are you still in the drrr fandom?
while drrr will always be close to my heart and shizuo will always be my bestest boy i can't say i am 'in' the fandom anymore, unfortunately. admittedly, it is part of why i left tumblr for twitter. i am keeping all reference materials up still for those interested on the blog.
my current fandoms are ffxiv, dnd (dimension20 mostly but some critrole), danmei novels (mxtx, meatbun, priest, etc), genshin impact, and whatever floats my boat as it comes up.

The Curse
Day 3 ingury/ hurt & confort/ vampire!au
Vampire!au
Shizaya
Summary ( Shizuo and Izaya finally discussed the curse that had bound them together for a lifetime.)
On Ao3
Notes: Since the start of this fandom we had created so many names of each persona of Izaya and Shizuo. So I will return this fic to the roots of 2012 where we used to name our Shizaya's personas. An easter egg if you will! I had fun with this fic so I hope you do also!
  "Do you think she will know?" Shizuo casually said as he looked down at the road.
  At that specific moment, Celty moved past the road they were watching. Izaya smirked at Celty while he held his knife closer to him.
  "Perhaps. She must have obtained her head. So I believe sooner or later, she will remember both of us. Celty is not stupid and she knows damn well who is with her and who is not. Another piece of our plan goes as we wanted."
  Shizuo threw his cigarette inside his small bag and put it in his jacket. He sighed but nodded. Today was the perfect day for them to give Celty her head back. The moon was full and her powers would return shortly back at her as well as her memories.
  "Do you regret it?" Izaya asked finally as he stood up from where he was sitting and turned at Shizuo. Brushing his neck.
  Shizuo looked at the moon, avoiding Izaya's gaze at him or rather... the motion and after some time, he shook his head.
  "If it was someone else, I wouldn’t. But it was you so... yes."
  "Then why you did it?"
  "I didn't care then, but now I do."
  Izaya turned at the edge of the roof and looked down.
  "Is that so? Then why don't you leave me be? Have your ways elsewhere and also me having my ways elsewhere?"
  Shizuo looked at his hand for a moment. Then turned at Izaya who had turned his face and watched Shizuo.
  "You know damn well that I can't. And also that means you. We can't...part ways."
  Izaya looked at him and he smirked looking up. He was looking so hurt and Shizuo wanted to help him. Make him feel better. But he knew that he couldn't. He had chosen this. He had made that mistake and knew what would follow.
  But sometimes he wished he could change the past.
  Shizuo looked at Izaya who finally smirked normally again and walked closer to Shizuo. Shizuo would back away but he knew what Izaya wanted him to do. And with that, he turned his gaze at Izaya's eyes. They burned when he observed them with emotions. So many and all of them directed to him. Yet some of them were new. Perhaps because they had finally found out a way out of this. A new hope. Yet Shizuo didn't want it but Izaya needed it.
  He wanted to scream at him, telling him his feelings but he knew how Izaya would react. He would react like the first time he had done... this to him.
  Shizuo sighed. It was so many years ago yet he remembered it that damn well.
 -ooo-
   He was...a priest. And a popular one too. He had his church, his own house, his people to help, and of course, his own life. Yet some things come to an end. He was assigned with something to destroy. Something unpleasant. A witch.
  He had managed to defeat her and had returned without problem. Happiness and cheers were what he remembered last before he woke up again. This time his hands were bloody, he was hurt and the village...was destroyed. And anything was inside it was...dead. He remembered crying and knowing that he wasn't the murderer but also knowing that he was the cause of this disaster.
  He remembered going elsewhere in another town. Yet again another massacre with only him alive. Everyone saw him as a monster, the murderer, even if he wasn't. Rather no one could see the true cause. The one that caused this. But it was clear.
  Shizuo was cursed.
  So, he disappeared and had managed to find the cause of this curse. The witch had cursed him to live for eternity and whichever place he went to would suffer the fate of the witch's demise. It would be destroyed beyond repair.
  Shizuo had tried to kill himself but anything he did nothing was killing him. Nothing. He was for the first time in his life...lost. And the church couldn't guide him. It rejected him.
  With that Shizuo tried to find a cure, yet nothing was helping him. He was on the verge of hiding, finding a place without anyone before someone approach him. A weird person but full of wisdom. They had told him to find a village and there we would join the vampire hunters. From there, anything else would be clear to Shizuo.
  So he did. He went to the village, became their priest, and became a vampire hunter. From there he waited for the sign. And it came.
  It was an ordinary day. Raining as always. And there in his church benches, he saw a small figure. Shizuo went closer and he finally understood what he needed to do. That figure turned at him and smiled weakly yet his eyes showed fear. His face was bloody and he had moved up from the bench and looked behind for a moment. Considering leaving.
  Shizuo wouldn't let him.
  "What can I do for you, my child? Don't be afraid. We are here to help." Shizuo’s voice turned friendlier and lifted his hand.
  The man looked between the door and Shizuo, yet as Shizuo knew, he turned at Shizuo.
  "I...I am kinda lost, father." He said. He was so innocent, so pure. and Shizuo considered leaving the man.
  Yet...he wouldn't.
  "Of course my child. I can help you find your way. But let me help you. What is your name?" Shizuo said and moved his hand at the man who looked at it.
  The man slowly touched Shizuo’s hand. "I... I am Izetsuki."
  With that Shizuo took care of the man, letting him stay at the church. Shizuo learned his history, who he was, and what he did. Izetsuki was a good man, a duke. Yet a disaster had taken everything from him. Shizuo wondered if that was him yet the village and place where the man lived were unknown to him.
  Izetsuki was getting beautiful as the days passed or Shizuo thought at first. He started to fall for the man and that would be a sin if he hasn't already fallen deeper. He started to have fun with the man, spending more time with him. Making him regret what he was about to do.
  And what he wasn't supposed to do.
  Shizuo had thought that if he was the cause of the disaster before the curse took part, he would be free of it. So he started what he thought was his freedom. He was about to kill Izetsuki. Izetsuki just smiled when he saw Shizuo approach him. That smile turned into an agate mouth as Shizuo was starting to choke him to death. Izetsuki's eyes turned empty making Shizuo stop what he did and looked at him. Izetsuki held Shizuo’s hands and more tears started falling from his eyes. And then he said it...
  "...w...why...you.. you monster!" And with that Shizuo felt it.
  The curse took place and when he woke up he was inside a burnt church. In his arms was Izetsuki's corpse. He had managed to choke him to death, had started the disaster. Yet his curse was intact. He held Izetsuki's body closer to him and cried. What did he do wrong?
  Why this time it hurt more?
  Was it because of Izetsuki? He hugged Izetsuki as he brushed his hair. Shizuo cried more this time feeling empty for the first time in his life.
  "You can save him." Someone said.
  Shizuo looked up and saw the weird person that guided him here in this city. He was angry at them and yet he couldn't turn his anger to them.
  "If I do, he will be cursed as well. Not just by living an eternity by also from the curse each vampire has. And mine is more painful than life itself."
  The person nodded at them.
  "That's true. Yet...how long were you with him?"
  Shizuo grieved more with this simple sentence, getting angrier. "ARE YOU TEASING ME?" He yelled at them but the person shook their head.
  "It was a question, not a mockery."
  Shizuo started thinking the question. He was with Izetsuki for a long time. They had spent their time together and after some time they had chosen what Shizuo thought was a sin a long time ago but now was fully accepting it. Living together. Loving each other.
  Shizuo’s eyes shined. How long was he with Izetsuki truly? When he had met Izetsuki, he was...a mere teenager. And now he was an adult. He gasped at his thoughts and realized. He was with Izetsuki for so many years and yet he hadn't noticed it.
  The person nodded. "Your curse can't be lifted but...it can be stopped."
  Shizuo looked at the person and then at Izetsuki's body. He looked so pale and yet it was liked he was sleeping in his hands. Like something, they used to do. Shizuo looked away frustrated.
  He was stupid. He hadn't realized what had happened blinded by his curse to see that he had found the solution.
