Like one where Tybalt pulls out a gun on Mercutio and gets his ass kicked by Lord/Fulgenio Capulet

I made a modern adaptation of some R&J scenes (2.4 and 3.1) for a film project, and just had to share some of my favorite moments, in no particular order

“Queen Mab get to you again?”

- Benvolio, to Mercutio

The film was called Queen Mab, and it’s centered around Mercutio, with an emphasis on his dreams and hints to a time loop situation?

There was SO MUCH DOMESTIC BENCUTIO YOU HAVE NO IDEa

Like, Ben wakes Mercutio up and calls him sUnShiNe before handing him water

Also, he calls Mercutio “Merc” a few times throughout the film

All of the characters names are shortened in the script purely because I didn’t want to type them every time (Tybalt=Ty, Benvolio=Ben, Mercutio=Merc, Romeo=Ro, and Juliet was just Juliet)

Ben is CONSTANTLY checking his phone for texts from Romeo like he’s so worried poor guy

Meanwhile Merc is tormenting him

“I can see it now:

Here lies Romeo. Died from being left on read.”

- Mercutio, about Romeo’s crush on Rosaline

Ben extends an arm to Merc as they leave, and he takes it before grabbing his dagger

When they go to find Romeo, Ben brings a notebook with him that disappears once the Merc and Tybalt fight starts

Ben is wearing a shirt that says “MERCUTIO IS MY HOMEBOY”

a necklace with a purple gem (👀)

a cute blue and green jacket

and a beanie that does not fit properly at all

Meanwhile Merc is wearing a purple MIT shirt

When Ben and Merc spot Romeo, they hide behind a tree like those classic cartoons where you can only see their upper half sticking out of the tree

Our Romeo & Juliet were in a production of Sound of Music together as Maria and Von Trapp respectively so when I told them to act in love in the distance, they just started doing the Laendler choreography

Ben shows Tybalt’s “challenge” for Romeo to Merc via his phone, which implies that Tybalt texted Benvolio and was like “hey man can you let your cousin know I wanna fight him?”

We needed a shot of our Tybalt appearing behind Ben & Merc, and Ty was insistent that he climb a nearby tree and jump out of it

That shot took 15+ takes before we even got to his part, so he spent the better part of half an hour sitting in a tree waiting for his queue.

He jumped down too early during one take and had to re-climb the tree

Merc boops Ben several times throughout the film, and we had a few very flirtatious takes that didn’t make the Final Cut because we kept breaking character

“Careful, Good Benvolio, your irrefutable temper is showing”

- Merc to Ben when he complains about Romeo’s terrible decision-making skills

He calls him “Benny boy”

During one take, he accidentally said “bunny boy” and I told him he could definitely do that purposely if he wanted

Tybalt had recently done a production of R&J, so he asked to add the “peace be with you” line into the script, which I 100% supported, we spent a while during the shoot just quoting R&J back and forth, and he noticed all of my references in the script

Romeo was instructed to enter the Tybalt scene after a specific line, so he hid around the corner and FULLY RAN into the scene yelling “GUYS GUYS YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT I—“

Romeo is taller than both Ben and Merc, and he almost tackles both during his entrance

Oh my gosh Romeo and Tybalt have some kind of bromance going on IRL which is so fun but it was so difficult to get the two of them to pay attention because they were just hanging out with each other

Romeo had a line that goes “woah, Tybalt, calm down” and instead he said “Yoooo, Tybalt, chill out man” which made all of us break

When Tybalt confronts Romeo, you can hear a bird in the background, that stops the second Ty pulls out his dagger, which was accidental but iconic

I choreographed a sword fight, but Merc and Ty mostly improvised, they had a lot of fun

Our Juliet filmed the whole scene by the way, along with most of the other scenes

Also, in the script she had one line, in which she was supposed to say something with the word Capulet, and she kept joking to everyone that she was already off book

I ended up cutting the line for convenience and plot purposes, sorry Jules 😭

“Capulet”

- Not Juliet, since the line got cut

Romeo & Juliet joked about going to marriage counseling after they were struggling to film one of the scenes (J on camera, R with the boom mic)

They traded jobs after J accidentally filmed R for the entire take

In between shots, Ty and Merc were stabbing mushrooms with their daggers, Romeo was throwing rocks at a spider, and Juliet and I were just like, watching all of it happen

We had fake blood for Merc to put on his hand, and it ended up staining his hand so he spent like 10 minutes washing it off afterwards

When Merc dies, Ben holds his hand and rests his face against Merc’s head (also, he fully dies in Ben’s lap)

Then we went back and filmed the first scene and lemme tell you Mercutio is iconic but he was so so so bad at waking up

He kept asking me “how am I supposed to wake up???? How does one wake up scared???” And I was like “I don’t know man!!!!!”

