I’d love to hear more about The Picture Bride for the WIP tag game
Thank you for asking! This one is a post-WWI AU based on the premise of how matchmakers would sometimes arrange for women to emigrate to the U.S. to marry men who were seeking wives particularly from their own home countries. Oftentimes they would have shared only brief correspondences with one another before meeting and sometimes they would marry immediately upon their arrival at their destination, and in some cases they would have no more information about their proposed spouse except for a picture, hence the title. (Now that I describe it this way this seems much more of a century ago version of a 90-Day Fiance than I realized lol)
So Sansa has such an arrangement with Harry, set up by Petyr, to come to the U.S. after the Starks and Robb were lost during the war and their estate is running out of money and she is still responsible for supporting Bran and Rickon, but she happens to meet Jon on her journey instead.
Here is a snippet:
He caught her eye from across the way—dark hair, dark eyes, a kind of melancholy that made her wonder. He couldn’t have looked less like Harry Hardyng, if she told the truth. He reminded her of Waymar Royce, the son of one of her father’s friends who had visited their estate when Sansa had hardly been more than a girl, but yet she’d still fancied him.
“Go talk to him,” Margaery hissed, following her line of sight.
She had always dreamed of marrying someone like Waymar Royce, but then the war had come and he had left along with the rest of the boys and never come back, Robb also one of them. Except he was very much alive, evidenced by the way he threw back his head and laughed at the whisperings of one of his friends, the action in stark contrast to his broodiness.
“You have the rest of your life to be a married woman,” Margaery cajoled. Her brother Loras had left for the States a few years past, and he had arranged a marriage for her to one of the friends he’d made there, a Mr. Renly Baratheon.
“All right.” She stood up and brushed off her skirts.

Doe and Robb are soulmates they just don’t know it yet (especially our babygirl Doe)
Whether or not it was intentional, Cersei (and kinda Robert) is a great matchmaker 👌
Politically, everyone, including Tywin Lannister, think it's a smart match.
Robert probably made that match so he'd been closer to Ned.
And Cersei-- well, let's just say she didn't fight against this union. At least not as much as she did when Myrcella was sent to Dorne.

Going by GRRM's logic if princesses can't marry someone lowborn bc it's unrealistic, as he was consulted on this likely new Kit's project, wouldn't it be contradictory if Jon (as he's not a bastard) ends up with a random or Val as many have been speculating?
Well, I think we’re gonna have to keep in mind that this sequel is taking place in the Game of Thrones cinematic universe, not ASOIAF which makes it pretty hard to say what can/can’t happen.
And this show isn’t merely in GoT-verse, it’s a direct follow-up and the problem there is that what s7-8 didn't make nonsensical, they left unclear. In s7 I thought it would have made more sense for Jon to have suggested a marriage alliance with Dany (or Tyrion or Davos, our darling matchmakers), but instead D&D had him bend the knee and then had the advisors talk about marriage in s8 when it was totally pointless? Like, Dany had the North, she could use marriage to peacefully bring another region into the fold. So, at that point the logic wasn’t really present and if Kit was influenced by that, where the relationships are  distinct from the political situation, I’m not sure that Martin would be able to course correct this until it makes sense with his opinion.
And, more to the point of your question, the confusion in which D&D left everyone means we don’t even know if Jon is still known as Ned’s bastard or if the news of his parentage got out? Varys found out about Jon and attempted to send that information elsewhere, but I don't know that he succeeded? It may only be the Starks, Tyrion, and Sam who know about it, and since D&D didn't include Robb's will, Jon isn't a legitimized Stark either. Of course, D&D did have him riding around on a dragon, so the Northerners might put two-and-two together in the sequel, it all depends on which story Kit wants to tell. The show could open with his parentage being common knowledge, or the show could take place entirely removed from the Northern Lords and be about Jon and the FF where Jon’s parents don’t matter / the political stuff isn’t a consideration.
Now, even if his parentage isn’t known, as a former king, if we’re thinking about the politics, Jon 100% cannot have kids or it would be a threat to Sansa’s reign. Does Kit think that? Idk! And, even if it isn’t common knowledge, since he knows he was the heir to the Iron Throne, you’d think that would make him hesitate as well or his kids/grandkids might be used against the realm. Does Kit think that? Idk! I also don’t know how much Martin will push to make any of this reasonable. I believe he gives notes on scripts, I don’t know that he gets to give an emphatic no to any developments? And even if they all wanted to bring it closer to ASOIAF because of those developments in GoT, they may be screwed.
As in, in the books it’s possible Jon refuses to be legitimized a Stark or crowned king which means he would have the freedom to marry/have kids without it being a threat to Sansa/her kids after the dust settles. If that’s Martin’s endgame, he might allow it even though in GoT, not only is Jon a legitimate Targ, he was also KitN. So yeah, I would agree with you that marrying a rando doesn’t quite work in that world, but then again, Jon has no political position, so maybe they’ll decide it doesn’t matter? Martin can’t walk back what D&D did, and maybe he’ll be happy with something let’s a little less offensive than s7-8. And they are really leaning into Jon being a Snow for the show (title, Kit made some comments...), so it’s hard to say.
Going back to the confusion in s8 tho, not only do we not know who knows what about Jon’s ancestry, we ended the show not even knowing if Jon was in the Watch/leading it, or if Bran was telling him he was free to go live with the FF which is, to some, what the closing shot indicated. I had one impression, the next day when I got online I saw fans and critics alike all coming to different conclusions, in the months that followed Kit said Jon was with the FF, one of the D’s said he was still in the Watch. I believe different things posted by HBO gave different impressions...It was a mess.
