exciting. I just love them as a group and separately.
“Boygenius: The Tour” began its United States run in early June and will be extending overseas to Europe in mid-August. Several of the tour dates, including the Boston show, are a part of the Re:SET Concert Series, featuring supporting acts like Bartees Strange, Dijon, and Clairo, with Boygenius as a headliner.
Although the tour didn’t begin until the summer of 2023, Boygenius’ first full-length studio album, titled “The Record,” was in the works much earlier. Goldstone recalls being told about the album at least a year before its March 2023 release—a powerful secret to have been keeping, given the album’s critical acclaim. “There was definitely a, you know, ‘Don’t put this on the internet’ kind of thing,” she says.
Goldstone’s first time hearing “The Record” took place at a listening party with Dacus’ touring crew in a Northern California AirBnB. With the knowledge that she would be touring with Boygenius, Goldstone approached her first listen to “The Record” from a largely practical angle.
“When you take a record that was recorded with all these different instruments, and you’re trying to squash it down to, ‘Okay, what’s a setup where I can do all of that?,’ there’s a lot of different ways you can do it,” she says. “So when I was listening through, that’s where my brain was going.”
Goldstone’s primary focus while listening was the keyboard. There is more to the instrument than meets the typical listener’s ear, she explains. “I feel like a lot of times people don’t know what keyboard’s role does because people know what piano sounds like, but maybe not the other stuff,” she says. “But there’s a lot of synth parts, there’s organ, there’s something called a Mellotron…all those weird sounds where people that come to hear it are like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’”
“My first reaction was really technical, but then I started listening for real and, you know, some of the songs make me cry as soon as I hear them,” says Goldstone of the 12 tracks that make up “The Record.” “Some of them are so funny, and, like, mean, and you know, that’s fun, too. But it took a minute for me to experience it that way,” she says.
As Goldstone began touring with Boygenius, a few tracks emerged as her favorites to perform live. “I love ‘Not Strong Enough.’ I mean, that’s like, ‘the one,’ right?” she says. “I love ‘Letter To An Old Poet’— not just because it’s the piano song! Actually, ‘Cool About It’ is one of my favorite songs, too. Plus the rockers, like ‘Satanist,’ and stuff like that, it’s just, like, so fun. But every song is good, yeah—no duds,” she laughs.
Goldstone also cites a fan project for Boygenius’ “True Blue”—a track heavily influenced by Dacus’ solo music style—as a favorite memory from the tour so far. “I think they all put blue post-it notes over their phone lights…as soon as they started playing it, blue lights came up,” she says. As it turned out, a similar fan project took place at the Boston show later that night: during the chorus of ‘True Blue,’ the audience raised heart-shaped cutouts of blue paper over their phone flashlights to create a sea of blue for the band to see. “It sounds funny to say, but it made all of us kind of emotional, actually,” she says of the earlier project.
Goldstone notes the synergetic power of Boygenius fans—the fan bases of the three indie rock forces coming together creates something greater than the sum of their parts, she says.
“People are there for the unit,” says Goldstone. “Probably everybody has one of them that they gravitate toward more just in their own personal listening, or someone’s music they’re familiar with more than the others, but you can’t tell that from the show, which I think is really cool. It doesn’t feel like you’re seeing individual fans of the three of them.”
Goldstone cites Boygenius’ closeness to one another as a major draw for their fans, aside from their music. “I feel like people are fans of their friendship,” she says. “Like, we all want that. We all want best friends that we like to make art with.”
Having been on tour together for a few weeks, says Goldstone, the band’s dynamic has begun to shine through even more onstage. “Now that everyone’s comfortable, they’re starting to horse around a little bit, and they’re jumping around,” she says of Dacus, Baker, and Bridgers. “You know, it’s just three friends that love each other so much, and they’re all very funny people. So it’s fun when they’re in the mood to do, like, comedy time during shows, you know?”
Closeness as a band—“tour camaraderie”—is a familiar feeling to Goldstone, who says that Dacus’ band grew very close during their 251 days of touring in 2021 and 2022. “Everyone’s on one bus, and everyone hangs out together on off days, and it does feel like a family road trip sometimes,” she says.
The Boygenius tour took a bit longer to achieve the same effect, says Goldstone. “It is a much bigger group. And everyone just works so hard, so there’s a little bit more distance with just getting to know everybody. I feel like now, a couple of weeks in, I’m starting to be friends with people on our own crew that maybe I didn’t get to hang with before, and that’s great,” she says.
One way in which the group has grown closer, says Goldstone, is through books. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given her philosophy major during her BU days, Goldstone says she always finds time to read while on tour, and exchanges titles with the other band members as well. “We’re all trading books,” says Goldstone.
On Dacus’ tour last year, says Goldstone, the band passed around Joan Didion’s “Play It as It Lays.” In a similar way to which fans of Boygenius bond over the often melancholy tones of their music, the band bonded over the “real bummer of a book,” says Goldstone. “We passed it around, and everyone was like, ‘Ugh, your turn.’ Like, this is brutal,” she laughs.
“So, yeah, there’s some exchange,” says Goldstone. “Lucy and I will exchange books a lot. Like, I’m really into a writer named Shirley Jackson, and Lucy read some last year.” Goldstone’s most recent tour read, Min Jin Lee’s “Pachinko,” she describes as an “instant classic,” and she plans to lend it to Julien Baker to read next.

