on again off again ricstar except only in the way i think about it and NOT in the way marvel did it. together throughout x-force, beginning towards the middle of camp verde arc. rictor starts the cycle of running when things get hard, leaving for mexico when the telepathic link is proposed. shatterstar continues it, leaving ric in mexico. x-factor investigations era their relationship is dysfunctional but not because of peter david’s biphobia but because they are trying so hard to reconcile the person they loved in their teens with the person in front of them + they are both very traumatized and that causes problems as it realistically would—on and off throughout that but still deeply love each other. patch things up and are strong, but star becomes restless. they dont fully break up like in shatterstar mini but face similar struggles. back together. ric fake dies in the enture age of x-men thing, shatterstar struggles with it and also struggles with the fact that he cant just erase the grief he felt now that rictor is back. rictor become distant because of this. an entire "why mourn me if im still here" / "because you werent, and i thought you were never coming back." both have the gut instinct to run away from their emotions, and therefore each other. krakoa happens, and rictor's powers go haywire. shatterstar tries to help but rictor pushes him away even more and self-isolates. at some point during this time shatterstar ends up on mojoworld and under mojo’s control. rictor doesn’t know what actually happened and thinks shatterstar ran away when things got hard, again. cue anger at shatterstar and guilt, believing that he is the reason star left + being left listless and explains a lot of how he was manipulated by apocalypse. star comes back, they are rocky for a bit but get so much therapy and also nearly die with each other which fixes them. for now. i will update my belief system as further comics are released

i've kinda said this already but i think shatterstar's fav pokemon is duoblade

rictor's teams are just pokemon he thinks are cool (mainly ground, rock, and grass types but some others on occasion) but shatterstar does actual Teambuilding Stuff.

shatterstar's basically a competitive player but he doesn’t do any iv breeding stuff

i think i implied this w the other thing but rictor always chooses the grass starter

they both get the opposite games (for example: 'star got y but ric got x) and they Have argued over who gets which one

'star obviously got sword (bc swords). he also got silver + sapphire/alpha sapphire + fire red + white (bc his costumes usually have a lot of it)

rictor got gold + ruby/omega ruby (bc earth) + leaf green (bc leaf) + black + shield

when scarlet and violet are out rictor's getting scarlet and shatterstar is getting violet (bc it's the future one)

im not sure abt the others

The RicStar Anniversary Week 2024 will be held June 21-27, 2024.

The purpose of this event is to celebrate 15 years since the first kiss between Rictor and Shatterstar which happened on the pages of X-Factor #45 on June 24, 2009, which not only was the first gay kiss between two superheroes in Marvel, but it also confirmed years of romantic subtext between the characters. Personal thoughts:

I gotta say, I'm still feeling incredibly ambivalent about this book.

I mean, a Mystique/Destiny wedding is great! Ya love to see it and its long overdue, but I think this would've been better served as a one-shot alongside the main pride story this rather, rather than in place of it.

Most of these stories sound really fun, like for example: a Rogue/Gambit side story involving a wedding band mishap! That sounds hilarious!

But, for a Pride-centric issue, its really lacking in the Pride department. No one outside of the x-books this year, and even the x-couples are lacking!

I mean, to name a few: Northstar and Kyle, Rictor and Shatterstar, Iceman and whoever he's dating right now (lol), Cerebella and Escapade, Akihiro and Aurora (he's still bi, straight-passing relationship or not), the list goes on!

I don't know, I'm just frustrated. The stories themselves seem fine, its just the branding/packaging that's rubbing me the wrong way, if that makes sense.

Except the Wolverine story. We literally have a confirmed/canon queer member of the snikt fam (who, at bare minimum, has had a flirtation with Mystique as well), and he's still ded :(

Like, if they wanted a Wolverine-centric story, why not have Gabby finally explore her sapphic feelings for that girl on the bus? Let her have a little heart-to-heart with Akihiro, drag Logan to a Pride parade (then, he accidently gets roped into a side quest involving a group of short trans-mascs, ending with Logan buying them a round of beers). My point is, there are ways to add your money-maker character into stories while still respecting your target audience.

I don't know. My feelings are complicated.

hi there! ive always loved your history posts, and was wondering if you had any insights/directions you could point me in to learn more about a specific area of queer history?

im personally most well-read on the history of gay men in britain between the labouchere amendment and ww2, so a pretty specific area. i dont know very much at all about the history of queer women, though id think its harder to get primary sources for them as the legal records wouldnt exist in the same way?

anyway, my main question is actually about cross-gender solidarity. i notice that a lot of the men i read about operated in very gender segregated spaces, which was typical for the era anyway and ofc there are plenty of spaces today where gay men want to be with other gay men exclusively. i suppose im wondering if there's any way of investigating how much queer men in the past would have felt solidarity with queer women, and how to look at whether/how those sentiments changed over time?

i realise this is a bit more of a "how to do history" question than about history proper - any insight or thoughts you'd like to share about this would also be really appreciated! and in either case, hope you're having a great week xx

First, thanks! Glad to help.

