WHEN I MADE MY BLOG: i’ve had this blog since, hmm probably 2016 but just recently in january 2020 converted it to my writeblr!!

WHY I MADE A TUMBLR: I made this tumblr so that i would be able to express my opinions and openly love the things that i do (which is a wide variety of things) without the judgement from people i know irl!! I decided to convert it to my writeblr because i decided to start getting more serious about my writing and wanted to start an outlet that i could share my work with once it got more under way (I’m not quite ready to post my current wip’s intro but coming soon!!)

REASONS FOR MY URL: softly--sinking is the URL from when i originally created this blog four years ago, i was in a pretty bad head space when i made the blog and felt like i was slowly sinking away from friends, family into my own little world where i could be myself finally. I decided when i made this blog my writeblr that i would keep the same URL because it makes me reflect on where i am now compared to when i made this blog four years ago :)

Glorious story of T Nagar...

Theagaraya Nagar aka T Nagar has become an important global destination in the shopping manual so much so that even the visitors, both domestic and foreign, keep T Nagar in their visit schedule. T Nagar, unfortunately has been in the news for all the wrong reasons during the last few days. Rains and subsequent floods battered T Nagar and the adjoining places like Mambalam which are still reeling under the mess created by the floods. It would be interesting to understand the story of how T Nagar came into existence in the last century. 

T Nagar was the first planned area or colony in the pre-Independent Madras and it came into being only in the 1920s. If one traveled from Gemini flyover to Guindy before the 1920s, the entire stretch on the right side was occupied by a huge, 77 acre lake called Long tank of Mylapore. The lake was surrounded by paddy fields in the old Mambalam village which was outside the limit of the then Madras. Puliyur, another adjoining village encompassed the present day areas of Kodambakkam, K K Nagar and Ashok Nagar. In those days, Madras had a population of 6.30 lacs as per 1921 census. The administration felt the need for a vast area to facilitate settlement of people who were struggling to find places on the left side of Mount Road. 

The Justice Party was ruling Madras during those times under the British regime, which offered self governance to the locals in a limited manner. During that phase it was decided to create a new colony by drying up the long tank of Mylapore and by acquiring lands in Mambalam, Puliyur and Saidapet. The final area for the new colony to be developed stood at about 540 acres.The total cost for the government to acquire the 540 acres was 5 lacs, a princely sum those days. Altogether 490 acres were offered by the government to the interested people who wished build houses and settle down. The land measures offered to the people were 1 acre, half acre, quarter acre, 2.5 grounds, 1.5 grounds and 1 grounds. 

The name of the new colony project was called Mambalam New Town and the development of the new colony happened between 1921-1924. And it's hard to believe that there were very few takers when the government offered the land in that newly developed colony. Later on, a railway line was established in that area which was called as Mambalam railway station and remains in the same name till date. The areas west of the station was called as West Mambalam and East of Mambalam merged with T Nagar. The newly established railway line and the station pushed up the demand for the land in and around Mambalam. The names in the newly established colony were named after the politicians belonging to the Justice party. T Nagar gets the name of Sir Pitti Theagaraya Chetty, one of the founders of Justice Party. Nair road was named after another founder, T M Nair. A beautiful park which is central to the new town was named after Paanagal Rajah, which is now called Panagal Park. G N Chetty road was named after another Justice party leader, Gopathi Narayanaswami Chetty. Two  corporation workers who died during the development phase got their honour by being named after two streets. They were Nathamuni street and Govindu street. 

Another park was named after Natesa Mudaliar, one of the founders of the Justice Party. Usman road, a prominent road running through T Nagar was named after Sir Mohammed Usman, another doyen of the Justice Party. Yet another important landmark, the Boag road was named after a British bureaucrat Sir G T Boag. Venkatanarayana Road, which connects T Nagar with Nandanam was named after another official, J Venkatanarayana Rao Naidu. The beehive of modern T Nagar, Ranganathan street got the name of Ranganathaswamy of Srirangam and one would be surprised it was completely a residential street before it became a commercial hub in the later years. 

Pondy bazaar, another shopping hub within T Nagar got its name after a trader from Pondicherry who owned several shopping establishments in that stretch. Many movie stars of yesteryear bought residences in and around T Nagar as it was closer to the movie studios which centered around Kodambakkam. Over the years, T Nagar became an important residential and commercial centre in the old Madras and now in modern Chennai. Will the great locality get its sheen back after all this mess?! Let's wait and watch