What I think TMBS characters’ Spotify Wrapped would look like based entirely on vibes and my incredibly biased opinions:
Reynie
Reynie is introspective, the most openly emotional one in the group (i mean he literally declared how much he loves hugs in the S2 finale) and I 100% headcanon him as a hopeless romantic. We also know that he really likes literature and language, so I think he would like music that puts a lot of emphasis on lyrics. The first obvious artists I could think of were artists like Taylor Swift or maybe Conan Gray, and while he would probably enjoy these artists, I get the feeling he probably leans more indie-folk (because he’s a hipster and we all know it). Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell and maybe even Bob Dylan would suit Reynie’s confessional and heart-on-his-sleeve sort of attitude. For his more casual listens I could see him enjoying the likes of Fleetwood Mac, The Zombies and for more modern music perhaps Lucy Dacus, Flyte and Fleet Foxes. Now Reynie is definitely the type of person to have a ton of hyper-specific playlists for every single emotion he’s feeling and he also makes playlists for his friends and family all the time (he’s the sole cause behind Mr Benedict’s embarrassing 80s synth-pop phase). Ms Perumal plays a lot of Norah Jones, Duffy and Amy Winehouse so naturally, that trickles down into the bottom tracks of Reynie’s Spotify Wrapped list.
Top artist: Fleetwood Mac
Top track: Wild World - Cat Stevens
Sticky
While I could easily dismiss Sticky by saying that he probably only listens to classical music because that’s what smart people do that’s boring so let’s. have. fun. Given Sticky’s anxiety and overall state of mind, I think he would enjoy artists like Leith Ross and Orla Gartland whose music he can easily relate to. I also think he’s the kind of person who listens to everything his friends (though mostly Reynie let’s be honest) recommend, so his Spotify Wrapped would be a weird mix of everything from show tunes (thanks to Mr Benedict) to metal to hip-hop. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Sticky likes to listen to male manipulator music, but not because he’s actually like that, he just appreciates the music (plus some “cool” people at Boatwright recommended it to him). So The Smiths, Radiohead and dare I say Weezer would be on his playlists. I feel like Sticky is the type of person who reads/studies in complete silence, but for those moments when he wants some ambience I can totally see him pulling out some nice jazz records. Sticky likes to be organized, so he has playlists divided by genre and artist (though not so much the overall mood of the music).
Top artist: Orla Gartland
Top track: Back To The Old House - The Smiths
Kate
My headcanon is that most of the music Kate knows is from the circus where every night they’d get together and play on some janky DIY instruments and out-of-tune guitars (Kate would play a washboard or kazoo. argue with the wall). So when she finally gets the chance to listen to recorded music, she naturally gravitates towards what she recognizes. This ends up being a lot of classic rock like The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and of course Joan Jett & the Blackhearts as well as more folk-style musicians like Bob Dylan and The Mamas & The Papas. I can also see her and Milligan sitting together out on the farm and enjoying a Bob Dylan or Patsy Cline record together. Because of this, Kate doesn’t listen to a lot of newer music, but like Sticky, she’d be open to most genres and whatever her friends recommend. As a result, I think Kate would have the widest range of genres on her Spotify Wrapped. On the one hand, I feel like she’d be drawn to Florence + The Machine and Odie Leigh, but I can also picture her sitting in one of the apple trees at the farm blasting some The Cranberries or Green Day when she’s feeling extra angsty. Maybe even something more Soul/R&B like Al Green and Lauryn Hill? Despite this large variety, Kate would also be the type of person to have just one playlist titled “Kate’s Playlist” that contains like a thousand songs (it hasn’t been edited in four years and she skips most of the songs).
Top artist: The Rolling Stones
Top track: Crimson and Clover - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts,
Constance
Given Constance’s vocal distaste for rhyming poetry, I get the feeling that she would have an equally vocal distaste for music. She’d call it “grating noise for simpletons” or something, but Mr Benedict gets her a Spotify account anyways because he just knows. And indeed, when no one’s around, Constance will blast some aggressively juvenile pop and dance around her room, because ultimately, she’s still a child. I feel like she would also love The Oh Hellos (who don’t fit into the “aggressively juvenile pop”-category, but still) and their storytelling. We do learn that Constance does appreciate art, so I think an artist with a particularly striking voice like Leontyne Price or Luciano Pavarotti (both Opera singers) would move her to tears. Overall, however, I feel like Constance doesn’t listen to a whole lot of music and when she does she doesn’t pay much mind to the artist. She also refuses to have any playlists (except for the ones she’s created by accident).
Top artist: Honestly, who knows (in my heart of hearts i want to say Carly Rae Jepsen just to be chaotic)
Top track: Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos
Bonus! SQ (because i love my son)
Much like himself, SQ would like music that’s softer and sad as hell. The first to come to mind are Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Gregory Alan Isakov (and I know for a fact that SQ listens to Phoebe Bridgers and Boygenius). But I could also see artists like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Smiths with their more upbeat melancholia be added to his playlists (along with any song about having a complicated relationship with your father/parent). Apart from that one cursed scene in S2, we don’t see Curtain enjoying any music, but I can definitely see him making sure that SQ doesn’t listen to anything he deems “unsophisticated” or “vulgar” (so no Rage Against The Machine for SQ unfortunately). When Curtain and SQ do listen to music together, it’s often classical music when they’re sitting in silence together in Curtain’s office. Since SQ is a very creative person, I can see him being drawn to more experimental stuff like Björk, Radiohead or Kino.
