thinking abt tlt, som, and ttc era percy
percy who's still struggling to find his footing at camp, and every single time during those first three prophecies, he's seen as the outcast, and never once brought into the fold until he comes back after finishing the prophecy.
there's always something that pushes him to the outskirts, something that gives the other campers fodder to make fun of him or completely ignore him.
he thinks he's found his place after the minotaur? nope, turns out everyone sees him as a bad omen and he doesn't make any friends because the entire camp refuses to be around him.
he thinks he's found his place after lighting thief? restoring zeus' bolt? NOPE he finds out tyson is a cyclopes and his brother and now one of his closest friends + the campers are icing him out and grover's not around.
he thinks he's found his place after sea of monsters? restored thalia's tree and hey, now he's got a cousin? NOPE he's pushed aside in favor of her by the campers and chiron and is seen as incompetent and his best friend has been kidnapped and he's being blamed.
rereading those first three books now is so painful, because the way percy gets treated by the camp hurts so much, because literally all he wants is to be accepted by this group of people he should have so much in common with, but every single turn meets him with more people pushing him away.
and it isn't until battle of the labyrinth, until he's named as the child of the prophecy, that people actually start to treat him as one of them.

5x07 - Puppet Master
Into the Groove - Pamela Lansbury
“Okay, look, guys, I know it's untraditional, but you have to trust me. I was there at Callbacks. I saw it all, a vision of perfect clarity. Every seat was occupied. A quiet hush fell over the expectant crowd. As Pamela Lansbury made their way to the stage, and the opening notes of Madonna's 1985 single hit "Into the Groove" begin.”

I often forget that season 3 and a lot of season 4 of Glee exists
And when I am reminded, I am …disturbed
Also Run Joey Run. I love it, I do, but also. Traumatizing. As is most of Glee.

spent like 40 minutes this morning listening to the recording of a twitter space where japanese aod fan bought an official aod anime english dub and went on talking about different approaches to the source material in the translation while admitting to understand little to no english words. she dutifully replayed some of the moments to highlight her thoughts and observations, as well as to share some of the research she's done on particularly interesting phrases (Zack's "peekaboo" from the first episode notebly being one of them)
i literally couldn't stop smiling the whole time because hey, we do that too! as international fans we overanalyze the words used in the source material all the time! we also may not understand all of the phrases! we do our research just to excitedly gush about the implications and the context around certain words! and we also compare translations with the original!!
knowing that jp fans can treat a translation with just as much passion and care is such a delight! feels like a gentle handshake from overseas full of mutual understanding

i think the fact that jean seems really unsure about whether she wants to have a parental relationship with rachel is very interesting too. there's the times she rejects her, of course, but jean also sometimes reaches out to rachel, tries to include her in some way...i think her ambivalence/uncertainty is really interesting contrasted w scott, who does really embrace rachel as his kid, and with jean's own line on children ("i always thought we'd have a girl")
anyway i think your thoughts on rachel and jean are very fun and interesting and yeah i also think it makes a lot of sense that jean might not want to be a mom here, and i think that's pretty sympathetic.
jean and rachel are soooo interesting and so much to me, because of the ways rachel does want that relationship with her dead mother and (like you said) because of what jean's connection with phoenix means for rachel! that's such a cool line of thought, do you have any other thoughts on jean and rachel and phoenix?
yes!!! i think the ambivalence is sooo important because like jean does have kids in her life that she cares for! i think theres a lot of space between like "considers herself this child's actual biological mother" and "is an unrepentant asshole to a traumatized teenager" and that middle ground is really interesting and deserves exploration!
i think all the time about jean inviting rachel to her and scott's wedding because to me that feels like a perfect middle ground of acknowledging like "you are family and i do want you to feel like you have a place with us." I also think it's fine if Jean doesn't handle it perfectly. Obviously very traumatic for Rachel to reach out to her parents and have Jean run away crying but also sometimes that's life! Sometimes you do something you regret in the heat of the moment and you have to walk it back a little!
As far as the Scott/Jean difference I wrote a little bit abt that but I do think its sooo fascinating and I wish current comics would actually like...acknowledge that they apparently had to find some middle ground on that issue lmfao.
The phoenix stuff like. honestly is fully mind palace/me just making shit up lol because I stopped paying attention to what marvel had to say about the phoenix when Rachel had no role in AvX but the way i conceptualize it is like. Jean & the Phoenix are one, and Rachel is of the Phoenix and I think that Rachel feels very instinctually drawn to her because of it. Both because it feels like the power and the connection to the universe itself that Rachel used to hold and because its a force that ultimately feels very maternal to her.
I kind of conceptualize it as something that Rachel & Jean both intuitively understand but that Jean is unwilling to acknowledge, especially because doing so would mean admitting that Jean really is Rachel's mother (in a cross-dimensional, highly metaphysical sense). I feel like in this scenario, Rachel would be the one keeping more distance from Jean because she finds Jean's presence comforting but she knows Jean will always want to maintain some distance between them. So she'd rather have strained silence and stiff small talk than to have an almost-but-not-quite relationship that reminds her of everything she lost and can never have again. Cannot emphasize enough that this is me just saying stuff that I made up lol I just think it's an interesting angle to take on their relationship given the stuff we do get in canon.

now that rachel is canonically into women maybe we can get the comic that talks about her complicated feelings on her mother as a model of femininity that is both supposedly aspirational and terrifying.

so much of loser like me was about turning the tables and flipping everything on its head, and i think most striking for me was how that looked for kurt. i’m firmly in the camp that the breakup, while a painful scene and tonally jarring after how joyfully s5 ended, didn’t come out of the blue. there were a lot of hints in 5b (even more i picked up on, on rewatch) that signaled klaine weren’t out of the woods yet.
particularly, what blaine says in the scene, about how kurt’s been aloof, distant, and not entirely truthful, contextualized with what kurt tells rachel about his intimacy issues. obviously, the few months between these moments aren’t long enough for him to have magically made those issues go away, but i think the contrast between kurt’s demeanor in the breakup scene and the openness he displays in the rest of the ep (especially in the scandals scenes) already illustrates progress for him. he’s not all the way there, but the fact that he’s openly and explicitly admitting that he’s here to get blaine back, his forgiveness, and then his heart, all while resting his hand on top of blaine’s. that’s.....pretty huge for kurt, being both physically and emotionally intimate in that moment.
it really makes me wish we had gotten more about therapy for kurt, bc as i’ve said before, intimacy is really only the tip of the iceberg. the events of s5 alone are plenty to unpack, tbh. even his body language, comparing the breakup scene and the rest of the ep, is like night and day. there’s so much tension in the way kurt is holding himself in the restaurant. he emphasizes the word exhausting and you can see the physical manifestation of that. i think there’s a case to be made from this body language being pretty consistent through a lot of 5b, especially after the events of bash. this episode sees him reaching out for comfort, being open with his feelings and allowing himself to feel his emotions as they come. i think that’s all incredibly significant, a sign of how far he’s come. he definitely has a lot more work to do, but as we don’t really get anything more about therapy for kurt, i felt like this would be important to mention.
also, linking the pieces i wrote about kurt and blaine’s headspaces post breakup, bc i’m very proud of them and stand by them 100%: ao3 | tumblr
