Personal thoughts:

I gotta say, I'm still feeling incredibly ambivalent about this book.

I mean, a Mystique/Destiny wedding is great! Ya love to see it and its long overdue, but I think this would've been better served as a one-shot alongside the main pride story this rather, rather than in place of it.

Most of these stories sound really fun, like for example: a Rogue/Gambit side story involving a wedding band mishap! That sounds hilarious!

But, for a Pride-centric issue, its really lacking in the Pride department. No one outside of the x-books this year, and even the x-couples are lacking!

I mean, to name a few: Northstar and Kyle, Rictor and Shatterstar, Iceman and whoever he's dating right now (lol), Cerebella and Escapade, Akihiro and Aurora (he's still bi, straight-passing relationship or not), the list goes on!

I don't know, I'm just frustrated. The stories themselves seem fine, its just the branding/packaging that's rubbing me the wrong way, if that makes sense.

Except the Wolverine story. We literally have a confirmed/canon queer member of the snikt fam (who, at bare minimum, has had a flirtation with Mystique as well), and he's still ded :(

Like, if they wanted a Wolverine-centric story, why not have Gabby finally explore her sapphic feelings for that girl on the bus? Let her have a little heart-to-heart with Akihiro, drag Logan to a Pride parade (then, he accidently gets roped into a side quest involving a group of short trans-mascs, ending with Logan buying them a round of beers). My point is, there are ways to add your money-maker character into stories while still respecting your target audience.

I don't know. My feelings are complicated.

The bit of the issue I’m drawing is where Lore faces off with our Wanda — I’m thrilled to draw it! 😈 SCARLET WITCH issue 3, out in August — written by Steve Orlando, interior art by me alongside series artist Jacopo Camagni, main cover drawn/colored by me!

Lore is a demonic Wanda variant, so I wanted to contrast my design for our Wanda. I wanted the Scarlet Witch design to be magical, vibrant, and super-heroic. For Lore, I tried to contrast that by going dark and sinister, with a goth, undead vibe.

Based on the pages, Laura is either successfully rescued by X-Force/somehow she makes it out unscathed and joins up with them. Then then face some sentinel-mecha-hybrid things made by Graydon.

Logan somehow defeats Sabretooth and it'll conclude with him also facing Graydon.

Either there's a flashback or Logan goes all macho and drops the armor to fight Sabretooth one last time, mano a mano (I'm betting on the latter at this point)

I will say, the Hama/Picciotto story looks so promising to me. It's probably going to be a great bit of nostalgia for classic fans of Wolverine, and I'm looking forward to it!

Though, when they said "back-up tales," I was kind of expecting more than 2 writers? Like, it's just Larry Hama (which I mean, amazing, great choice) and also Ben Percy. Who is also writing the main story.

I have scoured Both X-Men Forever #2 and Rise of the Powers of X #4 and I have obtained the hints!

Hope's speech in Rise of the Powers of X #4

Forget-Me-Not, a.k.a Xabi! He was actually killed in Legion of X #10 (Before the Fall). If they're willing to bring him back, why not some Sabretooth War deaths?

I mean, that probably also means the refugee mutant deaths, like Artie, are going to stay dead for now :(

I looked very closely and didn't see anyone that even remotely resembled Akihiro, but let me be delusional, m'kay?

It seems like all the "civilian mutants" are going to stay in the White Hot Room for now.

Wolverine #48 Spoilers (and also heavy ranting):

It was boring.

Somehow, even LESS happened than the past two issues.

I mean, what even is the plot at this point? What are the character motivations?

Laura made her grand escape, which was nice. But also, why would Graydon or "Bad Seed" even be interested in her in the first place?

His main interest is his father, yes?

I guess he does hate mutants in general, but if I were him, I would've intentionally let her escape so she could lead me to the main fight.

Also, what was even the point of attacking the bears? Logan literally said "don't kill them" and immediately stabbed one. Master hunter-tracker wild man couldn't go around? lead them away? Bears are generally skittish and don't really go out of their way to attack people unless provoked. UNLESS they're food-conditioned by raiding dumpsters and such, but this is in the middle of nowhere in Alaska. There's no people food to eat.

Logan disabled one -- which is usually a death sentence in the wild by the way. And that's assuming it ran away after Logan did that. But usually they would fight back after fucking stabbing them.

Nekra fucking flipped one and presumably knocked it out (???) Third Eye put the third one to sleep.

Also also, grizzly bears are solitary. If that was supposed to be a mother and two cubs, the cubs are WAY too big to be with their mama still.

Those bears were depicted as well-muscled/well-fed/basically NOT starving at all. They wouldn't be that attack-happy over a fish (maybe a bit protective over a huge carcass, but my point still stands). I mean, assuming you don't walk right up to them! They'd make some bear threats first, in which an experienced hunter with keen animal-like senses *cough cough* would know to back off.

Keep your distance and you're good. They literally had to walk quite a distance further for that stupid bunker. Literally just go around. No need for this.