Second, the difficulty of doing premodern queer history largely or exclusively from legal documents is that a) it gives us a distorted version of what degree of prejudice actually existed in society, on a practical and not just theoretical level, and b) it makes it even more difficult (if not impossible) to speculate on what people "really" felt, thought, or personally identified. (I currently have a book chapter about John/Eleanor Rykener in the peer-review process, which touches on some of this difficulty, since our only major source in that case is also a legal record.) We are very rarely granted direct access to the actual voices or perspectives of premodern queer people, and if it's filtered through a hostile framework that has an interest in minimizing that person's existence and/or social experience, it provides an even more excessively or solely negative picture than is probably at all the case.

However, I would gently challenge your idea that it's harder to get primary sources on queer women, since the assumption is that premodern queer men are only memorialized by their (presumably punitive) encounters with the legal system, and that society cared less about female homosexuality and thus did not attempt to police it in the same way. Both ideas have some degree of truth, but not entirely and certainly not categorically, and there are many ways to access premodern queer experience and memorialization. I don't know what particular time/region you're interested in, but since you said Britain, I will once more recommend checking out the website of gay British historian Rictor Norton. He has everything, and I mean everything, you could possibly want as a resource/starting point (his specialty is 18th-20th century British LGBT history):

Now, obviously I haven't combed through all of these to see if there is something that specifically addresses the question of premodern mlm/wlw solidarity, but since queer spaces have often been a lot more gender-mixed than people tend to think, there are certainly more than enough resources to get you clicking and searching.

The raven flaps its wings, carrying a doggy bag that is obviously slowing it down. It circles the neighborhood as if looking for something or someone, until it finally spots one particular blonde witch. Cawing, the raven descends toward Rictor and its feathers suddenly change color into pearl white. It drops the bag on Rictor's hands before landing on his shoulder.

And a second later, the familiar transforms back into the human form, and Hugh stands beside Rictor with his hand on the shoulder. Thankfully, the charm he wears almost at all times transform the clothes with him when he shifts. "You're turning 40 soon, Rictor. I shouldn't be babysitting you to–" He pauses mid-sentence, grimacing as if he is having an acute migraine. 'It is not babysitting, it is our duty to assist him in any way possible, including attending to his wants and needs,' the voice in his head echoes and drowns out his own thoughts, like it has been for the last hour. Hugh pushes down the urge to scream 'shut up' at Monrad talking inside his head, and continues to speak with a forced smile. "–babysit you to eat your dinner in time."

Sighing, Hugh grabs the doggy bag, opens it and hands Rictor a sandwich. Rictor's favorite, of course, because his favorite menus are just something Hugh knows. Or at least Monrad does. He grabs his sandwich and takes a bite out of it. "...so what are we looking for?"

jpv 2) probably after reading sword of azrael '92. i had a mutual who was posting a lot of jpv stuff and i had previously read tynion's writing of her in tec 2016, and then my lcs had a trade collecting soa 92 + the first seven issues of azrael '95 so i went "fuck it" and bought it. i can't remember if i read what was available of watters' stuff at the time before or after soa 92 but that was definitely where i started to really love jp/az and it's stuck with me (as you can tell by the url)

jpv 7) FOREVER AND EVER the "perhaps this azrael does both" quote from sword of azrael (1992) #3. technically it is alfred talking ABOUT jp/az in response to nomoz saying that azrael punishes, and doesn't/shouldn't think. and then there's also the soa '92 #4 of azrael straight up telling nomoz "no" when nomoz says they need to leave, because azrael only avenges, not rescue. either way i think those are really interesting and have Stuck With Me

jpv 14) i know i'm an soa 92 type boy but....this one is definitely a hard one and i don't think soa is in my top two choices. i'd have to say his no man's land arc, i'm a huge fan of it and his dynamics with other bat charas (esp babs and cass!). my second choice pick would probably be soa '22--i just love it so much and it's so beautiful. so while soa '92 might be my favorite, i don't think it's his absolute best. but it's top 3 for sure

jpv 27) the most fun, for me particularly? i think castiel from supernatural. i have no idea what the fuck would go down, but it would be entertaining. other than that, probably vash or knives (or livio/razlo) from trimax specifically, or sister lilith from warrior nun. lets just get all those religious imagery bitches in a room together and see what goes down

star 1) so i THINK my first impression of star was in young avengers: children's crusade, WAY back when i first started reading comics. like young avengers '05 was my first comic, and ya:cc my second. i think i just looked at him and rictor on panel together and, knowing nothing about them, was like okay yeah they are DEFINITELy gay. i probably thought he was a little weirdo (affectionate) but i didn't become a fan of him and rictor for another year or two i think

