Pokémon BW Rival Destinies: Wrath of the Legends (2013) Comic Storybook Scans
The second book (here is a link to the first!) is titled "Wrath of the Legends", and is adapted from parts one and two of the episode "Stopping the Rage of Legends!" This book is about Ash and crew going to the Island of Legends, where they get caught up in a battle between the Forces of Nature.
Tumblr media
Ash tries to battle Clay for the Driftveil gym badge, but instead is given a fetch quest to refill the revival herb stock at the gym.
Tumblr media
They set out for Milos island and meet a guy named Lewis, who says the revival herbs are drying out and the grass Pokémon of Milos island are falling ill.
Tumblr media
They learn that the island has a legend involving the revival herbs and the legendary Pokémon Landorus, Thundurus, and Tornadus.
The crew attempt to summon Landorus, who is the peacekeeper of the three, and instead Tornadus shows up.
Tumblr media
Tornadus is here and it is not happy. Apparently an obelisk that protects the island from Tornadus and Thundurus has been destroyed. Thundurus also shows up, and it too, is not happy.
Tumblr media
And of course, these two are both not happy at all to see each other, thus making them each more unhappy. Quite the unhappy bunch we have here.
Tumblr media
Turns out Team Rocket is behind the destroyed obelisks, and all is going according to keikaku for them. And yes, I'm putting this panel out of sequence because it literally says "according to Team Rocket's evil plan…".
All according to keikaku.
Tumblr media
The gang try to fight the feuding legendary Pokémon to no avail.
For some reason, Lewis is sure Landorus will show up if it is summoned by a shrine maiden. He just decides to appoint Iris as a shrine maiden…I guess because she is a girl?
Tumblr media
Apparently any girl dressed up in shrine maiden clothing will work.
Tumblr media
You look great, sweetie! Also just love how Iris looks like she is indoors while the guys reacting to her are outside? Lewis, it already looks like you are back at the shrine. Also love Ash's singular "Wow!" and Cilan's dead open mouth stare.
Iris does look cute in her shrine maiden outfit. Here are a couple more pics of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm a sucker for characters getting interesting alternative outfits for plot.
So the gang summon Landorus - Pokémon battles and Team Rocket shenanigans ensue. All that's really important is that the gang defeat Team Rocket, save the legendary Pokémon, and Landorus stops the fighting between Thundurus and Tornadus.
Now I'm going to share some panels of that are meant to be very serious, but are just downright (Darius) hilarious to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love when there is supposed to be a serious moment between powerful Pokémon and they aren't saying anything besides their names! It's so comical, I love it.
They have such a way with words.
The legendary Pokémon calm down and work together to give life back to the island. The revival herbs and grass Pokémon flourish and heal from their illness while Ash and gang continue on their journey.
And yeah! That's basically it for this book.
I did forget to mention Lewis has a partner Pokémon, Gothorita. Just like Palpitoad in Book #1, Gothorita steals the show for me with her expressions.

That's all I have for now, it was quite fun going through these books. My Pokémon anime experience ends with Pokémon Advance, which took place in Generation 3. I enjoyed revisiting the anime art style!
I'm not sure if there are more books in this series, as I only found these two (link again to the first one!) at the store.
As always, you can read the whole book(s) and view higher quality scans on my Internet Archive account.
Thanks for reading!

I need to share something very important with everyone. The other day my brother picked me up from therapy and we were going to visit our grandparents. On the way, I decided to show him my favourite vault track from Speak Now Taylor's Version (the latest re-recording by Taylor), because I'm annoying and I can't shut up. That vault track is Electric Touch, featuring Fall Out Boy.
I showed him the song. And he told me "it kinda sounds like the Black and White opening song". I asked him "the first one?" and he said "no, the second one".
The Rival Destinies opening.
And he was completely right. I couldn't believe how I hadn't noticed that before, since these are some of my favourite things in life, Taylor Swift and Best Wishes!!!
Listen to them by yourself. The chorus of both songs are extremely similar, especially the instrumental.
