Daniel Ricciardo and tennis – a masterpost (of sorts).

To start things off, here is a video of Daniel playing tennis that I think about way too often, especially lately, with the recent paddle mania that took over the paddock.

A few things I could note here, apart from the fact that Daniel himself said that if it wasn't racing, he'd go pro in tennis:

old school-ish (european) one handed backhand which is actually rather solid! Daniel said many times that he is a big fan of Federer (a true goat) and Daniel's technique here is pretty much imitating Roger's smooth and satisfying backhand strokes.

it is just a couple of hits but ball placement court wise in not bad - all past the half court mark, down the line, then cross court and close to the baseline.

his movement on the court itself comes off a bit wonky in comparison to regular players but I do like how he attacks the short ball (even if he swings a bit too wide but it still works).

Some assortment of interesting facts:

Apart from his love for Roger Federer, Daniel was a big Andre Agassi fan.

In 2021 Daniel and Lando stayed up to watch British teenage tennis player Emma Raducanu (who is an avid F1 fan and her fave driver is Daniel) win the US Open, her maiden grand slam tournament. This was right before the win in Monza and McLaren 1-2.

In 2020, Daniel took inspiration for his "Equality" face mask from the four time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka and called her a "strong voice" (which she rightfully was). Lewis Hamilton also considered Naomi a great inspiration in raising awareness of several social issues.

When Daniel was a kid, he would smash his racquet if he lost (that's so real of him and i do that too):

Ricciardo is widely regarded as motorsport’s nice guy. But when does the mongrel come out? "I’m a born competitor. As a kid I was a sore loser. If it was a tennis match, I’d smash a racquet or something," he said, laughing. (source)

Once Daniel was playing with his cousin and apparent he got a little outplayed, so in retaliation Daniel hit his cousin point blank with a tennis ball (which hurts A LOT). His cousin cried and then Daniel's dad gave him "a clip across the ear". Daniel also talks about it in one of the Grill the Grid videos. Daniel is childhood friends with Marcus Stoinis (an Aussie cricketer) and they grew up together playing tennis, driving to Dunsborough south of Perth and they would play tennis together for the whole day, practically hogging the court. (via this post)

#1: ABU DHABI 2022 i cannot state just how much brain damage this moment did to me. like i vividly remember freaking the fuck out about the martian interview on sky and talking to the besties and barbi @brawn-gp was like omg another moment do u want me to clip. and i was like YEAH YES. Hello, this is my favorite chapter ever. So the whole ep. is the moment I love.

Is it the aesthetic given by a different iconic Director?

the ambient sounds where you can hear your Summer crickets?

the nostalgic and melancholic feeling that this gives you without even knowing why?

the feeling that something is not really ok?

the back and forth of Taichi trying also to figure out what is real and what is going on?

the revelation that is still the same day?

Hikari, my 2nd favorite character being here and kinda creepy with her knowledge?

the protagonist I love showing he's a great brother who loves his sister (a personal biase there as fraternal love is something I got emotional about) ?

the way that all around Taichi feels more mature in this episode being at home and caring about his sister and Digimon partner?

the music that always put you in the mood even if there's a big dinosaur attacking your city (which granted, it's such an amazing piece of music that even featured in the freakin entrance of the OLYMPIC TORCH AT TOKYO 2020 OPENING CEREMONY WHAT)?

the ending part where you can see the tension of the siblings watching Digimons no one can, and an Agumon that shows that rookies can be snappy and good in hands of a nice episode Director?

the whole ending with first Agumon saying goodbye, and Hikari trying to stop Taichi in a heartbreaking moment that probably made me cry %90 of the times with that music?

The understanding that this is the first time in the show that one of the destined children decided by himself to be in the Digital World, instead of being forced to be there?

the resolution that it implies a turning point to Taichi, to be back to do what he must do?

Maybe a little bit of everything.

Needle + Thread

Summary: Mac needs his wounds stitched up. Unfortunately for him, he and the team are in the middle of nowhere without painkillers.

The sound of the crackling fire was the only thing heard amongst the chirping crickets, the chattering of Riley’s teeth, and Mac’s ragged breathing. At least, it was all Jack could hear, which was a good thing for the most part.

They had to set up camp in the woods to lay low and wait for exfil. Unfortunately none of them were wearing appropriate attire to be camping during November, which left them all a little on the chilly side. Jack and Riley could handle it but they were both worried about Mac, who was currently bleeding out thanks to a gash on his belly when he decided it’d be a good idea to get into a knife fight with someone.

