there was a tweet that pointed out how in roppongi hills there’s this prominent spider sculpture in front of mori tower, and that it could be the spider being portrayed in ran and rindou’s identical tattoos. I LOVE THE IDEA because wow that’s such a cool way of identifying where you’re from, but also, the sculpture is the work of louise bourgeois entitled maman, or ‘mother’ in french. 

maman was the artist’s ode to her mother:

Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.

i mean like, a creepy spider does seem like a kinda weird choice for honoring your mum, but it’s also actually so sweet and well-thought out when you learn the philosophy behind it, you know?? and if this was really partly a make your momma proud moment for ran and rindou i think that this would definitely be their thing, like their brand of sweet.

OJT EATS | Rigoletto Bar and Grill

There are a few restaurants in Tokyo that we have to go to when we are there; it doesn't feel like we have been to Tokyo if we don't hit up these spots. One of those places is Rigoletto Bar and Grill in Roppongi Hills. It may seem that a Spanish / Italian restaurant is an unusual choice for Tokyo but the food is just incredibly tasty, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere is stylish but also laid back.

We started with some fried chicken. This was a great start to the meal. I've always believed that Asia is exceptional at frying stuff and every time I'm there, it proves it again and again. These wings were super crisp and so juicy. They had a little bit of a kick to them which we really enjoyed.

This was the gizzard and eringi ajillo and came with this gorgeous bread bun. It was crusty and crisp on the outside but amazingly soft inside. The gizzards were surprisingly tender (as they can easily get very tough) and the eringi mushrooms were full of flavour. This was a great dish.

Something as simple as a brocolli and tomato dish was elevated with anchovies. It was still nice and fresh but with just that extra depth of flavour. Really nice.

Our favourite and the one dish we always have to order is the garlic mash. This is the garlic mash of our dreams; so creamy and so garlicky. It's a dish that's hard to share so we have in the past just ordered one per person. Do not leave this place without eating this.

This was the first of the pasta dishes we had. It was a white sauce with chunks of sausage and fried pieces of burdock. There was a smattering of parmesan grated on top which just pulled everything together. This was just a really tasty well done pasta, even if it wasn't too traditional!

This was the mushroom and salmon pasta with a soy butter sauce. Again, another less than traditional pasta dish but delicious nonetheless. The pasta was cooked perfectly and you just had chunks of incredibly flavourful salmon and mushroom nestled within. So good!

If the food wasn't enough to keep our attention (it was), we even had this view of the Tokyo Tower to enjoy. This was another great experience at one of our favourite restaurants and we look forward to going back next time we manage to make it to Tokyo!
