Special little essay after the news of Craig McCracken making a new Powerpuff Reboot.
Tumblr media
Yes, I know people don’t like the 2016 Reboot. Yes, I know that despite being a fan of it there are problems. No, the show runner did not insert himself into the series as Blossom’s Boyfriend, the animators did it. But there are good things in this series that under McCracken’s hands could be a benefit to this new reboot. So here they are...
Tumblr media
1 - The Bikini Sisters
Every new villain introduced in this reboot is pretty bad. Manboy is basically Sedusa except for a guy and more screen time. Packrat is unmemorable and they had a character whose gimmick is being unmemorable. And Silico is such a disappointment. The only exception is the Bikini Sisters, who feel like they could have been recurring villains in the original series. Under Craig’s hands, I bet they would be better received than their 2016 version.
Tumblr media
2 - Bubbles the Programmer
A flaw I see in the original series is that the girls have basically superficial differences between each other. When they’re not fighting because of generic “I should be the leader” and the occasional one shot, they basically share the same thought. With the 2016 series they introduced more ways the girls are different from each other. One of my personal favorites is them being smart in their own way. No “Blossom is the smart one, so she does the smart things” like the original, now they have their own fields of expertise. While Buttercup being good at Math one I felt was dumb, Bubbles as a Programmer makes perfect sense. Her ability is knowing all sorts of language and her being knowledgeable of Computer Languages makes so much sense. Plus it adds to her original creative mind in a new and modern way.
Tumblr media
3 - Have their own Social Circles
How many kids in the original series have an importance in the series for more than one episode? Butch and Judy Smith. How many kids do the girls know in 2016? The Derbytantes, Jemoire, Barry, the boring one… Even including the mistake the girls are shown to have an actual social life beyond being a good guy. Heck, Robin made more appearances in the Reboot than she did after her introducing episode. To go with the above “let the girls be their own selves”, let them have their own group of friends. There are a ton of one shots in the original so they don’t even need to use 2016 or even make new ones.
Tumblr media
4 - Let Him Be behind the Unexplained Monsters
Remember that Lie Monster that showed up in that one episode for no reason other than to push the lesson “don’t lie”? Did it bother you that it basically happened for no reason? That’s where 2016 comes in with their own take: Him is behind it because he likes to torture. Him being the explanation behind any random attacks not from Monster Island would be great to show just how much of a threat Him is beyond episodes where he is the main villain.
Tumblr media
5 - The Morbucks Development
Ignoring the one episode that teased a face turn for Morbucks but never went anywhere with it, I do enjoy the fact she’s no longer trying to be a Powerpuff Girl but instead is trying to prove she’s better than them. It really changes the dynamic of their rivalry and can make Morbucks attack physically with her varying machines or socially by making herself more popular than the girls.
Tumblr media
6 - Bubblevicious 2.0
In the original, people love Bubblevicious. But for me, Bubblevicious was a sharp rocked while 2016’s Octi-Father made it into a shiv. It's a level of threat-ness that creates fear with barely any action. Because you know you pushed Bubbles too far and if you ain’t trying to make it up to her before her time limit, you ain’t waking up.
Tumblr media
7 - Have a Love Interest that won’t ruin the Powerpuff Girls’ job
In the original, the Professor had two dates: Sedusa who used him to keep the girls out of her hair and Mrs. Keane who tied up the hotline for days. Sapna just liked the Professor. While she was annoying to them hanging out, she didn’t stop them from doing their jobs as superheroes. And it was nice to see the Professor actually have a love interest that won’t put Townsville in danger. It doesn’t have to be Sapna, just someone the Professor can perform chemistry with.
Tumblr media
8 - The Emotional Episodes
Two episodes in the 2016 series I would say are great episodes: Home, Sweet Homesick and Bubbles the Blue. The first is Blossom trying to learn in a camp she thought was educational only to learn that you only have one childhood so enjoy it. The other is Bubbles feeling sad for some reason and knowing that sometimes it's just okay to be sad. These episodes I consider the best of the series and would put them on the same tier as the originals. If the new reboot can do episodes like these, I think it would be great.
Tumblr media
9 - Specific Connections with Each other
Yes, the Professor is definitely dumber than the original. And yes, there are plenty of times they showed family bonds in the original. But one thing I liked in the 2016 ones are the specific ways each one loves each other. Road Trippin’, for example, shows the Professor enjoying monster movies with Buttercup, doing science with Blossom and learning about the artists Bubbles likes to get to be closer with her. Blossom and Buttercup appreciate when one has a cool line. Buttercup and Bubbles enjoy having fun together. Blossom acts like the older sister to both of them. It’s nicer than your typical Sitcom Family love the original I felt had.
Tumblr media
10 - Have a Sort of Ongoing Story
While Silico was a terrible disappointment, he did have a sort of ongoing story as you see in modern cartoons. I think, if done right, an ongoing story through a season of PPGs to build to a finale would be great to do. And as seen with McCracken’s work prior to the new PPG Reboot, he definitely can do the job better than the original.