They’d started on building a small fire immediately and Jack was on a constant lookout in case anyone decided to bother checking out the smoke. Riley was doing her best to make sure Mac was warm and comfortable.

After doing another sweep of their makeshift campsite, Jack walked over to them and sat on the other side of Mac, “How you holdin’ up?”

Mac lifted his bloody hand from his wound and shook it, giving Jack a glare.

“Right. I guess you’re doin’ a little bad.”

Mac replaced his hand and groaned, “Understatement.”

“Well, good news,” Jack rummaged around in his jacket pocket, “I have a needle and thread here, so we could stitch you up real quick, if you want.”

“Why’d you pick up a needle and thread?” Riley piped up.

“You never know what weird shit Mac’s plans may call for. Good thing those terrorists were hiding out in an abandoned crafting supply store, huh?”

Mac groaned as he sat up to inspect the needle, “Yeah, I think I can do without the tetanus. Or the pain that comes with sewing up a wound with cotton.”

“Oh, I know not to use cotton, hoss. That’s why this thread is actually silk.” Jack showed Mac the end of the thread, a sticker that was labeled 99¢ with “SILK” just under the price.

“Whatever. Don’t want to do it.”

Jack frowned and turned to Riley, “What’s the ETA on exfil, Riles?”

Riley grabbed Jack’s wrist to look at his watch, “Two, maybe three hours.”

“Alright so it’s either extinguishing or risking tetanus and I’d rather take a risk than watch you bleed to death, hoss.”

“Okay, first,” Mac grunted, “it’s ‘exsanguination’, second, tetanus could just as easily kill me.”

“Yeah, but by the time you get it we’ll be back home and not in the middle of nowhere.”

“And that’s still if you get it,” Riley added.

Mac let out a long and pitiful groan, “Fine.”

“Besides, you’re more likely to get an infection.”

“Riley,” Jack whispered harshly, “why would say that after he just agreed to gettin’ patched up?”

“Come on, Jack, he already knows the dangers this might bring, right Mac?”

“Yep.”

“See.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Jack started to stick the thread through the needle while Riley helped Mac lay back down. After much trial and error, Riley eventually took the needle from Jack and stuck the thread in the first try.

“Need to bring your reading glasses next time?”

Jack fake laughed and took the needle back from her. He moved to Mac and started to lift up his shirt, “Now, you know this is gonna hurt like hell.”

Mac gave Jack a pleading look, “Let’s just get this over with.”

Jack sighed, having zero desire to hurt his kid, but knowing this’ll help in the long run, “Okay.” He positioned the needle under the gash and Mac squeezed his eyes shut before Jack pulled back, “Wait, hang on a sec. Hold this.” Jack handed the needle to Riley and started to unbuckle his pants.

“Um.”

“Don’t make it weird, dude. It’s just something for you to put in your mouth.” Jack stopped, Riley groaned, and Mac face-palmed.

“Way to make it weird, Jack.”

“Shut up! You know what I’m talkin’ about!” Jack angrily wrangled with his belt then handed it to Mac. He waited for Mac to fit it in his mouth and got the needle back in position when Mac gave him a thumbs up.

The needle pierced Mac’s skin and he inhaled sharply. Were the needle bigger than a sewing needle, the pain likely would’ve been worse. He briefly thought that this was nothing, it was something he could handle, but it pierced again and he couldn’t deny that it hurt.

He flinched at the next poke and Jack brought his free hand up to rest on the blond’s stomach. The delta gently brushed his thumb on Mac’s skin, hoping that his touch offered some kind of comfort when Mac flinched again. Riley took Mac’s hand in hers and didn’t protest when he squeezed it a little roughly. They both do their best to help Mac ride out the pain as Jack finished stitching him up.

The second Jack said “done”, Mac spat out the belt and goes to sit up but the hand still on his stomach prevented him from doing so.

“Whoa, hey, slow down there, hoss. This thread was designed to keep clothes together, not human skin.”

“As opposed to other kinds of skin?” Riley said. Jack gave her a look and she raised her hands in a shrug as Mac let out a quiet laugh.

“What I’m saying is, take it slow cause it’ll probably come apart real easy.” Jack removed his hand but Mac remained flat on his back.

“In that case,” Mac huffed, “I think I’m gonna sit here for a while.”