star 20) star is the only person in the world who actually MEANS it when he says "i listen to a little of everything" about his music taste. he really genuinely listens to everything, and everyone who knows him HATES when he's on aux because listening to his playlists gives them whiplash. seriously, he goes from mid 1800s orchestral music to hyperpop to 90s hip hop to 00s top 40 to 1960s bluegrass to music you're not even sure is from this dimension and that you're pretty sure is from some future timeline. star sees no problem with it, though. also i think he takes really long showers and uses up ALL of the hot water + has a really extensive hair/skin routine. so you go into the bathroom of his and ric's apartment and you see the shower and sink counter practically overflowing with all these extravagant and fancy products and then in the corner there are like 4 or 5 things that belong to rictor and it's just shampoo/conditioner/body wash/other essentials

star 23) i want him to live happily ever after with ric in a cozy house with weekly therapy appointments and dinner with his parents every month + an actually good/existent relationship with them where they aren't just kinda coworkers and maybe a dog or a couple cats and a garden in the backyard and a giant tv in the living room and a good relationship with life and maybe a couple college degrees or maybe he just learns so much about the things that interest him and everything else without feeling the need to have a degree to show for it and andand. but i don't think that will ever happen because marvel hates me personally

but the way rictor adjusts his glasses is different in different scenarios and moods. thumb and index on the rim of the glasses when he's in his element and the mood is pretty chill and he's in control. then the same thumb and index combo on the hinges when something is happening and shit is serious and/or maybe he has to concentrate. but in both, he's very specifically taking measured care not to touch the lens. and then of course, there's the messy adjustment (by his standards anyway) where he just grabs the hinges, no doubt touching the lens in the meanwhile, during high stakes situations and the like.

bonus: when takes off his glasses, thumb and middle finger on the rim, and index on the temple.

he also has his wedding ring on his pinky finger which he fidgets with a lot.

Thanks for giving me a chance to rant about my fave Badass Diva, babe! Others feel free to send in a name and choose particular things

Why I like them: I really loved how tenacious and driven she was to reach her personal goals and doesnt like to compromise on that but she's still such a caring person that she cant help but jump in to help or save people as a hero, even tho she continually said she didnt wanna be a hero. Just her compassion for people in general, even who I wouldnt think deserve her compassion: 

Her first thought in both instances with her stalker, Karl Fredricks (Dazzler #26 & Uncanny X-Men ‘63 #260), is to reason with him and try to keep him from getting hurt. Also when battling him one of her main concerns is him hurting anyone else before she thinks of him hurting her.

Why I don't: There arent really points about her I don't like. I guess my biggest gripes are that writers tend to relegate her to a gimmick cameo character more often than not and miss opportunities to showcase her immense powerset range and the deep connections she has with a large portion of the not just other X-Men characters but the other marvel heroes as well. 

Also just the original fact the editors didnt allow her to be based on Grace Jones, like John Romita Jr. intended. It would've been noce to have another dark skinned Black woman hero, with star power outside of Ororo Munroe. And gosh the way they probably couldve bonded and had eachother to lean on. There's just so many "what ifs" that woulda probs changed not only Ali's trajectory but the Xmen/Marvel universe at large. But I still love Ali as she is now too. 

Favorite scene (imma do arc): The "What If" arc of Ali as Galactus' long time herald. The way she found away to discover new planets for him to devour but made sure that they didnt have sentient life that'd be destoryed in that consumption! Ugh says so much about her character!! In general-- Ali and Julio "Rictor" Richter, another rp exploration with the lovely @myvalentina Ric's technically Ali's, son-in-law but through lots of interdimensional travel hyjinks and stuff. I never know what canon ages truly are but I feel like Ali is less than 10 years his senior and so she's like a big sister and friend to him and it's just really wholesome

In canon-- Ali and Longshot, they've been through so much and if im not mistaken, literally share pieces of eachothers' souls and while things never work out romantically with them in all the times they get back together, I just love the idea of them still being besties regardless

Headcanon:

Gives amazing hugs, doesn't let go till the other person starts to pull away. Read somewhere once about being this way with kids cause you never know how little someone gets of contact and how they might need that physical reassurance.

Personally I don't wanna see Queen B or Taylor S. portray Dazzler in any future media

While Dazzler had global reach and star power in her prime within the Marvel universe, I just would love others to portray her. My top pick was and always will be Kylie Minogue, but that ship has probs sailed, so more contemporary picks are Janelle Monáe, JoJo, Kesha or Zara Larsson

A wish: She gets to be in some arcs where the writers truly understand her and let her shine fully--iving on top that it happens with an artists that stays true to her strawberry blonde haircolor