  "If I...bring him back....will his curse have the same solution?"
  He asked the figure in front of him. It moved slightly but stopped in front of him finally changing its form, making Shizuo realized to whom he was talking.
  "It will... with something more added to his."
  Shizuo moved back slightly, opening his mouth and showing his teeth, and moved Izetsuki's head so he could have a better angle. With that he was ready.
  "And what is that dullahan?" He asked and moved his head biting Izetsuki, bringing him back to life.
  Celty looked at the moon and smiled sadly.
  "To live forever with a monster you hate."
 -ooo-
  Shizuo looked away from Izaya finally breaking their eye contact.
  "That’s new. You never looked away without saying something." Izaya commented while Shizuo turned completely away from him.
  He looked away yet again at the moon, feeling the moonlight shine down at his skin. Making him stronger. He tsked. Only in strength. Not in what he wanted. He made his hand a fist, clearly troubled by his emotions. He should do this. He needed to do this. With that he said it.
  "Do you remember the past?" He asked Izaya still not facing him.
  "What a weird question. I can't forget it, can I?"
  "Do you Izetsuki?" He asked and before he said anything else he felt a strong slash being created at his back.
  Shizuo had touched a nerve. He sighed.
  "Don't call me that. Don't ever call me that!" Izaya yelled at him with a steady voice. "Only one could say that name and that man is now dead to me!"
  "What if..." Shizuo turned and looked at him. "...he is still here?"
  Izaya moved back, away from Shizuo. His eyes burned and yet his face was emotionless like the mask he always wore around.
  "He...is dead...to me!"
  "Is he truly Izaya?" Shizuo asked and Izaya finally tsked.
  "What do you think? Do you think I like the life he created for me? To be with him always. With the one who cursed me to live this life? With the one who killed me?"
  Shizuo held eye contact with Izaya wanted to prove to him what he felt towards him. After everything had happened Izetsuki wanted to leave but Shizuo had explained everything to him. On what he did, why he did, and what curse Izetsuki would have. It was...a really intense memory. Shizuo had noticed that rather than the vampire curse giving him strength, Izetsuki got a sharper mind. His inhumanly kindhearted, patient and understanding persona changed and he became the exact opposite. His strength was at the words. Winning Shizuo at everything.
  So after everything that happened, the fights and the separation that made Izetsuki understand what the curse meant, they had found a way living like this. Both would live apart yet they would meet up when they notice the curse took part. This way both of them were saved from the curse and Shizuo gave space to Izetsuki. Yet this wasn't enough, Shizuo notice. Izetsuki was unhappy and finally, he snapped and fought Shizuo.
  It was the best he ever had.
  Izetsuki continued fighting him and Shizuo let him do it. That at least made Izetsuki have some control over the curse. And Shizuo wanted him to. With that, they continued.
  After some centuries they changed places and names. Izetsuki became Hibiya, Psyche...Izaya. Only one thing didn't change and that was Shizuo’s emotions towards Izaya.
  So he needed to express them. He needed to show what he felt.
  "He was blinded..."
  "Excuses!" Izaya barked back, smirking at him.
  Shizuo was in the loss here but he would make it count.
  "HE was blinded and didn't see what was important to him. Not then. But now he can see it. He can feel it now."
  "Then why he didn't leave the person dead if he knew what would happen."
  "Because he didn't understand the consequences."
  "That's why he is getting them now! Can you see it?"
  Shizuo punched the wall next to him, finally feeling his full power getting back to him. His teeth had appeared. Izaya on the other hand didn't have strength but speed in his arsenal and his vampire feature was his eyes becoming readers well as vampire wings appearing behind him.
  "I always saw them. And yet I endure them! But I can anymore deny my feeling for you. Not deny but hide them. I am in love with you Izaya!"
  Shizuo yelled at Izaya who looked away. Shizuo stopped dumbfounded. Izaya never avoided eye contact. Only Izetsuki did it when he knew he was wrong somewhere.
  Izaya looked back at him. He looked once again broken and yet that damn smirk was on him. Shizuo showed his teeth and finally, he moved near Izaya hugging him. He knew he would be hit, stabbed, or something.
  Yet nothing happened.
  Izaya let Shizuo hug him. Or rather he hugged him back. Shizuo relaxed at it and smelled finally Izaya's smell. It was the first time after this damn curse they shared that they hugged. They let each other get embraced in silence.
  Izaya started shaking finally and Shizuo hugged him closer, feeling protective once again after so damn centuries.
  "I hate this..." Izaya whispered and Shizuo felt his heart drop. Izaya's voice was so empty, so different.
  "I do also." Shizuo said and whispered at Izaya's neck. "But we can change it. We can find another way."
  Izaya laughed as he used to and Shizuo tightened his hold.
  "Can we? Truly, Pritzuo?"
  Shizuo felt himself fall at this. He felt tears fall down his eyes. Izaya had said his name. His real name. He moved back and looked at Izaya who had also teared up. His eyes were like they used to, that innocent Izetsuki. Shizuo understood what Izaya gave him.
  Another chance.
  And he would take it, embrace it. Shizuo nodded at Izaya who gave him that smile that he had given him before his death. That easy-going innocent smile.
  "Then...my monster, let's us do what we had created to happen here...."
  Shizuo held Izaya's hand, finally feeling the burden he held so long being lifted off him. "...Together." He smiled back at Izaya finally free from his curse and this time being the one controlling it.
  Izaya tightened the hold and smirked at Shizuo. "Together."
  With that they kissed, lifting their curse.

I’m headed to work but Jules and Syo, would you be so kind to answer all the wedding asks? I’ll be sure to see you again and talk more after my shift❤️❤️ (I’ll be attending with Shizuo) - stars-sunglasses-and-sodapop
Aaah! Meeeena, you’re here! And hello, Shizuo~!💗💗💗 @stars-sunglasses-and-sodapop
Hello, Meena and Shizuo! It’s nice to see you dropped by, Jules was very excited for you to come. ^-^
Oooh, that are a lot of questions! Shall we get started, princess?
Yes!
(Since you wanted all of the asks, Meena, I‘ll start putting the rest under the cut after the first few!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🎨 - What are the wedding colors you and your F/O decided on?
Pink, White and Gold! We stayed true to our aesthetic, it fits us the best! ^-^
👗-What kind of wedding dress or suit did you and your F/O get? Give an explanation or show a picture.
I went for a kimono-inspired blush pink dress with sakura embroidery. Custom made by my father-in-law. It was important for us to combine Japanese and European culture and this was a good start!
I went for a classic white suit with pink elements here and there and my signature hat!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🏢- Where did you and your F/O first meet?
In front of a bookstore in Japan a few years ago! I still remember that it was early December. It was an accidental meeting but definitely the best “accident” that could have ever happened. :D
💕-Who said “I love you first”, you or your F/O?
It was me! Honestly, it was more of a “blurting it out” kinda situation. He was out of the country for work and I missed him so much that I just had to get it out on the next video call. I’m still a little embarrassed about it...
Don’t be! I thought it was really sweet! ^-^
[blushes]
💒- Are you two getting married outside or inside a certain place?
It’s outdoors! Perfect for a spring wedding!
It was the first thing we immediately agreed on after getting engaged!
👨‍🦳-Did you and your F/O get a priest to have you two married? Or did you two get another religious or neutral official for your marriage?
We got an officiant for the wedding.
👣-Who walked you down the aisle to your F/O? A familial or platonic F/O?
It was Syo’s dad who walked me down the aisle. I have a really good relationship with his parents and, since I don’t have anyone on my side, I wanted it to be him.
I’m still a little mad about it. He saw you in your dress before me... T^T
Aww, babe. I love you~
Love ya too!
💃- Who’s the best dancer during your first dance together? You or your F/O?
Syo! I mean, he’s an idol AND STARISH’s best choreography specialist!
🎶- What kind of music did you play at you and your F/Os reception?
All sorts of things! From Classical music (for the first dance) to STARISH’s own songs.
🎧- Did you and your F/O hire a DJ at your reception? Or get a live band to play all your songs there?