I'm sorry, this isn't how bears work at all. They can be territorial, but an experienced woodsman would know how to avoid the conflict. Especially since they weren't even caught unaware by said bears.

And the narrative around Logan remains redundant:

When will I be free of this?

THEY DO THIS EVERY TIME HE LOSES HIS HEALING FACTOR!

Last time he went on an introspective monologue like this, he went on a grand death tour and got got encased in molten adamantium! Then Laura became Wolverine :)

But they do this every time. Nothing about these plot choices are original, or even a fresh retelling of a Wolverine-esque story. It's not even vaguely interesting. At best, they're the safe choice, but I think its just lazy and lacks direction.

How the fuck is it a relief? How the fuck are you a "walking carcass?" You don't even have that cool eye scar anymore.

Also, your fucking son had a healing factor and STILL died. How do you think he feels about that, hm?

It irritates me especially because Aki isn't even mentioned beyond those preview pages. For all that shock value they did, and he still ends up being a passing thought.

I am repeatedly banging my head against a wall, I swear.

(Send Aurora in to smack him around a little. It's greatly needed).

Anyway, Laura made her grand escape by lowerng defenses to alert the sentinels and Bad Seed Graydon was able to hack them. X-Force was also alerted to the situation and Black Tom is using his veg powers to grow a rescue ship.

I guess this could lead up to a Graydon vs. Laura situation? Kid vs kid? But I don't know anymore. The plot is all over the place.

Creed ended up being encased in a sort of psuedo-egg as well, but burst out of it.

We don't see anything beyond that, but maybe he was transformed somehow? Maybe he's weaker? stronger? who knows.

I am disappointed. I wanted the seed to do something a bit more than this. There's still time, I guess. But I remain disappointed for now.

I stand even firmer in my belief that this Sabretooth War should count as one of those "Orchis Purges" and Aki, and all the other dead mutants should be ressurected as such from the White Hot Room. Scarlet Witch #1 Pride Allies Variant by Davi Go

Wanda looks really pretty. Angela also looks great. And the composition is really nice.

But I still just don't get the point of this?

Like here, the art is pretty and its well done. But so far its just been a random queer character standing next to the hero of the book?

I don't think Rachel and Daredevil have ever had any meaningful interaction, and it's been decades since Spider-man interacted with Northstar (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't positive)

Here is a little better, because Scarlet Witch recently interacted with Loki, but it still doesn't feel like a Pride Variant, you know? They're just next to each other on the same cover.

They're just not doing anything Pride-related -- like maybe going to a Pride parade, volunteering at an LGBTQ+ youth center, etc? I don't know. Like, the art is quality, and on their own, they're fine variant covers, just not as the official Pride variant line-up this year.

General housekeeping before I proceed with the Roast Fest

I want to make this explicitly clear: it is not my intention to hate on the artists themselves nor their art skills or anything along those lines.

Betsy Cola and Davi Go are both extremely talented and skilled artists. Support their work. Art is fucking hard and its even harder to actually get paid for it.

Betsy Cola is a queer Filipina and has an Instagram Page (but no online shop for prints). Lots of fun retro style (think 50s-60s-70s Pop Art)

Davi Go does have an INPRNT with lots of Marvel and DC Characters. Like nine different Emma Frost prints alone. A couple of lovely Laura Kinney and much more. For fine Art Prints, artists earn like 50% of the sale, I'm pretty sure.

I personally have no idea what goes into getting contracted to do any cover by Marvel, but I'm sure it was absolutely thrilling to get to do ANY work by a big company such as Marvel, where so many would get to see something I had made. I also have no idea how much an artist is told when they are contracted to make something. (Do they get told what it's for, or are they just given a generalized prompt? I truly have no idea)

I do know, that personally for me, doing ANYTHING of that caliber would be a dream come true. I've been reading comic books since I was five/six years old. While I only make shitty little fans arts and the occasional fanfic, if by some astronomical chance, I was offered to write or do a cover, I would absolutely jump on the chance. Or at least strongly consider it.

I am specifically critiquing Marvel's decisions as corporation to even come up with and sign off on something as obnoxious (and frankly, insulting) as "Pride Allies" for a variant series. Especially considering the overarching fact that historically Marvel has had its fair share of issues regarding its treatment of its queer characters -- lack of consistent appearances/storytelling, questionable treatment/writing choices, and blatant rainbow washing during Pride month to give a few generalizations (pick your favorite example, there's a lot). Sometimes its enjoyable to poke fun at company's ridiculous marketing ideas.

Much like the fact last winter they did a "Ski Chalet" variant series with skiing and snow activities, yet somehow didn't find an artist to do a variant of their ONE CANON OLYMPIC SKIIER.

But I digress.

In Summary: the act of creation is beautiful, don't be a douche canoe. Being punk is anti-establishment, not anti-people.

I genuinely do NOT see the point in pairing up a queer character with a random more popular Marvel hero. I repeat my question, who the hell signed off on this?

In my personal opinion, its just new lows in performative allyship and rainbow washing and whatever kind of marketing you wanna call it.