“Hey, you do what you gotta do, man. We gotcha.”

Riley moved to lay down beside Mac, hand still in his and Jack started to take off his jacket. The oldest agent placed it on the youngest, despite his protests, and laid down on the other side of him. “Don’t want you catchin’ a cold to go along with that possible infection.”

“It’s not even that cold.”

“Then why’re you shaking, Mac?” Riley asked.

Mac sighed and accepted his fate before leaning into Jack’s warmth and squeezing Riley’s hand.

The three basked in the comfort of each other’s presence as the fire continues to snap and pop. The woods are cold and uncomfortable and the youngest of them is suffering through a stinging pain in his side but there was no place he’d rather be than next to his family.

Hi Lola!

It’s such a fun coincidence that you asked me what got me into writing fic because there’s a Check Please fic series that I adore where the incoming freshman are referred to as Crickets (the captain works on his uncles lobster boats over the summers). I got back on tumblr to interact with that author (hi @sincerelyreidburke 💜) and had to come up with a new handle and the brain rot was and continues to be real. my first completed fic was a missing moment/now au outsider pov for those characters in January of 2021

Technically the first thing i posted was on New Year’s Eve 2020 and was the first chapter of a Check Please/The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Society AU and then I just kept writing 💜💜💜

rehashing this post from right before s15 like. hm !!!!! first half of the post died like hoodie gate and dennis in macs room turned to be Nothing. i’m still maintaining they fucked over quarantine (SINGING HAPPY SILLY LITTLE COUNTRY LOVE SONGS ?????? country mac vs mac) but. dennis is still emotionally in north dakota. he’s still fight or flight. he’s learnt he can’t survive without mac without the gang and still had to come crawling back to philly But he’s not emotionally back. he’s not accepted he’s back and this is Who He Is. that he couldn’t survive as someone else once again. he’s terrified mac and the gang can see through him. he still wants to run. the gang go on holiday. go where PURPLE ??? that’s not a place !!! vocal stim of all time. they go to ireland back to their Roots. they’re an Irish bar. macs so aggressively american irish. let’s tell him he’s dutch. to shut him up. need to confuse him, spin him around, give him a different focus other than Me.

mac and dennis barely interact in ireland. dennis’ obsession with authenticity almost killing him. he’s trying so hard to be Real to be a Real Person. not Himself of course. someone real here. s14 health scare dennis NOT vigilant about covid ???? REFUSING to admit he had it. because it wasn’t authentic. wasn’t Real. because he spent 2020 hiding away with mac, slowly falling back into old routines, back in love back to being see through. fuck. that’s Not what ireland was for. dennis being the one to point out charlie’s dad died from covid. weird washy vision. dennis the “Only One” who didn’t get vaccinated. s14 health freak out dennis more about mac than anything else. he wanted Everything to be The Same back to when they could read eachother BUT he’s terrified of being Seen by mac. by mac who can Now see himself as gay, what the fuck is he finally going to be able to see in dennis. macs been spun around by dennis so he just goes to i’ll look after dennis Directly when he asks. i don’t want him running away from me again. also pizza poisoning. building back up that codependency. dennis needing anything else than Mac to blame all his mac problems on. Macs priest journey he’s thinking about Himself he’s Looking After Himself. not dennis. big mo should we quit the game. if you’re not having fun anymore. he’s not. everything with dennis is more Pain than anything else. being suffocated by his own love. sorry about the delusional maccricket hopes. mac and cricket ex boyfriends i’ll never stop believing in you though. macden using cricket as a middle man instead of just fucking eachother. den and charlie trying to spin him around confuse him saying he’s not irish. okay. next aspect of my identity is catholic. i’ll just go Full into that. the wars over. the storm has stopped raging. maybe. it’s complex. but it’s easier than dennis. feeling unfulfilled by the church though. this isn’t what i wanted this isn’t filling my dennis shaped hole. coming back together on the mountain. to help charlie. finding the truth. they lied to me told me i wasn’t irish just because they thought i was annoying? heartbreaking. but back in the pub. mirror of paddys. we’re never escaping paddys. but why would i want to. we’re always running out into the world looking for treasures when everything we need is right here in the bar. their own ecosystem. and we carry out country (us. giggling like yeah the United States US and just. Us as a relationship) with us wherever we go! BECAUSE WE LOVE HER! and when you love someone , you can’t BEAR TO LEAVE EM BEHIND” watch dennis. face journey. he realises before mac. he loves philly he loves paddys he loves the gang he loves mac. HE CANT KEEP RUNNING AWAY. it’s okay to stop and be stationary. it’s okay to be who you are. “not ever” he’s ran away so many times. even this holiday with the gang he’s running from them. mac looks at him. mac knows. it’s okay that mac can read me that he can see through me like this. it’s good. i missed it. i’m weak and tired of running and I’m Sorry. everything i’ve done to you because i hated myself because i was scared of myself. they go to charlie. it’s the big game. they’ve embraced who they are (american) (Who They Are) and that’s when you WIN. dennis was in north dakota during the big game. wasn’t part of it. was still running. i’ve said it a thousand times sure he’s physically back in philly for years but emotionally he was still running. he’s stopped. laid down to rest.

