Requested by @crispyoperawolfdean: What if Max’s birth mother comes back and makes some fake story about being forced to give Max by some demon and now wants him back but Malec are devastated because it’s their Blue and they won’t survive without him. And rafe is all no he’s my Brother, he’s mine, he’s a Lightwood bane. And basically Malec family angst but ending up with lots and lots of tears and cuddles

A knock at the door interrupted Alec’s concentration of the movie, Coco. Alec glanced at Magnus, silently asking him if he was expecting anyone. Magnus raised his eyebrows in return, telling him that he had no idea who it was.

It was some woman, probably in her thirties; she had dark, long straight hair and she had a serious expression on her face. That was what made Alec nervous. Who was she? Magnus was almost immediately at his side. Judging by the look on his face, Magnus didn’t know him either.

“Hello?” Alec said.

The woman glanced at Alec’s face briefly before looking into the house. Alec quickly shielded the door so she couldn’t see beyond him. There was something about her that was off; Alec didn’t trust her.

“How can we help you,” asked Magnus, calmly. Alec knew his husband well enough to know that he was ready to attack.

“You have my son.”

Alec was taken aback. Rafael’s parents were Shadowhunters who were killed. That meant…no, she couldn’t be. She didn’t even look like Max...then again Max was blue so it was kind of hard to tell.

“And?” Alec said. He could feel Magnus’s gaze on him. He was probably shocked at Alec’s nonchalant reply.

“I’ve come to take him back.”

“Yeah, not going to happen.”

Her voice lowered as she glared at him, “He’s my son, not yours.”

“You gave birth to him, that’s it,” Alec replied, trying hard to keep his calm. “We’ve been taking care of him ever since you abandoned him. What was it you said, ‘Who could ever love it?’”

“You don’t understand! I want my boy!”

“You can’t just change your mind about that. That’s not how having a child works,” Magnus said.

“I know that! I didn’t want to give him up! I was forced to by a demon. He told me that if I didn’t abandon him then it’ll kill me.”

Alec raised his eyebrows, “So, why does that mean you can suddenly have him now?”

“I hired someone to kill it.”

Alec didn’t know how to respond to that; it was completely plausible that she could have hired someone with the sight, or a rogue Shadowhunter to kill the demon. The story still didn’t sit right with him, though. It could be because of his love for his son, but he hoped that it was something more.

“I understand your pain,” Magnus said softly. “But we have taken care of Max and loved him as our own since you abandoned him four years ago. Separating him from us would be cruel after all he has already gone through.”

“It’s not like he remembers me leaving him.”

Alec clenched his fists, “I don’t care whether he remembers or not, he knows what his mother did to him.”

“I want to make it right. Please, just let me see my son.”

“Dad, Papa, who is she?” Alec heard Rafael ask from behind him.

“Is that him? He sounds a lot older than I thought he would.”

Alec quickly excused himself and closed the door on her. Rafael was looking at him with big eyes that were already starting to water. Alec quickly led him to the kitchen, making sure to not disturb Max, who was still engrossed in the movie.

“What does she want with Max?” Rafael whispered.

“That woman says she’s Max’s mother,” Alec said slowly, hoping that Rafael wouldn’t freak out.

“Does she want to take him back?”

Alec hesitated. Should he tell his son the truth, after all Rafael was still really young and the last thing he needed was to alert Max. He wasn’t even sure if Max would fully understand what was going even if they explained it to him.

“So she is?” Rafael said, crossing his arms.

“That’s what she wants, but me and your papa aren’t having it.”

“Good! Max is my brother! I’m not letting anyone take him!”

The woman knocked on the door, Magnus quickly slipped outside to prevent her from causing a scene. Alec knelt down to Rafael, “Listen, we’re going to talk with her, you make sure that Max doesn’t notice, okay? Can you do that for me?”

Rafael studied him for a moment, “He’s a Lightwood-Bane just like us. Don’t let her take him.” With that, the young boy marched into the living room.

Alec sighed with relief and slipped outside the loft. Magnus was tense. Alec didn’t know what happened but obviously she said something to make Magnus mad.

“Is this what you two do?” she asked. “Steal other people’s children?”

Magnus took a step towards her but Alec stopped him by pressing a hand on his chest. “It’s not stealing when we took in children without a home. I don’t care if you're Max’s mother or not, but the fact that you think that you could come here and demand that you take our son away from us then start insulting us when we’re taken aback really shows who you are as a person. Honestly, I wouldn’t want our son anywhere near you. There’s clearly more motivation here than a mother’s love for her child. Now, I suggest we give you a truth-telling potion so you can really tell us what you’re up to.”

The woman looked at him, her eyes wide, “You can’t do that.”

“I can, as Max’s guardian I can do whatever I feel is necessary to make sure he is safe. But, I’m sure that’s not an option for you considering the story you told us is absolute bullshit.”

Her eyes narrowed, “I will get my son back, whether you like it or not.”

“Good luck with that,” Magnus said.

She hurried away, giving them both a death glare that didn’t end until she was out of sight.

“We should tell Cat about this,” said Magnus. “And amp up the wards, just in case.”

Alec nodded. He had a feeling that this wasn’t the last time they were going to see her.

When they went inside they were greeted by both of their kids staring at them.

“Where were you?” asked Max. “You missed the funny part!”

“We did? I’m sorry!” Magnus said as he lifted his son into the air.

“What were you guys doing?”

“Just talking,” Alec said, beckoning Rafael to come to him.

“About what?” replied Max.

“Just how much we love you and that we’re so happy that we’re all a big happy family.”

A few tears were dripping down Rafael’s face. Alec pulled him to his side. Rafeal buried his face into him. At that moment, Alec's chest felt tight. He never would have thought that he would be here, defending his child and keeping him safe. He never thought that he would even have a partner that he actually loved, much less children. “I love you guys,” he whispered.

“I love you too, Daddy!” Max cried out.

Magnus kissed Alec on the cheek, seeming to sense what Alec was thinking. “I love all of you, so much.” He looked at Alec and smiled at him, silently reiterating what he had just said.