Some lines taken directly from the play include “Romeo, my cousin Romeo!” (2.1) “A challenge, on my life” (2.4) “Come sir, your passado” (3.1) and of course, “Peace be with you” (3.1)

Also, Merc still calls Ty a ratcatcher, and Ty calls out to Ben and Merc by saying gentlemen

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Took 4 hours of filming for a 4 minute long film, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I played Benvolio by the way. Probably should have mentioned that sooner.

Why Romeo + Juliet 1996 lowkey implied that gay people (Tybalt) exist

A unorganized essay by Roxx

I firmly believe there is no way Tybalt, Capulet's nephew and Juliet’s cousin, was heterosexual in any way, shape, or form. He is, at least to me, extremely queer coded, whether it was intentional or not. The way Tybalt interacts with the cast screams Internalized Homophobia, from his aggressive and somewhat jealous nature towards Romeo to the banter he and Mercutio shared during their fight, he is just a very queer character and the gays love a enemies to lovers story (I’m the gays)

We don’t see Tybalt interact with Juliet, but I personally would guess they are close, at least as close as cousins are, given they most likely lived a majority of their lives together. If you really look into Romeo’s attempt to calm Tybalt in the play (and most versions) it can read in a homoerotic nature

Tybalt:  “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford, No better term: Thou art a Villain”

Romeo: Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee Doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting. Villain am I none. Therefore farewell. I see thou knowest me not.” Quote; Act 3 scene 1, they basically just broke up

 and the 1996 version of the film doesn’t help this notion of Tybalt having a raging homo crush on Romeo (haha mean girls reference) either, given how close they are standing next to each other and Romeo’s expression, in that film he looks absolutely heartbroken that Tybalt would resort to such violent action and refuses to strike him. that angers Tybalt and he beats Romeo up, talk about romance am I right? (That was sarcasm, don’t beat your partners it’s fucked up),  and before this, Tybalt looked at Romeo in a way that made him look almost obsessed with him. 

Mercutio and Tybalt are obviously interconnected, they’re not opposites though instead they’re two sides of the same coin, They could even be read as a metaphor for how the hyper-masculinization of Queer men of colour, especially black and dark skinned Queer men, can be harmful and imply the stereotype that men of colour are violent and “uncivilized.” 

So Tybalt’s aggressive nature could be read a reflection of his own internalized homophobia and self hatred that has been pushed onto him by society and probably even his own family, While Mercutio’s aggression could be read as a form of self perseverance to keep himself out of harm's way. They both know that if they are openly queer, they are inherently in danger just by existing.

Tybalt, within this context, hates Romeo because he’s in love with him and he can’t fathom the idea of being in love with a man and a Montague no less.

Also he literally calls Romeo “My man”, I know in various contexts that could mean a platonic bond but c’mon, that's pretty damn gay.

So you might be asking, “Why do you think Romeo and Juliet would be better if Romeo and Tybalt were in love instead? And why not Mercutio and Tybalt?” Firstly, no one would’ve died; The entire reason R & J is R & J is because Tybalt was there, what truly sets off the chain reaction of some of the most memorable parts of R & J is Tybalt. If he wasn’t in the room when Romeo and Juliet were talking, R & J wouldn’t exist, and if he was Romeo’s romantic interest instead no one would be dead, Secondly, JULIET IS TOO YOUNG, I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL, and Third, Romeo and Tybalt would have a more interesting dynamic; the idea of Tybalt having to learn how to be vulnerable with a romantic partner is pretty interesting, I don’t think Tybalt could really ever learn to be vulnerable with Mercutio given both of their short tempers (and Mercutio is lowkey a dick but he’s still cool either way) and lack of respect for the others house. Romeo, obviously, is a bleeding heart romantic who is very very dramatic, while Tybalt is a ruthless, blood-thirsty, and closed off jackass who has some form of daddy and/or mommy issues, and that sort of opposites attract dynamic is the most interesting part of the entire idea of Romeo & Tybalt being an item.