Best Wishes: Rival Destinies opening
Electric Touch - Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy
Electric Touch (Instrumental)
BW Rival Destinies (Instrumental)
I am so extremely excited, happy, drowning in nostalgia. In my mom's house, in my old room, there's still the lyrics of the BW song written on the ceiling. I wrote that when I was a kid. And I've been listening to Taylor since I was so little too. So, realizing this is very important and incredible to me. It's like, two things I love are connected and the fact that this was my favorite vault song even before noticing the similarities!
Thank you for reading :')

Not people fangirling over Ash when he's in Alola that's so cute.
AND TEAM ROCKET WORRYING ABOUT MARINIE AND MIMIKYU
I can't handle this series. Callbacks to older stuff is the number one way to get to my heart and we just had Dawn last episode as well. Journeys is so cute.
Also for the record I'm on Master Journeys part 2 episode 28. I've already recently made my way thru Black and White and Rival destinies. Adventures in Unova and Beyond weren't on prime so imma have to watch it thru other totally definitely legal means later on. So instead I've got thru Journeys and half of Master Journeys. I'm on a quest to watch all of the pokemon anime.
I've already seen most of Indigo League, the sinnoh stuff, and Sun and Moon in the past. I rewatched BW first as it was my fav as a kid. I've also seen bits and pieces of the other series throughout my life as well.
So I guess I'll be giving updates on random stuff from the pokemon anime on here as well as i make my way through it. It probably won't be super often, just ad i finish a series or see something really cute.

Okay so I’ve been in a big Pokemon (specifically Mystery Dungeon) mood so I’ve been listening to the Pokemon anime OPs and fuck it I wanna talk about each one and give my silly little thoughts. They’re in order of release just in case you don’t recognize the names.
Indigo League: Bro it’s fucking Indigo League that shit’s classic for a reason. It hasn’t aged a DAY it goes hard and if you say otherwise we literally cannot be friends anymore I’m sorry. Also it has an extended version which is more of the same vibe but like... It’s like getting more good food. Same flavor but MORE. Orange Island: Honestly underrated in my opinion. It kinda gives off a celebratory vibe? Like everyone ate up Indigo League so much that the Orange Island OP is just the team cheering themselves on. Feels very grand and epic in a way. I like it! Johto Journeys: Bruhhhhhh this song is so good. Not my favorite but GOD it’s up there. It has just such a positive energy and I can’t help but just STIM the life out of me when I hear this. It also leans back on the motif of “Gotta catch ‘em all!” the first OP had so I think that’s just kinda cute.  Johto League Champions: THIS SONG IS PEAK HOLY SHIT THE FUCKING INTRO THING I DUNNO ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC SO I DUNNO THE WORD FOR IT BUT GOD THIS IS LITERALLY HYPE CONDENSED INTO A FUCKING MP4 FILE THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE??? Master Quest: This has a mix of being peak hype, sounding like the cheesiest and corniest shit, and also being the intro song of my favorite Pokemon movie. It’s so good! Not as good at invoking the emotions like Johto League but it’s close! Advanced: This kinda has a really good vibe. It feels like the series is growing with it’s audience a bit and is trying really hard to be “cool” and is honestly succeeding really well. I appreciate the vibes behind this. Also “There’s a hero buried deep inside” I know they mean emotionally but my brain can’t help but go “Bro dig him out??? Can he breathe???” Advanced Challenge: Hmmm, I like it allot. It does lean into a cool “epic” aesthetic. But I don’t have any thoughts past that? It’s just good. lol Advanced Battle: BRO HOLY SHIT, THE ONLY TRUE WAY TO LISTEN TO THIS IS MAX VOLUME! IT’S SO GOOD okay okay no but for real though godddd this is peak Pokemon OP! I have no fucking real thoughts just LISTEN TO IT NOW I DEMAND YOU Battle Frontier: This is pretty good, I do find the lyrics “If you’re strong, you’ll survive, and you’ll keep your dreams alive!” and “It’s the master plan!” kinda... Hello??? Is this weird or am I overly analyzing it? Probably both. lol Diamond and Pearl: I may have not found this season interesting but the second I heard this OP I was READY for PEAK. This song has such a POWERFUL energy that felt like I was about to FIGHT GOD DP Battle Dimension: Ehh, I’m very mixed on this. Some parts feel like a theme you’d hear during a fun adventure (and the focus on the friendship of the cast was nice) but it also lacks a real energy I enjoy from the Pokemon OPs.  