Well, sort of live band? There’s a huge soundbox with speakers in the back and the guys and QN immediately jumped on the idea to sing a few songs at our wedding, back when we were still planning. Even Tomochika and Nanami planned something! Jules and I were really touched by all the surprises the people close to us planned...
There was a moment of Shining wanting to sing too but that’s another story we won’t talk about-
🥘- What kind of food did you give your guests at the reception? What about desserts?
A buffet! It’s a mix between Austrian and Japanese cuisine! Same with the desserts!
Gosh, I love Austrian desserts...
🥂- Who gave the first newlywed toast to you and your F/O? Did they give a good speech?
My little brother Kaoru! He really went all out!
🍰- What does you and your F/Os wedding cake look like? Give an explanation or show a picture.
Tumblr media
It‘s a chocolate cake with cacao mousse, except the one with the pink fondant around it. That one is red velvet with cherry blossom ganache in between. It’s really good!
🎥 - Who filmed you and your F/Os wedding? Did they take a lot of pictures too?
The other STARISH members and Nanami! It depended on the situation.
🏡- Where will you and your F/O settle down for a new home?
We live in Japan in a traditional home and don’t wanna move really. So, Japan is the answer.
🕰- How long have you and your F/O been together before getting married?
3 years! He had our anniversary last week as you know. ^-^
💍- Who picked out the rings? You, your F/O, or both of you?
We both did! It was important for us to be there together. Wedding rings should be approved by the other half!
Yeah, we actually didn’t even have difficulties to pick our pair out. Syo and I wanted to have some special yet not too over the top. The rings show that pretty well!
💍💐- Who’s your ring bearer and flower child?
We didn’t have a flower child at our wedding. Our “ring bearer” was Natsuki though, in a sense. He wanted to hold the rings until they get used in the ceremony and Jules was so sweet to allow him to do so. I, of course, didn’t object to it, because he is my best friend! ^-^
🍯🌙- Where are you and your F/O going for a special honeymoon spot?
We’re going on a 2-week-long cruise across the Mediterranean Sea! I’ve always wanted to be on a cruise and my amazing husband surprised me with this...
Isn’t he the sweetest??? T^T
👤- Who’s the best man and maid of honor at your wedding?
My Best Man is Kaoru! :D
And Natsuki is my Maid Man of Honor!
Medea’s Top 20 Animes of the Decade
Tumblr media
Hey all! Disappointed in some “best of” lists of this past decade? Well…prepared to be possibly disappointed some more because I’m doing one now! Here’s a top 20 list of my favorite animes that came out in the 2010’s. I seriously couldn’t do 10 this time due to how many awesome animes came out this decade. Unlike my anime superlative list, I’m going to be stricter here. Anything that aired in Japan before January 2010 is stricken from the list (which sucks because that means Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood & InuYasha: The Final Act are disqualified). And these are going to be MY favorites from this decade. Be aware that there will be popular animes I leave off the list due to my own personal opinions and the fact that some of them I have not watched yet. So I’m just going to tell you right now, don’t expect My Hero Academia, Hunter x Hunter, or Demon Slayer on this list because I have not watched any of that shit! Let’s get cracking!
Tumblr media
20. Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card (2018)
After nearly 20 years since the end of the first series, Cardcaptor Sakura returns with a sequel no one asked for and no one expected to come back. But it definitely brought back the nostalgia for those who grew up watching CCS. This story gives a continuation where Sakura is in middle school and ends up collecting a whole new set of mysterious cards. And the series is what you would expect with the cutesy feel whenever Sakura is with Li or it gets really intense when Sakura’s up against a really powerful card. While the ending leaves us on a bit of a cliffhanger with no continuation in sight, this series was one of the best reboots I’ve watched in recent years.
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll, FUNimation, & Hulu Coming soon to home video
Tumblr media
19. The Rising of the Shield Hero (2019)
This is my first (modern) Isekai and I gotta say I really enjoyed the story. Unlike other anime characters that travel to another world, the main character Naofumi is not praised as a savior nor put on a golden pedestal. Quite the opposite, this guy has to fight for even a shred of respect from anybody. Because after watching past protagonists like Miaka Yuuki, Kagome, and Kirito, that trope gets boring. Despite many of these episodes making me physically ill as I watched Naofumi being shit on by the other heroes and everybody else, it was great to watch this struggle with Naofumi to become a great shield hero.
P.S. Myne is still a raging cunt!
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll & FUNimation
Tumblr media
18. My Love Story!! (2015)
One of the BEST rom-com animes out there! The story of a gentle giant boy named Takeo falling in love with a sweet, petite girl named Yamato and their story as a couple. Yeah, the big difference between this anime and a bunch of other anime rom-coms is that Takeo and Yamato reveal their love for each other in episode 4 in a 24 episode series! By anime standards, that’s unheard of because most love stories want to wait until the finale for something like that. This anime is just a cute story of watching Takeo and Yamato bloom with their budding relationship. Yeah, I admit some of the stories can be a little boring. Sometimes the beginnings of romances have a slow-start before we get to the good stuff. But even when they’re doing little things, they’re just so cute to watch.
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll, HI-DIVE & Hulu Available for home video
Tumblr media
17. Durarara!! (2010, 2015-2016)
This story is a complete cluster-fuck, but I don’t care. The stories that come from this anime and the characters make this one of my favorites. Durarara follows the strange stories that happen around the town of Ikebukuro with a headless motorcycle rider, super-human strengthed men, an internet troll who loves to mess with humans, otakus, a mad scientist, a parasitic carrier, and gangs of different sorts. But if you would ask me what’s my favorite thing about Durarara (because there’s a lot of random things for anyone to choose), it would of course be any time Shizuo Heiwajima is on the screen. This guy is just pure rage in a bartender’s outfit. He’s able to casually pick up and throw a vending machine at a person, he can punch the clothes off a guy’s body, and even kick a mid-sized car down the street.
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll, Hulu & Netflix Available for home video
Tumblr media
16. Daily Lives of High School Boys (2012)
If you’re looking for something random and hilarious to watch, look no further with this one. Each episode has random segments, mostly featuring three boys, Tadakuni, Hidenori, and Yoshitake in some of the most absurd moments ever showcased in an anime. Just to name a few fun moments; being caught experimenting with women’s underwear, finding a clever way to kill a hornet (indirect kiss), intellectual talk with a cute girl, using your jacket as a soccer ball replacement, and how to unzip your fly without using your hands! That last one still confounds me. But the show also expands to other characters around school and town. I know this series is severely random to have a coherent plot, but sometimes I prefer randomness. And that’ll continue with the next entry!
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll Available for home video
Tumblr media
15. Nichijou (2011)
Yet another random segment anime (only this time with girls)! I know the official title is “My Ordinary Life”, but there is nothing ordinary about an anime where you have a six year old professor, a talking robot girl that was created by the six-year old professor, a talking black cat, high school girls capable of body-flipping police officers, a young boy who rides a goat to school, a high school girl capable of firing a bazooka, and a principal who fights a deer. That last one is just epic! If for no other reason to watch Nichijou, just watch the scene where the principal fights a deer! Much like Daily Lives of High School Boys, this series relies more on the random shenanigans of many of these characters (but mostly the main three girls, Mio, Yuuko, and Mai). It’s silly and fun! Check it out and give this anime a little love. Because there’s no way it’s getting a second season (Japan showed no love for this one)!
Available to watch on: FUNimation Available for home video
Tumblr media
14. ERASED (2016)
I don’t care what manga readers say, this was a fine anime, you anal-rententive fuck-wipes (soooo not sorry for that statement)! This murder-mystery captured my attention when it first aired. The story is about a man named Satoru who has this ability to go backwards in time (usually a few seconds or minutes) to prevent a tragedy from occurring. But after an incident involving his mother, he ends up going all the way back to his ten-year old body in 1988 in order to prevent a tragedy from his childhood. This included saving his classmate, Kayo from her premature demise. It was a catchy time-leaping mystery that would enthrall me week after week…up to a certain point. Yeah, you can already guess who the culprit was early on. But all the suspense leading up to this was still a great tale.
