A Turn of Fate

(This is a personal take on @jsab-fujii‘s Swap AU for PMD 2. Spoilers for that BTW.)

The news of what had happened traveled through treasure town quickly. The capture of the despicable criminal Violet had finally happened. Leo had successfully enacted his plan, and now, her mouth tied shut and her paws chained together in cuffs, she was being escorted through treasure town by Leo and two of his guards. Pokémon watched with awe as he walked towards town square.

The entirety of Skuntanks Guild had gathered, the dimensional hole that had been opened back to the future guarded closely by Metagross and the rest of his crew. Plenty of the town's pokémon had gathered. Even the three legendary beasts, the ones who guarded the time gears, had come to see Violet finally be sent back to the future.

Murmurs ran through the crowd as they walked, the Luxray in the back standing tall, and the Ninetales surrounded by two guards, a Marowak and a Growlithe, who watched her closely, keeping her in check. Violet glared at people as they stared at her, the piercing red eyes were enough to make anyone look away.

“Th-that’s…” Drowsee stuttered as Violet stared him down for a second.

“That’s Violet?” One of the Kecleon brothers asked.

“She sure looks evil that’s for sure.” Manectric quietly added.

The talking continued until Leo and Violet both stood near the portal, and Leo's voice called over the crowd for their attention. “Everyone! I’m thankful to be able to stand before you today with this wonderful news. After all our efforts, Violet has finally been captured!”

Cheers rang through the crowd, overjoyed that their time was safe now. That finally the time gear thief had been captured. This crowd included the newest recruits, Treecko and Duskull. The two joined the cheering, or at least Duskull did. Treecko however couldn’t shake the strange feeling that something bad was going to happen.

Leo continued his speech as the cheering slowed. “Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of each and every one of you. I mean it when I say I can not thank you enough for the opportunity you all have given me!” He said, waiting for silence again before continuing.

“I don’t know why Violet would try to steal such a thing. How she tricked me into following her for a while is another mystery I don’t have the answer to. However, I will use this opportunity to repair the damage we have done, now that our future is safe!” He said, his expression growing sad then hopeful. It was at this point that the group heard the muffled angry yells from Violet.

Her muzzle made it impossible for her to speak, though her anger and fear were clear on her face, as her eyes darted around the crowd, though they paid little mind as Leo spoke again. “Sadly though, this will be goodbye for a while. I will be going to the future for a while, in order to try and help her with the madness that caused all this.”

“Oh right,” Duskull said to Treecko, “I almost forgot that she went mad. I still can’t believe Leo had to go through losing his friend like that.” Treecko recalled the story well. Leo had made friends with a Vulpix from the future. She was trying to learn as much as she could about time and he helped her. One day though, her research drove her mad, causing her to steal one of the time gears, planning to collect them all. It was then that Leo had set out to stop her, no matter what.

Leo had continued to speak, a sad farewell given. He ensured the time gears would continue to be guarded by the legendary beasts, and thanked everyone once more. After a bit though, he noticed Violet staring at the grass and ghost type duo with recognition and quickly carried on with what needed to be done.

Everyone watched as he gave an order to the guards and they dragged Violet through the portal, as she kicked and tried to yell, looking into the crowd pleadingly. No one offered help, and in a moment she and the two guards were gone. “Well,” Leo said, “This is farewell for now I’m afraid.” He stepped towards the portal before stopping.

“Actually wait, I completely forgot.” He turned around. “Treecko, Duskull. I wanted to thank you.” The two were caught off guard though as Leo beckoned them they stepped forward. Leo continued. “I really could not have done this without you, thank you.”

“It’s been an honor, Leo.” Treecko answered. Duskull nodded, “Truly, we were glad to work with you, if only for a short time.” Leo smiled then his face turned slightly sad.

“Well, now this is just sad… I have an idea. I would like to give you a gift and perhaps train you more. What if you were to join me in the future for a while? If that is okay with your guildmaster. I promise, I will return them unharmed.”

The two were caught off guard by the offer looking at Skuntank. After a moment of thought, he laughed. “Chaw haw haw, well, as long as it won’t cause problems and the two want to.”

The Treecko smiled joyfully with excitement, “A chance to see the future and train with you more? Duskull, we have to do this!” Duskull was anxious, but seeing his best friend's excitement, and with an opportunity like this he couldn’t refuse. “Alright, we can follow. Just promise me we’ll be back home when we want to go back.”

“Of course,” Leo nodded. “You have my word.”

With that, the three waved goodbye, and in a single instant, they were gone.