Top artist: Sufjan Stevens
Top track: Should Have Known Better - Sufjan Stevens

Hey bestie! If you're still doing evans ships I'd love to have one 😚
For reference I'm 5'3 and my skin tone is literally the same exact shade of a Hershey's chocolate chip, I have braided hair and I'm plus sized.
I'm a cancer if that matters, my favorite color is pink, autumn is my favorite season and I love dressing cozy and baking and cooking for my friends and lovers.
My love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation, I've been told by many that I have a warm, loving aura.
I like to think that humor is my best quality and my favorite artists are Ethel Cain, Laufey, boy genius, Lucy Dacus, Leith Ross, & Noah Kahan.
I immediately thought of Franken!Kyle!!
Tumblr media
Hersheys chocolate chip 😭 that’s beautiful and Kyle would definitely agree. Just thinks you’re stunning.
He definitely seems like a soft color kinda dude. Baby blue and pink.
loves sweaters and comfy clothes and will sit in the kitchen and watch you cook and bake, because it’s always so yummy.
his love language is also physical touch. He isn’t great with words but can explain easier through physical touch, plus it’s very comforting for him.
Would feel so safe and warm around you. Loves to snuggle with you and just lay his head on your chest and listen to your heart beat to lull him to sleep.
wouldn’t quite understand humor, but as he learns and grows, he appreciates it and laughs. You have to explain it to him sometimes, but once he understands he repeats them throughout the day and laughs
Music music music!!! Kyle loves music as well. <3

Album Tag Game
I know someone tagged me in this cuz I have a note on my phone reminding me to do it but i cannot. find the tag. OH WELL doing it anyway
name six albums you've been listening to, plus one track from each that you're especially fond of:
Tumblr media
unreal unearth - hozier
abstract (psychopomp)
when i tell you this album made me unwell i mean it MADE ME UNWELL. i vividly remember the day it dropped because i had like a four hour drive and i just looped it the entire way and then didn't listen to anything except it for a week straight. andrew hozier byrne when are you free. can we talk. i promise i'm normal.
Tumblr media
punisher - phoebe bridgers
i know the end
i mean what the fuck. whoooo said you were allowed to do that phoebe. irreparable brain damage was done by this album. i know the end song of all time?????? yeah. nothing coherent to say except i am timestamp 5:08 of i know the end whenever i listen to it.
Tumblr media
evermore (deluxe edition) - taylor swift
dorothea
2020-21 was really peak taylor swift no I'm not taking questions. my favourite taylor swift album switches between folklore and evermore like a game of ping pong but i'm restricting myself to just one. ms swift likes to pretend she never made this album but i'm actually outside her house blasting it on full volume so she'll play dorothea when i'm at the eras tour. again - very normal about it.
Tumblr media
lungs - florence + the machine
rabbit heart (raise it up)
oh you mean mother??? you mean the woman who raised me????? florence welch is my cult leader i'm deeply obsessed with her and how every time she sings she sounds like she's summoning some kind of ancient deity. go girlboss i guess.
Tumblr media
songs - adrianne lenker
ingydar
adrianne lenker is single-handedly getting me through this university at this point. i listen to this album like three times a day don't question it.
Tumblr media
the record - boygenius
revolution 0
'you already mentioned phoebe bridgers' shhhhh. shut up. boygenius my loves. boygenius my most beloved. i do not actually have coherent thoughts about them except that i want to hold hands with lucy dacus. like that's my wife lowkey. that's all.
Tumblr media
pretty sure i've seen everyone get tagged already in this??? if not PLEASE feel free to do it - i love seeing everyone's responses, I'm absorbing music recs

the sad old fire gays playlist
bold = jeong jeong, italics = piandao, both = both
1. let this remain - alana henderson
meet the basic need in me then get up and be gone / take the heat, retreat and leave the room to carry on / so between me and you / let this remain / but you could be the only one i don’t regret (yet)
they start their relationship trying to convince themselves it's just some physical thing. it'd be easier that way, less complicated. but it's not.
i didn't intend this, but in my fic killer, jeong jeong all but quotes this song, telling piandao "you are the only part of that life I do not regret".
2. two birds - regina spektor
two birds on a wire / one tries to fly away / and the other / watches him close from that wire / he says he wants to as well / but he is a liar
one of them ran away from the fire nation, the other did not, despite having the same beliefs. i think after jeong jeong deserts, piandao considers following him, wants to follow him. but he never does. he's just a liar.
3. goodbye, my danish sweetheart - mitski
explained here
4. round we go - marika hackman
oh my god, what have i done? / left my hands above the flames
this ended up on here because in the second chapter of my fic beyond your darkness, piandao burns himself while staring into fire thinking of jeong jeong. this song is pretty opaque, but that imagery, plus the lines about "i'm inside my head / rolling around my skull like a flesh-colored marble" makes me feel like this song is about that exactly that situation - burning yourself while turning over a past relationship in your head. round you go.