DP Galactic Battles: This song genuinely sounds like the end of the series. Like a beautiful swansong! Almost as if they wanted Pokemon to end with a beautiful send off. Besides that it’s genuinely fantastic and I come back to Galactic Battles’ OP allot! Sinnoh League Victors: I’m gonna be honest it’s like... Okay? It’s kinda middling at best. It sure exists you know?  Black & White: The time I hopped back onto the Pokemon anime since it was back to airing on Cartoon Network! I like this one! The start is a bit too slow for my tastes since I prefer the hype but hey when it gets there it really gets there! BW Rival Destinies: I dropped off the show again during this time. It’s pretty alright, I prefer the Black & White OP though, this feels like it doesn’t have the same energy as the previous one. It’s focus on the friendship aspects does add a bit though! BW Adventures in Unova: It sure exists. It takes so long to really get to the punchy parts of the Pokemon aesthetics. I do like it’s focus on the fact that Ash has come so far and stuff. Overall I don’t really care for it.  XY: After dropping off I came back for XY and honestly after so long after Indigo League hearing them essentially come back to that original theme with a twist was amazing! This OP goes hard and high-key so did this season. I recommend XY allot! XY Kalos Quest: It takes so much build up to the good stuff BUT GOD IS THE WAIT WORTH IT! I THINK THIS IS MY FAVORITE OUT OF EVERY OP SERIOUSLY IT’S SO GOOD! I cannot recommend listening to this enough, it’s full of so much life and energy!  XYZ: Again, dropped the show. So I have no nostalgia for this. All in all though I kinda like it. Not enough to sing it’s praises from the rooftops but enough to give it a listen every once in a while. It’s mostly just not my vibe.  Sun & Moon: IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT SHITTY BEACHSIDE TRACK FROM SONIC LOST WORLD IT INCITES ANGER AND HATRED IN MY HEART Sun & Moon Ultra Adventures: This sounds like the kind of song someone would blast out their car with the windows down and make me wanna throw a rock through their window, pass. Sun & Moon Ultra Legends: Better than the previous two OPs so... Good? Journeys The Series: Woo, back to the kind of energy I come to Pokemon OPs for!!! I have yet to watch Journeys but boy howdy this is a nice bouncy vibe!  Master Journeys: Oh shit sorry I accidentally put on my Hatsune Miku music oops (not bad but... Not the vibe I want?) Ultimate Journeys: Way different vibes from basically all the other OPs but honestly I kinda vibe with this. Not what I expect but still something fitting.  I wrote all these in a single listening session AS I WAS LISTENING TO THEM so uhhhhhhhhh hope you enjoyed? (Maybe I’ll make a tier list of them? Who knows.)

I feel silly asking this but on the list can you explain what series are what? I don’t understand abbreviations very well and the site I use has the pokeani separated by series
yes! in english they give each season a name. in japanese they just stick with one title for the whole series, so the abbreviations come from the japanese titles.
EP/The Original Series/OS: indigo league, orange islands, johto journeys, johto league champions, & master quest.
AG/Advanced Generation/Ruby and Sapphire: advanced, advanced challenge, advanced battle, battle frontier.
DP/Diamond and Pearl: diamond and pearl, battle dimension, galactic battles, sinnoh league victors
BW/Best Wishes/Black and White: black & white, rival destinies, adventures in unova (and beyond)
XY: xy, kalos quest, xyz
SM/Sun & Moon: sun & moon, ultra adventures, ultra legends
SS/NS/PM/PM2019/PJ/Pocket Monsters 2019/Pokemon Journeys: the name of this series is a nightmare and no one can agree on it. I use what bulbapedia uses, which is “ss.” the english title is Pokemon Journeys. It’s season 23.
the abbreviations & numbers that follow them are just universal ways the pokeani fandom can talk about an episode across sub and dub. we dont use season markers like most fandoms will go s13e06 but we just tag the series and then the episode in that series. so DP133 is the 133rd episode of diamond and pearl. AG147 is the 147th episode of AG, etc. the seasons within those series don’t really matter because having both seasons and series is confusing and so we just ignore seasons lmao.
bulbapedia also uses this convention so its easy to look up episode names on bulbapedia by just, like, typing ‘EP110′ into the search bar. thats why when it comes to a confusingly named series like pokemon journeys, i use whatever they’re using. its the most widely accessible information resource xD
feel free to ask more questions if this isnt clear fdhgf

Why Best Wishes and Iris are my favorite
Pokemon Best Wishes anime is my favorite. There's always been a lot of negativity and dislike towards the anime, so I'll post some reasons why BW is my favorite.