However, Kit’s recent comments made it sound like Jon is at the Wall, and if he’s in the Watch, the question of marriage would be off the table. He could still have an affair, even a kid (insert my previously stated objections), but unless Sansa or Bran (we don’t even know how the North being free impacts things with the Watch) pardons him, he’s not going to be marrying officially even if we do ignore the concerns about him being a former king. I mean, I say that, but I suppose now that the Others are defeated maybe the rules will change/the Watch will evolve? Idk!
Ignoring all the political stuff, Kit’s recent comments in which he made a connection between Cat and his romantic partners in a very negative way made me think he wouldn’t want Jon with a similar woman in his sequel, as the goal seems to be getting Jon healed and happy. That surprised me, and it did make me wonder where Jon’s next love interest would be coming from and doubt that it would be Val when it seemed likely before. While Val isn’t a fighter the same way Ygritte was, she still holds the traditional FF beliefs, she’s already talked about killing a kid and threatened to geld men, she even delivered the “You know nothing, Jon Snow” line once which Kit hates. Obviously they could rewrite her personality, but based on what Kit was saying...I’m not sure that Kit would read her scenes and choose her as the love interest.
All of that being said, in the books Stannis intends to legitimize Jon and marry him to Val,because he perceived Val as a princess, making her a viable prospect.  Jon attempts to explain that Stannis is misunderstanding the FF by   calling her such, and we know that he’s right so this really isn’t a great plan. But, Martin did include a character planning to marry Jon and Val for certain  political ends which I believe was the point of the quote about the princess not being able to marry a stable boy. Highborn people marry other highborns because it’s about benefiting the family/doing something for a specific advantage/accumulating wealth or power or solidifying peace etc, so depending on which scenario they start with, I suppose Kit & Co. could try to run with that? As in, they could take the idea of Jon and a woman of the FF marrying to try to help the two cultures coexist? At the behest of Bran and Sansa who first pardon Jon an then offer him his own lands?  A lot of us thought the idea of the FF going back beyond the Wall was odd, so maybe they’re thinking about going with a settling the Gift idea and this could be included with that.
I suppose I just don’t know what the limits are for the writers and none of the cast or Martin himself have criticized s7-8, so it’s really hard to know what to think!

I seek to hold the wind
Chapter 2
Gif by @byaseashore
Tumblr media
Just as she had hoped, they managed to lose their companions.
Fiona can be heard giggling and last she saw Jon was beet red when Wynie batted her eyelashes and said she heard he was good with a sword.
“Did you ride often in the Vale?” Robb asks as he matched her pace.
“Every morning to my great-aunt's displeasure.” She answered.
Ironoaks had been lovely with its wild ravines and warm summers. Unfortunately, Ironoaks came with great aunt Anya’s sons, grandsons, nephews and any man who thinks they could marry an heiress.
But Lady Anya was lenient with the gaggle of grandchildren, cousins and other young guests and did not see rank or wealth when she did her matchmaking.
So much so Alys Arryn’s eldest daughter made a love match with a household knight and left it in her will that Harry Hardyng be allowed to marry who he pleases ---as long as it is not Myranda Royce nor any of the peasant girls who gladly spread their legs for him.
And yet her leniency had limits.
One of them being Jo’s penchant for riding astride like a man and wearing breeches even after her scorned suitors and jealous kinswomen started saying Jocelyn had lost her maidenhead to the saddle.
The saddle if you were decent, the comely groom who handled her horses if you were not.
So, her fostering came to an end a year ago and finding a husband became mother’s priority after Wayman Royce chose the Wall over her claiming he did not want damaged goods.
Douglas Flint would not give a shit if the rumors were true, he was not a brute and the moment Jo had a child they would happily go their separate ways like most couples do.
And now that Doug is dead, Jo foolishly hopes the boy beside her is brave enough to seek her hand and not believe those awful rumors about her.
Despite how much her mother loathes the Starks, a match between them would be advantageous.
Mother would likely remain her regent until Jocelyn has a son or daughter old enough to take the reigns if Ned Stark accepts the King’s loud hinting of becoming his Hand.
If Ned manages to escape such honor ---or noose as mother and aunt Willamina put it last night--- then Jocelyn and Robb will rule Barrowton until the time comes.
The worst that could happen is Fergus Flint becoming Fergus Dustin and Brandon Stark succeeding Robb.
But that will never happen, the realm is at peace, she and Robb are likely to bring about a brood of children to name alphabetically like her dear aunt did with her nine children.
“Mother had hopes of having me foster with Lord Arryn or Bronze Yohn, but father refused.” He sounds annoyed that everyone else is allowed the joys of fostering the hell away from here except him.
Fostering is good for politics, allows a bit of freedom, some spying and a chance to travel and learn.
Many lords had been shocked when Ned refused to even accept wards in Winterfell, did not bode well with those who were already wary of his southron wife infecting him with her faith and ideals.
Many lords sought wives in the south, but most made sure to keep the ties north strong.
Robb, Sansa and even Jon should have been fostered out as was tradition. Did not bode well when a lord does something like that.
“A good thing, I have heard the late Hand’s household was a nightmare. His poor widow is so deeply unwell she refuses to take wards after something I have only heard about as ‘The Incident’.”
Lysa Tully was a creature deserving of pity not censure, Lady Anya had whispered once.
A once beautiful lady dealt an unbelievably horrific existence ---and suffered the constant mocking of the Wicked Bitch of the West as if her constant pummeling by the Stranger was not enough--- to the point most ladies decided a second husband who won’t mind her eccentricities and ensure the East doesn’t follow her down the Moon Door this autumn is the best course of action.
“Yes, my aunt has not had an easy life.” He says and she remembers Lysa Arryn is his only aunt.
Should she apologize?
No, she thinks, it’s not as if she has told him any of the horror stories she heard and saw during her three years in the Vale.