Available to watch on: Crunchyroll & Hulu Available for home video
Tumblr media
13. Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt (2010)
GAINAX, you wishy-washy, crazy-ass, can’t give a full conclusion to a story to save your life, leaving us on a decade-long cliffhanger bastards, YOU’VE DONE IT AGAIN!
So this bizarre-ass anime is about two bitch-angels kicked out of Heaven, named Panty and Stocking. One likes to fuck men and the other gorges herself on sweets! In order to get back into Heaven, they must exterminate ghosts with the help of a black priest named Garterbelt, a fanboy named Briefs, and an Invader Zim knock-off named Chuck. And did I mention Panty and Stocking use their own lingere as weapons to take down ghosts? This story is balls-to-the-wall insane! And it gets crazier when you pop in the English dub! Dick jokes, fart jokes, and a whole lot of fucks! As any superhero show will do, this anime does stay to the villain of the episode trope with a few leeways here and there. This included a segment dedicated to the late Satoshi Kon and a music video. All of this leading to an ending NO ONE expected to happen leaving us on a cliffhanger that is now going on 10 years. Regardless, this absurdity in a thong is a treasure to behold. I would also advise not doing a drinking game whenever one of them says “Fuck”. You’d be dead by the end of the first episode!
12. Attack on Titan (2013, 2017-2019)
*singing incoherent Japanese*
YEAGER!!!
Get ready to get hooked on two of the catchiest opening themes of all time! I thought it was just about a young boy taking revenge on a race of titans for the death of his mother. No one expected there to be a twisted, messed-up origin to the titan race where the main character is connected to everything! That’s all my messy thoughts coming out after witnessing the climax portion. As for the rest of you, Eren Yeager’s world is turned upside-down when the town he lived in is demolished by titans. As a result, the entire town is demolished and left for dead and Eren watched as his mother is eaten by a titan. Eren ends up joining the Survey Corps along with his friends Armin and Mikasa to take down titans and prevent another town to suffer the same fate as Eren’s home.
Going into this anime, I SERIOUSLY thought this was going to be a comedy. You would too if you were going off of all the memes that emerged in 2013. But this anime takes a sharp left turn when Eren discovers a horrifying secret involving his own body. After that, this lead to more unbelievable discoveries involving people we all initially thought was the supporting cast. And this is as cryptic as I can be without delving into severe spoilers. The only way to get my meaning is if you watch this series. It’s just…WOW!
11. Kill la Kill (2013-2014)
A girl with a giant pair of scissors picking a fight with the main bitch at school, all the while wearing a sailor suit that talks to you! That is the balls-to-the-wall insanity Studio Trigger gives you in a show like this. Ryuko Matoi enrolls in Honnouji Academy in search of the person who murdered her father. There, she comes face-to-face with the potential murderer, Satsuki Kiryuin. Satsuki rules over Honnouji as she has a special uniform capable of giving her super-human strength. But what Satsuki doesn’t know is that Ryuko is about to get a special uniform to give her that as well. A talking sailor uniform named Senketsu helps Ryuko in her journey of finding her father’s murderer. Yeah, this series goes all-out with the special powers brought on by certain clothing. Then again, it’s Japan and fanservice is a must in at least 75% of animes! I mean, there are moments where Senketsu gets skimpier on Ryuko, not leaving much to the imagination. As absurdly off the wall this anime was, I enjoyed every frame of it and it’s easily one of Studio Trigger’s best works.
10. Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma (2015-2019)
You’d think with my picky-ass, I would have never watched an anime about cooking (and if my family is reading this, close this page now and play a wholesome game of shutting your gobs). But Food Wars never fails to increase my appetite. Yukihira Soma ends up in Japan’s most elite cooking school (with a 10% graduation rate) where he finds himself up against Japan’s and even the world’s greatest up and coming chefs. And every now and then, he ends up having to go up against one of these chefs in a cook-off known as a Shokugeki. If it wasn’t for the food orgasms, I would easily tell my cooking-show obsessed family members to watch this. I know no normal person would ever strip off all their clothes and have a raging orgasm when eating delicious food. But hey, it’s Japan! Gotta stick in fanservice somewhere! With inventive ways to spice up a regular dish, I may one day broaden my taste-buds into more exotic food-stuffs. Just, keep the peanut-butter squid away from me.
09. Your Lie in April (2014-2015)
Grab your tissues, children. We follow Kousei Arima as he regains his ability and passion for playing the piano with the thanks of new-found friend Kaori. What can I say about an anime that’s so beautifully animated with likeable characters and music to die for? OHHH…I shouldn’t have said that last thing! Yeah, the main character Kousei goes through quite a bit in his life dealing with the aftermath of his mother’s death and having to relive seeing someone he cares about die the same way. There’s just so much you wish would happen with these characters and watch as it’s dashed away during a Chopin piece. OHHH…I did it again! Well folks, if you’re into tear-bait and classical music, definitely watch Your Lie in April!
08. The Promised Neverland (2019)
One of the newest entries with one of the most shocking first episodes in recent history! I know in the past decade we got a lot of first episode hookers like Attack on Titan, but if you came in this blind-folded, get ready for a trip. We follow orphan children Emma, Ray, and Norman as they plan to escape their home before they become food for hungry demons. In a weird way, this anime is almost like the 2000 film Chicken Run. I know I’m not the first person to think that up, but yeah, gotta say it here. This was one of my favorite animes of this year and I was hooked week by week with what was going to happen next. It got so intense that immediately after the series ended, I picked up the manga to find out what happens next. And let me tell you, it gets more insane after the events of episode 12. But one thing that always astounded me was watching all of these kids plot an escape so elaborate when all of them range from ages 6-12.
07. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (2017)
What would you do if you opened the door one morning and found a dragon standing outside? Not just that but what would you do if you were living with more than one dragon and you now find yourself hanging around other dragons?! Kobayashi’s world changes for the better as she meets a dragon (named Tohru) that loves her so much that she would happily become her maid. And given the stigma for eons between humans and dragons, this series we see cute interactions with humans and dragons. Up to a point that it feels like all these characters are becoming family! There’s a dragon named Fafnir who finds humans horrible people, but ends up changing for the better when he finds himself hanging with a human that plays video games and creates manga. But I’m always so drawn to the relationship of Tohru and Kobayashi. Kobayashi was never really close to her family and when she moved away she mostly spends her nights drinking alone. But once Tohru and Kanna move in, it’s always a fun day with their cute shenanigans. It’s definitely brought Kobayashi out of her shell and gave her a family of dragons to live with.
And there’s this cute little dragon named Kanna! She’s so cute and adorable! Look at her nom at just everything she eats. She’s so adorable! Who’s a cute wittle dragon? Yes you are! Yes you are!
As a final note in this particular entry, I want to mention one particular member of the staff. Yasuhiro Takemoto! This man was the director for Miss Kobayashi, as well as many other animes from Kyoto Animation and I feel the need to thank this man for all the hard work he had done. I’m thankful for all of your work in the anime community and we miss you.
06. Pokemon XY (2013-2016)
It might be cheating a bit to put a Pokemon series on this list since they’ve been around since 1997. But it’s not a continuous shot like Detective Conan and One Piece, so I’m counting the XY arc for this list. Even though this series didn’t show me my favorite character and it gave me a shipping that’s worse than Herpes (with a cult for that ship that’s on par with MAGA), this was one of the best arcs to the Pokemon series. And I was excited for this series when it first came out because with the introduction of Mega Evolution, I was hoping for Ash to delve into that. While Ash wasn’t the one using Mega Evolutions, we did see him grow more through a synchronization method with Greninja that brought about so much in terms of battling. Just to name a few awesome moments with these two, he took down an iceburg pokemon, went toe-to-toe with a champion, and even made it all the way to the finals of the Pokemon League. Now did he win that league? That’s not important! What is important is that these were some of the best moments this series had to offer.