Let's just start off with a background. I stopped watching Pokemon for a while (left at Advance Generations), and I only recently started watching it again. In 2013, I randomly decided to watch a Pokemon Movie which was "Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice". I decided to try watching a few minutes, and then I got hooked and ended up watching the whole movie. I enjoyed the movie a lot actually, and I'd say the movie encompasses a lot why BW is my favorite.
I watched Pokemon again in 2018, I caught Sun and Moon on Disney XD and enjoyed the episode. So, I went backwards, and watched Sun and Moon (the current season), then XY and XYZ (VOD), and then Best Wishes, and then the rest of the Pokemon episodes I missed. And again in 2019 with Twitch Presents (BW and XYZ).
In 2019, Twitch Presents, more Pokemon (BW and XYZ again).
**The reason why I like Best Wishes is kind of the same reason why I like Raimi's Spider-Man 2.** Best Wishes isn't as much as about power levels but about just dealing with things. In Spider-Man 2, Peter did his best to live by “with great power comes great responsibility”. However, as Spider-Man, nothing seem to go right. In fact, Peter being Spider-Man seemed to make him miserable and sad. Spider-Man did not get rewarded for his good deeds or anything. He lost his job. His relationships was going down hill because he had to keep his identity a secret. And Spider-Man had bad publicity in the media.
Peter was starting to feel sad and just was really conflicted if he wanted to be Spider-Man anymore.
For Peter, it's not about Power Levels but it's about struggling with whether he wanted to be Spider-Man still. However, Peter came to realize and be grateful with what he has, and with “great power comes great responsibility”, does his best to become Spider-Man once again. I'd argue just like Spider-Man 2, Best Wishes does a good job at that type of story. Just like the Gen 1 anime.
Best Wishes does a good job with relationships with other characters and bonding and personally (it has a lot heart with how it depicts Ash and his journey).
One important thing is that in real life competitions, 'everyone' is always training and practicing. In the StarCraft scene (for example), and even if someone was great in the past, that doesn't mean they'll still be good and be up to face against newcomers at all.
Best Wishes gets a lot of bad rep because Ash seems to be reset. However, I'd argue Best Wishes does the best job at showing why Ash is the way he is (how he deals with lost and stuff). It's not just training the most but how they approach a situation and how they deal with loss. The question is what difference can a specific person can do to be the truly be the best? Ash in Best Wishes is very distinct.
What I like about Ash in Gen 1 vs a lot of other anime protagonist is that I'd argue Ash has very realistic limitations and struggles with his attempts to attain his dreams. **In Gen 1, Ash just did not have anything go right at all. Ash was late, Pikachu did not listen to him, and later Charizard did not listen to him. Despite things never going his way, Ash always manages to have a lot of heart.** Like when Ash did his best to train by running to charge up Pikachu, and his relationship with his Pokemon. Another example is when Sabrina turned Misty and Brock into dolls, Ash had to find a way to get a Ghost Pokemon to beat Sabrina. He managed to get Haunter and it didn't work out at first but it did in the end.
The way Ash acts in Best Wishes (examples with Keldeo, Meowth, all the Pokemon he caught in Unova, and his relationships) show why he can be the best.
Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice - Keldeo challenges Kyurem but he ends up getting the other Sword of Justice frozen. Ash runs into him, and says "he'll take care of things" and goes off and does his best at trying to free the Sword of Justice even though he knows he has little chance at winning directly. I find the BW Trio to be very endearing. Ash and friends help Keldeo, do their best to fight Kyurem, and Ash and Keldeo form Ash Keldeo (which is like Ash Greninja but it came out before that)... and Keldeo still cannot win but Kyurem decides that Keldeo learned his lesson and the story is done. I really enjoyed the Ash Keldeo vs Kyurem fight, and when I finished Sword of Justice, I felt like I got into Pokemon again. That movie (and the Rival Destinies song) is a good representation on why I like Best Wishes.