5. i don't smoke - mitski
explained here
6. disclaim - thao & the get down stay down
i don't believe it's your destiny / to always chase my memory / how could it be insincere / to very clearly disappear
jeong jeong thinking about piandao post-desertion, hoping that he moves on with his life. i meant no harm to you, the song repeats.
there's also something very gender about a woman singing the line "i was once an honorable man". very jeong jeong's gender, specifically.
7. tactics - japanese breakfast
a love that has to / move a great distance from you / cross a sea, keep you from me
along the same theme as the previous - jeong jeong left piandao behind because he cared, didn't want to drag him down too.
shockingly, i'm pretty sure i wrote the peach memory in ghosts before i heard this song. then i just had to add it to the playlist.
8. burning house - cam
laid beside you and pulled you close / and the two of us went up in smoke
i heard this song on the radio during the three months i worked retail and i was like "that sounds like a dream jeong jeong would have about piandao". and then i added it to the playlist. love how the album cover does not match the vibe of the song at all.
9. as it was - hozier
tell me if somehow / some of it remained /how long you would wait for me / how long i've been away
one of the first songs i thought of as pianjeong - blorbo from my albums meets blorbo from my shows! a song about returning home to your lover after a draining and chaotic time away, apt for jeong jeong reuniting with piandao after being on the run for years. i also think the last lines -
and the cold cut as sharp as my baby / and the nights were as dark as my baby / half as beautiful too
fit piandao pretty well.
(that said, the main conflict in ghosts is that jeong jeong knows that everything can't be as it was.)
10. i will - mitski
explained here. i really tried to limit the amount of mitski songs on this playlist. i really did.
11. timefighter - lucy dacus
i fought time / it won in a landslide / i'm just as good as anybody / i'm just as bad as anybody
the weight of the years hangs on jeong jeong. but ultimately, it's healing to realize everyone has good and bad. the years have caught up to both of them, but it's brought wisdom.
12. mars - sleeping at last
we were young enough to sign / along the dotted line / now we're young enough to try / to build a better life
the former soldiers healing and building a better life after the war.
13. hot & heavy - lucy dacus
this song came into my notes app and plagiarized from the early drafts of ghosts. absolutely rude behavior from lucy. i demand financial compensation.
then again, maybe we were both writing about someone who goes back to the place they're from and reconnects with an ex-lover and both of them have changed so much and seeing this person again brings up so many old feelings and memories. also fire imagery. maybe that's it.
jokes aside, i can't pick just one lyric to sum up why this is on the playlist.
being back here makes me hot in the face / hot blood in my pulsing veins / heavy memories weighing on my brain
jeong jeong is super uncomfortable being back in the fire nation.
how could i deny a diamond in the rough?
piandao as an exceptional person from a lower-class background, piandao as a person jeong jeong loved in the miserable environment of the military.
you were always stronger than people suspected / underestimated and overprotected
piandao was underestimated as a nonbender - maybe not overprotected, but the point still stands.
when i went away it was the only option / couldn't trust myself to proceed with caution / the most that i could give to you was nothing at all
jeong jeong deserting the military bc he knew he'd snap if he stayed, not telling piandao because that kept him safer.
you were a secret to yourself / you couldn't keep from anyone else / now you're the biggest brightest flame / you are a fire that can't be tamed / you're better than ever but i knew you when / it's bittersweet to see you again
piandao has gone from the underestimated young soldier to a respected master. jeong jeong had always seen that potential in him even if he didn't see it himself. but given how jeong jeong thinks about firebending, calling him a bright flame that can't be tamed is also a bit of an insult, that he's become this respectable fire nation citizen. he's better than ever, but jeong jeong knew him way back when. it's bittersweet to see him again.
14. curses - the crane wives
every word i say is kindling / but the smoke clears when you're around
this song has so many key jeong jeong words - curse, fire, war. even has my personal jeong jeong word "ghosts". throw in "river" and you've got them all! it's almost TOO obvious.
15. killer - phoebe bridgers
can the killer in me / tame the fire in you?
our title track, as well as the title of my fic killer. despite all the destruction that they have done and witnessed, there is something waiting for them.
16. any human friend - marika hackman
i'll take you to the far side / where it won't be wrong
they get together after the war, in that faraway "place" where it's finally safe for them to be themselves. i put this as piandao's perspective because he's the one "made of stone", who maybe seemed cold and unfeeling for so many years because he had to hide. (jeong jeong may be repressed, but unfeeling is not the word for someone who yells that much). mostly, though, this song has such a warm golden energy. it's the slow fade-out on a sunset, the closing credits of the movie. the happy ending, in song form.

hey i don’t know those titles EXPLAIN
i feel like i am being held at gunpoint. for the record people, ella does know all these fics just not all of their titles. also i am gonna take this opportunity to explain the titles bc i want to. ok here we go.
the way you love me = exes fic (this entire fic concept was inspired by the way you love me by kelly flatley, a song that has less than 1000 streams that ella introduced me to. also my most listened song of all time on spotify. hehe. also the chapter titles will come from lyrics from this song but i won't reveal that yet.)
mike wheeler and the five steps to conquering homosexuality = byler but i'm a cheerleader au. (i am proud of this title bc ok maybe it's a little basic But it sounds very camp movie-esque which is very much the biac vibe + "conquering homosexuality" is like. wdym by conquering is he overcoming it or like.. getting really good at it. and that's very in line with the types of jokes in the movie. and obviously the movie is broken down into 5 sections for the 5 steps of the program, a format that i am following for the fic.)