But it wasn’t just Ash we followed, but an anime-only character introduced named Alain as we followed his journey to becoming stronger through Mega Evolution. It felt risky following a different person for 5 or more episodes (without mentioning Ash), but it was all worth it when we came to the climax of the series when Team Flare came from the shadows. Listen guys, I know Pokemon has given some disappointing seasons before (especially the arc prior to XY), but if there’s any season you should watch, it’s definitely this one.
Also, Rica Matsumoto sings this one song called XYZ. I don’t know if you all have heard this song, but I think you should. It’s so bad ass and always pops up in some of Ash’s best battles in this series…in the Japanese version! I love it so much that I always feel the need to bring up XYZ whenever I talk about this arc.
05. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011)
I will always be a sucker for magical girl animes. Especially since Sailor Moon was the very first anime I watched fully! But Madoka Magica was…different and edgier. The premise is that a cute, white animal asks you to form a contract with it so you can become a magical girl. Magical girls defeat witches that cause havoc! Better read the fine-print on the contract ladies, because what the little rat doesn’t tell you is that you eventually become a witch yourself and will end up dying a horrible death, thus repeating the cycle. This anime would always leave me in a state of awe when watching it, whether it was the shocking deaths or the clever animation used when a witch emerges. But when you’ve got Shaft Studios animating this, expect some trippy moments. I think it’s because episode 3 was a big turning point that many of us were caught off guard by what happened and were scared of what happens next. Although thanks to Madoka, many other magical girl animes are following down the same path and trying to make it edgier. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I gotta say Madoka has definitely set the bar on edgy magical girl shows.
04. Violet Evergarden (2018)
Prior to this anime’s release, Kyoto Animation had a reputation for putting out anime that was geared to the “moe” genre. But with recent releases of A Silent Voice, Miss Kobayashi, and Violet Evergarden, their style has evolved into something I can’t describe in just one sentence. This anime is just beautiful to look at. The animation is just stunning, look at it. Now, I was a bit turned-off by the main character of this series, Violet. First of all, she literally looks like Saber from the Fate series and has arms that rival Ed Elric of FMA. Secondly, her almost robotic personality really turned me off. But it wasn’t until later in the series where we watch her interact with the people she was helping in each episode that made me truly appreciate what she’s doing.
Violet was once used as a tool for war and would always obey her commanding officer. But once the war was over, she found herself as an “Auto Memories Doll” where she’s writing letters people want to send to someone. Many of these episodes, we watch her see the world outside of the war and hell she was put through in her past. Her words were able to bring people together, heal two fighting nations, bring a family closer together, give closure to a grieving family member, and so much more. Add to that, this series gave out one of the most heart-breaking episodes I’ve ever watched in anime. It made me ugly-cry and that rarely happens! Not just me, but litereally everyone who ever watched this episode, but also Violet herself. This episode (that’s episode 10) was like the first time where she felt actual human emotions for anyone other than the person she once loved. This episode felt like a turning point in how I felt about Violet as well as the show in general.
I feel I have to say a little more on this entry. This anime is without a doubt, the most beautifully animated anime of this entire decade (despite what OTHERS have to say). And it couldn’t have gotten that way without the talented folks at Kyoto Animation. I can’t express enough how much I’m blown away by this series. Only now when I think about it, I get horribly depresssed due to the recent tragedy that struck KyoAni. Only now, do I appreciate all the hard work to put this masterpiece into action. And I wish it didn’t take me until a tragedy to watch this anime. But I’m glad I was able to watch Violet Evergarden. And I wish for you all to take the time to do the same!
03. Assassination Classroom (2015-2016)
Stand. Bow. Kill your sensei! Middle school students being trained by professional assassins to take down a yellow-tentacled monster (who is also their teacher)! These students must assassinate their teacher within one year, otherwise the world will blow up. Now I had my reservations watching a cast this big! I mean, we’re watching an entire 28-person class try to shoot their teacher. Thankfully, I didn’t grow to be annoyed by the concept like with Negima. I loved nearly all of the students and remembered many of them. One of the biggest drawing points with me is that, all of these students were seen as the ones to give up on. They were in the lowest-level class where school, family, and society have just given up on these children. Being in a much similar situation in middle school, I can relate. That’s why when I saw someone like Koro-sensei teach these kids so much more in the world of academics, it made me happy to see these kids have someone to look up to. Many of these episodes were fun to watch. Koro-sensei is a laugh-riot sometimes when the class has to do an activity together. Add to that, one of the hardest to watch goodbyes in recent history. For a good laugh and a good cry, Assassination Classroom is the way to go.
02. Yuri on Ice!!! (2016)
AAAAAAHHHHHHH! *random screeching noises*
Why yes I love this series! It is so beautiful. I wish to see more of this in the future. I would like for Viktor to have Yuri’s babies. Don’t at me! I didn’t expect this series to give the female viewers an actual loving relationship between two of the main male characters. But halfway into the series, we get the kiss that cemented the deal. So besides the gay relationship, we’ve also got a beautiful soundtrack, animation that’s stunningly gorgeous, a story about an underdog working his way to receive a gold medal with the help of his hot, Russian coach…God, I just love this anime!
I’m a sucker for a root for the underdog story. And Yuri Katsuki definitely fits that description! Before Viktor came along, he was coming off of a humiliating defeat at a previous competition where he came in dead-last. But throughout the series, we watch Viktor mold Yuri into something audience members have overlooked in this boy. Viktor taught Yuri what love really is in more ways than one. But Yuri isn’t a total zero-to-hero in a span of 12 episodes, but at times he does come damn-near close. Every week, I’m amazed at how much Studio MAPPA put so much effort into this. While the quality did take a slight dip in some of the final episodes, so much has happened before that I’m willing to let that go. Watch Yuri attempt at making history with Yuri on Ice.
And now, #1…oh, you should already know what it is by now. One of my favorite animes came back with the vengeance in 2019 that no other anime can touch it. Rightfully so! You know it, I know it, let’s get it over with! So say it with me now, three, two, one…
Tumblr media
01. Fruits Basket: 1st Season (2019)
Thank you! Just…thank you! In a time where I hate reboots, this one was handled with the utmost care. What can I say about this anime that everyone else hasn’t said already? This anime is like warm soup on a cold day. The nice pick-me-up when you had a shitty day on the job! That beautiful rainbow you see after a rain shower!
Coming upon a family with a terrible secret, there’s much hesitation on who (if any) can be let in without being hurt. Tohru Honda accidentally learned of the Sohma family secret, where if one of them is hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they’re turned into an animal from the Chimese Zodiac. These people have had to live with this stigma their entire lives. Because of this, relationships are put in turmoil, obtaining friends was damn-near impossible, and everyone has to be on a constant state of worry in case their secret comes out. But Tohru loves and accepts everyone, no matter what. In many of these episodes, we see Tohru reach out to the members of the Sohma family to tell them that she sees the good in them and that they are loved. To reach out to the hurt, silent tiger, Kisa! To reach out to the mentally-scarred rat, Yuki! To reach out to the heart-broken dragon, Hatori! And to give a hug to Momiji…when his momma won’t!
All of these individual stories always gets to me! Even re-told, these stories have improved 100%! And in some cases like Ritsu’s story, done better than the original! I watched the original story God-knows how many times! But with the remake, I found myself re-watching random episodes in my off-time when I should be watching something else. I always have to go back to watching everything from this series. From the good and the sad! From the ultra-laughable moments, to the jaw-dropping moments! In a time where many of us yearn to be accepted for who we are, an anime like this feels absolutely necessary. I know it might be biased of me to pick something from this year and cheating a bit considering at the beginning of the decade I was heavily into the original series. Regardless, this is still my pick for Best Anime of the 2010’s.
Seiyuu Challenge (#1+2): Favourite and Least Favourite Male Seiyuu
Least Favourite?
I’ll start by saying that I don’t have a least favourite. I just have a lot of seiyuu that I don’t like as much as the rest of you like. Those ones will be revealed in question [blank].