Jocelyn met her once, Lady Lysa had said Jo had the horse look of the Waynwoods, called her mother a whore and ordered to keep Lady Anya to keep her away lest she open Sweetrobin from navel to collarbone like her father had done to his.
Jo had pointed out that Brandon Stark had been dead for a year by the time she was born and that the one sporting the scar was Petyr Baelish not Lord Arryn only to have her sent down the Eyrie the same day she arrived.
“Besides, you cannot learn to manage Winterfell if you are not here.” Jo adds and guides the conversation to avoid speaking of her aunt’s strange awfulness. “As much as Lady Anya let me shadow her and her stewards, I would have rather learned from my mother at home.”
Different lands, different needs and most importantly different gods.
“I could have seen you more often, either here or in the Vale.” Robb is not as bold as Theon ,but not painfully reserved like his brother.
A rather nice place in the middle, one that has her feeling her cheeks pink up and know it won’t be long until she Lady Stark.
“You may see more of me now, Lord Stark.” She feels breathless when he smiles at her sudden forwardness.
“Robb.” He corrects softly with a quirk in his oh so kissable lips, letting her know this infatuation is mutual. “Call me Robb, Lord Stark is my father.”
Every girl from the Wall to Dorne will weep when they know Robb Stark is hers.
“Then call me Jo.”
Tumblr media
“A match between them would heal the rifts between our families.” Catelyn Stark joined her as they observe their two children in the throws of first love.
It brings a familiar ache in Barbrey’s heart.
When Brandon Stark sweettalked her away from her sense and into his bed one summer night.
“Perhaps, but you know the insult upon my family goes further than that, Lady Stark.” Barbrey would rather have Jocelyn marry little Fergus than one of Stark’s sons.
Contrary to widely held belief, her resentment did not stem from being denied a Stark groom after the elder deflowered her.
No, he hates Stark because he took Willam south and only returned his horse to her.
She had been content, happy even with her husband for those scant six moons she had with him.
He used to write godsawful poetry and send whatever trinket or gift with his letters, she had made him a tartan in the colors of his house and promised him a bony boy he could be proud of the morning he left.
In the end he died rescuing Lyanna Stark and for his sacrifice and valor he was denied his place amongst his ancestors and the son they both desperately needed.
Barbrey loves her daughter, loves her enough to send her to the Vale to keep her from her father’s ambitions.
She was a sweet thing, her Jo, despite Barbrey doing her best to raise a sensible daughter, Jocelyn was still a naïve child of four and ten.
Life would remove whatever naivety and optimism she has soon enough.
“If I could make him bring them from Dorne I could, perhaps once he is Hand of the King---” Catelyn began quietly.
Barbrey has stopped waiting for the day that happens.
Always something.
She knows Catelyn Stark means it when she says she has tried to have her husband bring back the men he buried in Dorne.
But whatever secret lay in the ruins of the Tower of Joy was too painful to make Ned Stark return there with the five bodies left behind.
House Glover, Wull, Ryswell, Dustin and Cassel have asked him to send envoys to Dorne and bring back their dead, and to no avail.
“I will never forgive your husband for that, but I would not be opposed to match between our children, Lady Stark.” The Lady of Barrowton gave a neutral answer, gods forbid Robb Stark takes after his dead uncle and her Jocelyn takes after her.
If the gods are good, Stark will let her set a date far enough for it to never come.

Robb/Jeyne W
Ramsay/Theon/Jeyne P
Mel/Selyse
Beric/Thoros
And a single unproblematic one:
Grenn/Pyp
Hi Tânia...
R0ßß x Jeyne (W)
Tumblr media
I really liked your interpretation of them + a few other authors, but what attracts me the most of it is the mystery in the relationship and since fandom has decided to hold a very (almost insultingly in my opinion) idealistic view of R0ßß it has lost some of it's appeal for me. Weirdly enough I still love them a lot, because they embody some aspects of Germanicus & Agrippina, a couple that I really love. And I overall really like Jeyne and how courageous she is. So yeah, my problem comes mostly from the R0ßß's characterisation always being that of a selfless saint who sacrifices himself for her honour (or worse, gets roofied).
Theon x Ramsay x Jeyne (P)
Tumblr media
“oh my god, we have the same abusive boyfriend”
hellish polycule. I hate it. I genuinely hate Ramsay so much. People keep making Theon the whump protagonist in fanwork by having him suffer, but I want Ramsay to be my whump protagonist. I can't stand that motherfucker. I hope he has the least climactic death in the story because he is simply not worth it. I don't want neither Theon nor Jeyne to ever come near him again because him dying while thinking that they are gone and safe is my favourite fantasy. It would be a huge slight for him.
On the other hand, this is kind of canon and I enjoy all the canon. I love the canon ships for what they are which, in this case, is plain horror. I want to gorge my eyes out whenever I think of it. They make me want to scream. The dynamic in fanwork is less interesting to me because most of the time it just ends up being gratuitous smut or Theon being in love with Jeyne during their captivity which is a huge no for me. (No hate to anyone who enjoys either of those things, they are just boundaries) but if written as in canon (that is implicitly and as horror), then yeah, I'd read a fic.