are there still beautiful things = cleradin au. (this is a lyric from seven by taylor swift, my favorite lyric actually, and it sounds very whimsical and fantasy-y to me, the beautiful things being an enchanted forest and magical creatures etc. they will encounter in the fic. also that whole song is very miwi and very fantasy au to me. plus this fic is a memory loss fic and the lyric "and though i can't recall your face i still got love for you" will be Very Pertinent here.)
thumbs = the mike & lonnie fic based on tumbs by lucy dacus (working title. i might use another lyrics from the song we shall see)

it’s like the most average one but it still makes the cut for my playlist, it’s like the perfect one for a boring christmas party where you don’t want anyone to mumble “this girl ruined the song” and start a fight, sometimes it comes on and I don’t even notice until it’s halfway over but it’s still a solid cover
5. ashley tisdale
GOOD!! BUT sometimes when it comes on I associate it with candace flynn before I think sharpay (which would be my ideal first thought) but I love ashley like A LOT plus she has lots of sparkly sounds in the song so she wins (idk what she wins though)
4. taylor swift
taylor probably deserves a higher ranking really, actually I kinda feel bad put her this low but this is how it has to be, BUT points for baby taylor voice and little country music sounds, I’m a simple girl and I have a very happy reaction when a taylor song uses the banjo
3. danna paola
she was gonna be higher, but then I found lucy and the ranking switched up, but she gets ultra points for her vocals on the second verse, and like if we were going strictly off the vocals on the lyric “merry christmas I loved you and I meant it” then she would probably win
2. lucy dacus
I know I said earlier that she was first but I had to switch it but OH MY GOD this cover also wins (still don’t know what they’re all winning though) cause it’s ajdnaojdlqidpamsiajlsnksjwlsm akusoamsiajsomaisiwiksksssnjakskwkdkksskd im sure you understand what that means I really like this one
CARLY!!!
did you know that i’m in love with carly rae jepsen but like in a platonic way? I would die for her and I would die for her cover cause I think she’s very adorable and I want to own a bakery with her, also points for her sparkly sounds (they all kinda have sparkly sounds though) BUT HER’S HAS THE BEST SPARKLY SOUNDS also I love her

hellooo, it may just be that i was rereading pieces when "night shift" by lucy dacus was playing but it just feels like a heartbreakingly appropriate song for rosalie.
it feels like it captures a lot of the feelings that you conjured up with rose and astarion, especially after their... conversation in your latest chapter. i don't know if it fits the vibe of your wip playlist cuz its more somber but damn, some of the lines fit too well so i wanted to share it with you!
anyways, i already left a comment on the new chapter but i feel the need to add that holy fuck it was wonderful to have some honest communication even under those circumstances, especially since you capture dialogue so well. beautiful job, love!
Lol not to get my gay card revoked on tumblr.com but this is the first Lucy Dacus song I've listened to :') Thank you for sharing with me as the vibes are wonderful and paying attention to the lyrics was actually a very fun exercise for me.
Some of my favourite and most relevant parts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The second part is Avoidant Girlie behaviour, coupled with the fact that Astarion can now walk in daylight? Chef's kiss.)
Bonus points for this being both Rose/Astarion POV:
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! I love forcing characters to actually communicate their feelings and charm seemed like a rough but ideal solution to this particular problem in this particular story.
(Also just to explain myself I don't put song recs on the playlist not bc I don't like songs but I either have to add every song or where I only put the ones that fit the vibe and then it becomes a competition, plus I have... curation issues. By which I mean, I am a control freak and I like song playlists to be Exactly Perfect In My Brain. But I listen to every song and a few are on my On Repeat rn!)

boyGENIUS!!!!
Tumblr media
boygenius, a superstar trio of indie artists including phoebe bridgers, julien baker, and lucy dacus, recently released their debut album, and it is truly nothing short of genius. in a moment that was about as culturally significant to me as the signing of the declaration of independence, these three women utterly changed the course of my life and the lives of thousands of other melodramatic girlies. this lil post, despite being a healthy 3-ish weeks after the actual release of the record, will compile some of my standout thoughts on each track of the album. hope you enjoy! ;)
1: without you without them
one thing about me, i LOVE some boygenius harmonies. in a similar manner as my beloved favorite track from their 2018 EP, ketchum ID, without you without them provokes a deep sense of peace and emotion combined. “speak to me, until your history’s no mystery to me” is the cutest cleverest little lyric. the perfect opening track.
2: $20
0:01 seconds in, any seasoned boygenius fan immediately goes “julien!!!” her signature heavier guitar and drums sets her apart from the jump and creates the catchiest hook. plus the screaming at the end?? oh my god??? (that video of phoebe recording I KNOW!!!!! YOU HAVE!!!!! 20 DOLLARS!!!!!! has actually not left my head since i saw it)
3: emily i’m sorry
i will forever be unapologetically weak in the knees for phoebe bridgers. she captures so many emotions so beautifully in this, between loving someone so much it destroys you and feeling completely out of control of your life. i love the progression between “i can feel myself becoming someone only you could want” and “i can feel myself becoming somebody i’m not, i’m not” between the two choruses.
4: true blue
more songs about platonic love!!!! PLEASE!!!! this track is devastatingly adorable. “i can’t hide from you like i hide from myself,” is the perfect lyric to make you think of that friend who will tell you that you don’t have to say “its ok” when you’re miserable over something. the bridge also makes me feel like i’m floating. i love lucy!!!!