Or, his promise to get you that new movie you oh-so desperately wanted to see? The Night’s Opened View, starring Angelo Manovincine and Catelynn Ashins, solving a murder in their high-school party? Drugs scurried around the place, sugar coated toxins covered the tongues of the most bitter booze imaginable, and hands covering cold faces, and cold cases alike. No, it was an offer you couldn’t refuse. Besides, you needed a release from your dreary, and unfortunately comfy, apartment room, so what’s the harm?

“(Y/N), come on!” His pace quickened and the intertwined grip between his smooth, well-kept hands, and your hands, “I saw some really cute shoes for you!” “Mer, trust me, I really don’t need MORE shoes!”

He paused, turned around to look at you up and down, furrowed one eyebrow, and shot you a look with an “mmhm” following. “Mer, my shoes aren’t that bad!” “….” “I JUST GOT THESE SHOES YESTERDAY.” “Creased and deceased?” “Oh, shut up.” A goofy grin followed his face, before running off into another store, yelling, “I’LL GET YOU SOME SHOES IN HERE!” “WAIT, MER-“ And he was gone like the wind..like always. 

“Why does he always do this?”, you asked yourself, out-loud, in fact. “I don’t see why he wouldn’t, seeing you talk to yourself would make anyone run off.” Oh, God. It’s him again. His slightly raspy voice, his sarcasm, his…eyes. Those Dark brown eyes. Those dark, slightly lidded, brown eyes. 

It was him, it was always him.

“I’d be thankful that a pretty face like yours goes a long way.” You see him look you up and down, and give his signature toothy grin. You sigh, “What do you want, Tybalt?” He smirked a little, and simply tilted his head, “Awww, don’t wanna see me?” He leaned in close to you, much to your feigned annoyance. “Not here, and especially not up close. Not to say I can’t see your whiskers from afar, though.” The corner of your lips turned into a smile, and you could hear the ticking of a bomb, slowly going off. Tick, tick, tick, tick. And you couldn’t wait until it exploded. 

“You just love that little cat metaphor, don’t you?” “What? It’s funny”, you lowered your voice, hoping Tybalt wouldn’t hear, “and cute.” “Cute? That’s what you wanna call this?” An idea popped in your head, and you brought him closer by a little tie on his somewhat formal black adorned attire, “Maybe it is, what’s it to you?” Your fingers slithered up his tie, as you slowly undid it, and he hummed in response, looking into your eyes. “To me, it’s unfair.” You stopped tying his tie, his words catching your attention. “Unfair how ?” “Unfair because we all know who has eyes that you can stare into for days.” He smirked more, seeing you continue to play with his tie. “And from the looks of it, I can, with how alone you are.” “Actually”, you pull him in closer, your mouth to his ear, “I’m with someone.” The venom poisoned his tone, as he looked away, feeling a tinge of jealousy course through his veins. “Oh..? And, who’s the one…?” Please be a friend, please be a friend, please be a friend-

“Mercutio.” 

Oh God, it’s even worse.

  Not only is their “friend”, but it’s that flirtatious bastard. Great. You bent back, and yanked on the tie a little, just before patting on it. And, he would’ve given you a reaction, had he not been consumed with the thought of him joking with you, smiling at you, all things he can do for you. “So that’s who left you today, right ?” You groan a little, and nodded, which gave him a little more satisfaction.

“You know, I can treat you better, doll.” “Oh, please, and just what are you gonna do? give me some flowers and wow me?” “C’mon dollface, give me some credit. You and me? We’re in sync.” “Oh, yeah? What am I thinking right now?” He paused, looking away from you, reaching behind his back, and pulling out two tickets. “If I were to guess, I’d say you’d want to see…..oh, I forgot what it’s called….’The Night’s Opened View’?” “Tease.” You thought, yet still visibly excited, and quite shocked. You hardly mentioned this movie, except to Mercutio a few hundred times, but to no one else ! So, how did he- “When we went to the store, I saw you looking at the poster for three hours. Almost like how you look at me. Almost.” Bet he wouldn’t do that for you. You paused, then felt hot. “So, it’s a yes, or do I have to convince you ?” “What are you gonna do, kitty?” “What I have to.” He brings your hands up to his lips, and gives them a peck, all while looking at you..it feels way hotter in here than before. “Of course, you won’t break my heart, right, doll ?” “..What if I did?” “…You wouldn't do that, doll.” He gets closer, his lips hovering over yours, hand on your chin, “You know you want me. You, and those pretty porcelain lips of yours.” “I want to make you explode." He chuckles, "I'll cherish you too, dollface."

