What do you think of Bonkers’ 2 part pilot episode?

Been prolly a decade or more since I checked that out - back when I discovered this show and thought it was a personal dream cartoon concept come to life (too bad finding any episodes online was a real pain)

As of now, I'm a wee mixed about it actually - the whole pilot's first half moves at break-neck pace, which dampers bit on a bit more stronger 2nd half. And show's already bit lacking in humorous moments - a lot of jokes or slapstick unfortunately lack the kind of charm and wit that were on other more successful shows playing with similar premises at the time at the time -- Animaniacs--. Now, I did actually like Bonkers putting quite a fine front dealing with the creatures from Mr.Collector's prop box - this really showing how he can work up Toon tricks from his career on dealing with baddies (now and then he dips to this brief moments of pretty damn cool like in my notes on this post) And while I found the Peel Slip-thing bit too ham-fisted as a "toon thing", it was pretty nice Chekhov's Gun to reveal who Mr.Collector really was. Though NGL, the design he had made me wish he was actually a bigger kind of villain who doesn't just collect Bonkers and his friends to his personal collection - but he could have been an sewer-dwelling creepy guy who'd be behind many, MANY toon disappearances. Imagine the kind of satire you could do about that kind of collector/fanatic culture from that time period, especially with growing advent of the internet and on-going comic book collecting... The growing friendship with Lucky and Bonkers was bit forced at times though - or maybe Lucky was unusually patient with Bonkers upon meeting him first time - also man, Chief Leonard Kanifky was more goofier than I remember. The pilot was kinda like the whole show - great premise, but middling execution that seems to usually saves it's best bits to last minutes.

This was for the new video I already uploaded on my Youtube Channel about the Chip n Dale movie, so I wanted to draw myself in different animation styles.

I also decided that if I was in worlds like “The Powerpuff Girls” or “The Fairly OddParents”, I would be drawn as an adult character, because one of my pet peeves is that when artists draw themselves in the style of shows like “Invader Zim” or “Madeline”, they always draw themselves as kids, which annoys me somewhat.

Out of all the art styles I did, I love the “Invader Zim” styles. That show is one of my biggest influences of my art style. I also love how the “Peanuts” and Bruce Timm style came out. And for the Chuck Jones one, I added a picket sign telling Pepe le Pew that I’m not a skunk.

Who was your first fictional crush?

I'm going to get ripped on for this by @gonturan0 for even mentioning it again but my first ever fictional crush was when I was in elementary school, and it was the Magic School Bus. Like, the bus itself. RIP. On the other hand kid me was Galaxy Brained so can't really argue that having a car boyfriend that can take me to space isn't the coolest thing ever.

Hey there. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for hating Sam-I-Am at the moment. I really wanted to like him as much as you do, but his actions hurt me so bad that I can’t look at him the same way. Lipstick or chapstick: Lipstick. I wear it for work, and that’s more of an obligation than anything, but I do enjoy when my Halloween costumes require me to go out and obtain a vibrant and unconventional shade. There’s something liberating about just painting your mouth bright blue.

Any books I’m reading: I just finished up “Don’t Know Much About Mythology” by Kenneth Davis, and I’m wondering if I want to tackle another nonfiction tome (I have my eyes on “The Joy of Ancient History” by Elizabeth Vandiver, but it’s been a pain to FIND) or kick back with some good old-fashioned fantasy reads. My recent revisiting of Mary Poppins and my conflicted feelings over the recent sequel have me curious about P.L. Travers’ original vision, so I might seek that out. There’s also a Hocus Pocus novelization/sequel by A.W. Jantha that came out this year, and that’s enticing. Or I could just wander the shelves of the library, pull random spines, and take home whatever looks interesting. 

Last song I listened to: As I am writing this, I am in the midst of listening to “Emergency” by Paramore.

Last movie I watched: Mary Poppins Returns. Which, as I mentioned, gave me conflicted feelings, but that’s a topic for another day.

Top 3 Favorite TV Shows: DON’T MAKE ME PICK. PLEASE.

Top 3 bands: Halestorm and Panic! At the Disco are the mainstays, but that third slot has been a little more shaky as of late. It used to be Muse for certain, but I’m kind of in a phase right now where My Chemical Romance has actually kind of displaced Muse...and yet I am fully aware this is in fact a phase and I’ll probably give that spot to Adam Lambert or Nightwish or someone this time next year.

What are your thoughts on Chip n Dale 2022?

Hooh, it's almost gonna be a year since that came out... I remember writing a long Twitter-thread after finishing it.

To sum it up.... while it was mildly entertaining at times, the whole movie just was so laced in that edgy, cynical "childhood cartoons turned cynical/fake"-vibe that you could get a-plenty from likes of DorklyBits/CollegeHumor's parodies on Youtube - which works for that kind of instant, low-brow humor in that site. Considering who they got to helm this movie, it's no big, whooping surprise. Prolly why the animation quality matches that kind of effort too.

But it becomes kind of difficult to sit through this sheer lack of sincerity as the whole movie just shoves us ickily unflattering versions of Toons we grew up with, either to get low-hanging edgy internet humor or meta jokes out of them that leaves me more embittered on having grown up with these shows, as now I'm watching them being mocked or twisted beyond recognition on-screen.