5: cool about it
WOW. unquestionably in the top three, immediately. i’m a sucker for a boygenius song where they all have equal verses (souvenier-esque) and this one HITS. i’ve seen so many different interpretations of this one, including but not limited to: 1: the feeling of knowing an old friendship is slowly drifting apart, 2: a heartbreak that you swallow and smile through for the other person, and 3: clinging to someone that you know is bad for you because you can’t imagine yourself without them. all of them are so fitting, and i find so much beauty in the open-endedness.
6: not strong enough
LUCY AT THE END. LITERALLY JUST. LUCY’S PART AT THE END.
makes me go actually crazy every time. they ate this one up. a depressing song in an upbeat major key melody is an incredible combination. sneaks up on ya.
7: revolution 0
this is such a genuinely beautiful song. another one where they just nailed the harmonies. “i used to think if i’d just close my eyes, i will disappear”  reminds me so much of “i used to think you could hear the ocean in a seashell, what a childish thing” in phoebe’s single “sidelines.” definitely a lie on the floor and ponder existence while tracing the cracks in your ceiling type jam.
8: leonard cohen
i love a short little song. and this is a fantastic one. “i am not an old man having an existential crisis at a buddhist monastery, writing horny poetry, but i agree” is incredibly boygenius-coded. their tendency towards the occasional silly little lyric is something i can always get behind. my favorite fact about this one is that the story at the beginning is 100% true-and that phoebe was the one driving the car.
9: satanist
as the text that my best friend sent to me at the release of the album reads, “satanist BANGS” and it’s true. satanist does in fact, bang. another distinct julien standout, it provides a sick little head-bangy intermission to all the introspective, staring-at-the-ceiling pondering. “will you be a nihilist with me? if nothing matters, man that’s a relief” has got to be the realest thing i’ve heard in a minute.
10: we’re in love
dunno if this song has too much of a tinge of sadness to be my first dance song at my wedding…..but i certainly want it to be. i’d have to claim this one as my favorite from the album. everything about it is just stunning, from the lyrics and the story they convey to the vocals and simple instrumental backing. the verse about finding each other in the next life actually made me tear up in the public record store where i first heard the album. “i can’t imagine you without the same smile in your eyes, there is something about you that i will always recognize” ARE YOU KIDDING?!! so heart-stoppingly beautiful.
11: anti-curse
i’d love to drive down an empty highway with this song playing. there’s something so magical about a song that has a dramatic build-up, and there’s nobody that does a dramatic build-up better than these three right here (shout out not strong enough again). the instrumental swells at “i guess i did alright considering” and “i’m swimmin back” feel like such a true release of emotion, you can’t help but feel it alongside the band.
12: letter to an old poet
INSANE. easily a standout track, between the parallel to the past “me and my dog,” from the band’s debut EP, to the gut-wrenching lyricism delivered in phoebe’s smooth vocals, it’s seriously unforgettable-especially for old fans of the band. “and i love you, i don’t know why, i just do” is a poignantly simple capture of a feeling we’ve all faced at one point or another. the combination of love, hurt, and rage is such an intriguing combination and draws the listener in from the first moment. also a BIG fan of “you don’t get to tell me to calm down.” remember to never let anyone invalidate how you feel, my friends. and also remember to…
STAY COOL!!!!!

Phoebe Bridgers. Julien Baker. Lucy Dacus. What happens when three of the most talented solo singer-songwriters of a generation get together? You get something disarmingly funny, haunting, queer, something sui generis. Plus the best love song playlist ever. Meet The Band— a.k.a. boygenius.
Tumblr media
From left: CHOPOVA LOWENA fringe denim jacket. PAOLINA RUSSO bodice mini dress and knit top. CHOPOVA LOWENA zip cardigan and fuzzy skirt; FALKE tights.
Nicolaia Rips: How are you guys? You’re all individually at home hanging?
Lucy Dacus: Phoebe and I both just got back from, what, five weeks of being away or more. I’m jet-lagged. I was sleepy at 7 p.m. and I had a friend come over and kind of push me until 10 p.m. so I wouldn’t fall asleep while the sun was out.
Nicolaia Rips: How’s tour?
Lucy Dacus: The tour, like, all of it has been awesome. Our next show is Boston. Right? Or is it New Haven? I don’t know. (Julien pops into the zoom, just the tip of her baseball hat as she slowly emerges into frame.)
Julien Baker: My phone died and then I just...Hi, I’m here now.
Nicolaia Rips: If boygenius was a family who’s the middle child, who’s the eldest?
Phoebe Bridgers: Am I the youngest?
LD: No!
JB: No. You’re not youngest! I’m youngest.
LD: Julien’s youngest.
PB: You also are literally the youngest.
LD: Is it boring to say that it’s just how the ages are? Me and Phoebe are both older sisters to younger brothers and Julian is an only child. I think you’re big sis Phoebe. Big brother. Big sis was weird.
PB: My brother calls me sis to give me the ick. He’s like, I love how they do it on TV. They’re always like, “what’s up, sis?” Who the fuck calls their sister that?
NR: The film [directed by Kristen Stewart]. The record. Can you talk about the finality of “The.” What other “The” would you want to do in the future?