Favourite?
We’re going to be doing this in the form of a top fifteen list.
I’m going to try to put a “keep reading” line because this is SUPER DUPER LONG. This took me quite a while to complete, and I’m too lazy to proofread, so whatever happens happens.
Honourable Mentions:
Takehito Koyasu
Tumblr media
(the hate for him transcends animation; no gif of Takehito Koyasu on Tumblr)
Here’s to the guy who almost always gets cast as the villain. Seriously, his voice suits it too well. He even looks like an action-movie villain in real life. Some people are just born with a resting villain face I guess. But he’s not just that, he has played a nun, Deadpool (for Japanese dubs), and Excalibur from Soul Eater. All his other roles are mostly villainous stuff though in things like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Gintama, Re:Zero, and others. I still need to watch a lot more of his stuff. He is the voice behind the infamous Dio. I think that’s enough to get him onto this list.
Roles | Singing
Kenichi Suzumura
Tumblr media
(Maaya Sakamoto and Kenichi Suzumura would make a god-tier kid)
I know him best for playing Okita from Gintama. Okita is a great character though who I know will get a lot of development moving forward in Gintama. He also surprised me in Osomatsu-san since he was responsible for the “SHEEEEEEH”. He won an award for that too. Hikaru from Ouran Host Club was a role that surprised me a little because he wasn’t expected to be a love interest from my perspective. Speaking of love interest, I may be a bit bias towards him because he has a really cute relationship with one of my favourite seiyuu Maaya Sakamoto. They also acted in the Kara no Kyoukai franchise together where they took on the two main characters. If it wasn’t for that movie’s timeline (eight movies, all out of order), I might’ve finished it. I love his work in Honeyworks. He’s good at singing, and I plan on watching more of his stuff in the future (especially D. Grayman)!
Roles | Singing | The Full 1080p “SHEEEH” Experience
Toshiyuki Toyonaga
Tumblr media
(The news that he had a child surfaced a while ago. Congrats to him!)
He just won the best lead actor award at the Seiyuu Awards a few months ago for his performance in Yuri On Ice, and he fully deserves it. He’s a talented musician, and he has such a soft-toned voice at times that can go to really deep in a matter of seconds. I haven’t seen him in shows like Free, SAO, Tokyo Ghoul Root A, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Karneval, or Code: Breaker, but I have seen him in Yuri on Ice where he exceeded my expectations and definitely deserved that award (his speech was great too). He played Mikado who was a fun unexpectedly interesting character  in Durarara, he shocked me in Zetsuen no Tempest where he Mahiro Fuwa who I didn’t like, he had an appearance in Bungou Stray Dogs as Tanizaki, he was Takeru in Kamigami no Asobi, and I really liked his role in Kimi to Boku as Shun Matsuoka (I really liked that anime in general).
Roles | Singing | Bonus: Seiyuu Award Speech, “Day You Laugh” Durarara OP, Zetsuen no Tempest Duet (ft. Kouki Uchiyama)
Daisuke Ono
Tumblr media
(He looks like he forgot the rest of his lines)
He either gets those roles like Sebastian from Black Butler where he’s smooth and charismatic, or he gets those roles like Shizuo from Durarara where he’s the rugged thug. He is the fifth sextuplet in the notorious Osomatsu-san. Jyushimatsu is the loudest of the six, but he has the best episode in the entire show. If I remember correctly, I think it’s the second half of episode nine (I watched this a year ago). He has his own little episode where he falls in love, and it was nice to watch. My favourite roles from him personally are Sinbad from Magi, Shizuo from Durarara, and Handa from Barakamon. All of those anime were really enjoyable, and my favourites wouldn’t be the same without his voice.
Roles | Singing | Bonus: Kokkuri, “When you’re left with everyone’s bill” (Seiyuu Event Subbed), Barakamon (Highlights), Magi (Sinbad Highlights)
Ryouhei Kimura
Tumblr media
After watching Silver Spoon and Kids on the Slope, I just had to include him here. I first knew Ryouhei Kimura for playing Judar from Magi, and even though he did well playing the heavy eyeshadow magi, when he takes the spotlight as a really well-developed character, it makes it that much better. After watching him in shows like Gekkan Shoujo, Akame Ga Kill, Tokyo Ravens, Kimi to Boku, Grand Blue, that BNHA OVA with the zombies, I can say that he earned the spot on his list.
Roles | Singing | Silver Spoon clip (WARNING: CONTAINS COW BIRTH)
Miyu Irino
Tumblr media
(This whole thing is quite extra and overdramatic, isn’t it?)
His role in A Silent Voice left me shocked. Saori Hayami and his performance blew my expectations. They are both really talented individuals, and that movie was packed with feels. Even though I like Saori better, I think he deserves a place here. Sugawara from Haikyuu reminds me of a mom, and I think that’s kind of common. He gives the character a kindhearted voice (with a few exceptional moments). Todomatsu is another sextuplet in Osomatsu. I mention this show often because it’s really crazy. I can’t say I would recommend it to everyone, but the seiyuu definitely make the show funny at times. Ritsu Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100 is a character that is one of my favourite in the show because he is such a relatable person who just gets a little lost at times. And I’ve got to say that Miyu portrayed him well. I enjoyed that show a lot. Jintan from Anohana continues to be a show that I remember because it gave me the feels. I won’t get deeper into that because of spoilers and digging up old wounds and feels. But to end on a lighter note, if you like Osomatsu, I recommend checking out Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou because it has a hilarious cast in a bunch of sketches that can be quite funny.
Roles | Singing | Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou “RPG Quest”, Koe no Katachi SPOILERS
Jun Fukuyama
Tumblr media
(You can see the moment the failure seeps his soul)
Koro-sensei and Lelouch would not be the same without him. He has given these two characters life. He was Souta Takanashi in Working!!, Ichimatsu from Osomatsu, Shinra from Durarara, Yukio from Blue Exorcist, and King from The Seven Deadly Sins. I recently watched him as the Dark Flame Master-- I mean Yuuta Togashi. The way his voice went from Dark Flame Master to Yuuta was funny even if it wasn’t realistic for a first-year high schooler. Same goes for Nura Rise of the Yokai Clan (which I haven’t finished). Bundo from Deadman Wonderland was fun to watch since he was a twist that I probably should’ve seen coming. Kassim from Magi is one character that I will never forget from him though because that backstory was sad, but his character along with Yuki Kaji’s performance really laid out one of the most exciting parts of season one of Magi.
Roles | Singing Compilation | Ichimatsu Compilation (Season One), Koro Sensei’s Weak Points
Satoshi Hino
Tumblr media
I first saw him as Sai in Naruto, but since then, he has been in so many anime that I’ve seen as all types of characters. He’s Kineshi Hairo in Saiki, Ash Landers in Black Butler, Momonga in Overlord, Emil in Yuri On Ice, Akito Takagi in Bakuman, Daichi in Haikyuu, Shinku from Yowamushi Pedal, and the renowned Tomoda from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (the real MVP and hero we do not deserve). But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’m looking forward to watching him as Kamui in Gintama.
Roles | Singing
Top Fifteen
15. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka
Tumblr media
Despite being one of the most sought-after harem seiyuu, I can say that I don’t watch any of those. I haven’t watched The Pet Girl of Sakurasou or Food Wars or that Dungeon anime. I watched him as Sora in No Game No Life, but I didn’t like that anime. I put him on this list because of his smaller roles that I see him on. Titus from Magi is a perfect example. He may not get the most screen time, but when he’s on, he does a wonderful job playing his characters. His range is outstanding from playing the infamous Kirito to a crazy monster to an alleyway cat that got stuck (if you’re curious, watch Saiki). He also made me laugh quite a bit as Lubbock from Akame Ga Kill. Ah, that anime is just a tragedy. But speaking of tragedy, he apparently has a tough time talking to the people he works with which I relate to. Especially when he does harems (which have a lot of girls), you really can’t blame him. Plus, they make fun of him too.