i don’t want to hypothesise about s16 too much but after the first two eps are out i feel confident saying. the cat is poking his head out of the wall. he’s missing mac. i’ve said before end of clip show SINISTER “we’re back to normal” it’s dennis’ fantasy he wants so badly to become reality. he’s the best at monitoring reality and pulling one over on the gang. because that’s all he Ever does. that’s all he’s been doing. they’ve only just caught on or directly challenged him or tried to live in their own fantasies. i don’t know if dee’s cat is fully coming out of the wall but he’s poking his head. barely saw macden apartment last season because they were running away from her. sterile. in the season Opener we saw Her Insides. the fridge. casual domesticity. throwing out all of their furniture and sleeping on a blow up bed together. he’s stopped running. when you embrace who you are then you WIN. but. macs moving on. it’s been too long. took dennis too long to adjust. that happens. i’m so scared to tinhat about johnny but. i’m still your leading man. macs got another leading man. he’s being replaced maybe. it’s me it was always me. i think we’re gonna see more of that. i have always trusted the structure. i don’t think it’s going to be fruitless. yeah i think i’m out now. he’s BACK from north dakota he’s working on himself. macden doorway in inflates mirroring macdenbreakup. we don’t need to tell you our business. he’s protecting himself protecting their relationship. he’s not getting angry anymore. working to be a person. not letting small things blow up anymore. but it’s not going to be enough. he needs to Show Mac he cares More. it’s going to be difficult but. i trust the structure

Telugu

Magadheera (2009)

One of SS Rajamouli's older works and Ram Charan and Kajal absolutely stole my heart in this one. The music is still the loml and it actually also had MM Keeravani directing music

Harsha is falsely implicated for killing Indu's father and she too is kidnapped. But Harsha and Indu share a bond from a previous life, and when he realises this, he sets out to set things straight.

Jai Lava Kusa (2017)

This is one of my all time favorite NTR Jr. movies and he actually plays a triple role (identical triplets)

Identical triplets, Jai, Lava and Kusa, get separated at a young age and follow different paths in life. Jai becomes an evil criminal, Kusa becomes a small-time crook and Lava becomes a bank manager.

Dear Comrade (2019)

TW: sexual assault

This is a movie I hold rly rly close to my heart A) cuz Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika are love and B) the plot was so important especially near the climax.

A hot-headed student union leader falls in love with a state-level cricketer; but soon, his anger issues become a roadblock on his way to unite with her.

Shyam Singha Roy (2021)

If I were ever to marry anyone, Shyam is my template for that person. I absolutely loved Nani's depiction of Shyam and Sai Pallavi's Rosie. Also reincarnation but there's a twist

Vasu is a director who left his former job to make films. His girlfriend is set to play the lead role, but when she is molested and Vasu is accused of committing plagiarism, the young couple's fortunes take a turn for the worse.

EDIT: I'm dumb. I forgot to add Baahubali 1 and 2 (2015 and 2017) which is a must watch and one of the first major modern Pan-India movies

Hindi

The Kashmir Files (2022)

If you're going to watch a Hindi movie, make it this one. This tells the unheard story of the genocide of millions of Kashmiri Pandits by Islamic Terrorists and this genocide has taken place time and time again with absolutely zero media attention.

Shush Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan (2020)

I couldn't have left a list of Indian movies I made in Pride Month without mentioning this movie could I? Ayushmann Khurrana is one of my favorite Hindi actors and the representation in this movie was solid imo. Tbh I live for the song Mere Liye Tum Kaafi Ho in this movie

When two men, Kartik and Aman, fall in love with each other, they face opposition from Aman's family but they attempt to win them over.