a great villain with sadly wasted potential i remember someone showing an article on discord about this guy and it was stated by the writers that they originally had plans for his backstory to be much darker but thanks to CN they were forced to make it silly, i certainly have a new idea for his backstory but thats a secret for now ;) as for his design since he was mostly shown as a silhouette there wasn't too much for me to work with but i thought it would be a neat idea if the upper part of his body was silhouetted while the lower part wasn't, kinda leaves some mystery as to what he looks like (kinda like Miss Bellum in a way)

A headcanon-ish generation gap of some of Townsville’s baddies I made for fun!
Emphasis on some. I know the GGG are in that sort of 80-90′s grunge category, but they actually fit their element and don’t feel… stuck in the gap? Lol.
More info about each date under the cut-
Wintress - She is based on the snow queen, so of course, she originated from somewhere around the mid to late 1800's. Because of this origination, she is fond of opera and victorian era clothes. Unlike the others though, Wintress is able to keep up and adapt, most wouldn't even figure she's that old. Abracadaver - Poor guy died in his prime, when the Mayor was a kid no less. Perished before colored film became a thing. Returning to the modern era has probably been confusing for him, but he tries not to pay attention as he's more focused on his revenge. He doesn't understand why everything moves so fast now… Morgan - Era of playboy magazines peaking in popularity, and drag slowly coming into the scene. Morgan isn't afraid to just dress however he wants, but definitely favors vintage. The cordyceps and his cause of death are the reason why he isn't as mangled as his boss. Boogie Man - This guy has existed since the 1500's but finally got his groove for spooking in the 1970's. Unfortunately, when disco died, it led to him becoming super defensive about it, as he refuses to let go. This is actually canon in the PPG comics too, Boogie Man hates when someone insults disco. HIM - Oh yeah, definitely into the drag or glam scene despite being a literal devil. He manages to work it even when that phase fizzles out too and seems to handle criticism of his style pretty well. Even in the comics, he's shown to be a fan of metal, giving a makeover to a garage band. Silico - I included Silico because I like him. He’s the example of someone who always advances rather than clinging to the past like everyone else. I consider him a part of the classic canon even if I don’t deem the reboot as such, because he just… fits perfectly with the cast. He literally uses social media to try to cancel the Puffs, and that's hilarious to me.

Ppg anon here. Dude, I love all of them lol. But I’ll name a few Gang green gang, Fuzzy Lumpkins, The rose gnome, boogie man, silico and HIM. There’s others but I can’t name them lol
Wow, I remember GGG. Looking them all up is quite a trip down memory lane. Fuzzy Lumpkins, too! Omg. Boogie Man is the slickest mf in the game.  I don’t recall Rose Gnome or Silico, though. Must’ve missed their episodes.
But HIM. That’s my boy right there. I’ve had a crush on that red bastard and his high heels since I was a kid.