Roles (This one is a little longer, but it includes extras and everything) | Singing
14. Toshiyuki Morikawa
Tumblr media
I first saw him as Minato in Naruto, but I didn’t realize how prolific he was until I watched him play a wide range of characters from the villain Boro in One Punch Man to the crazy priest Azuma in Deadman Wonderland. He has such a calm and soothing voice too. This is especially apparent in Magi where he plays Ugo. He has so many miscellaneous characters in so many anime, and I just like his voice in general.
13. Akira Ishida
Tumblr media
(This is almost the only gif??)
He has said that he turns down a lot of roles now, but he has still done so many. He is Katsura in Gintama. That in itself is enough to land him on this list. Katsura is one of my favourite characters in Gintama. Name a more iconic duo than him and Elizabeth. Exactly, it’s impossible. He’s also Gaara from Naruto which is where I first saw him. Yunan from Magi is a polar opposite. He’s such a mysterious kind soul. He has been in Danganronpa, the Fate series, Mirai Nikki, Fairy Tail, Kekkai Sensen, Parasyte, Natsume’s Book of Friends, Evangelion, and so many other shows. He’s been around since the 80s, so it’s really no surprise that he is in so many shows. His voice is so versatile that it’s almost scary. He inspired Aoi Shouta to become a seiyuu too because he was a “beautiful woman with a beautiful voice”.
Roles | Bonus: One Man, Seven Voices, Katsura Raps, Trivia
12. Sakurai Takahiro
Tumblr media
He plays too many characters to count, and like Akira Ishida and Satoshi Hino, he has been around for a long time. He has characters that I’ve hated, loved, and wanted to “accidentally” push onto the road for them to get hit by a truck. I’ve watched him as the leader of Osomatsu-san who is just too insane for works, Fitzgerald from Bungou Stray Dogs who probably doesn’t know how it feels to be broke, Suzaku from Code Geass who I liked and hated at the same time, Yukiatsu from Anohana who you can’t help but pity, Jafar in Magi ho made me laugh lots, Arataka from Mob Psycho 100 who made me laugh so much with his antics, and Sakurai from (one of my more recently finished anime) Net-juu no Susume. He’s also kind of funny to watch in Ad-Live, but there aren’t any clips of that.
Roles | Singing | Bonus: Cringy Pick-up Lines, Anohana Festival, Osomatsu
11. Kensho Ono
Tumblr media
I first saw him as Hakuryuu from Magi where he gave a great performance. He’s a talented singer as well as a stage actor. But besides Magi, I’ve liked his role in A Silent Voice where he plays Tomohiro (who is just such a precious character). His role as Akutagawa in Bungou Stray Dogs eventually did grow on me as I got used to him being the edgy, scarcely eyebrowed Port Mafia member. But one of the most standout characters I’ve watched from him (besides Hakuryuu and Akutagawa) is Arata Kaizaki from ReLife. He seems like a useless NEET that couldn’t stand the world at first, but then we find out that he’s a useless NEET who couldn’t handle the really tough world. But in all seriousness, he’s a character that seems really bland at first, and now that I’ve finished it, I can say that he gets some development that makes you realize that he might be that same average guy, but the plot and the people surrounding him make things really interesting. Kensho Ono is also a part of Ad-Live.
Roles | Singing | ReLife Clip, Magi Clip
10. Kaito Ishikawa
Tumblr media
(I just read a fake article about how he was attacked with shuriken during a home invasion. Fake articles are wild.)
I know Kaito Ishikawa for playing characters in a lot of new shows. A lot of the roles are the ones that I haven’t watched, and some roles were a miss because the anime was a miss (Tokyo Ravens wasn’t excruciatingly bad, but even with the good cast, they couldn’t save a lot of its flaws.) Some people didn’t like Zankyou no Terror, but I still enjoy it. The performances were quite strong even with the cringy “Engrish”, and the music was phenomenal. His portrayal of the colder part of the duo “Sphinx” was one of the highlights of the show. Kouto from Noragami didn’t get too much of a chance to show what he’s truly capable of (since they ended it when his role was becoming more apparent). And even though his time on Bungou Stray Dogs was short, I certainly enjoyed the time that we got to see his character Rokuzou. Kageyama from Haikyuu is a great main character from him. He’s such good friends with Hinata’s seiyuu Ayumu Murase, and he’s so involved in the My Hero Academia cast as Iida Tenya (as we’ve seen from many of the highlights of the cast). His role as Iida was really good especially during the Hero Killer arc. His role as Genos had me laughing a lot of the time even though it’s ironic because he was a very stiff serious character. I hope to see him a lot more in the future.
9. Junichi Suwabe
Tumblr media
(I relate to this too much because I don’t know where I am unless I’m inside my house)
His role as Aizawa-sensei made him too relatable. I’ve seen several pictures of him cosplaying as his characters which I have massive respect for. His role as Viktor in Yuri On Ice has probably wooed a lot of fangirls, but what stands out the most for me (besides Aizawa) is his role as Odasaku in Bungou Stray Dogs. That performance left me shaken up (especially from the storyline), and I’m sure a lot of Bungou Stray Dogs fans feel the same way. That scream near the end of the arc sent chills. He is also in a bunch of other things that I haven’t watched from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Kuroko no Basket, Black Butler, Fate, Food Wars, Nana, Natsume’s Book of Friends, Space Dandy, and a few others. I have watched him in some supporting roles like Jamil from Magi (that was a great three episodes where he appeared as a spoiled rich guy), Jae-ha from Akatsuki no Yona, Freed from Fairy Tail, Juuzou from Danganronpa, and Junichi (yes, Junichi) from Sakamichi no Apollon. That was rollercoaster of a role, but his singing was so good.
8. Tomakazu Sugita
Tumblr media
You would think that with a voice like that he would be voicing a lot more serious characters. I guess that’s because I first watched him as Karasuma in Assassination Classroom. In reality, he’s a real jokester (especially when around Yuuichi Nakamura). His role in Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou was funny. It was thirteen episodes of craziness, and it features many of the regulars from Gintama. Speaking of Gintama, the reason why he’s on this part of the list is quite simple. Gintoki. If you’ve watched Gintama, you’d know that Gintoki is such a vibrant character with so much dick jokes and screaming that you really can’t imagine anyone else playing him. I say this as a compliment when I say that he yells just as much as Nobuhiko Okamoto. Just watching Gintama mentally strains your vocal cords.
Roles | Singing | Bonus: “Voice Acting Meme”, Gintoki Exclusive, Yukana helping out Sugita, Sugita x Nakamura (Seiyuu’s Little Forest)
7. Mamoru Miyano
Tumblr media
I know everyone knows him for voicing Light from Death Note, but I haven’t watched that anime (don’t judge me, please). His evil laugh was good though. Speaking of other characters I haven’t watched from him, there’s also Rin Matsuoka from Free, Kiba from Wolf’s Rain, Lucifer from Hunter x Hunter, or Konoha from Mekakucity Actors. There’s probably a bunch more too, but let’s get to the stuff that I have seen. He has been around for so long, and his best characters are the types that appear goofy on the surface but have inner anguish and more depth to their personality. Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs is such a character, and he’s the main reason why he’s high on this list. Dazai is such a funny weirdo. Kida Masaomi from Durarara is kind of like Dazai in an odd way too, and I don’t just mean his voice. He has humour that seems to hide something... or maybe that’s just me. Okabe from Steins;Gate (even though I haven’t watched that anime in its entirety) and Ling Yao also seems to keep up this trend. Shuu Tsukiyama from Tokyo Ghoul is just crazy though. It was fun to watch though. He brings so much fun to the characters, yet when they finally show a more vulnerable side to themselves, he still portrays them well. Not to mention, he has a great sense of humour and an awesome singing voice.