But viewed through a less serious lens Ramsay CANONICALLY and simultaneously acts as the matchmaker, the third wheel, and the sicko lurking on the window I can't-
Tumblr media
Melisandre x Selyse
Tumblr media
I read it as one-sided canon. It's probably not intended by GRRM, but I do. I know for many people this is a mostly comedic ship not to be taken too seriously or the one they use to write $tav0s without having to fully disregard the women, but... Repressed sapphic who is head over heels for a religious extremist who wouldn't hesitate at burning her alive if her god demanded it...oh how relatable. + there is the entire topic of faith
Beric x Thoros
Tumblr media
I really love the themes of reborn faith at the sight of someone who is a living miracle. I know it's not a healthy thing in real life, but I love exploring the idea of someone finding a purpose and a cause in the world because of one (1) single person who reignites long-forsaken hope in another. Especially if that person dies later on. + a bit of borderline necrophilia meets Robin Hood. @/mylestoye described them once as:
"this is my lover I’ve pulled him from the arms of death six times & though every time he’s a bit more faded & a bit more lost I feel I can’t let him go, he is a symbol of my religion he reawakened my belief & faith, I will follow him & care for him for as long as I can"
Grenn x Pypar
Tumblr media
"If Pyp wanted to call me aurochs, though, he could. Or you, or Jon." - Sam II, ASOS
I know it's completely insignificant and GRRM didn't think anything while writing it, but I loved that division. Two sentences. Not one. He had to add it as an afterthought. I remember there was someone on AO3 who wrote exclusively for them in English and Spanish and I used to compare the translations trying to analyse the text. Need to revisit those. They just give me warm happy feelings

Just reread this fluffy little gem: "When One Door Closes..."
I would love a prequel outtake of how Arya and Gendry met or their last conversation before this story.
Or I would love Cersei meeting Robb or Cersei and Myrcella talking about Robb.
Or Sansa meets Myrcella. Or Catelyn meets Myrcella.
Really, I just want more of this fluffy little paradise you've created.
Oh haha thank you! I will admit that universe is not one I have any intention of returning to, it's not a story I'm particularly proud of not because of anything controversial or anything like that, but just because I think it's sort of flimsy and a little boring. That's not to say I don't appreciate you wanting more from the universe, that's always lovely, it's just not one that I'm compelled to return to.
I also feel like I should say outright based on this and the response I got from a number of readers on my recent Robbcella with jonsa matchmakers fic: While I support the Arya/Gendry ship and applaud those who write it, they are not ever going to be a pairing that I would center a story - even a one shot - around. This is in NO way a disparagement of the ship or of the characters, it is just not a pairing that I want to focus on when writing.
Thank you so so SO much for your continued support of my writing, I'm so glad that you enjoy my fics and are eager for more.

Hi, Could you do a sequel to your Robb x Rhaenys ficlet in which Jon and Aegon play matchmaker please? Thanks !!!
Another anon asked: Hi will you write a follow-up to your Jon being matchmaker for Robb and Rhaenys pls?
Verse
“I can’t tell. Can you tell?”
Jon looks over at his half-brother in exasperation. “No, Egg, I can’t. I don’t have super-hearing, you know.”
“But, I mean, they’re conversing at least,” says Aegon, crunching through his hundredth curly fry. “That’s a good sign, right?”
“Do we have to analyze it?” Jon whines. “This is still really weird.”
Aegon brandishes a fry at him. “Look, I know you and Rhae are different people, but can’t you trust me on this? You said yourself you’ve been trying to get Robb back in the game for months.”
It’s true, he had. Not that Jon’s exactly an expert in the dating department, what with his subpar track record, but he likes to think he’s a good morale booster. Besides, he had agreed to this, however reluctantly. Cowing to his half-brother’s beseeching stare, he turns his attention down to the lanes, where he notices Robb and Rhaenys have struck up a duel of their own in the lane next to the one Jon had abandoned. The text on the screen is too hard for him to read from here, but going by Rhaenys’s obvious glee, he guesses she’s getting the better of Robb.
For a full ten minutes the pair had just stood there not talking, and then they’d clearly mutually decided to ignore the elephant in the room instead of waiting in awkward silence for Jon and Aegon to return. Perhaps Rhaenys had realized it isn’t Robb she holds a grudge for, and Robb…
Well, Rhaenys can be a nasty piece of work, but he can’t deny that she’s pretty, and if Aegon’s word is true, she can be charming and flirtatious–though both are unfathomable to Jon–when she chooses to be. And, okay, maybe it’s nice to see Robb engaging with a girl again, even if it’s this particular girl. Between the good-natured ribbing, the uninterrupted game, and the furtive glances he can see even from his poor vantage point, there’s no mistaking it: Aegon’s intuition is better than Jon gave it credit for.
Unfortunately.
“How long are we supposed to sit here exactly?” Jon asks. “I feel like a stalker.”
Aegon nudges the plate of curly fries towards him. “Settle in.”
Three games, as it turns out. Robb narrowly wins the second but Rhaenys trounces him in the third, seemingly getting better with every cup of beer. Finally, Aegon makes the executive decision to stop the bleeding before the equally competitive combatants decide to stay until closing, trading wins and losses the entire night.
As soon as they join them, it’s like a bubble bursts, and tension once more drenches them all. That is, until they reach the parking lot. While he’s digging in his jacket pockets for the keys, out of the corner of his eye he sees Rhaenys hand a slip of paper to Robb.
“Here,” she says, “should you choose to get your ass beat again.”
He’d give just about anything for that paper to not have Rhaenys’s number written on it, but based on the stupid expression on Robb’s face, there’s little doubt. Worse still, his hope that he can simply ignore what he’d glimpsed gets dashed in short order. That night, Robb comes to the door of his bedroom and leans against the frame, hands shoved in his pockets.
“Something wrong?” Jon asks.
Robb nervously rubs the back of his neck. “Listen…I know the cardinal rule of the Bro Code, and I know you and Rhaenys pretty much hate each other, but…”
He can’t seem to find the courage to finish his sentence, so Jon finishes it for him. “You like her.”
“Yeah,” says Robb sheepishly. “But you’re like a brother to me, so just say the word and I’ll stay away. I won’t mention any of this again, Scout’s honor.”
Every ounce of Jon wants to vehemently tell him that it would, in fact, make him extremely uncomfortable, that he absolutely does not want them dating. Yet at the same time…who is he to impede Robb’s potential for happiness? Or Rhaenys’s, for that matter? Or, who’s to say it would even work out? Who’s to say it would go past a single date? Maybe they’d figure out that whatever attraction there’d been tonight was a one-time thing.