Duskull was awoken by a paw shaking him, and as he looked up he saw Treecko who was standing next to the Ninetales, who was now unmuzzled. He shot up in surprise and fear. The Ninetales spoke calmly and gently to him.

“Please relax. I am not your enemy,” she said. The Duskull looked around the room they were in confused. The stone walls and floor were a deep gray color, and the only visible exit was through a door of iron bars. He floated around confused, looking at the jail cell that held them. “What happened? Where are we?” He asked, concerned.

“I’m afraid you both have been lied to by Leo.” She said, and as if she had summoned him, they saw Leo approach the bars from the other side.

“I’m deeply sorry to you three. I lied quite a lot.”

“What do you mean?” Duskull asked, anxiety rising by the second.

“I mean that, in truth, I can’t send you back.” He looked down, clearly ashamed of what he was doing to them.

“Why not? You promised we could!” Fear filled him as he began to understand what was going to happen. “You aren’t going to keep us here forever, right?”

“He is.” Violet answered, staring at Leo through the bars angrily, the anger causing Leo to sink, unable to meet her gaze. “You see, time itself is breaking. You’ve seen the damage it has done. Soon the whole world will look like that. I was trying to prevent that. If I could bring the time gears to temporal tower, everything would be fixed. Dialga would be able to fix time.”

Treecko spoke up but was interrupted by Leo. “When that happens though, everything from this future would disappear. Including you two and Violet. I couldn’t let that happen. Violet is the only good thing I had. So I had to stop her, and you, from ever getting to the time gears.”

Treecko and Duskull stared at Leo with a betrayed look. “But what about us? You’re just going to let us rot here?” Duskull asked as he grabbed the bars. Leo turned around, unable to bear seeing how his only friends were now looking at him.

“I’m so sorry.” he said as he walked away, two guards taking their place at the door, “I hope that someday you can forgive me.” He finished as he walked away.

“Leo! Come back!” Duskull shouted fearfully. “You can’t leave us here!” Leo just kept walking. This was for their own good after all. He was saving them. Right?

•Favourite thing about them

How their character changes as the story progresses. They went from a wimp and a scaredy-cat (sorry partner) to someone who was willing to take down an enraged god. Being able to see them grow up and become better in real time was just incredibly touching to me.

Honourable mentions to them being a ball of love and anxiety. I will kill if anyone even slanders them /lh.

•Least favourite thing about them

Something about the way they spoke in the game just felt....off. Looking back, it was most likely just how the game was structured. Its a problem with most characters but Partner got hit the worse imo.

•Favourite line

"To me..you're more important than anything else" has been imprinted in my mind :')

Bidoof and Sunflora, as well as Celebi. Bidoof is Partner's emotional support and closest confidant outside of Hero (on part with future crew), helping them as best as he can, whenever he can. Meanwhile, Sunflora and Celebi are basically the 'older sister' to partner, but while Celebi is more teasing and insightful, utilising her wisdom, Sunflora is more playful and chill, playing games, talking about stuff (though its mostly gossip) and the like.

• OTP

Heropartner, baby! They're dialouge is pratically yelling that theres more to these two than just 'friends'

Anyone outside Hero, really. I'm open to interpretations most of the time, but heropartner is more my jam.

• Random hc

They are INSANELY strong. If they went all out, they could solo the final exam all by themselves (at the cost of getting fatigued by the end of it). Ofc, they don't really believe that, instead viewing themself as rather weak, so they opt for a more methodical approach to 'make up for it'.

• Unpopular opinion

They're no longer a wimp by the end of the game, and is actually quite confident. They do get anxious sometimes, and they're still quite shy when talking to others, but if needed, they would be a great leader.

• Song I associate with them

I'm gonna cheat a bit here and take a song that I associate with both Hero and Partner, since seeing one usually makes me think of the other.

I've been listening to this even before pmd, but after that game, this song has slowly but surely turned to a song about hero and partner (especially near the end).

• Favourite picture

i love what an absolute fucking freak of a ship the uss discovery is.

it was built as a science vessel but got turned into a battleship. its an ancient relic but also the most important ship in the fleet. it flies using mushroom power. it travelled a thousand years into the future. the ship's computer is sentient and has her own distinct personality. in one episode she gets sensory overload and has to be calmed down by the crew. also everyone on board is mentally ill.

