🎈HAPPY 🎉 GOTCHA 🎁 DAY 🎂, BRATANIK! 🐢 🇷🇺 💚 I love scrolling through Instagram to see everyone's awesome lives, but I realize I rarely ever post my own, other than the occasional coloring page or pet's birthday... and today is no exception! Ha! 12 years ago this week, I adopted this little dude into my family and have never regretted it for a second. He had a rough start, due to the fact that his previous home kept him pretty terribly (wrong cage, wrong diet, etc) and then literally dropped him off in a shoebox outside Petco before it even opened on a chilly autumn morning, but after much due homework (already had my #turtle, Tortuga, but Bratanik was my first #tortoise) he proved to be a fighter (in the nicest sense of the word... He's tough, but also still has THE best temperament ever and is just a sweetheart to the many, many children he helped teach over the years.) but became and remains healthy, hardy... and just plain a-Dork-able! Since Brat was 40ish when I brought him home (and Russians are a pretty small species as Turtles and Tortoises go), I don't take as many "Oh look how fun he's grown!" type pics as I do with his cousin, Tortuga, so I just picked a fun Halloweenish one from back when we taught at #ThanksgivingPoint. It also just suits him, because feeding him his salads and watching him patiently "Nom Nom Nom" away under his sun lamp really does make me feel like I am raising a miniature dinosaur. He is such a good boy, and probably the only "baby" I will have that is older than me! So, yeah. Happy #GotchaDay, #MyShellBaby! Many (many MANY... It's Angel's Birthday So I though I'd give her a tribute to what she's been through... Angel's Evolution Angel started off as a small puppy, scared and sick. She came from a home of abuse. My mother and I were ready to take her brother as well for my brother. We were unable to have him however because he was in too bad of a condition. Her brother had, had his tail cut off without proper medical procedure not too mention that isn't a common practice with Australian Cattle Dogs. We're not a fan of cutting anything off any dog anyway. He was left with it cut off too far leaving with nothing but a large wound. His bladder had been damaged so he couldn't go properly. He'd walk and dribble so the rescuer, Gloria had to keep him. Angel, his sister had come from the same home. She was too small, mostly skin and bones. Her fur was shades darker then it was supposed to be and later, petting her we found scabs coming off her skin. She was terrified of everything and everyone. After my parents separated because of some serious problems that had been tearing us all apart, I was left feeling isolated and alone. Both my parents had issues that couldn't be simply fixed. My younger brother was lost in how to feel, usually angry but hanging on to be with our father amongst his state. It was usually my mom and I. It was during this time my mother got me Angel. I went though this time first starting in a high school and dealing with being diagnosed with every other thing till we finally came down to what was really wrong. Dealing with various mental health issues and thinking I was a freak left it hard to want to continue living in a life that left so damaging. When Angel came along it gave me a chance to focus on something else. I spent time making sure she wasn't afraid of me. I sat on the floor with her and combed fingers through dirty fur as gently as possible. I fed her from my hands when she didn't want to eat. We bathed her multiple times as the first few times the brown water didn't fully rinse clear. I let her up onto my bed where she would curl up with me when we both needed to be calm. she helped me rid of my constant nightmares and gave me a reason to want to stay. When I was a bit older I experienced an accident with Angel. I was hit by a car and left lying still on the road. When I looked up we weren't too far from home and Angel had remembered where we were. She ran back to our door and sat there whining at the door for my mom and giving me focus. When I was scared she was there, when I was approached by the wrong people she'd growl and keep herself close. When I was upset and crashing in my own mind she knew to be there, to curl up with me and nudge at my face. When I came home crying and sat by the door she nuzzled my face and dropped her favourite stuffed animal into my lap. When we lost our second dog, both our friend we cuddled together every night and especially when Angel realized he wasn't coming back. When she'd whine in the evening and we'd just lay still together. Angel was a rescue that my mother and I brought into our home and nursed back to the bright a healthy dog she is today. She runs about, jumping and flipping over for belly rubs. Her fur is a bright white and her colours are vibrant, clean and clear without the dirt. She gets attention just walking out the door being the beautiful pup she has grown to be. Now she's a little older her joints are a little slower. Some days she needs a lift getting onto the bed and she needs a little more time going up the stairs. She still always waits for me, always looks back to be sure I'm there and curls up with me at night. Although my mother and I rescued her, its always felt like it went both ways. The day my mother brought Angel to me was the day she gave me the greatest gift of my life. We've grown up together and ever day we take it one at a time and have both become stronger for it. Fortunately we didn't just rescue Angel, she rescued me too.

Violet went with mom to donate supplies to our local animal shelter. At first she was terrified since she came from a shelter but then mom told her they were there to help other fur babies and she got happy. Then she saw the dog house and things got real again. Even the sweet volunteer couldn't make Violet shake her nerves cause she could hear all the barking and meowing and she was scared she was going to be abandoned. She got better though as they walked back to the car but then got worried for all those precious fur babies and didn't wanna leave them. RESCUE A SHELTER PET TODAY.
