Respecting Your Parents When Living Under Their Roof
My sister was a very rebellious teen. The reason that she gave for being rebellious was really small. She complained that as the oldest kid in the house, she always had the responsibility of taking care of me and all the younger cousins. She said that she had to wear a lot of hats that my parents burdened her with. Basically, she had a lot of responsibilities at home and she felt that it was too much for her.
But, she was really complaining because she wanted to be able to go out clubbing with friends (she was 18 at the time, so these are underage clubs) or WHATEVER the hell she was doing out there (We don’t actually know where she went)… ANYWAY, she wanted to do these things without any curfews.
The problem was that she would go out with her friends as soon as my parents came home from work around 5 or 6 PM, and she would return home at 2 or 3 AM. My parents allowed it for a few nights, but she started to do this every single day during the summer after she graduated high school. She would even keep testing my parents’ limits and increasing the time. 5AM. 6AM. Sometimes, never. She would never come home.
It got to a point where my parents would never see her because she would leave right before or right when they came home from work. In the morning, my sister would return home ONLY after my parents left to go to work. Sometimes, they would even ask me where she was or if she was home—and I had NO idea because my sister never confided in me. We’re 3 years apart and she never told me where she was. She didn’t text me at all.
The only reason she would have to talk to me is to ask me if mom or dad were home or not. So she became very sneaky and she was lying to everyone all the time.
Every single night she was going out, from sunday to sunday. And sometimes my parents would catch her and they would get into really bad fights with each other. My sister would insist that she was 18 and she was an adult, she could do whatever she wanted…But my parents would argue that she still lived in their house and had to follow their rules.
Here’s the thing. IF you still live in your parent’s house, (which my sister did at this time)…you have to follow their rules.
Now, everyone’s situation is different, but here is the likely situation: You don’t pay the rent or mortgage to live there. Until you have your own place AND your own job, you are not a responsible adult. You have no idea how life works! If you are going “clubbing” every single night, and I mean EVERY NIGHT—you are irresponsible.
You might think, well, I’m a kid. I should be able to party. I should be able to do whatever I want.
Actually, no. Not when your parents say, “no” and you live with them.
My parents actually allowed us a good amount of freedom. So my sister had a good amount of freedom, she was just supposed to come home at an appropriate time.
Because you are a kid, you are not responsible in any capacity. Trust me, I’ve been there.
But the thing is, your parents are responsible for you.
Believe me when I say, your parents care about you and they are doing this because they are concerned about your safety or your behavior. They are only looking out for you. And there are always special exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, you should not be avoiding your parents on purpose.