6. Hiroshi Kamiya
Tumblr media
He’s way too easy to identify. Honestly, the first role I remember him for is probably Otonashi from Angel Beats. That gave me a bit of feels too, so I had to mention that. Besides that, he has had too many other notable roles, but I’ll try to mention a few supporting roles: Takeda from Haikyuu, Mephisto from Blue Exorcist, Araragi from Monogatari, and Ranpo Edogawa from Bungou Stray Dogs. Some roles I want to expand on are Natsume from Natsume’s Book of Friends. His chemistry with Kazuhiko Inoue is great, and they make for such an entertaining show. Izaya from Durarara is insane and neurotic, but he seems like a character with so many underlying insecurities. I haven’t watched the full series (only the first two seasons), but I still remember them (whether it’s because I hate him or not). Levi is a badass that I’m sure a lot of people know from Attack on Titan. He’s proof that short guys like me have a chance. Choromatsu is just crazy. He’s the most productive out of his siblings, but that’s like saying he’s the tallest among dwarves (shout-out to Veronica Sawyer for that quote). With that being said, my best role from him is easily Yato from Noragami. The cast of Noragami is strong, and he is the protagonist. He has so many funny moments and maybe serious ones as well. I could go on all day how he does a good job voicing Yato, but I’ll just leave it at that.
5. Yuuki Kaji
Tumblr media
He truly does have the voice of a main character. Sometimes his voice is a bit too recognizable for me, and sometimes I think that he does get some roles that don’t fit him as well as I’d like, but I think that’s more up to the casting director than Yuki Kaji. I didn’t like his portrayal in Ao Haru Ride and found it really cringy. A lot of the other anime I don’t like him in is because I don’t like the anime in general. Diabolik Lovers, Guilty Crown, and High School DxD are a few examples of that. Besides that, he has had many outstanding performances. His roles as Takami from Deadman Wonderland and Ayato Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul were okay. Eren from Attack on Titan which just from the clips I watched were epic and emotional. The amount of strain you can feel for his vocal cords (especially considering that he takes hours for a single episode). Yukine from Noragami was not liked by many at the beginning, but I actually really liked this character, and he portrayed his hardship really well. Todoroki from My Hero Academia sounds like a complete badass. And even though he’s really stoic, he had made me laugh as the “Hand-crusher”. Sonic from One Punch Man made me laugh a few times (RIP his nuts). Shion was great, and his chemistry with Nezumi (Hosoya Yoshimasa) is almost touching. When he got bitten by the wasp, I felt bad for him. This anime does not get the credit it deserves as a nice post-apocalyptic anime). But above all, my favourite role is Alibaba from Magi. I read the manga (slowly but still), and I still hear him doing Alibaba’s voice. He nails the character’s strength, goofiness, positivity, and his overall personality. I’m looking forward to watching Kouichi from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Soramaru from Donten ni Warau.
4. Yuuichi Nakamura
Tumblr media
Okay, so maybe he has had a few questionable roles that I won’t bring up, but we’re going to ignore those for now. I first saw him playing Gray from Fairy Tail, but I later saw him portraying Nozaki from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun which made me laugh more than it should have. I haven’t watched Clannad yet (partially because I still want my soul intact), but from the funny clips I’ve seen, he certainly does a good job playing Tomoya. Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Sanada from Kimi ni Todoke (who I relate to on a personal level because names just don’t stick in my mind), Ren Kouen, and that dude on a bike from One Punch Man are his other notable roles I’ve seen in the past. But for the most recent ones I’ve seen, Sweetness and Lightning and Poco Udon’s World are two anime that I just finished. They are both very similar, and they bring out his fatherly side which he even said himself cleanses his soul a little. Sure, he has a lot of not-so-family-friendly-or-morally-right-roles, but he also has a lot of good ones too. A lot of these recently watched shows have given me a lot more respect for him too. I actually watched his full Ad-Live performance (only one of them since he has been a part of a bunch), and the fact that he was able to put up with the costumes, ridiculous lines, and everything else also brought him into a new light. Seriously, he was stuck acting as a moving truck guy who’s a robot.
3. Kouki Uchiyama
Tumblr media
Let’s just skip Raku from Nisekoi. I didn’t like it. But onto the good roles. Hiroshi from Barakamon is a supporting character who doesn’t get a whole lot of screen time, but when he does, he certainly provides a lot of laughs. Tsukishima from Haikyuu is a character to rival the king of the court himself. Yuri(o) from Yuri on Ice is so edgy and butthurt all the time. He’s a salty ballerina, and his fans are supposedly very motherly which is fitting since he’s going through teenage angst. Takumi from Anthem of the Heart is a role I wasn’t expecting to like, but he actually kind of pulled it off. Shout-out to Hosoya for telling him about the movie! Gin from Hotarubi no Mori e is a role that brought me feels. If you haven’t watched it, you really should. Akira from Devilman: Crybaby is a role that was too intense for me to get through. It was an extremely demanding role which is kind of funny because he thought he was going to end up as Ryo. Tomura Shigaraki from My Hero Academia (I call him “The Man Who Needs a Hand”) is another one of my favourite roles from him because he has such a creepy aura thanks to character design and his voice. Soul from Soul Eater (who I like despite not being original). I really want to see more roles from him (preferably edgy).
Roles | Singing: Honeyworks (Vocaloid cover ft. Nobunaga Shimazaki), Zetsuen no Tempest Insert Song (ft. Toshiyuki Toyonaga) | Bonus: Yurio “HAAAA” Compilation, Horror Movies (ft. Ryouhei Kimura and Nobuhiko Okamoto)
2. Yoshimasa Hosoya
Tumblr media
Some people are just not like the people they portray on-screen. Number two and one are just like that. Here, we have a guy who usually plays brash characters actually being a timid softy whose backbone seems to be made of silly putty. I’m going to try to name a few of his roles that I’ve liked without drowning this whole post. Tokoyami from My Hero Academia whose quiet darkness I really respect especially with these new episodes. We need to see more of him! Asahi from Haikyuu who is the closest to him personality-wise that we will ever see. Daiki from Anthem of the Heart whose ending shocked me. Masmur from Magi who’s an underrated character. Braun from Attack on Titan who I know is a titan, and that shouldn’t count as a spoiler because everyone knows that by now. Saiki from WWW.Working whose his English wasn’t as bad as some shows. Seriously, Hosoya took an exam for English proficiency. He’s not that bad. In terms of outstanding roles, Nezumi from No.6 who is one of my favourite openly gay characters. He’s a badass, and along with Shion, they are an iconic duo in an anime that I found really enjoyable. Kunikida Doppo from Bungou Stray Dogs is the Armed Detective Agency’s soccer mom. He is responsible, keeps his ideals in check, and deserves happiness and a nap.
1. Nobuhiko Okamoto
Tumblr media
This is a bit of an odd choice comparing to the usual popularity polls, but hear me out. This dude has range. He shares my love for sweets and chocolate. He does all kinds of crazy characters. He can voice the angry Katsuki Bakugou from My Hero Academia whose screams a lot. Let’s be real, he is not what we expected when we heard “Hero”. Some of his scenes can send chills down spines. The charismatic Karma from Assassination Classroom is another kind of crazy. He is quite popular in the series, and he has this personality that makes people scared and allured by him. Even in an anime I didn’t like, Juuni Taisen, he did an amazing job portraying the flamboyant crazy Usagi who only kills in fabulous stilettos, suspenders, and bunny ears. He voiced the best version of Obi in Akagami no Shirayuki with his laid-back attitude and confidence. I guess that’s why he’s cast for Otome games? Anyway, Obi was probably my favourite character from that anime, and he was just such a likeable dork who’s going to lose out in the end. Poor secondary love interest. Speaking of likeable, Rin from Blue Exorcist was fun to watch. Not for the story or anything (since that was lacking at times), Nobu provided a performance that was really enjoyable. He nails Nishinoya’s energetic personality in Haikyuu (”ROLLING THUNDAAAAA”), and he does a good job with Mikorin’s bashfulness and awkwardness in Gekkan Shoujo. Honestly, Mikoshiba is my favourite character in Gekkan Shoujo along with Seo who’s a legend. I haven’t watched Taoru Kagaku no Railgun, but Accelerator looks like such a fun character who I would like. Too bad I couldn’t get myself to like that anime.