3 Idiots (2009)

This one is a classic and works to reverse the mindset a lot of Indian students have to deal with where life = studying and parents' expectations without real time for themselves. As a student it was relatable to me and again, it was fucking hilarious.

Whooaaaa guys- take a step back. So, you know, a lot of the bnha blogs follow each other lol. That being said, no we won't aways have the same complaints, and that's fine. Just be mindful lol.

Okay--on the Deku entrance:

I mean, I wasn't expecting it yet but it's here, so we have it. I'm excited for what's to come. I'm concerned about him seeing Bakugo because that was really a nightmare scenario for me, because god forbid Bakugo develop without Deku going rage mode over him. Which quite frankly has no impact on me by now. But instead of talking about something that hasn't even happened yet, I'll mention other things that have:

I think by now it's obvious that this fight clearly existed just to develop Shigaraki. That's the only thing that's come out of it. Bakugo's death developed Shigaraki, Mirio's challenge about his friends developed him, this current chapter developed him a tiny bit and showed us that Midoriya arriving brought his eye back to Tomura. Cool stuff, I love it and will never complain about it.

NOW rant time. I'm gonna talk on some common complaints---I care about the villains and the kids associated with them, mostly in this manga. I had the luxury of only picking this manga up in 2020 and reading straight through and not having to wait for a long time to find out what's going to be important and what's not. SO:

Personally, for me, it became pretty obvious once we got MVA that the 1A kids, as a class, will not be the focus of this manga. But that's a hefty amount of arcs and chapters into the manga to change that up, especially because right before that the awful JTA just happened. But, once I saw how important Toga and Shigaraki were going to be later on, I mean, I figured spending time on the class wasn't worth it. And so far...I was right to make that assumption. But, that's the perspective of someone who had the luxury of not waiting. There is no doubt--the 1A kids are the main draw for so many people. So I can't say I blame people for being upset about them being sidelined. Honestly--given that the first 200 chapters focused on them.

Unfortunately, imo this is one of Horikoshi's flaws. He puts weird focus on characters who previously never had it or needed it. Lifts up hopes and expectations, and then doesn't follow through. Basically, he uses certain characters to fill up time when it's convenient, then moves back on to the main cast he clearly intends to focus on. Kirishima? He's the biggest, and most unfortunate example of this, I gotta say. He's gonna get a tad bit of focus in this final arc, but look at the importance his fight is getting right now (*cricket noises*......). So, yeah.

On the pro heroes and side characters, specifically the Big 3:

For me personally, this specific subgroup of characters are what slow this manga down. Badly. Yes I like that there are pro heroes. Fun designs, powers, fights, etc. We need the adult characters to work in tandem with the kids. What I don't like is random pro heroes like Edgeshot, Best Jeanist, and Mirko getting so MUCH focus they never, ever, ever, needed to have (Mirko is another conversation). As I said above, the kid characters in this manga have always been the biggest draw for the series and franchise itself. The big cast (even if not utilized well) is what drew people in. So--these past few chapters, despite the amazing Shigaraki moments, imo have been a real drag. Again--not because of my fav (I'm biased, yes) but because this fight could have reached it's ending point (ending as in time to switch to a new POV) SO. MUCH. QUICKER. if we hadn't wasted time on the pros and Big 3. I'm sorry but the Big 3 have never lived up to their "hype" as characters. Neijire is basically just *there*, Tamaki has anxiety, cool, and Mirio is high school senior version of Deku except less interesting. Not everybody feels that way about them though, which is fine.

But as I said above, I think it's obvious this fight was to develop Shigaraki--who is quite frankly given the best treatment within this manga by the author. He's clearly got the most attention from Horikoshi, so I'm not surprised that all these side characters are being used to develop him. I don't necessarily have a complaint about that, more so I have a complaint about how long it's taking and how unnecessary some of it is. I don't need a Neijire backstory at this point. I don't need the Edgeshot/ Best Jeanist bff backstory when they've literally never been relevant before this. Just develop the characters you wanna develop, quickly, and move this manga forward. Please.

"The story of how we all became heroes."