Another moment is when Meowth joined the BW Trio, and then later betrayed the BW Trio... Ash says that he had fun with Meowth (even after Meowth betraying him). While Best Wishes does not have the most powered up Ash, I'd argue it has the Ash with the most heart. Another great moment is the Butterfree throwback episode in Best Wishes. Finally, I enjoyed the ending to BW where Team Rocket traps the BW trio but the BW trio manageds to get out of the trap with Ash holding onto the ledge, Cilan next, and Iris next, and Iris swinging everyone up out of the trap to face Team Rocket again. The BW trio was a really fun dynamic. These are just some examples.
**Now, let's get into Ash's power level in Best Wishes.** Pikachu vs Snivy (Trip's Snivy), in that episode Zekrom made Pikachu sick. So, the infamous Pikachu loses to a Snivy that never fought before, and there's that. However, when things got real (Ash vs the Forces of Nature), Ash can still do his best. Pikachu was able to fend off three legendaries (the Forces of Nature) at the Season 2 finale of the Best Wishes anime. So, when things mattered, Ash was still himself. I'd argue in terms of power levels, context matters a lot, and Best Wishes didn't really downgrade Ash (although Ash is definitely more laidback and goofier in Best Wishes, I'd say he was still himself when it was serious).
**Second, I like all the antagonists in Best Wishes.** The thing about Trip is that he's just a random person that kind of acts like a jerk. Like someone you can randomly run into in PvP but he mellows out. Skyla is another good example. She decides who wins or loses based on the meta and type match ups. It's like if in MTG, someone just decides who wins or loses based on decks without even playing. I found Skyla (knows the meta and doesn't think playing is needed), Trip (some random person that kind of acts like a jerk but once you bond with him more, he kind of just mellows out and that's it), and other antagonists a lot fun. There's no real Gary or anything but I find just all the range of characters Ash would battle against interesting and fun.
**Finally, let's talk about why Iris is my favorite.** The reason why I like Iris is because she has a lot of empathy from her desires. Let's get straight to the point, while Iris does say “you're such a kid” (once an episode basically), in terms of actual interactions, Iris is probably the nicest and kindest companion. If I had to pick any companion, I'd pick Iris because she'd always defend you, and be with you, even if things aren't going well.
**[1.]** When Ash first met Iris. Ash accidentally throws a Pokeball at Iris. Despite that though, Iris takes that introduction to be completely fine. Honestly, when I first started watching BW in VOD, I knew of the negativity Iris got but at this point, I never really got it. I mean, she's really nice in the intro episode and all the other episode. Most importantly though, in the third episode (BW003), Iris follows Ash and she tells Ash that she wanted to help show him the region. It's nice of Iris to want to show Ash around. My family and I moved to to the US in the 1980s from Asia. Honestly, if I had to pick a companion, I'd pick Iris because of that. Again, it's just honestly. If you can meet someone, how is Iris not a nice person when she wanted to show Ash around and help him and stuff.
**[2.]** In that same episode (BW003), there is a moment where Ash is about to fall into water but Iris helps catch him. Later, when Trip insulted Ash, Iris defended him (most importantly; I'd argue there aren't that many cases of other companions defending Ash when he gets insulted as Iris does). Whenever Ash fell, Iris always ask if he was fine (“Ash, are you all right?” Again, at this point, how can people dislike Iris when she's really genuinely nice). Iris bought Ash ice cream. And one of my favorite moments is Roxie vs Ash. Ash was losing... and Iris managed to get bongo drums and did her best to cheer on Ash (BW084). It's really touching and heartwarming. I mean, the reason why I like BW is because it really had a lot of nice character dynamics like that. Finally, Iris defends her friends in BW098 (one of my favorites). BW098 is the one where Iris gets the others to crossdress, so that they can enter a competition to defend her friends' honor (Iris defends her friends that were insulted). It's really funny but at the same time really heartwarming too.