LD: The amusement park, uh, the strip club...
JB: The musical!
PB: It’s cool because we wouldn’t do that in our solo work. I think it just highlights the specialness of the time. Like we’re setting out to make the boygenius things right now.
LD: It’s also acknowledging a bit of hype, which is fun because we’re members of the boygenius fandom ourselves. So, people asking for the record, we’re able to give them the record.
NR: What makes something a boygenius song versus a solo?
LD: At least for me, context changes what I write about, and how I write. So, we just decided to be each other’s context for a couple years. It’s not some big secret, we chose to do this, to devote space and time.
NR: Your music feels so vulnerable yet there’s always this play. How do you feel your senses of humor factor into your work?
PB: It’s silly. We kind of enable each other. I feel like there have been several times where I’m like, am I allowed to write this? And the boys were like, yeah, obviously.
NR: What’s on the essential boygenius book list? The Book Club?
LD: Myth of Sisyphus.
PB: Stop!
LD: What are books that we’ve all read? Like Carmen Maria Machado, both of her books. The Sympathizer, we all loved. Letters to a Young Poet.
JB: I’ve heard y’all reference a lot and it’s nice to feel like ideas, instead of slipping into like a landfill or whatever, get recycled to me. I don’t know, I just like hearing y’all talk about books that I haven’t read too.
PB: That’s my main experience. I’m always the one that did not read the thing. I read way more because of this band which is so tight.
JB: I feel like you’re always reading essays on some lane of art and I’m just like, dang, all I read was a graphic novel and Sartre again.
LD: Sartre again. Y’all have podcasts. I’m completely out for the podcast conversation.
JB: Phoebe got me into podcasts. I used to just be like, it’s not radio, I don’t understand it. All the podcasts I listen to are just things [Phoebe] told me to listen to —99 PI, Hidden Brain.
PB: I do not have the strength to have thoughts when I’m doing things.
NR: I was listening to My Favorite Murder a while ago and was like, wait a second. Is that Phoebe Bridgers??
PB: I felt so nervous. I think that’s the last time I had actual stage fright.
LD: Is that the one where you say, “yeah, me and my friend Lucy kissed” and then everyone freaked out?
PB: Now, no one could possibly get freaked out by us kissing. It’s just part of it. “I went to a Boygenius show and Julien and Phoebe or Lucy and Phoebe kissed.”
JB: There’s a picture of me and Lucy and my mom asked if it was the guitarist from Muna because I think she saw one picture of me and Joe [Maskin] kissing and thinks we’re dating. Mom, you’re on Twitter? Like she’s following me? I felt love.
Tumblr media
From left: S.S. Daley monogram tailored jacket. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER vintage top courtesy of Haut Archive. SIMONE ROCHA cotton stripe pointed collar shirt; JOHN LAWRENCE SULLIVAN wool stripe jacket.
NR: Who are your favorite unsung girl geniuses of history?
LD: Nick Drake’s mom, Molly Drake. She is an incredible poet and songwriter and pianist. They re-released a collection of her works recently. You can hear how Nick Drake was obviously inspired by her as her kid.
PB: Emily Bronte’s brother.
LD: We went to the Bronte mansion. Mansion. I just mixed up the Biltmore Mansion and the Bronte house because we also...
PB: We love to go to old places that people lived in.
LD: It’s like we’re trying to get haunted. We all showed up upset to the Bronte Museum and then in the first room they were like, “here’s the couch where Emily Bronte died of tuberculosis at age 30.” Now
whenever we’re all upset and it’s hard to get out of, we call it Brontitis. Emily and Anne had a brother named Branwell. Branwell Bronte who was a great artist. But he was underappreciated and wished he could be more like his sisters. (Phoebe has been roaming her house for the entire interview, white blonde hair streaming behind her, angles the camera down at a pug sitting alone on a large baroque couch.)
PB: Maxine Bridgers.
LD: I think Maxine’s pretty sung. She’s not unsung at all.
JB: Maxine’s sung.
NR: What were you about to say?
JB: Hilma af Klint. But obviously things come in tides of awareness. Something that’s unsung to me doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsung in fine visual art.
PB: She was unsung in her life.
JB: But that was a choice, right? She was like, don’t publish anything or show my work until fifty years after my death.
PB: So sick.
NR: Going back to this haunting thing. Have you ever been haunted?
LD: We’ve been talking about this. Unclear.
JB: I was haunted! I was haunted!
LD: Julien was haunted.
JB: I was haunted. It was...demon. I don’t think it was a ghost.
LD: I have witnessed haunting but personally, I’m a clean vessel.
JB: What the fuck. This [interview] is so...
PB: My dating life in my early fucking twenties for sure was haunted.
LD: Are we just calling abuse haunting now? Ok. Well, I was haunted when I was in my early twenties too. (They all laugh.)
PB: Born haunted, dude,
JB: Born haunted just took me by surprise.
LD: That’s generational trauma babe.
JB: I had an apartment with bad vibes.
LD: Julien had an apartment where someone was murdered and rolled up in a carpet and put in a closet.
PB: Wait, was that the apartment that I was in? Yo? OK. UM. (Immediate chattering over each other.)
LD: How have we not talked about this? Julien recently said that she was told [about the murder] upon moving in and was like, bet, I’ll just be here.
PB: That does not surprise me.