1. Trying to come up with nicknames and a team name revolving around a certain them for my Pokemon

2. The guild crew. I love the guild crew so much 

3. The catchphrases. I really think the catchphrases have made these Pokemon more memorable. Like Wigglytuff’s yoomtah, or Bidoof’s yup yup, and Sunflora’s valley girl accent 

4. That feeling when you want to throttle Chatot and Loudred but you love them anyway 

5. The guild apprentices supporting each other

6. Trying to recruit every single Pokemon 

7. How adorable it is when the game hypes up the expedition and how only a select few can go only for Wigglytuff to just place every single person on the list. And Wigglytuff’s reasoning is “It’s more fun to have friends along!”

How about pmd Celebi for the character ask game?

(this'll be an interesting one)

• Favourite thing about the character

Definitely has to be her playful and cheery attitude, despite the horror of the situation she's in. Even when she knows she will dissapear, she still keeps a smile on her face.

• Least favourite thing about the character

Theres not enough stuff about her. Compared to Grovyle and Dusknoir, her personality and screen time falls incredibly short, imo. Headcanons and fanon fixes these issues, but man, imagine if she stuck around longer.

• Favourite line

Her first few lines of dialouge, though weirdly its "How uncouth!" that sticks the most. It sounds funny, like she is trying to sound annoyed while being polite

• broTP

Hero and Partner. They would have sibling dynamic imo, with Celebi being the older sister who occasionally teases the two.

• OTP

Grovyle and Dusknoir. Futuretrioshipping is peak (Though she would get a proper relationship with Dusknoir first before going for the triangle relationship)

• notp

Celebi has her eyes on her husbands and no one else

• Random hc

She's the most level-headed and sane among the future crew, but condones doing/lets slide stupid stuff cuz she likes it, which makes dusknoir look like the normal one

• Unpopular opinion

this probably counts, but she absolutely hates Dusknoir, at least at first. She slowly goes through a hater to friend to lovers arc with dusknoir, but theres still a sliver of skepticism with him.

• Song I associate with them

....nothing lol. I guess any song about life and the small things in it.

We start the episode with an all-NYC, all-uppercase collaboration from the "We Mean Business" LP, the seventh in EPMD's industrially-titled discography. A nod to LL on the hook, stick-up business over an Erick Sermon beat (of course), with KRS playing clean-up man flawlessly. Favourite part of the verse - real 'G's do indeed want to stay at home and read the paper.

Jay Dee : Another Batch - 11

One of a bunch of late-90s Dilla beats that got leaked onto the internet back in the day, this one smacks along with a bassline that comes through like a funky duck! I don't know if anyone ever rhymed on this, but I can imagine someone like De La doing great things with it.

Chuck D ft. Jahi : BOT

I don't know if it was intentional, but this track seems to call back to two tracks from the legendary "...Nation of Millions..." album; "She Watch Channel Zero?" ("she looking at the screen more than talking to me") and also "Night of the Living Baseheads" ("battery on low, look like fiends with a Jones"). Chuck D might have been one of the very first in Hip-Hop to catch onto the Internet, but the elder statesman sees the BS it's brought us as well! He combines here with the lead MC in the group known as "PE 2.0" to get it all off his chest, and he's got plenty more to say on the new "Celebration Of Ignorance" album.

Black Thought : 9th vs. Thought

No-one can accuse Black Thought of not being a team player, with it taking until 2018 before we saw a solo release from him, the "Streams of Thought Vol.1" EP. 9th Wonder was the producer for the project, and on this track he gets headline billing. Fans of top-flight lyricism are in for a treat here, as the MC of choice for many MCs shows his skill level in a major way.

Boot Camp Clik : World Wide

Serious track from the Brooklyn stalwarts, uniting on 2006's "The Last Stand". I absolutely love General Steele's opening verse, from which this month's epigram is taken, and then it's followed with the late, great Sean P just thugging it all the way out on the second verse! They go out of the immediate crew for production, tapping up Large Professor for a head-nodding beat that easily could have made for a fire single. Not the best-known tune maybe, but a tune that is big by nature!

Big L : Don't Front (Freestyle)

Short and powerful like a shot of rum, this is a concise taste of Big L's legendary freestyle aggression over a smooth 90s beat from Diamond's "You Can't Front". 

Slum Village : Go Ladies (Instrumental)

One of my favourite Dilla beats easily, as heard on the "Fantastic, Vol.2" album, flipping a well-known 80s soul sample and somehow making it even better than you could have imagined. It's only when you listen back to what else was coming out around that time you can hear how much of a shock to the system a laid-back groove like this was.