Not canon to my AU just a what if concept for Bliss, Bunny and their counter parts. Started out as just some basic PPG character designs and I often think about how Bunny would work in my AU. So after seeing a few people put Bliss and Bunny together as a team I thought it was a cute idea. Which lead me to wonder about what their counterparts would look like and here we go. Backstory: Sometime after Bliss had been created Dr.Sapna Utonium (formerly Nehru) was investigating a purple piece of fabric left by HIM when he was disguised as Dr. DeVille, which radiated Chemical X properties. With curiosity getting the better of her, Dr. Sapna compared the chemicals to the same mixture used to create Bliss when an accident happen. Thanks to a Monster attack the cloth was knocked into the mixture with an dose of chemical X and boom, Bunny was born. Despite the Powerpuff Girls being happy and wanting Bunny to move back with them, Bunny chose to stay with her 'cousin' and trail her own path. On the same Island, Powerful tech genius Silico was growing annoyed with these new hero's ruining his schemes and calling out his less than legal practices, when he decided to fight fire with fire and create his own boys, contacting a few old associates for help. Using Snips, snails and badger tails (puppy dog tails are hard to find) to make Burst and Badger. In the mirror world, the story goes for the same beat, Dr. Plutonium the manipulative wife of the Oppressor's brother made her own puff to help take over her home and by accident brings back the Punks fallen sister.  To stop the new evil duo, Granite, an environmentalist scientist created his own RowdyRight Boys, Brass and Bugs, to stop the Doctors rein of terror. --- Brief Bio's Bliss: Still the same shy nerd who likes to write in her free time. Has a hard time acting as a leader but she's learning. Bunny: While a bit slower and dim-witted, Bunny is still the sweet, friendly soul as before. A strong fighter, Bunny suffers from a lot of sensory overload and will shut down if pushed. Her teeth are still a bit janky but she likes them and has the brightest smile. -- Burst: The cool, reserved, if not emotionally absent in some ways, Burst is the leader of his duo. Keeping his head straight Burst usually keeps Badger in line, before letting loose. Not a full villain he just like to mess with the girls. Has a good relationship with his 'dad' so he doesn't want to let him down. Badger: If you want to talk about a perfect name to a person, Badger is your guy. An aggressive, ruthless, resourceful, angry little dude, who just wants to be left alone. While not suffering the same set backs as his counterpart, he also isn't as verbal. Glaring, side eyeing and snapping at those who get in his face, instead of talking. Has a soft side for his brother and dad who he will actually talk to. ---- Blitz: Reserved and cruel Bats: Wild and crazy. Brass: Gentle and straightforward Bugs: Fun loving and sweet --- Truthfully I've always been hesitant to add Bunny as I didn't know how to handle her design without straight up copying others or it looking off. So pleas tell me what you think! Bliss and Bunny belong to the PPG Designs belong to me

How CUTE is this?! I have always loved PPG so this was an absolute must have.

I love that they made this a 12 shade palette, but I admit I would have liked more bright colours.

Powerpuff Girls x ColourPop look #1: On the inner halves of my lids I applied Townsville, blending it into Prof. Utonium, dabbing both on with my ring finger. In the crease I’ve used Silico, The Fashionistas, and Rowdyruff Boys.

Don’t get any ideas. Unlike Ben 10 Reboot, I only watch episodes purely if he’s gonna show up (So, twice basically). Otherwise, I don’t care for that trainwreck. Goodbye.