I've long been dead-tired of the "Grown-Up Caillous" or "Toons in Modern Hollywood/Youtube-Era"-trope that's been rampant in our industry or entertainment for so long:

This insistence that these characters and the shows we grew up with from our childhood days, are meant to expire in our minds as shallow stuff for "kids" as we reach into adulthood, and thus grow "beyond them", in a way - and thus find belieability or entertainment on them not really growing with us as result. Often these people have such little self-awareness to think the only way we'd ever be interested about these cartoon characters adults, is to just portray them in very gritty, "realistic" ways that are supposed to speak to your modern, cynical adulthood.

So when I have to watch Lonely Island just takes these characters for granted, giving us these edgy takes like Monty being a crackhead for cheese enough to apparently drive him out of rent - or tone-deafly written villains like Sweet Pete... yeah, it kinda leaves me with very disgusted taste on my mouth. (And the less said about the intended humor driving the "relationship" Gadget and Zipper, the better.) Finish this with a Modern Corporate and Post-Ironic, Reference-laden Hollywood writing on top of what Lonely Island's best at - and you get a movie I've been wanting to stay as far away as possible, unless I'd go watch reviews lambasting it for these very aspects.

The most important thing about Roger Rabbit has always been how the people behind the movie showed us just how and why the Toons meant so much to the generations that grew up with them: whether they had entertained you in zany, infectiously charming ways in the original theatrical runs in 1940s - or the various syndicated runs on TVs post-theatre era. That kind of deep appreciation and sincerity towards all of the Toons in Roger Rabbit - you can just feel it throughout every cameo and portrayal of them in the entire movie.

It's no GD wonder how it helped usher in such renewed appreciation and fondness back towards Western Animation back in the late 80s, and eventually ushering us to such amazing resurgence on it as we'd hit the 90s with Disney Renaissance, WB's Animated TV Series and even a few cartoon-only cable channels. How's that? It's kinda unfortunate how there's so many people thinking how R/R 2022 is apparently a modern successor to Roger Rabbit - when you can clearly see that the people helming former doesn't really thing as much highly about medium of animation as Richard Williams and his crew movie crew did.

But duh - what did you expect from people who weren't that into animation at the first place? And I think that's the problem. For the past few decades, these celebrities getting to helm or act in movies like these... Lonely Island, whatever all-star casts in Live-Action Disney Remakes, critics at Oscars, and rich executives in Hollywood - all have come to believe that animation's for children - while also being interested on brand recognition that brings them more fame and money ultimately. So it's easy for them to not just treat medium of animation like crap, but also see these animated characters as mere lifeless, floating signifiers for their brand recognition - or even prop them as representations of naive, childish immaturity or bad role models for youth that they can lampshade or mock in post-ironic fashion later, thanks to so many poor or twisted generalizations on the animation industry or even internet that Disney most notably has attempted to "address" in their movies for years now.

TL;DR: No sir, I didn't like it.

You’re not gonna believe this, but I plan to turn “Wreck-It Ralph” as a horror movie in my comic series.

OMG! What are the odds lol. Tbh divulging into the horror implications of some of the plot points in kids movies is just really cool to me. There is so much going on in WIR, universe wise, so why not ask the tough questions??

Can’t wait to see what kind of ideas you have for a comic!

Inktober # 17

This drawing is personal, because it involves me trying to escape 2 Disney villains that are the scariest to me personally.

I’ve mentioned multiple times over at @princessofanimationblr that Scroop from “Treasure Planet” scares me to death to the point that he gave me nightmares, but what I didn’t told you was that before Scroop, King Candy (aka Turbo) from “Wreck-It Ralph” scared me as well. In fact, King Candy nearly made me swore off of video games until I learned that Princess Peach would be a playable character in “Super Mario 3D World”.

This will be colored in, because you can tell that King Cybug is in that drawing, you can’t tell that Scroop is in it.

*SPOILERS*

So I’ve finished watching “Green Eggs and Ham” on Netflix, and I really enjoy it. But..

The last 4 episodes had me feel so distraught and depressed. It’s not like “Ringing Bell”, where I cry all day after watching it, but it’s close. It’s that those episodes reveal that Sam-I-Am not only works for Snerz, but he’s also a scam artist. 

And as you can see, that left everyone in the GEAH fandom shocked. Me? I was going on all Tyra Banks on Sam when I watch those 4 episodes, as you can see here with this comic.

Looking back, I wish I had used Guy or EB to call Sam out for what he did, but I decided to use my avatar instead. 

Please don’t get mad at me for this, but the reason why I used my avatar is because I was developing a crush on Sam (thanks in no small parts to some of the fans here on this site.). And if you look at my fandom blog @princessofanimationblr , you’ll see the hashtag #animated crushes where I shamelessly show my love for animated boys that I have crushes on (But don’t worry, I have my fair share of real life men that are cute in my eyes). 

And Sam was close to being one of my animated crushes (And I do find that artist rendering of him kind of hot), and then the revelation that he’s a scam artist just blew my attraction to him out the window, and I’m crying about that. It’s like I’m going through a rough fictional breakup with him (even though he’s not real). I’ll tell you, I have never gone through a fictional breakup that’s as bad as this.

This was not fun to do this comic. It wasn’t fun sketching it, and it wasn’t fun inking and coloring it on Photoshop. Cause whenever I drew it, I constantly broke down and cried because I’ve been hurt and betrayed by Sam’s true nature. Although that may have to do with the fact I was also listening to sad songs from Evanescene to Mariah Carey to stinking Britney Spears of all people. 

Sorry for the lack of backgrounds. I just stink at drawing backgrounds (I’m trying to improve on drawing it, though), so I decided to make it black and white. But I will admit that I did like how Sam turned out in my cute anime style.