LD: And then all that shit went down and you didn’t move. I can’t believe it.
JB: Let me tell you how metaphorical this shit was. Basically, they [realtors] just painted some stuff a hip color of green and put a pool in and doubled the rent. And I was like, okay, I’ll mime being an adult and pay way too much money for this apartment in the right part of town, to be the right kind of person, with all my cool East Nashville friends or whatever. And it was just full of murder and history. I did not have a good time there and I was all alone. That place had bad vibes. Top to bottom.
LD: Bad vibes is the most, like, inane way you could say what was happening in that apartment.
Tumblr media
From left: CHOPOVA LOWENA dress. RAVE REVIEW fleece jacket; stylist's own BURBERRY vintage pants. SIMONE ROCHA nylon single breasted car coat; GUCCI shirt.
JB: Before I’d only ever lived in houses like on a yoga mat or with five other people who were in six different bands. Moving there and being like, nice a dishwasher, and it was this spot where somebody had been like, “I think there’s a murder” and the cops came and were like, no murder here. But there was! He was just rolled up in a carpet, and then the cops came back because of the smell and then they were like, oh, there was a murder. Anyway, that’s where I lived.
LD: You got way more info than you bargained for with that question.
NR: I don’t know how to transition here, wow. Do you feel like you’re optimists or pessimists?
LD: I’m an optimist.
NR: Didn’t sound very convincing.
LD: I’m the devil’s advocate for the best-case scenario. I don’t think it’s gonna be like that, but I might as well petition for it.
JB: I would like to say I am a present tense pessimist and a future optimist. I’m like, let’s not make light of how much it sucks right now. It does not help the situation to say, “it could always be worse” or to say, “it’s not that bad.” I’m an optimist when I’m with you guys. Like, this is a pretty sick day we’re living,
LD: Our whole Europe tour was awesome. And then we all had one terrible day.
PB: That is so true. I was like, this day isn’t hell, this is actually my usual self on tour. We had one day like that in our whole time together this year. (Phoebe cleans the crust out of her dog’s nose.)
NR: Are you cleaning your dog’s nose?
PB: She’s been with her grandma and her nose fold is so full of crust. I can’t believe it.
LD: I love her. I want her to come sneeze on me.
(Now Julien shows her dog who’s “camera shy.” Lucy sings, “I love you” to both dogs.)
NR: What’s your ultimate love song?
LD: I have a lot of answers. I Went To The Store One Day by Father John Misty. I think that’s a great song. There’s a compilation of love songs of Nina Simone. A lot of perfect love songs on that.
PB: For You by Laura Marling is a great song.
JB: I’m trying to think of an answer that isn’t Options by Pedro the Lion.
PB: That’s not a love song, dude.
LD: We’re not accepting that answer anymore.
JB: That’s 100% a love song.
LD: Don’t say that. I have a playlist called “Perfect Love Song”. Who Knows Where The Time Goes by Nina Simone. I Need Your Love So Bad by Irma Thomas. Dance Song by Dijon. P.S. I Love You by Billie Holiday. I Love You Always Forever, Donna Lewis. Bless the Telephone, Serpentwithfeet does a great cover.
Tumblr media
From top: S.S. DALEY monogram tailored jacket and pleated skirt. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER vintage top courtesy of Haut Archive. SIMONE ROCHA cotton stripe pointed collar shirt; JOHN LAWRENCE SULLIVAN wool stripe jacket.
NR: Are you specific with playlist names?
LD: No, I’ll make the playlist name and then I’ll wait for the songs.
PB: I agree and then I’m curating forever.
LD: Never finished, always growing. It’s more of a catalog or an archive than a playlist that I would send to somebody. It’s a research tool.
JB: I have a playlist called “Queerly Specific” that’s all about coming out from a place of being in love. All songs about that. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. The one where he kisses his friend.
PB: My mom banned it from the house. She was like do not play the cancer song ever again.
LD: Reservations by Wilco. Modern Romance by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
JB: Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod by The Mountain Goats. Do you know that tune?
PB: No.
JB: Oh, ok. It’s a good one. They have a lot of good love songs because they’re like little vignettes of like living with a person and all the little intricate weirdo shit they do, which is what I ultimately think comprises a lot of love. Just checking out somebody’s weirdo shit.
(As we sign off, Phoebe nods, “Bye, Boys.”)

Okay Lucy Dacus fans, I would like some absolutely heartbreaking songs and specifically from her. I'm a plus size girl so anything along the lines of I Don't Want To Be Funny Anymore and Brando
(I will also accept other songs that will kill me in a different way but I'm really feeling Lucy Dacus recently)

Two part question:
1) which character do you think is more night shift by lucy dacus coded, heathcliff or cathy (og)
and
2) why
write 250 words min on it and include a minimum of 2 citations from Wuthering Heights 😼
its so obviously heathcliff. he does everything at night. When Heathcliff first came to wuthering heights in chapter 4 it was nighttime, when he left the house after hearing cather talk shit in chapter 9 nelly was to prepare supper, an evening meal. in chapter 10 nelly describes a "mellow evening in september" when heathcliff reappears to meet cathy. heathcliff dies in the night!!
he was always on that night shift without a doubt.
plus cathy would probs never go anywhere at night and i personally feel like the book was written to pitty cathy and that heathcliff was evil but if cathy had just been nice and not pretentious he would have been so normal