“No,” Jon sighs. “I won’t get in your way. Just…don’t share the details, all right?”
“Deal.”
Robb gives him a winning grin as he bounds out of the room, and it isn’t until hours later that Jon realizes that’s the first time he’s seen that smile in months.

assuming we had an AU where ned stark had "southron ambitions" for his children, what would he have had in mind? where would he have fostered them or who would he have wanted to marry them off to? how do you think the stark kids would have felt about something like that? would it have been as harmful for them as it was for, say, lysa tully and lyanna stark?
Contrary to popular sentiment that views ambition as an inherently negative character trait, it is not bad or harmful in and of itself. It’s only when people prioritize it above all else that it becomes bad; when they start stepping on others or putting them into dangerous or unwanted situation or denying them even their governance over their own bodies that it becomes harmful. To this effect, Rickard Stark’s problem wasn’t that he had ambitions for his children or that he looked to the south for alliance, it was that he forced Lyanna into a betrothal that she did not want and a marriage that would have made her miserable (and probably abused). Hoster Tully’s problem was not that he wanted a high marriage for his daughter, it was that he believed that the advancement of his House and his reputation was worth violating her body autonomy and putting her through the physical and emotional trauma of a forced abortion.
In that vein, Ned’s character is a very important factor in this conversation. This AU changes his trauma responses which is what drives a lot of his decisions in OTL; Ned’s desire to be left in peace in the North and his ill feelings towards the south was born out of his trauma during the rebellion, so was his inclination to keep his family around him and refusing to foster out any of his children after he lost his father and siblings in short order so I gotta say it’s a little hard to imagine a Ned who has “southron ambitions” since it was those ambitions that ended with almost all of his family dying on him before he was even 20. Why do I care about this when I could just rattle some options for fostering and marriage alliances? Because Ned’s overall personality is an integral part of his decision-making process when it comes to his politics. For example, would he be more open to a position in King’s Landing in this scenario? Would he have an eye on Robert’s children as potential matches for his children? Note that an ambitious individual with Ned’s circumstances could have capitalized on his connections to the new ruling regime post-Robert’s Rebellion, and gotten honors and high offices lavished on him by his eager royal foster brother, which would have landed him in King’s Landing with a seat on the small council and great sway in Robert’s government. But Ned didn’t because of a mix of a psychological wish to leave the south after what happened to his family, and a necessity for keeping his distance from Robert because of Jon. An ambitious individual would have actively pursued a match between Sansa and the dynastically excellent Joffrey, but Ned was wary and grudgingly accepting at first, then went to the extent of talking about breaking the betrothal before he guessed the truth about Joffrey’s parentage. Ned was not your average feudal lord who saw his children as marital pawns and instruments of alliances first, and whose focus in a betrothal was the amount of power it could bring him above the well-being of his children.
That is all to say that it’s a bit more complicated than just figuring out where Ned would foster his children and who he’d marry them to, because I have to find a balance between what southron ambitions means to Ned and the changes this bring as he perhaps seeks to be more involved in politics to the south, and the fact that this was a man who defied the social norms of his time by caring about the character of the people marrying his daughters and not wanting his children to be betrothed young. Ned was a man who cared more about his children’s well-being than he did any political gain. Those are elements that I can’t see going anywhere, otherwise Ned would lose the core of who he is as a person and wouldn’t be Ned at all.
Following that, I don’t think there is a strong possibility for Ned to foster out his children, even if he has political interests dependent on that fostering. For one, while fostering is a very useful method of building alliances, Ned could easily follow in the footsteps of his father-in-law and rely on marital alliances instead. Indeed, I think the chances of this are high, both because of Ned’s desire to keep his children around him in Winterfell and because of Jon Snow. That Jon gets to grow up in Winterfell under Ned’s tutelage and with his children is important to Ned, but it’s not something he could swing if he is to attempt to foster away his children with Catelyn. Keep in mind that Catelyn consistently tried to get Jon sent away so if Ned was to foster out any of her children, she wouldn’t have budged in demanding that Jon be sent away as well. After all, Ned couldn’t very well demand that Jon stay but send Catelyn’s children away. It’d be a major point of criticism and wonder if the Lord of Winterfell scatters his trueborn children but keeps his bastard son by his side, which would have serious political implications if Ned is seen to favor his bastard son over his trueborn one (and the Blackfyre rebellions were on Catelyn’s mind as it was.) So fostering is out unless Ned is prepared to send Jon away.
As for the matter of the betrothals, an eye towards the advancement of his House and Ned’s own personal priorities aren’t the only considerations here; he also needs to take into account the reaction of his bannermen when deciding on matches for his children. With the memory of the disastrous results of Lord Rickard’s own southron ambitions still in living memory, and given the fact that the Northern lords have been deprived of a Stark match from the previous generation, in addition to their natural dislike of the south, it is politically prudent for Ned to marry more than one child to the North to appease his bannermen and avoid unwanted discord in the North. Robb, in particular, is a lock-down for a Northern match, because (1) he is the heir and thus the greatest marital prize the Starks have to offer and so (2) his marriage to the North would go a long way in satisfying the Northmen more than any of his siblings, and (3) with a southron mother whom he favored in looks, marrying Robb to the south risks him being branded as “too-southron” in the eyes of his prickly future bannermen, a rather unfavorable image for the future Lord of Winterfell to have, especially in the presence of the Stark-looking, uber-Northern Jon Snow, or so Catelyn might figure. Of the possible matches, I’d say Wylla Manderly is the most likely choice. The Manderlys are the richest and most powerful Stark vassals which makes them the most impressive match within the North, which would fit Ned’s ambitions nicely in this scenario without being a too controversial match. The Manderlys may be Reacher expatriates, but they have been in the North for over a thousand years and have provided brides for House Stark twice before. The other potential brides within Robb’s age range are Meera Reed and Alys Karstark. The former might appeal personally to Ned considering his friendship with Howland, but an alliance with Greywater Watch offers little in terms of political power and I don’t know about Catelyn’s reaction since crannogmen aren’t exactly esteemed in the Seven Kingdoms or even in the North itself, though Ned’s personal regard for Howland would hold weight for her. Alys makes for a more traditional marriage partner for a Stark since Karstarks have been Stark brides thrice before, and we know that her father had an eye on this match since she and Robb were children. She also offers a seamless affirmation of Robb’s Northern roots due to her Stark blood.