You playfully scoffed, but deep down, you knew it was true. You knew that your heart was his. You knew that no matter how much you wanted to push him away, tease him, maybe even judge him, you always loved him. “Fine, I’ll go see it with you, but you’re paying for everything.” “Not a problem, you know I like spoiling you. All you gotta do is ask, doll.” He holds your hand, his thumb massaging your knuckles, “Oh, and don’t bring him along. I just want it to be us, alone.” “Him?”, you paused, “Who’s him- Wait- What’s wrong with Mercutio ?” “.....” “..Fine, I’ll come at 5.” He smiled, then immediately heard Mer’s laugh, and the corners of his lips went south. “We’ll talk later, yeah?” “Maaaaaaaybe.” He chuckled, “Don’t toy with me like that, doll.” and walked off. “(Y/N-N) !” Mercutio’s voice trilled in the air as he skipped towards you. “I found these shoes, and they’re SO cute ! Aaaaand, it’ll be perfect for our movie night tonight !” He hugged you, but you felt both hot and cold. Chilly and warm. Conflicted. “Oh, Mer, I’m gonna be busy tonight ! I need to see (B/F/N) for their ‘newest art invention’.” You applied air quotes, trying to hide the fact that you’re lying to Mer, and acting as if your “(B/F/N)” wasn’t the man you’ve been smitten for since God knows how long. “Oh….aw man….” He lowered his head, but you quickly cupped his face, “Come on, after I help (B/F/N), we’ll watch a whole marathon of movies ! You’re pick this time too !” He quickly smiled, and kissed the palm of your hand. “Alright, alright, I forgive you.” “Good, now,” you tap his shoulder, and run off, “LAST ONE TO LEAVE’S GONNA HAVE TO SHAVE PRINCE’S MUSTACHE TOMORROW NIGHT !” “HEY, I DID IT LAST TIME !” He quickly sprints after you, cackling, while Tybalt watches.

“...Come on, Doll, make a better choice than him.” His eyes shut, as the question that plagues him infects him yet again: “…What does he have that I don’t ?”

(A/N: Whew, it’s been a while since I’ve made a one-shot, and even longer of it being an x reader ! I do hope that I made Tybalt seem flirtatious in your eyes (and in-character too) ! I also hope that it isn’t too bad or incomprehensible, and that you all have a wonderful day/afternoon/evening/ night ! :D)

⁺ Tybalt very often carries heavy items for you, which often varies from; books, baskets of food, boxes, and much more.

⁺ Oddly enough, he's dazed when he thinks of you. Like, he's just in another universe just imagining being with you

⁺ It scares everyone a bit to see the Tybalt completely dazed. (Prince blesses whatever/whoever shut Tybalt up and kept peace on the streets of Verona.)

⁺ On with the topic of Tybalts' lack of ability to keep quiet, he rambles constantly. And I mean he loves to ramble about you, specifically.

⁺ He enjoys a lot of features about you, personality-wise or physically. He admires you a lot, considering you're a lot softer than he is.

⁺ Actually.. more about Tybalt's rough self, he has rough skin along with scars and very often enjoys you brushing over him with your much softer hands, even if your hands are also rough.

⁺ Since he knows the Prince extremely well, he could practically sneak out very often and take you away on little adventures.

⁺ The Prince is very fond of you and... well, like Nurse with Tybalt, knows a lot about you.

⁺ He's probably they type to pick up random things from the street stores and gift them to you.

⁺ Very, very often takes you out. (Ask the Prince to at least somewhat hold him back if you get tired.)

⁺ If you have siblings, he's teaching them to climb trees, how to do little things he picked up on.

⁺ Probably causes you a little heart attack when you see your 8 year old sibling on the highest branch.