I think it's too early to say this is being ignored. There is still a final final showdown that we haven't even gotten to yet. Yes the battles are split up, but that was necessary to address the members of the League. I think it's too early to say this hasn't been followed up on yet--because one of the long term things i've always expected was an all-hands-on-deck battle at the end, League and other minor villains included, with the UA kids and pros. And given the developments with the spies at the shelter where all the FAMILIES ARE? I'm still pretty confident in the manga going that direction. So yes, I think "how we all became heroes" is still the direction we're going. Right now, certain main characters have to play their role.

No, I don't think Deku is going to solo this fight and wipe the floor with Shigaraki. IF Midoriya gains the upper hand, I would hope that it would be because of some emotional circumstances messing Shigaraki up on his end, like it has been in past fights, and this entire fight? It would make sense as it's been happening this whole time. Midoriya vs. Shigaraki isn't a power up contest. Maybe it'll be treated like it at times to please the fight lovers, but it's not at its core. There is an emotional component to it that I think will obviously take precedent over the power up side of things. So I'm not worried there. I'm really excited actually. People who don't vibe with their stuff aren't gonna like it and there's nothing to be done about that.

The second ask:

Yeah. This take actually does annoy me. Look--I've had my reserves about Midoriya's writing. I have. I haven't hidden them or acted like there aren't issues. Compare his character now to the character we had from chapter 1 up to Kamino, there's quite a big difference. He was more thoughtful and reflective. After Kamino his inner world became so focused on the OFA lore that Horikoshi forgot to develop him and make him think about things. I absolutely hated the Rogue Arc but I will say at the very least, we saw the inside of his head for a bit and there was some reflection going on there. However, notice that currently it's been quite some time since we saw what he was thinking. His conversation with Ochacko was the most insight we'd gotten in a while, and we've gotten nothing since. I suspect that will change starting with this fight, because it literally has to. I'm not concerned about it--I think he's going to be thinking, wondering what to do, what to say, how to go about this with Shigaraki etc. But I can't deny that Midoriya hasn't been as thoughtful as he was initially characterized in the beginning.

WITH THAT BEING SAID---

I'm sorry but Shouto and Ochacko didn't earn their right to save their villains any better than Midoriya did. I mean, call it easy or streamlined or whatever but Midoriya can literally repeat the same line from chapter 1 toward Bakugo and say it toward Shigaraki. That shows that, hm, the idea he will save people who need it--REGARDLESS of who they are (Bakugo being a real piece of shit at the time)--has been ingrained in his character for a hot minute.

Shouto would NOT give two shits about Dabi if he wasn't his brother. I mean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ there is nothing to suggest otherwise. SO--how that is more deserved or earned than Midoriya making the conscious choice to change gears, despite having no ties to Shigaraki or obligation to do so, is beyond me. Same with Ochacko.

All the kids needed a MOMENT to be like "Oh shit" with their villains. That doesn't make it undeserved. It had to happen. If they started this manga with a perfect world view that everyone should be saved, even the ones who hurt others and threaten their way of life for (seemingly) no reason, then we wouldn't have a narrative challenge in this final arc.

The challenge is changing their thinking, and applying their dedication to save innocent people in the streets, to saving people who won't be so easy to save. Even if they want it (which, the League does, badly) it won't be easy.

So no, while I have my reserves about some of Midoriya's writing, I certainly don't think his desire to save Shigaraki is undeserved. I think all 3 of the kids needed that wake up and smell the roses moment with their villains before they could do anything. They got those moments, and now they're moving forward based off of that.

whats your design process? like do you have multiple iterations of a design before settling or do you go straight to the final product? how much do you take canon designs into account, bc some of ur designs follow canon to a t (cricket, glory. etc) while others wildy differ (coral, tamarin, etc)

[rubs grubby little paws together] OH BOY IM GLAD YOU ASKED ANON!

Here's how I start- do I already have a design for them drawn out? May sound stupid, but if I have an art piece of a character from like, 2020, I'll start there. Ex- the first time I drew Coral was in this animatic.

Next, I decide- Is this design good? Or, do I hate it now? You can see in the aforementioned animatic, I liked my Coral design, so I stuck with it! But I wasn't so fond of my Turtle, so I changed him til I did.

If I didn't have a concept for them drawn out, I ask myself- do I have one in my head? I always imagined Tamarin as being light brown and orange, because when I read THK as a 12 year old, I didn't know what a tamarin monkey was, but I DID know that tamarind flavored candy was brownish orange. I later added blue to her design as a nod to her real, canon design.