As much as Robb is more likely to marry to the North, Sansa is almost certainly getting married to the south in this au. Unfortunately, Joffrey Baratheon is the most impressive dynastic match in Westeros so he is still the most likely choice. But here’s where possible changes might prevent that betrothal: if Ned is more involved in southern politics in this au in a way that brings him to King’s Landing if even occasionally, chances are he’d have some contact with Joffrey and be even more wary of a match with the crown prince than he was in OTL. Ned cared about the character of his daughters’ bridegrooms so if he has a better grasp on Joffrey’s personality before Robert suggests the match and he feels he has to accept it, he might try to broker another betrothal, though the chances of that are quite low since Robert suggests the match with Joffrey when Sansa was only eleven and Ned would not betroth her before that. Poor dear most likely still gets stuck with Joffrey. Who else would be suitable for Sansa? Hmm, one of her uncle’s future bannermen might be a good choice, if not especially advantageous since House Stark is already married to the Riverlands’ ruling family. But someone like Patrick Mallister remains a nice option. Fandom is quite fond of Willas Tyrell as a match for Sansa but while Willas is an impressive dynastic match, he is significantly older in a way that I don’t think Ned would want, not to mention that Ned didn’t have much (or any) relationship with Mace Tyrell. The heirs of the most prominent Vale families also fall under the too old umbrella. (And no, a match to Harry Hardyng can’t happen since it’d be a statement from Ned and Catelyn that they do not expect Robert Arryn to survive which is a poor message to send in normal circumstances but even more so in light of the familial connection between the Starks and Arryns. As for Robert Arryn, he is a bit on the younger side for Sansa.)
Arya, I can see go either way. A good dynastic match for her would be Robert Arryn. He is only a couple of years younger than her, and her cousin besides. If she is betrothed to Robert and Sansa to Joffrey, that would be quite the neat affirmation of the Tully-Stark-Baratheon-Arryn alliance. Downside is that if Ned witnesses Lysa’s deterioration and her encouragement of Robert’s dependency on her, which would be quite disturbing for him, he might not be too keen on the match. Robert is also very ill, which would raise concerns about his survival, or even his ability to father children in light of his parents’ fertility problems. But I can also see Ned marrying Arya to the North. She’d certainly prefer a match closer to her family rather than being sent south. Giving a Stark bride to a Northern house would also be a good idea since it’s been generations since a Stark bride was last married to the North (we have to go back to the generation of Lord Beron Stark, Rickard’s great grandfather to find a Stark bride who married to the North, though we do not know the marital fates of Beron’s daughters Alysanne and Berena. Still, even if we assume they married Northmen (probable), that still leaves a three-generation gap in which the only two available main-line Stark brides were married to a Royce and betrothed to a Baratheon respectively - and the two known non-main-line Stark ladies married a Stark (Ned’s mother Lyarra) and a Rogers from the Stormlands (his aunt Branda)). The two heirs within Arya’s age range are Cley Cerwyn and Jojen Reed, not as impressive of a dynastic match as an Arryn or even some of the other more powerful Northern Houses, but Cley has the advantage of proximity to Winterfell (only half a day’s ride away making them frequent visitors of Winterfell) which would certainly appeal to Arya, while Jojen has Howland’s friendship with Ned going for him, though sending her daughter to the swamps of the Neck would not go well with Catelyn, I reckon. Another choice that might be a middle ground between what Arya might prefer and what Catelyn and Ned want for their daughter is Brynden Blackwood, a match that wouldn’t be disliked by the Northern lords due to House Blackwood’s Northern origins and that might appeal to Arya for the shared cultural and religious origins.
Bran is another I see Ned and Cat planning on a southern match for given his desire to be a knight and fascination by chivalry and stories about knighthood. Known noble ladies in Bran’s age bracket are limited though so this is a bit hard. Myrcella Baratheon obviously, but a Northern second son isn’t an impressive match for a princess and Cersei is sure to object (and it definitely would not happen if Sansa\Joffrey is a go). Shireen Baratheon is a possibility as the heiress to Dragonstone, the daughter of the Master of Ships who Ned respects and the king’s niece, except Stannis resents Ned, Dragonstone isn’t the most bountiful seat (if still a definite improvement on the Northern holdfast Bran was promised), the relationship between Stannis and Robert is fraught, and why go for an alliance with Stannis if one is assured with Robert? Bethany Blackwood is another possibility that fits Bran’s shift towards the old gods, and would be received favorably by the Northmen as a Stark match. Jonos Bracken has daughters but 1) I hate that guy, 2) we don’t know how old his daughters are and 3) in a choice between Bracken and Blackwood, you bet everything that Ned would go for the old gods-worshipping, Northern-blooded Blackwoods who he counts as kin.