You see so much negativity about this show, let’s do something positive.
Original Art used before was by AJthePPGfan
Tumblr media
The Catalyst
So I was watching Shadow Streak’s review on Save the Date when I notice a comment being upset that the girls are being constantly saved. I said that its only noticeable because the original focused on more action and had more episodes. If you count, you would probably see the girls being saved around the same amount of time. So I did via a speadsheet. This article was going to focus mostly on this before, but then the next review “Can’t Buy Love” happened.
One of Shadow Streak’s biggest complaint is that he doesn’t like the fact a six year old is having romantic feelings when they shouldn’t. I posted that they did show Buttercup give the Professor “something” for his date with the disguised Sedusa. For most people its likely a breath mint but I bet for others its a little more adult. And not mentioned in the comment is when the original had the confirmed 6 year old Buttercup crushing on a guy and said young adult taking advantage of her feelings. Don’t worry, its more about taking over Townsville.
There are plenty of reasons to dislike the show (Donny for example) but I would like the dislike being because of your taste and proper reasons. So while I could sit here and debunk others reasons (at least the ones that can be debunked), I think it would be better to see something more positive. So here are 10 things I like in the Reboot that would have made the original much better.
Tumblr media
1 - Buttercup and the Derbytantes
Its no secret Buttercup is my favorite Powerpuff. And looking at the reboot it seems like Buttercup is the favorite there as well since if episodes aren’t focused on her she is doing something to advance the story. And outside some minor changes (like her wanting to make cash being an extension from her Tooth Knocking Out Business from the original), she hasn’t seen significant changes. But a positive to her and the others to a lesser extent is that they have friends beyond one episode or each other.
All thee of them got Barry, Blossom has Jared Shapiro (who is hit and miss) and Bubbles had Donny (who is a constant miss). But I’m making this about the Derbytantes for two reasons: 1- they’re less awful than the two previously. 2- they show Buttercup having interest outside her sisters. She has a group of friends who gets her. Who accepts her even if she is a Math Genius. And who share in her kind of fun her sisters wouldn’t. It makes Buttercup more than just the Tough one of the group.
Tumblr media
2 - Blossom
In the original, Blossom was the least interesting to me. She was basically just the leader with your typical “I’m the leader so you should listen to me” attitude when Buttercup wants to go in. You know how many episodes focused on Blossom in the original? Four: ice powers, her stealing clubs, her hair getting ruined and suddenly losing and gaining confidence. Great for action scenes but as a character it makes her really one note.
In the Reboot, they gave her more to do. With Jared it shows she has a crush and how she deals with it. Her ego gets more explored as she has to handle not being in the right or being as good as she thinks she is. And even outside the 12 episodes focused on her, she has a lot more interactions with her sisters that makes them seem like sisters. One of my favorite moments is how Blossom suddenly acts like Rambo when the Daisy Robot takes over the house. To me, Blossom is a much more interesting character in the Reboot than the Original.
Tumblr media
3 - Bubbles
While the Reboot feels like it favors Buttercup, the Queen of the Powerpuffs is Bubbles. When it comes to episodes focused on her, she’s the most in both the Reboot and the Original. Even the final episode of the original was a Bubbles focused one. While the Reboot does make her more airheady than the original at times, there’s one addition they made that not only is a great addition in my book but also perfectly extends to her character: her being a programmer.
From the original we know two important things: she’s creative and she knows other languages. Coding is basically another language and you know programmers can do amazing things. The concept of Easter Eggs was born because a programmer wanted to add something and said thing turned out to be a brilliant addition to prove their program was stolen. This is a perfect fit for Bubbles to show that you can be smart in your own way than to just give this to Blossom because she’s the generic smart one.
Tumblr media
4 - The Professor
Him being more like the dumb fathers in animation is a justified complaint about the show. I feel its because he became a butt monkey in the end of the original series (having his voice stolen with the blessing of the Girls, acting like a child when they could fly instead of using his buggy, danced pants) and they decided to play it up more here. But there are moments I feel this Professor is a better father than the original.
There are two episodes focused on the Professor learning about the subject his girls are interested in so he can enjoy it alongside them. There’s an episode of a creation he made for the sole purpose of making sure they can’t guilt trip him into allowing them to stay up all night. And my personal favorite, being so angry he single handedly drove down to Townhall as Blossom is mind controlled because she disobeyed her. Even to the point that he won’t even let the other girls out of the car despite being thrown around. It just shows a lot more love than the original.