Okay, let's say I have neither of those- I never imagined the character while reading them. They might have only been mentioned a couple times, so an image never solidified- like I never imagined what Snail or say, Truthfinder, looked like, because they were mentioned sparsely/never appeared.

With a blank canvas, I do these things in a variable order-

Check if the have a graphic novel design. I very rarely take these one for one, but they serve as a good starter.

Next, take their name into account. Cereus is a genus of cactus, so I gave her green eyes, but it also looks like the word Cerberus, so I gave her dog patterns on her sides. Snail got swirly snail-shell patterns. Urchin had a spiky frill. Mightyclaws has patterns on his talons. You get the idea.

I also do word association. Argus is a SilkWing mentioned in THQ, and in my favorite video game, a character is cursed by a demon with the "Curse of Argus." Therefore, I designed Argus after that character (Noel Levine from Witch's Heart, for those wondering). Another example is Saguaro, described as having a "Scar on her heart". This made me think of Mapleshade from warriors, who is sometimes drawn with a scar through a heart patterning on her fur, thus I gave Saguaro calico-esque patterning. Obsidian got purple spirals because he made me think of nether portals.

After that, I look at their family. This is also the one of the only times I drew out iterations of a design before settling- For Lagoon, Albatross, and Sapphire. They are the ancestors to the ENTIRE SeaWing royal line, so I wanted to start somewhere. (The other time was with Tsunami because girl she is IMPOSSIBLE to design.)

As you can see I ended up making Lagoon a deeper color and giving her mauve accents. Albatross and Sapphire were pretty similar though.

Back to looking at their family- when designing Secretkeeper, I took Moonwatchers and Morrowseers design into account- Moonwatcher was an emerald green, so Secretkeeper had to be olive to balance out Morrowseers midnight. When designing Ripple, I took into account his mom's design was indigo and pink. Pearl had pink accents because her father had coral accents.

Then, other facts we get about them. Quicksand died of illness, so he gets a mask. Mayfly mentions hippos, I make her purple. Truthfinder is a principal. she gets glasses and scrolls. Jobs, life, hobbies, etc.

If all else fails- A character is mentioned once, has no canon description, no family, no other details. Just a name, a name that gives you very little to base a design off of- I make a generic design for that tribe. Ex, I had NO idea what to do for Foreseer. Give them weird eyes, maybe? So, I started with a standard NightWing design. Then, give them a notable characteristic. A cool scar, a piece of jewelry, something to suggest a personality or a backstory. In Foreseer's case, I gave them a nervous expression, a nick in their ear, and a sapphire earring. Something to suggest a life.

All in all, remember that each character is the most important dragon in their own story, and they should look as much. And, that sometimes, being described with "snowy blue" or "ebony black" scales, like every other dragon in the tribe, is a bad way to design characters.

Finally. Finally. Now this is what I want when I read a YA novel. The target audience is clearly teens and it's not pandering to middle-aged women. This book would have meant so much to me if I had been able to read it as a teen, and as it stands, I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult. This book is so excruciatingly embarrassing, perfectly encapsulating the mortifying experience of puberty.

Nick, our main character, is riddled with ADHD, so endearingly earnest, the most popular fanfiction writer in his fandom, and is obsessed with superheroes. The only difference is that in Nick's world, superheroes are real, and they're called Extraordinaries. Nick would do anything to be extraordinary, including microwaving a cricket to... eat?

He has the queerest group of friends because Klune knows we stick together and form packs. Jazz and Gibby's relationship was so sweet and pure, and I identify so much with Jazz. I also recognize how much Klune has grown as a writer, because the women and their relationships have so much more care put into them. Also I think Klune has such an insight into the minds of Gen Z. It felt so real.

But in my opinion, the best relationship in the book is Nick relationship with his dad. Don't get me wrong, the puppy-love romance is tooth-rottingly sweet, but Aaron truly is a great father. Maybe it's just my daddy-issues talking, but the way Aaron is so involved in Nick's life from the in-depth safe sex talks that he had to do research to prepare for because Nick is gay. This man cares. He's also a cop. Now, ACAB but also I do appreciate that this is a part of the genre: vigilantes and cops are two sides of one messed-up American coin. So I get it and I do think the story handles this well.

Overall, this is exactly what I want from a YA novel. Something that doesn't take itself too seriously, but to the teen characters it's just serious enough that the stakes are interesting. Even though I'm no longer a teen, I am so happy to have read this book.