As for Rickon, who the hell knows. Lyanna Mormont is a fan favorite, but no matter how much I love the Mormont ladies, they are not good dynastic matches. House Mormont is impoverished and no one knows the identity of the father(s) of Maege’s girls, fathered by a bear as she claims. The kid’s age also means that possible brides for him probably hadn’t even been born yet when Ned was killed, and the only person within his age range that we know of is Erena Glover. So really, we all say Erena Glover because we don’t have any other choice in the North, much less the south. But to discuss Erena as match, it’s important to note House Glover is a masterly House, not a lordly one so not a lot of political advantage there. However, Rickon is the youngest of five so that allows for more leeway in picking his match than his older siblings, and it would not be the first time a Stark took a Glover to wife. On the upside, the Glovers have shown consistent unflinching loyalty to House Stark across multiple generations, and there is also a rebellion-forged personal connection between the two houses with Ethan Glover being the sole survivor of Brandon’s entourage and one of Ned’s companions that died trying to rescue Lyanna at the Tower of Joy.

Any chance we can start a thread of favorite fanfiction recommendations? I don’t care about fandom or ship, I just want to read what y’all really enjoy 🤩💕
[I’ll start with one from some fandoms I post about to be inclusive, but you can add as many or few as you like!]
Harry Potter: Divination for Skeptics by olivieblake
Come for the Dramione, stay for literally every other great ship in this fic omg. This fic made me love Harry/Theo and Pansy/Percy and Ron/Padma... like. It’s so good, it’s so funny, and it’s exactly the type of chaos that would ensue from a matchmaking percentage spell done by Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Game of Thrones: Robb Returns by The Dark Scribbler
Ahhhh this is the best fix-it fic I’ve ever read! It’s a huge WIP at 640k+ words currently, and it is so amazingly in character despite showing multiple POVs. Robb Stark is sent back from his death at the Red Wedding to a few months before Jon Arryn’s death. It’s amazing.
Star Wars: Espirit de Corps by meridianpony
A Finn centric fic!!! Ahhh I love this fic and the entire theme. Finn has a (Force?) connection and can see and speak to the spirits of the clones. All of them... except one who’s never shown up. Also there’s good Fox content. Just... really cool.
Avatar the Last Airbender: I’m still here by owedbetter
Look. I’m a slut for Zutara, and this fic is absolute perfection. Just... absolutely amazing characterization. I love that it starts after the Southern Raiders (my favorite episode bc we see how far Katara has really come), I love that we get to see the whole Gaang really acting their age. Like... Aang is only 13. Sokka and Suki are the eldest and most balanced and really step as good advisors. Toph keeps them grounded. Katara and Zuko balance in a push and pull as the emotional core. Idk it’s just fabulous.
Reblog with some of your favorite fics and pass it on! 👀 friendos don’t let me down! @catsnkooks @royalhandmaidens @ahhrenata @amukmuk @wildhoneyprose @nelba @majorshiraharu @cherry-cokes-world and anyone else who comes across this post!

WIP Wishlist Round Six
Themes in this list: Jaime/Brienne and my masochism when it comes to old WIPs. I blame the J/B fandom as always. Why did you punish me like this?
Round one, two, three, four, five
The Queen's Godswood by the1before (13,028 words, last update 05 June 2018) Summary: "Hell is full of good meanings, but heaven is full of good works." - Unknown. Brienne holds the difficult position in navigating between the two...especially with Jaime Lannister next to her.
Things I love: Queen Brienne (first as Robert's wife and then as queen by her own right), Brienne the (at least somewhat) secret Targaryen, her love for and care of the Godswood at the Red Keep, the love and anger and desire that simmers between her and Jaime, and that cliffhanger in the last chapter. I want more of this but I also want to read so many different people's takes on that setup, the cliffhanger is that good.
The Adventures of Brienne & Myrcy by the1before (6,978 words, last updated 14 Aug 2018) Summary: No summary.
Things I love: Brienne turns into a dragon. Literally. Into a dragon. I need no other reason to love this, but she also has a delightful protective friendship with Myrcella. (There is a short, complete sequel to this in as much as it is the season seven Dragon Pit scene turned on end because Brienne was sworn to Myrcella for so long, stayed with the Lannisters after, and TURNS INTO A DRAGON. Did I mention that part? Zaldrīzes buzdari iksos daor. Summary: A dragon is not a slave.) I also want to read different takes on Brienne literally turning into a dragon. (Possibly she is a dragon that turns into a human, but either way. Brienne becomes a literal dragon.)
Heart That Matters More by dancinginthecenteroftheworld (306,320, last updated 27 Aug 2021) Summary: What if Westeros were an adorably twee small town where nobody died and all problems were resolved in a happy way? If you read my November prompts and Advent fic, this is that universe. Will included re-written/expanded prompts in chronological order plus new content.
Featuring vets Asha and Brienne, Sansa the matchmaker, dumbass Robb Stark, Rickon and Shireen's amazing chemistry, Dany the crazy lizard lady AND MORE. If you want realism and complexity, don't come here. If you want to pretend we're not all living through a dumpster fire of a timeline and see characters you love be happy with mild angst that gets resolved so everyone's happy again, read on.
Things I love: That this updates so frequently, which is a little bit cheating to include it on this list. Brienne slowly building friendships. Rickon and Shireen's actual amazing chemistry. Ridiculous festivals, lots of gossip, and warm and loving friends and families.
To Reach for Spring by Kadi219 (173,394 words, last updated 01 Jan 2020) Summary: Picks up near the end of 8x04 and then becomes decidedly AU. The army of the north heads for King's Landing to save the realm, rather than burn it.
Things I love: The writing style, the pacing and word choice, the dialogue, the characterisations of pretty much everyone, Brienne the secret Targaryen (I love that premise every single time I see it), a strong answer to why Selwyn Tarth never leaves his damn island, better battle plans and politics than we saw in S8 in particular and throughout most of the show, really, Brienne, Sansa, Arya, and Danaerys coming together to change the world, women supporting women, and the plain fun of it. Kadi219 has engaging writing and storytelling styles.
it's not much (but my money's on you) by jellyb34n @nossbean (47,399 words, last updated 09 Sep 2021, 9 chapters posted out of 18) Summary: Brienne knocked again. Then she leaned on the bell.