Tumblr media
5 - The Fashionistas
The strongest aspect of the original are the villains. They are arguably the best part of the original. But sadly besides Morbucks they don’t have a strong female villain that can be put on the same pedestal as the likes of Mojo Jojo and HIM. Sedusa is so one note she usually loses to other people besides the Powerpuff Girls. For the reboot, their new villains don’t have the same spark as the old with one exception: the Fashionistas.
Consisting of the Bikini Sisters, Bianca and Barbarus, these two have a clear theme, unique plans and great personalities that can bounce off each other or other characters. Like feel free to hate the Bridezilla episode but I really loved that Bianca’s reason to break up the marriage was because she felt she would be left alone since Barbarus was the Popular one, the Funny one and the Attractive one. Its a nice dynamic that I think would have been great for the original.
Tumblr media
6 - Silico
Despite having the most questionable reason since the show does a bad job telling us things like time, Silico is a good take for a villain that hasn’t been done in the original. Instead of being created alongside them, being jealous of them, or just simply being evil, Silico is a villain because of their actions. Since they destroyed his friends, even by complete accident, he’s going to destroy them.
This also was their attempt at an ongoing storyline in a similar vein as Steven Universe or Gravity Falls: have episodes be episodic and self contained but have clues or moments that would lead up to a later episode. Granted, not the best of said attempts but it is an honest effort to try.
Tumblr media
7 - Episodes
Its easy to point out Bad episodes and say they’re not as good as the original, but I think people underestimate those moments when the Reboot not only has a good episode but knocks it out of the park. I could highlight these good episodes and compare them to the original’s bad ones but that is not a fair assessment. But what I will do is highlight three episodes that I feel not only are the Reboot’s best episodes but also up there with the best of the original.
Home, Sweet Homesick: the episode where Blossom discovers that you shouldn’t grow up too fast and enjoy your time as a kid. Bubbles the Blue: you can feel sad and that’s okay. And finally the Octi-Father: the rage you see in Bubblevicious sharpened as a knife and even more dangerous. All without actually throwing a punch. That’s how you know you’re intimidating.
Tumblr media
8 - More of HIM
One of the biggest flaws of the remake is the lack of using the other villains. Outside HIM, Morbucks and Mojo, the most the others get is an episode of the Amoeba Boys working for Silico and the Gangreen Gang hustling. And while I do enjoy Mojo and Morbucks in the Remake, I know others don’t. But one you have to agree got a major push in a good way is HIM. This series really shows him living up to his one line: “Why destroy when you can torture with tooth decay” The Reboot also explains somethings weird from the original.
Remember the White Lie monster? How he seemingly came from nowhere and just as fast suddenly gone? The Reboot has a Secret Swapper Monster who was defeated in the same way: confessing. But the major difference is we know the Secret Swapper came from HIM, explaining why it suddenly came to be. This series shows how he can be just as devious as the devil people think he is.
Tumblr media
9 - Concepts
Its easy to remake something: just update the graphics and fix the problems here and there. But it is hit and miss when you add something to make it a reboot. We’ve seen hits in Ducktales Reboot and we’ve seen fails in both Thundercats reboots. But while some of the ideas the Reboot of Powerpuff Girls presented are misses, there are some good ideas.
Silico I mentioned above. A 4th Powerpuff Girl as a result of a previous attempt at creating the Perfect Little Girl not working out is another interesting concept. Mojo creating a Robot that can match the girls in ways the Rowdyruff Boys couldn’t. Morbucks possibly being turned good. These are very interesting concepts. The Reboot not making it work doesn’t mean these ideas couldn’t been more successful under better hands.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention - Lego
Love Lego. Love Powerpuff Girls. Match made in Heaven. Just got to get Morbucks and Mojo.
Tumblr media
10 - Inspiration
The one thing you have to give credit to the Reboot is that it inspired people to make stuff about it. Granted, a lot of it being stuff more in favor of the original but there are some great pieces out there about the old meeting the new. Some even highlighting how the Powerpuff Girls has changed over the years.
You got new, younger fans being introduced to these girls and soon wanting more discovering the originals. You have old fans revisiting the originals to show others how much better these were. You got a reviewer in Shadow Streak looking into each episode of the reboot to give them a fair shot. And be honest, the Powerpuff Girls wouldn’t be discussed as much as it is today if it wasn’t for the reboot.
And that’s my list. I know its easy to dislike the Reboot, but I hope this list helps you understand why it has fans. And hopefully it’ll help you appreciate this when the Live Action Movie of the PPG comes...