Donnie : Cloud 9 (Spinna Mix)

If you enjoy soulful music, Donnie's 2002 debut "The Colored Section" should definitely be in your collection. "Cloud 9" was one of the standouts, and DJ Spinna puts some extra bump into it on this remix, which is on a nice 12" release. His bass style is so distinctive, and with so much of the beat being in the lower frequency range, it leaves plenty of room for Donnie's masterful vocals!

Foreign Exchange : Hustle, Hustle

There are plenty of great tracks on "Connected", the debut Foreign Exchange album, and I was sure I'd already played this - glad to find out I hadn't, as it was the perfect fit for this slot! Nicolay's beat is smooth on that kind of early-2000s, neo-soulish vibe, and then you have lyrical treats coming from every angle. Quartermaine and C.A.L.I.B.E.R spit bars about trying to get ahead in the world, and Phonte comes in beautifully on the hook, in a fairly early demonstration of his singing talent. I don't blame you if you find yourself humming this one on the way to work.

Kev Brown : Hold Fast

One of the great bassline masters in Hip-Hop, Kev Brown certainly put Landover (MD) on the map with his top-quality "I Do What I Do" album. He's just as solid on the mic, and takes the reins alone on this track from the second half of the LP. Scratches are credited to DJ PMD, who is not Parrish Smith, but in fact Peter Rosenberg (who hails from the same area) under his original DJ name!

Jermaine Dupri ft. Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and R.O.C : Protectors of 1472

Unless there's some other, non-publicised significance to the number 1472, the "Life In 1472" album has one of the most contrived titles of all time! I don't actually have the album, but this DJ Premier-produced cut is on a compilation of his rarer/lesser-known cuts. I cut this one fairly short, as I think you get the best of it in a compact dose - the last verse is by far the longest, but Snoop towards the front is the clear headliner.

J Dilla : Won't Do (Instrumental)

Classic Dilla from towards the end, based around the "Footsteps In The Dark" drums, with fragments of the vocal yelling out for help along the way. The vocal version is on "The Shining" LP, but for this instrumental, you may need to pick up the 7" boxset of the album (or the MP3 version), which contains instrumentals for every track!

Sadat X ft. Timmy Hunter : Neva

The three-bar loop makes mixing a bit tricky, but I really wanted to play this one! Sadat looks back over his life and career, and celebrates his own effort and self-belief - justifiably so. Diamond D provides the beat, as he does all the way through the "Sum Of A Man" album. It's been a long road since that first LP with Brand Nubian, but Sadat is still travelling it, and for that we should be thankful :)

Dabrye ft. Jay Dee and Phat Kat : Game Over

That beat will definitely do things on a big sound system. Sparse, menacing, insistent. Ann Arbor's Dabrye takes no prisoners on the production, and then pulls in his fellow Michiganders Jay Dee and Phat Kat, who just spit raw Detroit flames in the space the beat leaves! The 2006 "Two/Three" album is one for anyone who likes the more angular, awkward, and aggressive style of production.

Clear Soul Forces : Continue?

I've been saving the combination of this and "Game Over" for ages :) CSF's 2013 "Gold PP7s" is an essential album for anyone who thinks they don't make MCs like they used to - it should give you faith for the future! I can't even keep up with all the gaming, comic, and anime references that they just firehose you with, but the spirit is undeniable. Ilajide's videogame-styled beat bumps hard, and overall this is just one of those tracks I can't see any reason for anyone not to love!

C2C ft. Tigerstyle, Netik, Rafik, Vajra, Kentaro : Le Banquet

Here we have an all-star lineup of scratch DJs, liquefying their crossfaders one after another as the featured instrumentalists on this track from the "Tetra" album. If you listen closely, there are actually some quotes from "Game Over" in the mix - they sound like vocoded re-records, but they could well be heavily-manipulated samples...

J Dilla : Dillatronic 09

One more Dilla instrumental as we come towards the end, this time taken from the "Dillatronic" collection of beats, a posthumous collection of 41 pieces - many very short - from the MPC of the man himself.

Noreaga ft. Nature, Big Pun, Cam'ron, Jadakiss, and Styles P : Banned From TV

Late 90s thug styles, and the kind of triumphant sound that either had to start or finish the episode. Nature was the original guest on here, but while almost everyone else was invited on, Big Pun bullied his way onto the track! While everybody comes off, the true gems on this tune are towards the front - Nature's memorable opening line, and Pun's devastating verse. The Swizz Beatz production is a perfect snapshot of the keyboard-based beats of the era - the "horns" should be corny, but somehow they work in context, and the kick/basstone combo bangs! Classic Berra-ism from Nore on the last verse too - if it's with tomato juice, then it can't be Hennessy straight...

If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like.