**[3.]** Iris's strength in Best Wishes - Iris in Best Wishes is again, a good throwback to Ash in Gen 1. Before Best Wishes began, Iris won 99 times with Drilbur/Excadrill. So, Iris can win when it matters too. In the beginning of BW, Iris does her best to find Dragon type Pokemon (she just has Excadrill and Axew). At first, Iris was afraid of Dragons but she does her best to become a Dragon Master, and so while she does a good job with Excadrill, she tries to train Axew and get other Pokemon. But like Ash, Iris doesn't really (well, especially after the incident with Excadrill) push her Pokemon too much. So, she takes her time with her Pokemon after that incident.
What I like about Iris is she has a lot of interesting dynamics that a lot of other companions do not have. First, I liked that she started off having a strained relationship with Excadrill.
For example, I really like May in AG but May (and I'd argue same with a lot of other companions) did not have that many struggles displayed. May vs Harley. Harley tricks May (giving her the wrong info), and... May falls for it and still wins against Harley (after Ash cheers her on). May is a starting out, and she never really loses or has a dynamic or a story where she struggles with things. In the other series, when a character wanted a Pokemon, thet'd probably get that Pokemon. Basically, do a good deed (want a Pokemon or be nice to a Pokemon) to get a reward (catch Pokemon).
But what I like about Iris's story is that there are times where Iris wants a Pokemon like Tepig (BW004) or Deino (BW056), and Iris does not get that Pokemon. BW056 especially since Iris spent the whole episode staying with Deino since apparently his owner abandoned him (it turned out he was actually just late).
Finally, when Iris managed to get Dragonite to join her, Dragonite did not listen to her at first and struggled. Iris worked really hard to get that Dragonite (defending it from others) but even then, things don't go her way.
Again, I think this is a nice throwback to Gen 1 anime where nothing went Ash's way and he just did his best.
**[4.]** As for Iris saying “you're such a kid”. In BW130, Iris's says “Aww” after Ash tells his story of his Butterfree. In an episode where Cilan and Ash are enjoying a view of a field, Iris says “you two are such kids” while later playing around in water later. When Iris says “you're such a kid”, I hardly say it's an insult at all. I'd argue she's saying it (when she's saying to Ash and Cilan) to me that they're being cute to her.
**[5.]** Personally, I find Iris really funny. Meowth says “Don't worry. I'm empty handed.” Iris replies with “Duh, you're a Pokemon”. Zorua transforms into Georgia (Iris's rival) in front of a camera, and and Iris hides behind the transformed Zorua, and says “Iris is the best” while Zorua lipsyncs for her. Honestly, there's a lot of these moments in Best Wishes and I find it really funny. Iris nice and a fun character to me.
**[6.]** I'll finish this with saying that Iris has a lot of empathy, and what I like is that she has empathy from her desires. I mean, the way she acts and the way she wants (like wanting Deino) is why she defends her friends like in (BW098). Or when Trip insults Ash, and Iris defends Ash. There are very specific moments for Iris that are unique to her as a companion compared to all the others. In a lot of media, a person does nice things to save others or because they went through a tragedy or dark past but I find there's a lack of times where there are characters shown to do nice things because they understand what it feels like to want something.
**Anyway, that's my post and I hope it changes some people's mind about Best Wishes and Iris.** While Best Wishes doesn't really focus on power levels, I'd argue it best show why Ash is the way he is. The Butterfree episode, his experience with having Meowth in the party (he said it was fun), and Sword of Justice Keldeo (Keldeo needed help, Ash knew he had little chance against Kyurem but said 'he'd take care of it'). As for Iris, again I find it really silly for people to dislike her when the only thing negative she does is say “you're such a kid” (which again, I'd argue isn't even an insult when used to Ash and Cilan; there's many times where Iris says “aww” or something else to Ash like in the Butterfree episode).