Inside, faintly and getting louder, “For the love of the fucking Seven.” Lannister threw the door open. He blinked, tipped his head up to meet Brienne’s eyes. He was in loose plaid pyjama bottoms, and was still tugging down a white t-shirt. His hair was mussed, his stubble a golden shadow against his tan skin, and he blinked again at her blearily under his frown. He somehow still looked good, damn him, and it only served to make her feel even more irritable.
“Mr Lannister,” she said crisply, and she waited not a beat before shoving past him, right into his home uninvited. She hadn’t ever been so pushy, with a representative or otherwise, and it made her feel twitchy on top of everything else. But from their brief meeting, she suspected pushy was the only thing Lannister might respond to, so she’d steeled herself for it. She said over her shoulder, “We have four hours to prepare you.”
“Ms — Tarth, is it?” Lannister said, snide, behind her. “Please. Do come in. Make yourself at home. In my home. It isn’t like I was sleeping. It’s just half fucking five in the morning. On a Saturday.”
Things I love: Behind the scenes for politics, the friendships, particularly Jaime, Elia, and Rhaenys, Brienne's characterisation and voice, Jaime's sharp humour and intelligence set against his soft heart (he is made for love), the incredible sexual and romantic tension between Jaime and Brienne, Lyanna Mormont in all her glory, Missandei's intelligence and wit and competence, Pia's role -- everything, pretty much everything.

i think a lot of fandom people have emma from emma janeausten disease except not at all but its the only way i can describe it where people write characters to be a matchmakers whose only purpose is to set their friends/siblings up. which i disagree with and also dont think is realistic. so my hot take for the stark family is robb trying to discuss his relationship dramas and everyone except maybe sansa being like robb we do not want to hear we do not care we dont want to know about whatever bullshit theon is pulling. if anyone even discusses arya’s love life she would stop talking to them for at least a week, just totally cut out of her life. also i think jon would never bring anyone home to the family but he would constantly angst about it. sansa does actually have emma from emma janeausten disease though.

Update
Tumblr media
Happy WIP Wednesday!
Save the Date is now officially finished! You can read the final chapter here if you missed it. I thought I'd take the time to update you all on what I'm currently working on.
Brace yourself because it's a long list.
In the Drafting Stage:
Rolling Stone Issue 513, a Hellcheer two-shot. Chrissy reads something interesting in the issue of Rolling Stone her roommate brings home the day before they attend a big concert.
In the Planning Stage:
Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match- the much-awaited sequel to Arya Stark & the Green-Eyed Monster and the third installment of Draco Dormiens . . . . Robb, heartbroken after his recent break-up with Jeyne, throws himself into his matchmaking efforts with more vigor when his matchmaking partner Daenerys reveals that their efforts to set up his sister Arya with Gendry have ended in catastrophic failure. Meanwhile, rumors fly around the school regarding their relationship, and Sansa helps Jon study for his NEWTS. This story will be from Robb's POV and will be Robb/Daenerys, which I don't usually ship, but I think it works well in this universe.
Untitled Save the Date spin-off, featuring the CSI Techs John and Hero, who must figure out how to work together despite their pasts when Hero starts in John's department.
Petticoats & Roses, the 27 Chapter Robin/Raven Regency-ish AU that I swear I will finish someday
I Dreamt of You, a Cahir/Ciri one-shot.
A Figment of an Idea:
Hey There Demons, It's Me, Ya Girl, A Nace Buzzfeed Unsolved AU
The Ballad of Mad Sweeney, an American Gods post-canon AU. Madwife.
That's just a fragment of the ideas jostling around in my brain. I'm pretty sure Rolling Stone Issue 513 will be the first to be published as I have started drafting it, but you never know. Be sure to watch this page for updates. Feel free to ask me any questions about these fics; I love getting asks, and my inbox is always open.
Next week we will return to your regularly scheduled programming with a snippet from Rolling Stone Issue 513!

Do you think Lyn Corbray going to do something against LF and Alayne? I don't trust that man and even alayne was thinking after slightly mocking him that may be she shouldn't do it.
I don't know! I am completely undecided about both him and Anya Waynwood.
Lyn Corbray is a creepy, violent, poor second son, who supposdly relies on Littlefinger for "gold and boys and promises". But he seems to be genuinely angry that LF's matchmaking provided his brother with an impending newborn heir, robbing him of any future inheritance. That seems unusually sloppy of LF.
That plump bag of gold (or is it a lordship now, too?) offered for Sansa might seem tempting if LF should be misguided in his trust. He strikes me as much more of a threat than Shadrich, who wants only gold enough to get by.
But since GRRM has gone to the trouble of practically pointing it out, and it is unlike Littlefinger to miss that kind of obvious thing, I suspect it will be subverted in some way.
Maybe those "promises" are really the secret trump card keeping him in line. Maybe they are related to the fact that Catelyn's suggestions for Robb's designated heir focused on distant relations in the Vale: Waynwood, Templeton and Corbray. We know he is ambitious and wanted to marry Lysa.
Sansa Stark is a threat to such a potential promise of Northern inheritance unless Corbray downright marries her himself, in defiance of the Iron Throne. If LF told him about her true identity, Corbray has much to win and is biding his time. That would spell doom for Harry.
Heck, the idea could be to have Harry march North and die once the North is won, only for Corbray to step in as a distant "heir". This leaves Sweetrobin and the Vale for Littlefinger. Or so LF may have told Lyn, anyway.
That actually gives Sansa's teasing joke about a match for him a doubly sinister twist.
Anyway, that is one potential angle, but I really have no concrete ideas.