In Twich Presents (2019), there were around 20k viewers at the beginning and still 20k at the end, and by the end of the last stream, most people said they liked it in chat. Again, I hope my post changes some people's mind about Best Wishes and Iris. Personally, I find the negativity around BW really exaggerated, and especially since I'd argue that Iris is actually one of the nicest and kindest companions (she defends Ash whenever he gets insulted, played bongo drums when losing to Roxie, and did not mind getting hit with a Pokeball by Ash and instead wanted to show Ash around the region since he was new to Unova). And while BW does not have Ash with the most power level (he can still do things when things get serious like Ash and Pikachu vs the Forces of Nature trio legendaries), BW does have Ash with the most heart (lots of nice throwbacks to Gen 1 Ash when he was starting out).

Best Wishes
(I know it's Black and White in english but Best Wishes is a better name) So! Best Wishes Season 1, what do I think so far. Well at the end of the last season I noted that unlike most I liked Unova, but thought it was the only bad gen. Now that I have seen the first season I changed my mind, I don't even think it was bad. Now don't get me wrong, it was definately a step down from Sinnoh, and when Best Wishes messes up it messes up, but as a whole, pretty good so far. Let's start from the top, Ash, is he reset. Answer, no, he does however make a lot of dumb mistakes he shouldn't. Remember how XY kinda remembers BW never happened with it's portrayal of Ash? Kinda feels like BW is doing that with DP, but at the end of the day that really just means he retreads learning stuff he already did in DP, nothing TOO terrible. Iris... tbh I never got the Iris hate? She's like Misty, but with Character development? so better? I really only found her Ash belittling annoying when it's about stuff someone not from Unova logically wouldn't know. Cilan, perfection, nuff said. When I was about to go into this I was like "Just cling to Cilan and Pikachu, they're what make it good" (still think that but add Bianca and Oshawott). Trip, ah Trip, this is where the praise ends. I'd say Trip is one of the biggest flaws of this series. First off, he REALLY shouldn't be a newbie trainer, or if he needed to be he should be a minor rival like Bianca or Stephan. Also I can't talk about Trip without mentioning that infamous Snivy battle. I do still believe people need to remember Zekrom's part in making Pikachu lose, but even with that in mind there are 2 major flaws. 1: Trip, REALLY shouldn't be a newbie trainer, his personality doesn't work for it. If they want a guy running around talking about how much better they are than your protagonist, don't make them way less experienced than your protagonist, and 2: Their attempts to say this is a fluke and an outlier, fall flat when plain and simple, it's not an outlier. If they wanted to convey that it was they shouldn't have had Pikachu lose to him again in their 2nd battle. If I were to give the 2 biggest flaws of this gen so far, it'd be Trip as a rival, and the battle logic, while if I were to give the 2 biggest positives, that would be the humor and Pokemon. I just worry, cause if I remember right, things kinda go downhill from here. I know I have the Virbank gym to be disappointed in next season, but the Meloetta arc is also next season, which I remember being my favorite part of the gen, so we'll see. But anywho, after this unusually long review, let's see those stats!~ Pokemon            Total Fights              Wins              Losses                     % Pikachu                     26                        22                     4                      85% Oshawott                  14                         8                      6                      57% Tepig                        12                         7                      5                      55% Snivy                         7                         4                      3                      57% Tranquil                     5                          2                     3                       40% Krokorok                   4                          1                      3                      25% Swadloon                  4                          3                      1                      75% Roggenrola                3                          2                      1                      67% Palpitoad                   3                          2                      1                      67% Scraggy                     2                          1                      1                     50% Total Fights: 80 So first thing you may notice is Pikachu... BW Pikachu is known for being weaker than before and losing a lot so I'm sure we expected a pretty ugly win rate, but that? That's... average... 4 losses isn't even the worst he's done. So turns out Pikachu didn't lose any more than usual, but every time was exceptionally memorable. I walked into this season saying "Snivy battle, rematch, Panpour gym match, and Iris' Excadrill, I know 4 losses off the top of my head, who knows how many more there were" but, those 4 are the only ones, so went better than expected! (didn't stop his overall win rate from dropping to 87%) The next thing you may notice, but probably aren't surprised by, is everyone else. Das pretty bad X3 altho funnily enough, aside from Infernape, all his Sinnoh Pokemon would fit right in with their overall win rates. Also aren't there a lot of team members this season? This is the first time since Kanto, and last time as of this post where Ash 1: Catches more than 6 Pokemon in a region, and 2: sees all of them in the first season. He hasn't caught Krokorok yet, but he's appeared a few times already, plus he's caught the rest of the team. Speaking of which, if you were looking at Krokorok's low win rate and were like "Wait, I thought Krokorok was one of Ash's star players for Unova, why is his win rate so low?" that's why, he hasn't caught him yet, pretty sure 2 of those losses are Pikachu. I'm not sure who I feel more sorry for, Oshawott, or Snivy. Oshawott, like Piplup last gen, is the punching bag this gen. He gets KOd as a gag a lot, that being part of the reason his rate is so low (not bad considering like, half of those losses were gags). But on the other hand, Snivy has the same win rate, even though she doesn't have any gag losses. (Also unrelated but Snivy and Oshawott are great). Pretty good overall battle count too, believe that gets it 5th overall. Also I think I forgot to mention it, but part of why I doubt anything will beat Sinnoh with it's total battle count is it's the last 4 season gen. But I think that's all for now, Join me next time for Rival Destinies, which hopefully won't see a quality drop :'3

Pokémon BW Rival Destinies: Battle for the Bolt Badge (2012) Comic Storybook Scans
I've got a couple of scanned Pokemon books for today! Mainly because tumblr only allows 30 images per post, and if I combined both posts it'd be too long! Here is a link to the post about the second book!
Both books are from the Black & White anime era of Pokémon, titled BW Rival Destinies. They are “adapted” from episodes of the Black & White anime. By adapted, I mean they simply retell the story of the episodes with screenshots and a comic-like layout and style.
The first book is titled “Battle for the Bolt Badge”, and retells the anime episode “Dazzling the Nimbasa Gym!” This book and episode cover Ash’s gym battle with Elesa.
Tumblr media
They have a three count Pokemon battle, and *spoilers* Ash wins in the end and gets his gym badge. But you probably already guessed that outcome.
Here’s some of my favorite parts of the book!
Elesa sends out Zebstrika, and Ash sends out Palpitoad. I’m crying over the way Palpitoad is just staring down the barrel of a flaming zebra gun three inches away from his face with a smile, unbothered, head completely empty.
Tumblr media
Palpitoad just has so many great expressions. He's the star of this book for me.

What a goofy guy.
By this point Zebstika is eliminated and Elesa has sent out Emolga. Who, by the way, says “Emo, Emo!”
Tumblr media
I know it’s common for Pokémon to use abbreviations of their own names in the anime, but this one is SO funny. Emo, Emo!
Emolga casts attract on Palpitoad and looks cute doing it.
Tumblr media
Palpitoad gets knocked out, and Ash sends out…Snivy? Against an Emolga? Even Ash’s crew is confused at this move.
Tumblr media
Snivy eventually falls, and Pikachu joins in as Ash’s last Pokemon. He takes down Emolga, and the final fight is Pikachu v. Tynamo.
Tynamo proceeds to beat the sh*t out of Pikachu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is it just me, or is Tynamo HUGE? I looked up their heights, and Tynamo is canonically eight inches tall, while Pikachu is one foot four inches.
It's so funny when creatures in games are portrayed bigger or smaller than they actually are. I understand it in a Pokémon game, given the limited framing of battles, but even in the game Tynamo is portrayed as quite small. Definitely smaller than a Pikachu.
Maybe this Tynamo is larger than most. Or maybe it's normal size and everything in the Pokémon universe, including people, are tiny. That'd be kind of funny considering the size of Tynamo in comparison to both Pikachu AND Ash in the above frames.
Anyways, I'm thinking too hard about this, I know it's not that deep. Lol.
Pikachu picks himself up and defeats Tynamo, earning Ash the Nimbasa badge.

The End!

As always, you can read the whole book(s) and view higher quality scans on my Internet Archive account.
Thanks for reading!

Note
Help me! I got a Pokemon theme tune in my head, but I don't remember anything else of it beyond the lyrics: All together now, friends forever now! Which song is that?
I had to look it up myself but it’s the theme from Pokemon BW/Rival Destinies!

It’s pretty rare to see a left-handed character in an animated show, but Roxie from Pokemon is one. Very cool.
